HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson High School officially opened Sammy’s Shack Tuesday afternoon with a ribbon cutting.

Sammy's Shack open for business

Cosmosphere president and chief executive officer Jim Remar has been appointed to the board of the Giant Screen Cinema Association, an international organization with members representing filmmakers, distributors, and theaters from nearly 30 countries.

Remar joins staff members from the Ontario Science Centre, IMAX Melbourne and the Tennessee Aquarium, among others, as newly elected board members representing theaters.

Cosmosphere’s two-story Carey Digital Dome Theater features a 4K digital projection system that envelopes viewers in an immersive theater experience.

The Carey Digital Dome Theater presents several showings of educational documentaries during Cosmosphere’s regular hours, with popular feature films available on weekends.

“The GSCA is the group that oversees the large format film industry with over 260 members,” said Remar. “This is a great opportunity for the Cosmosphere to be engaged within the industry, but more importantly to play a leadership role.”

Remar’s term begins January 1, 2022 and will continue for two years.

Cosmosphere CEO Elected to Giant Screen Cinema Association Board

USD 308, Hutchinson NEA to celebrate American Education Week beginning Nov. 15

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler USD 313 School Board got an update on the Ad Astra Virtual Academy during Monday's agenda session.

In its first year, the school currently has an enrollment of 81 students. Of those 81 students, more than half, 44, are at the high school level. 

While the school emphasized that they were not trying to take students away from surrounding districts, a few have joined the virtual academy including students from as far away as Garden City. Of the 81 students, 26 are from the McPherson school district and 27 from Buhler.&nbsp;

Director Erica Shook says that while the academy may have developed from what was learned during the pandemic in 2020, most of the students that are in the virtual format are there for other reasons. The enrollment is not expected to drop when the pandemic eases, but it certainly could go up if COVID numbers were to climb quickly.

The school is currently taking enrollment for the spring semester.&nbsp;

USD 313 Board gets update on Ad Astra Virtual Academy

Kansas Department of Transportation offices in south central Kansas are committed to keeping the highways cleared whenever inclement weather occurs.

<a>In line with workforce shortages across the nation, KDOT does not have enough equipment operators – the agency’s primary snowplow operators – in a number of areas across Kansas. These shortages create the potential for highways to not be cleared of snow and ice as quickly as in the past.</a>

The agency has dealt with reduced staffing in the past, but the shortages are greater this year. South central KDOT offices are about 29% short of snowplow operators needed to be fully staffed, with a 30% shortage of needed equipment operators statewide.

“KDOT is facing significant staffing shortages in some areas and will work proactively to clear Kansas highways by shifting crews to affected areas and pretreating highways and bridges whenever possible,” said Secretary Julie Lorenz. “Our snowplow operators work 12-hour shifts and do their best to keep the roads open and the public moving.”

Magnet at Allen will dismiss at 11:50 a.m., McCandless will dismiss at 11:20 a.m., HMS 7 and HMS 8 will dismiss at 12:05 p.m. and all other elementaries will dismiss at 11:30 a.m.

Arrival times are as normal. Lunch will be served before school is let out. All bus routes will run. Contact your building for specifics on transportation.

Veterans in free at Cosmosphere Thursday

The Reno County Veterans Memorial is getting ready to have more names put up.

"We're going to have 315 more names engraved," said Kelly Danyluk with the memorial. "This will be the week of the 22nd this month, so the week of Thanksgiving. One full panel. It's a 4 by 8 piece of granite that will be engraved on site by LaDuke Memorial out of Concordia."

The new panel will begin a new organization of the names going forward.

"Our new names that we're putting on will start, each panel, as we put them up, will be alphabetized per panel going forward," Danyluk said. "There will be a line signifying where the initial names were printed versus the new names. Those will just be A-Z, per panel, as we go on."

Over 15,000 names have been submitted for the memorial thus far.

The United Way is hosting an event tonight that is a fundraiser and an opportunity for ladies to get together.

