Wilma M. Schumacher, 90, passed away on April 19, 2021 at Hospice House, Hutchinson, KS. She was born Jan. 17, 1931 on a farm in Grainfield, KS., the daughter of Joseph and Amalia (Rohr) Dinkel. 

Wilma graduated from Grainfield High School. She worked for USD 308 as a manager in school food service for 30 years. On August 16, 1948, she married Herbert Schumacher in Grainfield, KS. He died on April 17, 2003. Wilma was a member of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church and the Catholic Alter Society.

 Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herbert, four brothers, Joe, Ben, Rudy and Adolph Dinkel and a granddaughter, Amy Newboles. 

Survivors include her five children, 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, four step- great grandchildren; one brother Don Dinkel; and three sisters, Millie Baker, JoAnn Zerr and Betty Gagnon.

 A private service will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2021 with Father Mike Maybrier officiating. There will be no public visitation.&nbsp; Memorials may be made to St. Teresa’s Catholic Church and can be sent in care of Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave. Hutchinson, KS 67502.

Gladys Laverne Bagby passed away in Woodward, Oklahoma on April 16, 2021 at the age of 89. Gladys was born in Bison, KS. on July 20, 1931 to John J. and Emelia (Holstein) Scheuerman. 

She grew up in Otis, KS., along with her 12 siblings. Shortly after graduating from Otis High School, she went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. Gladys worked in several different positions for SWB before retiring after 36 years of service. 

On Sept. 27, 1965 she was united in marriage to Robert (Bob) Bagby. Bob and Gladys never had children of their own but loved their nieces and nephews dearly never missing a graduation, wedding, or reason to celebrate. She loved to travel, loved to eat sweets, and was always up for a shopping trip. In 2015, Gladys moved to an assisted living center in Woodward, Ok to be closer to family. She loved her new home and the friends she made at Providence Place. The family will forever be grateful for the excellent care they provided and her special friend and nurse, Alma. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob, and 11 of her siblings. 

Gladys is survived by one brother, Virgil Scheuerman and wife Irene from Weinfield, Ks, one sister-in- law, Sherry Scheuerman, Camdenton, Mo, and numerus nieces and nephews.

Carolyn Joyce Dority, 81, died April 18, 2021, at Pleasant View Home, Inman. She was born July 4, 1939, in Hutchinson, to William Robert and Lola Fern (Uncapher) Demoret.&nbsp;

Carolyn retired as custodian at Nickerson High School. She enjoyed crocheting, singing, and visiting with anyone she encountered, no matter if she knew them or they were a stranger. Carolyn loved the Lord and was a true prayer warrior, praying daily for her family and friends. She was of the Baptist faith, and will be greatly missed by her family.

On Aug. 31, 1956, she married Pastor Harvey Doyle Dority, in Hutchinson. He died Jan. 15, 2004, after they shared over 48 years of marriage.

Carolyn is survived by: children, Kimberly Hooker of Hutchinson, Debra Alumbaugh (Bill) of Larned, Vicki Lynn Dority of Hutchinson, and Mitchell Dority of Arkansas City; siblings, Daniel Demoret, Robert Demoret, and Sue Ellen Gore, all of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Sharon Marker (Brent), Serena Shea (Tommy), Nathan Hooker (Holly), Jessica MacMahon (David), and Ashley Manges (James); great-grandchildren, Gabriella, Jaclyn, Mackenzie, David, Sarah, Lexia, Chloe, Aleiya, Tommy, Blaine, Kolby, Kalie, Caitlin, and Clayton; and one great-great-grandson, to join the family in November.

Elvin “PeeWee” H. Wyer, 86, died April 19, 2021 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born February 20, 1935 in Plevna, the son of Verbal and Lucille Helm Wyer. A resident of Nickerson, he was a member of the Mid State Street Rods, a founding member of the Nickerson Boat Club, loved putting puzzles together, enjoyed restoring and working on street rods, woodworking, and leatherworking. He also loved his dog, Tillie. He was retired from Dillons and had served as a machinist in the Navy Reserves.

On May 22, 1954 he married Betty Lou Miller in Hutchinson. She passed away December 14, 2019.

