NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Javonte Williams rushed for two touchdowns and the Denver Broncos triumphed in coach Sean Payton's return to New Orleans, beating the banged-up and reeling Saints 33-10. Bo Nix passed for 164 yards and ran for 75 yards for Denver. The Broncos outgained New Orleans 389 yards to 271 while sending the Saints to their fifth straight defeat. Rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler made his second straight start for New Orleans and his lack of experience was exacerbated by injuries all across the the offense. The Saints fell to 2-5, while the Broncos improved to 4-3.

Virginia basketball coach Tony Bennett is retiring effective immediately. The program said Thursday that Bennett will announce his retirement at a news conference Friday. No reasons were given for Bennett's abrupt departure less than three weeks before the start of the season. The 55-year-old Bennett led the Cavaliers to the national title in 2019. In his 15 seasons as the coach in Charlottesville, he made 10 NCAA Tournament appearances. He just signed an extension in June to keep him in the job through at least 2030.

Patriots to practice on Winston Churchill's old stomping grounds in London

LONDON (AP) — A London game is more than just a typical road trip for NFL teams. It's a chance to learn about local history, too. In fact, the New England Patriots and Jacksonville Jaguars who play Sunday at Wembley Stadium don't even need to leave their practice facilities to do so. The Patriots will train Friday at the exclusive Harrow School whose most famous alumni is Winston Churchill. Farther out in the countryside the Jaguars use a practice field that is nearly on top of a maze of World War II air raid shelters.

Justin Fields says he hasn't played well enough for Steelers to not consider Russell Wilson at QB

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields seems to be at peace with the idea of getting benched in favor of Russell Wilson. While Fields believes he's done some positive things during Pittsburgh's 4-2 start, he isn't sure his performance produced a compelling enough case to coach Mike Tomlin that Fields should remain the starter even when Wilson returned to full health. Wilson's calf injury has healed and Tomlin has said the nine-time Pro Bowler is in consideration to start. Fields says he will focus on trying to get better and helping Wilson however he can if Wilson gets the call against the New York Jets.

Browns announce plans to move from their lakefront stadium since 1999 to dome in the suburbs

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns are moving out of their lakefront home. The team officially announced plans to leave their 25-year-old stadium on the shores of Lake Erie when the lease expires in 2028 and move to a domed facility in suburban Brook Park despite the city's efforts to keep it in Cleveland. Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb says he met with Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslem, who announced their intent to relocate the NFL team to suburban Brook Park despite the city's efforts to keep it in Cleveland. The Haslams explored several possible sites and considered renovating their current home before deciding the move was their best option.

McPHERSON, KANSAS –&nbsp;The center of Bulldog athletic activity has a new name – Holman Fieldhouse. The renaming marks the completion of a major renovation and addition to the former Sport Center and honors the family that supported the expansion project.

In 2022, McPherson College announced the first-ever seven-figure gift made to Bulldog Athletics by Craig and Karen Holman of McPherson. The gift totaled more than $1 million for the expansion and remodeling of the Sport Center as part of the&nbsp;Building Community&nbsp;comprehensive fundraising campaign.

The athletic expansion and renovation project added over 5,200 square feet to the former Sport Center facility and remodeled another 5,000 square of existing space. The expansion included an all-new athletic training room with treatment tables, taping stations, four whirlpools, an exam room, and three offices. It also more than doubled the size of the existing weight room and includes brand-new state-of-the-art weight training machines and equipment. The renovation added lockers to the football locker room, increased storage space, and updated the weight room. The project was completed in February.

“It’s exciting to have this state-of-the-art athletic facility available for our students when we are competing to win in every sport,” said McPherson College President Michael Schneider. “I am grateful to the Holmans for their long-time support of Bulldog athletics and their significant support for future student-athletes.”

Craig and the couple’s children are McPherson College graduates. While at McPherson College, Craig was an outstanding tennis player. He won conference singles, was District 10 singles championships three times, and was selected for the all-conference team all four years. He serves the McPherson community as a financial advisor, owning an Ameriprise Financial practice. Craig is a McPherson College Board of Trustees member and serves as a volunteer assistant coach for the Bulldog tennis teams. Karen has served the community as a registered nurse and helped instruct those seeking to become licensed practical nurses. She is a volunteer at Lincoln Elementary and plays the violin.

