As March marks National Reading Month, United Way of Reno County reminds Kansans of the opportunity to build a free home library with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

By enrolling in this program, all young children (from newborns to age five) across the Sunflower State are eligible to receive one free, age-appropriate book mailed directly to their home each month. There are no qualifications other than age and Kansas residency. Families do not need to meet income requirements or complete extensive paperwork. If a child is under five and lives in Kansas, they qualify.

Children enrolled from birth can receive up to 60 books by the time they are ready for kindergarten, and every eligible child in a household can be enrolled to receive their own books. While families may occasionally receive a duplicate title, new selections are regularly introduced to keep the reading experience fresh and engaging.

Recent research underscores the powerful impact of the program. A newly published international study found that Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is linked to stronger early literacy outcomes and richer reading experiences at home. The study indicates the program helps close early literacy gaps by strengthening foundational skills, increasing how often children are read to, and boosting children’s interest and engagement during shared book reading. It also found that families participating in the program are more likely to develop positive reading habits and traditions, with caregivers engaging in meaningful interactions—creating a warm, consistent home literacy environment that supports long-term success.

“Our goal is simple: put books into the hands of children and help families build a culture of reading at home,” said Elizabeth Walton, Development Manager and Dolly Parton Imagination Library Manager at UWRC. “The recent study confirms what we see in our communities every day—when children receive books of their own, families read together more often, conversations grow richer, and kids develop stronger early literacy skills. This program is about more than books. It’s about creating joyful reading experiences that lay the foundation for lifelong learning.”

This reading month, UWRC encourages families and community members to sign up eligible children they might know and spread the word about this free community program supported by UWRC. Build a library at home for free

The Hutchinson Community Foundation has awarded an $8,000 grant to the Buhler Public Library to support a community improvement project aimed at enhancing the library’s visibility and appeal.

The funding was provided through the Fund for Reno County under the foundation’s Community and Economic Development grant program as part of the 2025 Impact Cycle 2.

Library officials plan to use the funds to install a fun, interactive wall mural inside the facility and update the building’s exterior appearance with a new awning along Main Street. The improvements are designed to make the library a destination that visitors will want to return to while increasing awareness of the services it offers.

Foundation representatives said the grant reflects an ongoing investment in projects that strengthen communities across Reno County. By supporting enhancements at the Buhler Public Library, the foundation aims to contribute to local economic vitality and community engagement.

Library leaders said their goal is to emphasize that the library is a welcoming and enjoyable place for residents of all ages — both inside and out.

HCF awards $8K grant to Buhler Public Library

The Dillon Lecture Series (DLS) is proud to announce its first speaker of the 2026 season: legendary award-winning Kansas journalist, Larry Hatteberg.

During a 51-year career centered on telling people’s stories, Hatteberg became a defining voice in Kansas local television. His “Hatteberg’s People” series remains the longest-running television feature in the state’s history, profiling nearly 2,000 Kansans and taking him to 17 foreign countries. A former prime-time anchor and executive news director for KAKE-TV, Hatteberg is also a nationally recognized teacher of photojournalism who has consulted for over 40 stations across the country and the U.S. Department of Defense.

During his lecture, Hatteberg will share insights from his half-century of storytelling — finding the extraordinary in "ordinary" people and illuminating the human spirit through the lens of a camera.

Patrons and attendees should take special note of a change to the traditional schedule for this event. Unlike most Dillon Lectures, which are held in the morning at the Sports Arena, Hatteberg will speak at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 24, at the Stringer Fine Arts Center on the Hutchinson Community College campus.

“Larry Hatteberg is a respected storyteller whose work has had a lasting impact on Kansas communities,” said Susan Buttram, chair of the Dillon Lecture Committee. “We’re excited to welcome him to Hutchinson for what promises to be a meaningful and engaging lecture.”

Hatteberg to open 2026 Dillon Lecture Series

The United Way of Reno County will host a Spring Residential Community&nbsp;Work Day&nbsp;on April 25, launching a new volunteer-driven initiative aimed at helping residents with outdoor and exterior home projects.&nbsp;

The one-day effort is designed to support neighbors who may be unable to complete routine maintenance on their own, with a focus on improving safety,&nbsp;accessibility&nbsp;and overall quality of life. Volunteers will&nbsp;assist&nbsp;with non-structural projects such as yard clean-up, debris removal, small tree or limb removal, exterior painting, flower bed&nbsp;care&nbsp;and fence repairs.&nbsp;

United Way of Reno County is accepting nominations for residents who could&nbsp;benefit&nbsp;from&nbsp;assistance. Priority will be given to households that are elderly, disabled, lower income, ALICE households — an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained,&nbsp;Employed&nbsp;— or those experiencing hardship. Organizers ask nominators to provide detailed information to help match projects with volunteer teams.&nbsp;

Volunteers of all skill levels are encouraged to&nbsp;participate. Participants will work in teams at selected homes and complete outdoor projects intended to make neighborhoods safer,&nbsp;cleaner&nbsp;and more connected. Individuals,&nbsp;friends&nbsp;and groups are all welcome to sign up.&nbsp;

Organizers say the initiative addresses a common challenge for many residents who face physical limitations, financial constraints or unexpected setbacks that can make basic outdoor maintenance overwhelming.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Polar Plunge Returns Saturday to Benefit Special Olympics Kansas 

The Hutchinson Polar Plunge is set to return this Saturday at Midwest Superstore, raising funds to support Special Olympics athletes across Kansas after weather forced a postponement earlier this winter. 

