HUTCHINSON, Kan. -&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Transportation will host a public open house for the U.S. 400 Bridge Replacement project on Wednesday, April 30, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Mullinville&nbsp;City Hall Cafeteria, located at 110 S. Main in Mullinville.

The public open house will be a come-and-go event and will feature proposed plans for review. The project is in the preliminary design stage and needs public feedback at this meeting to determine the best path forward.

Landowners near the project are to receive a separate mailing for a meeting earlier that day to address their concerns.

This project is redesigning the U.S. 400 and U.S. 54 junction east of Mullinville. The project would replace two bridges on U.S. 400 (over U.S. 54 and the Union Pacific Railroad).

If you are unable to attend, meeting information and an opportunity for comments will be available online at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ksdot.gov/projects/south-central-kansas-projects/u-s-400-bridge-replacements-in-kiowa-county">https://www.ksdot.gov/projects/south-central-kansas-projects/u-s-400-bridge-replacements-in-kiowa-county</a>&nbsp;following the meeting through May 28.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Excitement continues to grow around the new YMCA facility under construction on North Lorraine Street, as branch director David Foster shared updates this week on progress, upcoming programs, and recent honors within the Greater Hutchinson YMCA.

“Things are moving right along,” Foster said. “We’ve already dug the lap pool and will be digging the family pool in the coming days. Concrete for the pool walls and footings for the building will go in soon, and before long, it’ll start taking real shape.”

Though fenced off, updates are available via the YMCA’s Facebook series “Behind the Fence,” which gives viewers a glimpse of construction activity that’s otherwise out of public view.

The project represents more than just a new building—it’s a symbol of growth and expanding opportunity for local families. “We’re excited about what’s to come,” Foster said.

Youth Sports and Summer Activities

With warmer weather on the way, the YMCA is gearing up for a busy summer of youth sports. T-ball and machine pitch baseball registration is open until May 5, serving children ages 3 to 9. Dodgeball registration runs through May 30 for students in grades 1 through 8.

“These are fun, active programs,” Foster said. “We expect a few hundred kids to participate again this summer, and it’s a great way to keep them engaged once school is out.”

The cost is $25 for YMCA members and $45 for non-members.

Another returning favorite is Saturday Night at the Y, a free program for all middle school students in Hutchinson and Reno County. The next event is set for May 10 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees can swim, play basketball, work out, and enjoy games, plus pizza and drinks before heading home.

“We’ve had over 350 students participate so far this year,” said Foster. “It’s a safe, fun way for them to stay active and social.”

The event will move to Salt City Splash for the summer months, in partnership with Hutch Rec.

Swim Lessons, Gymnastics and Academy Programs

As temperatures rise, many families are thinking about water safety—and the YMCA has them covered with year-round swim lessons in its current facility at 716 E. 13th Ave., near Hutchinson High School.

“People forget we have a pool now, not just the new one being built,” Foster noted. “We offer monthly swim lessons, gymnastics, and intermediate Academy levels that help prepare kids for team participation.”

Team opportunities are also available for those looking for more intensive instruction and competitions in both swimming and gymnastics.

The Hutchinson YMCA was recently recognized at the Greater Wichita YMCA’s annual celebration in Andover, where Brad Dillon was named the 2024 Volunteer of the Year. Dillon, who has chaired Hutchinson’s capital campaign, was selected among 11 nominees across the association.

“It’s a big honor,” said Foster. “Brad has been instrumental in our success, and it’s exciting to see him recognized.”

This marks the second time Hutchinson has received the award since joining the Greater Wichita YMCA network in 2022. Will Lewis was honored in 2023.

Brandon McVay, a multi-sport coach at the YMCA, was also named Hutchinson’s 2024 Volunteer Coach of the Year for his commitment to youth development through sportsmanship and mentorship.

Though the new facility is bringing major improvements, including a steam room, sauna and hot tub, Foster acknowledged some challenges in the current building. The 50-year-old steam room recently became inoperable, and due to high replacement costs, won’t be repaired before the move.

“We appreciate everyone’s understanding,” Foster said. “We’re investing in a much better experience with the new Y.”

Foster also teased future plans to expand NJCAA tournament team involvement at the YMCA following positive outreach from Monroe College and the NJCAA president.

“We’re proud to provide opportunities for visiting teams to connect with local youth,” he said. “And next year, we’re hoping to get every team involved.”

With new facilities on the horizon, packed youth programs, and strong community support, Foster said it best: “It’s a great time to be part of the Y.”

Daily Bookings 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man was taken into custody Tuesday following a domestic disturbance that escalated into a multi-agency standoff involving local law enforcement and a SWAT team.

At about 4:15 p.m. on April 15, officers with the Hutchinson Police Department, along with personnel from several Reno County law enforcement agencies, responded to reports of a domestic disturbance involving an armed suspect near 17th Avenue and Plum Street.

