Richard Lee ‘Dick’ Owens, 72, of Hutchinson, died Dec. 27, 2020, at Hospice House. He was born Aug. 27, 1948, in Jacksonville, FL, the son of John and Pauline (Billings) Owens.

Dick graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1966 and served in the United States Army in Vietnam. He worked as a fabricator in aircraft manufacturing for Cessna and Global Engineering. Dick also was a representative for the Jewel Tea Company and worked as a first-responder and EMT. He was an avid K-State Wildcats and Kansas City Chiefs fan. Dick was also a member of Hutchinson Community College Quarterback Club, serving as president.

On June 21, 1985, he married Janine Ann Graham in Hutchinson. She survives.

Also surviving are sons, Steven Owens and Scott Owens (Jennifer), all of Wichita; granddaughters, Mikaela Smith (Harris), Germany, Taylor Stevenson (fiancé, Carson Wittman), Newton, and Allison Owens, Wichita.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will receive friends from 1 - 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan., 2, 2021, at Elliott Mortuary.

Friends may sign his memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday thru Saturday.

Arlys Anita Kraus, 79, of Hutchinson, died Dec. 23, 2020, at Hospice House. She was born March 17, 1941, in Protection, to Albert B. and Marjorie E. (DeMoss) Holler.

Arlys graduated from Protection High School and Wichita Business College. She was a homemaker. Arlys lived in Phoenix, AZ, for 35 years before moving to Hutchinson. She was a resident of Legend Senior Living for the past five years and absolutely loved living there. Arlys’ greatest joys in life were her family and her relationship with Christ. She was a member of CrossPoint Church.

On October 16, 1960, Arlys married Robert D. Hopkins. They divorced after 17 years of marriage. On Aug. 31, 1984, she married William E. ‘Bill’ Kraus. He died May 12, 2015.

Arlys is survived by her mother, Marjorie Holler, Hutchinson; children, Robin Sanders (Sam), Hutchinson, Allen Hopkins (Margaret), Hattiesburg, MS; grandchildren, Stephanie Doeden (Shawn), Ben Sanders (Amelia), Joey Sanders, (Erin), Sammy Sanders (Ceress), Robert and Nash Hopkins; 6 great-grandchildren; and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her father; sister, Donna James; twin brother, Arlyn Holler, and brother, Gerald Holler.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. in McPherson City Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary.

Daniel ‘Dan’ Richard Jones, 81, passed away Dec. 22, 2020, at Prairie Sunset Home, Pretty Prairie. He was born Dec. 2, 1939, in Harper, to Richard H. and Gail C. (Railsback) Jones.

Dan was a 1957 graduate of Birmingham High School, Los Angeles, CA.&nbsp; He attended Pierce Junior College, Los Angeles, CA. Dan served in the United States Army from May 1959 to February 1965, and was stationed in Korea for two years. He was an excellent welder, a farmer, and an employee of Reno County for several years. Dan was of the Baptist faith.

On July 6, 1962, he married ChongSuk ‘Cookie’ Pak, in Seoul, Korea. They shared over 56 years of marriage, prior to her death on January 20, 2019.

Dan is survived by his brother, Douglas (Darlene) Jones of Green Valley, AZ; and nephew, Dale Jones of California.

Private burial has taken place. A graveside service will be held next spring, and will be announced by Elliott Mortuary. Fort Riley Honor Guard will conduct military honors at that time.&nbsp;

Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, through Thursday, Dec. 31, at Elliott Mortuary.

Nancy M. (Whalen) Sherman was born in Hutchinson, KS on August 16, 1938 and died December 13, 2020 at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita. 

She was the daughter of Jane Anna Butler and Edward Joseph Whalen. Nancy graduated from Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Junior College. She attended the University of Kansas before her marriage to Charles Thomas “Tom” Sherman on August 6, 1959. He preceded her in death on January 16, 1991. She worked in the records office at Hutchinson Community College for many years and was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church in Hutchinson. Nancy moved to Wichita in September of 2011 and resided at Via Christi Village Ridge until her death. She enjoyed following her grandchildren in their school and sports activities. She was a die hard KU fan. She enjoyed traveling, with her favorite destination being Hawaii. 

