RENO COUNTY — Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire at a rural home in Reno County.

Just before 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, crews responded to a fire in the 1600 block of North Wilson Road, according to a media release from Jeremy Unruh, division chief of operations with the Hutchinson Fire Department.

First-arriving crews found a single-story home with heavy fire involvement. A detached garage and a 28-foot camper were also fully engulfed. Firefighters began a defensive attack, and rural water supply operations were initiated with help from mutual aid water tenders.

Crews were eventually able to knock down most of the fire and enter the home. No one was home at the time. The garage and camper were a total loss, and the fire damaged approximately 70% of the house. Wind was a significant factor in the fire’s behavior. No injuries were reported.

Adopt a Furry Friend: Bird

RENO COUNTY, Kan. — One person was injured in a two-vehicle crash just after 6 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2005 Dodge Dakota driven by Noah Jeffrey Edwards, 26, of Republic, Missouri, was westbound on Kansas 96 about one mile east of Yoder Road when it rear-ended a 2014 Honda Accord driven by Zandre DeBeer Wiggins, 29, of Hutchinson. Both vehicles traveled into the north ditch after the impact.

A passenger in the Dodge, Sara Elizabeth Muzzy, 35, of Hutchinson, was taken by EMS to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

Neither driver was injured. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The grant through FHLBank Topeka’s Affordable Housing Program (AHP), which is made in partnership with FHLBank Topeka’s member financial institutions, will make improvements to 20 homes in Sterling and Alden, Kansas. The funds will improve the livability of qualifying owner-occupied homes in the two communities. Qualified applicants must be at or below the set household income limit as specified in the full application.

“Providing these grants through our members each year is a cornerstone of our mission," said Jeff Kuzbel, President and CEO of FHLBank. "The commitment of FHLBank members and the innovative spirit of community builders across our district are showcased by the diverse projects receiving funding.” He continued, “This year’s AHP projects will profoundly impact many lives."

Each year, FHLBank Topeka allocates 10% of its prior year’s earnings to AHP. Nonprofit groups, for-profit developers, government agencies and public entities apply for the grants for rental and owner-occupied housing projects through an FHLBank member like First Bank.

“We could not have done this without our community partners. The cities of Alden and Sterling, Interfaith Housing, and Clelia McCrory have played an integral part in moving this grant forward and improving housing options,” said Jeﬀ Laudermilk, President of First Bank.

Interfaith Housing seeks to alleviate poverty and build community through housing assistance, financial education and individual empowerment. They do this by providing people with the knowledge and tools to achieve financial self-sufficiency and access to housing that is affordable to their level of income, their level of need and where they can live in safety with dignity.

Reno County Commission to discuss solar regulations, among other items Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 57th annual Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale is set for Friday and Saturday at the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

The event raises money for the Mennonite Central Committee, a Christian relief and development organization founded in 1920 that supports communities in need across North America and around the world.

“The last couple of years we’ve been able to top $600,000,” said Jim Robb, board chair. “A few years ago, because of some of the donations we had at that point, we were able to donate over $700,000 to Mennonite Central Committee.”

Funds raised go toward MCC-supported missions in 45 countries, including the United States and Canada.

A major draw of the event is the food, with more than 35,000 New Year’s cookies and 17,000 verenike made by nearly 1,000 volunteers.

Robb said estimating attendance has become difficult, though there was once a method.

“Years ago, when the cars came in, there would be people who had a clicker and they would count the cars,” he said. “Then they would multiply by three, and that was how they determined the attendance. We don’t do that anymore, so it’s really hard to tell.”

The two-day event features live music, children’s activities, and five auctions.

“One of those is the general auction, which also has an online component,” Robb said. “That starts at 8:45 a.m. Saturday. We also have a preview auction Friday night at 6 p.m. that lasts about an hour.”

More than 200 quilts will be sold during the quilt auction, which also begins at 8:45 a.m. Saturday. A children’s auction will be held in the Pride of Kansas Building, alongside kid-friendly activities.

“We hope that the children will gain an understanding of auctions and learn that the money helps someone else,” Robb said.

The sale is organized by a 24-member board representing communities and churches across the state.

“They come from a wide range of areas,” Robb said. “We’ve had members from as far south as Harper County, and from places like Topeka, Reno, Harvey, McPherson and Saline counties. Some represent churches, others represent communities — it’s a diverse group.”

