First day of spring sports for high school student-athletes

PARK CITY, Kan. – The Hutchinson High School boys and girls wrestling teams competed in the Class 5A state championships on Friday and Saturday, sending nine wrestlers to the tournament and finishing with four on the podium.

Seniors Kade Smith (175 pounds), sophomores Cruz Cannon (113) and Max Harris (157), and freshman Aadia Brown (100) each placed in the top six of their respective weight classes.

Smith capped his high school career with a third-place finish and a 41-4 season record. On the opening day of the tournament, he moved into second place on Hutchinson’s all-time wins list, surpassing Salthawk alumnus and current Central Missouri head coach Cody Garcia. On Saturday, Smith entered the final day of competition four wins shy of the program’s all-time record, held by Romero Cotton. In the third-place match, he pinned Bishop Carroll’s Elijah Means to tie Cotton’s record with 136 career victories.

In the boys' tournament, Cannon and Harris battled through the consolation bracket to earn fifth and third place, respectively. On the girls’ side, Brown secured a sixth-place finish in her debut season.

COFFEYVILLE &ndash; Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/mazza_antony_9347">Anthony Mazza</a>&nbsp;had three hits and three pitchers combined to hold Coffeyville to four hits as the No. 21-ranked Hutchinson Community College baseball team to a 6-2 victory in Game 3 of a four-game series over the Coffeyville Red Ravens on Saturday at Walter Johnson Park.
Game 2 was frustrating for the Blue Dragons as they stranded 12 runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the seventh and eighth innings, in a 2-0 loss to the Red Ravens in the series finale on Saturday.
The Blue Dragons (11-2) and Red Ravens (9-2) split their four-game series. The Dragons travel to play Hesston College on a single nine-inning game on Tuesday in Hesston. Hutchinson then opens Jayhawk West play on Thursday in Dodge City.
Mazza had hits in both games on Saturday to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
GAME 1 RECAP &ndash; Hutchinson 6, Coffeyville 2 Leading 3-2 entering the seventh inning, the Blue Dragons loaded the bases with no out.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/tygart_baker_ked6">C.J. Reid</a>&nbsp;hit a sacrifice fly to score Mazza, then pinch-hitter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/fegen_scotty_n1yk">Scotty Fegen</a>&nbsp;delivered a two-out, two-run double that gave the Dragons a 6-2 lead.
That gave three Blue Dragon pitchers plenty of run support.
<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/wolcott_jake_0h6q">Jake Wolcott</a>&nbsp;(1-0) started and got his first win as a Blue Dragon. Wolcott allowed two hits and one run with three strikeouts and two walks in four full innings.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/ainsworth_seth_huwf">Seth Ainsworth</a>&nbsp;allowed one run and one hit with two strikeouts. Collin Flores had a strikeout in a scoreless seventh inning.
The Blue Dragons out-hit Coffeyville 11-4.
Mazza went 3 for 4 for his 10th multi-hit game of the season. He had an RBI double in the third inning that tied the game at 1-1.

The Dragons were limited to four hits, but had 17 total baserunners thanks to 10 Coffeyville walks. The Dragons stranded 12 runners on base.

GOODLAND &ndash; Sophomore pitcher&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/tomlinson_morgan_0v0v">Morgan Tomlinson</a>&nbsp;and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/williams_mia_83rx">Mia Williams</a>&nbsp;combined for the Hutchinson Community College softball team's first no-hitter in two seasons on Saturday during a Jayhawk Conference doubleheader sweep of Fort Hays Tech Northwest.
The combined no-hitter came in Game 1 as Hutchinson run-ruled Fort Hays Tech Northwest 21-0 in five innings. Then freshmen pitchers&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/thomas_aubree_o0p2">Aubree Thomas</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/schmidt_jessica_edec">Jessica Schmidt</a>&nbsp;teamed up for a one-hit shutout in a 20-0 victory in five innings.
The Blue Dragons are now 8-4 overall and 4-0 to start the KJCCC season. The Dragons travel to play Butler on Wednesday. Fort Hays Tech Northwest fell to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the KJCCC.
The no-hitter by Tomlinson and Williams was the first for the Blue Dragons since a combined no-hitter by Morgan Pennycuff, Kiersten Wietze, Korri Lies and Riley Wertz against Northwest Tech on April 19, 2023.
Tomlinson pitched the first three innings and allowed only one walk. Tomlinson, who used just 35 pitches, struck out a career-high eight batters. Her previous career high was six.
Williams struck out a season-high four batters and walked one in her two innings where she used 31 pitches.
This is the 12th no-hitter in the Jaime Rose era.

