Sales tax survey to hit select mailboxes

John Jenkinson says this year’s harvest delivered some of the best yields in years — but now the challenge is finding a place for all the grain.

Jenkinson said the 2025 harvest season went “smooth,” with nearly ideal weather and timely rains that boosted yields far beyond what many expected.

“We had rains at just the right time,” he said. “Just enough to get us to the next one. A lot of farmers around us are saying the same thing — the yields were absolutely way above what we expected.”

Record sorghum and corn — and nowhere to put it

But the strong harvest has created a new problem: storage.

Across western Kansas — from Colby to the Oklahoma Panhandle — Jenkinson said grain is piling up on the ground because elevators are full.

“I’ve seen farmers clearing off machinery lots just to pile their own crop on their own ground,” he said. “One elevator near us said they only had room for four more loads of milo and three of corn — then they were shutting the doors.”

With more grain still in the field, Jenkinson said the lack of storage highlights the urgent need for expanded markets and follow-through on trade agreements.

“We are awash in grain right now,” he said. “China has said they’d buy U.S. sorghum, corn and soybeans — but they’ve yet to do that. Meanwhile, they’re buying cheaper grain from Brazil.”

Brazil competition and ethanol demand

Jenkinson said Brazil’s lower production costs and the strength of the U.S. dollar are making American grain less competitive.

“We’ve got a big competitor in South America,” he said. “They can grow it cheaper, and China doesn’t see them as an adversary.”

Ethanol plants across western Kansas are running at full capacity and using as much corn and sorghum as they can, he said, but it won’t be enough on its own.

“We have to find new markets — both overseas and domestically — for all the grain we can grow," he added.

Jenkinson also voiced frustration that a government-funded biofuel plant in Georgia recently purchased Brazilian product instead of U.S. grain. “They can actually buy Brazilian grain cheaper and ship it into the United States than you can buy American grain,” he said.

Even with big yields, Jenkinson said farmers are barely breaking even because of high costs for fertilizer, fuel, chemicals and insurance. “If we hadn’t had those extra bushels, we would be facing a deficit,” he said. “Margins are tight, and we’ve got to turn that around.”

He warned that if conditions don’t improve, the U.S. risks losing too many farmers. “We do not want to get into a position where we’ve eliminated so many farmers that we have to start importing our food.”

Wheat crop looks good — but markets still lag

Despite concerns in other sectors, Jenkinson said this year’s winter wheat is off to a strong start. “All of our wheat is up and looking good,” he said. “Western Kansas wheat is in pretty good shape.”

Farmers and traders are awaiting the first USDA world supply-and-demand report since the government shutdown halted monthly data.

USDA offices scrambling after shutdown

The recent government shutdown halted much of the work at USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA), leaving farmers behind on necessary paperwork.

Jenkinson said local offices will need time to catch up. “They’ve missed a lot of work that usually gets done this time of year,” he said. “FSA employees are going to have to hit the ground running.”

Among the delayed tasks are 578 forms, crop reports, and insurance paperwork for 2026 wheat.

Farm bill stalled, bankruptcies rising

Congress has not yet passed a new farm bill, leaving producers without clarity on future price supports or risk-management tools. “Right now nobody has assurances,” Jenkinson said. “It’s critical that Congress gives us a direction.”

He said SNAP benefits will resume soon, but how that impacts the farm bill is still unclear.

As for bankruptcies, Jenkinson said Kansas hasn’t seen a spike — but the national picture is troubling. “Nationwide, yes, we’ve seen an uptick of two or three percent,” he said. “It’s a sad state of affairs.”

Jenkinson said despite challenges, farmers remain committed — and hopeful that policymakers will act with urgency.

“We need trade deals, we need markets, and we need Congress to focus on agriculture,” he said. “We’ve got good people in the FSA offices and good farmers out here. We’re all looking forward to getting back to normal.”

Jenkinson says record harvest facing storage, market challenges

With Thanksgiving among the busiest travel holidays of the year, the Hutchinson Police Department is urging motorists to stay vigilant and buckle up as traffic volumes rise across Kansas.