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, husband Tom, brother Tim Whalen, and sister Mary Lou Griffin. Survivors include daughters Susan Reazin (Keith) of Wichita, Betsy Sherman of Falls Church, VA, grandchildren Erin, Sean, Caitlin, and Connor Reazin, sister Jane Miller and brother Pat Whalen of Hutchinson, and sister Anne Whalen (Don Goertz) of Joplin, MO. Private family service was held at Lumen Christi Chapel at Via Christi Village Ridge and burial took place at Memorial Park Cemetery in Hutchinson. Two former Hutchinson Blue Dragon football stars were named to the NFL All Pro teams for the 2020 season.

Cordarrelle Patterson, who led NFC returners in fan votes, made the all-star team last season, his first with the Bears. He was a two-time Pro Bowl player with the Vikings. Patterson’s 104-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last month against the Vikings gave him eight in his career, putting him in a three-way tie for most all-time.&nbsp; Patterson earned his 4th Pro Bowl after being drafted in the first round in 2013 out of Tennessee.&nbsp; Patterson graduated from HutchCC in 2012.

Alvin&nbsp;Kamara is a four-year NFL veteran who was selected in the third round (67th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Saints out of the University of Tennessee. Kamara played for Hutchinson Community College in 2014. In 2020, Kamara has played in 14 games with 10 starts and leads the Saints in both rushing and receiving with 165 carries for 777 yards (4.7 avg.) with 10 touchdowns, ranking first in the league among running backs in catches and receiving yardage with 80 grabs for 739 yards and five touchdowns. Kamara is ranked third in the NFL with 1,516 total yards from scrimmage and 83 first downs and tied for third with 15 total touchdowns. In four seasons, he has appeared in 59 regular season games with 34 starts, rushing for 3,185 yards on 650 attempts (4.9 avg.) with 37 touchdowns and has posted 323 receptions for 2,807 yards with 15 touchdowns. Kamara has become the only Saint to have four consecutive seasons of at least 1,300 total yards from scrimmage. The Atlanta native is the only Saint to be named to the Pro Bowl in each of his first four NFL seasons and the first Saint to be named in each of his first four years with the club.

Marjorie “Marj” Mugler, 86, died peacefully on December 18, 2020, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson. She was born November 20, 1934, in Longford, to Matthew and Opal (Oard) Heigele.

She married Martin Mugler on June 19, 1955. They were married 47 years, prior to his passing on May 15, 2003. They had four children: Connie, Marla, Gary and Karen. Marj’s life centered on family and she enjoyed being a full-time homemaker, happily living in the same home for 51 years, and was a part-time florist. Marj enjoyed crafting, sewing, being outside in nature with her flowers and the birds, and watching sporting events on TV. She was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church, Hutchinson.

Preceding her in death were her parents and husband, Martin.

Marj is survived by: her sister, Janice Harrington, Gardner; children, Connie Nuss (Tony), Chanhassen, MN, Marla Eriksen (Jeff), Hutchinson, Gary Mugler (Roberta), Gypsum, Karen Frizell (Jeff), Hutchinson; grandchildren, Emily Nuss Lazar (Joe), Minneapolis, MN, Michael Nuss (Lindsey Alinder), Minneapolis, MN, Whitney Eriksen Chang (Ken), Fairway, Kelsey Eriksen Barnes (Jim), Lawrence, Lindsey Eriksen Leslie (Matthew), Lawrence, Garett Mugler (Kelsey), Concordia, Mitch Mugler, Manhattan, Max Graber (Josie Taylor), Windsor, CO, Madi Graber Smith (Garrett), Roeland Park; and great-grandchildren, Joey, Audrey, and Leah Lazar, Taytum, Braylee, and Gavin Mugler, Nora and Dawson Chang, Miles Barnes, and Henry Leslie.

Wanda Pauline (Clough) Nickels Witt, 98, died Dec. 18, 2020, at 
Sterling Presbyterian Manor, Sterling.&nbsp; She was born Oct. 9, 1922, in 
Lerado, to David Everett and Allie (Lawson) Clough.&nbsp; Wanda married 
Leonard Nickels Sept. 27, 1941, at the Lerado United Methodist Church, 
Lerado.&nbsp; Leonard died Aug. 26, 1975.&nbsp; She then married Arthur Witt Jan. 
20, 1979, at the Claflin United Methodist Church, Claflin.&nbsp; Arthur died 
Nov. 3, 2004.