The Dragons had 18 hits and took advantage of 10 Tiger errors and six Tiger walks.
Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/dice_emily_75aj">Emily Dice</a>&nbsp;had a career-high four hits, going 4 for 4 with a single-game-record-tying three doubles. Dice tied 12 other Blue Dragons for the single-game school record for doubles. The Dragon second baseman had a career-high four runs scored and drove in two with a two-run double in a seven-run second inning.
The Blue Dragons' seven combined doubles tied for fourth most in team single-game history. The two triples tied for third in single-game history.

The Blue Dragons had a season-high 24 hits, which tied for the sixth most in single-game history. The Top six batters in the order were a combined 17 for 27 with 15 runs and 16 RBIs.
Golly led the Dragons going 4 for 4 with two doubles, a home run and seven RBIs. She had RBIs with each of her hits &ndash; an RBI single in the first, RBI double in the second, two-run double and a three-run home run in an 11-run third inning.

🥎 Tomlinson, Williams combine for Blue Dragon no-hitter 

SALINA, Kan. — Buhler High School junior Macey Parks had quite the day on Saturday, claiming the class 4A state title at 145 pounds at Tony's Pizza Events Center.&nbsp;

The win also marked Parks' 100th career victory as a Crusader.

Parks defeated Taya Rowley of Chapman, 6-5.&nbsp;

She jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first period thanks to a takedown and a nearfall. Rowley pulled within 6-2 after the first period, and then 6-3 after the second period. Rowley scored on an escape and after a stalling penalty to pull within the 6-5 margin.

Parks finishes her junior year with a 35-7 record.&nbsp;

On the boys side, Buhler had two in the finals, Cruz Hershberger and Sammy Hershberger, each of them finished as state runner-ups. Luke Kerns finished in fifth place.&nbsp;

🤼‍♀️ Buhler's Parks claims 4A state title, 100th career win Saturday

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Audi Crooks put Iowa State on her shoulders in the third quarter, scoring 14 of her career-high 36 points as the Cyclones blew past No. 14 Kansas State 85-63 in their regular season finale on Sunday.

With a one-point lead to start the second half, Crooks, a 6-foot-3 sophomore center, was 6-for-6 from the floor plus two free throws in the third quarter as the Cyclones outscored K-State 27-15 to take over the game.

The loss scrambles the Big 12 Conference standings, knocking the Wildcats out of a tie with No. 21 Oklahoma State for the No. 3 seed into the tournament and into a three-way tie for fourth with No. 18 West Virginia and Utah. OSU knocked off Kansas Sunday to clinch the third seed and the Mountaineers, who beat Kansas State head-to-head, get the No. 4 seed and a bye into the quarterfinals. Kansas State is the No. 5 seed and the Utes the No. 6, and each will have a first-round bye. Iowa State (21-10, 12-6) is the No. 7 seed, also with a first-round tournament bye.

Crooks, the fastest Cyclone in program history to reach 1,000 career points, has now scored in double figures in 63 straight games, one shy of the Iowa State record held by Angie Welle. Colorado got within eight points once and later the score was 63-54 after Sebastian Rancik hit two free throws for the Buffaloes with a minute to go.

Macaleab Rich made two free throws for K-State with 48 seconds left and Rancik's dunk with six seconds remaining finished off the scoring.

There was one tie, no lead changes, and Kansas State led for 38 1/2 minutes.

Brendan Hausen scored 11 points and Dug McDaniel had 10 points and seven assists for Kansas State (14-15, 8-10 Big 12).

Colorado (11-18, 2-16 Big 12) got 11 points from RJ Smith and 10 each from Rancik and Bangot Dak.

The Wildcats took an early 12-2 lead, thanks to a 10-0 run in which Colorado committed three shooting fouls, good for five made K-State free throws. The Wildcats built a 33-17 lead with two minutes left in the half before Colorado scored the last five to trail 33-22 at the break.

It was the first meeting between the two teams since Colorado left the Big 12 after the 2001 season.

With two games left in the regular season, Kansas State is tied for ninth place and Colorado is last.

