For those who use the 43rd Street intersection at the new bridge, you're now going to have to stop at the corner of Old K-61 and 43rd.

"Due to the sight distance issue when stopped on Old K61 and looking east  towards the newly constructed bridge a 4-way stop will be installed," said Reno County Public Works Director Don Brittain. 

The plan is to have the new stop signs up by midday Thursday.

Four-way stop going in near new 43rd bridge

WASHINGTON, D.C. — First District Congressman Tracey Mann spoke on the floor of the U.S. House in opposition to President Biden's Build Back Better reconciliation plan.

"President Biden, Speaker Pelosi, and House Democrats are grossly misusing the noble process of reconciliation," Rep. Mann said. "Intended to be a tool of compromise for Congress to reduce the national deficit, the Democrat party is instead using it to jam through partisan legislation through a deadlock Congress. The Build Back Better plan will only add to an already enormous deficit, drive up inflation on the middle class, and shrink the privacy and rights of the American people."

Earlier this month House Democrats attempted to push through the $1.75 trillion reconciliation package in conjunction with the $1.3 trillion infrastructure package. The infrastructure package passed the House of Representatives without reconciliation. Rep. Mann voted against the infrastructure package and will vote against the Build Back Better plan when it reaches the House Floor.

Mann continues to oppose infrastructure bills

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Museum is hosting a Christmas open-house event on Thursday, Dec. 16, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.&nbsp;

The museum is holding the inaugural Christmas in the Courtyard, which will bring back all of the traditions from the past many remember so fondly. Visitors will enjoy the lights, hot cocoa, cider, music, activities and there may even be a Santa sighting.&nbsp;

All of the exhibits, including the Oodleplex children’s area, will be open late. The museum says that Christmas in the Courtyard is a time to celebrate the historic moments of the holiday season.

Museum to host Christmas in the Courtyard Dec. 16

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Regional Medical Center announced this week that Janet Brock, APRN, will bring 30 years of local healthcare expertise to Hutchinson Hematology and Oncology, joining Dr. Sawsan Amireh’s staff.

Brock, a longtime member of the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center team, has worked with the Hutchinson Clinic and as a hospitalist with Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Since September 2019, she has served as the Employee Health Manager at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

Brock holds a master’s degree in Family Practice from Wichita State University, a bachelor’s in Nursing from WSU, and an associate in Nursing from Hutchinson Community College.

Brock described the new position as an exciting and important opportunity. “Oncology patients, for good reasons, are often overwhelmed by their prognoses,” Brock said. “At the same time, I have found there is no one more appreciative of your time than an oncology patient.”

Ken Johnson, President and CEO of Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, said Janet will be a great asset to the staff at Hutchinson Hematology and Oncology. “Janet has a vast background in multiple facets of healthcare. That experience, coupled with a special calling to work with oncology patients, makes her a perfect fit for this new position,” Johnson said. “Her distinguished resume in healthcare is a great preparation for her new responsibilities.”

Brock and her husband, Paul, are the parents of five grown children.

TEFAP distribution is Sunday

HAVEN, Kan. —&nbsp;Haven Mayor Adam Wright let citizens know Wednesday that the City Office will be closed to the public until after Thanksgiving, due to a recent COVID-19 case within the City building.

"The City of Haven greatly values its citizens and employees and takes their health and safety seriously,"  Wright said. "This temporary change is implemented to provide maximum health and safety for the City’s employees and citizens alike in the best interest of our community."

Office staff will work from home with full abilities to answer customer inquiries over the phone at (620) 465-3618, through email at <a href="mailto:cityclerk@havencityhall.org">cityclerk@havencityhall.org</a> or <a href="mailto:utilityclerk@havencityhall.org">utilityclerk@havencityhall.org</a> and via Facebook Messenger. Payments for court fines, utility bills, dog tags, etc. may be placed through the slot on the door of 120 S. Kansas Avenue or made via telephone or Internet.

Building permit applications will be facilitated through mail, fax, or email.  Those needing an inspection should schedule directly with the Building Inspector, Charles Arndt, at (316) 680-9566.  All other City operations will operate normally, including the burn site.

As of now, the plan is to reopen the office on Monday, Nov. 29.