HPD is joining law enforcement agencies statewide for the annual Thanksgiving Safe Arrival campaign, running Nov. 22–29. During the week-long effort, drivers can expect an increased law-enforcement presence on local roads as officers focus on seat belt safety and traffic education.

According to HPD, proper seat belt use remains the most effective way to prevent serious injury or death in a crash. Officers say that while many drivers buckle up routinely, improper or inconsistent use continues to be a major factor in avoidable injuries.

The department is also reminding families that fit matters when it comes to seat belts and child restraints. Safety recommendations include:

“Thanksgiving brings heavy traffic, long trips, and more distractions,” the department said. “The simplest step you can take to protect yourself and your loved ones is to buckle up every time.”

HPD encourages motorists to plan ahead, drive attentively, and make seat belt safety a top priority throughout the holiday travel period.

Buhler Mennonite Church and Ideatek seek volunteers for Dec. 6 meal-packaging event to Produce 50K meals for local food banks

HUTCHINSON — The historic Fox Theater is already off to a strong start this season, and Executive Director Josh Davies says the momentum is only building as the venue heads into the holidays. Following standout performances from Home Free and the high-energy ensemble Tilt, the Fox now turns its attention to its next major act: the Squirrel Nut Zippers on Friday, Nov. 21.

Davies says the acclaimed New Orleans-style jazz and swing band brings an unmistakable throwback energy to the stage—one that longtime fans and newcomers alike will appreciate.

“They were at the forefront of that revival of New Orleans jazz and swing in the ’90s,” Davies said. “It’s basically like traveling back in time to the roaring ’20s. High-energy horns, great rhythm—just fantastic music you don’t hear on the radio anymore.”

The band’s upcoming tour includes a special show titled “Jazz from the Back O’ Town,” mixing their biggest hits with storytelling about the history of the genre. Unlike groups such as Postmodern Jukebox, which reimagines modern songs in vintage styles, the Squirrel Nut Zippers perform largely original material rooted in traditional jazz and swing.

Davies shared that season ticket sales were up slightly from last year—a sign of strong community support. While season packages are no longer available after the first show of the year, individual tickets remain on sale for all remaining performances.

He also encouraged the community to consider Fox Theater tickets, film passes, and gift certificates for the upcoming holiday season.

“It’s a great gift—better than another pair of socks,” Davies laughed. “Give someone the gift of live entertainment and a wonderful evening in downtown Hutchinson.”

One of the Fox’s most beloved traditions—the annual Christmas film series—returns in a major way. Davies said attendance has grown every year, prompting the theater to expand the slate of holiday classics.

All films are just $5, or $4.50 with a Fox Film Series Pass. Each pass includes 10 movie admissions and five free small popcorns.

“We’ve shown Christmas Vacation for over a decade, and it’s always a highlight,” Davies said. “Our holiday films draw huge crowds—it’s become a big tradition for families.”

Another cherished local tradition returns this year: the Prairie Nutcracker, presented every other December by the Prairie Nutcracker Foundation.

The production runs Dec. 12–14 and features an original Kansas-themed adaptation of the classic ballet. The show has been part of the Fox Theater’s holiday season for more than two decades, drawing families and community members of all ages.

“For me, it doesn’t feel like Christmas on an off year when we don’t have Prairie Nutcracker,” Davies said. “It’s a truly special production—unique, homegrown, and an amazing way to celebrate the holidays.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Museum is gearing up for its annual fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 15, with a 1960s-themed celebration called “Peace, Love &amp; Preservation.” The event, designed to raise essential operating funds, takes place at The Red Shed Music Venue, located at 6311 U.S. Highway 61, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Bronwyn Page, Director of Operations for the museum, says the gathering is not just a themed party—it's a lifeline.

“Funding has been reduced in recent years,” Page said in an interview on KWBW. “While we’re grateful for a recent increase from county commissioners, we’re still in need of support to keep the museum accessible to the community, preserve our growing collection, and make room for new donations.”

