The Hutchinson City Council moved forward on several key initiatives during its meeting Tuesday evening, ranging from infrastructure improvements to community event approvals.

The council issued a proclamation declaring August 22 as Antique Tractor Preservation Day, recognizing the importance of preserving agricultural history.

On the consent agenda, members approved more than $2.3 million in expenditures, accepted the July city financial report, appointed Joseph Kelber to the Airport Advisory Committee, and approved resolutions allowing special events for Brewfest and the Southwest Bricktown Fiesta.

One of the major business items was approval of $1.7 million in general obligation bonds to fund repairs to the Woodie Seat Avenue C Bridge. The project will include structural upgrades, a new concrete overlay, improved lighting, and enhanced pedestrian pathways.

The council also set a public hearing for October 7 to consider the creation of a Landmark Reinvestment Housing Incentive District.

In other action, council members received an update on the ongoing Woodie Seat Phase II project and sent a zoning request for property at 23rd and Lorraine back to the Planning Commission. The council asked that restrictions be added on the types of businesses that could operate at the location.

Council members also directed staff to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) for management services at Memorial Hall, with the intent of establishing a 10-year contract for facility management.

The next Hutchinson City Council meeting is scheduled for September 2 at City Hall.

Council approves bonds, new RFP request for Memorial Hall 

NEWTON – The Harvey County Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals is inviting the public to provide feedback on zoning regulations for accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in rural areas of the county.

ADUs are secondary living spaces built on the same property as a primary residence. They are typically small, one- or two-bedroom units and may serve as housing for aging parents, adult children, farm workers, or guests. Examples include attached apartments, small modular homes, pool houses, or living quarters in sheds or outbuildings.

The Planning Commission is responsible for zoning regulations in unincorporated areas of Harvey County. Incorporated cities maintain authority within their own boundaries.

Residents can participate in the process by completing a survey, which is available online through Sept. 19. Paper copies of the survey can also be picked up at the Planning, Zoning and Environmental Department in the Harvey County Courthouse.

The survey is open to all, with demographic information collected solely for data purposes. Once responses are compiled, the findings will be presented to the Planning Commission and later reviewed by the Harvey County Commission for consideration.

Runners, joggers, walkers, and even “walker-talkers” are invited to take part in the third annual B-Well Frolic 5K, set for Saturday, Sept. 27, during the Buhler Frolic festival.

The community-focused event encourages participants of all ages and abilities to get moving, whether for fitness, fun, or fellowship. Registration is open now, with a deadline of Aug. 23 to sign up. The United Way of Reno County (UWRC) has announced that tickets and tables are now available for Spark Tank Live!, a new community event designed to empower local nonprofits with funding and visibility.

The high-energy competition is set for Thursday, Sept. 25, at the 1861 Club on the Kansas State Fairgrounds. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with finalist pitches beginning at 6 p.m., followed by a dessert reception at 8:30 p.m.

Four nonprofit organizations will take the stage to present bold, community-driven solutions in UWRC’s focus areas of youth opportunity, healthy community, financial stability, and community resiliency. More than $25,000 in funding is up for grabs, with finalists competing for awards decided by a panel of judges and audience votes.

This year’s judges include Daniel Friesen, co-founder and CIO of IdeaTek; Dr. Kay Hart of the Hutchinson Clinic; Mike King, CEO of Lumineo Sign; and Sheila Regehr, corporate affairs manager for Dillons/Kroger. UWRC Spark Tank tickets available 

Hutchinson Public Schools&nbsp;has launched the new school year on a high note, with district leaders reporting a smooth start for both staff and students.&nbsp;

However, a major topic this semester will be the upcoming bond election, set for Nov. 4. District leaders say the proposal addresses critical needs ranging from early childhood education to middle school transitions.&nbsp;

USD 308 Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson explained that the district currently operates pre-kindergarten programs at eight different sites, a system many families find confusing. The bond would consolidate early childhood education at a central location, ensuring smoother entry into kindergarten.&nbsp;

The proposal also includes building a new middle school to house grades six through eight, reducing the number of school transitions students face. “Relationships are key during these developmental years,” Johnson said. “Fewer transitions mean stronger continuity for students and parents.”&nbsp;

The district plans to build on land already owned at 23rd and Severance, moving the current soccer field to the high school campus and partnering with the city on new baseball and practice fields.&nbsp;

