Dillons unveils fall savings, 4X Fuel Points promotion

HUTCHINSON — After nearly a decade of service as Hutchinson’s Fire Chief, Steven Beer has announced he will retire in March 2026.

City Manager Enrico Villegas read Beer’s retirement letter during Tuesday’s Hutchinson City Council meeting. In the letter, Beer expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve the community and reflected on his long career in public service.

“It is now time to start a new chapter in my life by giving back to my wife, children and grandkids,” Beer wrote. “I have spent most of my life working in the public sector and have met and worked with some tremendous individuals. The support from this community, city manager, city council, city staff and fire department members is unparalleled. I am forever grateful to have been able to work alongside such individuals and consider many of these individuals my friends.”

Beer was hired in February 2017 as Hutchinson’s eleventh fire chief. At the time, then–City Manager John Deardorff praised Beer’s credentials, saying his “educational accomplishments, leadership abilities and fire and rescue experience make him a perfect fit for the city.”

During his tenure, Beer led the department through modernization efforts, major emergency responses, and strengthened partnerships with regional agencies.

His final day as Fire Chief is scheduled for March 27, 2026.

Beer to retire as Hutchinson Fire Chief in March

The Hutchinson City Council approved several key community development projects during its Tuesday evening meeting, including a new residential neighborhood, park improvements, and a facility upgrade at the Hutchinson Animal Shelter.

New Neighborhood near 11th and Hendricks Council members voted unanimously to approve a proposal from Garibay Properties LLC to develop 10.9 acres near 11th Avenue and Hendricks into a new residential neighborhood. The development will feature 30 single-family homes, each on lots of at least 9,000 square feet.

Before the vote, City Manager Enrico Villegas thanked the council for having the foresight to purchase the property, saying their investment allowed the city to seize this new opportunity for housing growth.

The city and Garibay Properties will now begin working on a development agreement outlining project details and timelines.

Free-Range Cat Room at Animal Shelter In another unanimous vote, the council awarded WDM Architects the contract to design and oversee construction of a free-range cat room at the Hutchinson Animal Shelter.

Michaela Schommer, Director of Animal Services, explained that the new room will enhance the quality of life for cats and increase adoption rates by allowing potential adopters to observe the cats’ personalities in an open, interactive environment.

Funding for the project will come entirely from the Gossage Trust, a city-held trust designated for improvements to the animal shelter — meaning no taxpayer funds will be used.

Fairgrounds Park Playground Update The city council also approved moving forward with the Fairgrounds Park playground replacement project at a reduced cost.

The city was able to cut costs from $161,818 to $141,183 by taking on some site preparation work internally, including installing the crushed gravel base beneath the playground’s poured-in-place rubber surface.

The revised cost falls below the city’s $150,000 budget, and the project was approved unanimously.

Creation of Parks and Forestry Board Finally, council members voted unanimously to establish a new Parks and Forestry Board, which will replace the existing Tree Board.

The new board will advise on park matters, capital improvements, community beautification, and urban forestry while engaging residents in planning discussions about public spaces.

The board will include five voting members and two non-voting ex-officio members—one from the Hutchinson Zoo and another from the Hutchinson Public Art Design Council.

The next meeting of the Hutchinson City is scheduled for Nov. 4.&nbsp;

The Reno County Commission will take up infrastructure and equipment items during its meeting Wednesday, Oct. 22, including repairs to the courthouse dome, a fire alarm system replacement, and the purchase of new patrol vehicles for the Sheriff’s Office.

Facilities Director Kyle Stewart reported that cracks between stones in the courthouse dome are allowing rainwater to leak behind the stonework, seeping down into ceilings on the fifth floor. Mortar deterioration on the east side of the fifth floor has also led to water intrusion, damaging paint and drywall in multiple offices.

According to Stewart, these issues were not addressed in an earlier courthouse renovation project due to cost-cutting measures. Temporary fixes have been applied by county staff, but he warned that they are not sustainable solutions.