Haven city office work to be done from employee homes until after Thanksgiving

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fair just completed two days of meetings with stakeholders and others regarding the future of The Bison Arena. The building, which is one of the oldest on the fairgrounds, is in need of renovation both cosmetically and structurally.&nbsp;

“We had four focus groups, and it was legislators, it was county commissioners, we had commodity groups, and our board and staff,” GM Bryan Schulz said. “Everything was fantastic, we had a great meeting opportunity for everyone to give their input on what they would like to see in The Bison Arena.”

The state fair would like to use the building for ag-related exhibits or education.

“We’ve been talking an ag innovation center, but ag is so broad, so we’re talking an innovation center that can encompass a lot of things,” Schulz said.&nbsp;

But the building is old and not only does it need to have a purpose for the fair, it also has to be safe, according to Schulz.

“Our biggest thing is to make sure that it’s structurally sound first off and foremost,” Schulz said. “And then working with the commodity groups and organizers in the community and the state to bring education in agriculture to that facility.”

The Bison Arena&nbsp; was constructed in 1937. During World War II the arena was used by the Navy as a training center.&nbsp; More recently it has been used for small animal shows throughout the year, and during the Fair the arena hosted the Antique Tractor Pulling Contest and other smaller livestock events.

The facility was last used for shows at the 2019 Fair. &nbsp; After years of concern expressed by the Fire Marshall, the Bison Arena was finally deemed unsafe after the 2019 Fair. &nbsp; It has since been used by the Kansas State Fair staff for maintenance and storage.

Bison arena discussed in 2 days of meetings

AgTrax named Agri-Business of the Year

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — One person was injured in a two-vehicle accident Tuesday in Hutchinson.

According to Hutchinson police, Roxanna Myrick of Hutchinson was at the intersection of Blanchard and K-61 when she pulled out from the stop sign and into the path of an oncoming car driven by Barbara Highland.

Myrick suffered minor injuries and was transported by EMS to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment. Highland was not injured. The accident happened around 12:25 p.m.

Accident injures one Tuesday

Kan. —The Reno County Health Department will be doing a COVID-19 booster clinic from 10:30 to 1:30 at The Salvation Army on Thursday during the Friendship Meals program. It is free and for walk-in only.&nbsp;There would be an administration fee only if a person has insurance.

Otherwise, the health department is administering vaccines during their normal operating hours. Walk-ins are accepted for those age 12 and over wanting primary doses, or those over 18 wanting boosters. Appointments are required for children aged 5-11. Call 620-694-2900 and select option 6 for scheduling.

This announcement comes as active COVID-19 cases continue to rise in Reno County and are currently at 381. According to the Reno County Health Department, there is a high risk of community transmission. As of now50.06% of Reno County residents have received at least one dose of vaccine.

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, along with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), announced Wednesday that fully vaccinated Kansans over the age of 18 are now eligible for COVID-19 booster doses if it has been at least six months since the completion of a primary series of Moderna or Pfizer vaccine, or two months after a Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine. You may choose to receive a different booster vaccine from your original primary dose as well.

Kan. — The City of Hutchinson doesn't yet know if its application for a roundabout project to replace bridges on the Woodie Seat Freeway is going to be allowed.

"We're waiting on that," said City Manager Jeff Cantrell. "I'm expecting to get that any day now. It's something that, we're excited to hear the results on it. We haven't heard any bad news, but at the same time, we haven't heard anything officially affirming it."

The City Council will have to approve acceptance of the grant award.

"There would then be design phases associated with that project," Cantrell said. "If approved, that's where I see most of the interface occurring with the community would be the design phase. It's frustrating, because people want to know, what's it going to look like? We don't yet know. We know we have some possibilities for design that will be beneficial to the neighborhood."

One real concern is getting pedestrians across if roundabouts are used.

"If a person has to walk an additional three or four hundred feet to get to a safer location to cross, that will be one of the factors that we will have to work through also, on the pedestrian aspect of that. That will be an exciting piece of that project, if awarded."

That project has received some negative pushback within the immediate neighborhood. In fact, that was the main issue that prompted Brock Wells to run for City Council. He ultimately lost the race for the SW District seat to Greg Fast.

Kan. — A collaboration of 21 churches in Hutchinson will participate in the annual KEEP OUR LIGHTS ON food drive tonight, Wednesday Nov. 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. 

This is a food drive to assist the Reno County food bank and other helping organizations with food.

"Thank you to the community who has been so generous in providing help," said organizer Lovella Kelley. "Lots of people have benefited from this project."