Robb is not sure how many attendees they will have, but shared a story of how they used to figure the attendance.

"It's really hard for us to tell, years ago when the cars came in, there would be people who would have a clicker and they would click the cars and keep track of the cars," Robb said. "Then they would multiply by three and that was the way they determined the attendance. We don't do that any more, so it's really hard to tell."

The two-day event is full of live music, auctions, and food.

"All total, we have five different auctions," Robb said. "One of those is the general auction, which we do have an online component for that. MANHATTAN, Kan. — The deadline is approaching to apply for the 2025 session of the American Legion Boys State of Kansas, scheduled for June 1–7 at Kansas State University in Manhattan. Applications are due by Wednesday, April 30, though late submissions may be considered if space allows.

This year marks the 87th session of Kansas Boys State and the 33rd consecutive year the program will be held at K-State.

Traditionally open to high school juniors, the program has again expanded eligibility to include current sophomores. There is no cap on how many students a school, community or American Legion post may sponsor.

Boys State is a weeklong immersive experience that teaches leadership, teamwork and civic responsibility through a simulated government. Delegates form political parties, run for office, and manage local and state government functions in a hands-on learning environment. The program aims to develop personal responsibility and foster respect for the democratic process and those who serve in the military to protect it.

The program costs $375, but most participants receive sponsorships covering a majority of the expense. Families are typically asked to contribute $50. Applications can be submitted online at <a href="https://ksbstate.org">ksbstate.org</a>.

Participants may earn three hours of college credit in Introduction to Political Science (POLSC 110) through K-State and can also pursue Eagle Scout merit badges. Attendees are also eligible for the Samsung American Legion Scholarship. The Kansas finalist will receive at least $1,250 and may be considered for a national award of up to $10,000.

Mike Finnegan, Ph.D., assistant professor and director of the Strengths initiative at Kansas State, will deliver the keynote address during the opening session at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 1, in McCain Auditorium. Finnegan, a 1998 Boys State alum, leads efforts to help students grow their unique talents and enhance well-being across the K-State campus.

Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab, also a 1998 alumnus, will offer remarks and administer the oath of office to the newly elected mayors during a ceremony at 6:50 p.m. Monday, June 2, at the Boys State Assembly Area outside Goodnow and Marlatt halls.

The Hutchinson Reno County Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a civics bee for students in grades 6 through 8. &nbsp;The finals for the bee are on Wednesday April 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Stringer Fine Arts Center on the HutchCC campus. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The preliminaries for the bee actually began earlier this school year as the application process began on October 15, 2024, and closed on February 4, 2025. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The chamber’s Lauren Storm says that students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades across the country are invited to enter the competition by writing an essay that answers three different prompts. &nbsp;They are:&nbsp; • &nbsp;Identifying a specific problem, challenge or opportunity in your community. &nbsp; • &nbsp;What individuals or organizations would you work with to accomplish your solution. &nbsp; • &nbsp;How does your solution include founding principles and civic virtues &nbsp;

The essays should be around 750 words. &nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;From these essays, 20 finalists are chosen by local judges that use an online platform to judge these essays on certain criteria, on content, but not necessarily composition. &nbsp;

Then at the live Civics Bee the 20 finalists will answer questions from two rounds of multiple-choice questions on civics. &nbsp;&nbsp;

From there, six students will be selected to&nbsp;answer questions from judges on their essays. &nbsp; Following the questioning, three students will be selected as the finalists. &nbsp;The third-place finalist receives $150, the second-place finalist $250 and the first-place winner gets $500. As an added benefit this year IdeaTek is providing the final three competitors with a tablet.  &nbsp;

All three of the finalists have the opportunity to move onto the state competition which is held in May. &nbsp;

Let's be honest. Mr. T isn't perfect. He can be a little hard to get to know, doesn't like men with beards and he spins in his kennel. 

But once he stops growling at you and begins to build a relationship, he is close to perfect. He is actually very loving and gives the best hugs in the whole world. 

You'll have to make a little bit of effort with him, but it will be worth it. He is somewhat picky about his other doggy friends, but he has found several playmates at the shelter and loves to wrestle and tumble, especially with his BFF Indy. 

Outside in the exercise yard, on a walk or in the office, he doesn't spin. It's a boredom thing. If you have any concerns about Mr. T getting along with your dog, we are always happy to do a Meet &amp; Greet to make sure they are compatible.