The annual event, organized by Sgt. Andrew Soule of the Reno County Sheriff’s Office, is scheduled to begin with on-site registration at 9 a.m., followed by plunges starting at 10 a.m. or shortly thereafter. The plunge was originally planned for late January but was rescheduled due to extreme cold conditions. 

Soule said the local Polar Plunge began in either 2018 or 2019 after law enforcement officials saw the success of similar events across the state through the Law Enforcement Torch Run movement. 

“We looked at what other communities were doing and decided to give it a try here,” Soule said. “It’s been very successful for us since we started.” 

This year’s plunge returns to Midwest Superstore, a longtime host and sponsor. Additional local supporters include Pools Plus and People’s Bank and Trust.

Funds raised through the event benefit Special Olympics Kansas. While donations are collected locally, Soule explained that all funds raised through Torch Run–affiliated events go to the state level and are then distributed back to local athletes through Special Olympics Kansas programs. 

Registration remains open up until plunge time Saturday morning. Participants can sign up in advance online at soks.org by selecting the Polar Plunge tab and choosing the Hutchinson location, or they can register in person the day of the event. A $75 donation is requested to participate, though organizers work with individuals who want to take part. 

Those who prefer not to plunge can still support the cause by making a donation online or in person at the event. Spectators are also encouraged to attend, with food, drinks, and opportunities to meet local Special Olympics athletes available throughout the morning. 

Soule said the event is about more than just fundraising. 

“These athletes are wonderful people,” he said. “This is our chance to support them and help them continue to compete in the events they take so much pride in throughout the year.” 

Organizers have set a fundraising goal of $8,000 for this year’s Polar Plunge. As of Tuesday morning, approximately $2,445 had been raised.

 The featured auction item — a 30-by-40-foot building — generated $51,000 on its own.

ORIGINAL STORY:&nbsp;A long-running local fundraiser supporting education and humanitarian work in Haiti returns this weekend, with two days of meals, music and a large benefit auction planned at the Pleasant View Activity Center.

The Share Haiti Benefit Auction and Dinner begins Friday evening and continues through Saturday, raising funds for a mission school and community outreach in southern Haiti, several hours away from Port-au-Prince. Organizers Abner Schmucker and Dale Lehman say the mission has seen growing need in recent years as families flee violence and unrest in the capital region.

Share Haiti operates a school in the community of Cote Fer, providing education for children from age three through seventh grade, with plans to add an eighth-grade class next year. The school currently serves about 470 students and employs roughly 70 staff members, including teachers and classroom helpers.

Organizers say education is central to the mission’s work.

“Education gives these children a much better opportunity in life,” Schmucker said. “This school has become one of the premier schools in the area because of its values, quality instruction, and care for students.”

In addition to academics, the mission provides daily hot meals for students—often the only hot meal they receive each day—and offers assistance to families in the surrounding community who come to the mission with urgent needs.

The fundraiser begins Friday at 4:30 p.m. with an authentic Haitian dinner featuring chicken, rice and beans. A singing group from the Moundridge area will perform later in the evening. The meal is donation-based, with dine-in and carry-out options available.

Events continue Saturday morning starting at 7 a.m. with a waffle and sausage breakfast, served until 10 a.m. The benefit auction begins at 9 a.m., overlapping with breakfast service, and continues through the morning. Lunch will also be available, allowing attendees to spend the day at the event.

The auction features a wide range of donated items, including fishing trips, gift certificates, farm and lawn-care services, tools, handmade pottery, hay, baked goods and agricultural equipment.

One of the top items is a site-built building, constructed with donated materials and labor from local businesses and churches. The structure will be a high-quality, stick-built building, with concrete included. The winning bidder is responsible for site preparation, utilities and excavation.

Cedar Crest Amish Mennonite Church and Prairie Chapel Mennonite Church coordinate much of the fundraising and logistics, with additional support from other area churches.

Organizers emphasize that all proceeds directly support the mission’s educational and humanitarian efforts in Haiti.

“The need continues to grow, but so does the impact,” Lehman said. “This is a chance for the community to come together and make a real difference.”

