WICHITA, Kan. &ndash;&nbsp;Wichita State head baseball coach&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/brian-green/1256" rel="smarttag" rev="1256">Brian Green</a></dfn>&nbsp;announced Thursday the hiring of veteran coach Marty Lees as the program's recruiting coordinator and infield coach. Lees brings more than two decades of experience at the Division I level to Wichita, including time on staff at Oregon State, Oklahoma State and Washington State. "Marty adds a wealth of experience, energy, and success to our program," Green said. "He's one of the best recruiters in the country and has proven that over and over at every stop. His ability to connect with players and families, his knowledge of the game, and his commitment to building a championship culture make him a perfect fit for Wichita State." Lees comes to Wichita State after two seasons as head coach at Stillwater High School, plus stints as manager of the Cape Cod League's Chatham Anglers and the USA Baseball Athlete Development Program. "I'm incredibly excited to join the Wichita State family," Lees said. "This is a proud program with a rich tradition, and I'm honored to be part of Coach Green's vision for the future. I'm ready to hit the ground running and bring in student-athletes who will represent Shocker Nation with pride." At the collegiate level, Lees most recently served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma State, returning to Stillwater for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. It marked his second time on staff with the Cowboys, where Lees previously worked as assistant coach from 2013-2015. Lees helped Oklahoma State land consecutive recruiting classes ranked in the top five nationally (2013 and 2014) that ultimately produced three regional appearances and the program's first Big 12 regular season championship. In his second stretch with Oklahoma State, Lees added two more top-20 recruiting classes, including the #8-ranked class in 2021. Before returning to Stillwater, Lees spent four seasons as head coach at Washington State, where he led the Cougars from 2016-2019 prior to&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/brian-green/1256" rel="smarttag" rev="1256">Brian Green</a></dfn>'s arrival. Over the course of his tenure in Pullman, 13 Cougars were drafted by MLB organizations. Lees is perhaps best known for his time at Oregon State, where he served as an assistant coach from 2002-09 and associate head coach from 2009-12. During that 11-year run under legendary head coach Pat Casey, the Beavers made three straight College World Series appearances and captured back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007. In six years as the Beavers recruiting coordinator, Oregon State brought in a top-25 recruiting class each season. A native of Lakeview, Oregon, Lees played collegiately at Lane Community College and Western Oregon before beginning his coaching career. He coached at Oakridge and Harrisburg High Schools in addition to time with the Eugene Challengers American Legion team before joining the coaching staff at Oregon State. It is the first all-time meeting between the Wildcats and Fighting Hawks as the two teams were scheduled to play in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic altered the schedule. Another 6 p.m., contest &ndash; this time on ESPN &ndash; is slated for Saturday, September 6, when the Wildcats welcome Army to Bill Snyder Family Stadium for the second time ever and first since 1987. LAWRENCE, Kan. &ndash;&nbsp;Kansas football is nearing the 2025 season with kickoff just 86 days away, and the Big 12 Conference announced four of Kansas' game times and tv designations on Thursday. &nbsp; Kansas will host the grand opening of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium on national television on Saturday, August 23 in week 0 as the Jayhawks host the Fresno State Bulldogs at 5:30 p.m. CT on FOX. The season opener will be Kansas' first game played in the new David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium and will kick off the 134th&nbsp;season of Kansas football. &nbsp; Following the season opener, Kansas will host the Wagner Seahawks on Friday, August 29 at 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN+. &nbsp; The Jayhawks will then reignite one of college football's oldest rivalries when Kansas travels to Columbia, Missouri to take on Missouri on September 6 at 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2. The rivalry between Kansas and Missouri has been played 120 times dating back to 1891, which is tied for the 10th-most played rivalry in all of college football. The meeting will be the first since 2011 and the first to be played on either campus since 2006. &nbsp; Kansas will finish off its regular season on Friday, November 28 at 11 a.m. CT when the Jayhawks welcome Big 12 opponent Utah to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. The game will air on ABC or ESPN. It will be the first meeting between the two teams as members of the Big 12 Conference, while Kansas and Utah last met in 1996. LAWRENCE, Kan. &mdash;&nbsp;After 12&nbsp;seasons with the Kansas men's basketball program,&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/fred-quartlebaum/731" rel="smarttag" rev="731">Fred Quartlebaum</a></dfn>&nbsp;will be leaving his post as director of basketball operations in June, KU head coach&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/bill-self/727" rel="smarttag" rev="727">Bill Self</a></dfn>&nbsp;announced today. &nbsp; "Q has been with us for the last 12 seasons and has been very involved in many aspects of our program, but primarily as the liaison between our staff and community relations," Self said of Quartlebaum. "He's been the primary person in charge of working with the players and developing a culture within our program. He has done a fantastic job and will be missed. I'm excited for him and (his wife) Christy as they move into another phase in their lives." &nbsp; Quartlebaum joined the KU staff in 2013 as the director of student-athlete development. He moved into his role as director of basketball operations in 2020. In his time at KU, Quartlebaum was part of six Big 12 regular-season championships, two Big 12 Tournament titles, three NCAA Tournament Elite Eights and the 2022 NCAA National Championship.&nbsp; &nbsp; Self will be promoting&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/staff-directory/lexi-price/188" rel="smarttag" rev="188">Lexi Price</a></dfn>&nbsp;to Kansas men's basketball director of operations. Price has been the office manager for KU basketball since December, 2021. &nbsp; "Lexi is one of the most organized and detail-oriented individuals I have been around," Self said. "Her skill set allows this to be seamless and smooth transition. The new position will be a continuation of her current role in addition to coordinating student-athlete enrollment, housing, and team travel." &nbsp; Price has been a part of Kansas men's basketball since the 2017-18 season where she was a student team manager for four seasons. The Topeka, Kansas, native earned her bachelor's degree in sport management with a minor in psychology from KU in 2020. 🏀 Quartlebaum to leave KU men's coaching staff after 12 seasons

