Ahead of 811 Day, recognized on Aug. 11, Kansas Gas Service encourages everyone planning any outdoor projects to consider how to dig safely before they begin. 

Kansas law requires residents to call 811 or submit a request online at Kansas811.com before starting any digging project to help protect themselves, their property and their community. 

Kansas Gas Service highlights 8 safe digging tips, 1 important reminder and 1 essential number to call—not just on Aug. 11, but all year long.

8 Safe Digging Tips and Reasons to Call 811

1. Plan ahead. Gather all the details of your property and project and call 811 or submit a request online at least two business days ahead of when you plan to start digging.

2. Safety first. You may not think you need to contact 811 – but you probably do. For digging projects big or small, from installing a mailbox to building a deck or planting a tree, contact 811 to be safe.

3. Be a good neighbor. No one wants to lose service – especially in the August heat. Hitting a buried line in your yard could wipe out service for your entire neighborhood. Contact 811 and be patient until the utilities crews arrive to mark your project area with colored flags or paint.

4. Keep pets inside. They may want to say hello to utility crews marking lines outside, but it’s safest for everyone if they stay secure indoors.

5. Color match. Understand what the different colors of flags or paint in your yard mean. For example, natural gas lines are marked with yellow flags. Learn more here. 

6. Leave flags alone. It’s best to leave the flags in place throughout your digging project to be sure you don’t accidentally hit any lines.

The Revenue Neutral Rate hearing is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. on Aug. 25 at the USD 308 Administration Center, 1520 N. Plum. The Fiscal Year 2026 budget hearing will follow at 5:50 p.m. at the same location.

Board members will also consider approving the sale of two properties built by the district’s building trades program, located at 2800 and 2804 Morris Road.

Superintendent Dr. Johnson is also scheduled to present the district’s annual Building Needs Assessment.

Also on the agenda is the consideration of a request to apply for Head Start and Early Head Start nutrition grants.

Caring Hands Humane Society is excited to launch Clear the Shelter Week from Saturday, August 9th through Saturday, August 16, 2025. Caring Hands is calling on the community to help “Clear the Shelter.” Adoption fees will be waived for ALL adoptable pets in efforts to find loving homes for EVERY dog and cat in our care.

Each day we will have an event including Read &amp; Paint with Pets, Wet Wags Pool Day at the Halstead Swimming Pool, Coffee on the Catio, Adventure Tail Day, Wag &amp; Dash Field Day, and Sno-Cone Saturday with The Chill!\

Three-day weather outlook 

UPDATE: Union Pacific Railroad said that, at about 3:15 p.m. Sunday, three railcars derailed in Hutchinson. The incident occurred near North Halstead Street and 4th Avenue. No one was injured and there were no releases. Cleanup is underway.

ORIGINAL STORY: A train derailment Sunday has left Halstead Avenue closed between 4th and 11th avenues, with no timeline for reopening.

According to Hutchinson Police, three empty railcars derailed, blocking the roadway.&nbsp;Drivers are advised to use alternate routes until the area is reopened.

No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.

Hutch Post has reached out to the railroad, and we will provide more information as it becomes available.&nbsp;

I stood at the edge of a two-story dock, frozen.

An hour earlier, we had left our son at a birthday party on a two-story dock overlooking the lake. While he stayed to have fun, my wife, daughter, and I joined with some friends - who also had a son at the party - on the other side of the lake.

As we arrived, I witnessed one of my friends hurl himself into the water. This dock was two stories high as well. As he surfaced, he turned toward me and shouted, “Your turn!”

I barreled up the stairs like I’d done it a thousand times—no big deal, I thought, until I reached the edge.

I’ve climbed mountains, parachuted from planes, even swum with sharks—but today, my legs trembled, my muscles froze, and my heart rate rose. I couldn’t move.

There was no danger—no jagged rocks, no strong current, no real reason not to jump.

And yet, you’d think I was standing on the edge of a skyscraper, being asked to leap without a parachute.

The night before, my young son had been overtired. My wife and I asked him to go upstairs and brush his teeth. He refused.

Not just a firm “no”—a full-blown fit. My usually sweet child transformed from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde. Tantrums and tears, he swore burglars might get him because it was dark.

