KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is expected to receive a six-game suspension from the NFL for his involvement in a 2024 high-speed crash, according to multiple reports.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday that the league plans to discipline Rice for violating its personal conduct policy, with the suspension beginning at the start of the regular season.

Earlier this month, Rice was believed to be facing a Sept. 30 disciplinary hearing, leading insiders to speculate his punishment might not take effect until after that date. Schefter’s latest report raises questions about whether the timeline has been moved up.

If the six-game suspension holds, Rice would return Oct. 19 in Week 7, when the Chiefs host the Las Vegas Raiders at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Rice was arrested in connection with a crash in which he was allegedly driving 119 mph while racing another vehicle. Multiple people were injured, but no fatalities were reported. He later posted bond.

The league held off on discipline until the legal process concluded. Rice pleaded guilty to two felony charges in July, clearing the way for the NFL to issue its ruling. Reports indicated the league initially considered a longer suspension that could have stretched into double-digit games.

A free shuttle sponsored by the K-State Union and Housing and Dining Services is available to fans with free parking in the K-State Parking Garage. The shuttle begins two hours prior to kickoff from the south circle on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive between the K-State Parking Garage and the Union. (AP) —&nbsp;The NCAA is weighing a rule that would require incoming Division I athletes to disclose name, image and likeness (NIL) deals from high school or junior college to the NIL Go clearinghouse established under the $2.8 billion&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ncaa-house-settlement-aa3169056e8194aeebf34495641bce0b">House settlement</a>.

Athletes would report all non-institutional deals dating to the first day of their junior year. Junior college transfers would report deals from the date of initial enrollment at a two-year college. All reporting of previous deals would be due to the College Sports Commission upon enrollment.

NIL compensation at the high school level has rapidly expanded in recent years. At least 40 states allow high school students to earn money off their celebrity status. Alabama, Michigan and Ohio are among the states that have strict restrictions, including Texas, which prohibits athletes under 17 from pursuing deals.

The proposed rule stems from the House settlement, which allows institutions effective July 1 to share millions with athletes directly but requires reporting of any third-party deal exceeding $600. NIL Go, developed by Deloitte and overseen by the CSC, evaluates whether deals reflect fair market value and serve a valid business purpose, a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nil-ncaa-house-settlement-b8018851c517b9cbf22a1d204967a3b0">topic of some controversy.</a>

The potential rule aims to prevent pay-for-play deals between prospective athletes and boosters or school-affiliated entities. The exact consequences of failing to comply are still being determined, but lost eligibility is a possibility.

“It’s unclear what the discipline would be for athletes or third parties that violate these rules, just like it’s just not entirely clear what the discipline will be for current college athletes,” said Gabe Feldman, director of sports law at Tulane University. “The emphasis certainly seems to be on not unduly harming the athlete themselves and the team, whereas in the past, if an athlete had received an improper benefit, there could be significant repercussions.”

A tidal wave of lawsuits could stem from a new rule, but according to Feldman, the NCAA tends to like its odds – a recurring theme leading up to the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ncaa-settlement-opt-outs-8689d58826e7ace7e9ec2f4b06c6ace3">settlement approval</a>.

“The idea was that given how much money athletes would be making under these new rules, very few athletes would have incentive to sue,” Feldman said. “Even though there is still the risk of antitrust litigation, the risk is much smaller because the athletes are getting such significant compensation. But there is no guarantee that athletes can’t sue.”

Language in the House settlement kept the door open for future rule proposals, including “specifying that the NCAA and/or the conference defendants prohibit NIL payments by associated entities or individuals (individually or collectively) to current or prospective student-athletes..” But that may leave loopholes.

The Chiefs were throttled 31-9 by Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021 and the following season they lost at home in the AFC championship to Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals.

Then they reached three consecutive Super Bowls, winning twice.

Their comeback in 2025 could rest on Travis Kelce’s bounce-back.

The four-time All-Pro tight end trimmed down considerably since the end of last season, when he was last seen walking dejectedly off the turf at the Superdome in New Orleans after the Chiefs were dismantled by the Eagles.

“He’s svelte right now. He looks like he’s 20,” Reid said.

