Youth football meets community impact as the Hutchinson YMCA and the Cosmosphere team up for the first-ever Cosmo Bowl, set for Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025, at Buhler High School.

The event promises an evening of excitement, featuring 4th, 5th, and 6th grade athletes from the Buhler and Wyandotte County youth leagues in a pair of bowl-style football matchups. Festivities begin with a family tailgate at 3 p.m., gates open at 6 p.m., and kickoff for the first game begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are just $5 per person, with kids 5 and under free. Event T-shirts will also be available for $15, with preorder and same-day options.

But the Cosmo Bowl is about more than just football — it’s about building a foundation for Reno County’s future. Proceeds from the event will support the creation of a STEM-focused childcare center, a collaborative project between the YMCA, Cosmosphere, Horizons Mental Health Center, and the Hutchinson Regional Medical Foundation. The center will provide 130 childcare slots, including 100 for working families and 30 for at-risk children, promoting early childhood learning and creativity through science, technology, engineering, and math.

“We are excited to share our passion of youth sports and keeping the kids of Reno County healthy and active,” said David Foster, Branch Director of the Hutchinson YMCA. “It’s exciting to see families come together, support our kids, and invest in opportunities that empower them to learn, create, and grow.”

Benjamin Anderson, President &amp; CEO of Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, echoed that sentiment, saying, “By attending the Cosmo Bowl, our community isn’t just cheering on our young athletes — we’re investing in a brighter future for Reno County children through hands-on STEM learning and early childhood development.”

October is generally jam-packed for my family, and this year is no exception. Attending my son’s football games, finishing up our calving season, celebrating birthdays, continuing fall harvest and preparing to sow wheat have taken up the majority of my family’s attention and effort this month. 

My mother-in-law, the kids and I added to our October schedule by recently participating in a market of farms pop-up event organized by Shop Kansas Farms and Kansas Farm Bureau. Producers from across Kansas brought their products to the pop-up market to increase visibility, connect with customers and ultimately sell their goods.

My family, minus my father-in-law and husband who stayed home to keep harvesting, took our popcorn and popcorn popper to the event and had a fantastic day of handing out samples, having great conversations and sending customers home with our product. 

A number of people I visited with at the market have since connected with me through social media or email.

Many of these messages have centered around October being Farm to School Month and how many Kansas schools participate with other states within the region in an annual Crunch Off competition. 

The goal of the October Crunch Off is to see how many students, staff and community members can crunch an ag product from their state as a way to highlight locally grown items.

Since many schools have their own popcorn poppers, and popcorn makes a great crunchable snack, we’ve sent bags of our Kansas-grown popcorn to schools all across our state for these events.

While there’s still plenty of October remaining, it’s been quite rewarding to connect with schools, see pictures from their social media of their students crunching our popcorn and even discussing opportunities to incorporate our little popping crop in their school concessions or cafeterias to use well beyond Farm to School Month.

As Kansas farmers, we know the wheat, sorghum, corn and soybeans we harvest annually on our farm help feed and fuel the world — even though we don’t know exactly who uses the grain once we deliver to the elevator. Our popcorn crop, on the other hand, has allowed us a personalized window into the lives, homes and communities of those we are helping feed. It’s allowed us the opportunity to connect with consumers, to share our story and to serve as a resource. 

It’s become increasingly clear to me that more and more people want to know about their food and the people who grow it. Events like the pop-up market and school Crunch Offs are examples of ways to create connections between family farms and consumers while highlighting the great products being produced within our state.

Reno County’s school districts are feeling the effects of a steady, two-decade decline in the local youth population — a trend that mirrors demographic shifts across Kansas and much of rural America.

According to data from the Kansas Department of Education, five of the six public school districts in Reno County have seen enrollment losses since 2005. Hutchinson USD 308 dropped from 4,607 students in 2005 to 4,032 in 2024, a 12.5% decline. Nickerson-South Hutchinson USD 309 fell nearly 10%, while Fairfield USD 310 saw a 32% reduction. Haven USD 312 declined 28%, and Pretty Prairie USD 311 dipped 4.2%.