Major League Baseball is investing in Athletes Unlimited to support its softball league that will&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/athletes-unlimited-softball-schedule-ed102210df4814c6baa39deb4da40d93">debut next month</a>, marking the first time MLB will have a comprehensive partnership with a professional women’s sports league.

MLB said Thursday it was making a strategic investment in the Athletes Unlimited Softball League of an undisclosed amount for operational costs and a commitment to help it gain visibility in various ways, including assistance with content, marketing and sales, events, distribution, editorial, and digital and social platforms. That includes marketing the AUSL and its athletes during MLB’s All-Star Game and throughout the postseason.

“This is something we’re really excited about,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred told The Associated Press. “We studied the space hard. We think it’s a real opportunity and we’re excited to be involved.” 

Athletes Unlimited has featured softball since 2020, when it unveiled a unique format that crowned an individual champion. The company will launch a league with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/softball-world-series-athletes-unlimited-ada264ef1a7b682f9f4e355ef3a5ca50">a traditional, team-based format</a>&nbsp;starting June 7 and will keep its individual format for the AUSL All-Star Cup that follows.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Manfred noted that interest in women’s sports had “escalated significantly” in recent years and his league had been looking for ways to get more involved, including the possible launch of its own softball league. He said Athletes Unlimited’s overall success and its strong infrastructure helped make the decision to collaborate easier.

“We thought rather than starting on our own and competing, that finding a place where we could invest and grow a business was a better opportunity for us,” Manfred said.

Kim Ng, a former Major League Baseball executive, signed on as an adviser with the AUSL and was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/softball-ausl-kim-ng-a49f48589ce7d20afb6e372a93dfce4a">promoted to commissioner</a>&nbsp;in April. Ng is the former general manager of the Miami Marlins, the first female GM in any of the major U.S. pro sports leagues, and has three World Series rings from a combined 21 years in the front offices of the Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers.

“As the process moved forward and it looked like we were going to make an investment, they hired Kim, and we had a long relationship with Kim, and it just added additional comfort to the idea of making the investment,” Manfred said.

Athletes Unlimited co-founder Jon Patricof said MLB’s commitment to increasing the AUSL’s visibility is as important as the financial investment.

“They’re committed to really elevating the AUSL,” he said. “It’s probably about one of the most difficult things for any sports league to do which is to get visibility and break through to new audiences, and I think MLB is already doing that for the AUSL, and there’s going to be a lot more to come.”

Women’s pro softball leagues and independent teams have come and gone over the years, but none have offered a consistent option for women to have a stable future in the sport.

It appears that might change, with the help of softball greats Cat Osterman, Jennie Finch, Jessica Mendoza and Natasha Watley as AUSL advisors. On June 7, the Bandits and Talons will open with a three-game series in Rosemont, Illinois, and the Blaze and Volts will start off with a three-game series in Wichita, Kansas. The four teams will play 24 games this season as touring properties that will play games in 12 cities. The top two teams will compete in the AUSL Championship, a best-of-three series July 26-28 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Patricof said the league plans to expand to six teams next season and be city based.

MLB already supports several women’s softball and baseball initiatives, including a partnership with USA Softball and operation of the MLB Develops girls baseball pipeline. It is not involved with the upstart&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/womens-pro-baseball-league-2026-e572ee8481c4e0ba3f2b611eaf47f9cd">Women’s Professional Baseball League</a>, which plans to launch in 2026 as the first pro baseball league for women since the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League — of “A League of Their Own” fame — folded in 1954.

Manfred said he sees a bright future ahead for AUSL.