WICHITA, Kan. &ndash;&nbsp;Wichita State's seventh inning rally came up two runs short as they fell to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium. &nbsp; SDSU took the early lead with a RBI single in the top of the first inning, but Shocker starter&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/chloe-barber/9310" rel="smarttag" rev="9310" data-airgap-id="59">Chloe Barber</a></dfn>&nbsp;avoided disaster by leaving the bases full of Jackrabbits to minimize the threat. &nbsp; In the second, the Jacks added to their lead, scoring two runs in their half to take a 3-0 lead. &nbsp; SDSU continued their good day at the plate in the third inning, adding another two runs to jump out to a 5-0 lead. &nbsp; In the bottom half of the third, the Shockers worked the bases loaded with two outs and&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/taylor-sedlacek/9318" rel="smarttag" rev="9318" data-airgap-id="60">Taylor Sedlacek</a></dfn>&nbsp;drew a walk to get WSU on the board, making it a 5-1 game, but that's all they would get. &nbsp; The Jackrabbits got the run right back in the top of the fourth with a solo home run to retake a five-run lead, but&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/ryley-nihart/9325" rel="smarttag" rev="9325" data-airgap-id="61">Ryley Nihart</a></dfn>&nbsp;struck out three Jacks in a row to end the inning. &nbsp; In the bottom of the fourth,&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/jodie-epperson/9323" rel="smarttag" rev="9323" data-airgap-id="62">Jodie Epperson</a></dfn>&nbsp;recorded the Shockers' first hit, a double off the wall in left center, and later came in to score on an RBI single by&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/camryn-compton/9311" rel="smarttag" rev="9311" data-airgap-id="63">Camryn Compton</a></dfn>, making it 6-2. &nbsp; After a scoreless fifth and sixth inning, the Shockers loaded the bases with only one out, and Sedlacek broke through with an RBI single to left. Bruno hit a home run, putting the Jayhawks on the board and giving them a 1-0 lead. Marshall answered back in the top of the third with two runs of their own, taking a one-run lead. Marshall was then able to grab a run in the top of the fifth inning, tying the game at 3-3. In the sixth inning, Marshall was able to get a runner in scoring position with only one out, but the Jayhawks defense was able to hold Marshall scoreless heading into the bottom of the sixth. Kansas was able to get two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to score the go-ahead run and finished regulation tied 3-3. Kansas continued its strong defensive performance in the eighth inning, keeping Marshall scoreless once again. With a chance to close it out in the bottom of the eighth, the Jayhawks rallied with great effort. KANSAS CITY, Mo.&nbsp;&ndash; The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced the bracket and seed for its 2025 postseason men&rsquo;s basketball championship, set for March 5-9 in Kansas City&rsquo;s historic Municipal Auditorium. &nbsp; The 2024-25 MIAA basketball regular season concluded on Saturday, March 1. Ten men&rsquo;s teams and 10 women&rsquo;s teams will make the trip to Kansas City, Mo., this week for the 2025 MIAA Basketball Championships, presented by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bankwithsouthern.com/">Southern Bank</a>. MIAA Madness tips off Wednesday, March 5, with the men&rsquo;s sessions in the afternoon and the women&rsquo;s sessions in the evening. &nbsp; &nbsp; Washburn will be the top seed in the men&rsquo;s tournament. Currently anked No. 1 in the Central Region and No. 4 in Division II, Washburn dominated the league this season with an impressive MIAA record of 17-2 and 26-2 overall. The Ichabods clinched the 2024-25 MIAA regular season title on February 22 with a 30-point win over Rogers State. The championship was Washburn&rsquo;s 11th regular season title and first since the 2011-12 season when the Ichabods shared the title with Northwest Missouri and Central Missouri. Commanders acquire wide receiver Deebo Samuel in a trade with the 49ers, AP source says

WASHINGTON (AP) — A person with knowledge of the trade tells The Associated Press the Washington Commanders have acquired wide receiver Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers, pending a physical, for a fifth-round pick. The deal cannot be made official until the start of the new league year March 12. The 29-year-old gives the Commanders another playmaker for quarterback Jayden Daniels going into his second NFL season. Samuel had 51 catches for 670 yards and three touchdowns last season with the 49ers.

Manfred considering petition to have Rose posthumously removed from ineligible list, AP source says

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred is considering a petition to have Pete Rose posthumously removed from Major League Baseball's ineligible list, according to a person familiar with the situation. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the conversations. ESPN was the first to report on the reinstatement petition filed by Jeffrey Lenkov, a Southern California lawyer who represented Rose prior to his death at age 83 in September. Lenkov attended a Dec. 17 meeting with Rose's daughter, Fawn, Manfred and MLB executive Pat Courtney in the commissioner's office. The petition was filed on Jan. 8.

