Gas prices are still above $3 a gallon, but not as far above this week.

"Reno County looks like $3.07 a gallon, that's three cents less than the state average today," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "We polled some Kansas drivers this month and of those who said they are not planning to travel this Thanksgiving, 26% said that gas prices did play a role in their decision not to travel."

Kansans still are paying less than much of the country.

"The national average is $3.41 a gallon," Steward said. "Kansas is still in good shape, 31 cents less than the national average. That puts us at 6th cheapest in the U.S."

The fundamentals are still hard to pin down, even as we get closer to holiday travel.

"Demand generally, this time of year, has started to decrease," Steward said. "But, in the most recent weekly report, we saw a slight increase in gas demand. You'd expect that quite a few people are going to be traveling for the holiday weekend coming up, so you would expect demand to be fairly strong again this week. That, coupled with the high crude oil prices that we continue to see, that's keeping prices elevated when we go to fill up at the pumps."

The least expensive state in the nation, Oklahoma, still has average gas prices above $3 a gallon at $3.02 as of Friday.

The Hutchinson Art Center has an event coming up this weekend.

"We have a Holiday Open House coming up tomorrow in the afternoon from noon to 5 p.m." said Jace Chambers with the center. "We'll have a bunch of different tables set up in our front area, our lobby, featuring local artists, great for gift-giving ideas and we'll also have some free snack grab bags."

They will also have holiday music playing to set the mood for the event.

"Up front, we're keeping it kind of small, we're only going to have seven artists," Chambers said. "It's a wide variety of mediums and crafts. There will be things like cards, paintings, jewelry, 3D pieces, all sorts of stuff."

The Hutchinson Art Center is at 405 North Washington in Hutchinson.

HAC to hold Holiday Open House Saturday

Kan. — Saturday is the 11th Annual Midwest Superstore and Eagle Radio "Stuff the Trucks" donation drive to benefit the Food Bank of Reno County.

Bring non-perishable food items or donations between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to the entrances at the Hutchinson Walmart at 1905 E 17th Ave.

The 2020 event collected 4,055 pounds of food at Wal-Mart for the Reno County Food Bank in Hutchinson.

"Stuff the Trucks" coming up Saturday

HAVEN, Kan. — The Haven USD 312 School District says that due to significant increases in positive COVID cases at Haven Grade School, the school is now in remote learning.&nbsp;

Students will not be in the building through November 17. Teachers are providing&nbsp; information related to remote learning starting today (Friday). Lunch is available and can be picked up at Haven Grade School. Lunches for&nbsp; Friday and Monday are being provided today (Friday) from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Lunches for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week can be picked up Tuesday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The district says they hope to have students back in classrooms Thursday, November 18. It's the second school in Reno County to go to remote learning, joining Buhler Grade School who has been on remote learning this past week.

Haven Grade School goes to remote learning

The annual events to honor veterans at the Moose Lodge in Hutchinson are Saturday.

"We've been at it over 15 years," said John Miller with the Moose Lodge. "We can't have it on the day, because if it's like on a Wednesday or Thursday people have to work the next day, or a lot of people work that day. It's not a holiday for a lot of businesses. We do it on the closest Saturday, whether it's before or after, so that the most people can come and become part of this organization and part of the ceremony."

It's a full day of activities at 1st and Lorraine in Hutchinson.

"The doors will open at 10 a.m.," Miller said. "We have a dinner, it starts at 11. It's a turkey dinner, just like a Thanksgiving dinner and it's free. It's donation only. Then at 1 p.m., we try to seat the poker players and then have a short honor ceremony before we start playing at 1:30 p.m. We're not allowed to call it a poker tournament, we have to call it a fundraiser."

It does raise funds for multiple veterans organizations.

"We give to the two VFW's, there's one in South Hutch and the Hutch VFW, the American Legion and AMVETS," Miller said. "This year, everything that's left after we donate to those goes to Honor Flight."

Suggested donation to play is $25. There will also be a dance that night featuring the Triple Play Band. It will have a $10 cover charge, $6 for Moose Members.

Moose Lodge vets events Saturday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The number of new COVID cases has jumped by 447 in the past 11 days. As of Friday morning, the number of positive cases stands at 11,023. The current active case count has also increased by 167 cases since the start of November to 347.

