WICHITA, Kan. — Terminal renovations are set to begin today at Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport as officials work to improve efficiency and prepare the facility for future growth.

The project will focus on reconfiguring the airport’s ticketing counters, with airport officials emphasizing that every effort will be made to minimize impacts to passengers during construction.

“This renovation allows us to better utilize our existing ticketing space while also preparing for future growth,” said Rachel Mayberry, Air Service and Marketing Manager. “Although we are working to limit any disruption, we continue to encourage passengers to arrive at the airport with enough time to feel comfortable before their flight.”

Funding for the renovation comes from a combination of recently announced state program funds, along with federal and local matching dollars. Airport officials say the primary objective is to maximize the use of existing space while creating additional capacity to support long-term passenger demand.

Most construction activity will take place during evening hours and behind the scenes, focusing largely on infrastructure and technology upgrades. Some passenger-facing improvements are also planned, including modifications and extensions to the ticketing counters, along with security enhancements to the exit lane.

Construction is expected to continue throughout the year and be completed by the end of 2026.

HutchCC to welcome students back to campus 

After more than six months away, McPherson High School athletics are returning home.

The Bullpups will officially be back in the Roundhouse on Tuesday, hosting Augusta in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. The return comes after a 203-day absence caused by extensive repairs to the gym floor, which forced teams to spend the fall and first half of the winter seasons without access to their home facility.

School officials expressed appreciation for the flexibility and cooperation shown by students, staff, athletes, and coaches throughout the extended disruption. During the renovation period, McPherson High School teams competed and hosted events at a variety of alternate locations.

Tuesday’s games mark a long-awaited homecoming for Bullpup athletics, with the reopening of the Roundhouse signaling a return to normalcy for McPherson High School sports programs and fans alike.

On September 30th, 2025, the Hutchinson Police Department received a call from an unknown individual regarding a threat directed at Hutchinson High School. Given the seriousness of the situation, immediate action was taken to ensure the safety of students and staff. Hutchinson High School, Graber Elementary, located at 1600 North Cleveland Street, and Transitional Learning Center, 700 East 13th Ave, were placed under lockdown.

During the investigation, a suspect was identified and interviewed. Kayleb Lozoya, 17-year-old male of Hutchinson, was taken into custody and transported to Reno County Juvenile Detention Center for three counts of aggravated criminal threat, interference with law enforcement (making a false report), interference with law enforcement (concealing / destroying evidence), unlawful request for emergency services, and criminal false communication.

HRMC announces first baby of new year 

The American Red Cross will host two community blood drives in Reno County over the next two weeks as winter weather continues to impact blood donations and supplies, particularly for type O blood.

The first blood drive is scheduled for Friday, January 9, at Crossroads Christian Church, located at 4310 N. Monroe in Hutchinson. Donations will be accepted from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

A second drive will take place on Friday, January 16, at Buhler Mennonite Brethren Church, 415 North West in Buhler, also from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The Red Cross says winter storms and severe weather have caused a seasonal decline in blood donations, creating an emergency need for type O blood, which is the most frequently used blood type in hospitals and can be critical in trauma situations. Officials warn that additional severe weather could further limit donor turnout, increasing the risk of shortages.

In addition to helping meet urgent patient needs, donors who give blood between January 1 and January 25 will be entered for a chance to win a trip for two to Super Bowl LX in California. Carla Stanfield, Director of Marketing and Communications for the United Way of Reno County, said the campaign is firmly in the “home stretch.” As of the most recent report, the organization had raised approximately $1.16 million, leaving about $200,000 to reach its target with less than a month remaining.

“Our goal is to raise $1.35 million this season to support the efforts of more than 20 organizations in our community,” Stanfield said. “We’re close, but it’s going to take every moment of January to get us over the finish line.”

Stanfield noted that campaigns often come down to the final days, despite strong community support. Having overseen four campaign seasons, she said it is typically late January before the outcome becomes clear. Still, she remains confident in the generosity of Reno County donors.

United Way’s long-standing message, “one gift, many lives changed,” reflects how donations are distributed. Rather than supporting a single cause, contributions are pooled and allocated across approximately 22 partner organizations and 38 programs serving an estimated 20,000 individuals each year. All funds raised locally remain in Reno County.