A 1940 valedictorian graduate of Langdon High School, Wanda continued
 her education at Hutchinson Community College, Wichita State 
University, Kansas State University, then graduating from Sterling 
College and Emporia State University, receiving her Masters degree in 
Library Science.

Wanda, a long-time resident of Claflin, moved to Alden July, 2019, 
being blessed to live in the home in which she had designed at the age 
of 96.&nbsp; She was the librarian for the Little River School District, and 
then moved to Claflin where she was librarian for the Claflin School 
District.&nbsp; Wanda was a member of the Claflin United Methodist Church, 
United Methodist Women, TOPS, and Delta Kappa Gamma.&nbsp; She enjoyed 
reading, gardening, sewing, quilting and traveling.

Survivors include one son, Jim Nickels and wife Barb of Hutchinson; 
two daughters, Judith Ray of Alden and Janelle Bennett and husband Craig
 of Alden; grandchildren, Scott Nickels of Wichita, Jeremy Bennett 
(Bridgette) of Sterling, Jaime Howard (Lindy) of Alden, Joel Bennet 
(Madyson) of Hutchinson, Jill Wilson (Cullan) of Pratt; and numerous 
great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.&nbsp; She was preceded in
 death by husbands, Leonard Nickels and Arthur Witt; son-in-law, Robert

Wanda Pauline (Clough) Nickels Witt

Stanley Ray Kjellberg, 62, passed away December 17, 2020, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born December 28, 1957, in Ness City, to Clifford and Wilma (Frank) Kjellberg.

Stan graduated from Ness City High School in 1976 and went on to attend Northwest Kansas Technical College. In 1995, he decided to make a life change and go back to school. Stan graduated from Barton County Community College in 1996, as an Occupational Therapy Assistant. After one year working in Parsons, he moved with his family to Hutchinson, and began working at the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. During the 23 years that he worked there, Stan was able to touch the lives of many, many coworkers and patients. He loved his work, especially working with older patients. Stan would talk and listen to them, and would be able to bring out stories of their lives. He touched them as people, not just patients. Stan also developed a loving, caring relationship with his work family. We will be forever grateful to Stan’s work family for the love and support shown to him and his family over his 23 years of work at the hospital, and during his illness.

Stan had many loves in his life. He loved to work out in the yard, especially with his buddy, Lucy, his favorite dog in the world. Stan would be on his knees working in the flower bed, and she would be constantly bringing him her yellow tennis ball. They both loved it. He also had a passion for the University of Kansas basketball team and the Kansas City Chiefs. The greatest loves of Stan’s life were his Lord and his family. His relationship with God grew stronger and stronger over time. One of Stan’s last texts to his wife was, “The Lord has us each step of the way. I trust in him 100%”. His other great love was for his family. On March 12, 1983, Stan married Lisa Hoberecht, at the First Christian Church, Great Bend. They shared over 37 years of marriage. During that marriage, they were blessed with two sons, Nicholas Kjellberg and Andrew Kjellberg. Stan was always a very ‘hands-on-father’. He absolutely loved the time spent with his sons, from going to the University of Kansas basketball games with Nicholas, to scouting activities with Andrew.

Stan is survived by: his wife, Lisa Kjellberg of Hutchinson; sons, Nicholas Kjellberg and Andrew Kjellberg of Hutchinson; parents, Clifford and Wilma Kjellberg of Ness City; brothers, Steven (Nola) Kjellberg of Belpre, and Larry Kjellberg of Ness City; sister, Lynette (Mike) VanAusdale of Ellis; parents-in-law, Russell and Wanda Hoberecht of Great Bend; brothers-in-law, Mark (Cheryl) Hoberecht of Great Bend, and Kirk Hoberecht of Salida, CO; and many much loved nieces, nephews, and friends.

Raymond “Ray” H. Mora, 80, of Hutchinson, died December 13, 2020, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born November 3, 1940, in Hutchinson, to Theodore and Josephine (Garcia) Mora.