The bond proposal totals $109 million, less than the inflation-adjusted cost of the district’s last major bond in 2006. Officials estimate the tax increase would be about five mills, or under $5 per month on a $100,000 home.&nbsp;

“This is about preparing for the future of our students and our community,” Johnson said. “The last bond created opportunities that still benefit students today, not just in Hutchinson but across the region. We see this as the next step in building excellence.”&nbsp;

If approved, the bond would also repurpose existing facilities. Hutchinson Middle School 8 would become a hub for student support services, with early childhood programs located on the first floor. Other properties, including Hutchinson Middle School 7 and district offices, may be sold or redeveloped. Johnson said several local organizations have already expressed interest.&nbsp;

“I know the city council is working very hard to take care of blight in our town, and USD 308, Board of Education does not want to add to that. So, there would be a plan for all of those buildings,” Johnson said. “These facilities are valuable and can serve new purposes in the community.”&nbsp;

Dr. Johnson emphasized that the bond is not just about infrastructure, but about preparing students for long-term success. From kindergarten readiness to career and technical education, they say the goal is to create a seamless learning experience.&nbsp;

“Our schools are strong at the elementary and high school levels,” Dr. Johnson said. “This bond allows us to strengthen the middle years and early childhood, ensuring every student is ready for the future.”&nbsp;

The proposal seeks to rezone the property from R-5 High Density Residential District to C-1 Office Commercial District to allow for construction of a car wash. The council will also consider a request for proposals for management services for Memorial Hall. &nbsp;

The proposal seeks to rezone the property from R-5 High Density Residential District to C-1 Office Commercial District to allow for construction of a car wash. Four Hutchinson teens returned this summer with new skills and inspiration after attending Eagle U, the nation’s premier youth success and leadership retreat.

Participants included Graciela Medina, the Boys &amp; Girls Club’s 2025 Youth of the Year; Gabe Marcum, a past Junior Youth of the Year; Danny Boone, Vision Leader and longtime Club member; and Clancy Cox of Hutchinson High School.

Over the course of five days, the students took part in an intensive program designed to give them what organizers call “a seven-year head start” on their futures. Sessions focused on career planning, public speaking, networking, goal setting, and one-on-one mentorship through roundtables with accomplished professionals.

The retreat emphasizes not only academic and career preparation but also personal growth and leadership. Organizers say students leave with a clear plan for success, a stronger sense of confidence, and meaningful connections with mentors.

Boys &amp; Girls Club leaders say they are proud of the teens’ dedication and growth. “These young leaders are building the foundation to become role models in every arena of life,” the organization said in a statement.

Hutch Post has learned that a subcontractor has been allowed to step away from the ongoing Woodie Seat Project.

Phase II of the project, which began earlier this spring, is expected to be completed by March 2026. The work will connect Hutchinson to South Hutchinson, continuing a major infrastructure improvement effort.

When contacted, the subcontractor confirmed to Hutch Post that they were given the option to either remain on the project or walk away. They elected to remove themselves.

Jessica Woodyard, Public Communications Director for the City of Hutchinson, said the city has been in communication with the general contractor overseeing the work. According to her, the contractor indicated that some decisions needed to be made regarding the project. Woodyard added that the contractor has already vetted a new subcontractor to step in and continue the work.

Woodyard noted that a presentation on the Woodie Seat project will be made at Tuesday evening's city council meeting.&nbsp; That meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.&nbsp;

Subcontractor changed on Woodie Seat Phase II project 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Marcus &amp; Millichap, a leading commercial real estate brokerage firm, announced Monday the $3.4 million sale of a retail strip center and Dillon’s Fuel Station ground lease in Hutchinson.

YODER – Yoder Heritage Day is set to bring thousands of visitors to town this Saturday, Aug. 23, with a full schedule of family-friendly activities, live music, horse demonstrations, and a fireworks finale.

The celebration kicks off early with a pancake and sausage feed at 6 a.m. at the downtown Pavilion. Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy food vendors, open shops and restaurants, and a variety of activities highlighting the Amish and rural traditions of the Yoder community.

A parade beginning mid-morning is one of the day’s main attractions. Unlike most parades, horses lead the procession, reflecting the agricultural and equestrian heritage of the community. The parade typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes and features local businesses, floats, and plenty of excitement for children.

