HUTCHINSON, Kan. — City Manager Enrico Villegas has been recognized nationally as one of the “Top 10 City Managers for 2025” by Government Business Review.

The honor follows nominations from readers and a detailed evaluation by the magazine’s editorial team, which sought out leaders making significant contributions to government leadership, public administration, and community development.

While the award highlights Villegas’ leadership, he emphasized that the recognition reflects the work of the entire City of Hutchinson team.

“This is a shared achievement,” Villegas said. “I appreciate the council’s tireless support for me and our shared vision for Hutchinson. Their trust and commitment make it possible for us to move forward together as one team.”

HUTCHINSON — A Hutchinson nonprofit is taking a big step forward in its mission to guide at-risk youth toward brighter futures, thanks to a major state grant.

Wisdom In Motion has received more than 140-thousand dollars from the Kansas Department of Corrections through the FY2026 Non-Matching Juvenile Crime Community Prevention Grant.

Program Manager Heather Jobe says the organization works with youth ages 10 to 17 who are either underserved or at risk of entering — or re-entering — the criminal justice system. Each participant is paired with a trained, trauma-informed mentor who helps them set personal goals and connect with programs that fit their needs.

One of those programs is launching this fall — the Career Readiness and Youth Entrepreneurship initiative. Over 12 months, fifteen teens will gain job skills, leadership training, and learn how to turn ideas into action. Those who complete the program will receive a 35-hundred-dollar stipend for vocational training.

Financial Director Esmeralda Tovar-Mora says it’s not just about finding a job — it’s about building opportunities for themselves and making an impact in their communities.

The grant will also help fund mentor training, staff salaries, workshops, and internships. In addition, Wisdom In Motion partners with the NAACP Youth to run the Urban Farming Initiative, where kids learn responsibility through growing crops and caring for animals.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Art Center will host a three-day Foundation Oil Painting Workshop on Sept. 26-28, offering beginners the chance to learn essential skills from Wichita artist and teacher Yulla Vega.

The workshop will run from 1 to 4 p.m. each day. Tuition is $85 for non-members and $75 for Art Center members.

Participants will learn to safely work with solvents, paints and supplies while practicing core techniques in color mixing, brushwork and layering. The class will feature step-by-step instruction, live tutorials and individualized guidance to help attendees create their own paintings and develop a solid foundation in oil painting.

Vega is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores themes of home and place, often inspired by personal experiences with transitional homelessness, selective mutism and systemic disruption. Their art, which spans painting and installation, aims to honor survival and the reassembly of self.

With more than two decades of artistic practice, Vega combines studio work with public engagement and holds a project management certification to expand art’s role as a tool for community dialogue and healing. They have studied fine arts at Cowley College and the Kansas City Art Institute and are a member of Artist Inc. Vega currently works as an artist, project manager and teacher at Mark Arts in Wichita.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson High School senior Kale Dreiling placed fifth in the nation in the Job Interview category at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in June in Atlanta.

Dreiling earned his spot at nationals by winning first place in April at the Kansas SkillsUSA competition. The Job Interview contest included about 50 qualifiers, with Dreiling advancing to the top 12 finalists before placing fifth overall.

“They only medal the top three,” said Glenna Burden, who has coached the leadership competitions at Hutchinson High for the past two years. “He had an exceptional overall score … but we just barely missed it.”

Jeremiah Harmon, SkillsUSA lead advisor and Dreiling’s welding instructor, said he encouraged Dreiling to compete. “This really is a big deal when you consider our role in CTE is to become college and career ready,” Harmon said. “Placing 5th in the country for preparing students in Job Interview; which includes job searching, writing resumes, asking and securing letters of recommendation, cover letters, filling out applications, meeting with receptionists, conducting an interview, and even the handshake. The student is scored in every aspect of the event and I am very proud to brag on both Kale and Glenna; Kale earned 898.75 of 1000 points.”

Burden explained that the contest is judged from the moment competitors begin the process. “Everything is graded from the eye contact, the handshake, how he sits before he’s taken back to the interview panel,” she said. “He’s got a gift of gab … it’s what he can do in that room that put him ahead.”

Burden called the competition “absolute life skills,” adding, “Not everyone is going to college like they used to. I think that we need to reinvigorate our pursuit of the trades, and this is just one more way to get visibility to our pursuit.”

Also attending nationals from Hutchinson High were Eli Perez, Enrique Flores and Felisa O’Neal.

Hutch High’s Dreiling places 5th in nation at SkillsUSA job interview contest

A Kansas state representative is calling on Gov. Laura Kelly to address allegations of misconduct involving his predecessor, now serving on the Kansas State Fair Board.

Rep. Kyler Sweely, R-Hutchinson, said in a letter to Kelly on Monday that Jason Probst, acted “highly inappropriately” toward him during the Boots and Bling fundraiser for the Kansas Fairgrounds Foundation on Saturday. Sweely defeated Probst in the 2024 election for the 102nd District seat. Kelly appointed Probst to the Fair Board on July 7.