Survivors include daughters, Kathy Knox, Wichita, Gay (Bret) Norquist, Wisconsin, and Molly (Brandon) Taggart, Nickerson; granddaughters, Camey Beasley, Nickerson, Julie, Lindsey, and Lacey; numerous great grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Patricia Hpengardner.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Keith Wyer; and a brother in law, James Hopengardner.

Per his wishes, cremation is planned. A car show for PeeWee will take place on Saturday, May 15, 2021 from 1-3PM at the Nickerson Community Center. Kevin L. Sollenberger, 71, passed away April 17, 2021, at hospice, in Delphos, KS after a long battle with multiple myeloma. He was the son of Gilbert L. and Thelma J. Sollenberger.&nbsp;

Kevin lived most of his life in the Nickerson and Hutchinson area, and attended schools in those communities. He was employed in farming and trucking throughout his life and was known to be an excellent mechanic. Kevin was a longtime member of the Great Plains Tractor Club and instrumental in maintaining the club’s pulling sled.

He is survived by: siblings, Janis Sollenberger of California, Randy (Paula) Sollenberger of Colorado, and Lisa (Tom) Harmon of Oklahoma; son, Damon Joswick of Texas; granddaughter, Elizabeth Joswick-Kemp of Colorado; and many loyal friends.

Kevin was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 2021, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5905 W. 4th, Hutchinson, with Pastor Gary Getting officiating.

Myron D. Jantz, age 71 of Cyrus died Monday, April 12, 2021 at the Stevens County Medical Center in Morris.&nbsp;

Myron Dale Jantz was born Oct. 14, 1949, to Harvey and Marian (Unruh) Jantz in Goessel, Kansas. He left this earth for a happier home on April 12, 2021. He was baptized into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite on Feb. 1, 1961. His faith was precious to him and he was faithful to the end.

Myron married Larinda Koehn on Sept. 3, 1971 in Lone Tree, KS. The two shared 49 years of marriage and to their union three sons and two daughters were born. They started life together in their home community of Moundridge, KS. A farming opportunity pulled them to Okolona, Mississippi in 1976. They farmed there for over 20 years before farming took a downturn. At that time, Myron turned to trucking. He hauled grain for local farmers until 2003 when an opportunity in Fleetwood, PA led him and Larinda to pull up deep heart ties and start a new adventure. In 2010, the pair again packed the moving truck and headed across the county to Cyrus, MN, where they spent 10 and a half years making new friends. There, Myron was employed as a truck driver for a local dairy until his retirement in Nov. 2019.

Myron didn't know a stranger. He loved family life and small children always brought a sparkle to his eye. He was a creative man. He was a natural engineer with metal and later in life turned to woodworking to occupy his time.

Myron was briefly working as a relief driver for Riverview Dairy when he was called from this life suddenly on the morning of April 12, 2021. The hearts of those who love him ache with loneliness, but each is left with a rich testimony of his love for Jesus.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Larinda of Cyrus; their five children, Pauline Cressman of Hancock, Greg (Deb) Jantz of Ogallala, NE, Mark (Kristin) Jantz of Lewellen, NE, Marshal (Teresa) Jantz of Scott City, KS, and Monica (Ezra) Slabaugh of Ault, CO; son-in-law, Chester Cressman of Stapleton, GA; and 17 grandchildren. He is also survived by his 11 siblings, Carolyn Nightingale, Winona (Wayne) Schmidt, Lowell (Evelyn) Jantz, Ron (Marie) Jantz, Arlan (Barbara) Jantz, Sharon (Albert) Miller, Karleen (Galen) Schmidt, Joyce (Gerald) Smith, David (Betty) Jantz, John (Loretta) Jantz, and Dan (Kandace) Jantz; along with his mother-in-law, Alvina Koehn; bother-in-law, Monroe (Ethel) Koehn, and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Koehn and Amy (Steve) Wenger; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Myron was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Lloyd Koehn; and one brother-in-law, Homer Nightingale.

Visitation for Myron will be on Thursday, April 15 from 3 to 5 p.m. and continuing from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Lake Haven Mennonite Church in rural Starbuck. Visitation will also be Friday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.at which time the funeral service will be held. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Moundridge, Kansas. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.