Ray graduated from Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College. He was an Inspection supervisor and union leader for Kansas Gas Services. Ray loved to collect baseball cards, coached softball, and baseball. He volunteered at Hospice House of Reno County and was an active member of The Church of the Holy Cross. &nbsp;He was a strong man of Faith and Family and he has touched many people lives throughout this life and that will never be forgotten.

On August 11, 1962, Ray married Judy Ann Powell in Hutchinson. They shared 52 years together before she passed away on January 14, 2015.

He is survived by: children, Ted Mora, Las Vegas, &nbsp;Michelle DeLaney (Pat), Hutchinson, Jeff Mora (Sigrid), Michigan, Traci Luce (Bobby); grandchildren, Taryn Mora (Manuel Rodriguez), Falon Goertz (Randy), Chaz DeLaney (Mariah), Brittany Bishop (Jermaine), Logan Mora, Bree Gonzales (Neil), Dalton Luce, Devin Luce, Makayla Luce; great-grandchildren, Ariella Mora, Aiden and Cannon Whitsitt, Maliyah Bishop, Caleb Jimenez; and sisters, Martha Gentry, Rachel Ellison, Liz Mora Bonilla, and Mary Hamby.

Bob Davis is a storyteller - and an outstanding one at that.

As told in "Bob Davis - The Dream is Real" manuscript, "for 48 years, Davis told his stories on a broadcast platform touching nearly every level of competition from high school, to small college, to large university, to minor league, to major league sports. With his distinctive deep voice tinged with passion and emotion, he told a story that made us feel like we were right there.".-&nbsp;

I knew Bob when he was at KAYS radio and was named the voice of the Fort Hays Kansas State College Tigers in 1968 in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; Fort Hays was renamed Fort Hays State University in the early 70's. Let me clarify, I knew Bob....but he didn't know me.&nbsp; I was a sophomore at Fort Hays assisting various athletic teams as a student trainer and manager but when the Tigers were on the road, I'd listen to Boy on KAYS Radio describe all the action! Little did we know we had a mutual friend.&nbsp; Dennis Franz worked with Bob at KAYS and was my room mate after he returned from Vietnam to Fort Hays to renew his academic studies.&nbsp; Dennis introduced me to radio sports casting in 1985.&nbsp; My other meeting with Bob was at various Kansas Association of Broadcaster meeting trough the years.&nbsp; Our paths have crossed by association with several coaches and athletes in both Hays and Lawrence as well as sharing a couple of KAB and KSHSAA awards.&nbsp; Bob was named the Hod Humiston Award for Excellence in Broadcasting in 1991.&nbsp; I received the award in 2017.&nbsp; Bob won the Oscar Stauffer award for High School Broadcasting twice.&nbsp; I received the same honor this past spring.&nbsp; Doubt I'll win another, but maybe.&nbsp; Bob has an amazing memory which is probably what made him such a great story teller.

Elinor “Ellie” Faubion Nestler, 87, died December 9, 2020, at Wesley Towers, Thorne Care Center, Hutchinson, KS. She was born on March 3, 1933, in Kansas City, MO to Raymond and Francis (Haseltine) Faubion.

Ellie graduated from Atchison High School in 1951, and Kansas State College in 1955, with a degree in Home Economics and Journalism. While in college, she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. Shortly after graduating from college, she married her high school and college sweetheart, Carl Nestler, on June 12, 1955. They shared 63 years of marriage, before his death on February 1, 2019.

Elinor and Carl spent 22 years traveling the U.S., Europe, and Asia, while Carl was an officer in the U.S. Army. After Carl retired, the family moved to Hutchinson in 1977. Ellie spent most of her time as a homemaker, raising her boys, Greg and Dave, and took advantage of being a military housewife to travel Europe and Asia, building an extensive collection of knickknacks and collectibles.

While in Hutchinson, she was active in PEO Chapter EK, and worked many years at the Kansas State Fair in the information booth, as well as volunteering in the Hutchinson Hospital Gift Shop. Ellie was an accomplished counted cross-stitcher, having won several blue ribbons at the Kansas State Fair. Ellie also enjoyed searching garage sales and flea markets for the next great treasure and enjoyed collecting Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls and collectibles. Over the years, Ellie built up one of the larger Raggedy Ann and Andy collections in the Midwest and was affectionately known by her Raggedy friends as “Raggedy Ellie”.