 Mr. T has spent too much time in our shelter and needs to find a home.

There are a few economists that thinks the U.S. is already in a trade war.&nbsp; But the United States had a record high trade deficit last year because of all of the imports into our country.&nbsp; 

The President is trying to balance trade, but these same economists think the president’s strategy of using tariffs won't do any good.&nbsp; 

However, one economist wasn’t quite as certain, saying that for it to be beneficial, tariffs depend on being short-lived and resulting in trade initiatives with market access or purchase commitments. 

Some of the tariffs proposed by President Trump went into effect last week.

Governor Laura Kelly announced in a press release on Friday that she has signed off on seven additional bills this week that will become new laws. These include the following:

• Substitute for Senate Bill 67 – authorizes certified registered nurse anesthetists to prescribe, procure and administer drugs consistent with registered nurse anesthetist’s education and qualifications.

•Senate Bill 89 – authorizes the Kansas Department of Agriculture to assess a participant fee for poultry producers that wish to voluntarily participate in the National Poultry Improvement Plan, a state-federal cooperative testing and certification program that seeks to eradicate disease in the poultry industry.

• Senate Bill 97 – requires vehicle dealers to apply for a dealer inventory-only title for certain used non-highway vehicles that a vehicle dealer obtains.

• Substitute for House Bill 2152 – shifts Kansas’ investment strategy for public funds to encourage those funds be deposited in Kansas financial institutions. This change will help ensure taxpayer dollars are invested in local communities, increase economic activity in the state and give Kansans access to additional capital to finance investments in their homes, businesses or communities, according to the Office of the Governor.

• House Bill 2359 – enacts the Uniform Adult Guardianship and Protective Proceedings Jurisdiction Act and the Uniform Guardianship, Conservatorship and other Protective Arrangements Act.

• House Bill 2338 – authorizes the Kansas Board of Cosmetology to issue temporary location and temporary guest artist permits and establishes criteria therefor.

• House Bill 2307 – transfers the prenatal and postnatal diagnosed conditions awareness programs from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to the Kansas Council on Developmental Disabilities.

“By allowing health care providers to practice the full extent of their qualifications and capabilities, we are expanding opportunities for both providers and patients,” Kelly said when talking about Senate Bill 67. “This legislation will help address our health care workforce shortage and increase access to care.”&nbsp;

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has confirmed that they are involved in an investigation of a McPherson County Sheriff’s Office deputy.&nbsp;

According to a release by the McPherson County Sheriff’s Office the deputy is on administrative leave pending the conclusion of the investigation. They are referring all inquiries into the investigation to the KBI. &nbsp;

Because this is a personnel matter, no information will be released according to the sheriff’s office.&nbsp;

A Wichita man is in custody after a robbery Sunday morning at Newton Walgreens. 

Newton Police were dispatched to Walgreens, 1300 N. Main, at about 11:15 a.m. on a report of an armed robbery. The suspect reportedly indicated he had a firearm, obtained cash from the store and fled south. 

 Responding officers located a man acting suspiciously several blocks away and found clothing and other evidence from the robbery in an alley nearby. 

The man, Joshua Ewing, 37, was arrested and booked into the Harvey County Detention Center. Ewing had been released from the Detention Center earlier the same day. 

No weapon was found. The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office and North Newton Police assisted in the response. The investigation is ongoing.&nbsp;&nbsp;

BARTON COUNTY —Two teens were injured in an accident just before 7p.m. Sunday in Barton County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1994 Ford F150 driven by Benjamin Ryan&nbsp;Pflughoeft, 16, Claflin, was westbound on Kansas 4 seven miles east of Hoisington. The pickup crossed the center line, traveled into the eastbound lanes and crossed over into the south ditch. The vehicle continued southwest in the ditch, vaulted the embankment and struck the railroad bridge.

EMS transported&nbsp;Pflughoeft and a passenger Brody Carl&nbsp;Pflughoeft, 13,&nbsp; Claflin to Clara Barton Hospital. They were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Two Kansas teens hospitalized after violent crash

We hope to find more answers about bird flu that is damaging the poultry and dairy industry.&nbsp; 

That's because researchers from the University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine got a grant from USDA to work on avian influenza projects.&nbsp; 

They're focus will be on trying to find out how it's transmitted, and hopefully slow the effects&nbsp;of the disease on dairy herds.&nbsp; 

There have been 68 confirmed cases in humans with one death from the disease.

