YODER&nbsp;— The Yoder Charter School chicken barbecue on Saturday raised&nbsp;over $4,000 towards future projects and supplies for YCS students education.

The school is hoping to raise meat chickens again next year and the kids also will be raising a flock of egg laying chicks and selling eggs and collecting those. 

Students are hoping to hatch them from fertilized eggs and watch them all the way through next school year through laying eggs as well as doing lots of the research and the background knowledge that comes with that. 

One of the classes is working on planting a native garden, with a program through the Dyck Arboretum in Hesston.&nbsp; 

The school also hopes to begin composting waste here at school, talking about agriculture, as well as sustainability and environmental impact of all their projects.

There are still a few spots available in each of the Kindergarten through 8th grade classrooms for next year’s enrollment. Contact the school if you’d like to enroll your child.&nbsp;

STRATACA with special offer May 21 and 22

The South Hutchinson City Council will vote on a new City Treasurer at their meeting Monday.

Rhonda Stillwell has served the City of South Hutchinson as its treasurer for 22 years. Earlier this year, she communicated her desire to step away from these duties. Mayor Nisly and city staff worked to find a replacement.

Sheila Stevens has been identified as the best candidate to fill this vacancy and Mayor Nisly wants to appoint her to fill the remainder of Stillwell’s term pending confirmation by a vote of the council.

Also on the agenda, the city council will accept a USDA grant for cost sharing on a police vehicle. The grant is for 55% of the vehicle cost, or around $30,200.

The council will also discuss the upcoming 4th of July celebration and special projects regarding workforce housing and economic development.

In addition, the citywide garage sale and clean up day has been set for Saturday, June 11th. A sign-up form was created so that residents planning to sell items could list their address, what time they are starting their day, and what types of items they are selling. This sign up form has been pinned to the City's Facebook page.

Wichita SBA office hosting training for established small business leaders

HAVEN, Kan. — It is a light agenda for the Haven City Council when it meets in regular session on Monday.

The council will go over several matters with the recreation department regarding personnel matters and hear from several citizens during the public comment period. The council will also go into executive session once again to discuss the ongoing legal matters surrounding the city swimming pool and hear the 2023 budget proposal from the city library.

Finally, the council will hear from Public Works and the police department. Monday’s meeting of the Haven City Council begins at 7 p.m. at an alternate location at the Community Building at 215 South Reno Avenue in Haven.

Haven City Council meets Monday

Surveys of drivers by AAA say they want new innovations in auto technology to continue.

"Nearly 80% of drivers surveyed want automakers to focus on improving fuel economy," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "Obviously, with the gas prices we're seeing at the pumps now, that makes a lot of sense. We also have heard that 76% of drivers want active driving assistance systems. Things like automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, those sorts of technology."

That new tech is often available in electric cars.

"You'll see a lot of electric vehicles on our 2022 car guide," Steward said. "This year's edition, the winner of the top vehicle across all categories ended up being the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Premium AWD. It earned the top overall score."

All category winners for 2022 are electric, plug-in electric hybrid, or hybrid vehicles, though it's important to note that the survey itself was scored by the Automotive Research Center (ARC) of the Automobile Club of Southern California, a member of the AAA federation of motor clubs and may not quite be ready logistically for the rural areas of Kansas.

"Electric vehicles are initially focused on cities and metro areas and major interstate thoroughfares," Steward said. "That's where the charging systems are going to be. That's going to be where the largest proliferation of electric vehicles is going to be, in the larger markets to start out with. No doubt, it's going to take a long time to get that electric network built out in our more rural areas, of which Kansas obviously, has a lot."

According to <a href="https://afdc.energy.gov/fuels/electricity_locations.html#/find/nearest?fuel=ELEC&amp;ev_levels=dc_fast">the U.S. Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center, there are still large areas of Kansas that do not have public charging stations</a>, though new sites are constantly being added.

HUTCHINSON,&nbsp; Kan. — The Haven and McPherson police departments were two of a handful of state law enforcement agencies to make donations of protective equipment to Ukrainian military forces.&nbsp;

Among the protective equipment being donated were approximately 300 vests and 50 helmets. The equipment varies in size and level of protection, but will be distributed to both military and law enforcement officials within Ukraine. Sen. Roger&nbsp; Marshall was joined by Eudora Police Chief Wes Lovett; Mike Bergmeier, owner of ShieldAg of South Hutchinson; and Daniel Rauchholz, owner of Farmada – Kansans who were instrumental in the collection of the protective equipment.&nbsp;

Donations of the protective equipment were collected from Carbondale Police Department, Colby Police Department, Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Eudora Police Department, Fort Hays State University Police, Haven Police Department, Kansas Attorney General’s Office, Leavenworth Police Department, McPherson Police Department, Overland Park Police Department, Park City Police Department, Riley County Police Department, University of Kansas Office of Public Safety, Wellington Police Department, and Wichita State University Police Department.

