MANHATTAN, Kan. — Kansas farmers wrapping up harvest season are being urged to stay alert to crop diseases that could impact next year’s yields, according to Rodrigo Onofre, row crop plant pathologist with K-State Extension.

For soybean producers, the primary concern remains the soybean cyst nematode (SCN) — a microscopic pest responsible for the greatest yield losses in U.S. soybeans.

“The soybean cyst nematode is the number one yield-limiting pathogen of soybeans,” Onofre said. “In Kansas, we’re seeing high levels of SCN, especially in central Kansas.”

The nematode has now been identified in 64 Kansas counties, accounting for more than 85% of the state’s soybean production. Because it often causes no visible symptoms during the growing season, Onofre said it can silently rob producers of 2 to 10 bushels per acre.

“It’s a difficult pathogen to identify in the field,” he said. “Sometimes we don’t even see it during the year, but then the harvested crop is lower than usual.”

Onofre recommends testing fields for SCN soon after harvest when soil conditions are good for sampling. “It’s going to be easier for you to collect those samples and start planning for next year — either for a better variety, a rotation, or even a seed treatment, depending on your levels,” he said.

Samples can be sent to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.plantpath.k-state.edu/extension/plant-disease-diagnostic-lab">K-State Plant Diagnostic Lab in Manhattan</a>, or producers can contact their local extension agent for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.plantpath.k-state.edu/extension/plant-disease-diagnostic-lab/collection-guidelines">help submitting soil samples</a>.

Corn growers, meanwhile, face increasing challenges from tar spot — a fungal disease that has expanded its reach across Kansas in recent years.

“Tar spot has been in Kansas for three or four seasons now,” Onofre said. “We’ve seen it move toward the western and central parts of the state. That worries me a little bit because those were late-season detections.”

The disease has been especially active in northeast Kansas, but recent reports in Lincoln and Smith counties mark its westward spread. Western Kansas’ reliance on irrigation, coupled with cooler fall temperatures, can create ideal conditions for the disease to thrive.

“Producers should still be scouting for tar spot, but consider adding a corn hybrid that is resistant to tar spot,” Onofre said. “Through resistance alone, we can see yield benefits of up to 10 bushels compared to susceptible hybrids.”

He advised producers to watch for black lesions that resemble insect droppings but don’t rub off the leaf surface. Crop rotation offers limited protection, he added, so hybrid selection remains the best long-term defense. In-season fungicides may also provide benefits.

This fall’s wetter-than-average weather has also increased the risk of corn ear rots, including Diplodia, Gibberella and Aspergillus.

“Moisture is a good thing, but it brings humidity and lower temperatures, which are ideal conditions for moldy ears and potential mycotoxins,” Onofre said.

Diplodia ear rot does not produce mycotoxins, but Gibberella does — posing risks to livestock if infected corn is fed as grain or silage.

Between now and Thanksgiving Day, the donor will contribute $1 for every new Facebook follower — up to $5,000 total — to the Food Bank’s Nourishing Our Future capital campaign.

“This challenge gives everyone with a Facebook account a simple, no-cost way to make a difference,” said Angela Penner, executive director of the Food Bank of Reno County. “Every click of the ‘Follow’ button adds $1 to the campaign and helps us spread the word about the good work happening here.”

Anonymous donor launches Facebook challenge to support Food Bank of Reno County

HUTCHINSON — The Reno County Board of Commissioners will meet Wednesday, November 12, with a full agenda that includes a proposed development agreement with Wifco Steel Products, Inc., participation in a state grant program for small public water systems, and discussion of commissioner compensation.

On the consent agenda, including an agreement aimed at supporting local manufacturing jobs and a proposal to help small water systems access state funding.

The county’s proposed development agreement with ADE-Wifco Steel Products, Inc. outlines a job-creation incentive designed to encourage the Hutchinson-based company to expand operations in Reno County. In exchange for tax or infrastructure incentives, Wifco commits to meeting specific job-creation and investment benchmarks within a defined timeframe.

The agreement includes accountability provisions — allowing the county to audit job numbers and investment levels — and claw-back clauses to recover benefits if performance goals are not met. County officials say the deal supports economic growth while protecting public funds through measurable outcomes.