Some had speculated the lopsided loss to the Eagles in February might drive Kelce to retire, but the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/taylor-swift-travis-kelce-engaged-d585627eb98b69428ce206a2c8a9cb7d">newly engaged</a>&nbsp;star is back and ready to serve as Mahomes’ top target once again.

Payton hasn’t been shy about predicting great things for the Broncos this year, telling people he has one of his better teams all-time and declaring Nix among the top handful of quarterbacks in the NFL.

Much of that optimism stems from the fortification of an already stout defense.

The Broncos lured safety Talanoa Hufanga and linebacker Dre Greenlaw from the San Francisco 49ers in free agency and used their first-round draft pick on former University of Texas star Jahdae Barron, who won the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back and was a consensus All-American.

Linebacker Alex Singleton, returning from a torn ACL that sidelined him most of last season, said Greenlaw has brought a new attitude to Denver’s defense.

“I love every single day coming to work with him,” Singleton said. “It’s been a ton of fun. He plays fast, he plays violent, physical — everything you want out of a linebacker.”

Justin Herbert ready for next step with Harbaugh

The Chargers are aiming to win the division for the first time since 2009 following Harbaugh’s first season in which LA returned to the playoffs and Justin Herbert threw just three interceptions all year.

Herbert shouldn’t have any opening-day jitters when the Chargers host the Chiefs in Week 1 in São Paulo, Brazil, not after playing in the preseason for the first time in his career.

The 27-year-old quarterback entering his sixth season went 2 of 5 for 46 yards while playing the opening series against the Rams.

Herbert had never played in an exhibition game before over his first five NFL seasons, but the Chargers’ $262.5 million quarterback asked for some limited action in this outing to get some work with the Bolts’ revamped offense, which is now missing starting left tackle Rashawn Slater.

“I wanted to go out there and see the pass rush,” said Herbert, who was sacked once by the Rams. “In practice as a quarterback you don’t always get the true feeling of a pass rush so I thought it would be helpful.”

When Herbert was a rookie in 2020, the preseason was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. By 2021, Herbert was coming off a stellar rookie year and then-Chargers coach Brandon Staley didn’t want to risk an injury during exhibition play. Staley maintained that approach in 2023. Last year, Herbert was in a walking boot with a plantar fascia injury in his right foot that caused him to miss nearly three weeks of training camp.

Carroll, Smith aim to repeat Seattle success in Las Vegas

Tom Brady’s fingerprints are all over the revamped Las Vegas Raiders, who have made significant changes to their team structure. Owner Mark Davis has given minority owner Brady more control, and Brady influenced the hiring of Carroll as coach and John Spytek as general manager, and the pair acquired Smith and drafted running back Ashton Jeanty to revamp the offense.

Carroll spent 14 seasons in Seattle, going 137-89-1 and putting together double-digit victories eight times over a nine-year stretch, reaching two Super Bowls and winning one.

Smith revitalized his career with the Seahawks, signing in 2019 as the backup and then becoming the starter in 2022. He was selected AP Comeback Player of the Year when he led the league with a 69.8% completion percentage and threw for 4,282 yards and 30 touchdowns.

“Our strengths are that this is a very coachable group,” Knoche said. “They work hard and are willing to play the position I ask them.”

She added, “I think the underclassmen are going to be a fun group to watch. What excites me most is watching the girls develop and find their flow together — and getting that first win of the season and watching them celebrate.”

Freshman Madison Pugh is expected to contribute right away as Fairfield looks to gain experience through the season.

Head coach Diana Schutte (21st season, 420–278 career) leads the defending Class 3A state champions, who finished 43–2 in 2024.

The Dragons return heavy hitters in Katharine Engel (395 kills, 69 aces, 302 digs, All-State) and Bailey Bernal (481 kills, 271 digs, 1st Team All-State), along with versatile Jordy Schroeder (177 kills), Daynica Ewer, Piper Schroeder and Annie Williams.

Halstead must replace graduated setter Dalaina Schutte and defensive specialist Sloane Linton, while libero Piper Schroeder is still recovering from an ACL injury. Even so, the Dragons bring championship experience and strong leadership with Engel and Bernal at the net.

Newcomers expected to step in include Ainsley Farmer and Tess Williams.

Second-year head coach Katie Wendler returns four starters in Avery Brawner, Hadley Idacavage, Sierra Yoder and Mayzie Warden.