The numbers are not as high as 2020 when the active case count stood at 926 Nov. 12. The Reno County Health Department says they are hoping that vaccinations, especially for those over 65 and other efforts will keep the numbers lower for Thanksgiving when the 2020 numbers peaked at more than 1,500 active cases before decreasing to less than 600 at Christmas of last year.

The number of deaths related to COVID also increased by 3 to 172 in the county.

Vaccinations are now approved for emergency use for children. As of Friday, total vaccinations have crossed the 50% threshold.

The death rate for COVID-19 in Reno County is 172 of 10,676 or 1.6%.

Friday Update: Case count back above 300 this week, vaccinations now above 50%

BUHLER, Kan. — Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman says the district is staying the course when it comes to plans for reopening Buhler Grade School on Monday.

Students have been in remote learning this week after a sudden spike in COVID cases among students and staff.

Couchman says, as of right now, the number of positive cases is around 22 with some new cases and some going off the positive case list. Couchman says parents will be notified of the school's status as the weekend approaches. She says most of the students and staff should be off the 10-day quarantine list by Monday.&nbsp;

The other USD 313 school that saw a small uptick in cases, Union Valley Elementary School, has seen positive case numbers drop in the past week.&nbsp;

Buhler Grade School still plans to take students Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Dillons Food Stores has announced it will be on limited hours during the Thanksgiving holiday so employees can enjoy time with family, friends and loved ones.

The pharmacies and floral departments will be closed all day Thanksgiving. Pickup orders will stop after 2 p.m. and all stores will close at 3 p.m.

“We have always believed the holidays are our time to shine, thanks to the passion and dedication of our teams,” Sheila Regehr, Dillons spokesperson, said. “Our Dillons, Baker’s, and Gerbes associates give so much of their energy to serve nearly a million customers shopping for their holiday meals in the days leading up to Thanksgiving. Now, our associates can enjoy Thanksgiving supper making memories with their family, friends and loved ones.”

All locations will reopen on Friday at 7 a.m.

Dillons on limited hours Thanksgiving

The 1990s brought many things from the past back to life, including the Liberty Bell 7 and the reopening of one of Hutchinson's greatest treasures in the Fox Theatre. It also saw one of the first businesses in Hutchinson absorbed into the corporate world, a new organization to benefit boys and girls in Hutchinson and a new visitors center at Dillon Nature Center. The Blue Dragons won a national title and a blackbird doesn’t fly to Hutchinson, but crawls in on a semi. Those memories and more this Sunday with The Decades.

As we celebrate the 150th birthday of Hutchinson and Reno County, we want to go through the years, decade by decade, to see how things have changed and — remarkably — how they have stayed the same. The Decades: 1990s coming Sunday

Kan. — 
Republican candidate for Kansas State Treasurer and economist Michael Austin is pleased to see both parties supporting tax cuts on food, but the discussion shouldn't end there.

"I love seeing bipartisan efforts to lower taxes," Austin said. "Kansas has a history with tax cuts. Largely, it hasn't been positive. With its tendency to always raise the budget, I really think that this time around, we have to make sure that we lower taxes the right way. I think the only way to cut taxes is to find and cut wasteful spending."

Austin's hope is that state government looks deeper than today's bank balance in determining whether tax relief is sustainable.

"With this food sales tax cut, I think there's a current conversation that the state government can use its excess tax revenues as a partial pay for, for this food sales tax reduction," Austin said. "I'm here to say that I think that move is dangerous and I think it risks raising taxes in the future."

It's also important for policymakers not to use federal infrastructure dollars that are one-time use to make this happen.

"A fiscally responsible budget means before you make permanent changes to tax revenue, it has to be supported by permanent changes to spending," Austin said. "In the aftermath of the Great Recession, Kansas government did the exact opposite. Republican candidate for Kansas State Treasurer and economist Michael Austin is pleased to see both parties supporting tax cuts on food, but the discussion shouldn't end there."I love seeing bipartisan efforts to lower taxes," Austin said. "Kansas has a history with tax cuts. Largely, it hasn't been positive. With its tendency to always raise the budget, I really think that this time around, we have to make sure that we lower taxes the right way. I think the only way to cut taxes is to find and cut wasteful spending."Austin's hope is that state government looks deeper than today's bank balance in determining whether tax relief is sustainable."With this food sales tax cut, I think there's a current conversation that the state government can use its excess tax revenues as a partial pay for, for this food sales tax reduction," Austin said. "I'm here to say that I think that move is dangerous and I think it risks raising taxes in the future."It's also important for policymakers not to use federal infrastructure dollars that are one-time use to make this happen."A fiscally responsible budget means before you make permanent changes to tax revenue, it has to be supported by permanent changes to spending," Austin said. Austin: Food sales tax cut should be start of larger discussion

The Reno County Sheriff's Office made an arrest earlier this week on sex crime and kidnapping charges.