Also on the consent agenda, commissioners will consider participation in the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s Small Systems Grant Program, which provides 50% matching funds for engineering or planning work in small water systems serving fewer than 1,000 residents.
If approved, Reno County would be positioned to help rural or unincorporated systems apply for upgrades or compliance assistance, reducing local costs and improving drinking-water reliability.

Also on the consent agenda is the approval of the minutes from the commission meetings on Aug. 13, and Aug. 27, plus the approval of vouchers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The board’s primary action item focuses on reviewing commissioner pay levels. The discussion will evaluate current compensation against peer counties and consider options such as updated pay rates, periodic review schedules, or aligning commissioner pay with that of other elected officials.

County staff notes that the review aims to ensure compensation reflects the growing responsibilities of commissioners — including oversight of major infrastructure projects, public safety services, and constituent engagement.

As a public matter, any pay adjustment would be subject to discussion and likely take effect with future budget cycles.

The Reno County Commission is meeting this week at 10 a.m. following the canvass of last week's general election. The commission meeting is in the Veterans' Room of the Reno County Courthouse.&nbsp;

County commission to review development agreement

RICE COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 3:30p.m. Tuesday in Rice County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Chevy Cavalier driven by Adelina&nbsp;Tobisch, 16, Lyons, was northbound on Grand Avenue just south of U.S. 56. The driver made a westbound turn onto Taylor Street. A southbound 2014 Harley Davidson Tri-Glide driven by Lane Tilton, 66, Sterling, struck the right side of the car.

EMS transported Tilton to the Rice County Hospital. Tobisch was not injured. Tilton was not wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

Three-day weather outlook

HUTCHINSON — The University of Kansas Transition to Postsecondary Education (KU TPE) program will host an information session in partnership with the Reno County Education Cooperative (RCEC) on Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Reno County Special Education Cooperative, 2500 E. 30th Ave.

The KU TPE program is a two-year undergraduate certificate designed for KU students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The program provides an inclusive college experience that allows participants to take KU courses for credit, join student clubs and organizations, live in student housing, and participate in both paid and unpaid career internships. Upon completion, students earn a KU undergraduate certificate on their transcript.

During the Hutchinson session, families will have the opportunity to meet KU TPE staff, learn more about the program, hear from current participants, and ask questions.

The event is open to families of middle and high school students, though parents of younger students interested in future opportunities are also encouraged to attend.

A Hutchinson-based nonprofit is making a statewide impact by ensuring that no Kansas veteran faces hardship alone. KS4Vets, founded to bridge the gap between veterans in need and the resources available to them, offers assistance ranging from rent and utilities to groceries, ramps, and transportation.

“We help any veteran who has a need,” said Curtis Jeffries, the treasurer for KS4Vets. “We’re also a place where people who aren’t veterans can come and help veterans. Whether that’s financial help, volunteering, or simply connecting someone to the right resources, that’s what we’re here for.”

KS4Vets’ services cover just about any urgent need a veteran might face — paying rent, keeping the lights on. “If there’s a way for us to help, then we will,” added Danielle Stifler, KS4Vets President. “We’ve helped with groceries, gas, ramps for accessibility — you name it.”

The group also serves as a connector between veterans and other service organizations, such as the VA, Red Cross, and Salvation Army. “We kind of look at ourselves like the hub of a wheel,” Jeffries said. “We have spokes going in all directions. If a veteran calls us, we can look through our network and find someone who can help.”

Community Partnerships and Volunteers&nbsp;

KS4Vets works closely with local partners, including the VFW and American Legion, to coordinate community events and special recognitions. Recently, the group helped arrange a color guard ceremony at a local football game to honor a veteran.

For veterans facing homelessness, the organization steps in to provide temporary housing and connections to VA housing programs. “Homeless veterans exist even locally,” Stifler noted. “We’ve helped cover hotel stays until they can get into the right program.”

Community members can support KS4Vets in several easy ways. The group collects aluminum cans for recycling and participates in the Dillons Community Rewards Program, where shoppers can direct a percentage of their purchases to benefit veterans.

Businesses and individuals can also sponsor specific projects, such as building wheelchair ramps or providing transportation. Volunteers — including contractors — are always welcome to join in hands-on projects.

