&nbsp;National Work Zone Awareness Week is coming up April 21 to 25. This important safety campaign educates the public of the importance for safety in work zones for both highway workers and the traveling public.

KDOT, KHP, KTA, FHWA and other transportation safety partners work together raise awareness on work zone safety. As part of Kansas' safety campaign, stories from five highway workers who have shared their experiences in year's past will be highlighted here again. These stories highlight what highway workers potentially face every day -&nbsp;close calls or actually being hit while in work zones.&nbsp;

In addition, one story from Shirley McDonald will be featured in the series. Shirley's son, KDOT employee Scotty McDonald, was killed in a work zone crash in 2005. She has spent a lot of time the last 20 years writing blogs, speaking at events and talking to the media on why work zone safety is so important. She knows. Even after 20 years, the loss and grief haven't gone away.&nbsp;

Please remember - these folks have families too, and they want to go home safely every night. Take that extra minute to slow down, ditch all distractions and pay attention.&nbsp;

Ag Minute: Artificial intelligence on the farm 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Aviation enthusiasts, families, and car lovers alike are invited to the Hutchinson Regional Airport Fly-In and Open House on Saturday, May 3rd, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The event is free to the public and promises a day filled with exciting aircraft demonstrations, a classic car show, delicious food, and family-friendly activities.

The day kicks off with a Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser hosted by EAA Chapter 88 from 8:00 AM to 10:30 AM, giving attendees the perfect way to fuel up before a day of aviation fun.

Throughout the event, attendees will have the chance to experience the thrill of aviation up close with featured aircraft, including the B-25 Mitchell "Super Rabbit," P-51 Mustang "Miss America," AC-47 "Spooky" Gunship, and more.

The schedule also includes a weather balloon launch, a Tanker 95 water drop demonstration, and an airplane demo. A highlight of the day is the Young Eagles Program, offering free flights for kids ages 8-17, provided by EAA Chapter 88.

In addition to the aviation activities, a car show presented by Downtown Hutchinson Rod Run will showcase a variety of vehicles, with awards announced at 2:30 PM.

Local food trucks, including Russ and Annies, Shurley Concessions, Giuseppes Jr, Los Mariachis, Stretch’s BBQ, and Anchor Grill, will be on-site, serving up delicious options for attendees.

Adding to the excitement, Country 102.9 and My 93.1 will be broadcasting live from the event, bringing music, interviews, and updates throughout the day.

Hutchinson Regional Airport to host fly-in and open house May 3

CHENEY, Kan. — After more than three decades of dedicated service, Cheney Fire Chief Jerry Peitz is retiring, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, community service and unwavering commitment to public safety.

Peitz joined the Cheney Fire Department in 1993 and has served in various leadership roles throughout his career, including as Assistant Fire Chief under then-Chief Brad Ewy. In 2021, he was appointed Fire Chief, a role in which he has guided and strengthened the department’s operations with integrity and care.

“Jerry’s impact on this department and community is immeasurable,” said a department spokesperson. “He has led with wisdom, empowered our volunteers, and prioritized safety above all else.”

In addition to his fire department service, Peitz is also retiring as the City of Cheney’s Maintenance Supervisor, a position he has held for more than 22 years.

Beyond emergency calls, Peitz was instrumental in community outreach efforts, including fire safety education and public service initiatives. His contributions have helped foster a safer environment for all Cheney residents.

As Peitz steps down, the department welcomes a familiar face into leadership. Assistant Fire Chief Cody Young has been appointed as the new Fire Chief.

Young has served with the Cheney Fire Department for 14 years and brings a wealth of experience to the role. A resident of Cheney for the past 19 years, he also serves as Technical Rescue Captain with the Hutchinson Fire Department, where he has worked for more than a decade.

“Cody has shown exceptional leadership and dedication,” the department said. “We’re confident he’ll continue to uphold the high standards of our department.”

As the community celebrates Peitz’s retirement and honors his service, it also looks ahead to a new chapter under Young’s leadership.

“Jerry, thank you for your incredible service and for being a hometown hero,” the department said. “And congratulations to Chief Young — we look forward to the future of the Cheney Fire Department.”

Cheney Fire Department names new Fire Chief 

DODGE COUNTY, Nebraska —Authorities are investigating a small plane crash in rural northeast Nebraska that killed three people including a man from Kansas.