“I fully expect that they will expand, and we hope that we will end up with a league that is sustainable on its own, a good investment for us, and a partner in growing diamond sports internationally,” he said.

Patricof said the partnership with MLB and the already existing relationship between the Athletes Unlimited and USA Softball combine to help give the AUSL stability.

“As we announce MLB coming into the fold formally into what we’re doing with the AUSL, you really see a full alignment of this sport behind this league, and that I think is exciting for everyone,” Patricof said. “People who have sat on the sidelines or maybe have watched pro softball from a little bit of distance — everybody’s now jumped in, and I think that is an exciting moment for people who’ve been around this sport.”

SEDGWICK, Kan. — Sedgwick High School has named Lee Weber as its next head football coach, succeeding longtime leader Jeff Werner, who stepped down in April.

Werner led the Cardinals for 17 seasons, compiling 139 wins along with 12 district championships and five regional titles. Sedgwick finished 8-2 in each of the past two seasons.

Weber brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as head coach at Plainville, Mission Valley, Council Grove, Wamego and Rose Hill. He most recently was an assistant coach at Campus High School in Haysville.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — The Kansas City Royals on Wednesday confirmed that an affiliated entity has purchased the mortgage for the Aspiria campus in Overland Park, but emphasized that no decision has been made on the site of a new stadium.

The team’s statement, issued after a Kansas City Business Journal report revealed the transaction, clarified that the mortgage acquisition was part of broader exploration efforts and does not signal a final site selection.

“We have not yet decided on a site, and any assertion to the contrary is inaccurate,” the statement read. “As part of our ongoing efforts, we have negotiated with or made investments in multiple potential sites – both in Missouri and in Kansas. One of these investments was the acquisition (by an affiliate of the Royals) of the mortgage on the Aspiria campus through an arms-length bidding process.”

The Aspiria property, formerly the Sprint campus, sits at 119th Street and Nall Avenue. The Business Journal reported the May 9 purchase price was approximately $164 million.

The Royals reiterated their commitment to identifying a “generational home” for the franchise, one that benefits fans, the team, partners and the regional community.

Last month, Aspiria officials announced plans to add 2,000 new jobs and projected a $6 billion economic impact over the next 10 years.

⚾ Royals confirm mortgage purchase on Aspiria Campus, stadium site undecided

The high school boys golf season concluded on Wednesday with six sites crowning individual and team titles. The Hutch Post-area was well-represented, as Central Christian School claimed the 1A team title, while Hesston's Grant Waterson claimed the Class 3A individual championship.

Central Christian School clinched its second boys state golf championship in program history, capturing the Class 1A title Tuesday at Mariah Hills Golf Course in Dodge City. The Cougars posted a two-day team total of 633 (318-315), pulling away from runner-up South Gray by 17 strokes.

It marked Central Christian’s first state crown since 2022.

Ryland Kooiman led the charge for the Cougars with a 148 (73-75), tying for third place individually. His younger brother, Cael Kooiman, followed closely in seventh at 150 (77-73), while Nathan Reed joined them in the top 10 with a tie for eighth at 159 (82-77).

Tyler Reed added a 176 (86-90) for the team score, and Brody Froese (118-102—220) and Tarren Scripsick (116-112—228) rounded out the lineup.

South Gray’s Gavin Wahl dominated the individual leaderboard, carding back-to-back 68s for a 136 total, winning by nine strokes. Elkhart’s Bodie Higgins (67-78—145) placed second.

Elkhart (320-343—663) finished third in the team standings, followed by Washington County, South Central and Onaga.

Noah Dowell of Hoxie fired rounds of 68 and 72 to win medalist honors at the Class 2A championship held at Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson. Dowell finished at 2-under-par 140, edging Oakley’s Easton Fink by two strokes.

Trinity Catholic's Tyler Casebolt led area performances with a 161 (82-79), good for 14th place. Teammates Miles Blaylock (81-84—165) and Lincoln Barnes (84-82—166) also posted top-30 finishes, helping the Celtics close their season strong.

Sterling’s Cameron Morris tied for 18th place after carding a 163 (84-79), bouncing back from a rough opening round with a strong Day 2 performance.

Salina Sacred Heart captured the team championship with a combined score of 611 (311-300), pulling away from second-place Syracuse (301-327—628). Hoxie (322-321—643) took third, followed by Cair Paravel, St. Marys Colgan, and Hill City in the top six.

Hesston's Grant Waterson captured the individual championship in Class 3A held Tuesday and Wednesday at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Garden City.

Waterson opened with a 1-under-par 71 and followed with a 76 in Wednesday’s final round for a 36-hole total of 147, claiming a two-stroke victory over Connor Newman of Humboldt and Drew Buchman of Council Grove, who tied for second at 149.

