Motions hearing set in murder case

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A motions hearing is set for Thursday for a Hutchinson man facing two counts of first degree murder.

Kyle Hardwick is accused in the deaths of 58-year-old Philip Anstine and 56-year-old Marion Bates in August of 2021.

Two motions will be heard on Thursday. The first is for a bond reduction for Hardwick which is currently $2 million. The second is a motion to exclude any possible witnesses that could come from the county correctional facility. That means the defense wants to discredit or exclude any inmates Hardwick might have talked to.

Hardwick was arrested in Maize September 1 after being listed as a person of interest after Bates and Anstine’s bodies were discovered on a property in eastern Reno County.

Deputies were sent to that location for a check welfare call for a missing person. While searching the property, deputies believed they found the missing person, so they got a warrant to search the entire property and found a second man dead.

Thursday’s hearing begins at 3 p.m. in front of Judge Joe McCarville.