John Alvin Scherling, 74, of Wichita, KS, passed away April 16, 2021 surrounded by family.&nbsp;

He was born June 13, 1946, in Hutchinson, KS to Alvin and Louise Scherling.&nbsp;John graduated from Emporia State University and was a teacher and musical director at Buhler High School for over 20 years.&nbsp; He was also a musical accompanist at Southwestern College in Winfield, KS and taught music appreciation, various piano courses and piano accompaniment at Butler Community College in El Dorado, KS.&nbsp; John enjoyed vacationing in Palm Springs, cooking and spending time with his family.

John is survived by his husband, Steve Tuck, of 21 years; son, Mark, daughter-in-law, Lauren, grandson, Grant, granddaughters, Elyse, and Lena, of Cave Creek, AZ; daughter, Amy, son-in-law, Brandon, and granddaughter, Kinley, of Buhler; daughter, Julie, son-in-law, Ryan, and grandsons, Jackson and Austin, of Eagle, CO.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, April 22, 2021, at Buhler Municipal West Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Willmar Harder. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, at Elliott Mortuary.

Denise Colleen Crumble, 65 of Hutchinson KS., was called to join Heaven's army on Sunday, April 11, 2021. Denise is the daughter of Narvel and Patricia Harrod. 

Denise was a loving sister, wife, mother and grandmother. Denise loved to spend time traveling and spending time with her grandkids which she adored. She worked as a bartender for many years at Hooters in Hutchinson. She also worked for Jefferson City Correctional Facility and Algoa Correctional Facility in MO. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Monroe "Pepi" Crumble Jr., (2013); her parents and a brother, Bradford Harrod. 

Denise is survived by her two daughters Sharla Ann Bonds of Arkansas and Shannon Crumm of Hutchinson; seven grandchildren, Charles "Chucc" Crumble Jr., and Destiny Wilson of Hutchinson, Fauntella Mae Crumble of Florida, Cimitri Conley, Devin "Jai" (Christi) Conley, of Oklahoma, Boonzy Minor and Dalis Harrod of Mississippi. 

We cherish the wonderful memories of Denise and she will be greatly missed, cremation has taken place. As a celebration of life her remains will be scattered at the private Family Cemetery in Warren, Arkansas on Saturday, April 24, 2021. Hutchinson Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Lisa M. Ediger, 57, passed away on April 14, 2021 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson, KS. She was born May 23, 1963 in Hutchinson, KS., the daughter of Roland M. and Theresa M. (Engel) Ediger. 

Lisa graduated from Hutchinson High School and received her Associates Degree from Hutchinson Community College. She worked for Peels, State Beauty Supply, Lowen Sign, and Hutchinson Newspaper in the classified department and Potters Plumbing as an office manager. Lisa had a love for the Kansas City Chiefs. Lisa attended St. Teresa’s Catholic Church in her early years and later attended Westside Baptist Church. 

Lisa was preceded in death by her parents. 

Survivors include her three brothers, Michael L. (Yunhi C.) Ediger of Lawrence, KS., William D. (Tamara L.) Ediger and Anthony S. Ediger both of Hutchinson; one sister, Patricia A. Butler of Hutchinson; longtime friends Kathy and Garry Huddle); seven nieces, Nik and Kristin Butler, Dana Barker, Allison, Mary, Sarah and Katie Ediger; one great niece and numerous nephews.

Robert “Bobby” “Smiley” Orlin Middleton, 81, of Hutchinson, died April 15, 2021, at Hospice House. He was born Nov. 19, 1939, in Cromwell, Oklahoma, to Mart and Pearlie (Meeks) Middleton.

Bobby graduated from high school in Cromwell. In 1963, he began his service in the United States Army. Bobby worked for Eaton Corporation as a machinist for 37 and a half years. He was kind to everyone he met, with no exception, and very generous. If you had a meal with Bobby he would go out of his way to cover the check. He loved gardening, especially flowers and rose bushes. Bobby also had a vegetable garden, from which he was always giving produce to others.

He is survived by: sister, Evelyn Metzler (Lott), Hutchinson; niece, Lori Cox (Ivan), Hutchinson; nephews, Eddie Alexander (Donna) and David Alexander (Rita Corbin), both of Hutchinson; niece Angey Hohl, Arizona; great-nieces and nephews, Trey and Clancy Cox, Shelby and Mason Alexander, Emma Corbin, Isaac Alexander, Kirsten McCarthy, and Seuris Hohl.

Bobby was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, James Middleton; and sister, Nelda Jean Morphis.

