Three-day weather outlook 

Tonight’s scheduled Demolition Derby at the Kansas State Fair has been canceled due to weather conditions.

Fair officials announced the decision Monday evening, citing safety as the top priority for fans, participants, and staff. After monitoring conditions and consulting with local authorities, organizers determined cancellation was the most responsible course of action.

“All ticket holders will receive refunds,” the Fair said in a statement. “Guests who purchased by credit card will automatically receive refunds through Etix, while those who paid cash will be contacted directly by the Kansas State Fair Ticket Office.”

Fair General Manager Bryan Schultz acknowledged the disappointment of canceling one of the Fair’s most popular events but emphasized the need to put safety first.

“We know how much our guests look forward to the Demolition Derby each year,” Schultz said. “While we’re disappointed by tonight’s cancellation, safety must come first. We appreciate everyone’s understanding and look forward to welcoming fans back for the rest of this year’s Fair.”

The Kansas State Fair continues through Sunday, Sept. 14, with a full schedule of entertainment, food, agriculture, and family attractions.

Lowen Corp. finalist in Coolest Thing Made in Kansas competition

Two outstanding Kansas youth were recognized at the Kansas State Fair for their agricultural knowledge and leadership, as Emily Hare or Buhler High School and Ethan Petersilie of LaCrosse High School tied for first place in the 2025 Ag Challenge of Champions.

The statewide competition, hosted by the Kansas Fairs &amp; Festivals Association, brought together top 4-H and FFA members to test their expertise through livestock breed identification, crop and weed recognition, meat cuts, feed analysis, and a comprehensive written exam on agriculture.

Hare and Petersilie emerged from a competitive field, earning identical top scores. Organizers say their performance reflects not only academic excellence, but also a deep commitment to the future of Kansas agriculture.

As a result of their achievement, both winners will receive a $3,000 scholarship to support continued education and leadership development.

“The Challenge of Champions is designed to spotlight the best and brightest in Kansas youth agriculture,” said event coordinator Ty Lewick. “Emily and Ethan exemplify the passion, intelligence, and work ethic that will drive the industry forward.”

The Ag Challenge of Champions is held annually in partnership with the Kansas State Fair.

Hare, Perersilie tie for top honors in Kansas Ag Challenge of Champions

Despite a rainy start Friday, attendance at the Kansas State Fair surged over the weekend, drawing some of the largest crowds in recent years. Fair officials reported that 102,218 people attended opening weekend, with 43,888 visitors on Saturday alone — just shy of a single-day record.

Organizers noted that new ticket-scanning technology is helping them track attendance more accurately than in years past, when paper tickets were weighed to estimate crowd sizes.

Among the highlights of this year’s fair is the 1861 Club, now in its second year. Built by the Kansas State Fair Foundation, the venue has quickly become a popular year-round event space, hosting weddings, fundraisers, and corporate gatherings. Executive Director James Fisher said the club is already booking events as far ahead as 2027.

The Foundation also brought back a crowd favorite absent since 2019: saltwater taffy. Sold in assorted bags featuring 12 flavors — including buttered popcorn and cinnamon — the Kansas State Fair–branded treat is available at the 1861 Club and at the official merchandise booth.

That booth, located in the Fountain House building, is also seeing record sales this year. A new on-demand shirt printing system allows fairgoers to customize designs, colors, and sizes, with plans to fully renovate the space into a retail-style store by next year.

Fair officials say improvements across the fairgrounds, including new asphalt, upgraded lighting, and enhanced sound systems, have drawn praise from visitors — even those traveling cross-country to experience multiple state fairs.

“The fairgrounds look great, and the energy this weekend showed that,” Fisher said. “It’s exciting to be part of something that adds so much value to the community.”

Kansas State Fair sees strong opening weekend

The USD 308 Board of Education will hold its regular meeting this evening at 6 p.m. at the district’s Administration Center.

On the agenda is a Memorandum of Understanding with Trinity United Methodist Church, setting terms for the district to provide bulk lunch services to Trinity’s Treasures Preschool and Childcare Center.

Board members will also consider a resolution for the 2025–2026 Local Option Budget in the amount of $12,439,435.

In addition, the board will vote on the sale of two properties at 2800 and 2804 Morris Road, homes that were built by students through the Career and Technical Education Academy’s building trades program.