Thirty-year-old Mathew W. Morgan of rural Hutchinson was ultimately booked early Wednesday on charges of Aggravated Sodomy, Aggravated Domestic Battery and Aggravated Kidnapping. His bond has been set at $152,500.

According to a department release, the case started Monday evening just before 8:30 p.m. when deputies were sent to a rural residence northwest of Hutchinson for a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival at the residence Deputies spoke with a male who stated the caller to 911 had just left the residence. Upon initial interviews at the scene and further investigation, the specific facts in the report were unclear. 

Tuesday morning, detectives began to review information previously gathered about this case and set up further interviews. In this continued investigation, it is believed that several crimes were possibly committed causing the initial call. Ultimately, the male that was spoken to by deputies on the original call was placed under arrest. 

As in most cases of this nature, this case is still under investigation.

Chamber offering shopping incentives

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; Burlington Northern Santa Fe posted solid numbers in the third quarter as it overcame some of the challenges presented by congestion in ports and the pandemic.

The nation's second largest railroad posted total revenue of $5.7 billion, an increase of 12% over last year. Net income totaled $1.5 billion which was an increase of 14% year-over-year.

Carloads increased by 5% which included a 19% increase in coal shipments due to high natural gas prices. Ag shipments dropped by a percentage point as exports fell.

The railroad will be watching fuel prices as those expenses jumped by 79% to $705 million. Higher fuel prices could take a major bite out of the&nbsp; fourth quarter for BNSF later this fiscal year.

BNSF operates about 10 trains per day through Reno County including Amtrak's Southwest Chief. It has the second highest valuation in Reno County at $11.2 million.

BNSF reports strong third quarter

Dr. Jon Austin, DVM notes that it is important not to include your pet in the people food at holiday gatherings.

"With the holidays coming here, we're going to have lots of gatherings of people and wonderful treats and food to eat," Austin said. "It's always a situation where the pets can get involved either intentionally or accidentally and get into things that are too much for them."

Fatty food can be particularly dangerous.

"Things like gravy, turkey carcasses, things like that are going to be prevalent here soon with thanksgiving meals, they're going to be hard on animals who are not used to eating a lot of fat," Austin said. "That's the most common problem that we see in our pets shortly after the holidays or during the holidays is that they've gotten into either a plate that someone gave them, not knowing that it was dangerous, or the family was at the table and the big dog in the kitchen got up on the counter and got into the turkey carcass and got the grease and the drippings and all of that and just overloaded their system."

Eating too much fat can cause inflammation of the pancreas or infection in animals if it isn't caught quickly. If you happen to catch them in the act, you can help.

"If you're there within a close time from when it occurred, when they ate it, you can get them to vomit," Austin said. "We'll often have people use hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting in their pets and you just take a, depends on the size of the animal, typically for a bigger dog, they're going to require maybe eight to twelve ounces to make them vomit. You just have to get the peroxide into their stomach."

Obviously, you want to call your veterinarian if you are forced to use these measures, so they can monitor the dog in case it happens too late.

HARVEY COUNTY—A Kansas woman died in an accident just before 7a.m. Wednesday in Harvey County.

 The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Honda Pilot driven by Trella Marie Batten, 62, Whitewater, was westbound on Kansas 196 just east of Hillside Road passing two other vehicles.

The Honda struck an eastbound 2008 Hyundai Elantra driven by Sarah Elizabeth&nbsp;Colling, 39, Potwin, head-on.

After the crash, the Honda veered right and struck a westbound 2018 Freightliner semi driven by Joseph Leigh Maske, 43, Salina.&nbsp;

Debris from the head-on crash struck westbound 2016 Chevy driven by Gregg Edward Ewing, 47, Carterville, Missouri. The Hyundai veered right and rolled onto its top in the south ditch.