We knew this wasn’t rational. He’d gone up by himself many times before. But no amount of logic calmed him. For ten minutes, he and I argued—me reasoning, him resisting, both of us escalating.

At the time, I was frustrated. He wasn’t listening. He wasn’t being logical.

But when standing on that dock, feet locked in place, I gained a deeper understanding of my son.

What I was experiencing wasn’t logic either—it was fear. Irrational, involuntary, and very real.

As I stood fighting between fact and fear, my friend and his six-year-old daughter blew past me, jumping in—twice!

The part of the brain that processes fear—the amygdala—doesn’t distinguish between real threats and imagined ones. It reacts the same way whether we’re running from a bear or peering off a perfectly safe platform into a calm lake. The fear feels just as real.

My son wasn’t being stubborn. The fear I felt now was the same fear he had faced the night before. His brain, like mine, was trying to protect him—even when there was nothing to be protected from.

As I emerged from the water, I felt exhilarated—not just from the jump, but from a deeper understanding of my son’s fear and what it takes to inspire courage.

Courage doesn’t mean being unafraid; it means choosing to move forward in spite of the fear. In that quiet realization, I gained a new appreciation for what my son had gone through the night before.

When we picked him up from the birthday party later that day, he was full of swagger.

“Dad! I jumped off the second-story dock five times! It was awesome!”

My daughter chimed in, “Daddy did too—but only once! You should’ve seen how scared he was!”

“We all get scared sometimes,” he grinned. “I might’ve been, too, if it was at night.”

He wasn’t wrong. We do all get scared. Age doesn’t insulate us from fear—it just gives us better words to hide behind. But fear isn’t something to defeat. It’s something to understand. And when it comes to parenting, that understanding might be the most important tool we have.

Because kids don’t need us to be fearless—they need us to show them how to move forward when fear shows up. They need calm more than control. Validation more than correction. Presence more than persuasion.

We all get scared. The key is not to stand paralyzed at the edge forever.

Beyond clothing, Salthawk Community Support helps fund needs such as graduation tassels, prom tickets, and transportation for students. The organization also facilitates mentoring and tutoring programs in partnership with Rise Up Reno Prevention Network, providing one-on-one connections for students who need academic or personal support.

Volunteers are essential to the group’s work, from sorting clothing to mentoring students. Financial donations also play a key role in supporting programs.

The group hosts several fundraisers throughout the year, including a fall chili feed, the popular Men Cook event in January, and a first this summer, a car show, which brought in more than $1,000.

Brown credits the success of the program to its network of partners, including USD 308, local churches, civic groups, and area businesses.

Salthawk Community Support provides support for HHS, HMS-8 students

As the new school year begins, city officials are urging drivers to slow down and remain alert to keep students safe.

School zone speed limits are set at 20 mph and are enforced from 7 to 8:30 a.m. and again from 3 to 4 p.m. The city has installed flashing speed limit signs around three schools and plans to add three more each year until every school is equipped.

Officials warn that speeding in a school zone comes with steep penalties — a base fine that is doubled due to the increased danger to children. Drivers are encouraged to plan routes ahead of time and stay focused when traveling near schools.

Motorists are also reminded of the laws regarding school buses. All vehicles must stop when a bus has its flashing red lights activated and stop sign extended, unless a raised, unpaved barrier separates the lanes. Violations carry a $315 fine.

“Let’s make this a safe school year for everyone,” officials said in a statement.

Three day weather outlook 

PRATT COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 6a.m. Saturday in Pratt County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Toyota Tacoma driven by Paul P. Garcia, Coats, was northbound on Southwest 50th Avenue just south of Southwest 10th Street.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Due to the high beams of a southbound vehicle, Garcia was unable to see. The Toyota traveled off the the roadway to the right, continued in the ditch, re-entered the roadway and entered the left ditch and overturned.

EMS transported Garcia to&nbsp;Pratt Regional Medical Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

 Kim Stanley, a writer and former McPherson College professor, will bring her passion for storytelling to Hutchinson on Saturday, Aug. 16, with a free workshop on writing family stories.

The event, "A Created Guide to Writing Your Family's Stories," is hosted by the Kansas Authors Club and sponsored by Humanities Kansas, will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the Blue Dragon Room at the Hutchinson Community College Student Union.&nbsp;

Stanley, who began her academic career as a Shakespeare scholar before developing expertise in creative nonfiction and poetry, has taught a wide range of courses from freshman composition to world literature. As chair of McPherson College’s English and Modern Languages Department, she encouraged students to explore both the art and craft of writing.