“Our biggest strength is a solid core, combined with some new upcoming varsity players,” Wendler said. “The key to unlocking our full potential is staying confident and rising above the pressure. If we come together and play as one team, there’s no doubt we’ll be a force to watch this season.”

Warden, the senior libero, has surpassed 1,500 career digs, while Idacavage has tallied over 500 assists in each of the past two seasons. Wendler added, “We will be young and fun to watch. We have some really scrappy up-in-comers that will help us on both the offensive and defensive side of things. It should be a very exciting season!”

Newcomers to watch include Brooke Loop, Rilynn Patry and Lily Wicky.

First-year head coach Delice Downing, a veteran of the college ranks and two-time NJCAA national champion coach, takes over a program that returns Maci Rhodes, Cecilia Williams, Callie Yoder and Jacy Proctor.

“Coming off a great season we are hungry to compete for the league title, Sub-state title and have a ball at the State Tournament,” Downing said. “We are the sleeper team!”

She praised her group’s depth and serving ability: “We could for sure be the strongest serving team and serve receive team in the league… we have great depth, VB IQ, tons of grit and will be trained at the highest level.”

“I love the hunger and fire this team brings to the court day in and day out,” she added. “Grit! Grind! Respect! is our motto! Watch out, because these girls want it!”

Newcomers expected to contribute include Addyson Reif, alongside a strong sophomore class.

Head coach Josie Armstrong returns three key players in Myka Thompson, Bryten Ashcraft and Lynnea Alvarez.

“We have a talented setter, Myka Thompson, who runs an efficient offense,” Armstrong said. “She’s an incredible leader on and off the court as well.”

Armstrong also highlighted her seniors’ leadership: “I am excited about our level of experience this year… We will rely on our seniors for leadership. They are great role models on and off the court.”

Newcomers expected to contribute include Ella Fredrick and Aah’Lice Jackson.

Head coach Kat Russell (43–3 overall, 16–0 district in 2024) brings back a stacked lineup led by Suttyn Harris, Kenna Woods, Morgan Froese, Adi Alcala, Taylor Froese, Ellie Thimmesch and Allison Schrag.

“We are all very excited for our season to start,” Russell said. “All my girls have worked so hard this summer. They are extremely dedicated young ladies.”

Russell praised Utah commit, Harris’ leadership — “Her leadership on and off the court is crucial for our success” — and noted Woods is “looking better than ever” after injury. She called Froese “a powerhouse in the middle” and said Alcala is “a pitbull in the back row.”

Newcomers expected to contribute include Maddison Parson, Kora McClellan and Olivia Brunk.

Head coach Kim Rolfs (450–159 career) returns a veteran group including Arika Feldman, Havana Olander, Lucy Wright, Addie Strecker, Evie Look, Saelyn Raleigh, Avery Lafferty, Macy Schubert and Kate Hendrickson.

“Our seniors will definitely be key in our leadership and discipline to work every day to better our team,” Rolfs said. “What will separate us from others will be our ability to celebrate each other’s success and put the team’s success first.”

Rolfs also praised sophomore Macy Schubert: “She was a steady consistent player last year and I see her standing out a bit more this season.”

Newcomers include a promising freshman class, continuing the momentum of a senior group chasing their fourth straight state championship.

Veteran head coach Christy Doile enters her 20th season (573–222 career) after leading McPherson to a 26–18 record and a fourth-place finish at the 2024 Class 4A State Tournament. The Bullpups also finished second to Buhler in the AVCTL Division III.

“We return two starters that have played every varsity point since their freshmen year, helping our program to 2nd and 4th place finishes at the 4A state tournament,” Doile said. “We have an experienced team with talent and depth in the program, and there are new kids eager to earn their time on the varsity court.”

Key returners include Brooke Doile (372 kills, 2nd team All-State), Ava Romero (299 kills, 1st team All-League), Rylie Whitfield (708 assists), Carmin Pavlovich and Adelyn Barrow.

Newcomers and upperclassmen expected to contribute include Karsen Burris, Kynslie Minns, Elley Paulsen, Jersey Alexander and Karlie (OP).

The Bullpups will also navigate the challenge of being temporarily displaced from the Roundhouse due to flooding. “No matter where we play or practice, we are excited to compete, exceed potential and make some great memories together in 2025,” Doile said.