&nbsp;KS4Vets meets the second Friday of every month, featuring guest speakers who share information about veteran resources and programs. Meetings are open to the public and include both in-person and virtual participation.

“If you show up in person, we’ll feed you,” Jeffries said with a laugh. “And if you can’t make it, we livestream on Facebook and offer a Zoom link.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As Veterans Day is celebrated across the country, one Kansas-based organization continues to honor those who served by giving them a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the memorials built in their honor.

Mike Van Campen, president of Kansas Honor Flight, joined us to share the mission behind the program — a mission that has brought nearly 5,000 Kansas veterans to Washington, D.C., since 2012.

“We started Kansas Honor Flight in 2012 after a previous hub in Great Bend closed,” Van Campen said. “Several of us wanted to continue the mission — and 105 flights later, we’ve now taken just under 5,000 veterans to see their memorials.”

The flights — entirely free for veterans — are made possible through donations from individuals, community groups, and schools across Kansas. The organization operates without any state or federal funding.

“The money simply comes from a grateful public,” Van Campen said. “Churches, American Legion posts, schools — it’s incredible how many students and organizations step up to help our veterans make this trip.”

Each flight follows a carefully organized three-day itinerary. Veterans and their guardians depart Wichita on a Monday and fly to Baltimore, where they visit Fort McHenry before touring the nation’s capital.

Tuesday is a full day of remembrance, visiting the World War II, Korean, Vietnam, Air Force, and Navy memorials, as well as the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery for the Changing of the Guard ceremony.

“We apply for permission to hold a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington for each bus,” Van Campen said. “Twelve veterans per flight get to take part in that very special moment — it’s something they’ll never forget.”

The wreaths, he noted, are handmade by one of his high school classmates who crafts them from grapevines grown on his vineyard near Baltimore.

For many veterans — particularly from World War II and Korea — the Honor Flight experience opens the door to conversations their families have never heard before.

“Their kids tell us, ‘Dad never talked about his service until this trip,’” Van Campen shared. “These men and women came home, took off their uniforms, and went back to work. But on these flights, surrounded by fellow veterans, they finally start to share their stories.”

Guardians and Volunteers Make It Possible

Veterans who need assistance are paired with a guardian, someone who ensures their comfort and safety throughout the trip. Guardians — often a child, grandchild, or volunteer — pay their own way, contributing $900 to cover airfare, lodging, and meals. Veterans travel completely free.

“We’ve even had volunteers who’ve gone seven or eight times,” Van Campen said. “They’ll take off work, pay their way, and help a total stranger — just because they want to give back.”

Kansas Honor Flight operates four flights per year — typically in May, June, August, September, and October — carrying around 95 veterans per trip. The waiting list is currently about a year, meaning those who apply now will likely travel in 2026.

HUTCHINSON — The State of Kansas Office of Veteran Services has officially moved into a new home in Hutchinson, now located inside the City of Hutchinson Parks and Facilities Department building at 1600 South Elm Street in Carey Park.

The move establishes a local field office that will make it easier for veterans and their families to access benefits, claims assistance, and other vital support services without having to travel outside the area.

“We’re proud to welcome the Kansas Office of Veteran Services to Carey Park,” said Justin Combs, City of Hutchinson Parks and Facilities Director. “Through this partnership, a field office will be located at our Park Maintenance Facility, helping make it easier for veterans in our community to access the support and resources they deserve.”

The transition to the new location was finalized on October 27, following a temporary setup at the Hutchinson American Legion Post #68, which allowed the agency to operate a mobile office while plans for the move were completed.

According to Eric Rohleder, Deputy Director of the Office of Veteran Services, the new space includes a private office, a spacious waiting area, and plenty of handicapped-accessible parking just steps from the entrance.

The Kansas Office of Veteran Services assists veterans and their families across the state with benefits, healthcare claims, and service-connected support programs.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Having the oven in use for long periods of time with the Thanksgiving turkey can make prepping the holiday meal a challenge. Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee recommends alternate ways to cook turkey and tips to keep it safe.

Near the top of the list: “Be sure you know how to use the equipment properly for the best result,” Blakeslee said.