The Holman family has been loyal supporters of McPherson area tennis, particularly the Bulldog tennis program funding the Holman Family Tennis Courts on campus.

“The expansion and renovation of our athletic facilities has already paid great dividends in recruiting and is a tremendous asset to our current student-athletes and coaches,” said Josh Daume, McPherson College athletic director. “This has greatly enhanced the student-athlete experience at McPherson College, and we are truly thankful for the generosity of the Holman family in making this project a reality.”&nbsp;

As part of the Homecoming Campus Tour on Saturday, October 19, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., the Holmans will be in the main lobby of Holman Fieldhouse to visit with alumni and community members. Visitors can also view the renovations to Holman Fieldhouse at that time.

McPherson College athletic facility gets new name

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Central Christian School football team is one win away from locking up the district title, and the Cougars can accomplish that feat on Friday night at Pretty Prairie.

"It's a huge step for us," head coach Matt Barnett said. "I mean these guys have been working hard for the last couple of years here to really put themselves in this situation, so it's really the guys that have put that work in, and we're starting to see the rewards of that, so it's a nice thing to see."

The Cougars started the season with a 54-50 loss to Sunrise Academy, but since then CCS has won five straight games.&nbsp;

"It was definitely a tough test for us to have in the first game," Barnett said. "We also learned a lot from that game and we've made some changes moving forward, so we actually got better from it."

CCS has district wins over Fairfield (46-6) and Argonia-Attica (28-12) with two games to go. The Cougars hold a 0.5 game lead on Argonia-Attica, but with a win on Friday, the Cougars would hold any possible tiebreaker scenario.

The offense has put up 45 or more points in five of the six games, and are averaging 45.3 points. Three of the five wins have come via the 45-point mercy rule.

"Coach Barnett, my brother actually, he's the offensive coordinator and he's really had them going this year," Barnett said. "We've had a lot of different weapons, especially when we stay healthy. Nathan Reed at quarterback is such a solid guy to have at the helm and kind of controlling things out there. We've had good running from our backfield with Ry Kooiman being able to find some holes, and that all stems from seniors that came back on the line. We've had the best offensive line that we've had as long as I've been there for sure, we've been doing a really good job. Piercen Huff is back, he had been out injured for the first part of the season, so with him being healthy now that gives us a great weapon at the slot. Brody Froese, another senior at our wide receiver position has become a weapon for us, as well."

The defense has also been stout, allowing just 13 points per game.

"We moved some guys around a little bit," Barnett said. "We've got some great senior leadership and that really helps us out defensively. Konnor Sullivan played a lot of defensive line for us, but we've got him playing some mike linebacker and he's doing such a good job of leading the team out there. We've just had good play all around, from the defensive line, keeping guys off of our linebackers. Guys like Keaton Miller, who has been dominant up front. Jayden Linscheid is so quick and hard to deal with, kind of gives people fits. Kaleb Sullivan really has had a couple of his best games of his career, he's another senior that is kind of coming into his own, figuring things out."

CCS will close the regular season with a home game against Norwich on Oct. 25.

🏈 CCS can lock up district title Friday

The Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team scored two goals 1 minute, 53 second apart in the first half and then let the defense take over in a huge KJCCC home test against the Barton Cougars on Wednesday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The No. 16-ranked Blue Dragons produced a defensive masterpiece against the relentless speed of the Cougars and earned a 2-0 victory that clinched a Region 6 home first-round playoff game in November.

Now 5-0-1 in their last six games, the Blue Dragons improved to 9-2-4 overall and 8-2-4 (28 points) in the KJCCC. Now tied for third in the league with Cowley, the Blue Dragons have a 10-point lead over Barton (7-5-3, 5-5-3 – 18 points – KJCCC) with two games to play. Hutchinson travels to KJCCC leader and seventh-ranked Kansas City at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons produced their seventh overall shutout of the season and fourth-straight shutout on Wednesday – which is the 15th time in program history to post at least four consecutive shutouts.

Sophomore goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2024-25/bios/slothower_karsyn_oxul">Karsyn Slothower</a>&nbsp;(4-2-3) had eight saves in her third shutout of the season.