Robert Conway “Bob” Hornbeck, 87, died April 14, 2021, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born July 27, 1933, in Chanute, to George and Jane (Hamill) Hornbeck.

Bob graduated from Hutchinson High School and worked over 25 years for Panhandle Eastern. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

On Aug. 13, 1955, he married Norma June Buckley, in Partridge. They shared over 62 years of marriage before her death on Jan. 17, 2018.

Bob is survived by: children, Phillip Hornbeck (Cindy) of Partridge and Phyllis Keffer (Doyle) of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Ben Hornbeck (Amber) of Hutchinson, Mollie Keffer of Kansas City, MO, and Josh Powell (Lindsay) of Hutchinson; great-grandchildren, Carter Hornbeck, and Jordan, Noah, Landyn, and Alissa Powell; brother, Wayne Hornbeck (Rachel) of Hutchinson: brother-in-law, Lyle Buckley (Athelyn) of Bella Vista, AR; sisters-in-law, Mary Love of Partridge and Mary Hornbeck of Hutchinson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ronald ‘Ron’ D. Proffitt, 72, passed away April 13, 2021, at Smoky Hill Rehabilitation Center, Salina. He was born April 22, 1948, in Sterling, to Gilbert Arlos and Twila ‘Jo’ (Fleming) Proffitt.

Ron was a 1966 graduate of Sterling High School. Following graduation, he served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1969. Ron was a member of the Sterling American Legion Post #128, Sterling, and The Father’s House Church, Hutchinson.

He was a model railroad train enthusiast. Ron was a member of the Rio Grande Southern railroad group and enjoyed collecting model trains and showing them to friends and family. His passion for being around model trains was only surpassed by the love for his family. Ron had many titles in life, but his favorite was being a husband, a father, and especially a grandfather.

On December 14, 1969, he married Alicia Baker, in Sterling. They shared over 51 years of marriage.

Ron is survived by:&nbsp; wife, Alicia Proffitt of Lyons; children, Dawn (Zane) Zahradnik of Windom, and Wesley (Erin Cartwright-Harrison) Proffitt of Austin, TX; grandsons, Zander and Xavyer Zahradnik; and brother, Mike (Marion) Proffitt of California.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Roger Proffitt.

Cremation has taken place and a private memorial service will be held.&nbsp; Military honors will be conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, April 19, 2021, at the Sterling Community Cemetery Chapel, 522 E. Cleveland, Sterling.

Jo Ellen Cooper, 69, of McPherson, KS, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She worked as a middle school special education teacher for 11 years.

Jo Ellen was born on Sept. 28, 1951, in Los Angeles, CA, the daughter of Marvin Edison and Joan Lillian (Johnson) Cooper. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Emporia State University.

She was a former member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and loved to travel in her spare time.

She is survived by a son, Clinton Rife, II (Skylar) of Bogue, KS; a brother, Jerry Cooper of Emporia, KS; and a granddaughter, Paisley Jo-Anna Rife, who was named after her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Eugene Cooper.

There will be no service held at this time.

She worked as a middle school special education teacher for 11 years.Jo Ellen was born on Sept. 28, 1951, in Los Angeles, CA, the daughter of Marvin Edison and Joan Lillian (Johnson) Cooper. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Emporia State University.She was a former member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and loved to travel in her spare time.She is survived by a son, Clinton Rife, II (Skylar) of Bogue, KS; a brother, Jerry Cooper of Emporia, KS; and a granddaughter, Paisley Jo-Anna Rife, who was named after her.She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Eugene Cooper.There will be no service held at this time.Memorial donations may be payable to Clinton Rife (to be designated at a later date) and mailed to 3271 J. Roger Gene Fuller, was born on June 1, 1938, to Walter and Lillie Fuller at Franklin, NE., and passed away at the age of 82 on April 5, 2021, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, KS. 

In his youth and teen years, he grew up helping his parents with the farming in Smith County. Roger was a 1957 graduate of Smith Center High School and joined the Army National Guard after graduation. He married Glennia Graham on Sept. 6, 1959. To this union, five children were born, Susan Sellers, Phoenix, AZ., Sheila Heartfield, Salina, KS., Mickie Floyd, Turon, KS., Roger Fuller, Jr. (deceased) and Rick Fuller, Hutchinson, KS. 