Whether cooking turkey in the fryer, on the grill, pressure cooker or electric roaster, it’s important to remember safe food handling to ensure a successful Thanksgiving dinner.

“If using a gas grill, the number of burners will affect the placement of the turkey to cook properly,” Blakeslee said. "If using a deep fat fryer, be sure the turkey is completely thawed. Never start with a frozen turkey when deep fat frying.”

She adds: “Be sure to measure the amount of oil to use before you put the turkey into the hot fryer. In some cooking methods, it is best to cut up the turkey before cooking, such as when using a pressure cooker or slow cooker.”

Before cooking a frozen turkey, allow enough time for it to thaw properly. “Thawing in the refrigerator is the best and easiest method,” Blakeslee said. “The estimated time is 24 hours for every four to five pounds, but it may take longer.”

When determining cooking time, Blakeslee recommends checking the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fsis.usda.gov/food-safety/safe-food-handling-and-preparation/poultry/your-safe-thanksgiving-guide">Your Safe Thanksgiving Guide</a>&nbsp;website. It has an online calulator to determine thawing time and cooking time for different cooking methods.

No matter how you cook the turkey, Blakeslee reminds home cooks to keep these tips in mind;

Or ask guests to bring a side dish to share.</li>

How to cook a turkey outside of the oven

TOPEKA, Kan.&nbsp;&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly today announced that the State of Kansas and the Republic of Korea signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that establishes reciprocal driver’s license recognition between the two jurisdictions. The shared agreement allows Korean nationals residing in Kansas to exchange their Korean driver’s license for Kansas credentials — and will facilitate a similar process for Kansans living in Korea, through mutual recognition of licensing standards.

“Kansas is a well-known destination for international travelers, students and professionals — and our shared understanding, goals and vision for economic development has made our working relationship with Korea an important component of the progress happening across the state,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “The signed agreement is testament to Kansas’ commitment to sustaining this mutually beneficial partnership and growing the Kansas economy through Korean investment.”

Under the MOU, both Kansas and the Republic of Korea agreed to recognize driver’s licenses from either jurisdiction — and streamline the exchange process. While Kansas law allows Korean citizens to drive with a valid Korean license for a limited time — the new agreement simplifies credential exchange and reduces administrative barriers for long-term residents.

“Through this memorandum, we’re able to enhance mobility, livability and convenience for our residents, students and professionals who live and work in both Kansas and Korea,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “It reflects the strong and growing partnership between Kansas and the Republic of Korea — one that is built on collaboration, cultural exchange, shared values and mutual economic prosperity.”

Governor Kelly and Kansas Department of Revenue Secretary Mark Burghart signed the agreement on behalf of the State of Kansas, with Director General Ho Seung Kim of the National Police Agency signing on behalf of the Republic of Korea. The signing ceremony took place at the Governor’s Office during the official visit of the Korean delegation.

“The memorandum between Kansas and the Republic of Korea demonstrates the proactive and comprehensive approach the State of Kansas takes with our business partners,”&nbsp;Secretary of Revenue Mark Burghart said. “We appreciate the National Police Agency of Korea for recognizing the strength of Kansas law and providing a reciprocal exchange between our citizens and the Republic of Korea. By fostering this important trade relationship, we open up valuable new opportunities between our two jurisdictions for the long term.”

Korea is among Kansas’ most important global partners, with strong ties in trade, investment and education. The new driver’s license reciprocity agreement will continue to strengthen these bonds and improve the quality of life for residents in both regions.

"On the occasion of the mutual recognition of driver’s license exchange between the National Police Agency of the Republic of Korea and the Department of Revenue of the State of Kansas,"&nbsp;Consul General Junghan Kim from the Korean Consulate in Chicago said. Currently, more than 20 states in the U.S. have similar agreements with Korea, reflecting the close and longstanding relationship between the two countries.

The 15th annual Midwest Superstore Stuff the Trucks food drive rolled past expectations last Friday, delivering one of the largest hauls in the event’s history.

The day began with a $2,500 kickoff donation from Dillons, which also launched special in-store promotions to stretch shoppers’ dollars—including “buy two, get three free” on select Kellogg’s cereals and a series of buy-one-get-one-free offers. Additional sponsors included Pools Plus, Friendly Bingo, Jacam Catalyst, and Hog Wild Pit BBQ, each contributing $500 to the effort.