The Share Haiti Benefit Auction and Dinner is open to the public and will be held at the Pleasant View Activity Center, located south of Stutzman’s on Dean Road.

Family Community Theatre is bringing the high-energy musical Newsies to the Flag Theatre for two weekends of performances beginning Thursday.

Directed by Craig Williams, the production tells the story of the real-life 1899 New York City newsboys’ strike, when young newspaper sellers organized against publishing giants Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst over rising paper prices that cut into their already slim earnings.

“This is the first time Newsies has been produced by our organization, and we believe it’s the first time it’s been staged in this part of the state,” Williams said during an interview on the BW Morning Show. “It’s a powerful story about young people finding their voice.”

Williams, who also serves as president of Family Community Theatre, said the show’s demanding choreography and music drew strong interest from local performers. More than 60 people auditioned, with a final cast of 40 selected from eight different communities.

At the center of the story is Jack Kelly, the charismatic newsboy who becomes the leader of the strike. The role is played by Leland Britton, a senior at Sterling High School. Catherine, the show’s female lead, is portrayed by a Wichita college student, while Pulitzer is played by Lee Keil, who shares the stage with his daughter Savannah, a member of the Newsies ensemble.

Producing a large-scale musical like Newsies presents unique challenges in the Flag Theatre’s more intimate space. Williams said creative staging solutions, including the use of scaffolding and multiple levels, helped maximize the 28-foot-wide stage and limited backstage areas.

“Adding music and choreography changes everything,” Williams said. “You need more rehearsal time, more staff, and the right choreographer and music director to make it all work.”

Rehearsals began in early December, with cast members logging nearly 40 rehearsals leading up to opening night. Williams said the process teaches young performers commitment, discipline, and collaboration.

Performances run February 12–15 and February 19–22. Evening shows are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, with 3 p.m. matinees on Sundays.

Williams said audiences can expect an energetic, uplifting production that blends athletic dance numbers with a message about standing up for fairness and community.

Saturday’s schedule includes waffles and sausage from 7 to 10 a.m., with the benefit auction starting at 9 a.m. Lunch will be served at 10:30 a.m. and will include burgers, fries, ice cream and more.

Proceeds from the fundraiser support SHARE Haiti’s mission work, including the La Semence School, which provides education and assistance to children and families in Haiti.

The event will be held at the Pleasantview Activity Center, 5015 S. Dean Road, about a quarter mile south of Stutzman Greenhouse. The benefit is sponsored by Prairie Chapel Mennonite Church and Cedar Crest Mennonite Church.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A longtime volunteer-run thrift store in Hutchinson is continuing its mission of stretching dollars for families while quietly funneling thousands of dollars back into the community each year.

Leaders with the Fair Price Clothing Center say the nonprofit donated just under $61,000 to local charities for 2025, while also helping nearly 1,700 people meet basic clothing and household needs through a voucher program.

Gregory Johnson, Jane McLaughlin and Beth Henshaw recently shared the store’s story and impact, noting the organization traces its roots back to the early 1980s.

“It first started as a small clinic that provided vaccines and checkups for low-income individuals,” Johnson said. “There was a little clothing area in the back. Over time, the clinic closed and it grew into what we are today — a nonprofit clothing center and thrift store.”

Supported by local Methodist churches

The store operates as a ministry of eight Hutchinson-area Methodist churches, and is powered almost entirely by volunteers.

“It’s all a labor of love,” McLaughlin said. “One hundred percent.”

After covering basic operating costs such as utilities, every remaining dollar goes back into Reno County through donations to community partners.

Organizations supported last year included Circles of Reno County, Meals on Wheels, Christian Soup Ministry, Reno County Food Bank, Friendship Meals, Everfull Aging, First Call for Help, BrightHouse, Interfaith Housing, Hospice &amp; HomeCare of Reno County, The Salvation Army, Cancer Council of Reno County, Special Olympics groups, Crime Stoppers, Honor Flight and several church and neighborhood programs.

Voucher system helps families in need

Beyond financial support, the center directly serves residents through a referral-based voucher system.

Partner agencies like First Call for Help, BrightHouse and The Salvation Army issue vouchers to individuals and families. Those vouchers can then be redeemed at the store for essentials such as:

Last year, 1,692 people received assistance through the program.

“They bring the voucher in, and we help them fill their need,” Henshaw explained. “Clothing, household goods, hygiene items — whatever we can provide.”

Like many nonprofits, inventory depends entirely on community donations. Some items disappear quickly. Current high-demand items include:

Smaller household goods such as dishes, silverware, crock pots and irons are also welcome. The store cannot accept large furniture or major appliances due to space limitations.

Volunteers encourage residents to follow the center’s Facebook page for updated needs.

The store is also known for its ultra-low prices, making it accessible for anyone on a budget.