Roger worked many years for Bogaarts Bread Plant in Smith Center. In his later years he moved to Hutchinson where he was employed at Jackson Ice Cream until his retirement. His hobbies after retirement was putting puzzles together which he thoroughly enjoyed. No matter how tough times were, he always had a smile and loved to joke. He will be greatly missed as a husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. 

Roger is survived by his wife, Glennia; three daughters, Susan, Sheila and Mickie; one son, Rick; two sisters, Darlene Peters, Hutchinson, KS., and Marylin Gibson, Wentzville, MO., 15 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son and three grandchildren. 

His wish was to be cremated. Memorial service will be 2 p.m., Friday, May 28, 2021 at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave. Hutchinson. Burial will take place at a later date at Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center, KS. Hutchinson Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Ernest “Ernie” Anthony DiNella, 77, of McPherson, KS and formerly of California, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 13, 2020, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was retired from the U.S. Marine Corps and serving from 1961 to 1981, including two tours of duty in Vietnam. He also retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

Ernest was born on Sept. 1, 1942, in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Vincenzo and Mary Rita (Morone) DiNella. He attended Bishop Neumann High School in Philadelphia and later earned his Associate of Arts degree from the Inter-American University in Puerto Rico. Ernie was united in marriage to Linda Jean Unger on February 6, 1965, in Elkton, MD. She preceded him in death on June 17, 1990.

He attended St. Joseph Catholic Church, McPherson.

Survivors include: three daughters, Andrea Ferguson (John) of McPherson, KS, Christina Fazio of San Clemente, CA, and Linda Jean Hall (Jerry) of San Juan Capistrano, CA; two brothers, Bruno DiNella (Karen) of Rosemount, MN and Frank DiNella (Betty) of Spring Hill, FL; five grandchildren, Briana Dooley (Bret), Ian Ferguson, Maresa Fazio, Kieli Hall, and Codi Hall; and many extended family and friends.

A Funeral Rite will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 23, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, McPherson. The Rosary will begin at 10:00 AM.&nbsp;&nbsp;Inurnment, with military honors, will be in McPherson Cemetery. Ernest “Ernie” Anthony DiNella | 1942 - 2021 |

Though she didn’t set out to teach us anything, Rose Munoz taught us a lot. She taught us to be generous and share what we have, even if it may appear that we don’t have much to give. Her approach to life showed how we can make the most of our circumstances, even if they aren’t what we would hope for. Her example reminds us that complaining about things we can’t change is a waste of time and energy. 

Rose died on Friday, April 9, after a decades-long battle with many serious health problems. Despite her poor health, Rose will be remembered most as a tough fighter against her illness and for her generous, cheerful manner and playful disposition. She loved to take care of people, and was known to use her non-dialysis days to cook meals for her family and friends. She loved having her brothers and sisters from her congregation drop in on Saturday mornings to take their coffee break in her living room. She would have plenty of cake, cookies and coffee for as many as wanted to drop in for a few minutes to say “Hi”. 

Rose was born in Liberal, Kansas on May 1, 1949 to parents Raymond and Mary Chaffin. Rose was the sixth of nine children. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Jim and Gene and sisters Freda and Lilian. She is survived by siblings Ellen, Burt, Joe and Betty, along with numerous nieces and nephews, and countless spiritual brothers and sisters. Although Rose never had children of her own, she was a loving mother to her nieces Susana and Alyja Almaraz and Marielena Tamayo. 

On January 4, 2006, Rose married Antonio (Tony) Munoz, who survives. Those who know them well, know that Rose chose a good man. Tony has been devoted to caring for Rose for many years. Despite many challenges and difficulties, they enjoyed 15 years of married life. 

As a young woman, Rose began to learn many exciting and important truths that the Bible teaches. She learned that God’s personal name is Jehovah and that he invites each of us to be his friend. Rose wanted to be Jehovah’s friend. On July 1, 1982 she was baptized as a servant of Jehovah. 