By the end of the event, which ran from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dillons Marketplace, four fully loaded pickup trucks were packed with donations—an all-time record for the Reno County Food Bank. In total, the event brought in 2,884 pounds of food and $770 in cash contributions from shoppers.

“We’ve never seen anything quite like it,” said Angela Penner, executive director of the Reno County Food Bank. “Four large trucks completely full—that’s something nobody here can remember ever happening before.”

Rob Dreher, program director for KWBW Radio and event coordinator for Eagle Media, said the generosity was overwhelming.
“It really brings back your faith in humanity,” Dreher said. “We saw young kids picking out items with their parents to donate, and even a few people who filled entire shopping carts just for the food bank.”

Dreher credited Dillons Marketplace manager Sheila Regehr and her team for their support in hosting the event for the first time at that location. He also noted that some donors brought checks to contribute toward the KWBW Salvation Army Thanksgiving Concern campaign.

“I want to thank Daren Dunn of KHMY and Randy McKay of KHUT for joining us in donating airtime and doing live broadcasts throughout the day,” Dreher added. “Friday was a great day for Hutchinson—and for the Reno County Food Bank.”

Updated: 'Stuff the Trucks' shatters records for Reno County Food Bank

Beginning Wednesday, Nov. 12, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) plans to begin guardrail updates on the northbound and southbound lanes of I-135 in McPherson County.

Project work on I-135 will continue north about six miles from the Harvey/McPherson county line.

During construction, traffic will be reduced to one lane at a reduced speed at the location of work. Motorists should anticipate minimal delays, not exceeding five minutes.

Jon Fulsom Construction of Wellington is the prime contractor for this $450,000 project and has scheduled the entire project to be completed by February 2026, conditions permitting.

KDOT urges all motorists to stay alert and follow all posted signs when approaching and driving through a work zone. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Chevy Equinox driven by&nbsp; Cheryl Annette&nbsp; Wilson, 68,&nbsp; Hutchinson, was&nbsp;eastbound in the left lane of Kansas 96 at Haven Road.&nbsp; The SUV struck a deer causing the airbags to deploy.

EMS transported Wilson to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

As Kansas and much of rural America struggles with growing healthcare shortages—particularly in primary care—Fort Hays State University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program is preparing the next generation of clinical leaders to fill the gap.

Nationwide, nearly 70 percent of federally designated Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) are in rural regions, where only about 11 percent of the nation’s physicians practice, despite 20 percent of the population residing there. The American Association of Medical Colleges predicts a shortage of up to 86,000 physicians by 2036, with most continuing to concentrate in urban areas, further deepening the crisis for rural communities—especially in Kansas, where many counties are considered "healthcare deserts."

To combat this, FHSU's DNP program focuses on training family nurse practitioners equipped to deliver primary care in underserved rural communities. Students are prepared not just to provide care across the lifespan but also to take on roles in healthcare leadership, policy, and academia—positions often inaccessible to nurses trained at the master’s level.

“The DNP is really about taking patient care to the next level,” said Dr. Michelle Van Der Wege, DNP Program Coordinator at FHSU. “It prepares nurses not just for clinical practice, but for leadership roles that can drive meaningful change in health systems, especially in communities where access is limited.”

A key distinction of FHSU’s DNP program is the emphasis on rural healthcare experience. Each student completes at least 225 clinical hours in a Kansas community with fewer than 10,000 residents. This real-world immersion helps students understand the unique needs of underserved areas, from chronic disease management to overcoming cultural and social barriers to care.

The four-year program includes 900 clinical hours and an additional 600 hours dedicated to the DNP Project—an in-depth initiative that helps students apply evidence-based research to real-world practice, often resulting in measurable improvements to patient care.

Graduates like Michelle "Shelli" Dreiling, a 2023 alum now practicing at Hutchinson Clinic, credit the program’s strong rural focus for shaping their career paths. “I thought I knew what I wanted, but my rural clinical experience changed that,” Dreiling said. “Now I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be—and helping train the next wave of DNP nurses.”