The lone district to buck the trend is Buhler USD 313, which increased enrollment by nearly 12%, growing from 2,148 students in 2005 to 2,404 in 2024.

Broader demographic data from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) helps explain the pattern. Reno County’s population of school-age youth has fallen consistently over the past two decades. In 2000, the county counted 13,616 residents between the ages of 5 and 19. By 2023, that number had dropped to 11,827 — a decrease of roughly 13%.

The decline is visible across every age group. Children ages 5–9 fell from 4,144 in 2000 to 3,545 in 2023. Those aged 10–14 dropped from 4,558 to 3,978, and the 15–19 age group declined from 4,914 to 4,304.

While there were short-lived rebounds around 2005 to 2010, overall numbers have trended downward since 2010, when the youth population last peaked at 12,930.

Local educators and community planners say the data confirms what they’ve long observed: smaller kindergarten classes, shrinking high school cohorts, and growing pressure on school funding.

“This is part of a larger demographic shift,” one local planner said. “Younger families are smaller, and many young adults leave for college or work elsewhere before returning — if they return at all.”

Officials warn that unless birth rates increase or new families move into the area, the county’s school-aged population will likely continue to decline. The trend, they say, underscores the need for community investments that attract and retain young families — such as affordable housing, quality jobs, and family-friendly amenities.

Though the yearly changes appear gradual, the long-term impact is profound, shaping not only the future of local schools but also the region’s workforce, recreation programs, and overall economic vitality.

Since then, her business has grown tremendously. She expanded in 1997, and most recently in 2021 when she acquired the practice of Dr. James Gertken at 30th and Lorraine.&nbsp;

Dr. Evans has always been committed to learning and innovation. She was one of the first in the area to offer digital scanning for impressions, same-day crowns and Invisalign. Her current passions are Bioclear— a modern treatment that protects, conserves, rejuvenates, and restores teeth without traditional crowns and Dental Sleep Dentistry. She also offers a unique pediatric program that focuses on healthy jaw and airway development for children.

Her team of nine employees receives ongoing training and development, and together they create a supportive, family-like culture. Sage Brush Dental Health also believes strongly in paying it forward. Dr. Evans has held leadership roles in the Kansas Mission of Mercy, helping provide free dental care to thousands, and she and her team support organizations such as Eagle University which gives high school and college students get a 7-year career head start, United Way, the Cancer Council of Reno County, and Reins of Hope.

HUTCHINSON — A tragic case that shocked the community earlier this year reached a major turning point Friday when 37-year-old Wendell Payton pleaded guilty to multiple felony charges in connection with the February deaths of his wife and young daughter.

According to the Hutchinson Police Department, officers were dispatched to 1014 East 3rd Avenue in the early morning hours of February 1, 2025, after neighbors reported hearing screams and seeing smoke coming from the home. When officers arrived, they found a young girl outside the residence and observed an active fire. Firefighters from the Hutchinson Fire Department quickly responded and extinguished the blaze.

Once the fire was under control, investigators discovered three people inside the home. Two of them—a four-year-old girl and an adult female identified as Kalsey Payton—were pronounced dead at the scene. Autopsies determined that the child died from blunt force trauma, while Kalsey Payton died from sharp force injuries. Both deaths were ruled homicides.

The third person in the home, Wendell Payton, was found alive with self-inflicted wounds from which he later recovered. Following an extensive investigation involving the Hutchinson Police Department, Hutchinson Fire Department, Reno County EMS, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office, and Sedgwick County Fire Department, the Reno County District Attorney’s Office filed multiple charges against him in case number 25 CR 89.

On October 17, 2025, Payton pleaded guilty to two counts of intentional, premeditated first-degree murder, aggravated arson, aggravated endangering of a child, two counts of interference with law enforcement officers, and domestic battery against Kalsey Payton. Judge Daniel Gilligan accepted the pleas and found Payton guilty as charged.

Sentencing is set for December 15, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. in Reno County District Court.