Upon arrival, officers located a female victim at the Kwik Shop convenience store. She was evaluated at the scene by Reno County EMS and later transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment of her injuries. Her condition was not immediately released.

Other officers responded to a nearby residence where the suspect was believed to be located. A perimeter was established, and officers attempted to make contact with the suspect but received no response. The Reno County SWAT team was then called in and made repeated efforts to communicate with the individual.

After multiple failed attempts to contact the suspect, SWAT officers entered the home and arrested Damon M. Cantu, 23, of Hutchinson. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Cantu faces numerous charges, including attempted second-degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery by strangulation, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threat, felony interference with law enforcement, endangerment, criminal damage and disorderly conduct.

 </figure>MARC JACOBS Hutch Post&nbsp;HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man was taken into custody Tuesday following a domestic disturbance that escalated into a multi-agency standoff involving local law enforcement and a SWAT team.At about 4:15 p.m. on April 15, officers with the Hutchinson Police Department, along with personnel from several Reno County law enforcement agencies, responded to reports of a domestic disturbance involving an armed suspect near 17th Avenue and Plum Street.Upon arrival, officers located a female victim at the Kwik Shop convenience store. She was evaluated at the scene by Reno County EMS and later transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for treatment of her injuries. Her condition was not immediately released.Other officers responded to a nearby residence where the suspect was believed to be located. A perimeter was established, and officers attempted to make contact with the suspect but received no response. The Reno County SWAT team was then called in and made repeated efforts to communicate with the individual.After multiple failed attempts to contact the suspect, SWAT officers entered the home and arrested Damon M. Cantu, 23, of Hutchinson. Armed suspect taken into custody after standoff in Hutchinson

We had local exterminator Jeff Wells with Advance Pest Control stop by the BW Morning Show to talk about pest control, and what homeowners can do to help control pests. &nbsp;

We asked Jeff what his expectations are for this spring and summer. &nbsp;“It's, you know, in fact, my wife and I were talking about this earlier in the year, and I said, this may be one of those years where our our swarm calls are really up,” said Wells.&nbsp;

We asked about swarm season and how it's going so far this spring. &nbsp;“So we have received a bunch of, you know, termite swarm calls, they're coming. And you know when they show up, boy, you know, because they don't show up in single spies, but they are in battalions when they arrive. And so, lot of phone calls with those going on right now. And there's a distinct difference between swarming termites and ants. and ants will also swarm this time of year,” said Wells. &nbsp;

Wells said that one important thing to remember when you call a pest control service is to save the bug. Any pest control company you call out to your home needs to know the target pest. &nbsp;&nbsp;

He elaborated on why that is so important, “We had an instance the other day where a customer thought they had bat bugs. Turns out they didn't have bat bugs. They had bed bugs, and the treatment for those two critters varies. In fact, the treatment differential between bids was about $6,000 and so just the little hairs on the pronotum of this bug made the difference in what that treatment was going to look like. And so again, it's just super important for us to know what we're going after,” Wells said. &nbsp;

Thats because they can choose the products, the right products to make sure they are applying them appropriately. &nbsp;&nbsp;

On a final note, we asked what the homeowner can do preemptively to help with pest control.&nbsp; 

“I think folks can do a lot of stuff around the outside of their house to help reduce population of nuisance insects, the occasional invaders that we'll call them, and a lot of that has to do with manicuring stuff, removing, you know, debris, from around the outside of the house. Same thing with termites. If we can avoid stacking, you know, wood right against the house, create some breaks and some spacing. That really does, does you a lot of good even, kind of keeping the dirt away from the brick ledge of the house and kind of keeping it down off the siding. You just have a little Mother Nature pest control helping you along the way, and she's a lot cheaper than the rest of us.”&nbsp;

Spring is here.... and so are the bugs  

The Hutchinson Fire Department rescued two people from an afternoon house fire on Monday. &nbsp;&nbsp;

In a media release, the fire department said that they responded to a house fire in the 600 block of North Plum Street shortly before 12:30 p.m. &nbsp;While they were enroute to the fire dispatch notified responding units that there were two people trapped on the second floor of the residence. &nbsp;

Initial units on the scene found heavy smoke coming out of the residence and two female victims self-evacuating out of windows on the second story.&nbsp; One of the victims was rescued via a ground ladder and the second via a fire apparatus.&nbsp; The victims were transported to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Due to the conditions, a request was made to bring all available fire units to the scene. Two cats were later found while searching the residence and treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. They were taken by animal control for observation. &nbsp;

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Hutchinson Fire Department Fire Marshals Office &nbsp;

Adopt a Furry Friend: Boortz  

The McPherson County Board of County Commissioners on Monday enacted a burn ban for all of McPherson County.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The ban is effective beginning on April 14 and is in effect until the Board of County Commissioners rescinds it.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The ban includes all outdoor fires including: • Fence rows, ditches, fields and debris • Brush piles • Burn pits, campfires, back yard fire pits and chimeneas • Residential trash in burn barrels&nbsp;

According to the ban you can use:&nbsp; • Barbeque grills and smokers • Permanent backyard stove and fireplaces • Fixed barbeque grill in a park or recreation area&nbsp;

RENO COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 3p.m. Monday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Lexus E7 driven by Gregory Lynn&nbsp; Baker, 69, Wichita, was southbound on Kansas 14 one mile north of Hutchinson.&nbsp;

The car crossed the center&nbsp;line and struck a 2024 Kenworth semi driven by Troy Edward Myers, 52, Andover, head-on.