Music will fill the day with performances by several groups. The Color Green Band will play country gospel at 8:30 a.m., followed by Close to Land, a local up-and-coming band, at 11:45 a.m. The evening entertainment features the Country Road Ramblers, an eight-member group from southern Indiana specializing in bluegrass, country, and gospel, performing at dusk.

Heritage Day also showcases horse-related events throughout the day, including draft horse plowing demonstrations, a visiting horse drill team from Ohio featuring eight Friesian horses, a horse fun show, and pony rides for children.

For kids, the always-popular pedal pull begins at 1 p.m., with sign-ups starting at noon. Other attractions include pony rides, a kids’ play area, and historical exhibits hosted by the Yoder Historical Society, displaying old photos and drawings of the community.

The afternoon will feature horsepower of another kind with working tractor pulls, antique tractor displays, and truck pulls, drawing large crowds of spectators.

As the day winds down, families can enjoy food from a wide range of vendors—including barbecue, turkey legs, and Pronto Pups—before gathering for the evening concert and fireworks show that traditionally closes the festival.

Organizers expect as many as 10,000 visitors to attend this year’s event, boosted by cooler weather with temperatures forecast around 85 degrees. Admission is free, thanks to the support of more than 80 local sponsors.

Yoder Heritage Day is Saturday

MCPHERSON COUNTY&nbsp;—A McPherson County man died in an accident just after 10a.m. Sunday in McPherson County.

The McPherson County Sheriff reported a GMC Acadia driven by 47-year-old Tawny O'Hara of Galva was attempting to make a left turn onto Comanche from 22nd. A Honda motorcycle driven by a 65-year-old Terrance Regehr of Galva attempted to pass the SUV.&nbsp; 

The motorcycle struck the driver's side of the Acadia. Moundridge EMS provided lifesaving aid to Regehr but he was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to the Sheriff's office.&nbsp; O'Hara was not injured.&nbsp; The sheriff's office released no additional details.

Authorities responded late Sunday morning to a fatal accident near 22nd and Comanche in McPherson County.

The McPherson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies were on the scene around 11:00 a.m. and advised travelers to avoid the area while roads were closed.

By 11:55 a.m., officials reported that the roadway had been reopened to traffic.

The accident remains under investigation, and no additional details have been released at this time. The Sheriff’s Office said further updates will be provided as they become available.

Ag Minute:  Pesticides no longer major threat

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas is making history today, honoring the voices, vision, and impact of women in sports media with the first-ever observance of Women in Sports Broadcasting Day.&nbsp;

The day was proclaimed by Gov. Laura Kelly at the urging of KSN-TV sports anchor and reporter Asia Cymone Smith, whose advocacy turned a personal mission into a statewide recognition. For Smith, the proclamation is more than a ceremonial gesture, it’s a statement of value in an industry where women still make up just 38% of sports broadcasting roles in Kansas, according to a review of recent staff directories from stations in Wichita, Topeka, and Kansas City.&nbsp;

“It’s something that felt surreal, something that I’d been thinking about for a long time,” Smith said. “I wanted to make sure that women, us hard-working women who are also putting in work here, are recognized. This is a testament to the recognition and the work we’ve put in. And it highlights contributions of the former women in sports broadcasting and the ones to come.”&nbsp;

Smith, who also serves as Miss Kansas USA, has made women in sports broadcasting a central part of her public platform. She operates a mentorship initiative called Girls Talk Game, aimed at uplifting young girls who aspire to careers in the field through school visits, group sessions and one-on-one coaching. “I want to be the help that I always wish I had when I first got started,” she said. “I want to be that person that teaches them the ropes so they don’t have to struggle and so they have the same opportunities to learn and get the knowledge they need to succeed.”&nbsp;

That desire was shaped by her own experiences. Early in her career, she was once told, “We’re not here to hold your hand or teach you the ropes.” 

It was a moment that stayed with her, and one she vowed not to repeat with the next generation. 

“For every little girl who really is watching the TV news and sees us, I want them to know that it’s possible, no matter what other people tell you, when they tell you, you don’t belong in the industry,” Smith said. “Those are comments we get all the time. And I want them to know those people can’t define your success.”&nbsp;

The proclamation also honors the women who have inspired others on the national stage. It names Kansas-connected journalists such as Becky Dixon, the first woman to co-host ABC’s Wide World of Sports; Aminia Smith, a former sports journalist in Lawrence now hosting ESPN’s SportsCenter; and Kendra Douglas, a former Wichita sports anchor now working as an NBA sideline reporter. Smith said seeing them succeed at such high levels serves as proof of what’s possible. “They’re inspirations to us who are sitting here today,” she said.&nbsp;

Joining Smith in celebrating the day are KAKE-TV sports director Micaela Dea and KWCH-TV multimedia journalist Rachel Hallam. Though they work at competing stations, the three regularly cross paths on the sidelines, at press conferences and in locker rooms, and have forged a bond over shared experiences. 