"It is the girls night of the century," said Lisa Gleason with the United Way. "Come and be a part of Shop Local, Give Local."

The event will have 14 boutiques at Memorial Hall with their wares for sale and a fashion show to allow ladies to get their Christmas shopping going and help a great cause.

"It starts at 4:30 p.m. if you want to come a little early, and we go until 8:30 p.m. tonight," said Amy Kraft, campaign chair for the United Way. "What woman doesn't like to see a fashion show? We have a nice little surprise before that. That will be at 6:30 p.m."

Tickets for the event are $20 online or $25 at the door. The vendors are donating 20% of sales today to United Way of Reno County.

Shop Local, Give Local event tonight

A Buhler school bus was hit Monday afternoon east of Hutchinson. According to the Reno County Sheriff's Office, at&nbsp;approximately 4:00 p.m., deputies with the Reno County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident involving a school bus, belonging to the Buhler School District,&nbsp;at 7705 E 4th Ave, Hutchinson, KS. 

When deputies arrived on scene they made contact with the bus driver&nbsp;a&nbsp;69&nbsp;year old male&nbsp;of McPherson, KS and the driver of a second involved vehicle,&nbsp;a&nbsp;28&nbsp;year old female&nbsp;of Hutchinson, KS.

During a thorough accident investigation, deputies determined&nbsp;the car&nbsp;was following the school bus too closely and ran her vehicle into the rear of the bus while it was stopped&nbsp;to let a&nbsp;child off. A witness confirmed the flashing lights and stop sign were functioning&nbsp;on the bus at the time of the accident. 

Due to contradicting reports, it is unclear whether the final child was off the bus at the time of impact. All parties reported no injuries and were wearing their seatbelts.

The bus was driven from the scene and&nbsp;a tow service&nbsp;removed the second vehicle.&nbsp;The driver of the striking car&nbsp;was arrested for driving while revoked and cited for&nbsp;following too closely.

According to the Reno County Sheriff's Office, at&nbsp;approximately 4:00 p.m., deputies with the Reno County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident involving a school bus, belonging to the Buhler School District,&nbsp;at 7705 E 4th Ave, Hutchinson, KS. When deputies arrived on scene they made contact with the bus driver&nbsp;a&nbsp;69&nbsp;year old male&nbsp;of McPherson, KS and the driver of a second involved vehicle,&nbsp;a&nbsp;28&nbsp;year old female&nbsp;of Hutchinson, KS.During a thorough accident investigation, deputies determined&nbsp;the car&nbsp;was following the school bus too closely and ran her vehicle into the rear of the bus while it was stopped&nbsp;to let a&nbsp;child off. A witness confirmed the flashing lights and stop sign were functioning&nbsp;on the bus at the time of the accident. Due to contradicting reports, it is unclear whether the final child was off the bus at the time of impact. All parties reported no injuries and were wearing their seatbelts.The bus was driven from the scene and&nbsp;a tow service&nbsp;removed the second vehicle.&nbsp;The driver of the striking car&nbsp;was arrested for driving while revoked and cited for&nbsp;following too closely.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 School Board will have a fairly light agenda Monday evening. The board will get a presentation from Wiley Elementary School as part of its annual meeting and visit.

The board will also go into executive session several times for personnel matters and discuss the new tentative contract and negotiations with the local teachers union.

The board will approve copy paper purchases and hear the usual reports.

Monday's USD 308 board meeting begins at 6 p.m. at Wiley Elementary School.

Teachers contract, Wiley presentation on USD 308 board agenda

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson High School is opening its new spirit store, Sammy’s Shack, with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday at 1 p.m.

The idea for Sammy’s Shack originated with principal Ryan Ewy, who wanted to offer a one-stop-shop for students and the community to purchase gear to show their school spirit. The store will be managed by business students, similarly to the Sweet Treat coffee shop located inside the Hutchinson Career &amp; Technical Education Academy building. The store will carry Booster Club merchandise, as well as other products that the students will select and manage.