Stanfield emphasized that United Way’s funding decisions follow a rigorous, community-driven process. Each spring, a panel of local volunteers participates in a full-day allocations review. Funded organizations submit applications detailing their programs, budgets, and outcomes, then appear in person to present and answer questions. After reviewing the information, the panel determines how funds will be distributed.

“That vetting process gives donors confidence that their dollars are being spent as wisely as possible,” Stanfield said. “It’s not just about meeting immediate crisis needs, but also supporting long-term solutions.”

United Way organizes its work into four focus areas: youth opportunity, healthy community, community resiliency, and financial security. Youth opportunity includes programs such as Boys &amp; Girls Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Rise Up Reno, and childcare scholarships. Healthy community funding supports physical and mental health initiatives, including YMCA programs and Hospice and Home Care of Reno County.

Community resiliency covers crisis and disaster response, such as rent and utility assistance through The Salvation Army and volunteer disaster recovery efforts. Financial security includes programs like Interfaith Housing’s Individual Development Accounts for homeownership, Circles Reno County, and Kansas Legal Services.

While specific funding targets vary by category, Stanfield said allocations are guided by both organizational requests and available resources. “We’re not always able to meet every request exactly, but most of the time we can get very close,” she said.

Accountability remains a priority for United Way. Partner organizations are required to submit annual reports detailing how funds are used and who is being served. Beginning in late 2025, United Way also implemented quarterly reporting to provide more detailed, timely data.

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;The State of Kansas ends December 2025 with total tax collections at $1.07 billion. That is $58.7 million, or 5.2%, below the estimate. Total tax collections were down 4.8% from December 2024. &nbsp;&nbsp;

“The new year begins with missing the December tax collection estimate by nearly $59 million. Individual income tax collections were reported down $37 million while corporate income tax continues to be significantly below 2024 levels, coming in nearly $22 million below estimate,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“These numbers underscore that while recent tax returns have been positive, there is no guarantee these trends continue. We must maintain the fiscally responsible, disciplined approach to the budget I have advocated for during my seven years as governor.”&nbsp;

Individual income tax collections were $448.0 million. That is $37.0 million, or 7.6%, below the estimate. Individual income tax collections were down 0.8% from December 2024. Corporate income tax collections were $223.1 million. That is $21.9 million, or 8.9%, below the estimate, and down 19.0% from December 2024.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

What began as campfire stories from a rugged hiking trip has grown into a published book — and a shared creative journey between a father and his son.

Dr. John Walker, superintendent of Central Christian School, recently co-authored a short novel with his son, Colin Walker, inspired by real-life backpacking experiences in Arkansas. Their book, Campgrounds: The Ouachita Mountains, is now available for purchase on Amazon.

Dr. Walker said the idea for the book grew out of years of backpacking trips with a close friend across multiple states, including a memorable hike along the Eagle Rock Loop in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas. During one winter trip, the pair heard something circling their campsite late at night — a moment made more unsettling by earlier warnings of a mountain lion in the area.

While the hikers were never harmed, the experience stuck with Walker and eventually became the foundation for the novel.

“One of the joys for me as a dad is coming home and sharing those stories with my sons,” Walker said. “Colin heard that story and thought, ‘I think we can make this even better.’”

Colin said the idea to turn the story into a book came naturally after hearing his dad recount the adventure.

“One night he told us the story, and I said, ‘Dad, can we write a book?’” Colin said. “Now it’s turned into a whole series.”

The novel follows two brothers, John and Joe, on a hiking trip that quickly becomes a fight for survival. The characters’ names were intentionally chosen — Joe is Dr. Walker’s brother — adding another personal layer to the story.

Colin said one of his favorite scenes involved imagining the main character running for help while tracking his pace and heart rate on a watch, while the most difficult part was simply finishing the book.

“Starting it is fun,” Colin said. “Finishing it took a lot of long days.”

Dr. Walker said their writing process was collaborative and deliberate. Colin often generated ideas or wrote portions of the story, while his father helped refine the language and structure. At times, they stepped away from the project for months due to busy schedules and writer’s block, before returning to complete it.

“We really tried to blend childlike imagination with more mature language,” Walker said. “It was truly a team effort, but it was Colin’s persistence that pushed us to the finish line.”

The pair also navigated creative disagreements along the way, which both described as productive rather than frustrating.

“We sharpened each other,” Dr. Walker said. “Colin’s fingerprint is throughout the entire book.”