EMS transported Baker to&nbsp;Ascension Via Christi St Francis. Myers was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The crash temporarily closed K-14 between Wilson Road and 4th Avenue.

The Reno County Sheriff's Office and Kansas Highway Patrol are on the scene of an injury accident on K-14.&nbsp;

They say that the highway is closed between Wilson Road and Fourth Avenue and will be for an undetermined period of time.&nbsp;

We are working to gather information on the accident and will pass it along when it is available.

Kansas man hospitalized after head-on crash with a semi

TOPEKA –The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for the City of Abbyville public water supply system located in Reno County. The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination. 

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind notice following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing of drinking water samples collected from the City of Abbyville indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved.

Boil Water Advisory rescinded for City of Abbyville 

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A woman accused of driving a stolen vehicle that was involved in a crash that killed a Hutchinson woman attended an arraignment hearing on Monday morning.

Katelyn Barrioz, 24 of Wichita, pled guilty to 2nd degree murder, fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, and theft in Judge Seth Rundle’s courtroom, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In November she was charged with First-Degree Felony Murder, Second-Degree Murder – Reckless, Felony Flee and Elude, Aggravated Burglary, Auto Theft and Criminal Damage to Property, according to Wichita Police spokesman Andrew Ford.

On October 27, police located an occupied stolen vehicle at the Riverwalk Apartments, according to Officer Kris Gupilan. Officers monitored the vehicle using unmarked cars, and air support was requested from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

&nbsp;The vehicle stopped at Walmart, 29th and Rock Road in Wichita. Officers deployed spike strips to prevent the vehicle from leaving, successfully deflating two tires.

Despite this, the suspect later identified as Barrioz, fled the Walmart parking lot, striking a police vehicle.

Officers did not pursue the vehicle, but KHP air support continued to track it from above. The vehicle proceeded to a business on North Webb Road, where two individuals exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

One individual was apprehended, while&nbsp; Barrioz stole the van from the business and fled south on Webb, then west on 29th Street, according to Gupilan.

KHP Air maintained surveillance of the stolen vehicle, which, at 29th and Wilderness, collided with a&nbsp; Chevy Cobalt.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the stolen 2024 Ford Transit Van driven by Barrioz, 24, Wichita, was westbound in the eastbound lanes in the&nbsp;8700 block of E 29th St N in Wichita traveling in the inside lane.

The van struck an eastbound 2010 Chevy Cobalt driven by Mandy Lynn&nbsp;Buckwalter, 43, Hutchinson, head-on.

Buckwalter was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported Barrioz to Wesley Medical Center for treatment. She was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail later that week, according to online jail records.&nbsp;

She is now scheduled for sentencing on April 28.

The Hutchinson Horticulture Club is hosting its annual plant sale this coming Saturday.&nbsp; The sale will be held in the science lab at the Dillon Nature Center.&nbsp; Doors open at 8 a.m., and the sale ends at 2 p.m.&nbsp;

Betty Taylor of the Horticulture Club said, "The plant sale consists of plants that club members have divided perennials in their yard, grown extra, annuals, whatever they want to donate to the plant sale. I never know what's going to show up until it comes."&nbsp;

Horticulture Club to host annual plant sale this Saturday 

PRATT, Kan. — A Kansas pilot turned the sky into a canvas for a high-flying proposal, using his flight path to spell out “Will you marry me, Taylor?”

The proposal took place Wednesday, April 9, above the skies near Pratt. Terry Williamson, a local pilot flying a Beech P35 Bonanza, mapped out the message in advance and then flew the route, which took just over two hours to complete.

“I have ForeFlight, which is an app with a scratch pad where you can draw over the map,” Williamson said. “I used that to sketch the message out on the ground first, practiced it several times, and then followed the route in the air. I thought it would take 45 minutes, but FlightAware says it took two hours and six minutes from takeoff to landing.”

The flight—and the effort—was worth it.

He said his fiancée was at work at the time, which helped keep the surprise intact.

“If I did it when she wasn’t working, she’d know where I was and it wouldn’t have been a surprise,” he said.

She discovered the proposal later that day after Williamson posted a link to the flight path on Facebook.