After seeking bids from 11 masonry contractors, nine of those contractors declined to submit a bid due to the scope of the project. Stewart said only Mid-Continental Restoration of Fort Scott submitted a formal proposal—totaling $69,200—which he recommended the commission approve.

Stewart also recommends replacing the courthouse’s outdated fire alarm system. The current system, supplied by a manufacturer that was acquired in 2016, has been obsolete for several years, with replacement parts no longer available. Stewart noted that the system has become prone to false alarms, to the point that staff no longer respond to them.

Bids were received from FireTronics Partners of Hutchinson ($45,131), Pinnacle Fire &amp; Automation of Wichita ($41,300), and Johnson Controls of Wichita ($117,095). Despite not being the lowest bid, Stewart recommended FireTronics, citing its local presence and the fact that its equipment is used throughout other county facilities.

Commissioners will also consider approving the purchase of three new Ford Police Interceptor Utility SUVs for the Reno County Sheriff’s Office. Automotive Director Ron Brubaker noted that all patrol vehicles in the department have been Police Interceptor Utilities since 2011, which simplifies maintenance and standardizes parts.

Temporary fixes have been applied by county staff, but he warned that they are not sustainable solutions.After seeking bids from 11 masonry contractors, nine of those contractors declined to submit a bid due to the scope of the project. Stewart said only Mid-Continental Restoration of Fort Scott submitted a formal proposal—totaling $69,200—which he recommended the commission approve.<h2>Fire Alarm System Replacement</h2>Stewart also recommends replacing the courthouse’s outdated fire alarm system. The current system, supplied by a manufacturer that was acquired in 2016, has been obsolete for several years, with replacement parts no longer available. Stewart noted that the system has become prone to false alarms, to the point that staff no longer respond to them.Bids were received from FireTronics Partners of Hutchinson ($45,131), Pinnacle Fire &amp; Automation of Wichita ($41,300), and Johnson Controls of Wichita ($117,095). Despite not being the lowest bid, Stewart recommended FireTronics, citing its local presence and the fact that its equipment is used throughout other county facilities.<h2>Sheriff’s Office Vehicle Purchases</h2>Commissioners will also consider approving the purchase of three new Ford Police Interceptor Utility SUVs for the Reno County Sheriff’s Office. MCPHERSON COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 1:30p.m. Tuesday in McPherson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Ford Edge driven by Irene M.&nbsp;Charles, 57, Gypsum, attempted to enter into southbound traffic from Interstate 135 southbound on ramp at the Lindsborg. The driver failed to yield to traffic and side swiped 2018 Peterbilt semi driven by Zachary P.&nbsp;Vytlacil, 37, Moundridge.

EMS transported Charles to Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; Vytlacil was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kansas woman hospitalized after SUV side swiped a semi

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Hutchinson firefighters quickly extinguished a garage fire Tuesday afternoon on the city’s east side.

Crews responded to the 1500 block of East 23rd Avenue for a report of a detached garage on fire. Garage fire damages building on east side of Hutchinson

Wichita, Kan. — U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-Kansas) on Monday praised a major new defense initiative that places Kansas at the forefront of America’s evolving air and base defense strategy. The U.S. Air Force’s Air Combat Command (ACC) has announced that the Kansas Air National Guard’s 184th Wing, headquartered at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, will join the newly established Point Defense Task Force and host a Point Defense Battle Lab.

Additionally, the Smoky Hill Air National Guard Range near Salina will serve as a designated test site for counter-unmanned aerial systems (UAS) experimentation—an increasingly critical capability as the U.S. military works to counter small drone threats to installations and personnel.

The new assignments come in response to ACC’s directive to accelerate the development of base defense technologies, particularly those countering small UAS incursions. The 184th Wing was chosen for its renowned expertise in air battle management, cyber operations, and AI-enabled Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR).