 Any church that has their lights on will accept your donation. Items such as peanut butter, tuna, canned chicken, cereal and other items that are non-perishable or donations to purchase items for food pantries are welcome.

Cosmosphere camp gift packages still available

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two Hutchinson Public School educators are being nominated for the 2023 Kansas Teacher of the Year program.&nbsp;

Carly Torres, a fifth-grade teacher at Wiley Elementary, and Rhyanna Reilly, an English teacher at Hutchinson High School, are being nominated for the 2023 Kansas Teacher of the Year award. These two educators will move on to be considered for state recognition by the Kansas State Department of Education Kansas Teacher of the Year program committee.

This state award recognizes exemplary teachers with five or more years of experience who achieve excellence in the classroom, create a school culture of respect and success, and deliberately connect classrooms to key stakeholders and families to foster a strong community.

“We are very proud of our nominees and know that they are fantastic representatives of what it means to be a Salthawk educator,” Superintendent Mike Folks said. “These two teachers are exemplary and we are happy to see them being recognized for their hard work.”

Nominees will be honored at regional ceremonies in March 2022 with state finalists announced at the State Awards Banquet in September 2022.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Planning Commission will start once again with regulations on commercial wind farms when it meets Thursday.

Three different cases will be heard. The first deals with height and bulk regulations for wind farms, the second will deal with amending the zoning jurisdiction and establishing non-zoned areas of the county as available for potential wind projects.

The third will deal with amendments to the comprehensive plan that deals with land use related to wind energy. A moratorium on wind development is in place until the public hearings at the planning level can be held.

The commission will take public comment on all three cases. Thursday's meeting begins at 4:30 p.m. at the Public Works facility at 600 Scott Blvd.

Planning Commission to go over wind farm regulations Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council approved some small changes to city codes regarding parking lots during Tuesday’s meeting. The changes deal with lots that see little traffic, such as RV and boat storage facilities.

Under the changes, owners of those lots will be able to use asphalt millings and slurry seal for the lots rather than asphalt or concrete.&nbsp;

Planning Director Ryan Hvitlok noted last month just before a planning commission meeting that the changes will be beneficial to business owners while still providing adequate appearance and performance.

One zoning matter that did not pass at Tuesday's meeting was an amendment that would allow chain-link fence to be used as a barrier provided it has slats running through it. Currently, such fencing is not allowed on the front or street-side yard of a property or along streets or highways.

Staff recommended that the ordinance stay in place and the planning commission agreed 8-0 to keep things as they are. With that, the council voted 3-2 to approve the changes. Since the passage required four votes in favor of the measure, the proposal did not pass.

City Council approves parking lot regulations

NICKERSON, Kan. — On a split vote, the Nickerson City Council approved a new ordinance during Monday's meeting it hopes will deal with the large amount of vacant housing in the city.

Under the ordinance, property owners with vacant homes or structures will have to work with the city to try to find either new tenants or owners for the vacant parcels. The city says it will waive building permit fees and come up with other incentives to entice owners to make improvements or sell.&nbsp;

The ordinance also requires building owners to pay a registration fee of $50 for a home and $100 for a commercial building. Owners will also have to pay the minimum utility fee each month. If nothing happens to the property in the first year, the registration fee goes up to $250 for a home and $500 for a commercial building.

City Clerk April Beshears says the city currently has more than 40 vacant homes. Just the minimum utility fees will generate about $18,000 per year. Beshears says the city hopes people will respond. Letters to the property owners are going out this week.

Nickerson City Council passes ordinance to deal with vacant homes

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man pleaded no contest Tuesday to lesser charges, in a case where he was originally accused of aggravated kidnapping. 

Twenty-two-year-old Braxton Allen pleaded to two counts of criminal restraint and two counts of aggravated battery. The two counts of aggravated robbery were dropped.

Allen was arrested Oct. 1 of last year after police took a report from two women who said they were beaten, restrained, and had property damaged and taken from them by a known male, later identified as Allen.

Allen was arrested a short time later. The two criminal restraint counts are misdemeanors, each with a potential penalty of up to a year in jail and up to a $2500 fine. 

Based on the sentencing grid, the two aggravated battery counts could result in anywhere from 11 months to 34 months behind bars.

Sentencing in the case is set for January 7, 2022 in front of Judge Joe McCarville.