Jahmai Mashack hits long 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift No. 5 Tennessee past No. 6 Alabama, 79-76

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Jahmai Mashack raced up the court and hit a 3-pointer from well beyond the arc at the buzzer to give No. 5 Tennessee a 79-76 victory over No. 6 Alabama on Saturday. The Volunteers (24-5, 11-5 Southeastern Conference) got the final shot by forcing a five-second inbounds violation under Alabama's basket with 3.8 seconds left. Chaz Lanier and Jordan Gainey each scored 18 points for Tennessee. Zakai Zeigler had 15, and Mashack finished with 11. Mark Sears led Alabama (23-6, 12-4) with 24 points. Labaron Philan had 13 and Aden Holloway added 11.

No. 7 St. John's clinches first Big East regular-season title in 40 years and eyes more celebrations

NEW YORK (AP) — The final horn sounded and St. John's skipped cutting down the nets. Instead, players held the trophy after St. John's clinched its first outright Big East regular-season title since 1985, posed for pictures on the court while confetti fell from the ceiling at Madison Square Garden in front of a sellout crowd. The celebration was modest because the seventh-ranked Red Storm are eyeing other celebrations such as their first Big East Tournament title since 2000 and a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.

Cooper Flagg returns for 2nd half after leaving No. 2 Duke's victory with eye injury

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Duke players see star freshman Cooper Flagg's toughness on a regular basis and that was on display for everyone else Saturday night. Flagg returned for the second half of the No. 2 Blue Devils' 100-65 victory overt Florida State after leaving in the first half following a hard foul when he was poked in the eye. Coach Jon Scheyer described the injury as a bruised eyelid. Flagg sat out more than 11 minutes to end the half, while the team's eye doctor checked on him. He was back on the court for the first 12 minutes of the second half, finishing the game with 16 points on 5-for-9 shooting. He wasn't made available to speak to reporters after the game.

USC's JuJu Watkins hangs 30 points on UCLA at historic Pauley Pavilion

LOS ANGELES (AP) — JuJu Watkins had 30 points, five assists, three blocks and two steals for No. 4 Southern California an 80-67 victory over No. 2 UCLA. The Trojans won their first Big Ten regular-season championship in the school's first year in the league. Watkins dominated at Pauley Pavilion, where the Bruins men's teams have hung 11 national championship banners. With Watkins' help, the Trojans have handed UCLA its only two losses this season. The crosstown rivals could meet again next week in the Big Ten tournament in Indianapolis.

Alex Ovechkin scores 884th goal to move 10 back of tying Wayne Gretzky's NHL career record

WASHINGTON (AP) — Alex Ovechkin scored the 884th goal of his NHL career to move 10 away from tying Wayne Gretzky's record. The Washington Capitals captain beat fellow Russian Andrei Vasilevskiy of the Tampa Bay Lightning with four minutes left in the third period. Ovechkin's 31st goal of the season is his 12th in 22 games against Vasilevskiy. Despite the 39-year-old scoring, the Eastern Conference-leading Capitals lost a third consecutive game for the first time this season.

Florida Panthers acquire D Seth Jones in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — The defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers have acquired defenseman Seth Jones in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks. Florida got Jones and a 2026 fourth-round pick from Chicago for goaltender Spencer Knight and a conditional first-round pick in next year's draft. Landon Forbes drilled a three-pointer, the only made-three in the first half for Hutchinson, as the first 20 minutes came to a close to put the Dragons up 26-20 at the break.

The Lady Saints knotted things up at 35 after three quarters of play.

An Avery Marchino layup with 2:47 left tied things again at 47 before the Dragons were able to pull away for good.

Hutchinson closed the game on an 11-3 run.

With her 15th point of the contest, Jackson hit the 1,000-point mark for her career.

Jackson now has 1,018 points in her career, good for seventh on the all-time list.

The Red Raiders used a 16-2 run early in the half to turn a six-point deficit into an eight-point lead. They led 48-37 at halftime.

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders were not intimidated by Allen Fieldhouse and the raucous crowd. Despite being 1-21 all-time in the facility, the Raiders responded every time the Jayhawks made a run.

WASHINGTON (AP)—President Donald Trump says he plans to issue “a complete PARDON of Pete Rose," baseball’s late career hits leader who was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/general-news-8fb1c12e1498a0c3ffacef4beaa4e642">banned from MLB and the Hall of Fame</a>&nbsp;for sports betting.