Senator Marshall and Congressman Ron Estes (R-Kansas-4) worked closely with the Department of War, the Department of the Air Force, and Air Combat Command to secure the project for Kansas.

“From defending our borders to protecting our skies, the Kansas National Guard continues to lead,” said Senator Marshall. “I’ve directly engaged with the Department of War to champion our Guard’s unmatched capabilities. KS Air National Guard selected for New Point Defense Mission 

BrightHouse has officially launched Jean’s House, a first-of-its-kind pilot program in Kansas designed to provide long-term support for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. The new facility marks a shift from traditional short-term shelter care to a holistic, skills-based approach aimed at helping survivors rebuild their lives and achieve independence.

Executive Director Sue Wray said the program allows participants to stay six to eighteen months, giving them time to heal, gain workplace skills, and restore their self-esteem.

“This is a new approach to helping survivors — one that focuses on stability and empowerment,” Wray explained. “We want people to leave Jean’s House with the confidence and skills to support themselves, so they don’t feel forced to return to abusive situations.”

The home, donated by a local benefactor and refurbished in honor of his mother, Jean, received startup funding from both Governor Laura Kelly’s administration and the Kansas Legislature, making it a bipartisan-supported initiative. BrightHouse hopes the program’s success will inspire similar efforts across the state.

Unlike an emergency shelter, which offers immediate refuge, Jean’s House emphasizes long-term recovery through individualized plans. Residents will work toward professional certifications or career training — whether in trades, technical fields, or creative industries — while also participating in counseling, mentoring, and life-skills education.

Each participant is paired with a mentor and receives training in financial literacy, parenting, relationship skills, and emotional resilience.

“We want them to recognize red flags and believe they are worthy of healthy, positive relationships,” Wray said. “This is about rebuilding confidence as much as rebuilding lives.”

While domestic violence is often associated with women, Wray emphasized that abuse affects men as well. Jean’s House is designed to accommodate both men and women, a key distinction from traditional shelter models.

“Abuse can happen to anyone,” she said. “We’ll provide safety and support regardless of gender — everyone deserves the chance to live free from violence and to build a sustainable future.”

Although space is limited to five to eight residents at a time, BrightHouse plans to extend program services to others in the community. Survivors who cannot live at Jean’s House — due to family size, personal preference, or other circumstances — can still participate in the work-skills and self-development programs.

“Only about 15 percent of the people who come to us need emergency shelter,” Wray noted. “We also offer therapy, safety planning, and support groups. Even if someone’s abuse was years ago, we can still help them heal and move forward.”

Two residents are already enrolled in the program — both young women pursuing education and career goals. One hopes to become a therapist; the other is exploring vocational training.

“No matter your age or background,” Wray said, “you deserve the chance to have your own place, earn your own way, and live without fear. Jean’s House is here to make that possible.”

&nbsp;Mennonite Friendship Communities is preparing for its annual fundraising gala, An Evening at the Burt, set for Tuesday, Oct. 28 at the Crystal Ballroom in the historic Burt Building, located at B and Main in downtown Hutchinson.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with live lobby music from “Hand Pan Dan” and a silent auction preview. Dinner and the evening program begin at 6:30 p.m., highlighted by guest speaker Larry Hatteberg — the beloved Kansas journalist known for his long-running “Hatteberg’s People” series spotlighting inspiring Kansans.

Last year’s Evening at the Burt raised funds for exterior upgrades and renovations to Mennonite Friendship’s south entry along Blanchard. This year’s proceeds will focus on revitalizing one of the facility’s South Hall neighborhoods, including new flooring, lighting, and interior improvements. The South Hutchinson senior living community, founded in 1973, is now more than 50 years old.

“It’s time to bring fresh life inside,” said Executive Director Dawn Vay. “Now that we’ve created a welcoming entrance, we want residents and guests to feel that same warmth and comfort throughout the interior.”