In a statement, the Reno County District Attorney’s Office extended its deepest condolences to the victims’ families and expressed gratitude to all the agencies involved “for ensuring justice was done for the victims.”

Hutch man pleads guilty in Feb. double homicide, arson case 

Southwest Bricktown is gearing up for a full day of culture, community, and celebration as the neighborhood hosts its Fifth Annual Southwest Bricktown Fiesta today, at Southwest Bricktown Park on First Street between Madison and Jefferson.

The event, presented by Midwest Superstore, kicks off at 3 p.m. with live boxing exhibitions organized by the Reno County Boxing Academy. Fiesta activities, including food vendors, music, kids’ entertainment, and a cultural bazaar, begin at 5 p.m., with streets around the park closing at 9 a.m. for setup.

“We started the Fiesta to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month and bring the community together,” said Adam Pina, a member of the Southwest Bricktown Association, which organizes the event. “It’s grown every year — we’ve got more food trucks, new activities, and great entertainment for the whole family.”

This year’s Fiesta will feature a food truck lineup highlighting a variety of cuisines, with a strong focus on authentic Mexican fare. A new addition for 2025 is the arts-and-crafts bazaar, designed to showcase local artisans and vendors. “It’s something that’s a big part of Hispanic culture,” Pina explained. “We wanted to bring that marketplace experience to Hutchinson.”

The evening’s entertainment lineup includes DJ 620 in the Mix, familiar to many from Third Thursday events, and a live performance from Circuito Norteño, also known as Eclipse, performing traditional Hispanic music.

Children can enjoy a dedicated kids’ zone with inflatables, while adults can relax in a beer garden and enjoy the music and festivities. The boxing event, which requires a separate $10 admission, supports the Reno County Boxing Academy’s youth programs and travel expenses.

The Fiesta is more than just a party, Pina emphasized — it’s part of a broader effort by the Southwest Bricktown Association, one of several neighborhood groups formed under the Healthy Neighborhood Initiative. The association works to represent residents’ voices, promote pride, and tackle local improvement projects.

“We’re not just about throwing an event once a year,” Pina said. “We’re here to support our neighbors — whether it’s helping with tree removal, home repairs, or connecting residents with city services.”

The association meets monthly, alternating between the Hutch Rec offices and Avenue A School, and welcomes new members from across the community. Those interested can find more information on Facebook at Southwest Bricktown or by contacting Hutch Rec.

Pina said proceeds from the Fiesta help fund the association’s activities and could soon support a future scholarship program for local students.

Southwest Bricktown Fiesta returns Saturday for fifth annual celebration

&nbsp;A 21-year-old Pratt man pleaded guilty this week and is expected to get probation in the violent attack of a Hays woman in August 2024.

Tucker Eisenhauer pleaded guilty in Ellis County District Court to aggravated battery, and as a result of the guilty plea, he had four other charges dropped.

According to court documents, on Aug. 25, 2024, Eisenhauer allegedly sexually assaulted the victim by holding her against her will. He was also charged with kidnapping for allegedly locking the victim in his pickup, aggravated battery for allegedly violently shaking her, causing her neck to pop, and criminal deprivation of property by allegedly taking the victim’s keys and phone during the altercation.

Eisenhauer does not have a criminal record, so under Kansas sentencing guidelines, the sentence would be presumptive probation with an underlying prison sentence if he violates his probation.

Court documents show both the state and defense will ask for eight months of jail time, but 12 months of probation.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fox Theatre is getting an energy-efficient upgrade thanks to a hometown partnership with Superior Boiler.

The Hutchinson-based manufacturer has donated a new Arrowhead firebox boiler and blowdown separator to replace the theatre’s 33-year-old Osage unit, also built by Superior Boiler. The installation ensures the continued comfort and operation of one of Hutchinson’s most iconic landmarks.

“We are honored to support the Hutchinson Fox Theatre with this boiler donation,” said Doug Wright, president and CEO of Superior Boiler. “The Fox Theatre is a cultural staple in our community, and we’re proud that our equipment has played a role in maintaining a comfortable environment for its visitors over the years. With this new boiler, the theatre will experience many more years of dependable service.”