Hesston’s team did not factor into the top six of the standings, but Austin Penner also contributed with a tie for 29th place, finishing with a 167 (82-85) on the par-72 course.

Wichita Collegiate took home the team title, posting a two-day total of 644 (315-329) to edge Wichita-Trinity Academy by five strokes. Trinity Academy shot 649 (316-333), while Sabetha (326-330—656) placed third.

Columbus’ Landon Langston and Perry-Lecompton’s Marius Carlsen tied for fourth individually at 151, while a trio of golfers tied for sixth at 153.

Wamego edged Topeka-Hayden by three strokes to capture the Class 4A state title, held Tuesday and Wednesday at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton.

Wamego shot a two-day team total of 621 (309-312), led by Regan Kueker’s runner-up individual finish at 143 (70-73). Topeka-Hayden (316-308—624) and Circle (331-324—655) rounded out the top three team placings.

Pratt's Grant McAtee delivered a standout performance for south-central Kansas, finishing third individually with a two-day total of 151 (79-72) on the par-72 course. His final-round 72 was the second-lowest score of the day.

Buhler's Drew DeMeyer earned a top-10 finish, placing eighth at 155 (77-78). He helped the Crusaders take sixth in the team standings with a combined score of 665 (332-333). Teammate Zach Chance tied for 19th with a 162 (80-82), while Nick Chance finished in a tie for 40th at 170 (82-88).

Other Buhler competitors included Isaiah Heredia (102-85—187), Jace Heimerman (93-102—195), and James Dingler (96-116—212).

Independence’s Ethan Small claimed medalist honors, finishing at 2-under-par 142 (69-73), three strokes ahead of the field.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Noah Cameron pitched into the seventh, scattering six singles as the Kansas City Royals beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 to salvage the final game of the series on Wednesday night.

Cameron (2-1) allowed a run on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

Maikel Garcia singled with one out in the fourth, extending his hitting streak to 13 games, then scored from first on Drew Waters’ deflected single.

In the fifth, John Rave doubled to right, collecting his first major league hit, and scored when Bobby Witt Jr. bounced a two-out double inside the first base bag for a 2-0 lead.

Witt added an insurance run with a seventh-inning sacrifice fly.

Carlos Estévez struck out two for a four-out save, his 15th.

Among his three singles, Spencer Steer delivered two-out RBI hits in the sixth and eighth.

Tyler Stephenson hit three singles while TJ Friedl hit two singles and has multiple hits in six straight games.

Hunter Greene (4-3) allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts in five innings.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs return to Hobart-Detter Field on Friday, with Opening Night set for 7 p.m. against the Newton Rebels.

The team reported Monday to begin preparations for the 2025 summer collegiate season, the Monarchs’ 17th year in the Salt City. The program has built a strong tradition, highlighted by its NBC World Series championship in 2023 under current manager Casey Lippoldt.

The Monarchs' 2025 schedule includes 33 dates, with 18 home games at Hobart-Detter. The full schedule is available online.

Hutchinson will host its annual Cancer Awareness Game on Saturday, June 14, against the Great Bend Bat Cats. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

A Vintage Baseball Game is scheduled for Saturday, June 28, at 5:15 p.m., ahead of the Monarchs’ matchup with the Derby Twins at 7 p.m.

Lippoldt enters his third season as Monarchs manager. Hutchinson native Ryan Stoecklein joins the staff this summer for his first season as an assistant coach.

🎧⚾ Royals fall again; Wind Surge shutout Drillers; ⛳ CCS has lead after Day 1 at state

Day 1 of the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) boys golf state championships are in the books on a cool, damp and windy day at six different sites.

Hutchinson Central Christian holds a narrow lead after the opening round of the Class 1A boys golf state championship at Mariah Hills Golf Course, positioning itself for a run at the program’s second state title.

The Cougars posted a team score of 318 on Tuesday, two shots ahead of Elkhart (320) and five clear of third-place South Gray (323) heading into Wednesday’s final round.

Senior Ryland Kooiman paced Central Christian with a 2-over-par 73, placing him fifth individually. His younger brother, sophomore Cael Kooiman, is eighth after carding a 77. Senior Nathan Reed shot 82 to tie for 11th, while sophomore Tyler Reed added an 86 to round out the team scoring.

Sophomore Tarren Scripsick (116) and senior Brody Froese (118) also competed for Central Christian.

In Class 2A,&nbsp;Hutchinson-Trinity Catholic sits in seventh place held Tuesday at Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson.

The Celtics carded a team score of 340, paced by sophomore Miles Blaylock, who fired an 81 to tie for 22nd overall. Sophomore Tyler Casebolt followed closely with an 82, while senior Lincoln Barnes added an 84.&nbsp;

Syracuse leads the team standings after a strong collective effort, posting a 301 behind four golfers in the top 10. Salina Sacred Heart sits in second with a 311, and Hoxie is third at 322.