Ellie is survived by: her sister, Jane Eriksen of Hutchinson; son, Greg Nestler (Lisa) of Prairie Village, KS; and son, Dave Nestler (Julie) of Salem, SC; grandchildren, Michael and Jennifer (Dave’s children), and Matthew and Sara (Greg’s children); and nieces and nephews, Ray Sprinkle (Kim); Mike Sprinkle (Colleen), Steve Sprinkle (Leslie), Jeff Eriksen (Marla), and Jana Voth (Ned).

She was preceded in death by: her husband; parents; sister, Jean Sprinkle; and brothers-in-law, Chuck Sprinkle and John Eriksen.

Ruth Evelyn Huffman, 98, of Hutchinson, died December 11, 2020, at Diversicare of Hutchinson. She was born May 24, 1922, in McKracken, to James and Ina (Fitzgerald) Brenner.

Ruth graduated from LaCrosse High School followed by Salt City Business College. She worked for Koeppen Electric and the City of Hutchinson as a secretary and treasurer. Ruth belonged to the Altar Society at Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson, where she was a member.

On October 9, 1943, she married Herman Koeppen, in Russell. He passed away on January 22, 1964. On March 3, 1978, Ruth was married to Verling Huffman, in Hutchinson. He passed away on August 15, 2007.

She is survived by: sons, Norman Koeppen (Pat), Canon City, CO, and Donald Koeppen, Hutchinson; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Ruth was preceded in death by: her parents; husbands, Herman Koeppen and Verling Huffman; brother, Earl Brenner; and sister, Marie Brack.

Cremation has taken place. Services will be announced at a later date.

Ruth Evelyn Huffman | 1922 - 2020 |

CHICAGO — Wes Hoyt, chief operating officer for Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System (HRHS), has been appointed to the Council of Regents, the legislative body of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). The Council of Regents serves as the vital link between ACHE and members by approving governance and membership regulations as well as promoting the organization’s programs, services and activities within their respective areas.

Hoyt is board certified in healthcare management as an ACHE Fellow since 2005 and has been a member of the organization since 2001. HUTCHINSON, Kan. – At the December meeting, the Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees wrapped up its calendar year with a brief meeting.

Board chair Bob Snyder recognized the faculty, staff and students for their work in maintaining in-person classes for the duration of the fall semester.&nbsp;

For fiscal year 2020-2021 the Board approved the Master Agreement with the Hutchinson National Faculty Association which includes a 1.5% increase on base salary and $30 per month increase for Board Benefits. A salary increase for classified and administrative staff based on performance, market value and scope of responsibility, with the average increase not to exceed 1.5%, and a $30 per month increase in the Board Benefit was also approved for classified and administrative staff. In addition, the Board approved the president’s contract with the same base salary and Board Benefit adjustments as staff and administration.

The next meeting will be Thursday, January 14.&nbsp; The meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. in the Shears Technology Center Justice Theater. The public is invited to attend.

HutchCC BOT approves contracts

Deborah Renee (Rogers) Fuller, 56, died on December 9, 2020 after a four month, brief but courageous fight against esophageal cancer. She passed away with her family and friends by her side in Hutchinson, KS.

Debbie was born July 20, 1964, in Wichita, KS, the daughter of Leland Gifford Jr and Barbara (Weide) Zelenka. She graduated from Buhler High School and Hutchinson Community College. Debbie was employed at Good Samaritan Society-Hutchinson Village as a Registered Nurse for 25 years, working under many different titles. She retired from Good Samaritan in July of 2019 and moved to Buda, TX with her fiancé Enos Clifford Jackson and two young children A’Mauri and A’Myiah Wilson. In Texas, Debbie initially focused on being a stay-at-home mom, but eventually felt the urge to get back to helping others through her nursing career. She began working as a pediatric home health nurse for Aveanna Home Health Care in early 2020.

