HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The search for Hutchinson USD 308’s next superintendent is entering its final weeks, with consultants expecting the district to attract about a dozen or more applicants before the application period closes Oct. 30.
Consultants assisting the district with the search updated the USD 308 Board of Education Monday night on the process of finding a successor to Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson, who plans to retire at the end of the 2026-27 school year.
Consultants said they anticipate receiving about 12 to 15 applications, although many could arrive shortly before the deadline. Based on experience with similar searches, they said six to 10 candidates could have the credentials and experience needed for the position.
The consultants expect to narrow that group to roughly three to five candidates for the board to consider. They plan to provide the board with a report and recommendations ahead of its Nov. 9 meeting. The board would then select finalists and schedule interviews.
The district also plans to continue with an open interview process. Under that format, superintendent finalists would be publicly identified and participate in meetings with district employees and community members in addition to formal interviews with the board.
Consultants said the approach provides greater transparency and gives staff and community members an opportunity to participate in the process. Board members indicated they were comfortable continuing with the open format.
The search is taking place as USD 308 prepares for a bond election, and board members asked consultants whether the outcome could influence prospective superintendent candidates.
Consultants said candidates considering the USD 308 position will be evaluating not only the school district but also Hutchinson and the community’s support for its schools.
A successful bond proposal could be viewed by candidates as an indication that the community is willing to invest in the district. However, consultants said a failed proposal would not necessarily cause candidates to withdraw.
“Leaders aren't afraid of challenges,” one consultant told the board, adding that every school district and community faces difficult issues.
Consultants said the bond result would be one factor candidates could use to measure community support for USD 308 as they decide whether Hutchinson is the right fit.