Another item calls for approval of $24,137 in upgrades to wiring and software for 11 rooftop HVAC units at the high school, a project needed as the current software is older.&nbsp; The upgrade will tie the units in with the rest of the campus, so they won't have to switch back and forth between two systems.&nbsp;

The next USD 308 Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Sept. 22.

Board of Education to approve budget, upgrades to HVAC systems 

A Texas District Court has returned a decision that gives rights back to property owners and stops radical environmental government. 

 The court ruling will remove the Lesser Prairie Chicken from the list of the endangered species act.  This issue has been going on for many years, and has prevented farmers from working their land, energy producers from extracting oil on their property, and has even prevented civil projects from moving forward. 

Senators Moran and Marshall, and Congressman Mann have been heavily involved in the fight to delist the bird.

Daily bookings 

Monday, Sept. 8, is one of the most popular days at the Kansas State Fair, thanks to Dillons Dollar Day. Gate admission is just $1 for the general public, or FREE with a Dillons Plus Card (one person per card), making it an affordable way for families to experience the fair.

The day kicks off early with the Emergency Preparedness Exhibit opening at 7:00 a.m., followed by the Kansas Electric Cooperatives Demonstration at the Ad Astra Pavilion at 9:00 a.m. From there, fairgoers can enjoy perennial favorites like Agriland, the Birthing Center, the Butter Sculpture, and the Education Center, all opening at 9:00 a.m.

Animal lovers will find plenty to see, with the Llama Display, Moo-U Guided Barn Tours, and open poultry and rabbit exhibits all starting in the morning. Marching Band Day adds extra energy across the fairgrounds beginning at 9:00 a.m.

The fair really comes alive by midday with Hedrick’s Pig Races at 10:00 a.m. and again throughout the day, plus demonstrations in the Milking Parlor and Honey Exhibits. Chainsaw woodcarvers begin their fast-paced shows at 11:00 a.m.

Families can also take in the Hutchinson Zoo &amp; Friends program, magic and ventriloquism shows, and special demonstrations in the Oz Gallery, including porcelain painting and the Kansas Woodcarvers.

By the afternoon, the pace picks up with the Cowboy Circus, It’s Showtime Circus, and crowd-favorite hypnotist Ron Diamond performing at the Peoples Bank and Trust Arena. Local acts like Ella Wellman and The Bennett Hall Band bring live music to the Lowen Corporation Stage at Lake Talbott.

Educational fun continues with Strataca’s Satisfying Salt Surprises at the Education Center and recycled craft demonstrations at the Oz Gallery.

The winning numbers for Saturday nights estimated $1.8 billion jackpot — the second largest in Powerball history — were 11, 23, 44, 61, 62, and Powerball 17.

Two jackpot-winning tickets, worth a staggering $1.8 billion, were sold in Texas and Missouri, splitting the record-setting prize.

Day three brings a full day of shows, exhibits and entertainment at Kansas State Fair 

The Hutchinson Police Department has released the results of its recent participation in the statewide “You Drink. You Drive. You Lose.” enforcement campaign.

Over the course of 2.5 weeks, officers conducted overtime saturation patrols aimed at curbing impaired driving. According to HPD, the extra patrols resulted in 34 citations, 18 warnings, three warrants cleared, and contact with 51 individuals. Officers also made one DUI arrest during the campaign.

Police emphasized that impaired driving remains a personal choice — one that can carry serious consequences. “Impaired driving is a choice that YOU make. Make the right choice,” the department said in its release.

HPD also reminded motorists to always buckle up. “Your seat belt is your best defense against impaired drivers,” the release noted. “Every trip, every time.”

The campaign was part of a larger statewide effort to reduce impaired driving crashes and fatalities by increasing visibility and enforcement on Kansas roadways.

The Cottonwood Building at the Kansas State Fair has been evacuated due to a gas leak.  KSFM staff responded to a report of a smell of gas in the building and detected a dangerous buildup of gas in the building, which contains a food court, on their gas monitor. 

 The Hutchinson Fire Department is at the scene and pushing fresh air into the building to dissipate the gas.  Once they determine it is safe to enter the building, they will find the source of the gas and control it so that the building can re-open.

Day two of the Kansas State Fair promises something for everyone, blending the best of agriculture, arts, food, and entertainment into a full day of activity.