Trump posted on Truth Social on Friday night to say Rose, who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pete-rose-obituary-reds-e0f3dfa057fc46629447e04b6540e4c8">died in September</a>&nbsp;at 83, “shouldn’t have been gambling on baseball, but only bet on HIS TEAM WINNING.”

Trump did not specifically mention Rose’s tax evasion case in which Rose pleaded guilty in 1990 and served a five-month prison sentence.

The president said he would sign a pardon for Rose “over the next few weeks.”

MLB handed Rose a lifetime ban in 1989 after an investigation determined he had bet on baseball games, including some involving his own Cincinnati Reds.

Winners of two-straight games, the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team is still in control of its future seeding for the Region 6 Tournament entering play on Saturday.
The Blue Dragons (18-10, 14-8 KJCCC) travel to play the Seward County Saints (3-24, 2-20 KJCCC) at 4 p.m. at Seward County's Green House in Liberal.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 3:45 p.m. with Sean Boston (play-by-play) and Daren Dunn (analyst) calling the action. The game will be streamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 3:45 p.m.
The Blue Dragons are looking for a Top 4 finish in the Jayhawk Conference, which carries an opening-round bye for the tournament, which begins next Saturday, March 8.
The Blue Dragons are tied for fourth with the Butler Grizzlies with two games to play. Hutchinson owns the head-to-head tie-breaker with the Grizzlies based on a season sweep.
Hutchinson closes with Seward County on Saturday and a home game on Wednesday against Dodge City. Butler closes with a road game at Cloud County Saturday and a home game on Wednesday against Cowley.
Over their two-game winning streak, the Blue Dragons have been solid defensively. In victories over Butler and Pratt, the Dragons are allowing an average of 61.0 points per game while opponents are shooting 38.3 percent.
For the season, the Dragons are allowing 75.1 points and 42.0 percent shooting.
Bo Aldridge had career highs of 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead Hutchinson in its 65-59 victory over Pratt on Wednesday night.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/arnold_khalil_9vae">Khalil Arnold</a>&nbsp;added 12 points. The Dragons held Pratt to 35.1 percent shooting and just 2 of 23 from 3-point range.
Seward County has already been eliminated from postseason contention. The Saints have lost nine-straight games. The Saints lost 74-58 to Coffeyville on Wednesday.
The Blue Dragons defeated Seward County 74-50 on January 15 at the Sports Arena. D.J. Dudley had 25 points, while Arnold and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/cannon_bobby_1l4l">Bobby Cannon</a>&nbsp;had 11 points each. Muhammad Jobe finished with 20 to lead the Saints.
Hutchinson leads the all-time series with Seward County 87-31.</div>

With two games remaining in the 2024-25 regular season, the Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team still has a shot to repeat its Jayhawk Conference championship.

In order to keep that chance alive, the Blue Dragons take on the Seward County Saints in a big KJCCC road contest on Saturday afternoon. The No. 11-ranked Blue Dragons (25-3, 19-3 KJCCC) and Saints (19-9, 14-8), tip off at 2 p.m. at the Green House in Liberal.

Second place in the Jayhawk, the Blue Dragons trail first-place Dodge City by one game entering play on Saturday. Dodge City plays host to KJCCC third-place and No. 18 Coffeyville on Saturday. Hutchinson closes the regular season with Dodge City on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.
The Blue Dragons have won two games in a row after a decisive victory on Wednesday after defeating Pratt 85-44. <a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/forbes_landon_o30r">Landon Forbes</a> scored a game-high 18 points and tallied a career-high nine steals, which tied for the fourth-most steals in program history.
Seward County still has an outside chance to claim a top-four league finish. The Saints trail fourth-place Butler by two games. The Saints would have to win their two remaining games and Butler would have to lose its two remaining games. Then it would be left up to a tie-breaker because the Saints and Grizzlies split their games this season.
The Saints were defeated by Coffeyville 57-47 on Wednesday. Kylie Hunt led the Saints with 12 points.
The first game with Hutchinson and Seward County was a defensive grind won by the Blue Dragons, 52-40 on January 15 at the Sports Arena. That victory was Blue Dragon head coach John Ontjes' 500th career coaching victory. <a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/jackson_hailey_q6t6">Hailey Jackson</a> had 21 points and 11 rebounds to pace Hutchinson. The Dragon defense held Seward County 28 points under its season-scoring average.</div>