A Celebration of History and Preservation

The night includes a three-course seated dinner, silent auction, live entertainment, and a nod to the museum’s legacy as home to the historic KWBW radio station on its second floor. Attendees can expect a lively atmosphere, complete with 1960s flair, a trivia session, and party favors.

The theme ties into two milestones: the museum’s 60th year since the Reno County Historical Society was formed, and the current featured exhibit on the Vietnam War, which was curated in partnership with Humanities Kansas and features stories from local veterans that were also archived at the Library of Congress.

Tickets are $85 per person, or $115 for those opting for unlimited drinks from the event’s bar. A limited-time “flash sale” will offer tickets at a discounted price of $55 through the museum’s Facebook page.

The Reno County Museum holds a vast collection of Hutchinson and regional history, but with limited staff and storage space, Page says they're “running out of room.”

“For the first time, we’ve had to put a pause on accepting new donations because we're at capacity,” she said. "This event will help us work toward new solutions, while also keeping admission free for the public."

In addition to financial donations, Page said community members can help by volunteering their time—whether it’s to help with interior cleaning, exhibit setup, or outdoor landscaping. The museum also accepts donations of supplies through an online Amazon wishlist.

A wide variety of silent auction items will be up for bid during the event, including locally made artwork, gift certificates from Hutchinson businesses, and donations from the Cosmosphere and Fox Theatre.

The Hutchinson Zoo is inviting adults to kick off the holiday season in style with a festive evening of lights, drinks, and animal encounters. Prairie Nights: Holiday Lights will be held Friday Dec. 5th, from 6 to 9 p.m., offering a rare adults-only experience inside the zoo’s glowing winter setting.

Hutch Zoo announces adults-only 'Prairie Nights Holiday Lights' events

Reno County commissioners agreed Wednesday to delay any decision on adjusting their own salaries, opting instead to revisit the issue in one month after further study and constituent outreach.&nbsp;

The discussion, which stretched more than an hour, followed a presentation by Human Resources Director Helen Foster, who outlined current commissioner pay, historical context, and the challenges the county faces in attracting a broader pool of candidates for public office.&nbsp;

Background: Lowest Commissioner Pay in Kansas&nbsp;

Foster noted that Reno County’s five commissioners each earn $11,340 per year, the lowest salary for county commissioners in the state. When the county transitioned from a three-member to a five-member commission years ago, the total compensation line item was simply divided five ways rather than increased, resulting in the current pay level.&nbsp;

Commissioners are classified at Grade 40 on the county pay scale—an entry rate of $46.83 per hour—a figure HR used to model what compensation would look like if pay were based on estimated workloads of five, seven, 10, or 15 hours per week.&nbsp;

Foster also noted that questions regularly arise from KPERS about the unusually low salary for elected officials and that commissioners need to remain compliant with FLSA minimum wage thresholds based on the hours they work.&nbsp;

Commissioners Share Personal Impacts&nbsp;

Commissioners spoke candidly about the financial sacrifices tied to serving.&nbsp;

Commissioner Randy Parks said publicly that he lost a job because of the time demands of office, leading to four months of unemployment before returning to the workforce. Parks also added that a former commissioner who exhausted all paid time off and even lost family health insurance while serving.&nbsp;

“It limits it to somebody who’s maybe not looking for an income and has extra time,” Parks said, a sentiment echoed by commissioners. “I want to see everyday working people have the chance to serve,” one added.&nbsp;

Another commissioner noted that younger residents or parents often can’t participate due to the financial strain, even if they have interest in public service.&nbsp;

While commissioners generally agreed the current pay is too low, not all felt comfortable voting to raise their own compensation.&nbsp;

“I came into office saying I wouldn’t raise my salary,” Parks said. “I understand the need, but I don’t know if I want to vote for it.”&nbsp;

Others argued that pay should reflect the workload and responsibility of representing nearly 60,000 people and managing a county budget of approximately $96 million.&nbsp;