The plane crashed just after 8p.m. Friday into the Platte River south of Fremont, according to the Dodge County Sheriff's office.&nbsp; &nbsp;The victims have been identified as 43-year-old Daniel Williams of Moundridge, Kansas, 50-year-old Jeff Bittinger and 48-year-old Randy Amrein both of Fremont, Nebraska, according to the sheriff's office.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are in charge of the investigation. Fremont is located approximately 45 minutes northwest of Omaha.

PRATT, Kan. — A weekend of family-friendly fun, music, magic and sports is headed to Pratt, Kansas, from April 25 to 27, with a full slate of events designed to entertain visitors of all ages.

The festivities begin with a comedy and magic show at the historic Barron Theater, where comedic magician Zach Michel will perform April 25 and 26. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students, with presales available at Zach Michel Comedy Magician.

Riders from across the U.S. and abroad will tackle scenic gravel routes, followed by a free community concert featuring the Aaron Traffas Band with Potz and the Meat Sweats. The race and concert will take place at the Municipal Building starting at noon.

Meanwhile, youth baseball and softball tournaments will run throughout the weekend at the Green Sports Complex. Known as a premier location for youth sports in South-Central Kansas, the complex offers convenient access to local hotels and well-stocked concessions. SEDGWICK, Kan.&nbsp; — A Sedgwick woman has been arrested in connection with an attempted aggravated kidnapping that occurred the evening of April 15, authorities said.

According to the Sedgwick Police Department, officers responded to reports that a woman had attempted to forcibly remove a child from a practice field located at 400 W. 4th St. at approximately 6:40 p.m. Witnesses said the woman stated her intent to take the child from the school property. Two supervising adults intervened and were able to separate the woman from the child.

The incident was reported to law enforcement on April 16. Following an investigation and consultation with the Harvey County Attorney’s Office, a 37-year-old Sedgwick resident was taken into custody and formally charged with attempted aggravated kidnapping, a felony.

The suspect is currently being held at the Harvey County Detention Center and is awaiting an initial court appearance.

To protect the privacy of the child and the integrity of the investigation, no further details about the victim have been released.

“We take these incidents extremely seriously, and I want to commend Officer Harmon for his diligent investigation,” said Sedgwick Police Chief Bryan L Hall. “Our priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of every member of this community.”

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information (LMI) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8% in March. This is unchanged from 3.8% in February and an increase from 3.3% in March 2024. The labor force participation rate for Kansas decreased to 67.1% in March.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 900 from February. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 600 over the month, while government increased by 300. The largest job gains in the private sector were in leisure and hospitality (+1,100 jobs) and financial activities (+400 jobs). The largest decrease was in trade, transportation, and utilities (-1,000 jobs).

Since March 2024 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 2,700. This change is due to a decrease of 700 private sector jobs and an increase of 3,400 government jobs.

Here in Reno County, the unemployment rate is 4-percent. This is unchanged from the February Labor Report.&nbsp; According to the March report there are 29.827 people in the Reno County Labor force, with 1,182 people listed as unemployed.&nbsp; The previous month showed 29,984 people in the labor force with 1,225 people unemployed.&nbsp;

Founded in 1979 by Joe Hedrick, the business began as a modest operation focused on specialty rodeo acts. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — April 18, 2025 — A lack of significant rainfall across Kansas wheat country for nearly five months is putting intense pressure on crops, prompting concern from farmers and agricultural officials alike.

According to the Kansas Wheat Commission, only 43% of the state’s wheat crop is now rated in good to excellent condition, down from 48% earlier this week and 51% last week. Producers are warning that without immediate relief in the form of measurable rainfall, the situation is likely to deteriorate further.

“Right now, we’re just evaporating everything we get,” said John Jenkinson, an Ag Lending Banker and farmer from western Kansas. “We had 90-plus degrees and wind gusts over 50 miles per hour yesterday. It doesn’t take long for that to take whatever moisture we have and send it back into the atmosphere.”

Farmers say they need around one to two inches of rain every two weeks to maintain the crop, but that hasn’t happened since late fall. While parts of southern Kansas near the Oklahoma border saw up to four-tenths of an inch during storms earlier this month, most of the state remains moisture-deficient.

“We’re in a deficit,” Jenkinson added. “Wheat that looked hopeful a few weeks ago is starting to decline. If we don’t get rain soon, we’re going to lose ground fast.”

Beyond wheat, other crops like dryland alfalfa are also suffering. A producer near Great Bend told Jenkinson that last week’s light showers weren’t enough to sustain his fields for long.