In Class 3A,&nbsp;Hesston senior Grant Waterson fired a 1-under-par 71 to sit in second place after Tuesday’s opening round at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course.

Waterson trails Wichita-Collegiate freshman Landon Langston, who leads the field with an even-par 70 heading into Wednesday’s final round.

Hesston sophomore Austin Penner posted an 82 and sits in a tie for 28th. The Swathers did not field a full team, but Waterson remains in strong contention for the individual state title.

Kingman senior Kory Meireis also delivered a solid round, carding a 78 to finish in a tie for 16th. Halstead did not have any golfers finish inside the top 40 after the first round.

In the team race, Wichita-Collegiate leads narrowly with a 315, just one stroke ahead of Wichita-Trinity Academy (316). Sabetha (326) and Marysville (330) round out the top four.

In Class 4A,&nbsp;Buhler senior Drew DeMeyer fired an even-par 72 to finish the opening round tied for fifth at the Class 4A boys state golf championship, held Tuesday at Sand Creek Station Golf Course.

DeMeyer’s round helped the Crusaders to a team total of 332, placing them sixth in the standings heading into Wednesday’s final round. Sophomore Zach Chance added a 76 (T14), while Nick Chance shot 80 (T24) to bolster Buhler’s team effort.

Pratt was led by senior Grant McAtee, who carded a 74 and sits in a tie for ninth place individually. Freshman Beau Ferrell added an 81 (T24) for the Greenbacks, who are currently tied for ninth in the team standings with Fort Scott at 344.

Wamego sits atop the leaderboard with a 309, followed by Topeka-Hayden (316), Bishop Miege (323), and Andale (325). Wamego also placed three golfers in the top five individually, led by Regan Kueker (2nd), Breckin Miller (4th), and Kaden Tyner (T5).

In Class 5A, Hutchinson saw it's two golfers not place. Senior Mitchell Rice shot a 12-over-par 83 and senior Alex Haas finished 20-over-par 91.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Elly De La Cruz hit two long home runs, Brady Singer pitched seven strong innings against his former team and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Kansas City Royals 7-2 on Tuesday night.

De La Cruz hit a 436-foot shot to center in the fourth inning that tied the score at 2 against Jonathan Bowlan, then a go-ahead&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Reds/status/1927530977221304392">451-foot drive into the right-center fountain in the sixth</a>&nbsp;off Taylor Clarke (1-1). De La Cruz has 11 home runs this season. He tied Pete Rose's team record for switch-hitters with five multihomer games, including two this year.

Singer (6-3), acquired from the Royals in November, allowed two runs and seven singles.

Tyler Stephenson homered in the second, but Kyle Isbel and Jonathan India had RBI single in the botton half.

TJ Friedl singled to lead off the eighth inning and scored from first on an infield squibber. Pitcher John Schreiber's rushed throw bounced into right field for an error. De La Cruz was walked intentionally before Schreiber walked Stephenson and Spencer Steer.

Singer retired 14 of his last 16 batters and matched his season high for innings.

Wichita scores double-digit runs for the sixth time in 2025 as a part of their fourth shutout of the season.
<a href="https://www.milb.com/player/aaron-rozek-702065">Aaron Rozek</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.milb.com/player/pierson-ohl-701487">Pierson Ohl</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.milb.com/player/jaylen-nowlin-701549">Jaylen Nowlin</a>&nbsp;combined for a shutout against the Drillers. Rozek earned the win to improve to 3-1 with the Wind Surge this season. Wichita&rsquo;s manager Brian Dinkelman followed with Ohl, who struck out six, and Nowlin, who threw a scoreless ninth, out of the bullpen.
Fedko laced a two-run homer, his team-leading ninth long ball, to the Tulsa bullpen in right-center in the top of the second. The Wind Surge center fielder proceeded to tie for the Texas League lead by leaving the yard on a solo shot toward the left field corner two innings later, 3-0 Wichita.