Kan. — Michael Ables with STRATACA spoke to the Hutchinson City Council Tuesday on the light display they have ongoing at the museum. 

"Everybody's been at the Salt Museum, at least at one time or another," Ables said. "However, what you see is there's salt, there's more salt, there's more salt. So, what we decided to do is basically lighten things up a little."

They had decided to do this to create a more festive mood during the pandemic.

"We kind of give Clark Griswold a run for his money," Ables said. "We're enhancing the lights in a dark spot. As we're coming out of this pandemic, we're hoping that we're able to continue to see the growth and expansion and change an environment which everybody has seen at least once."

The light display will continue at STRATACA through January 9th.

STRATACA continues holiday light display

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The total number of COVID cases has jumped by more than 530 since Nov 1.

As of Tuesday morning, the total number of county residents that have tested positive for COVID stands at 11,112.&nbsp;

The number of active cases is staying rather flat at 338. By comparison, on November 16 of 2020 the active case count was at 997. The number of cases in the first 12 days of November of last year jumped by 1,241.

It’s something the Reno County Health Department continues to watch.

“We definitely have seen a bump in cases again and when you look at pandemics you see them come in waves,” Karen Hamnmersmith with the Reno County Health Department said.&nbsp;

Hammersmith says that a combination of vaccinations and better understanding of the virus is helping keep the numbers in check.

“What I think is helping from that first wave is the vaccine,” Hammersmith said. “We really are attributing that it hasn’t spiked to a thousand.”&nbsp;

Hammersmith says that since last year treatment for COVID has improved especially with the use of monoclonal antibodies.

“The treatment is out there as well, we have a better treatment with the monoclonal antibodies,” Hammersmith said. “We do see as the numbers go up we still see more hospitalizations, but we really want to get the word out about the monoclonal antibodies.”

The number of fatalities from COVID in the county is still at 172.

COVID surge is staying mild at this time

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The renovations to the Hutchinson Police Department continue to move along. The facility which is more than 50 years old has been under a major renovation including a new 911 call center and improved office and storage space. HPD Chief Jeff Hooper gave an update to the Hutchinson City Council during their Tuesday’s meeting.

“The sidewalks are completed and they went in this last week and the paving in the parking lot is done,” Hooper said. “ We’ve completed the finishing touches on the lobby.” The lobby contains a wall of honor for past police chiefs and those who have retired from the force.

Another added touch the department wants in the renovated facility is some design work in the front lobby.

“One of my goals was to open that up to the public, make it a welcome and inviting space to honor the police department,” Hooper said. “One of my ideas that we’re going to undertake is we want to solicit local artists and we’re going to do some murals inside that front lobby.”

Any interested artists need to contact Lieutenant Gates at the information provided below by December 31st, 2021. Each rendering will be reviewed by the Hutchinson Police Department and the final selection will be made at the beginning of January 2022. This project will need to be completed before Hutchinson Police Department’s remodel grand opening in the spring of 2022.

Council hears update on law enforcement center renovation

Beginning Saturday, November 20 through Monday, Nov 29, 2021 Hutchinson Police Department will join many other law enforcement agencies across the state, including the Kansas Highway Patrol, in the Kansas Thanksgiving Safe Arrival traffic enforcement campaign.    

Although all Kansas Traffic Laws will be enforced, this extra provision will be aggressively enforcing our occupant protection laws. While the objective of this campaign is to target the unbelted and incorrectly restrained, we also provide education that serves as a reminder that buckling up saves lives.    

A grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will support overtime enforcement efforts.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Schools has been recognized by the Kansas State Department of Education with two awards based on achievements in student post-secondary success and social-emotional growth. USD 308 was notified of the recognition through communication from Kansas Commissioner of Education Dr. Randy Watson.

The Kansas State Department of Education recognized the school district with the Commissioners Award and the Copper STAR Recognition. The Commissioners Award recognizes districts that outperform their predicted post-secondary effectiveness rate. The Copper STAR Recognition distinguishes the district’s work in achieving student development in social, emotional and character competencies that promote learning and success in life.

“This recognition means a great deal to our district,” Mike Folks, superintendent of Hutchinson Public Schools said. “We are so proud to receive these awards that reflect the hard work our staff has put towards the success of each of our students.”&nbsp;

The Kansas STAR Recognition Program seeks to provide Kansas districts an opportunity to validate the coherent, rigorous and sustained commitment required to improve adult and student outcomes.