“Mr. Probst, visibly intoxicated, made disturbing sexual and homophobic comments toward me in front of attendees, and had to be physically held back due to escalating, aggressive behavior,” Sweely wrote in a statement to Hutch Post on Tuesday.

When asked, Jason Probst replied to the accusations saying in a statement, "Kyler Sweely is doing all he can to deflect from his history of abuse and dishonesty. If his feelings get hurt so easily perhaps public service isn’t for him."&nbsp;

In the letter to Gov. Kelly, Sweely said the encounter was not an isolated incident, claiming it was the second time in the past month that Probst had directed a “rant filled with homophobic comments” at him. He urged the governor to “immediately review this matter and take appropriate action” regarding Probst’s continued role on the board.

Kelly’s office confirmed receipt of Sweely’s letter.

MEADE COUNTY—A Kansas man died in an accident just after 8:30p.m. Tuesday in Meade County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Polaris ATV driven by&nbsp; Timothy Neal&nbsp; Beckerman, 63, Inman, was eastbound on a private property field road in the 22000 Block of B Road in Fowler. The driver accelerated, the ATV struck a tree and he was thrown off the vehicle on impact.

Beckerman was pronounced dead at the scene and transported Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary.

McPherson Co. man dies after ATV strikes a tree

What began as a volunteer effort to clean up a forgotten rural cemetery during the COVID-19 pandemic has grown into a countywide mission to restore and preserve burial sites — and ensure that veterans are properly honored.

Jessica Frost, Reno County’s volunteer preservationist, spends her time updating cemetery records, restoring damaged or unreadable headstones, and assisting families in locating loved ones’ graves. She receives no pay from the city, county, or cemeteries for her work.

“I literally just say, ‘Hey, what do you need?’ and I’ll help you out as much as I can,” Frost said.

Her work recently brought her to Fairlawn Cemetery, where she uncovered significant maintenance issues — including overgrown plots, buried headstones, and damaged markers. While updating Fairlawn’s master list, Frost discovered a deeper concern: more than 40 veterans buried there have no memorial markers.

“It’s not unusual to see one or two without stones in a cemetery,” Frost said. “But over 40? That’s a problem.”

&nbsp;She is now working with state and federal VA offices to verify veteran statuses, contact next of kin, and order headstones through the VA’s system in WaKeeney.

Her advocacy has also led to the creation of Operation Final Salute, a foundation launched earlier this year to address unmarked veterans’ graves. One case involves Ella Meese, the first Black woman in U.S. military history to receive full military honors at her funeral. Despite paperwork being filed at the time of her death, Meese still does not have a headstone.

Beyond Fairlawn, Frost is working with multiple cemeteries across Reno County, and she will take her mission to upcoming events, including veteran expos in Garden City on Friday, Wichita on Aug. 23, and Topeka in September for Gold Star ceremonies.

Frost says her work highlights a growing problem statewide.

“We’ve come to an era where empathy is no longer,” she said. “We don’t value cemeteries and the death of our loved ones as much as we used to — especially when it comes to honoring veterans. The least we can do is be there when they die and make sure the places they are laid to rest are cared for.”

Meadowlark would cover construction costs and provide financial security for removal of facilities if the project is abandoned.

The board will also consider appointments to the South Central Kansas Economic Development District (SCKEDD). County Commission Vice-Chairman Ron Hirst has recommended Michelle Inskeep of Peoples Bank and Trust to eventually succeed him on the board, and Carissa Paxton of the City of Hutchinson to replace outgoing member Jackson Swearer.

Lastly, commissioners will review the 2025-2026 health and dental insurance premium schedule. The county is recommending a 4% increase in health plan premiums to cover rising fixed costs, bringing total funding to just over $4.78 million. Dental plan premiums will remain unchanged, with one IRS-required deductible increase for high-deductible health plans.

Open enrollment for county employees begins Aug. 18, making Wednesday’s vote on premium rates time-sensitive.

After the regularly scheduled Board of&nbsp; County Commissioners Meeting, they will adjourn into a budget work session.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Commission to consider landfill methane agreement

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County is gearing up for its 24th annual Festival of Remembrance, the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year, set for Friday evening at the 1861 Club.&nbsp;

The event helps sustain operations at the Hospice House, one of the few remaining standalone facilities of its kind in Kansas. Administrator Darla Wilson said the funds raised stay entirely within the community, often going toward technology upgrades, facility improvements, and other needs to support patients at the end of life.&nbsp;

“Every dollar stays here,” Wilson said. “If you’ve never been to the house, it’s a home where you can feel at ease, knowing your loved one is cared for by experts.”&nbsp;

The evening will feature silent and live auctions, heavy hors d’oeuvres, and a raffle for a three-year lease on a Ford Maverick pickup donated by Mel Hambelton Ford. General Manager Phil Nightingale said the dealership has partnered with Hospice and HomeCare of Reno County&nbsp;for 15 years to provide vehicles for the fundraiser.&nbsp;

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Nearly 25 years after a fire destroyed the area's longtime consignment auction market, the tradition has returned. Align Auction House opened Aug. 2 in South Hutchinson, marking the first local consignment auction since the blaze that ended an era in 2000.