The Bible’s promise that the earth will be turned back in to a paradise, with no more sickness or death, was an important part of Rose’s faith. (Revelation 21:4) She loved everything about the earth. She loved to sit in her house and watch the birds and squirrels play in her yard. (Isaiah 11:6-9) The Bible’s teaching that Jehovah will resurrect his faithful servants gave strength, comfort and hope to Rose. She went to sleep in death with absolute confidence that she will be awakened from death to enjoy life on earth as a young, healthy servant of Jehovah. (Isaiah 35:5, 6) Rose is waiting for her God to call her back to life. (Job 14:15)

Tommy Allan ‘Tom’ Reed, 83, of Hutchinson, died April 13, 2021, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born June 16, 1937, in Hutchinson, to Ray and Vara (Gagnebin) Reed.

Tom attended Hutchinson High School and Hutchinson Community College. He served in the United States Navy from 1954 to 1958. Tom worked at Winchester Packing Company for 22 years before becoming a truck driver for Dillons, a job he held for 10 years before retiring. Following that, he went to work for the City of Hutchinson on their summer crew. Tom was a member of Teamsters Local 795. His biggest joy in life came from spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

On Aug. 3, 1963, Tom married Judith ‘Judy’ Hale at Haven United Methodist Church. They shared 58 years of marriage. She survives.

Also surviving are: children, Jay Reed (Chere) and Lisa Valentine (Ron) all of Hutchinson; grandchildren, Jeff Valentine of Haven, Katy Fawcett (Austin) of Wichita, Emily, Jon, and Jake Reed, all of Hutchinson, sisters, Patsy Moylan (Al) of Snohomish, WA, Linda Humphrey (Frank) of Abbyville; sister-in-law, Bernice Reed of South Hutchinson, brother-in-law, Ron Hale (Joneen) of Kansas City, MO; and numerous extended family members.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Joe Reed; sisters, Shirley Schoonover, Glenna Arneson, and Deanna Hammer.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2021, at Elliott Chapel. Burial will follow in Laurel Cemetery, Haven, with military honors conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family present to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Jean was born on Sept. 20, 1931, in Rockwall, TX, the daughter of Charlie Oscar and Pearl Lena (Mooney) Howell. She graduated from Central Academy and Central College.&nbsp;&nbsp;On May 2, 1967, Jean was united in marriage to Laurence “Larry” A. Clark in McPherson, KS. He preceded her in death on June 30, 2009.

She was a member of the McPherson Free Methodist Church, Red Hat Society, Pylettes, and TOPS. Club.

Survivors include: her daughter, Pam Clark (Tracy Schmidt) of McPherson, KS; granddaughter, Chaz Clark (Lance Bean) of McPherson, KS; great-granddaughter, Collier Bean of McPherson, KS; step-daughter, Sandy Clark of McPherson, KS; a brother, Charles Howell (Rachel) of Mansfield, TX; a sister, Margie Peoples (Dosville) of Rockwall, TX; and several nieces &amp; nephews.

James “Jim” B. Batson, 87, of McPherson, KS, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 12, 2021, surrounded by family at McPherson Hospital. He worked for over 35 years at Kansas Power &amp; Light where he was a welding supervisor.&nbsp;

Jim was born on June 21, 1933, in Wellington, KS, the son of William Lee and Erma Fae (Turpin) Batson. He graduated from McPherson High School and attended McPherson College. On July 5, 1952, Jim was united in&nbsp;&nbsp;marriage to Lucille W. Flory in McPherson.&nbsp;

He was a member of the McPherson Church of the Brethren. He was an avid golfer and was the first member of Turkey Creek Golf Course. He enjoyed racing go-carts, water skiing, and boating.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lucille of the home; three children, Cindy Kaufman (Cameron) of Buhler, KS, Janet Barthman (Mike) of Abilene, KS, and Bruce Batson of Wichita, KS; a brother, Jerry Batson of McPherson, KS; special friends, Harold and Penny Selzer of McPherson, KS; twelve grandchildren, Chris Cheesman (Mandy), Joseph Kaufman (Blanca), Katie Heller (Joe), Ian Tinsley (Bridgette), Brook Batson, Nick Batson, Stefanie Osborne (Dave), Jeremy Batson (Ashley), Eric Batson, Kelly Batson, Erica Selzer, and Patrick Selzer (Katie); and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by&nbsp;&nbsp;his parents, two brothers, William Batson and Donald Batson; and a son, Wayne Batson.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday, April 15, 2021, at Stockham Family Funeral Home. The family asks that attendees wear masks. The final resting place will be at Washington Creek Cemetery in Lawrence, KS.