The upcoming workshop will focus on “creative nonfiction,” helping participants transform family memories into compelling narratives. Rather than long periods of silent writing, the session will be interactive, with attendees generating ideas, sharing stories, and receiving tips on structure, detail, and voice.

Stanley has led similar workshops across Kansas, often drawing unexpected gems from participants — such as a Hutchinson woman whose grandmother’s cookbook still smells faintly of smoke from a house fire decades ago.

She says these family tales, whether humorous, dramatic, or bittersweet, carry value beyond the facts. “Story truth is different from factual truth,” Stanley explained. “If your family tells it, it’s important — it says something about who you are.”

The Aug. 16 workshop is open to all, from seasoned writers to those simply curious about putting family history into words.

Writer to hold creative writing workshop

The X-ray machine at the Reno County Courthouse is once again fully operational, restoring normal security screening procedures after being out of service for several weeks.

The machine was taken offline on July 16, 2025, forcing courthouse security staff to manually and visually inspect all bags, boxes, purses, and other items brought into the building. Officials said the change was necessary to maintain safety but acknowledged it caused longer wait times and inconvenience for visitors.

With repairs complete, security personnel have resumed using the X-ray scanner, which speeds up the screening process and reduces the need for physical bag searches.

 The Cosmosphere is deeply saddened to announce the passing of&nbsp;Captain Jim Lovell, the revered astronaut, famed for his leadership during the Apollo&nbsp;13 mission, passed away on Aug. 7, 2025, at the age of 97 in Lake Forest, Illinois,&nbsp;surrounded by loved ones.&nbsp;

“The Cosmosphere was saddened to learn of Captain Lovell's passing. He was an icon&nbsp;and true American hero. The Cosmosphere is proud to carry on his legacy through&nbsp;the display of several artifacts associated with the missions including the Apollo 13&nbsp;Command Module, Odyssey,” said Jim Remar, President and CEO at the&nbsp;Cosmosphere.&nbsp;

Captain Lovell’s unwavering composure and ingenuity during the 1970 Apollo 13&nbsp;mission, referred to as NASA's “successful failure”, saved the lives of his fellow&nbsp;astronauts and inspired millions. Other missions during his career included work on&nbsp;Gemini 7, Gemini 12, and Apollo 8, the first mission to orbit the Moon.&nbsp;

Cosmosphere mourns loss of Capt. Jim Lovell

Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) and Barton Community College have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishing a new partnership aimed at expanding access to respiratory care education and addressing a growing workforce need in central Kansas.

Through this agreement, students from Barton will complete their general education requirements at Barton and then have the opportunity to transition into HutchCC’s Respiratory Care Program. The partnership was developed in response to an increased demand for respiratory care professionals in Barton’s service area, which includes nine regional hospitals."

This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to meeting the healthcare workforce needs of our communities," said Dr. Tricia Paramore, President of Hutchinson Community College. "By working together, we are creating clearer pathways for students and helping ensure that Kansas hospitals have access to the skilled respiratory therapists they urgently need."

Dr. Marcus Garstecki, President of Barton Community College, echoed the value of the partnership: “We’ve seen a significant increase in the demand for respiratory care professionals across our service area. Partnering with HutchCC allows us to provide our students with a high-quality, accessible path into this critical field, while also supporting the healthcare systems in our region.”

HutchCC, Barton CC announce partnership

As students across Reno County head back to school, the Rise Up Reno Prevention Network is ramping up its efforts to support youth through mentoring programs, mental health education, and community outreach.

Lisa Orrison and John Young, leaders with the nonprofit organization, recently joined the BW Morning Show to share how Rise Up Reno serves not just USD 308, but all school districts in Reno County. Their goal: help kids make healthy choices and ensure every student feels connected.

"We run several programs around the community, but a lot of it's really focused on giving, helping kids make healthy choices, as well as informing the community about Mental Health Suicide Prevention." said Young.&nbsp; "Also, we have mentoring programs as well as also we have some leadership programs in the high school and middle schools as well. So, we do a lot of different things."