In addition, the last Friday and Saturday of every month feature a popular bag sale, where shoppers can fill a paper bag with clothing for $4. Special month-long sales are also held in March and August.

Misson of dignity and sustainability

Store leaders say their work is about more than bargains — it’s about dignity and stewardship.

“Our goal is to serve the community with compassion and dignity,” McLaughlin said. “And to give a second chance to goods that might otherwise be discarded.”

The Fair Price Clothing Center is located at 15 West B Street, just west of Main.

Hours of operation are; Wednesday and Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to noon.

Donations are accepted during open hours.

For volunteers and supporters, the message is simple. “This is the best place to come shop,” Johnson said. “Everything goes right back into the community.”

Fair Price Clothing Center gives back nearly $61K to Reno County charities

HUTCHINSON — Everfull has announced a reduction in meal prices for participants in its Friendship Meals and Meals on Wheels programs.

The cost for both programs has been lowered to $5.00 per meal, following a three-month operational review and cost analysis. The price change was approved by Everfull’s Board of Directors and took effect Monday, Jan. 26, 2026.

Everfull officials say the reduction is intended to help ease financial pressures for participants, particularly during the winter and early spring months. The organization also noted that the lower price may allow former participants who stopped attending due to cost concerns to return.

In addition to the pricing update, Everfull reminded participants that its Hutchinson services have relocated. Beginning Jan. 26, programs moved from their previous site at the Salvation Army to a new location at 401 E. 4th, Suite D, Hutchinson. The new site is on the west side of the former Osco Drug Store building, now occupied by Dollar Tree and Planet Fitness.

Here's what's happening: Jan. 26 - Feb 1

A new orchestral organization is forming in Hutchinson, aiming to revive and expand opportunities for local musicians while strengthening the community’s connection to live orchestral music.

Crystal Blackwelder, Dan Spears, and Bob Rate—former members of the Hutchinson Symphony—are among the musicians leading the creation of the Salt City Orchestra, a newly established 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The group emerged after the Hutchinson Symphony disbanded a few years ago, leaving a gap in orchestral music opportunities in the area.

“We were disappointed to see the symphony go away,” Spears said. “A number of us are musicians who love orchestral music, and we felt Hutchinson deserved to have an orchestra again.”

The process of launching the Salt City Orchestra has been underway for roughly eight to nine months, involving board formation, nonprofit organization, and outreach to musicians and former patrons. The group currently has about 25 to 30 musicians on its roster, along with eight board members, and access to a mailing list of approximately 1,500 former supporters of the previous symphony.

All three founders have deep roots in local music education and performance. Spears teaches band and choir at Little River schools, while Blackwelder is a former band teacher who now gives private flute lessons. Rate previously played trumpet with the former symphony. Organizers say that commitment to education and community access will be central to the new orchestra’s mission.

“A large portion of our board members are former music educators,” Blackwelder said. “We want this to be a family-friendly orchestra and encourage young people to see what’s possible after high school.”

The Salt City Orchestra is already partnering with other local arts organizations. String players from the orchestra will perform with the choir at Hutchinson Community College for a concert in March. In addition, the group will host a public meet-and-greet on Jan. 27 as part of Classical Revolution ICT at Sandhills Brewing, featuring performances by a brass quintet and a string quartet made up of orchestra members.

Looking ahead to summer, the orchestra plans to continue a popular tradition with a free outdoor concert at Dillon Nature Center on June 19. A weather contingency date has been set for July 10. Audience members will be encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the performance.

The group currently has about 25 to 30 musicians on its roster, along with eight board members, and access to a mailing list of approximately 1,500 former supporters of the previous symphony.All three founders have deep roots in local music education and performance. Spears teaches band and choir at Little River schools, while Blackwelder is a former band teacher who now gives private flute lessons. Rate previously played trumpet with the former symphony. Organizers say that commitment to education and community access will be central to the new orchestra’s mission.“A large portion of our board members are former music educators,” Blackwelder said. “We want this to be a family-friendly orchestra and encourage young people to see what’s possible after high school.”The Salt City Orchestra is already partnering with other local arts organizations. String players from the orchestra will perform with the choir at Hutchinson Community College for a concert in March. In addition, the group will host a public meet-and-greet on Jan. 27 as part of Classical Revolution ICT at Sandhills Brewing, featuring performances by a brass quintet and a string quartet made up of orchestra members.Looking ahead to summer, the orchestra plans to continue a popular tradition with a free outdoor concert at Dillon Nature Center on June 19. A weather contingency date has been set for July 10. Audience members will be encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the performance.Organizers say the orchestra is actively seeking additional musicians, particularly string players, and are prioritizing local talent. “There is a lot of ability right here in Hutchinson,” Spears said. “We want this orchestra to reflect the community and give local musicians the opportunities they deserve.”Long-term goals include building a sustainable organization, broadening community engagement, and exploring innovative programming.