Colling was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp; Preferred Mortuary.&nbsp; EMS transported Batten to Wesley Medical Center. Maske and Ewing were not injured. The KHP had incomplete seat belt usage information.

Kansas woman dies in 4-vehicle, head-on crash

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Regional Medical Center announced Wednesday that Dr. Regina Johnson will join Hutchinson Regional Medical Center as the organization’s Chief Clinical Officer.

Johnson’s responsibilities will be split approximately 50-50 between serving as a primary care physician and in an administrative capacity working closely with the network of doctors within the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Johnson graduated from Buhler High School, then enrolled at Kansas State University where, in 2000, she graduated cum laude with a degree in Life Science with a minor in Biology. Soon after graduation, her next step took her to the University of Kansas School of Medicine, graduating in 2005.

Johnson served a three-month stint as a surgical clerkship in Zanzibar, Africa, and was employed at the Heart and Family Institute in Port St. Lucie, Florida, before returning to Kansas. Dr. Johnson currently serves as Chief Medical Officer for Hunter Health in Wichita and was Medical Director for Serenity Hospice of Hutchinson before that.

Johnson is a member of the American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine. She has written and spoken to audiences throughout the nation on multiple healthcare topics including HPV immunization programs and osteoporosis.

Dr. Johnson said she looks forward to joining Hutchinson Regional. “I am extremely excited to now be a part of Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and can’t wait to see what the years to come hold for this tremendous team,” Dr. Johnson said. “I truly believe that all people deserve quality healthcare and this commitment to the patient experience and excellence in quality care and personalized patient relationships is what drives me. Johnson joins HRMC

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hospice &amp; Homecare of Reno County dedicated the newly-decorated Hospice House foyer and flagpole in a ceremony Wednesday afternoon. The dedication included the raising of the new flagpole and flag, along with a short ceremony and an honor guard from the Reno County Sheriff’s Department.

“The goal is to honor veterans,” Stacy Goss, community liaison for Hospice, said. “Not only ones who enter the Hospice house or use their services, but just anybody in the community.”

Goss says Hospice and Homecare provides services to veterans through a special partnership.

“We participate with Central Kansas Veterans Community Partnership,” Goss said. “They provide support for homeless veterans.” That program provides bags filled with items to help homeless veterans along with other needs.

Goss says Hospice also helps through the We Honor Veterans program, a national program established to promote collaboration between the Department of Veterans Affairs and hospice organizations throughout the nation.&nbsp;

“That is a program that teaches our staff that we can recognize, understand and meet the needs of veterans and their families through their end-of-life journey.”

We Honor Veterans Hospice House opened in 2001 and for the past 20 years has provided care for numerous veterans.&nbsp;

Both have been Impact Award Winners of the Year in the district.

Two USD 312 staff nominated for state awards

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; The HutchCC Board of Trustees will hear the proposal to replace the scoreboard at Gowans Stadium when they meet Thursday. The ten-year-old scoreboard will be replaced by a larger one with a larger LED video board. The scoreboard is being paid for with private funds the board just needs to give the go-ahead to build the new display on college property.

Also Thursday, the board will take actions on two very slight revisions to the support animal policy at the college. The change reflects that any support animals must be kept in the students living quarters and not be allowed about the dorms. That’s different from a service animal which must be in the presence of its owner at all times such as seeing-eye dogs.

The board will also hear comments from the public and board members as well as go into an executive session for a non-elected personnel matter. Thursday’s meeting of the HutchCC Board of Trustees begins at 7 p.m. at the Shears Technology Center on the HutchCC campus.

HutchCC BOT to hear information on new scoreboard

Kan. — The Makerspace at the Hutchinson Public Library is a place where patrons can learn how to create, with tools they might not otherwise afford.

"It's a community space where we provide equipment and know how so that you can learn to make things a little bit better and learn new skills," said Daryl Goad with the library. "We have a bunch of equipment that you probably don't have at home. We have 3D printers, we have a CNC mill that you can make signs with or mill wood. We've got a high end embroidery machine and we have people who come in and teach us new things all the time. It's really a community center both for learning and teaching."

If you can imagine something, the Makerspace at the library can help you make it for someone for Christmas, or show you what else can be made better.