The day begins bright and early at 7 a.m. with the Plein Air Art Competition along Lake Talbott East, where artists capture the fairgrounds in fresh morning light. At 8 a.m., agriculture takes center stage with the 4-H and FFA beef, goat, lamb, and swine market shows, plus working equitation demonstrations. Barn tours kick off at Moo-U, offering families a hands-on learning experience.

Visitors can also stop by the Oz Gallery for demonstrations from Kansas woodcarvers and view the professional art exhibits set up around Lake Talbott.

By 10 a.m., families can catch Dr. Goddard’s Lab in the Education Center, cheer on Hedrick’s Pig Races, or head to the Expo Center for the majestic Draft Horse Show. Food competitions get underway with the King Arthur Donut Contest and the Youth Favorite Cookie Contest Judging.

At noon, the Hutchinson Zoo takes over the Education Center, while crowds gather for the Pies, Pies, and More Pies Contest in the Domestic Arts Building. Families can also enjoy Glenda &amp; Mike’s Magic and Ventriloquism Show lakeside.

Afternoon: Contests and Entertainment

The afternoon brings crowd favorites like the Butter Sculpture Contest and the lively Celebrity Grape Stomp at the Gottschalk Park Gazebo. Music and movement fill the grounds with the Kansas Kountree Kloggers and live performances by Sweet Rhubarb.

For a dose of humor and amazement, hypnotist Ron Diamond performs in the Peoples Bank &amp; Trust Arena, while Gottschalk Park hosts both the Cowboy Circus and It’s Showtime Circus.

Evening: Music, Magic, and Mainstage Acts

As the sun sets, competition heats up with the Draft Horse Pull in the Expo Center and the 4-H/FFA Grand Drive at the Prairie Pavilion. The evening also features Catholic Mass, the Pinewood Derby races, and the poetry showcase Eat Your Words.

Live music fills the air with Hyway 14, 80 Proof Alice, The Girls Next Door, and the Great Plains Jazz Orchestra, spread across various stages.

Finally, the night caps off in grand fashion at 7:30 p.m. with world-renowned comedian and ventriloquist Jeff Dunham taking the Nex-Tech Grandstand, bringing laughs to close out a jam-packed day at the Fair.

Day two at the Kansas State Fair: From livestock to laughter

RENO COUNTY—A family pet died in a house fire in rural Reno County.

Just after noon on Friday,&nbsp;units from Reno County Fire Districts 9, 8, and Reno/Harvey Jt. 2, responded to a house fire in the 14,000 block of Bauman Road, according to&nbsp;Travis Vogt, Reno County Fire Administrator.

 A mutual aide request was made for an engine crew from Mt Hope Fire and Sedgwick County Fire District #1 for man power.

The first arriving units found smoke showing from the roof vents. An interior attack was made and the fire was contained to a single bathroom. 

The home sustained smoke and heat damage throughout. Haven EMS provided rehab for the crews. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries, however one dog was found deceased. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation.&nbsp;

Friday football forecast

The 2025 Kansas State Fair opened its gates Friday morning under a light drizzle — a reminder, as Kansas State Fair General Manager Bryan Schulz put it, that “you just never know what you’re going to have for weather in Kansas.” While the rain dampened the sidewalks, spirits remained high as opening ceremonies celebrated the start of 10 days of agriculture, entertainment, and tradition.

The day began with a ribbon cutting at the People’s Bank &amp; Trust Arena, where a new canopy has been added to provide shade and shelter for visitors. Schulz noted that the canopy was just one of many improvements across the grounds, alongside ongoing renovations of the historic Bison Building. Exterior work is nearly complete, and interior upgrades will begin later this month.

Concertgoers can look forward to a strong lineup of entertainment, beginning tonight with Sam Barber and Avery Anna at the Nex-Tech Grandstand. Ticket sales are already running ahead of last year’s pace, according to Schulz, with strong presales and plenty of walk-up traffic expected. “Our percentage sold is way above where we had expected it to be,” he said.

Visitors will also notice new food options this year, including pulled pork corn dogs, firecracker wontons, and pineapple smoothies served right in a carved fruit shell. Fairgoers are encouraged to download the official Kansas State Fair app for the latest updates, schedules, and vendor locations.