Nick and Taylor Nelson, alongside investors Paul and Tess Phillips, opened Align Auction House LLC at 612 S. Main in South Hutchinson, drawing 87 registered bidders to the inaugural sale. The event exceeded expectations, the Nelsons said, and set the tone for what they hope will become a cornerstone of the community.

“This is about more than just buying and selling,” Taylor Nelson said. “It’s about carrying forward a legacy, reconnecting people, and creating a place where the community can come together.”

That legacy is personal. Nick Nelson is the grandson of Ron and Jenny Gingerich, longtime owners of Real Estate &amp; Investment Brokers, Inc. (R.E.I.B.), a respected name in the region for generations. R.E.I.B., acquired in 1970 by Joe Gingerich and his sons Ron and Ralph “Doc” Gingerich, and later joined by auctioneer LaVerle Pounds, built a reputation for honesty, integrity and strong business values.

The company’s original auction market served as a central hub for consignments until it was destroyed by fire in September 2000, leaving what the Nelsons call “a noticeable gap” in the community ever since.

“Nick always wanted to bring a consignment auction back to the area,” Taylor said. “When R.E.I.B. was still operating, he hoped to take it over someday, but the timing wasn’t right. Now, thanks to Paul and Tess, we’ve been able to make it happen.”

Nick serves as auctioneer, bringing more than 10 years of industry experience and training from the National Auctioneers Association in Texas. He is known for his quick cadence, high energy and deep knowledge of the trade, qualities reflected in the company’s motto: “Your Goods. Our Gavel. Fair Market Value.”

Align Auction House accepts consignments by appointment throughout the month before each sale. The goal is to sell out completely and start fresh for the next auction. Items range from household goods and collectibles to cars, trailers, equipment, mowers, guns and tools. The Nelsons avoid low-quality mass-produced goods that draw little buyer interest.

The doors open at 9 a.m. on sale days, with bidding starting at 10 a.m. The Nelsons plan to eventually add preview hours the night before and expand from monthly to twice-monthly auctions.

For now, sales are held the first Saturday of each month. The next auction is scheduled for Sept. 6 at the South Hutchinson location.

“The support from our first sale was incredible,” Taylor said. “We’re excited to keep building this, one sale, one bid, one handshake at a time.”

Home sales in south-central Kansas fell slightly in July, but higher prices pushed total sales volume upward, according to the latest report from the WSU Center for Real Estate.

The region saw 988 homes sold last month, a 3% drop from July 2024. Despite fewer transactions, total sales volume climbed 5% to $281.3 million, driven by an 8.7% increase in the median sale price, which reached $250,000.

Homes spent an average of 10 days on the market and sold for 100% of their original asking price.

Active listings rose 26.7% to 2,298 properties, representing 2.6 months of inventory. The median list price for all active homes was $278,045, down 2.4% from a year ago.

New listings increased 5.3% in July, with 1,363 properties hitting the market at a median list price of $250,000. Contracts written rose nearly 4% to 925, and pending contracts climbed 7.2% to 1,190.

The report indicates the market remains competitive, with prices holding strong and homes selling quickly, even as inventory grows.

Residents and businesses in the area from Poplar to Pershing streets and Avenue B to 1st Avenue will experience a planned water service interruption on Tuesday, Aug. 12, as city crews complete infrastructure repairs.

The shutdown will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. while the Water Maintenance team repairs multiple broken valves and installs a new valve on the east side of Hutchinson Middle School 7. City officials say the work is being scheduled ahead of the school year to help ensure reliable water service.

“We appreciate the community’s patience while we complete these necessary improvements,” the city said in a statement.

Updates on the project will be provided as work progresses.

Planned water outage to affect area near HMS-7 Tuesday 

RENO COUNTY —Three people were injured in an accident just after 9a.m. Monday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Toyota Tacoma driven by Jananna&nbsp;Lawson, 62, Hutchinson,&nbsp;was southbound on Buhler Road at U.S. 50. The driver failed to stop at the stop sign.&nbsp; A westbound 2012 Honda Odyssey driven by Jasmin&nbsp;Valle, 38, Newton, and the Toyota were involved in a t-bone collision in the intersection.

EMS transported&nbsp;Lawson to Wesley Medical Center. EMS also transported Valle and a 7-year-old passenger in the Honda to&nbsp;Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

1. Plan ahead. Gather all the details of your property and project and call 811 or submit a request online at least two business days ahead of when you plan to start digging.

2. Safety first. You may not think you need to contact 811 – but you probably do. For digging projects big or small, from installing a mailbox to building a deck or planting a tree, contact 811 to be safe.

3. Be a good neighbor. No one wants to lose service – especially in the August heat. Hitting a buried line in your yard could wipe out service for your entire neighborhood. Contact 811 and be patient until the utilities crews arrive to mark your project area with colored flags or paint.

4. Keep pets inside. They may want to say hello to utility crews marking lines outside, but it’s safest for everyone if they stay secure indoors.