He told Jenkinson, “We got a little rain, but it’s already gone, my alfalfa’s in trouble.”

The dry conditions come at a critical time as farmers begin planting corn and prepare for soybeans. While irrigated fields in counties like Greeley are seeing corn go into the ground, dryland fields remain too parched to support planting.

“Earlier in the year, we had a decent soil profile from last fall’s rains,” Jenkinson explained. “But we’ve dried out the top layer so much, we can’t access that moisture anymore. We need rainfall now to make the soil meet that reserve.”

The drought is also impacting livestock producers, as pastures fail to produce enough forage amid soaring cattle prices. Many are being forced to pull cattle off wheat fields early in search of better grazing conditions.

Weather forecasts suggest a potential for rain over the weekend and into early next week, along with a slight cooling trend. Farmers are hopeful, but cautious.

“It’ll help some,” Jenkinson said. “But we’re going to need more than a sprinkle. We need a soaking rain to give this crop — and our livelihoods — a fighting chance.”

Prolonged drought stresses Kansas wheat crop as farmers hope for rain 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (April 18, 2025) — The Kansas Department for Children and Families will host a community event Friday in Hutchinson to raise awareness for Child Abuse Prevention Month and offer vital resources for families in need.

The event, scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the DCF office on East 11th Avenue near the Uptown Hutch mall, will feature free lunch, carnival-style games for children, and booths from community partners offering information and support services.

“This event is about coming together to support families and help ensure every child has the chance to grow up safe, healthy and supported,” said Mackenzie Nicks, a representative with DCF. “It’s also a chance to learn what resources are available, not just for parents, but for anyone who wants to make a difference.”

DCF has partnered with the Kansas Children’s Service League to provide information on child protection services, adult protection services, food and cash assistance, child care subsidies, and vocational rehabilitation for individuals with disabilities.

Nicks emphasized that increased family support can reduce stressors that sometimes lead to child abuse, particularly during challenging economic times.

“We know that when families are connected with the right resources, they’re better equipped to handle the pressures of parenting,” she said. “Rising costs for groceries, gas and other essentials are putting a lot of stress on households.”

Attendees are encouraged to wear blue, the official color of Child Abuse Prevention Month, and pinwheels — the symbol of the cause — will be handed out at the event. Representatives from organizations such as United Way will also be present.

For those unable to attend, DCF encourages residents to show support by planting pinwheel gardens or simply learning more about ways to help families in their communities.

A 24/7 support line, 1-800-CHILDREN, is also available for parents and caregivers statewide seeking help, resources or someone to talk to.

“When we invest in children and families, we’re investing in the future of Hutchinson and the state of Kansas,” Nicks said.

 There are a couple of bills that would allow whole and 2% milk to be served again in schools.  Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. has called the federal dietary guidelines antiquated and wants to see full fat whole milk to be used in Head Start programs.&nbsp;

Ag Minute: Whole milk in schools 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council voted Tuesday to set a public hearing for May 6 to consider the advisability of creating a new Community Improvement District (CID) for Phase Two of redevelopment efforts at the Uptown Hutch mall.

RockStep Hutchinson, LLC, the mall’s owner, has petitioned the city to replace the current 1-percent CID sales tax with a 2-percent rate to support further revitalization of the property. The requested resolution does not approve the CID itself but rather sets the stage for a formal public hearing where the proposal will be discussed in full.

Tommy Stewart, a representative of RockStep Hutchinson LLC, was present at the meeting, and Marc Abbott, legal counsel for the developer, joined via Zoom.

“The resolution we’re asking you to approve tonight is simply to set the public hearing for May 6 at 5:30 p.m. during the council meeting,” city finance director Angela Richard explained. “At that time, the public can provide input, and the developer will present more details, including the proposed development agreement.”

The proposed project aims to attract additional tenants to the aging mall, with key redevelopment activities expected to be completed by 2027. Once benchmarks outlined in the development agreement are met, the city would work with the state to implement the 2-percent CID and retire the existing 1-percent CID.

As part of the agreement, RockStep Hutchinson LLC has also committed to maintaining the mall's parking lots and private roads, a request made by city officials. The developer has already provided funding to cover legal and publication costs associated with the CID process.

During the meeting, questions were raised about the effectiveness of the current CID and the state of the mall property.

“How long has this 1-percent been on, and how much money are we sitting on right now before we go and invest another 1-percent on top of it?” asked Mike Warren, a Reno County resident. “There’s nothing being done out there in that mall area at all.”