There was also debate about whether elected officials should be compared to standard county employees, given the unique nature of the role, fluctuating schedules, and expectations to attend community functions—many outside standard business hours.&nbsp;

Commissioners acknowledged they have not consistently tracked their hours and felt a decision would be premature without better information.&nbsp;

Some weeks involve minimal commitments, while others require 15–20 hours or more between meetings, study sessions, community events, constituent calls, and reviewing hundreds of pages of contracts and agenda materials.&nbsp;

Commissioner Ron Hirst recommended gathering work-hour data over the next several weeks and consulting constituents before making a final determination.&nbsp;

Motion to Table Passes Unanimously&nbsp;

After extensive discussion, commissioners agreed to table the issue and bring it back to the agenda at their December 17 meeting.&nbsp;

Community blood drive set for Nov. 17-19

HARVEY COUNTY —On Wednesday, Harvey County Chief Judge Wilder sentenced 54-year-old Shyla McFrederic of Sedgwick, Kansa for Distribution of Methamphetamine, a severity level 1 drug felony, according to the Harvey County Attorney's office.

The case originated from McFrederick’s arrest in Sedgwick, Kansas, on April 19, 2024, when she was found in possession of 111 grams of methamphetamine, 22 grams of psilocybin, 94 grams of marijuana, and four fentanyl tablets.

Under the Kansas Sentencing Guidelines, McFrederick faced a presumptive prison term of 138 to 154 months in the custody of the Kansas Department of Corrections. Harvey County Attorney Heather Figger requested that the Court impose a 146-month prison sentence, emphasizing that the State had already exercised leniency by dismissing seven felony and five misdemeanor charges across three separate criminal cases as part of the plea agreement.

County Attorney Figger also urged the Court to consider the devastating impact that the distribution of these substances has on the Harvey County community. Counsel for McFrederick requested a downward departure to probation.

In ruling on the matter, Chief Judge Wilder noted that the case involved “the highest level drug felony that exists and that is only for the methamphetamine you possessed and not the other drugs.”

During sentencing, the Court cited a substance use evaluation completed by McFrederick in September 2025, which indicated that she still was not accepting responsibility for her crimes. The Court also noted that McFrederick’s no contest plea was not an acceptance of responsibility.

After consideration, Chief Judge Wilder granted a durational departure, sentencing McFrederick to 60 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections. The Court based this reduced sentence on McFrederick’s decision to waive her preliminary hearing and enter a plea—thereby saving the State the expense of further proceedings—and some limited acceptance of responsibility demonstrated by the actions she had taken to improve herself.

Kansas drug dealer gets plea deal after caught with meth, fentanyl pills

As temperatures drop and the first hard frost settles in, Hutchinson veterinarian Dr. John Austin of Hutchinson Small Animal Hospital is reminding pet owners to stay alert to seasonal changes that affect their pets’ health and safety.

Dr. Austin says many fall allergy issues will begin to ease now that cold weather has ended the production of pollen and seasonal plant allergens. However, he cautions pet owners to continue checking for fleas, which may surge briefly as the pests seek warm hosts before dying off in the freeze.

With winter approaching, Austin urges residents to be mindful of how long their pets—especially short-haired or indoor dogs—are left outside. Animals not acclimated to colder temperatures should only be outdoors briefly once true winter weather arrives.

Microchipping and collar ID tags remain important year-round. Austin noted that a visible phone number on a collar often gets a lost pet home faster than a microchip, which requires a veterinary clinic or shelter to scan.

At his clinic, Austin reports an increase in allergies, itching, and gastrointestinal issues, often tied to plants dropping seed pods, berries, and other irritants after an unusually rainy year. He advises pet owners to walk their yards to identify anything their animals could get into.

For homeowners treating lawns or spraying for insects, Austin warns to follow product instructions carefully. Recently, one pet became ill after ingesting residue from a sprayed area. “Insecticides affect the nervous system,” he said, emphasizing the need to keep pets away from treated spaces until fully dry.