Debbie was a kind, sweet, hardworking, strong and caring person, which was evident in both her personal life and her career. Throughout all the obstacles she faced, she could still be silly and smile through the storm, as well as, help others to do the same. Debbie was known for her love of water, swimming and the ocean. She also enjoyed dancing and music. She would be the first one to get up and dance, while pulling others up along with her. Debbie’s life was filled with joy as a result of her children and grandchildren. She loved being a mother and grandmother and would often take her “babies” up to her job at Good Sam, parading them around for the staff and residents. Debbie had a “go with the flow” personality and believed in living life to fullest, while sharing it with the one’s she loved the most.

Debbie was preceded in death by her parents; her nephew Benjamin “Noah” Grimm; and her son, Adonis Loudermilk.

Survivors include her fiancé Enos Clifford Jackson; her children, Meshia (Robert) Hill of Hutchinson, KS; Kelsey (Brian) Bernard of Wichita, KS; Tara Loudermilk, A’Mauri Wilson and A’Myiah Wilson all of Hutchinson, KS; 8 grandchildren, A’Treal Loudermilk, Jalen Bernard, Isaiah Gonzales, Kai’son Bernard, Nariyah Gonzales, JaLeah Loudermilk, Aria Bernard and Declan Johnson; three siblings, Pam Grimm, Shawna Rogers and Jeffrey Rogers (Mollie) and many other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Our loving sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend, Marlita Dawn Whipple, age 64, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 9, 2020, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She was born May 12, 1956 in Ness City, Kansas to Earl and Verna Whipple.

Marlita grew up in Stafford, Kansas, the oldest of five siblings. She graduated from Stafford High School in 1974. Afterwards, she attended Adela Hale Business College in Hutchinson, Kansas. She worked for Collingwood Grain before moving to Wichita. Over the years, Marlita did office work for various companies including Koch Industries and Purina. Later on, she moved to Oklahoma City where she was employed with Caliber Home Loans Mortgage Company as a Cash Operations Specialist. Throughout her professional life, she touched many people and developed many lasting friendships.

Marlita had a true love of God and family. Being the oldest sibling, Marlita was our information hub, which suited her well as she enjoyed talking on the phone. She was also a good listener. She took a genuine interest in her loved ones’ daily lives. She liked to read and watch movies. Marlita loved playing cards and board games with friends and relatives. She also enjoyed following college and professional football and basketball teams. 

Marlita was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Verna Whipple. 

She is survived by: sister, Earlene Byler (Doug) of Mustang, OK; brother, Douglas Whipple (Holly) of Apache Junction, AZ; brother, Dan Whipple of Oklahoma City, OK; her sister, Shirley Humes (Todd) of Hutchinson, KS; six nieces and nephews, Josh, Jeremy, and Justin Byler, Dena Whipple, Tori and Austin Humes; and six great nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held sometime in the future when it is safe to do so.

Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the National Kidney Foundation.

Shelli Rae Blackburn, 61, passed away December 8, 2020, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born October 20, 1959, in Hutchinson, to Raymond and Elaine (Simpson) King.

Shelli graduated from Nickerson High School early in 1977, to attend Hutchinson Community College. For several years, she was secretary at St. Teresa's Catholic Church, Hutchinson, prior to working as a pharmacy technician at Ashcraft Pharmacy, South Hutchinson. Shelli was a master of Wheel of Fortune, read plenty of romance novels, enjoyed watching the University of Kansas basketball team, doing crossword puzzles, Sudoku, camping with her family, and cultivating flowers. Her chocolate chip cookies developed cult status among family and friends.

Shelli was unwavering in her nurturing devotion to those she loved – a distinction that included many, and always had room for one more. She was the number one fan for many Hutchinson area bands – musical efforts first of her brother, Brent, and husband, Mike, and ultimately of her sons, Justin and Brandon. Suffering many and impossibly loud band rehearsals, Shelli became a mother to the many who passed her doorstep and, moreover, a friend. Behind her easy smile and sparkling eyes resided a searching and creative mind, always eager to engage, to solve, to cultivate, while betraying just enough mischief.

On February 2, 1980, she married Michael Linn Blackburn, at the Mitchell Chapel United Methodist Church, Hutchinson. They shared over 40 years of marriage.