City officials responded that questions regarding the financial status of the existing CID and future plans would be better addressed at the public hearing. They also clarified that CID funds are collected by the city and distributed to the developer only for reimbursable expenses that align with the approved development plan. The city retains a 5-percent administrative fee.

Marc Abbott emphasized that a comprehensive presentation will be made at the public hearing, including specific project components, total cost, and the portion eligible for CID reimbursement.

Council members noted that the purpose of Tuesday’s vote was only to schedule the public hearing, not to approve the CID itself.

“I believe it’s always a good idea to set a hearing date,” Mayor Stacy Goss said. “There’s a lot of frustration and it's not with this CID, it's the one next door and that's something council has been talking about with staff."&nbsp;

Council members also requested that staff provide a basic primer on how CIDs work at the upcoming meeting, along with a map to help inform the public.

The public hearing will take place at the Hutchinson City Council meeting on Monday, May 6, at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.

Council sets public hearing to consider expanded CID for Uptown Hutch Mall 

RENO COUNTY, Kan. — Two Reno County first responders were recognized for their bravery and quick action during a life-threatening emergency last summer, receiving Life Saving Awards at a valor banquet held Wednesday night.

Deputy Jake Harrison of the Reno County Sheriff’s Office and District 9 Firefighter Corey Neal were honored for their heroic response to a call on the morning of June 26, 2024, involving a 73-year-old woman trapped beneath a 700-pound riding mower in southern Reno County.

According to authorities, the woman had been working beneath the mower when a jack supporting the machine failed, causing it to collapse across her midsection. She was struggling to breathe when Deputy Harrison, who had self-dispatched to the scene, arrived. Neal, who responded in his personal vehicle, arrived moments later.

With the woman barely responsive and time critical, the two men acted without hesitation. Working together, they lifted the mower off the woman, allowing her to be pulled free. They began administering first aid until fire and EMS crews arrived approximately six minutes later.

Officials say the woman would likely have gone into respiratory and cardiac arrest if Harrison and Neal had not intervened when they did.

“These men are real heroes who walk among us every day,” a sheriff’s office spokesperson said. “Their courage and decisive action made all the difference. Congratulations and thank you for a job well done.”

The Life Saving Awards were presented as part of a ceremony recognizing exceptional valor among local first responders.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Ham is a staple for many families’ Easter feast, but between all the varieties available, consumers are often confused on how to safely prepare this holiday favorite.

Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee said hams come in two categories: cooked/ready-to-eat, or uncooked.

“Package labels will state if it is uncooked or ready-to eat,” said Blakeslee, who also is coordinator&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/">of K-State’s Rapid Response Center for Food Science</a>. “Always read the package label and instructions to be informed on how to safely handle the ham.”

Varieties of cooked ham include canned, vacuum packaged and spiral-cut cooked ham.

“Ready-to-eat ham may be called cooked,” Blakeslee said. “Ham that is not ready-to-eat but has the appearance of ready-to-eat products will bear a statement on the label indicating the product needs cooking.”

All cooked ham can be eaten cold, straight out of the package. If preferred hot, Blakeslee said ham should be heated to an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit in an oven set at a minimum temperature of 325 F. If the ham has been repackaged in a location outside the processing plant -- such as inside the grocery store deli -- heat to an internal temperature of 165 F. Reheat any leftover cooked ham to 165 F.

Blakeslee said the best way to check the internal temperature is to use a food thermometer.

Varieties of uncooked hams can include fresh, cured and smoked – with or without the bone. Blakeslee suggests reading the label and instructions on the package. Some may look like they are ready-to-eat, but they are not and must be cooked thoroughly before eating, she said.

The package should contain directions on how to cook the ham, but for additional guidance, the USDA offers an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fsis.usda.gov/food-safety/safe-food-handling-and-preparation/meat-fish/hams-and-food-safety">online timetable for cooking ham</a>. There is a minimum cooking temperature for all uncooked hams.

“Ham that requires cooking before consumption must reach an internal temperature of 145 F (with a three-minute rest time),” said Blakeslee. “Set the oven no lower than 325 F.”

This Saturday, April 19th, the Thomadora 4-H Club is back at it again with their annual community service project, a food drive to support the Reno County Food Bank. 

Club members will be collecting donations outside the 30th Street Dillons Marketplace from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., working in two-hour shifts.

Last year, we gathered an impressive 2,799 pounds of food and raised nearly $900. Stop by to support a great cause and help make this year’s drive an even bigger success!