"The 3D printers are excellent for that," said Nathan Towle with the library. "We always have an uptick in activity during the holidays. People coming in making presents for family and friends, for different events, whether it's something small, like a very specialty bookmark, or ornaments, or there's just an incredible variety of things that people can use these machines for."

The Makerspace is also looking for additional staff, but because of that need, they are open now just Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

RENO COUNTY—First responders are on the scene of a semi rollover accident between 11th and 17th on K-61 in the southbound lane.

&nbsp;The southbound lane of K61 is completely blocked and will be for some time, according to the Hutchinson Fire Department.

Kan. — Kansas Republican State Rep. Paul Waggoner believes there is considerable support for a special legislative session to address specific issues related to vaccine mandates.

"There's two bills that I specifically know about," Waggoner said Wednesday. "There can be additional bills, but there's going to be one that will make sure that religious exemptions are honored and that they're not thwarted by what some of the, either big companies, or even some of our public institutions have been doing. That's been requiring people to fill out like a three or five page, you know, theology thesis on why they want a religious exemption, which is just total overkill. The other thing is, it is true in Kansas law that, if you refuse an order of your employer, it's basically like you're...it's a voluntary suspension, it's like you're quitting on your own accord, which of course is not the case, they're being forced out. If you're quitting on your own accord, you do not get unemployment compensation."

Normally, bringing the legislature into special session is not something they do themselves.

"To have the House and Senate members call for a special session has literally never happened in Kansas history," Waggoner said. "This is kind of a one-off event. Typically the governor is the one who is doing this, but, of course, Governor Kelly is not really of the same persuasion, I think, as the rest of the legislature is on this topic."

Kelly has made a public statement saying that it is 'too late to impose a federal standard' regarding vaccines. Waggoner said there is already a timeline out there for the legislature's return.

"It would be that Monday right before Thanksgiving," Waggoner said. "Typically, this would be about a two-day session, I think, is what they are expecting. We should be able to get some things out of committee officially and debated and voted on relatively quickly."

Waggoner said in his opinion they can fairly easily get to a majority of the House that is in favor of coming to Topeka, but, unless the Governor acts, they would need two-thirds majorities of both houses to agree just to be allowed to show up.

Waggoner sees support building for special session before Thanksgiving

Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 Executive Director of Human Resources Dr. Dawn Johnson told Hutch Post Tuesday that the final touches are being put on the agreement between the district and its teachers and it was her intent to get them a final draft this week.

Also in the agreement, it includes a $750 one time premium pay to teachers this year.

USD 308 had additional dollars in its budget for this year due to an increase in its weighted enrollment as of the official count date in September.

Johnson: Official deal should be done for USD 308 teachers and board this month

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — She was accused of a crime she did not commit and went through jail time and a trial that lasted for years. Now Amanda Knox is an advocate for those who are wrongly accused. Knox was the last speaker for the Dillon Lecture Series for 2021. Knox says she was practically convicted before the case could go through the legal system.

"I was arrested five days after the crime was discovered, before really any evidence was really available," Knox said. "I think what’s really telling about that is that the prosecution and the detectives sort of decided upon a theory before they actually had any evidence. And that is how this whole case unfolded."

Knox now spends her time supporting those who have been wrongfully accused of crimes. She says it is hard to get wrongful conviction cases overturned.

"One of the major obstacles to getting a wrongful conviction overturned is just the sense of they don't exist," Knox said. "And if they do exist they are so, so rare that all these claims of innocence could not possibly be based on reality."

Knox also says that her case was an early onset of how crimes, criminals and victims are perceived today.

"I realized from very early on in my case that it was an early sign of where we were going to be heading in terms of tribalism and in terms of echo chambers," Knox said. "It really all comes down to a rather adversarial mindset that is beset with confirmation bias."&nbsp;

And it's not just one side of the spectrum, according to Knox.

"It’s not to say that there are good people on this side and bad people on this side, which is how it is often portrayed," Knox said. "Instead, it’s these facts are meaningful to me and prove my point, and these facts are inconvenient for me so I'm not going to acknowledge them. And that happens on both sides of issues."

Knox, who is a journalist, says the media coverage of criminal cases needs to be narrowed down to the areas of factual information and portray what is in the public interest. She also praised her friends and family who stuck by her during her eight-year ordeal.