Local law enforcement agencies donate equipment to Ukraine

STERLING, Kan. — KDOT says a portion of 18th Street east of Sterling is expected to be closed for several hours on Wednesday, May 18, as part of ongoing work on the K-14 realignment.

The part being closed is on 18th Street between Avenue V and Avenue U in Rice County. The closure is expected to be from 7 a.m. until some time in the afternoon.

The temporary closing will allow workers to remove a collapsed pipe.

The work is part of the 15-mile, $81.7 million realignment of K-14 from Hutchinson to Sterling. The project is expected to be completed in June 2023. &nbsp;

18th Street near Sterling to close 1 day next week

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Once again, local law enforcement gathered to remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty with the annual Peace Officers Memorial ceremony.&nbsp;

Opening remarks were made by Reno County Sheriff Darrian Campbell. This year, the guest speaker was once again Retired Lt. Col. Alan Stoecklein from the Kansas Highway Patrol. In addition to his distinguished career with the Kansas Highway Patrol, Lt. Col. Stoecklein also served as interim Chief of Police for the Hutchinson Police Department before Chief Jeff Hooper was sworn in.&nbsp;

Hooper gave the closing remarks and the combined honor guard of the Reno County Sheriff's Department and Hutchinson Police Department presented the colors and the playing of taps.

Among those remembered Friday wasReno County Undersheriff Edward Metz, who died in 1901 when he was pushed under a train; Deputy Thomas Simpson Fowler, who was shot and killed by a burglary suspect in 1911; Officer Reason Sherman Monroe, who was fatally shot nine times while investigating a family disturbance in 1924; Police Lt. Shelby Comstock, who was shot and killed after stopping a vehicle in 1956; and Officer Kenneth M. Kennedy, who was shot and killed while investigating liquor crimes in 1972 and KHP Officer Conroy O’Brien who was shot and killed during a traffic stop on the Kansas Turnpike in 1978.

Michael Ables with STRATACA explains that even though they only get a small part of the quarter cent sales tax, it means a lot to their budget.

"We receive 5%," Ables said. "That equates to just under 10% of our overall budget. What we use that money for, over the last several years, you can actually see some of those improvements on our facilities. We actually started to take a look at the exterior. Obviously, we needed to just kind of hold on, hold on, hold on during the pandemic. Then, when we started to see the light at the end of the tunnel, we were able to pull the trigger a little bit better."

In addition to investing in infrastructure, STRATACA also invested in its people.

"We actually did something that was pretty unheard of during the pandemic, we actually started to look at our employees," Ables said. "We knew that we needed to take a strong look at our employees and help them out during the hardest time in our history. We actually did pay wage increases, so we can actually improve our retention rate."

"We're actually starting to work on new exhibits, interactive exhibits," Ables said. "We actually want to continue to work and improve the facility underground, that will actually allow the kids to have a lot more fun, and the adult kids, as well. What we're talking about doing is bringing down cranes and mini excavators so they can play as if they were miners themselves."

The quarter cent sales tax will be on the general election ballot in November.

The Salvation Army is holding a donut eating contest June 4 in Hutchinson. Donuts are a Salvation Army tradition.

"During World War I, the Salvation Army sent ladies over to serve comfort food like cakes and pies," said Major Paul James with the Salvation Army in Hutchinson. "They didn't have all the resources, as you can imagine. Sometimes you have a good plan, but the resources aren't always there. They got creative, and they figured they could make donuts. They made it in the helmets of the servicemen that were over there and they got termed the nickname, donut lassie and the men that were serving during World War I and World War II came back, and they were called doughboys."

The event is a fundraiser for Salvation Army camps and for international work of the Salvation Army.

"The kids that we send to camp each year are from ages 7 to 17," James said. "We send kids to camp at a regional camp in Kansas City. $10 is what we charge for each child for an overnight camp for a week. Those camps go from sports camps to music camp to character building camp, to like roughing it camp, so there's a range of that and a couple different opportunities for that. If you have questions on how to get your kid involved, we just had somebody new that hasn't gone to camp just signed up their teenager. There's a teen camp specifically for that age group. You can call our main office at (620) 663-3353. If you talk to Karen, she's our receptionist, she can get you set up with a code to get that discount."

The event itself will happen at the Salvation Army Thrift Store that Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and they're still looking for competitors, as well as folks to come down and watch.

"I'm competing as well," James said. "It's my desire to win. My record is five and a half donuts in five minutes, and they weren't very good donuts. I want to thank Daylight Donuts for their generosity in helping us to have some donuts for this event. We'll be giving out donuts, as well as coffee, during that morning, so if you come out and you want to be a spectator, you won't leave empty handed, either. We hope to have a good crowd out there. There's three ways to win, eating the most donuts, the people's choice award, which is through online donations, or raising the most dough. Those who can't or don't know how, you can donate with cash or check to one of those individuals that's competing."