The program graduates approximately a dozen students each year, many of whom remain in or return to rural Kansas communities to practice. Dr. Van Der Wege is one of them. A native of Russell, she started her healthcare career as an EMT and now splits her time between serving patients at a clinic in Larned and shaping future DNP graduates. She’s earned every nursing degree offered by FHSU—from associate's to doctorate.

“Healthcare is personal in rural communities,” Van Der Wege said. “If we don’t train people to serve those communities, they’ll continue to be left behind.”

Hutchinson leaders say the city is doubling down on its commitment to expand housing options, spur neighborhood revitalization, and make homeownership more affordable. Mayor Stacy Goss and Carissa Paxton, the city’s housing coordinator, joined BW Morning Show to discuss the latest progress and tools being used to attract developers and homeowners alike.

Mayor Goss said housing remains the city’s most critical issue — one that directly affects economic development, workforce growth, and even local retail opportunities.

“When a company looks at Hutch or any community, one of the first questions they ask is, ‘Where will our employees live?’” Goss said. “Having available, affordable housing isn’t just a need — it’s a key economic driver.”

Paxton detailed several major initiatives reshaping Hutchinson’s housing landscape, including the Reinvestment Housing Incentive District (RHID) — a state tax tool recently expanded to include communities like Hutchinson.

Projects such as Landmark, Plum Creek, and now the Hayes Street development have all been made possible through RHID financing, which allows the city to fund infrastructure like roads and utilities upfront. Developers repay those costs over time using the property’s increased tax value, rather than passing special assessments onto future homeowners.

“This approach keeps housing affordable for families,” Paxton said. “It’s a win for developers and buyers alike.”

The 36th and Monroe housing project will also use the RHID model, Paxton said. The city is working on that now.&nbsp;

The city is also pursuing Moderate Income Housing (MIH) grants, which provide up to $650,000 to lower construction costs on single-family or rental units. Paxton said the city’s goal is to “layer” MIH funding with RHID financing to make projects financially viable and sustainable.

Two developers had applied for Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) for apartment complexes last year, though neither project received funding approval from the State of Kansas. Paxton said one developer plans to reapply with the city’s support in 2026.

Revitalizing Neighborhoods One Lot at a Time

Another focus for the city remains revitalizing older neighborhoods through infill development. The Hutchinson Land Bank, in partnership with Interfaith Housing, is helping remove blighted properties and make lots available for new homes.

Residents who donate abandoned properties to Interfaith can receive a tax write-off, while developers who build on Land Bank lots can take advantage of waived building permits, water and sewer tap fees, and small startup incentives.

"We have a little bit of startup money if you need help with soft costs, things like that, because we really want to see our south end of Hutchinson neighborhoods revitalized, and the best way to do that is little bits of new construction, just one house at a time," Paxton added.&nbsp;

Among those projects: a collaboration with Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy and Hutchinson Community College, whose building trades students are constructing pair duplexes in the Houston Whiteside District.&nbsp;

"So, they've adjusted our pre-approved plans," said Paxton. "That's another incentive. We have free housing plans for developing on infill lots. They've adjusted our duplex plan to be more historic in character, and so it will fit in really well with the historical homes around it.

Those pre-approved housing plans, available for free on the city’s website, help streamline construction for both developers and individuals.

Homeowners who invest in properties south of 11th Street can also take advantage of the Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP) — a tax rebate that refunds property owners up to 100% of the increased property taxes from improvements for up to 10 years.

“If you sell your home, the new owner keeps that benefit,” Paxton said. “It’s one of the best tools to encourage investment in older neighborhoods.”

The city is also looking at new housing technologies, including structurally insulated panels (SIPs) — the pre-manufactured materials used in New Beginnings’ two small “tiny home” builds earlier this year.

“These panels are strong, energy-efficient, and even tornado-resistant,” Goss said. “We’re exploring code changes that would make it easier to use SIPs for full-sized homes or accessory dwelling units.”

Goss said the city’s housing progress reflects the results of collaboration between government, education, and nonprofits.

“We’re taking a proactive approach — aligning incentives, zoning, and infrastructure with what developers and families need,” Goss said. “Our goal is to make Hutchinson not just a place where people work, but where they want to live.”