Only under true duress once in the contest, the Blue Dragon defensive line of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2024-25/bios/pokrandt_anastasia_tzef">Anastasia Pokrandt</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2024-25/bios/artmann_kira_vs31">Kira Artmann</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2024-25/bios/stefanek_nancy_la8f">Nancy Stefanek</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2024-25/bios/garrison_teagan_6rwz">Teagan Garrison</a>, with help from midfielders,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2024-25/bios/gomes_lorena_m4pf">Lorena Gomes</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2024-25/bios/monk_kaylee_ibka">Kaylee Monk</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2024-25/bios/edwards_kaitlyn_flm0">Kaitlyn Edwards</a>, turned in one of their top overall defensive performances of the season.

The Cougars out-shot the Blue Dragon 20-7 overall, including 14-0 in the second half as Hutchinson protected its 2-0 halftime cushion.

The Blue Dragons had to defend nine Barton corner kicks and four defensive zone direct kicks. Only once did the Dragons have to defend a scramble right in front of the goal.

Hutchinson preserved a 0-0 tie in the in the 22nd minute when Barton's Leticia Quadros delivered a free kick that Slothower deflected for a save. With the ball still loose in the box, Adna Mahdi had a nearly wide-open net, but Artmann legally blocked down the shot and the Dragons cleared the ball without further Barton shot attempts in that sequence.

The Blue Dragon offense got going about five minutes later as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2024-25/bios/marx_katharina_gwqa">Katharina Marx</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2024-25/bios/rogers_haley_tzll">Haley Rogers</a>&nbsp;both scored with help from the other within a span of 1:53 of the first half.

The first goal was set up by a strong run to the next from the right corner by Rogers, whose deft touch pass to Marx was hammered into the upper left corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead with 18:11 remaining in the half. That was Marx's ninth goal of the season.

Less than two minutes later, Marx sent a low cross into the box that was initially deflected by Barton goalkeeper Mio Tanaka. Rogers was right there to blast home the rebound and give the Blue Dragons a 2-0 lead with 16:18 to play in the first half. Rogers scored her team-high 12th goal of the season.

Slothower became the sixth Blue Dragon goalkeeper to register at least 10 career shutouts and her 16th career win moves her into seventh place on that Blue Dragon career goalkeeper list.

The Dragons are now 21-7-5 all-time against Barton.

⚽ Dragons produce defensive gem in shutout of Cougars

For the third time this season, the No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College football team earned an NJCAA National Player of the Week award.

After posting one of the top return days in Blue Dragon Football history, freshman return specialist&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2024-25/bios/gouldsby_kordell_9ht9">Kordell Gouldsby</a>&nbsp;was named the Week 8 Division I NJCAA Football Special Teams National Player of the week.

Gouldsby played a huge role in Hutchinson's 48-7 victory over Independence last Saturday at Shulthis Stadium, accounting for 231 all-purpose yards.

The freshman return specialist from Tulsa, Oklahoma, had eight punt returns for 148 yards, including a 50-yard return for a touchdown in the third quarter. He is the first Blue Dragon since Tyrell Reed Jr. in 2023 to return a punt for a touchdown.

Gouldsby also had 83 yards on two Independence kickoffs.

Gouldsby is the Jayhawk Conference leader in both punt returns (17.9 yards per return) and kickoff returns (33.6 yards per return).

Gouldsby joins Blue Dragon place kicker&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2024-25/bios/burger_nestus_ljhj">Nestus Burger</a>&nbsp;as Blue Dragons to win Special Teams national honors. He is the first Blue Dragon return specialist to capture national weekly honors since Tre Richardson won the award twice last season.

🏈 Gouldsby named NJCAA Special Teams POW

For the second time in her Blue Dragon career, Hutchinson Community College sophomore goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2024-25/bios/slothower_karsyn_oxul">Karsyn Slothower</a>&nbsp;was named the NJCAA Division I Women's Soccer National Goalkeeper of the Week on Wednesday.

In her only game last week, Slothower was instrumental to leading the No. 16 Blue Dragons to a 0-0 draw with No. 8 Butler last Wednesday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

Slothower, a sophomore from Maize, made 11 saves against the Grizzlies, including four diving saves to keep the game scoreless.

Slothower's performance against Butler gives her 146 career saves, which moved her past Carly McArthur (140) into second place on the Blue Dragons career saves list. This was also the second time Slothower surpassed the 10-save mark in a single game.

NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams says she had a benign branchial cyst "the size of a small grapefruit" removed from her neck and "all is OK." The retired tennis star posted Wednesday on social media that she found a lump on her neck in May, had an MRI exam, and was told she didn't need to get it removed if she didn't want to. So she didn't then, "but it kept growing," Williams wrote. After more tests, including a biopsy that was negative for cancer, Williams said, her doctors said she should have a procedure. Williams turned 43 last month.

The point guard also had an assist, a steal and a block in his first appearance since Jan. 14, 2022. Ball underwent a cartilage and meniscus transplant in his left knee last year after several procedures failed to fix his injury. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt says he has no issue with kicker Harrison Butker forming a political action committee designed to encourage Christians to vote for "traditional values." Butker announced his UPRIGHT PAC last weekend. Hunt says the Chiefs have players "on both sides of the political spectrum" and he supports efforts to "make a difference." The Hunt family has supported a group urging Missouri voters to reject a ballot measure that would overturn a near-total ban on abortion in the state. Butker drew attention earlier this year for a commencement speech at a private Catholic college.

The NCAA football rules committee has issued guidance to close a loophole that allowed second-ranked Oregon to exploit an illegal substitution penalty late in its victory over Ohio State to take time off the clock. With Ohio State driving on its final possession of the game and just seconds left, Oregon was flagged for having too many defenders on the field. While the Buckeyes gained 5 yards, the move took four seconds off the clock and Ohio State didn't have time to call a timeout for a potential game-winning field goal. The NCAA coordinator of football officials says in a statement the new guidance looks to "take away any gain for the defense" from committing an intentional penalty.

Adams was limited at the Jets' walkthrough practice session, but said he'll be able to play against the Steelers. 🏈 Week 8 KJCCC, KCAC, MIAA schedule

Three races as a Blue Dragon runner and three victories for Hutchinson Community College women’s cross country runner Faith Jepchirchir.

Now the Blue Dragon freshman earned her third KJCCC Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week award, which was announced on Tuesday.

The only thing that Jepchirchir hasn’t tripled up on is school records, but she did that for the second time this season after winning the Region 6 Preview at the Kansas Veterans Home on Saturday in Winfield.

Jepchirchir posted a school-record time of 16 minutes, 55.33 seconds over 5,000 meters on Saturday to lead the Blue Dragon women on the same course where the 2024 Region 6 Championships will be contested on Friday, October 25.

The Blue Dragon freshman is the first Blue Dragon runner in program history to win three races in one season. She was the first to break the 18-minute barrier two weeks ago at the Chili Pepper Festival. Now 

Jepchirchir is the first Blue Dragon to break the 17-minute barrier.

Jepchirchir is also a two-time NJCAA National Runner of the Week, another first for a Blue Dragon cross country runner, female or male.

👟 Jepchirchir wins third weekly honor

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico — Freshman Jack Northgraves and sophomore Charlie Box both shot a team-low 1-over 72 on Tuesday to lead the No. 2-ranked Hutchinson Community College in the final round of the Herb Wimberly Memorial hosted by New Mexico State University.

In a field mixed with NCAA Division I and NJCAA Division I programs, the Blue Dragons finished eighth in the 15-team field with a 54-hole total of 868 at the Par-71 University Golf Course.

The Dragons shot a 7-over 291 on Tuesday, counting scores from Northgraves (72), Box (72), Louis Ross (73) and David Razinskas (74).

New Mexico State won the team title with a score of 825 (-27). The Aggie shot 8-under 276 on Tuesday. NJCAA No. 1 Midland College was second at 842 (-10). The Chapparals fired a 281 on Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons were the fifth-highest NJCAA finisher in the tournament. Odessa (285-858) placed fifth, while New Mexico Junior College (281-866) and South Mountain (278-866) tied for sixth.

Box was the low Blue Dragon individual, tying for 16th 1-over 214. Box had rounds of 71, 71 and 72 in the tournament.

Northgraves tied for 23rd individually with a 54-hole total of 2-over 215. Northgraves had rounds of 73, 70 and 72.

Ross tied for 43rd at 219 (75-71-73). Razinskas finished tied for 63rd at 225 (75-76-74). Freshman Jaydon Carruthers finished tied for 59th at 224. Carruthers closed with a 78 on Tuesday after rounds of 72 and 74 on Monday.