Shelli is survived by her husband, Michael Blackburn of South Hutchinson; sons, Justin (April Mok) Blackburn of Alton, IL, and Brandon (Jenny) Blackburn of Naples, FL; and brother, Brent (Sandy) King of South Hutchinson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Bruce King.

Cremation has taken place. Celebration of Life gathering will be held at a future date.

Marcia Gae Cooper, 83, died December 8, 2020, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson. She was born March 17, 1937, in Neodesha, Kansas, to Wilborn and Muriel Ellen (Sale) Grokett.

Marcia graduated from Neodesha High School, and Emporia State Teachers College.&nbsp; She was a homemaker. Marcia enjoyed tending to her flowers, playing the violin and watching KU basketball.&nbsp; She played the violin with the Hutchinson Symphony for many years and ‘The String Group’. Marcia was a member of D.A.R. and PEO Chapter BL. She enjoyed volunteering as a longtime docent at the Cosmosphere International SciEd Center and Space Museum (formerly the Kansas Cosmosphere). &nbsp;&nbsp;

Christmas was Marcia’s favorite time of the year. She enjoyed decorating her entire house for the holidays and wearing Christmas sweaters.&nbsp; Marcia and Dick’s annual Christmas Eve party was a tradition for friends and family for many, many years. This was second though to celebrating the season with family, especially her four grandchildren.

On August 23, 1963, she married Richard ‘Dick’ Cooper at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church in Dallas, TX. They shared 56 years of marriage before his death December 13, 2019.

She was born March 17, 1937, in Neodesha, Kansas, to Wilborn and Muriel Ellen (Sale) Grokett.Marcia graduated from Neodesha High School, and Emporia State Teachers College.&nbsp; She was a homemaker. Marcia enjoyed tending to her flowers, playing the violin and watching KU basketball.&nbsp; She played the violin with the Hutchinson Symphony for many years and ‘The String Group’. Marcia was a member of D.A.R. and PEO Chapter BL. She enjoyed volunteering as a longtime docent at the Cosmosphere International SciEd Center and Space Museum (formerly the Kansas Cosmosphere). &nbsp;&nbsp;Christmas was Marcia’s favorite time of the year. She enjoyed decorating her entire house for the holidays and wearing Christmas sweaters.&nbsp; Marcia and Dick’s annual Christmas Eve party was a tradition for friends and family for many, many years. This was second though to celebrating the season with family, especially her four grandchildren.On August 23, 1963, she married Richard ‘Dick’ Cooper at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church in Dallas, TX. Ileine Hoefer, 83, of Hutchinson, died December 5, 2020, at Hospice House. She was born June 12, 1937, in Kingman, to Earl and Dorothy (Pipkin) Day.

Ileine was a graduate of Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College. She worked in medical records at the Reno County Health Department. Ileine was a member of Westside Baptist Church.

On January 24, 1958, she married Phillip Hoefer, in Hutchinson. They shared 49 years together before he passed away on November 30, 2006.

Ileine is survived by sons, Robbin Hoefer (Debbie), Scott Hoefer (Brooke), both of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Nathaniel, Eric, Brandon, Ryan, and Jade Hoefer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Phil Hoefer; brother, Melvin Day; and granddaughter, Elyse B. Hoefer.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, December 21, 2020, at Westside Baptist Church, with Pastor Tim Adrian officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Burial Park. Ileine Hoefer | 1937 - 2020 |

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Selected among three outstanding youth, Sadye Patterson has been named the 2021 Youth of the Year by Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson according to a release from the agency.

As the local Youth of the Year, Patterson will serve as an ambassador for all teens in the local Club. She will receive a $1,000 college scholarship thanks to Heartland Credit Union and will compete in the Kansas Youth of the Year competition next spring. Patterson is a junior at Hutchinson High School. 

She has been a Club member for 12 years and works as a Vision Leader at the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs. She is a Junior Rotarian and active in her church youth group and choir. At school she plays soccer, runs cross country, leads in student council, is a Briny Bird and an honor roll student. 

Bri Mora and Catelyn Washington were each named as runners up. Mattheu Richards, a sophomore at Hutchinson High School, was recognized as the Junior Youth of the Year.

Gary Allen Rich, 76, died Thursday, December 3, 2020, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born December 14, 1943, in Sterling, to Marion Edwin and Vivian (Miller) Rich.