There will be little red kettles in front of each competitor that morning at the Salvation Army Thrift Store at 200 South Main in Hutchinson.

Meagher will take over for Jeff Cantrell, whose contract was not renewed by the council during a special meeting last week.&nbsp;

Items sought for New Educator Welcome Bags program

HARPER, Kan. — The Kansas Wheat Harvest is fast approaching with cutting expected in about four to six weeks, depending on where you are in Kansas.

This year's crop has taken a beating because of dry conditions throughout the winter and spring, especially in western Kansas.

“We actually had our wheat plot tour today (Thursday) and the specialist from K-State was here,” Carr said. “In two weeks we went from just starting to head, to fully heading out and it’s been through flowering.”

While that’s progress, the hot weather may keep that head from bringing its full potential.

“There’s a berry in there,” Carr said. “It’s filling and it’s not quite fully developed, I’m saying it's about 90% developed. I don’t know that our yield potential is what it was.”

While the heat and dry weather has played a major part in a lower harvest forecast for Kansas, Carr says the wheat is also being affected by other pressure.

“We had some insect pressure or we had some mite pressure that did some damage that the wheat wasn’t able to grow out of,” Carr said. “So we have a decreased opportunity there as well.”

Carr says that she isn’t completely sure that the recent rain will increase yield numbers for south-central Kansas. Right now, the wheat is standing about 12-14 inches shorter than normal because of the dry conditions.

“Countywide no, field-to-field difference, yes, and that will depend on when it was planted and what stage it was in. We had a little bit of fall moisture up to October,” Carr said. “I don't think that the rains we had are going to make a major difference.”

Carr says, if all goes as planned, cutting should begin along the Oklahoma border around June 12.

Wheat feeling strain from weather

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Hutchinson based Genzada Pharmaceuticals announced today the official opening of a Phase 1B clinical trial for the oral therapeutic GZ17-6.02 (6.02) in combination with capecitabine in patients with metastatic breast cancer. The first site to open is Texas Oncology in Dallas, Texas, and will be headed by leading breast cancer expert Dr. Joyce O’Shaughnessy.&nbsp;

“This is a significant and exciting achievement for our company,” Chief Operating Officer Cameron West, MD said. “Our Phase 1 study demonstrated that 6.02 has a favorable safety profile and provided clinical benefit to patients. Based on this data, in addition to the robust preclinical data, we are optimistic that 6.02 in combination with capecitabine in patients with metastatic breast cancer may provide increased&nbsp; benefit over single-agent capecitabine.”&nbsp;

Genzada begins trial on breast cancer treatment

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After taking time off because of the pandemic, Hutchinson USD 308’s Graber Elementary School celebrated its Laps for Learning fundraiser. The event is a daylong happening where the students get a chance to get outside and get plenty of exercise, and help the school at the same time.

“Laps for Learning is where we raise money for our school,” Physical Education teacher Shane Warren said. “Kids run laps at our track and they get beads every time they make a lap to put on a keychain.”&nbsp;

Students went online to gather donations from patrons with all funds going to school activities. Warren says Laps for Learning is not just running. Many other activities are scheduled throughout the day.

“Laps for Learning is part of our Superkids Day and we have 14 stations. Each class goes to each station for 20 minutes all day long,” Warren said. “Our sixth grade classes are actually running the stations for us and so they’re doing a good job with that.”

Warren says it is good to be able to get back outside again.

“We haven’t done this for three years, so a lot of people don’t even remember us doing it,” Warren said. “It’s a good way to get out and it’s been a long year.”

The event was held a week later than originally scheduled because of bad weather. All proceeds benefit the school's PTO and other activities.

Graber Elementary School brings back Laps for Learning event

Kan. —The 2022 Signing Day for technical education programs through HutchCC and Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy was Thursday morning at the Stringer Fine Arts Center at Hutchinson Community College. 

Travis Riebel with the Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy is glad to have an event for these students to help them know how vital technical education can be.

"What we want to do is celebrate the choice that they have made to enter a career path of their choosing," Riebel said. "Also, we want to recognize the work that it takes to put in to get technical certificates and the reward when they finish those certificates."

Part of this is that students can use their hands on strengths to help them finish strong academically.

"Students get to enter training programs as juniors and seniors in high school," Riebel said. "To me, it's really interesting and fun to see students as they complete their education as a normal high school student while entering college and training programs all at the same time."

It's important to note that a high school diploma by itself isn't enough for most jobs any more.