Longtime small-school powerhouse coach Trish Wade takes over at Nickerson after 17 years and three state championships at St. John. Wade owns more than 420 career victories and was inducted into the Barton Community College Sports Hall of Fame for her standout playing career.

“I told the girls, we’re not just going to lose anymore,” Wade said. “If we’re going to change the culture, it starts with believing we can win again. I believe that you can build a program off of discipline, heart, hustle and the mindset of a competitor.”

Wade inherits a team that went 12–25 in 2024, but she sees strong potential in leaders Delaney Childs and Denae Engelland. “They’re leaders, and they’re coachable,” she said. “The whole group has responded with a willingness to learn, and that’s where it all starts.”

Wade is joined by assistants Teresa Rush and Allie Frederick, and the Panthers will compete in a rugged CKL that includes defending state champion Halstead.

Veteran head coach Karen Stucky enters her 24th season with a career record of 619–219, leading a group that returns Kalyn Sampson, Alivia Burns, Lauren McGinn, Briella Steventon and Mya Tiede.

“We will have a great mix of veteran players and newcomers,” Stucky said. “I think we have a stronger front row presence and a really scrappy defense. We have some very good senior leaders so I expect them to lead us in a great direction this fall.”

She added, “I’m excited to build on last year’s trip to state. We have the pieces but need to put it all together.”

Newcomers expected to contribute include Ella Vondracek and Brooklyn Cox.

Head coach Lori Smith (74–34 in four years) returns key players in Chloe Garrett, Julia Wohler, Lydia Webb, Brynn Ayala and Allie Gray.

“We have a hardworking, great group of girls who have put in time this summer getting better,” Smith said. She noted the team will need to replace its go-to hitter from last season but believes others are ready to step up.

“It’s a great group of girls who have wonderful attitudes,” Smith added. “We have a strong senior class that’s ready to lead.”

Wade owns more than 420 career victories and was inducted into the Barton Community College Sports Hall of Fame for her standout playing career.</p><p>“I told the girls, we’re not just going to lose anymore,” Wade said. “If we’re going to change the culture, it starts with believing we can win again. I believe that you can build a program off of discipline, heart, hustle and the mindset of a competitor.”</p><p>Wade inherits a team that went 12–25 in 2024, but she sees strong potential in leaders Delaney Childs and Denae Engelland. “They’re leaders, and they’re coachable,” she said. “The whole group has responded with a willingness to learn, and that’s where it all starts.”</p><p>Wade is joined by assistants Teresa Rush and Allie Frederick, and the Panthers will compete in a rugged CKL that includes defending state champion Halstead.</p><h2>Sedgwick Cardinals</h2><p>Veteran head coach Karen Stucky enters her 24th season with a career record of 619–219, leading a group that returns Kalyn Sampson, Alivia Burns, Lauren McGinn, Briella Steventon and Mya Tiede.</p><p>“We will have a great mix of veteran players and newcomers,” Stucky said. “I think we have a stronger front row presence and a really scrappy defense. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Jalon Daniels was about to celebrate the first touchdown in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-jayhawks-football-stadium-ee58678fed10dda19d1d2c7b85c0493b">the rebuilt stadium at Kansas</a>&nbsp;when the pyrotechnics went off.

The Jayhawks never had such trappings when they played in crumbling Memorial Stadium, a century-plus-old concrete structure perched on the northern edge of campus. Heck, they didn’t even have a permanent tunnel to run out of on game day, instead entering the field through an inflatable alleyway that looked like part of a children’s bounce house.

“The fireworks after scoring touchdowns, I mean, that’s something that I was kind of like, ‘Yeah, I wish that we were able to do that earlier in my career,’” Daniels said later, after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/fresno-state-bulldogs-kansas-jayhawks-score-e2e3cef1b8c0837481a2b3c58fb119d4">the Jayhawks beat Fresno State 31-7 in their opener</a>&nbsp;on Saturday night.

Earlier in his career was a long time ago.

If there is anybody who can vouch for how far Kansas football has come over the past few years, it’s the sixth-year quarterback running the show. Daniels was recruited by then-coach Les Miles and part of a team in 2020 that didn’t win a single game during a freshman season shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic. And when Miles was fired, and Lance Leipold hired away from Buffalo to begin a vast rebuilding project, Daniels was expected to help lead the efforts.