The new Arrowhead model offers the same capacity and low-pressure steam design as the previous unit but in a smaller, more efficient package. It fits through a standard 36-inch doorway for easier installation and provides enhanced energy efficiency, translating to long-term savings for the theatre.

Superior Boiler’s contribution also includes a matching blowdown separator, which safely cools and depressurizes boiler water before disposal — a feature now required under updated local regulations. The separator improves both safety and equipment lifespan by removing impurities from the system.

This isn’t the first time Superior Boiler has stepped up to help the Fox. The company’s original Osage boiler was donated in the early 1990s as part of the venue’s decade-long restoration campaign — a gift that helped rally additional community support for the project.

“We are incredibly grateful for this generous donation from Superior Boiler,” said Josh Davies, executive and technical director at the Fox Theatre. “Their support ensures that we can continue to provide an exceptional experience for our guests while preserving the legacy of this beautiful venue.”

Opened in 1931, the Fox Theatre remains a centerpiece for arts and entertainment in downtown Hutchinson, welcoming about 40,000 patrons each year for concerts, films, and community events. The “State Movie Palace of Kansas,” listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places, continues to rely on steam heat as it has since its debut.

Health department looking for new advisory board members

The Hutchinson Art Center is gearing up for one of its biggest events of the year — the annual Autumn Consignment Art Auction — taking place Saturday, Oct. 18. Doors open at 9 a.m. for registration, and bidding begins at 11 a.m.&nbsp;

Executive Director Emily Kohls and board member Barbara Withrow said the auction will feature 127 works of art, including pieces by well-known local and regional artists such as Jack Stout, Mike Livingston, Mace John, Carolyn Dillon and Pat Potucek.&nbsp;

“This year’s auction has one of the most outstanding selections we’ve ever had,” Withrow said. “We’ve had a lot of interest in local favorites like Stout and Dillon, but we’re also showcasing regional, national, and even international artists.”&nbsp;

Kohls noted that the 2025 auction features an exceptional range of three-dimensional art pieces. “We’ve got more 3D artwork this year than I’ve ever seen — ceramics, glass, and sculpture. It’s truly a beautiful variety,” she said.&nbsp;

Among the standout items are a Navajo rug with vivid red hues, a two-foot-tall Kachina doll, and glass and ceramic works from artists such as Rick Garnett and Carolyn Dillon. The auction also includes rare signed prints, including one by famed Southwestern artist Ted DeGrazia, along with pottery, jewelry, and other collectibles.&nbsp;

BUHLER, Kan. — After more than three decades of leadership, Sunshine Meadows Retirement Community CEO Keith Pankratz will retire on Dec. 19, 2025, marking the end of a 36-year career that helped transform the Buhler-based facility into one of Kansas’ leading senior care providers.

Pankratz guided Sunshine Meadows’ evolution from a small nursing home into a full Continuum of Care Retirement Community, while also serving as a driving force for senior care advancement locally and statewide. He played key roles on the city’s economic development committee, helped found the Progressive Healthcare Alliance, and was active in multiple senior living boards and the Buhler Kiwanis Club.

The Sunshine Meadows Board of Directors announced that Nathan Spencer, who has served as executive director and administrator, will officially succeed Pankratz. Spencer, a longtime SMRC employee, began his career there in 2011 after working for the City of Buhler’s maintenance department. Under Pankratz’s mentorship, he rose through several leadership roles before earning his administrator license in 2022 and stepping into the administrator position in January 2023.

“Keith’s leadership has shaped not only this organization, but also my own journey,” Spencer said. “I look forward to continuing the mission of providing compassionate, Christ-centered care and ensuring Sunshine Meadows remains a place where residents feel at home.”

To celebrate Pankratz’s retirement, Sunshine Meadows will host a staff luncheon and a community reception on Dec. 19 from 4–6 p.m. Residents, staff, families, and community members are invited to attend.