WICHITA, Kan. -&nbsp;Wichita State men's basketball head coach&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/paul-mills/1241" rel="smarttag" rev="1241">Paul Mills</a></dfn>&nbsp;announced the hiring of Josh Eilert as a new assistant coach Tuesday afternoon. Eilert&nbsp;replaces the assistant coach position that was previously held by&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/quincy-acy/1243" rel="smarttag" rev="1243">Quincy Acy</a></dfn>. "<dfn><a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/quincy-acy/1243" rel="smarttag" rev="1243">Quincy Acy</a></dfn>&nbsp;was a wonderful addition to our staff when I became the head coach," Mills said. "He's a phenomenal person and teacher and I couldn't be happier for him as he leaves Wichita to spend more time with his family and pursue other opportunities." Eilert&nbsp;is no stranger to the state of Kansas and college coaching with more than two decades of experience at the Power 4 level. He comes to Wichita State after a season at Utah where he was an assistant coach, and even closed the 2024-25 season as the interim head coach for the final six games.&nbsp;Eilert ventured out to Salt Lake City after spending the previous 17 seasons at West Virginia (2007-24) in various capacities, most recently serving as the interim head coach for the 2023-24 season. During his time in Morgantown, the Mountaineers earned 11 NCAA Tournament berths &ndash; including a Final Four appearance in 2010 and five NCAA Sweet 16s. "I'm excited to welcome Coach Eilert to Wichita," Mills said.&nbsp;"He is a Kansas native and has been involved with high level basketball at every step along his basketball journey from Kansas State, West Virginia and Utah. He is a coach that other coaches and administrators have raved about when I spoke with people who have seen Josh's work firsthand. He comes here as a proven teacher and leader.&nbsp;The more time I was able to visit with Coach Eilert and speak to others about him, it was evident to me and our staff that he was a person we wanted to be a part of what we are building here in Wichita. 🏀 Paul Mills adds Osborne native Eilert to coaching staff

Two members of the Hutchinson Community College softball team earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region honors on Tuesday.
Sophomore pitcher&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/tomlinson_morgan_0v0v">Morgan Tomlinson</a>&nbsp;and freshman center fielder&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/kruger_kaibryn_wwcp">Kaibryn Kruger</a>&nbsp;were named to the NFCA NJCAA Division I All-West Region second team. They were two of nine Jayhawk Conference players to earn all-region honors.

MORGAN TOMLINSON (So./P) &ndash; 1st Team Tomlinson became the first 20-game winner for the Blue Dragons since Holly Kelley in 2016, posting a record of 21-7 with a 3.18 earned run average. In KJCCC play &ndash; where she made 15 starts and eight relief appearances &ndash; Tomlinson was 16-3 with a 3.11 ERA.
The sophomore from Harveyville, Kansas, had 131 strikeouts in 147 1-3 innings pitched this season. She walked only 24 batters and allowed 149 hits with opposing batters hitting only .251 off of her.
Tomlinson pitched two combined no-hitters this season and had six complete games with two complete-game shutouts.
In three-straight starts this past season, Tomlinson set new single-game career highs in strikeouts with eight against Colby on March 17, nine against Garden City on March 18 and 10 against Dodge City on March 20.
Tomlinson completed her career with a 37-10 record and a 3.14 earned-run average. She finished with 180 strikeouts in 236 innings. Her 37 wins rank fourth on the Blue Dragon career list and her 180 strikeouts are 10th.
Tomlinson was also named all-KJCCC first-team earlier this month.
KAIBRYN KRUGER (Fr./CF) &ndash; 2nd Team The freshman from Silver Lake was second on the team in batting this season with a .456 average. Kruger was 73 for 160 with 13 doubles, six triples and seven home runs. She drove in 51 runs and scored 76, which is third-most in Blue Dragon single-season history.
Kruger was 40 of 42 in stolen-base attempts this season, which is No. 3 on the Blue Dragon single-season list.
Kruger matched&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/backhaus_bailey_44zk">Bailey Backhaus</a>&nbsp;for the longest hitting streak this season at 16 and she will carry a 43-game streak of reach base into next season.
Kruger had 24 multi-hit games, including a season-high four hits against Seward County on March 12.

The first All-American in school history when she earned the designation a year ago, this is the lone first-team designation in Bernat's career as she was placed on the second team by the WGCA and third team by&nbsp;Golfweek&nbsp;in 2023-24. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/news/2025/5/1/womens-golf-bernat-named-big-12-womens-golfer-of-the-year-bert-earns-all-big-12-honors">2024-25 Big 12 Women's Golfer of the Year</a>, Bernat set the single-season program record for scoring average at 70.08 thanks to shooting in the 60s in 18 of her 39 rounds (46.2%). Bernat finished in the top five in eight of her 13 starts, while she did not finish outside of the top 20. Additionally, she finished at even par or under par in all 13 events. Bernat, a product of Castellon, Spain, closed out her collegiate career by finishing in the top 10 in each of the final five regular-season events &ndash; including a victory at the MountainView Collegiate &ndash; before winning the NCAA Lexington Regional and a tying for 14th at the NCAA Championship. A former transfer from Tulane, Bernat finished her two-year K-State career by ranking first in program history in scoring average (70.44) and second in wins (5), top-five (14) and top-10 (16) finishes. She also holds 10 of the school's top-25 rounds and 13 of the program's top-25 54-hole scores. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/news/2025/4/5/womens-golf-victory-in-augusta-k-states-bernat-captures-augusta-national-womens-amateur-title">2025 Augusta National Women's Amateur Champion</a>, Bernat will compete in the U.S. Women's Open this Thursday through Sunday at Erin Hills Golf Course in Erin, Wisconsin.</div>

Scot Pollard was standing in Gasoline Alley at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and trying not to cry.