Yet injuries derailed a career that at one point had Daniels on a short list of Heisman Trophy contenders. He appeared in just 18 games over a three-year stretch in which once-downtrodden Kansas managed to reach a pair of bowl games.

Daniels finally played a full season last year, throwing for 2,454 yards and 14 touchdowns. But the results were not what anyone expected. Forced to play their home games in the Kansas City metro area while their on-campus home was being rebuilt, the Jayhawks proceeded to start 1-5. with that victory coming against lower-level Lindenwood.

By the time the Jayhawks turned things around, and beat three straight ranked opponents, it was largely too late. They lost their regular-season finale to Baylor with a bowl berth on the line, and Daniels &amp; Co. headed into the offseason.

Thanks to injuries and the pandemic, though, the QB was granted a sixth season of eligibility. And with the reimagined stadium set to open last Saturday night, Daniels said the decision to come back for one more go-around was easy.

“I know when I first got here,” Daniels said, “this was a whole entire different thing. And I still thought it was amazing. So to be able to see the new (stadium), to be able to see the new tunnel, to be able to see the new locker room, be able to see all the new things that we’re able to enjoy — it means a lot to me.”

The stadium, with its lighting and premium spaces and fireworks, didn’t disappoint. And neither did Daniels, who merely went 18 of 20 for 176 yards and three touchdowns in less than a full game’s work against Fresno State.

“He’s as advertised,” said Cam Pickett, a transfer from Ball State, who hauled in two of the TD passes. “You know, I watched film of him. I was like, ‘Man, like, this dude makes some plays.’ And then I got to see him in person and it was great watching it.”

It wasn’t just Daniels’ near-perfect throwing performance, or eight carries for 47 yards, that impressed Leipold the most. It was the way Daniels was able to effortlessly direct an offense led by new coordinator Jim Zebrowski in its season debut.

“I thought he had great leadership,” Leipold said. “He was in command. He didn’t get rattled. He made people miss and made throws. Just everything you want. He just seemed really confident in what’s going on, and that’s what you need.”

Especially given what is coming on the horizon. The Jayhawks have another tuneup Friday night against Wagner, then head down Interstate 70 and across the state line for the renewal of the Border War against old Big 12 rival Missouri.

It’s the kind of high-profile game that Daniels wanted to be part of one last time.

Head coach Brian Johnston enters his 3rd year with the program, which is in just its third year of existence but has already qualified for state in each of its first two seasons.

The Swathers return five players, including Maci Kramer, Elizabeth Hosford, Wendy Roth, Brynn Thiesen and Chloe Vogt. “We have 3 players returning that made it to day 2 of state,” Johnston said. “I have some girls working hard this summer and with 3 returning from a day 2 state, I think we are capable of having another great year.”

Head coach Charlie Pierce leads a completely new-look Salthawk team with no varsity returners.

“We are a brand new team, with not one girl that has hit a shot in a varsity tournament,” Pierce said. “The girls are excited to get started and are willing to listen and work to get better. It will be a fun year.”

Newcomers expected to compete for varsity roles include Hannah Marcum, Bria Carlton, Audryee Soule, Reanna Ehling, Naddilyn Wellington and Jade Brislin.

Head coach Erika Householter enters her 6th season, joined by assistant Meagan Householter. The Greenbacks graduated a big senior class but return Hayden Riffey and Ava Simmons to anchor the lineup.

“Lost a big senior class but have some underclassman that have been working hard and are ready to step up,” Householter said. “The underclassmen having the opportunity to step up and who will make up the top six excites me most.”

Newcomers to watch include Alexis Simmons, Cambridge Rector and Iliana Craft.

⛳ Hutch Post-area girls golf previews

Looking destined to end in a draw, the outcome of the 2025 season opener for the No. 15-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's soccer took a sudden and thrilling turn on Monday night at Don Michael Field.

The Blue Dragons nearly flipped the entire field in 13 seconds and freshman forward Poppy Smith smashed a go-ahead goal with 12.2 seconds remaining to lift Hutchinson to its first-ever win over a ranked opponent in a season opener.

No. 15 Hutchinson defeated No. 12 Trinity Valley 2-1 for its fifth-straight season-opening victory.