Beginning September 24, 2025, Reno County EMS staff have been visiting local businesses, schools, churches, and other organizations to make sure Automated External Defibrillators — or AEDs — are properly registered, maintained, and ready for use in an emergency.

The outreach effort follows a new Kansas law that took effect July 1 requiring all AEDs to be registered through the PulsePoint app. The app allows emergency responders to quickly locate nearby defibrillators when someone experiences cardiac arrest and ensures that each device’s batteries and pads are up to date.

According to Reno County EMS Education Coordinator Connor Bounds, the verification process also opens doors for community outreach and training. EMS personnel are using site visits to educate the public about CPR, first aid, and the importance of AED maintenance.

Since the inspections began, EMS has already found locations with expired supplies and others that have recently added additional AEDs. The initiative has also sparked new interest from community members who want to learn bystander CPR.

Each minute counts during a cardiac emergency. National data show that for every minute a person in cardiac arrest does not receive CPR or have an AED applied, their chance of survival decreases by about 10 percent. With more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occurring outside hospitals each year and fewer than 10 percent surviving, EMS officials say widespread AED access and community training can make a critical difference.

Registering an AED is simple: residents and organizations can use the web links or QR codes provided by Reno County EMS to complete the process. Once registered, EMS staff will follow up to verify the information and offer details about upcoming CPR and first aid courses.

Hutchinson Public Schools officials are encouraging voters to learn the facts about the district’s upcoming bond proposal, emphasizing transparency, affordability, and long-term benefits for students and the community.

Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson, and Curriculum Coordinator Lisa Yantes, discussed the plan and addressed key questions in a recent interview.

Understanding the bond proposal Dr. Johnson said the district’s website, usd308.com, is the best single source of information about the bond, including a bond calculator that allows property owners to see exactly how the proposal would affect their taxes.

“For a $100,000 home, the five mills would cost less than $5 a month,” Johnson explained. “You can plug in your market value, and it will calculate your annual and monthly change.”

If approved, the district’s mill levy would rise from about 52 to 57 mills — still lower than many surrounding school districts. Johnson noted that USD 308 has lowered its mill levy nine times in the past ten years, dropping it by 3.5 mills overall, and that this increase is designed to keep Hutchinson competitive with nearby communities such as Andover, Derby, and Goddard that have all passed new school bonds.

Addressing common questions Johnson said much of the current discussion stems from understandable concerns about property taxes and enrollment.

“Property values have gone up significantly — about 65% in some cases — and that drives up taxes even when the mill rate stays low,” she said. “At the same time, we’ve continued to reduce our mill levy wherever possible.”

As for declining enrollment, Johnson clarified that the issue is tied to countywide population decline, not a lack of confidence in Hutchinson schools.

“In 2015, we had 4,700 students; today we have about 4,000,” she said. “Those 4,000 deserve the same quality education as their predecessors. Hutchinson isn’t a dying town — it’s growing, with new industries coming in. Quality schools are vital for attracting families and businesses.”

Building locations and floodplain concerns Johnson said heat mapping data showed that most USD 308 students live between 4th Avenue and 23rd Avenue, making a central campus location most efficient.

The district is also addressing concerns about a potential floodplain near the proposed middle school site. “Civil engineers are working closely with the city,” Johnson said. “There’s already a planned retention pond and other mitigation steps. The floodplain designation may even be overstated.”

Repurposing, not abandoning, buildings The bond plan calls for repurposing the first floor of HMS-8 for early childhood education — a $5 million project that saves over $20 million compared to building new.

“We’ve had a lot of interest from organizations in the buildings we’d take offline,” Johnson said. “Nothing will just sit empty.”

Acedemic benefits and curriculum alignment Curriculum Coordinator Lisa Yantes emphasized how the middle school redesign would strengthen learning continuity.

“When sixth, seventh, and eighth grades are together, teachers can collaborate more effectively,” Yantes said. “It allows us to align curriculum across subjects and create a smoother transition into high school.”

Yantes also highlighted the district’s strong dual-credit and technical education programs, noting that many Hutchinson High students graduate with college credits — sometimes enough to earn a degree a year early.