The evening also includes an extensive silent auction, featuring vacation packages, unique experiences, and local treasures. Among the top items are a stay in Sedona, Arizona, a Branson getaway package, a 20x20 stamped concrete patio, and an Amish meal in Yoder. The Hutchinson City Council will meet tonight at city hall to address an agenda that includes proclamations, financial authorizations, redevelopment decisions and community amenity upgrades. The meeting promises to shape key infrastructure and neighborhood priorities for the city.

The city council will proclaim Oct. 28 as National First Responder's Day.&nbsp; This recognizes the service of local police, fire, EMS and other emergency personnel.&nbsp;

There are several items on the council's consent agenda:&nbsp; •&nbsp;&nbsp;Minutes from the Council’s Oct. 7, 2025 meeting. •&nbsp;&nbsp;An appropriation ordinance totaling $1,828,765.30. •&nbsp;&nbsp;The City’s September 2025 financial reports. •&nbsp;&nbsp;A Memorandum of Understanding with the Service Employees International Union Local (SEIU). •&nbsp;&nbsp;Approval of the “Pathways to a Healthy Kansas Community Planning Package” — a health-and-wellness initiative.

The Council will deliberate and vote on several resolutions aimed at maintaining and upgrading core city systems: •&nbsp;&nbsp;Updated water &amp; wastewater rates — new pricing to support utility operations and infrastructure. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Authorization of general obligation bonds to fund water system improvements across the city. •&nbsp;&nbsp;A resolution to authorize the public sale of general obligation bonds and notes of the City of Hutchinson, facilitating the capital funding for these projects.

Several significant actions are slated for discussion and possible approval: •&nbsp;&nbsp;Presentation of the 2024 Financial Audit, giving the public a snapshot of city finances and performance. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Consideration of awarding RFP #25-58 for the “Hayes Site” near Eleventh and Hendricks to Garibay Properties LLC, advancing redevelopment efforts at that location. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Approval of the purchase of new playground equipment for Fairgrounds Park in the amount of $141,183.19, to be sourced from Cunningham Recreation. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Approval of design services agreement with WDM Architects P.A. for the addition of a “free-range cat room” at the city’s animal shelter. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Consideration of an ordinance to establish a new Parks &amp; Forestry Board, repealing the prior structure in Article II of Chapter 11 of the City Code. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Update and discussion on the Reno County Economic Development Corporation Strategic Plan, spotlighting economic development, workforce, and business growth efforts in the region.

Reno County Health Department Encourages Residents to Get Flu Vaccines

As cooler weather settles in, the Reno County Health Department is reminding residents that it’s not too late to get their annual flu shot. While September and October are considered the best months for vaccination, health officials say protection at any time during flu season can help reduce the risk of illness and complications.

Some individuals may benefit from getting vaccinated earlier, including pregnant women in their third trimester and young children who require two doses. Children ages six months to eight years old may need two doses if they are receiving the flu vaccine for the first time, have only had one dose in the past, or if their vaccination history is uncertain.

Health experts stress that the flu shot remains the best defense against influenza, helping to prevent severe symptoms, hospitalizations, and community spread.

Young artists will have a chance to make a splash this November at the Hutchinson Art Center’s Monthly Children’s Art Project, where the theme is “Koi Fish.”

The make-and-take art sessions, led by local artist and educator Beckie Vega, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 8, with two class options — Group A from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. and Group B from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. Designed for children ages 6 to 12, each group art class costs $8 per child.

Students will explore different art techniques inspired by the graceful movement and symbolism of koi fish. Group A will learn watercolor resist methods, while Group B will combine watercolor and pen for detailed compositions. Both groups will focus on drawing, linework, shape, and space, encouraging creativity and confidence in artistic expression.

These monthly workshops are all about exploration and fun, the art center said in their release. Kids not only get to learn new techniques but also take home something they’re proud of — something they made with their own hands.

Spaces fill quickly, and the deadline to register is Friday, Nov. 7. Registration can be completed by visiting or contacting the Hutchinson Art Center.