A unique aspect of Sammy’s Shack is that it will be open to the public during regular school hours. A door for the public was installed so parents and community members can visit during school hours and certain game nights.

Sammy's Shack opens at HHS Tuesday

NEWTON, Kan. — A Kansas man was killed following an accident while doing maintenance on a large recreational vehicle in Harvey County Saturday.

Authorities say 66-year-old Robert Brooks of Wichita was working on the RV with another individual in the 6600 block of South Anderson Road, south of Newton, when the RV rolled on top of him around 5:30 p.m.&nbsp;

The RV was partially lifted off the ground with a floor jack and wheel chocks. Brooks was working underneath the vehicle when it rolled forward off the safety equipment and onto him.

The other individual called 911. The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office and Newton Fire/EMS were called, but Brooks was pronounced dead at the scene.

The speaker will be Amanda Knox who is an exoneree, journalist, public speaker and author of the New York Times best-selling memoir, “Waiting to Be Heard."

Between 2007 and 2015, she spent nearly four years in an Italian prison and eight years on trial for a murder she didn’t commit. Knox now works to shed light on the issues of wrongful conviction, truth seeking, and public shaming, and to inspire people towards empathy and perspective.

Knox will headline next Dillon Lecture Series program

KINGMAN, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Transportation said a crack repair project on a stretch of U.S. 54 in Kingman County will begin soon.

The project is expected to begin around Nov. 22 and be completed in early December.

The work will be on U.S. 54 from the east city limits of Kingman east to the Kansas 14 junction, a distance 0f about 9 miles.

During the work, traffic will be restricted to one lane and controlled by flaggers and a pilot car. Motorists should be prepared to stop and face delays of up to 15 minutes.

BUHLER, Kan. — Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman said Monday's transition to remote learning for Buhler Grade School has gone well. Remote learning was instituted after the number of COVID-19 cases jumped dramatically last week.

“The staff has communicated with their parents and their classes and their students. And they have a schedule they’re following for Zoom meetings, and they have materials delivered,” Couchman said. “The transition this morning was pretty smooth. It’s not their first time doing it.”&nbsp;

Counchman said lunches are being distributed for BGS students in the same format they were during the summer meal program.

“Lunch will be provided on a drive-through basis, very similar to how we did it during the summer,” Couchman said. “There will be a sack lunch and a breakfast provided.”

There is no need to sign up. Parents are asked to arrive at the north end of the school to pick up meals.

As of Monday, Buhler Grade School had 26 positive cases. Couchman said the district has had 65 positive cases overall.

HAVEN, Kan. — Haven USD 312 has named its first Impact Award winner for the 2021-22 school year.

The winner for this quarter is Mindy Barter. Barter has served the district for the past seven years and currently teaches at Haven High School. Barter was nominated by the students who produced hand-written letters in her support.&nbsp;

Barter is one of the high school representatives for the District Leadership Team and the MTSS Reading Team. She has been a past volleyball coach and still is connected to the program by working home events.

Bater will be recognized at Monday’s school board meeting. The Impact Award is handed out each quarter in USD 312. One of the four winners is then named the Impact Award winner for the year at the end of the school year.

Barter named Impact Award winner at Haven USD 312

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With fall here, it is deer rutting season — and the number of car/deer accidents has increased over the past several weeks as the animals become more active.&nbsp;

“We see most of our accidents at dusk, just as the sun is starting to go down and the first hour or two afterward and right at sunrise,” said Levi Blumanhourst of the Reno County Sheriff’s Department.&nbsp;

Blumanhourst said that while people want to take evasive action to save their vehicle, it's best to just hold the line and try to stop before hitting the animal.

“What we ask people to do is make sure you have your headlights on and that you’re scanning the ditch, scanning the fields and tree rows as you approach them,” Blumanhourst said. “If a deer happens to come&nbsp; up onto the road in front of you, the best thing you can do is slow down and not swerve to avoid the deer. When people swerve, that's when we normally see more of an injury accident.”

Blumanhourst said if you see one deer stay alert, because chances are there is another one or two along with it.