Ag Minute: Avian flu impacts on agricultural industry

Is this the year for a bin-busting wheat crop? Kansas wheat producers are encouraged to scout their best fields for entries in the 2025 National Wheat Yield Contest. Now in its 10th year, the National Wheat Foundation’s contest offers producers a chance to win prizes and learn from other producers across the country how to maximize their management to improve yields and quality.&nbsp;

“The goal of the National Wheat Yield Contest is to recognize the best management practices that help growers achieve high yield and high quality harvests,” said Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat Vice President of Research and Operations. “With the addition of the pilot digital yield category, Kansas wheat producers have another way to demonstrate their ability to adopt and utilize cutting-edge technology, showcasing how innovation can drive both yield and quality advancements in our industry.”&nbsp;

The contest includes four main categories: dryland winter wheat, irrigated winter wheat, dryland spring wheat and irrigated spring wheat. Contest fields must be at least five continuous acres, planted with professionally produced, certified, branded, newly purchased wheat seed. All contestants must retain a 10-pound bag of grain for shipment and quality testing. If an entry places nationally, that sample will be milled, baked and evaluated by a panel of industry experts.&nbsp;

The top three yield entries in each category by state will be recognized. National winners will be recognized and awarded with a cash award, along with travel and registration expenses to attend the 2026 Commodity Classic in February in San Antonio, Texas. Top industry-desired quality will be recognized with an additional cash reward.&nbsp;

A new highlight for 2025 is the expansion of a Digital Yield plot category, which is open to Kansas producers who raise dryland winter wheat. Producers can enter the category using digital technologies such as John Deere Operations Center, Climate FieldView or Bushel, alongside calibrated grain cart scale data, to submit yields from a designated 20-acre area. Producers can enter up to three fields in this category.&nbsp;

“We are so pleased with the growth of the contest and look forward to continuing to share the lessons learned as farmers work to produce high-yielding, high-quality wheat,” said Anne Osborne, NWF yield contest director, in an&nbsp;<a href="https://kswheat.com/blank">article</a>&nbsp;for DTN/Progressive Farmer. “U.S. wheat plays a critical role in the world food supply, and the benefits of having the crop in the rotation cannot be overstated as farmers look to improve their productivity and profitability.”

Growers must submit entries by May 15, 2025, for winter wheat categories and August 1, 2025, for spring wheat categories. Harvest data is due by October 1, 2025. Entries must be completed online at wheatcontest.org. Each entry costs $100, but sponsoring partners have entry fee vouchers available.&nbsp;

 HUTCHINSON — Two leaders of aerospace and innovations in education, the Cosmosphere and Kansas State University Salina, are announcing a historic strategic partnership that will elevate aerospace education and research for Kansas youth and beyond.

 The partnership between the Cosmosphere and K-State Salina will feature the exploration, development and implementation of innovative solutions, research and education initiatives to foster advancements in aerospace education.

 This collaboration will elevate K-12 education and outreach for Kansas and the country. The two organizations will develop programs, workshops and public outreach initiatives focused on aerospace and STEM education. 

This will include new summer camps and collaborative youth outreach programs; implementation of virtual reality, or VR, and augmented reality, or AR, experiences; and the development of new curriculums offered through both organizations.

 “As a leading center for informal STEAM education, the Cosmosphere is excited to partner with K-State Salina,” said Jim Remar, Cosmosphere CEO. “This partnership will create new opportunities to inspire students in the state and region about fields in aerospace. This partnership will help provide students with actionable paths to achieve their newly sparked dreams.”

 As a part of the collaboration, the Cosmosphere will enhance K-State Salina’s knowledge of K-12 instruction and provide training relevant education practices, provide guidance and support to the campus in the development of K-12 camps and outreach programs, facilitate networking opportunities and partnerships with K-12 partners, advise and collaborate on marketing opportunities to further the campus’s long-term vision as a one of a kind destination campus.

Cosmosphere, K-State Salina announce STEM partnership 

The Hutchinson Fire Department (HFD) battled a garage fire in east Hutchinson on Friday afternoon.&nbsp;

According to a release from HFD they were called to 1500 block of east Fourth Avenue for a structure fire.&nbsp; Initial units on the scene found a detached garage that was heavily involved with fire.&nbsp;

Units made a quick aggressive attack on the structure and extinguished the fire.&nbsp; No injuries were reported.&nbsp;
