DODGE CITY – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team overcame a first-set loss to Eastern Wyoming on Thursday to win six-straight sets and earn victories over a pair of Region 9 opponents at the Victory Electric Classic on Thursday at Dodge City Community College.
The Blue Dragons defeated Eastern Wyoming for the second time in six days rallying to defeat the Lancers 23-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-18. The Dragons then followed with a 25-14, 25-16, 25-23 win over Trinidad State at the DC3 Student Events Center.
Hutchinson improves to 4-2 for the season. The Blue Dragons open Jayhawk Conference play on Monday at Seward County.
EASTERN WYOMING RECAP
Six days ago in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the Blue Dragons swept Eastern Wyoming 25-14, 25-13, 25-12. On Thursday night, the Dragons let a late first-set lead slip away and were down four points to the Lancers late in the second set before rallying to take the final three sets of the match.
Freshman outside hitter Giovanna Monteiro continued her strong start to the season with 15 kills on .429 hitting to lead the Blue Dragons. Monteiro posted her first career double-double with 14 digs.
Freshman Kelsi Maier as next with eight kills on .259 hitting. Julia Macedo and Addison Hansen had five kills each.
Freshman setter Klaudia Bilinksa had 25 assists, four digs and four service aces to match a season high for ace serves.
Freshman libero Ari Delgado finished with 11 digs while sophomore Clara Oliveira had nine digs.
The Blue Dragons had nine ace serves and six team blocks. Sophomore middle Mattie Galliher had a team-high three blocks. Lauren Vazquez, Monteiro and Maria Eduarda Diaz and two blocks each.
TRINIDAD STATE RECAP
The Blue Dragons dominated the first two sets against Trinidad State, but burned its second timeout of the third set trailing the Trojans 17-11. Hutchinson closed the set on a 14-6 run to complete the sweet.
Monteiro once again paced the Blue Dragon offense with 18 kills, hitting a season-high .567 on 30 attacks. Monteiro added eight digs and a service ace.
Galliher finished with five kills, three blocks and a career-high four ace serves.
Freshman Kennedy Green also had five kills on .333 hitting with two block assists.
Bilinksa posted 19 set assists and five digs. Luisa Richa had eight assists.
Delgado again led Hutchinson with nine digs and Oliveira had seven digs.