The NBA champion and “Survivor” contestant was talking about meeting the family of Casey Angell, whose heart was now beating inside Pollard's chest. Angell's sister brought a stethoscope.

“She touched my chest. She listened and she started crying. She said, ‘Hey, Bubba,’ because that’s what she used to call him,” Pollard said. “And we all lost it. And I’m losing it right now.”

A first-round draft pick who took Kansas to the NCAA Sweet 16 four years in a row and won it all with the 2008 Boston Celtics, Pollard was virtually bedridden by 2024, unable to walk around the block or even conduct an interview without needing a rest because of a virus that had weakened his heart.

Since receiving the life-saving transplant last winter, he has dedicated himself to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/heart-transplant-scot-pollard-discharged-3b2b1b8136f1617b9ad07ecfbc3a584b">raising awareness of organ donation</a>, a mission that earned him the honor of serving as the Grand Marshal for the Indy 500 Festival Parade on Saturday. Angell's family rode along on the float with him.

“Any time we get to see them and be around them is a great moment,” Pollard said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. “But also just to be able to share this experience of being grand marshal with them, and be part of their lives.”

At 6-foot-11 and a playing weight of 260 pounds, Pollard inherited his size from his father along with a genetic heart condition that doctors say was triggered by a virus that left him no other choice but a transplant. The problem would be&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/scot-pollard-nba-survivor-heart-transplant-d8b34f86b1a6f027ef8210c3a6ab0268">finding a donor</a>&nbsp;organ big enough to pump blood throughout his NBA center-sized body.

Six hundred miles away, in East Texas, Angell was on life support with pneumonia brought on by a respiratory illness.

“We made the decision that we were letting go, and they came to us within about 30 minutes and asked about donation,” said Megan Tyra, who works as an administrator at the hospital where her brother died. “We saw the heart leave, going out the door, and all we were told was that it was headed to Tennessee.”

To protect everyone’s privacy, organ recipients can only learn about their donors – and vice versa – through a system that requires both sides to agree. Pollard was told that most people don't hear back, but he wrote a note anyway. Angell’s family responded.

(In addition to his heart, Casey Angell’s corneas and his kidneys were donated. The family was told the other recipients were two 17-year-olds and a 48- and a 49-year-old; they have not heard from any of the other recipients.)

“Casey was a nosy dude. He always wanted to be in the know,” Tyra said with a laugh. “And so when we got that first letter from Scot, … we were grateful that Scot wanted to know about Casey. Him and (his wife) Dawn have been so sweet and kind, (saying) ‘You’re part of our family now.’”

Tyra was there with her husband, Clint; Angell’s wife, Pam; and her son William, who is now 13. Pollard brought his family — and cameras to record the event for a TV documentary.

“To say the least, it was a tad bit overwhelming,” Tyra said in a telephone interview this week from Indianapolis. “We never did this for anything other than who Casey was, a helper, a guy who would help anyone do anything. So it’s a little bit surreal, a little bit overwhelming. But (Scot) and Dawn make it easy.”

Pollard, who turned 50 in February a few days after celebrating his one-year anniversary with the new heart, said that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/scot-pollard-heart-transplant-donor-1de85b7ca3321de6f3a813d41846502b">since receiving the transplant</a>&nbsp;he has suffered from survivor's guilt — the doubt that he was worthy of such a gift: “It’s a challenge, because I’ve got to live right. There’s a face, and I know what he looks like and I know who he was, and the family. And so there's that pressure.”

Angell’s family, he said, helped save him twice.

“There were a lot of days I was crying like, ‘I don’t know if I deserve this,’” Pollard said. “And then when they responded, and I got to know them, and I learned a lot more about Casey, it definitely helped. He has helped a whole lot with the healing. Not just emotionally, obviously.”

Pollard is hoping the documentary and the other media attention he brings as a former pro athlete will persuade people to consider organ donation. Last month, he spoke at the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation and received a standing ovation from a convention center full of doctors, including his own; that night, he attended a Celtics playoff game and got another big cheer when he received a shoutout on the scoreboard.

Pollard, who spent two of his 11 NBA seasons with the Indiana Pacers and settled near Indianapolis, was booked for a breakfast with the governor as part of the Indy 500 festivities this weekend along with some other meet-and-greets. He will watch the race — known as the Greatest Spectacle in Racing — on Sunday in a suite with Angell's family.