“We see each other all the time,” Dea said. “I knew from the onset of joining this career I wanted to be one of those women that helped other women. If I could have my small part in making that easier for the next woman, that’s amazing. And of course, I want to pay tribute to all the other women before us that have literally trailblazed the way.”&nbsp;

Dea, who became KAKE’s first female sports director last year, said she is encouraged by how far the industry has come. “I can’t imagine where it will be in the next twenty years or the next couple of decades,” she said. “But I definitely am proud to be one of those women in sports that loves to empower other women.”&nbsp;

Hallam said the observance is a meaningful acknowledgment of both the progress made and the challenges that remain. “It means everything,” Hallam said. “It’s hard to be in this industry in the first place, and then how hard it is to be a woman in this industry. Just for everybody to finally recognize that, not just ourselves and not just the other women that are in this industry, but to know that it is still a growing industry and we still have opportunities laid out in front of us.”&nbsp;

Smith said she hopes today’s recognition sparks more opportunities for women in leadership roles, production and high-profile analyst positions in men’s sports. “There’s a lot of leadership positions I think can still be filled,” she said. “Women have completely trailblazed and transformed the sideline reporter role. But why not have those same broadcasters be analysts for the NBA and for the NFL? Our perspective is important and should be shown, too.” She pointed to growing momentum in women’s sports coverage, from WNBA expansion to record-breaking college softball and volleyball crowds, as proof that the appetite is there for more women’s voices. “I think it’s continuing to grow, and that’s great to see,” she said.&nbsp;

While Women in Sports Broadcasting Day is new, those celebrating it hope it becomes an annual touchpoint for progress. “I hope every girl watching sees this and thinks, ‘That can be me,’” Smith said. “Because it absolutely can.”&nbsp;

The proclamation urges Kansans to join in recognizing the achievements of women in sports media and to support ongoing efforts toward equality in the profession. For Smith, Dea and Hallam, that means continuing to show up for each other, and for the young women they hope will follow in their footsteps.&nbsp;

“We’re supposed to be competitors,” Hallam said, “but we’re constantly having each other’s backs. That’s what makes this day so important, it’s a reminder that we’re here, we can do our job, and we’re not going anywhere.”&nbsp;

And of course, I want to pay tribute to all the other women before us that have literally trailblazed the way.”&nbsp;Dea, who became KAKE’s first female sports director last year, said she is encouraged by how far the industry has come. “I can’t imagine where it will be in the next twenty years or the next couple of decades,” she said. “But I definitely am proud to be one of those women in sports that loves to empower other women.”&nbsp;Hallam said the observance is a meaningful acknowledgment of both the progress made and the challenges that remain. “It means everything,” Hallam said. “It’s hard to be in this industry in the first place, and then how hard it is to be a woman in this industry. Just for everybody to finally recognize that, not just ourselves and not just the other women that are in this industry, but to know that it is still a growing industry and we still have opportunities laid out in front of us.”&nbsp;Smith said she hopes today’s recognition sparks more opportunities for women in leadership roles, production and high-profile analyst positions in men’s sports. “There’s a lot of leadership positions I think can still be filled,” she said. “Women have completely trailblazed and transformed the sideline reporter role. But why not have those same broadcasters be analysts for the NBA and for the NFL? Our perspective is important and should be shown, too.” She pointed to growing momentum in women’s sports coverage, from WNBA expansion to record-breaking college softball and volleyball crowds, as proof that the appetite is there for more women’s voices. “I think it’s continuing to grow, and that’s great to see,” she said.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>While Women in Sports Broadcasting Day is new, those celebrating it hope it becomes an annual touchpoint for progress. “I hope every girl watching sees this and thinks, ‘That can be me,’” Smith said. “Because it absolutely can.”&nbsp;The proclamation urges Kansans to join in recognizing the achievements of women in sports media and to support ongoing efforts toward equality in the profession. For Smith, Dea and Hallam, that means continuing to show up for each other, and for the young women they hope will follow in their footsteps.&nbsp;“We’re supposed to be competitors,” Hallam said, “but we’re constantly having each other’s backs. Strataca is thrilled to announce that we officially reopened to the public this past weekend after a brief, unexpected closure for maintenance. Strataca releases statement following reopening

Firefighters rescued three pets from a burning home Saturday afternoon after a blaze broke out on Halsey Drive.