Gary was a graduate of Nickerson High School and Salt City Business College. He was a member of Grace Bible Church.

Gary was a businessman, working many years for Collins Bus before purchasing Fairview Service. He was owner for 14 years, continuing to work part-time until February of this year.

On September 20, 1964, he married Betty JoAnn Regier at Buhler Mennonite Church. His wife Betty, of over 56 years of marriage, survives. Also surviving are: children, Scott and wife Kathy, Amy and husband Chad Gilbert, all of Hutchinson; siblings, Joyce and husband John Welker of South Hutchinson, and Marvin Rich and wife Jane of Sterling; five grandchildren, Matthew Rich and wife Celestia, Mason Rich, William Rich, Cole Gilbert, and Corey Gilbert; and one niece and three nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation has taken place. There are no services planned at this time.

Ronald ‘Ron’ Raymond Kern, 65, passed away December 1, 2020, due to complications from Covid-19. He was born November 25, 1955, in Hutchinson, to Raymond George and Norma Jean (Ford) Kern.

Ron was a 1973 graduate of Hutchinson High School. He was a member of Church of the Holy Cross, Hutchinson. Hutchinson was always home to Ron. He helped bring pride to his hometown through his athleticism. As a young swimmer, Ron set several Missouri Valley Amateur Athletic Union records throughout his high school career. Upon his signing with the University of Kansas, the swim coach acknowledged that Ron had the fastest time in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle ever swum by a high school student in the state of Kansas.

Ron was an avid sports fan of Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons, the National Junior College Athletic Association Basketball Tournament, University of Kansas Jayhawks, and Kansas State Wildcats.

He is survived by siblings, Jerry (Nance) Kern of Mason, OH, Barbara (Jim) Pearson of Grove OK, Linda Swank of Lawrence, KS, Pat (Sam) Banker of Ozawkie, KS, Mary Beth Hartwell of Deltaville, VA, and Connie (Rob) Kimpler of Wichita, KS; maternal aunts, Ruth Ann Spitzer, Kathy Young, and Debbie Ford, all of Hutchinson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ron was preceded in death by his loving parents, Raymond and Norma Kern.

The family wishes to thank all those who cared for him in Hutchinson, McPherson Health and Rehab, as well as end-of-life support by caregivers of Good Shepherd Hospice.

Jamie Lynn Shuler, 41, died November 30, 2020, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born March 24, 1979, in Hutchinson, to Jerry Lynn and Cathy L. (Field) Hicks.

Jamie graduated from Buhler High School in 1997. She earned her LPN from Hutchinson Community College, and RN from Butler Community College. Jamie loved being a nurse, and working at long-term care facilities. For the past five years, she was a nursing instructor at Hutchinson Community College. Jamie enjoyed reading, going for drives, and loved all animals. She attended Westside Baptist Church, Hutchinson. Jamie’s number one priority was her beautiful, four-year-old daughter, Kaitlyn Rose.

On September 22, 2015, she married Aron Michael Shuler at Chapel of the Flowers, Las Vegas, NV.

Jamie is survived by husband, Aron Shuler, DVM; daughter, Kaitlyn Rose Shuler; mother, Cathy Hicks, all of Hutchinson; brother, Heath Hicks (Kellie) of Pleasanton, TX; nephews, Kaden and Parker Hicks; in-laws, Max and Irmie Shuler of Hutchinson; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; sisters-of-the-heart, Tammy Jane Hartley of Miltonvale, KS, and Jennifer Desmond of Hutchinson; nephews and nieces-of-the-heart, Lance Hartley, Kaury and Chalasea Stout, and Jessica Pelkey.

Matthew D. Halula, 61, died on December 1, 2020 at his home in Wichita, KS. He was born November 16, 1959 in Kansas City, KS, the son of John and Sharon (Moles) Halula.

Matt graduated from Trinity High School in 1978 and attended Hutchinson Community College and Washburn University. He worked at Winchester Packing and later he was a general contractor for over 30 years. Matt was a math genius and a devoted Kansas City Chiefs fan and a proud football player for the Trinity Catholic High School football team where they went 11-1 in 1977.

Matt was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother Brian Halula.