"The research by the Jamestown Institute suggests that 76% of jobs will require some sort of a degree, certification, certificate, whatever that might be, beyond a high school diploma. It is important for us to have these programs to fill the need for the jobs we have locally as well as within our region."

Employers like The Bradbury Group, Buck Plumbing and A.C., Inc., Collins Bus/Rev Group, Ideatek, Kansas Electric, Lowen Corporation, SDI, Superior Boiler, Takako, Viega and Wesley Towers sponsored the event.

"Our training programs match up very well to what our local business and industries are looking for with students," Riebel said. "We hope to make that connection, providing them with employment when they get out of the programs."

Over 250 students were invited based upon their anticipated enrollment in the programs for next year, though Riebel said they will take some enrollments for those who qualify all the way up until school starts in August, as space becomes available.

Signing Day marks the start of career paths

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Public Works says that work is scheduled to begin soon on the West 11th Avenue reconstruction project. 

The first phase of work will involve complete reconstruction of 11th Avenue from Woodlawn to just east of Orchard Street. That area of W 11th from Whiteside to to Orchard will be closed during that time. Trash service will be available for pick up at the east end of the work during this phase of the project. Public works says that this part of the project should take about seven weeks to complete.

The first phase of the project is part of an overall reconstruction of about one mile of W 11th Avenue between Main and the flood canal. It includes a new roadway, curb and gutter and sidewalks between the canal and Monroe. Between Monroe and Main the road will be partially reconstructed including removing and replacing sidewalks, curb and gutter and a mill and overlay of the street surface.&nbsp;

Vogts/ Parga LLC of Newton is doing the work at a cost of $2,664,126. The project is expected to last throughout the summer causing street closures in various sections of W 11th.

Work on W. 11th Ave. to start soon

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The sale of the Obee school property has run into another snag as of a few weeks ago, according to Hutchinson Airport Manager Pieter Miller.

"They have agreed to the lease that we offered them for the property just to the west side of the school there," Miller said. "The snag at this point is that property also includes, I mean, the school itself includes a force main sewer line that runs through the airport and ties into the city's sanitary sewer system over here at the intersection of 4th and Airport Road. I guess the lift station grinder pump, whatever it is, wasn't working the way it was and it was looking to be pretty expensive to get that working the way that it is, so they were exploring their options of what they would be able to do."

Miller hasn't heard any more about it since last month, but the buyers needed to figure out if fixing the sewer line is or is not too expensive to make the overall deal work.

"We're kind of just waiting," Miller said. "They've had some plumbers and some engineers, I guess, go over and talk with them and figure out what's going on."

The City Council approved sharing the cost of required FAA survey work to get the sale accomplished earlier this year.

The Hutchinson Human Relations Commission will meet Wednesday, May 18th at 4 p.m. at City Hall.

The Kansas State Fair Board is going to allow much more roaming with alcohol this year, thanks to the passage of Senate Bill 2 this legislative session. They made that decision Tuesday.

"The board approved us moving forward for the 2022 Kansas State Fair and the 2022 Fair Food and Tunes," Schulz said. "The parameters for both events are going to be all inside the gate areas of the Kansas State Fair."

There will be some limited building exceptions where no beverages of any kind are allowed.

"We know for sure, centennial hall 4H and then there will be a few other buildings that will be excluded," Schulz said. "There will be proper signage at the doors and the building managers will have that understanding that they do not allow any beverages inside. Like our Domestic Arts and all that kind of stuff. We try keeping food, beverages, everything out of those buildings just because of the sheer issues we would have if somebody would spill on any of that stuff."

The fair will also be addressing security concerns, as well.

"We're going to have a little more presence," Schulz said. "We're working with the Highway Patrol to make sure that they are aware of all the stuff that is going to happen. We're actually going to have to do some additional training with our gate people to make sure that they understand, you know, that no beverages are taken out."

Everyone will be carded everywhere alcohol is sold and it will only be poured into clear plastic cups for carrying throughout the grounds and every buyer who wants to carry around will have to have a wristband and the wristbands will be different every day of the fair. The first event with the new rules is Fair Food and Tunes next month.

USD 313 looking to fill vacant board seat

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A man wanted on numerous felony warrants in Reno County has been arrested.

Detectives with the Hutchinson Police Department Special Operations Division, Reno County Drug Unit, Wichita Drug Unit, and Sedgwick County Drug Unit worked together to locate and arrest 38-year-old Kenneth D. Miller in south Wichita.&nbsp;

Miller was wanted on numerous felony cases involving the distribution of drugs. Miller was transported to the Reno County Jail and remains in custody with no bond.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutch Rec will once again host the Smallville 5K and Superhero one mile races downtown.&nbsp;

This year's event will once again coincide with the Smallville Festival on June 18. Registration is $25 for those over 16 and $20 for those 15 and younger. Registration is due by June 15.&nbsp;