Smith scored both goals for the Blue Dragons, becoming the 13th Blue Dragon to have multiple goals in a season opener. Olivia Tamaki and Anastasia Pokrandt were credited with assists.

Tied at 1-1 in the final minute of regulation, Trinity Valley was called for a foul deep in the Blue Dragon defensive end. With 25 seconds remaining, Pokrandt's free kick originated just 15 yards from the Hutchinson goal line. A Trinity Valley defender went up to head the Pokrandt kick just shy of midfield, but the ball skimmed of her and continued to go forward directly to the right foot of Smith, who went one on one with a Cardinal defender toward the goal. From 20 yards out, Smith unleashed a powerful low right-footed shot that got by diving TVCC goalkeeper Nikia van Middendorp for a 2-1 Hutchinson lead with 12.2 seconds remaining in the second half.

The Blue Dragons covered 105 yards in 12.8 seconds for the game-winning goal.

The game-winning goal at 89:12 of regulation time is the latest game-winning goal in Blue Dragon history. The previous latest goal came from Megan Reffett, who scored at the 87:01 mark for a 2-1 victory over Dodge City in 2006. This was the seventh game-winning goal scored in the final 5 minutes of a game in Blue Dragon history.

The Blue Dragons scored the first goal of the season in the 25th minute off a corner kick. Tamaki dropped the corner right in front of the goal and through a lot of traffic, Smith nailed a shot into the lower right corner for a 1-0 Dragon lead with 21:27 to play in the first half.

The Cardinals tied the game in the 75th minute, taking advantage of a misplayed clearing attempt by the Blue Dragons. Hadlee Farrow intercepted the clearing attempt and lobbed a shot from 40 yards out that got over the head of Blue Dragon keeper Evie Carvell for the game-tying goal with 25:07 to go in the second half, knotting the game at 1-1.

Carvell (1-0) finished with three saves in earning her first win in net for the Blue Dragons. Van Middendorp had eight saves for Trinity Valley.

The Blue Dragons out-shot Trinity Valley 10-4 in shots on goal and 20-7 overall.

The Blue Dragons will play Western Wyoming at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Don Michael Field. Trinity Valley will play Barton at 10 a.m. Wednesday, also at Don Michael Field.

Week 0 games caused a little movement in the first NJCAA Division I Football Rankings of the 2025 season.

The first poll of the regular season still has the Top 4 teams where they started in the preseason poll – Hutchinson at No. 1, Iowa Western at No. 2, Northwest Mississippi at No. 3 and Navarro at No. 4. The Blue Dragons received all 12 first-place votes. Those four teams did not play in Week 0.

Snow (1-0) and Georgia Military (1-0) swapped spots at Nos. 5 and 6. The Badgers rolled past the Utah Islanders to move into fifth place.

After losing to No. 7 Trinity Valley on Saturday, Dodge City fell out of the receiving votes column.

Garden City remains No. 7, Butler remains No. 14 and Coffeyville is receiving votes.

The Blue Dragons don't open their season until September 6 at New Mexico Military, which opens its season this Saturday against Community Christian College.

Hutchinson was picked No. 1 in the preseason ranking for the third time in program history.

The Blue Dragons extend their program record for longest consecutive weeks in the national poll with 49 weeks. The Dragons have been ranked in the top three of the NJCAA Rankings for 43 consecutive polls and have been ranked No. 1 in 38 of the 68 polls released in the Drew Dallas era.

CHICAGO (AP) — Shane Smith allowed one hit in a career-high seven innings, Korey Lee hit a two-run homer, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 7-0 on Monday night.

Smith (4-7) pitched into the seventh inning for the first time in his career, facing just 23 batters on 80 pitches.

Lee, in his first start since getting called up from Triple-A Charlotte, drove a shot over the left-field wall for his first home run of the season for a 5-0 lead in the fourth. Brooks Baldwin followed with a home run near the same spot for a six-run lead.

Chicago has won three straight games after losing 14 of 18.

Kansas City dropped to 13-10 in August. The Royals entered having scored at least five runs in 20 of 34 games (58.8%) since the All-Star break, tied with Milwaukee for the most in the majors.

Kansas City starter Noah Cameron (7-6) allowed six earned runs and eight hits in five innings.