Hutchinson Art Center to hold children's make and take art session

Central Christian Schools is wrapping up a busy October with community events and student activities that bring together service, celebration, and faith.

The school’s annual Red Cross blood drive takes place today (Monday) from 1 to 6 p.m. in the school Commons. Dr. Walker said the event serves two purposes — supporting a critical community need for blood donations and helping fund the school’s music department, which is preparing for a spring trip to Branson, Missouri.

“This helps our choir travel to Branson, where they’ll open for The Haygoods this spring,” Walker said. “If you’re able, we encourage you to stop by and donate — even walk-ins are welcome.”

Walker noted that the Red Cross is still facing lower-than-normal donation levels nationwide and that all blood types are needed.

Central Christian’s new early education center continues to experience high enrollment interest — but staffing remains the limiting factor.

“We’ve got plenty of families who want to enroll,” Walker said, “but staffing continues to be the challenge, just like across the childcare industry.”

He added that the school offers unique incentives for staff, including free childcare for their own children and tuition discounts for those with kids enrolled in K–12 programs.

“We’re looking for people who love Jesus and love kids,” Walker said. “If that’s you, come talk to us — we’d love to have you on our team.”

Central Christian’s athletic programs are finishing strong this fall. The volleyball team continues to improve under Coach Mary Ver Steeg, while the football team remains undefeated (7–0) heading into Friday’s district game at Norwich.

“It’s been fun to see our athletes using their God-given gifts to bring Him glory,” Walker said. “And it’s great when underclassmen get some game experience — that builds the future of the program.”

The school will host its first-ever Fall Fest on Monday, Oct. 27, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Central Christian School parking lot. The event is open to the entire community and will feature food trucks, games, live music, and family activities.

Vendors include Burger Depot, Stretch’s Street Tacos, and Lighthouse Lemonade, along with attractions such as axe throwing from Ax It Up Hutch, pumpkin painting, face painting, and calf roping games.

“This isn’t just for CCS families — it’s for everyone in Hutchinson,” Walker said. “Come out, grab a taco, paint a pumpkin, and just enjoy a great night of family fun.”

Looking ahead, Central Christian’s annual Stewardship Dinner is set for Friday, Nov. 15, featuring guest speaker Dan Meers, who portrayed KC Wolf, the Kansas City Chiefs’ beloved mascot, for 35 years.

“Dan is a phenomenal speaker who shares powerful stories about faith, perseverance, and purpose,” Walker said. “It’s free to attend, but we do ask for reservations so we can plan for food and seating.”

Each weekday morning at 6:38 a.m., listeners tuning in to KWBW Radio hear a familiar voice offering a minute of inspiration and reflection. That voice belongs to Pastor Jim Burns, whose segment “Something to Think About” has quickly become a local favorite among early risers and commuters.

Burns, a Hutchinson native and longtime pastor, started the short-form radio devotion nearly three decades ago in Van Wert, Ohio, while serving in ministry there. Wanting to share brief, encouraging messages that fit the pace of daily life, he created the one-minute segment blending faith, humor, and thoughtful perspective.

“When we moved back to Kansas, my wife and I decided we wanted to keep the program going,” Burns said. 

Burns tells us, “I pitched it to every radio station in the area—but KWBW was the only one that liked it enough to put it on the air."

The segment airs Monday through Friday at 6:38 a.m., where Burns’ voice has become part of the morning routine for many Reno County listeners. Each episode draws from life lessons, seasonal reflections, and scripture, designed to “plant a little gospel seed” in less than a minute.

Burns’ connection to KWBW goes back decades. During his years as pastor at Westside Baptist Church in Hutchinson, he hosted weekly church broadcasts on the station. Now, after years in Ohio, he’s come full circle—back home, back on the air, and back to sharing something meaningful with his community.

“I just want to give people something positive to start their day,” Burns said. “You never know who might be listening—someone who needs a little encouragement or a reminder that God cares about them. That’s what ‘Something to Think About’ is all about.”