Police: Motorists need to be more alert for deer

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Hutchinson's annual Youth of the Year event is coming up next month.

"Being named Youth of the Year, it's probably the highest honor a Boys and Girls Club member can make within our club or any club," said Skip Wilson with the Boys and Girls Club. "It's the premier recognition program for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. It promotes service to the club, community and family and then academic success, strong moral character, life goals, poise and public speaking ability."

There are three Hutchinson students that are part of the competition locally this year, Kimberly Villanueva, Bostyn Castor and Noah Khochar.

"Each state winner this year is going to receive $5000, each state winner is going to recieve $10,000 of college scholarships and that's renewable for four years," Wilson said. "Then, six of those winners across the country will compete nationally and the winner of that will get a $25,000 renewable for four years so, $100,000 for higher learning. We're excited. We have three great, great candidates."

The Youth of the Year banquet is December 2nd from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Crystal Ballroom in Hutchinson.

"Hospice and Home Care Month is a special time that we, as an industry and an agency honor all of our staff," said Stacy Goss, Community Liason for Hospice &amp; HomeCare of Reno County. "That includes nurses, home care aides, social workers, chaplains, homemakers, volunteers and our administration. Every day our staff is able to make a remarkable difference in the lives of our patients and their families. We take health care and we make it personal and we bring it home to our patients."

Hospice is a tough subject for some families, but with the holidays coming up, it's one that may need to be addressed.

"There is a common myth that hospice means giving up or throwing in the towel," Goss said. "The reality is that hospice care is just one more form of care. It focuses on reducing pain and discomfort for the patient while improving their quality of life. These objectives are just as important as treating an illness itself. It's been statistically proven that caregiver support is also very important. We provide support to the family unit as a whole through volunteer services to sit with the patients, veteran volunteers, as well, for those veterans on services. We provide social work and home health aides, all sorts of different levels of care, besides just the standard nursing care."

There are some events coming up to commemorate Veterans Day this week.

"November 10, we will be recognizing our staff and volunteers within the Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System with a short ceremony," Goss said. "This will include the dedication of a new flagpole and the new foyer, which has been redecorated at the Hospice House. On Veterans Day, on November 11, we have three events. We will be buying coffee for veterans and a guest. If you are in Hutch, this will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Scuttlebutts. In Lyons, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., we will be at Brew 56. If you're in McPherson, we will be serving root beer floats from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the McPherson Senior Center."

The project is part of Hospice's participation in "We Honor Veterans," a national program established to promote collaboration between the Department of Veterans Affairs and hospice organizations throughout the nation.

In the wake of the pandemic, it is expected that Americans will have a healthy appetite to gather with friends and family over Thanksgiving and Christmas and to begin the new year.

"There are still interruptions that we're seeing, for lack of a better word, in travel right now, due to COVID and other things related to that," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "Right now, the key to holiday travel is, if you haven't made your travel plans, whether that's hotels, whether that's flights, rental cars, if you're needing those for the holiday season, you need to get on that right away."

This is especially true if your destination is too far to drive.

"We suggest that you book your rental cars early," Steward said. "There have still been shortages of rental cars in some locations. We're hearing a lot about issues with staffing with airlines right now, causing some flight cancellations. There may be similar issues with TSA staffing, unfortunately, right as we go into the Thanksgiving holiday."

In the wake of the pandemic, it is expected that Americans will have a healthy appetite to gather with friends and family over Thanksgiving and Christmas and to begin the new year."There are still interruptions that we're seeing, for lack of a better word, in travel right now, due to COVID and other things related to that," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "Right now, the key to holiday travel is, if you haven't made your travel plans, whether that's hotels, whether that's flights, rental cars, if you're needing those for the holiday season, you need to get on that right away."This is especially true if your destination is too far to drive."We suggest that you book your rental cars early," Steward said. "There have still been shortages of rental cars in some locations. We're hearing a lot about issues with staffing with airlines right now, causing some flight cancellations.