The Blue Dragons will close out the 2024 fall season next Thursday and Friday, October 24-25 at the NJCAA National Preview at Sand Creek Station in Newton.

⛳ Dragons finish 8th at Wimberly Memorial

After posting the seventh-most single-game all-purpose yards in program history, Hutchinson Community College freshman return specialist Kordell Gouldsby became the sixth Blue Dragon to earn KJCCC Football Player of the Week honors on Tuesday.

Gouldsby was named the Week 7 KJCCC Special Teams Player of the Week after the No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons defeated Independence 48-7 on Saturday in Independence.

Gouldsby played a huge role in Hutchinson’s, accounting for 231 all-purpose yards.

He is the second Blue Dragon this season to win league Special Team Player of the Week honors, joining kicker Nestus Burger.

🏈 Gouldsby wins weekly honor

Following one of her best single-game performances of her Blue Dragon career, Hutchinson Community College sophomore Karsyn Slothower was named the KJCCC Division I Goalkeeper of the Week for the first time this season.

Slothower’s performance against Butler gives her 146 career saves, which moved her past Carly McArthur (140) into second place on the Blue Dragons career saves list. This was also the second time Slothower surpassed the 10-save mark in a single game.

This is the second-straight week a Blue Dragon goalkeeper earned KJCCC weekly honors. Last week, freshman Marina Lopez earned conference honors. Slothower is the fourth Blue Dragon this season to win conference honors.

Slothower has now won four KJCCC Goalkeeper of the Week awards in her Blue Dragon career.

Rodgers and Adams were teammates in Green Bay for eight seasons before the wide receiver was traded to Las Vegas in 2022.

The emails went directly to Xargay's account which was a bit unnerving for the couple. The two-time MVP said she notified the team and they escalated it to security. Stewart said Xargay has filed a complaint with police at the advice of the team and security. Stewart had a chance to win Game 1 of the WNBA Finals, but missed one of two free throws with 0.8 seconds left in regulation and then a potential tying layup at the overtime buzzer.

ATLANTA (AP) — Tom Brady's purchase of a minority stake in the Las Vegas Raiders has been approved by NFL team owners. The seven-time Super Bowl champion who played 23 seasons with the Patriots and Buccaneers takes approximately 5% control of the Raiders. Brady needed to receive 24 of 32 votes, which happened Tuesday at the league's annual fall meeting. The 47-year-old Brady can't come of out retirement and play again unless he sells his stake in the team. It took owners 17 months to approve the deal because of concerns Brady was receiving too much of a discount from Raiders majority owner Mark Davis.

Ohtani and Lindor leading the way as Dodgers-Mets NLCS shifts to NYC for Game 3 on Wednesday

NEW YORK (AP) — Everything starts with Shohei Ohtani and Francisco Lindor in this National League Championship Series. Right at the top of the lineup. Expected to run 1-2 in NL MVP voting, both leadoff batters have already made a big impact early in their playoff showdown between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets. Mexico is struggling to stamp out a homophobic soccer chant ahead of the World Cup

GUADALAJARA, México (AP) — Guadalajara is the capital of a Mexican state that is home to tequila and Mariachi music. It is also considered the birthplace of a less flattering tradition — a homophobic soccer chant that has cost Mexico hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines over the past two decades. It came as no surprise that the chant, a one-word slur that literally means male prostitute in Spanish, was heard from the crowd on Tuesday night when Mexico hosted the United States in a friendly match. Multiple sanctions from FIFA and campaigns by Mexican soccer officials to educate fans have not been able to stamp it out.

Bills acquire wide receiver Amari Cooper from Browns, giving QB Josh Allen a much-needed playmaker

The Buffalo Bills upgraded their patchwork group of receivers by acquiring Amari Cooper in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. Buffalo gave up a third-round pick in the 2025 draft as part of the trade that also included a swap of late-round picks. The trade was made a day after the Bills expanded their lead atop the AFC East with a 23-20 win over their division rival New York Jets. The Browns' decision to trade one of their top players could be a sign of the team giving up on a season growing worse by the week after Cleveland dropped to 1-5 with a loss to Philadelphia on Sunday.