Flea-control treatments for yards should be used cautiously, he added, noting that fleas generally hide in shaded, moist areas such as landscaping beds near homes rather than open grass.

Local veterinarian shares key winter pet-care tips as seasons change

HUTCHINSON RENO COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The Farm Focus Family Award began in 1985 as part of National Farm City Week.  There have now been over 100 families in Reno County that have been recognized for their contributions to Reno County Agriculture. This year’s Farm Focus Family Award goes to the Royer family.

Bill and Kelly Royer, along with their sons Alek and Koby, represent six generations of farming in Reno and Harvey counties, with roots that trace back to 1886. 

The Royer family primarily raises wheat, soybeans, and oats, and maintains a small cow-calf operation. Bill has farmed full-time for 38 years, while also working part-time as a Senior Bank Representative at First National Bank of Hutchinson. He’s served on the local school board and continues to volunteer with Haven High School’s Clay Target team.

Kelly is an Account Manager and Senior Interior Designer at the John A. Marshall Company in Wichita. She’s also an active volunteer, lending her time to school, church, 4-H, and community events over the years.

Both Alek and Koby earned agricultural degrees from Kansas State University and returned home to help continue the family legacy. Alek operates a swathing business and volunteers as a firefighter, while Koby works part-time in seed sales with Ohlde Seed.

Recently celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary, Bill and Kelly are proud to farm alongside Bill’s parents, Bill Sr. and Leta, and their sons—three generations working together to meet the challenges and opportunities of modern agriculture.

Royer family named Farm Focus Family of the year

Give blood with Red Cross this month

HUTCHINSON — Reno County Emergency Medical Services is teaming up with The Salvation Army to help families in need this holiday season through its annual “Fill the Ambulance” Food Drive, set for Nov. 14 and 15 at Dillons Marketplace.

EMS crews will be parked outside the store at 3200 Plaza East Drive, collecting non-perishable food items to fill Christmas food boxes distributed to Reno County families.

Organizers are asking community members to donate staple holiday items, including:

Reno County EMS officials say the event is an opportunity for families to spread hope during the holiday season by helping ensure local households have what they need for Christmas meals.

The collected food will go directly into the Salvation Army’s holiday food boxes, which support individuals and families across Reno County.

 <li>Canned corn</li><li>Canned green beans</li><li>Boxed mashed potatoes</li><li>Boxed stuffing mix</li><li>Brownie mix</li><li>Gravy or gravy mix</li>
 </ol>Cash donations will also be accepted.Reno County EMS officials say the event is an opportunity for families to spread hope during the holiday season by helping ensure local households have what they need for Christmas meals.The collected food will go directly into the Salvation Army’s holiday food boxes, which support individuals and families across Reno County.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 100 block of South Main on the east side.

As autos started showing up in Hutchinson in about 1906, so did auto dealerships. The Hutchinson Motor Car Co. was one of the first. The first photo shows that auto dealership, already in its second location, at 116-118 S. Main St. in 1910.

Early dealerships moved often and, by 1913, it had become the Cadillac Sales Co.

In 1919, it was the A.C. King Auto Supplies.

In 1922, the building was the Hutch Auto &amp; Tractor School in conjunction with the Salt City Business College.

By 1928, the location was Skaggs-Safeway Stores.

In 1935, the Hutchinson Electric Service.

In 1945, it was the May Way Feed Store. The second photo shows that with the employees out front.

In the 1950s it was Standard Mercantile Wholesale Liquors.

 </figure>In the 1950s it was Standard Mercantile Wholesale Liquors.Most of us can remember when part of this location was McKenzie Body Shop Upholstery &amp; Trim from 1961 through the 1980s. The third photo shows that enterprise.<figure>

 </figure>In 1998, George and Betsy Andrews purchased the building and Betsy started ArtisTree, a performing arts studio. The fourth photo shows the 116-118 S. Main building today, still ArtisTree, with Sarah Snyder director of the studio, and Betsy Andrews still owner of the business and building.<figure>