Agriculture remains at the heart of the fair. Schulz emphasized the importance of showcasing Kansas’ farming roots, even as some state fairs around the country move away from that focus. “We want to make sure our agricultural aspects are being promoted here at the Kansas State Fair,” he said.

Beyond the midway and the rides, one of the most heartwarming events takes place Friday with the Championship Livestock Show at Prairie Pavilion, where Special Olympics athletes are paired with FFA and 4-H youth to show animals in the ring. Schulz called it one of the most rewarding parts of the fair: “For someone who has never been around livestock, to be able to walk with an animal and work with it is truly special.”

The Kansas State Fair runs through Sept. 14, featuring daily entertainment, livestock shows, exhibits, and hundreds of vendors. Tickets and event packages are available online at kansasstatefair.com or at the gate.

Kansas State Fair kicks off with ribbon cutting 

Everfull is pleased to announce the launch of new Friendship Meals and Meals on Wheels for the community of Hutchinson.  

Effective September 8, 2025, Everfull will begin to offer a paid version of the Friendship Meals and Meals on Wheels programs it formerly provided. This new service is independent of congregate and home-delivered services provided by the South Central Kansas Area Agency on Aging and Hutchinson Meals on Wheels housed at The Wesley. Neither of Everfull’s Friendship Meals nor Meals on Wheels Hutchinson programs will be reliant on local, state, and/or federal funds. 

Everfull formerly provided Friendship Meals and Meals on Wheels in Hutchinson funded by county, state, and federal programs under the Older Americans Act Title III C1 and C2. Since services provided by Everfull ended on June 27, 2025, Everfull has been approached by community members, former staff, and participants to restart services. 

In response, on September 2, 2025, Everfull put forth a proposal to the City of Hutchinson for consideration to provide emergency funds to allow for a smooth transition from a state and federal funding model to a self-pay model. In that proposal, Everfull requested up to $40,000 to support the program during the initial months of establishing a self-pay model, allowing a per-meal fee of $7.50 to immediately restore services to their prior level. The City of Hutchinson City Council ultimately tabled the consideration of the proposal. 

After hearing of Everfull's presentation at the city council on September 2, 2025, donors have stepped forward and agreed to fill the funding gap to allow resumption of services. The donors have provided a guarantee of up to $40,000 to support Everfull during the start-up of this new program. 

On September 8, 2025, Everfull will relaunch its Friendship Meals and Meals on Wheels programs. Services will initially be based out of Everfull’s Hutchinson location at 401 E 4th Avenue, Suite D in Hutchinson, Kansas 67501. 

Members of the community, regardless of age, who need a location to meet for nutritious meals and powerful connections may contact Everfull to join our Friendship Meals program. Members of the community who need healthy meals but are unable to leave their homes may join the Meals on Wheels program. Both services are available for $7.50. Unlike the former program, which was restricted to those 60 years of age and older, the only requirement for participation in the program is the advance payment of the $7.50 fee. 

Lucy Heller, President of the Board of Directors of Everfull, made the following statement: "Everfull is grateful to our donors who wish to remain anonymous for their support of our program. The donors are residents of the community who know the emergent nature of the problem and understand why Everfull's solution provides the logical next steps to support seniors who are in crisis due to the current situation.

The Kansas State Fair is just around the corner, and with thousands of visitors expected to travel into Hutchinson, several temporary traffic changes will soon take effect around the fairgrounds.

Road Closures &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; •&nbsp;State Fair Road (Main to Plum): Closed September 3–15. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; • Plum Street: Closed Sept. 3–14. On weekdays (Monday–Thursday), the closure runs from 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; on weekends, the road will be fully closed.

Temporary Traffic Lights &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; • Signals are at 20th and Main and 23rd and Main&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;•&nbsp; Lights will be active through Sept. 18.&nbsp;

One-Way Traffic &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; •&nbsp;Poplar Street from Crescent Blvd. to 20th will run northbound only through Sept. 15

During the Fair, State Fair Road falls under the Kansas State Fair’s responsibility for traffic and safety management. Officials are reminding visitors and residents to plan ahead, drive cautiously through surrounding neighborhoods, and remain alert for the increased pedestrian traffic the event brings.

The Kansas State Fair opens Friday, September 6, and runs through Sunday, Sept. 15.
