The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for portions of Kansas as dangerously hot and humid conditions continue across the region.
The warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. CDT Friday for portions of central, east central, south central and southeast Kansas, including Reno, Rice, McPherson, Harvey, Sedgwick and Kingman Counties.
Stafford and Pratt Counties are under a heat advisory through 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Forecasters say heat index values could reach as high as 110 degrees. The combination of high temperatures and humidity could significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for those spending extended periods outdoors.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, remain in air-conditioned locations when possible, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. The National Weather Service also recommends checking on relatives and neighbors who may be particularly vulnerable to extreme heat.
Those who must work or spend time outdoors should take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas and remain alert for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Officials also remind residents to never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, where temperatures can quickly become dangerous or deadly.
The National Weather Service urges residents to stay cool, stay hydrated and stay informed as the period of dangerous heat continues.