Beyond storytelling, both said the project reinforced lessons about teamwork, perseverance, and endurance. Colin referenced Romans 5:3-5, noting how endurance leads to character and hope — a theme his father echoed while describing the challenges of self-publishing.

The book was published through Kindle Direct Publishing, an Amazon self-publishing platform, a process that required learning formatting and layout requirements.

From the initial idea to publication, the project took roughly a year, including three to four months where they stepped away from the project.

“We wouldn’t be here without Colin pushing me,” Dr. Walker said.

The Walkers have already begun working on a second book, inspired by Dr. Walker’s more recent hike in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming.

Father and son turn backpacking adventure into published novel

A public science lecture scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 15, at 6 p.m. will offer an in-depth look at how water travels across the landscape and ultimately flows into Cheney Reservoir.

The lecture will explore the relationship between soil infiltration, surface runoff, and water quality, explaining how these interconnected processes influence the overall health of the reservoir. Attendees will learn how rainfall moves through soil, across agricultural and developed land, and into streams that feed the reservoir — and how those pathways affect sediment, nutrients, and other pollutants entering the water supply.

Presenters will also discuss how land use and conservation practices shape water quality over time. Topics will include the role of agriculture, urban development, and soil management, as well as conservation strategies designed to reduce runoff, improve infiltration, and protect long-term water resources.

The presentation will be led by Chloe Gehring and Howard Miller of the Cheney Lake Watershed.

The deadline to register for this presentation is Tuesday, Jan. 13.&nbsp;

Dear Dave, Our daughter is 30, and she used to live a completely irresponsible lifestyle. This irresponsible behavior extended into the way she handled her finances, too. While she was in college, she took on $20,000 in student loan debt against our advice. About a year ago, she was in a bad car accident. She has recovered, but the experience really changed her. Her outlook on life, her finances and spiritual matters, in particular, are so much more mature. We were thinking about paying off the remainder of her student loans, just as a way to help and celebrate her big turnaround. What do you think?

Dear Richard, Sometimes the best gift you can give a person is to let them wallow around for a while in the mess they made. Being forced to work your way out of bad decisions and irresponsible behaviors is a great remedy in lots of cases.

But in this situation, coupled with the fact that she’s now being more responsible with money, behaving like an adult and making better life choices, I’d want her to be as free as possible as she enters this new phase of her life. So, if I were in your shoes, and I had the means to pay off her student loan debt without putting myself at risk financially, that’s exactly what I’d do.  

Right now, I hope you two will take every opportunity you have to be a blessing to your daughter. She’s a lot like the Prodigal Son at this point. She has experienced some bad things, come around in her thinking and she realizes now what’s right and what really matters.

I hope both of you will give her the biggest hugs she has ever had, and tell her you love her and that you’re proud of her. Then, throw a big party and write a check to knock out the rest of that student loan debt!

This week marks the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026. There is no denying that 2025 has been a year we will never forget. Some of us would like to forget 2025 and others have had a good year. Yes, I am talking about the difference between those of us who raise crops and those of us who have cattle. It has been a year of extremes.

However, whether you liked it or hated it, 2025 is in the rearview mirror and 2026 is dead ahead. What will 2026 bring us? Who knows? It is an election year These elections have a lot riding on the line, and your involvement is critical for agriculture.

If you are a member of Voters Organized to Elect Farm Bureau Friends (VOTE FBF), thank you and now is the time to start researching the candidates in your area so you can have an informed opinion about which candidate could help agriculture the most. If you have not yet contributed to VOTE FBF, I would encourage you to do so right now and you can make your voice heard when the County Evaluation Committee or CEC meets and chooses candidates to support.

Every member’s opinion is important when the VOTE FBF board makes its selections both for the primary and for the general election. We know that increasingly farmers and ranchers are becoming a smaller and smaller portion of the population, so it is important that we band together to have a louder voice.

Agriculture is the largest industry in Kansas, and it is critical that we elect officials who understand agriculture and the importance of what we do. We need officials who are at least receptive to hear the message Kansas Farm Bureau brings to the Capitol, both in Topeka and Washington D.C.

That all starts with you being involved with the individuals we send to represent us. We must get to know them before they are elected, and it is just as important that they know who the members of Kansas Farm Bureau are too.