According to the Hutchinson Fire Department, crews were dispatched around 4:40 p.m. to find heavy fire on the back side of a single-story house. Firefighters quickly launched an exterior attack to contain the flames before moving inside to search the residence.

During their search, crews located three pets trapped inside. One dog had to be given oxygen after being pulled from the home, but all three animals survived. No residents were home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

Fire officials said the fire was brought under control within about 30 minutes. Crews then remained on scene to check for hotspots and assist with the investigation. 

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Three Pets Rescued in Hutchinson House Fire

U.S. Senator Roger Marshall is on the road this month as part of his 100-stop tour across Kansas, meeting with residents, farmers, and business leaders to discuss key issues facing the state.

Marshall said one of the highlights of the tour so far has been visiting with agricultural producers, including a stop at the Reno County Farm Bureau. He noted that while many grain farmers are struggling with low commodity prices and high interest rates, there are bright spots in the beef and dairy industries.

“We finished up last night in Reno County with a big, optimistic crowd,” Marshall said. “Farmers are under pressure with rising loan costs and poor wheat and corn prices, but there’s hope with new trade deals and support programs like updated Title I reference prices.”

A key theme of Marshall’s stops is mental health, particularly in rural areas. He cited alarming statistics, including that more farmers today die by suicide than from farm accidents.

“Mental illness and addiction are in the same bucket of issues,” Marshall said. “We’re seeing an epidemic of mental health challenges in youth, in mothers after childbirth, and in farming families. Community health centers, like Prairie View, are doing a great job responding to people in crisis.”

Marshall also highlighted Kansas’ manufacturing strength, pointing to demand for American-made products and challenges finding enough workers to meet it. He said provisions in what he calls the “big, beautiful bill” – such as removing taxes on overtime pay – are helping ease the strain.

The senator spent part of Friday visiting Hutchinson Community College, where he touted new flexibility in federal Pell Grants that allow short-term training programs to qualify for assistance.

“Not everyone wants a four-year degree,” Marshall said. “Kansas community and technical colleges are training welders, electricians, and health care workers who can start jobs earning $60,000 to $80,000 a year with little to no debt.”

Marshall said the tour will continue through Labor Day weekend before he returns to Washington, where Congress faces a September 30 deadline to fund the federal government.

HPD to participate in impaired driving campaign

HUTCHINSON — <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/7aeaf800-fb59-44d2-8983-9179d6701101">After months of being out-of-network</a>, Hutchinson Clinic and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas have reached a new agreement that will bring the clinic back into the BCBSKS network starting Sept. 1.

In a joint statement, the two organizations said:

“We are pleased to announce Hutchinson Clinic will return to the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas network on September 1st, 2025. We understand how important it is for our patients to have access to local providers and services they know and trust."

Hutchinson Clinic, a physician-owned practice serving Reno County and surrounding areas, had previously been an in-network provider for BCBS members for many years. That changed on Jan. 1, 2025, when contract negotiations broke down over reimbursement rates, and the clinic left the BCBS Marketplace network.
The move prompted concern from patients, many of whom faced higher out-of-pocket costs to continue seeing their longtime providers.

Clinic leaders at the time cited unsustainable payment rates as the reason for the departure, while reaffirming their commitment to keeping care local. The clinic’s Patient Advocacy Center worked with BCBSKS members to help them understand their costs and options.

Starting September 1, BCBSKS members will again be able to receive in-network benefits at Hutchinson Clinic locations. The change applies to both existing patients and new BCBSKS members seeking care from the clinic’s physicians and specialists.

HUTCHINSON – Railroad crews with BNSF will begin work on several crossings in Hutchinson starting Sunday, August 17. The projects are expected to take about four weeks to complete.

The crossings scheduled for repair include: •&nbsp; North Pershing Street - between First and Second Ave.&nbsp; •&nbsp; North Severance Street - at First Avenue&nbsp; •&nbsp; North Lorraine Street - between First Avenue and East Avenue A
