MAIZE, Kan. (AP) — Maize South showed why it is considered one of the top teams in Class 5A, sweeping Hutchinson High in girls and boys basketball Tuesday night at Maize South High School.

The Mavericks jumped out to quick double-digit leads in both games and never let the Salthawks recover, cruising to a 57-27 win in the girls contest and a 69-44 victory in the boys game.

Girls Recap:

Maize South wasted little time asserting control, building an early lead and steadily pulling away before using a running clock in the fourth quarter.

Hutchinson was led by Danai Morgan, who scored 19 points, but the depth and pressure of the Mavericks proved too much for the Salthawks to overcome, particularly in the second half. Hutchinson (7-8) will now travel to Salina South on Friday to take on the Cougars with the tip-off set for 6pm.

Boys Recap:

The night followed a similar script in the boys game. Hutchinson struggled to score early, with only Lamar Govain and Larry Jeremiah Jr. finding the basket in the first half. The Salthawks trailed 31-12 at intermission.

Hutchinson hung around early in the second half before Maize South pulled away behind Washburn University commit Cy Stucky, who got untracked after halftime and finished with a game-high 15 points.

Govain led Hutchinson with 24 points, while Jeremiah added key minutes and 13 points. The Mavericks controlled the tempo down the stretch to seal the win.

Washburn head coach and Hutchinson alum Brett Ballard was in attendance and praised both Stucky and Govain, according to Hutchinson head coach Bryan Miller, after the game.

With the loss, Hutchinson dropped to 5-10 on the season. The Salthawks will look to bounce back Friday when they travel to Salina South to try to avenge an earlier season loss to the Cougars.