James “Jim” B. Batson | 1933 - 2021 |

Rev. Gene Allen McBride of Hesston, Kansas, passed away Monday, April 12, 2021 at Schowalter Villa, at the age of 91 years. He was born December 1, 1929, in Friend, Nebraska, the son of Fred and Grace (Schmidt) McBride.

He attended grade schools in York and Nance Counties in Nebraska and graduated from Fullerton High School with the class of 1947. He often spoke of his acceptance of Christ as his Savior at a revival meeting in the fall of 1943 in the Methodist Church in Fullerton.

He was united in marriage to Areta Longenecker on April 8, 1949.

For several years, he farmed with his father in Nebraska and his father-in-law in Minnesota, where he felt God called him to mission work. On January 3, 1953, after graduating from Bethany School of Missions in Bloomington, Minnesota, Gene, Areta, and their three year old daughter, Jeanette, set sail for Portuguese Guinea (now Guinea-Bissau) in West Africa.&nbsp; Here, Gene was baptized early in his ministry. They served in church planting under the Worldwide Evangelization for Christ (WEC) Mission until 1988, when they returned to the States because of Areta’s failing health. Gene then became the executive director of the Missionary Retreat Fellowship, a complex of homes for missionaries on furlough near Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania.

Following Areta’s death in 1994, Gene married Elizabeth (Fast) Jantzen in 1996 in Mountain Lake, Minnesota, who also joined him in the work at MRF. In 2001, they retired from this work and moved to Hesston, Kansas.

He and Liz became members of the Garden Community Church, where he served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher and an elder. Throughout life, Gene continued his interest in, and love and support for mission work and missionaries. In his retirement years, he also volunteered weekly at the Source of Light Mission in Newton, Kansas.&nbsp;

In retirement, Gene was employed part-time by Preferred Builders for several years. He loved to travel, read, hunt and fish.

On March 18, 2019 he became a resident in nursing care at Schowalter Villa in Hesston.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; daughter, Jeanette (Gary) Stangland; step-daughters, Ellen (Matt) Miles and Martha Bragg; grandsons, Eric (Devon) Stangland and Jason (Joli) Stangland; great-grandson, Calvin Stangland; step-grandchildren, Jazzmin Bragg, Regal Bragg, Georgia Johnson, Micayla (Joel) Shrimpton, Macy Miles, and Mattie Miles; step-great-grandchildren, Mar’Gianna and Imani Wade; and siblings, Norma Longenecker, Valerie Ross, Wayne (Joyce) McBride, Dwayne (Sharon) McBride, and LaVonne (Chuck) Abela.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Areta; sister, Twyla McNeff; and brother, Galen McBride.

Cremation is planned with memorial services to be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 17, 2021 at Garden Community Church, rural Moundridge. The family will greet friends one hour prior to service time. The services will be live-streamed at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.facebook.com/gardencommunitychurch">www.facebook.com/gardencommunitychurch</a>. Burial will be held at Dunmore Cemetery, Dunmore, Pennsylvania at a later date. Sue Ann Franko, 76, of Hutchinson, died April 11, 2021, at Hospice House. She was born November 13, 1944, in Hutchinson, to Sam and Marian Williams.

Marian died when Sue was five years old and Violet Morgan cared for her and legally adopted her after Sam’s death.

Sue graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1962 and Emporia State Teacher’s College in 1966. She taught physical education at Sherman Middle School for 6 years until her daughters were born. Sue then did substitute teaching and volunteered at the Cosmosphere. She then ran Dr. Goddard’s Lab at the Cosmosphere for many years. Sue directed the Red Cross swimming program in Hutchinson for many years. She also worked at the Kansas State Fair, first in concessions and then as director of the Professional Art Building. Sue enjoyed wheat-weaving and traveling to craft shows with her family.

On June 16, 1967, she married James R. ‘Jim’ Franko in Hutchinson. He survives.

Also surviving are: daughters, Jennifer Viel (Tom) of Winnebago, IL, and Kristine Franko of Edgerton, WI.; grandchildren, Amber and Hunter Egelhoff of Jerseyville, IL, Luke and Anna Viel of Winnebago, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, and a half-sister.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, April 15, 2021, at Elliott Mortuary. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with family present from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary. The casket will remain closed.