“We're excited about the fact that we’re honoring Casey, and who Casey was. So it’s all about Casey, and the sacrifice Casey made,” Tyra said. “We’re grateful that Scot wanted us to meet, and wants us to be a part of this and that he’s doing so much for organ donation. It’s amazing.

“You know, we never thought our little smalltown selves would be here for the Indy 500," she said. “But here we are.”

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Kansas State added another high-profile transfer under head coach Jerome Tang, securing a commitment from Memphis standout PJ Haggerty for the upcoming season.

Haggerty, who recently withdrew from NBA Draft consideration, chose the Wildcats despite widespread speculation that NC State was the favorite. The 6-foot-3 guard was ranked the No. 3 overall transfer in the portal by On3 and was considered the top available player at the time of his commitment.

A former American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Haggerty earned second-team All-America honors from multiple outlets during the 2024-25 season. He averaged 22 points, six rebounds and four assists per game for Memphis while shooting 36% from beyond the arc.

Though K-State’s landing of Haggerty came as a surprise, it continues a recent trend of movement between the Wildcats and Tigers. Nae’Qwan Tomlin finished his college career at Memphis after being dismissed from Kansas State, and Dug McDaniel transferred to Memphis earlier this offseason.

Haggerty has now played for three Division I programs. He began his career at TCU before transferring to Tulsa, where he averaged 21 points per game, and then to Memphis. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

Kansas State has consistently landed marquee transfers under Tang, starting with Keyontae Johnson in his first year. That was followed by Tylor Perry and Arthur Kaluma, and last year’s group included McDaniel, Ugonna Onyenso, Achor Achor and Coleman Hawkins.

Haggerty is expected to lead the Wildcats’ backcourt alongside Andrej Kostic and Nate Johnson.

LAWRENCE, Kan. &ndash;&nbsp;Kansas baseball has been selected for the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship for the first time since 2014 after earning an at-large berth on Monday. The Jayhawks will head on the road as a No. 2 seed and play the No. 3-seeded Creighton Bluejays in the Fayetteville Regional on Friday, May 30 at 7 p.m. CT at Baum-Walker Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+. &nbsp; Kansas is in an NCAA Regional for the sixth time in program history and the first under Big 12 Coach of the Year&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://kuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/dan-fitzgerald/871" rel="smarttag" rev="871">Dan Fitzgerald</a></dfn>. &nbsp; "Incredibly proud," Fitzgerald said. "It's exactly what we came here to do and more. Coming into this year we knew that we were a regional team. It was just about going out and executing. If you think about how we did execute, it was pretty fantastic. We won the games we were supposed to win and the times that we stubbed our toe, you can count them. This is incredibly fulfilling." &nbsp; KU plays Creighton in its first game of the Fayetteville Regional. Creighton won the BIG EAST regular season and tournament championships with an overall record of 41-14, including 17-4 in BIG EAST play. Despite the advantage in the series, Kansas has won each of the last six meetings between the two teams. All six of those matchups have happened in Lawrence and the most recent time the teams played was March 29, 2023, when Kansas won 3-1. &nbsp; Kansas will enter the NCAA Tournament with its best record in a regular season in school history at 43-15, including a 20-10 mark in Big 12 play this season. The 43 wins for Kansas this season are tied for the second most in program history and the 20 conference wins were a school record. KU had seven conference series wins and five conference series sweeps, both program bests. &nbsp; The Jayhawks are the only team in the country with at least 43 overall wins, 20 conference wins and 20 true road wins. KU is tied for the second most wins of any power conference team in the nation and finished with more overall wins than any team in the Big 12. The 20 road wins also established a new school record. &nbsp; This season, Kansas has broken numerous program records with another one of those being home runs. KU has hit 100 home runs this season, shattering the school record for homers in a season, which was 75. In addition to home runs, the Jayhawks broke the program record for walks in a season and currently have 363 free passes. MANHATTAN, Kan. &ndash;&nbsp;The Kansas State baseball team received an at-large bid to the 2025 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship on Monday, as the Wildcats were selected as the No. 3 seed at the Austin Regional. K-State (31-24) was selected as the No. 3 seed in the Austin Regional and will take on the second-seeded UTSA Roadrunners (44-13) on Friday, May 30, at 6 p.m. CT at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. It will be the program's sixth NCAA Tournament appearance and second straight, the first time earning back-to-back selections since 2010-11. It is also the second appearance in the&nbsp;<dfn><a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/pete-hughes/2603" rel="smarttag" rev="2603">Pete Hughes</a></dfn>&nbsp;era. Overall, the Wildcats are 9-6 in regional play after sweeping the Fayetteville Regional last season. &nbsp;&nbsp; The Austin Regional will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the ESPN app, while radio coverage is available on the K-State Sports Network.