Young tells us, "We do a training with all of our mentors, as well as we do background checks and all of that. And then also we kind of will go on through the process. I'll kind of talk to them and get to know them and know their interest. And then that way, especially if they're doing maybe our more of our one to one base mentoring, it kind of helps, helps me match them up with a kid that might have some of the same interest and and just help them make a good connection."

As schools reopen, mental health remains a critical focus. Orrison encouraged families to start a routine, prioritize sleep and nutrition, and most importantly—talk. Ask your kids how their day was. Even short conversations can open the door to deeper discussions.&nbsp; Orrison tells us, "If you see something, say something, it's okay to ask if you're struggling.".&nbsp;

Orrison added, "Parents can also call us and refer their student to the mentoring program. So, if you want your student to have a one-to-one match, you can call us and give us their information, and John can get that set up for you

Students, too, are encouraged to look out for one another. “If a student knows that a friend or, you know, peer is struggling, the best thing they can do is say, I will go with you to talk to someone who can help you." Orrison said.&nbsp;“So, all of the, all of the staff is trained to help a student. They know best, they have protocol in place for that."

Most of the focus of Rise Up Reno’s programming is driven by data from the Kansas Communities That Care (KCTC) survey. Which is a survey given to sixth, eighth, tenth and twelfth grade students.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Orrison tells us, "That survey lets us know best what they're dealing with.&nbsp; And then there's data from many different resources, you know, so we look at that data, and then we decide what's happening in our community, and then we start tackling that head on."&nbsp;

Rise Up Reno also partners with the Reno County Suicide Prevention Coalition and has strong working relationships with local mental health professionals. "We wouldn't have a problem calling someone and saying, Hey, I've got this issue. What can we do about it?" Orrison said.&nbsp;

And then that way, especially if they're doing maybe our more of our one to one base mentoring, it kind of helps, helps me match them up with a kid that might have some of the same interest and and just help them make a good connection."As schools reopen, mental health remains a critical focus. Orrison encouraged families to start a routine, prioritize sleep and nutrition, and most importantly—talk. Ask your kids how their day was. Even short conversations can open the door to deeper discussions.&nbsp; Orrison tells us, "If you see something, say something, it's okay to ask if you're struggling.".&nbsp;Orrison added, "Parents can also call us and refer their student to the mentoring program. So, if you want your student to have a one-to-one match, you can call us and give us their information, and John can get that set up for youStudents, too, are encouraged to look out for one another. “If a student knows that a friend or, you know, peer is struggling, the best thing they can do is say, I will go with you to talk to someone who can help you." Orrison said.&nbsp;“So, all of the, all of the staff is trained to help a student. They know best, they have protocol in place for that."Most of the focus of Rise Up Reno’s programming is driven by data from the Kansas Communities That Care (KCTC) survey. Which is a survey given to sixth, eighth, tenth and twelfth grade students.&nbsp; &nbsp;Orrison tells us, "That survey lets us know best what they're dealing with.&nbsp; And then there's data from many different resources, you know, so we look at that data, and then we decide what's happening in our community, and then we start tackling that head on."&nbsp;Rise Up Reno also partners with the Reno County Suicide Prevention Coalition and has strong working relationships with local mental health professionals. "We wouldn't have a problem calling someone and saying, Hey, I've got this issue. What can we do about it?" Back to School: Start dates set for Hutch Post area districts

HARVEY COUNTY—&nbsp;Matthew Ratzlaff, 38, of Burrton, entered guilty pleas Wednesday in Harvey County District Court to Kidnapping and 2 counts of Aggravated Indecent Solicitation of a Child involving sexual crimes against a child under the age of 10, according to&nbsp; Harvey County Attorney Heather L. Figger.

At the time of the offenses, Ratzlaff was on post-release supervision. His guilty pleas mark a significant step toward justice for the victim and community.

Sentencing is scheduled to take place on October 8.

Ratzlaff faces a potential prison sentence of 283 to 315 months in the custody of the Kansas Department of Corrections, followed by lifetime post-release supervision. He will also be subject to lifetime registration as a sex offender.

“This case is a painful reminder of the seriousness of crimes against children,” said County Attorney Heather L. Figger. “We are committed to holding offenders accountable and pursuing justice for the most vulnerable members of our community.”
