The Bethel, Connecticut, company works hand-in-hand with consulting engineers, building owners and contractors to design boiler room solutions that ensure a successful new or updated plant. Under the agreement, ACS will represent Superior’s industrial watertube boilers and certain other ancillary equipment.

In addition to New York City, the ACS territory covers northern New Jersey, Connecticut and New York state.

The vast majority of the funds for the United Way campaign are in here in Reno County.

"At the end of December, I'm really excited to tell you that we hit $1 million," said Lisa Gleason with the United Way of Reno County. "That is certainly getting us closer to our goal. As of this morning, we're sitting at $1,040,000."

The goal was actually trimmed a bit this year.

"The original goal is $1.1 million," Gleason said. "We lowered that goal just because of the pandemic. Last year we raised $1,250,000. Certainly the need is that if not greater."

Though quite a bit of the money is taken out from employees of local businesses through payroll deduction, no matter how small your donation, if you want to give, they can help you.

"About 60% of what we bring in, it comes through employers and their payroll deductions," Gleason said. "We certainly have corporate gifts that help make that happen as well. The other 35 to 40% really comes from individuals just giving of their resources to help us make that difference."

Kan. — The Hutchinson Salvation Army thanked the public Monday for their generosity during the Christmas season.

"Kettle goal this year was $60,000," said Major Paul James. "We actually raised $66,183. Our overall goal was $230,000. We still have yet about $44,000 left to go and we have until the end of January for that."

James praised downtown business owners Mark Buckley of the Toy Depot and Kevin Rule of the Sleep Shoppe and Furniture Gallery.

"Mark and Kevin they both kind of stepped up and said, how can we help you," James said. "One of the ways they wanted to help was to have bells rang out in front of their stores."

Toy Depot raised $1,097.05 the Sleep Shoppe raised $1480.60 and Smith's Market raised $480.

"Last year, I think we raised about $65,000," James said. "This year, we exceeded last year by $1000."

Kansas Farm Bureau honors tradition and heritage of family farms

Hutchinson firefighters fought a garage fire late Sunday night.

Just after 11 p.m. Sunday, firefighters responded to 213 E. Osborne for the report of a structure fire.  Fire damage was limited to the garage.  Occupants were home at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.

Fire crews remained on scene for over one hour for overhaul and investigation.  Investigators determined the cause of the fire to be from faulty electrical wiring.

Garage fire in Hutchinson Sunday night

Eagle Communications announced this week that longtime employee-owner Nancy Swain has been named market manager for its Hutchinson market, effective Jan. 1.

Swain, who has been with Eagle Radio of Hutchinson since 1997, replaces Ben Waters, who has served as the market manager since Oct. 1. Waters is relocating to Salina to oversee operations in that market.

"We are excited to have Nancy lead our operations in Hutchinson," Eagle CEO Kurt David said. "She has a great rapport with the community and has great relationships with fellow employee-owners in the media center. She trained under longtime Eagle leader Terry Drouhard, who leaves a great legacy of success in Hutch."

Drouhard has retired, effective Dec. 31 after 31 years with Eagle Communications.

"Nancy's selection as manager is the perfect choice to lead our Eagle Radio stations and Hutch Post in Hutchinson," Drouhard said. "Her proven career in broadcasting and marketing through the years has prepared her to help our business partners grow and our listeners and readers enjoy the Eagle product. My congratulations to Nancy in her new role to serve the Hutchinson community and surrounding area."

In Hutchinson, Eagle operates radio stations Country 102.9, KWBW and My 93.1, as well as Hutch Post.

Swain named general manager for Eagle Radio of Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County is considering extending
COVID sick leave benefits it had offered in 2020 to its employees this year. 

Because of the continued pandemic and vaccinations still
some time in the future, the County Commission will consider a request from
Human Resources Director Renee Harris to extend the current sick leave program. 

Under the proposal, any employee suffering from COVID, who is in quarantine
or who is caring for a family member who is sick can apply for the extension, providing they haven’t exhausted their hours.

Also Tuesday, the Commission will consider a request to vacate
an easement that was to be used for a street in the Rolling Hills Subdivision.
Since the street was never constructed, a landowner wants the area vacated so
the land can be better used.

Tuesday’s meeting of the Reno County Commission begins at 9
a.m. at the Reno County Courthouse.

County Commission to consider extending sick leave 

With the new year upon us, attention will soon turn to the legislative session beginning Jan. 11 in Topeka. I’m incredibly grateful for the elected officials we have. Legislative sessions are always about making tough choices on allocating resources that are too few to address problems that appear unending. This upcoming one is set to be one of the toughest.

One reason is because we’re just beginning to emerge from the pandemic that’s upended life as we once knew it. The continued need for social distancing will severely limit floor passes, building access and other interactions legislators have with the public in the Capitol.

Technology will allow the public and lobbyists to participate in the process of drafting laws, but we know it’s just a stopgap measure. The business of the state will still get done, but there might be a few more bumps in the road. That’s why it’s more important than ever to open a dialogue with your Kansas representative and senator.

In addition to access in the Capitol, there will likely be fewer legislative coffees, forums and other chances to interact with our leaders until there’s widespread inoculation. Sending emails, making phone calls and writing letters will be the only reliable way to ensure your voice is heard on the subjects that matter to you.

At Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) we have three priorities in this year’s session: broadband, taxes and water. Our advocacy staff will still weigh in on any proposed legislation important to our members, but those are the big three this session.

Access to a vibrant, highspeed broadband network is essential to the future of both rural and urban Kansas. One of the few bright spots of the pandemic has been the ability for a significant portion of our population to work wherever there’s adequate signal. Moving forward, broadband will provide new opportunities for the delivery of health care, education, entertainment, business development and enhance the capabilities of precision agriculture.

Of course, deploying broadband access to every Kansan will take time and money, which is why taxes make our list. The state’s tax coffers aren’t quiet as full as they otherwise would be because of the pandemic. After digging through the couch cushions, legislators might get the idea to start tinkering with the tax code to fill in the gaps.

Such changes are always fraught and with the public limited in how it can interact with legislators, this session is especially prone to any tinkering having unintended consequences. KFB will continue to advocate for the use-value system in place now that accurately and appropriately values agricultural lands. Agricultural operations are businesses and sales tax exemptions are necessary to continue fair and equal tax treatment for business-related purchases.

Finally, KFB will continue its support for the basic tenets of Kansas water law. Knowing, understanding and implementing these principles provide our members the ability to plan, invest and defend their private property rights for one of the state’s most valuable resources.

I know these aren’t the only issues legislators will face in the upcoming session, but they’re vitally important for all Kansans. I thank all of our elected officials for their service and wish them well in the endeavor they will soon embark on.

save money on items for the home. 

The
Furniture &amp; Mattress Clearance Center is now open at the corner of Sherman
and Main. The new business is in the former location of The Main Street Event
Center. The new store features factory close outs, discontinued furnishings,
special purchases and one-of-a-kind pieces. 

The
Furniture &amp; Mattress Clearance Center will be open Tuesday through
Saturday. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday – Friday and 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday.

New furniture store opens in Hutchinson

Kan. —&nbsp; A reminder that USD 308 students are still on holiday break. Students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade will return to class in the hybrid model on Jan. 11 instead of Jan. 4. Hutchinson High School students will return to class remotely on Jan. 11 for two weeks before returning to the hybrid model on Jan. 25. The Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy will also return on Jan. 11 in the hybrid mode.

Under the hybrid model, students with names starting with A through L attend in-person classes on Mondays and Wednesdays while students with names starting with M through Z attend in-person classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All students in the hybrid model learn remotely on Fridays.

Licensed staff are still off Monday and Tuesday with the remainder of this week spent in workdays and professional development. Classified staff have a work schedule determined by their supervisors.

USD 308 students still off until January 11

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County overall case count is at 445 as of Sunday afternoon. The death count among Reno County residents is at 104.

The Correctional Facility cluster type has eight active cases measured by the county's COVID-19 dashboard. The Long Term Care Facility cluster type has 66 active cases. Forty people within those clusters have died. There are 40 active clusters in the county.

Out of 6,648 total cases since the beginning of the pandemic, there are 439 cases in the community at large. 6,099 people have recovered thus far.

Twenty-one Reno County residents are in the hospital. Three hundred thirteen total have been hospitalized. Ninety-four have been admitted to the ICU and 31 have been intubated. These are Reno County resident numbers regardless of where they are hospitalized.

The community's positive test rate is at 26.80%, with the overall positive test rate at 32.17%. 32.88% of the population has been tested.

There are now two free public testing sites, one in the Cosmosphere parking lot in Hutchinson and one at Simply Good Overstocks parking lot in South Hutchinson. They are open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council will take action on a request from Interfaith Housing to rezone a parcel of land located near the Dillons Marketplace along East 34th Avenue and Jewell Street. The plan is to build 12 duplexes in the area.

The plan to build housing for the elderly and disabled is being met with opposition from some in the area. Many feel that the new high-density housing will add to the traffic problems already seen in the area. Most of the streets in the area are underdeveloped without curb and gutter, according to residents.

Others in the neighborhood feel that their access to and from the area is already too limited and any type of emergency, such as a wildfire, would be further hampered if the addition was put in.

Planning Director Amy Allison reported to the planning commission that, with the homes being designated for the elderly and disabled, the amount of traffic in the area would not increase, noting that studies show that such development produces little, if any, extra traffic.

She also noted that the fire department reviewed the concerns about access to the neighborhood in emergency instances and found that the street system would still support access and would not significantly increase congestion in the case of evacuation.&nbsp;

The matter will go before the City Council during Tuesday's meeting starting at 9 a.m. at the City Council chambers.

Commission to discuss new phone service 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson City Manager Jeff Cantrell announced that, after an extensive search, Izzy Rivera has been named the city’s new building official.&nbsp;

Under the general direction of the city manager, Rivera is primarily responsible for managing the city’s building code compliance and inspection program. He will oversee the residential and commercial building permit process; manage the work of city code inspectors; and interpret and explain related laws, ordinances and code provisions to stakeholders.&nbsp;

In addition, he will serve as primary liaison to the Building Trades Board. Rivera comes to the city with more than 30 years of experience related to construction and building codes, including 15 as a public employee working in inspection and code enforcement.&nbsp;

For the last eight years, he has served as the Director of Building Safety for the city of Amarillo, Texas, where he also served as the Vice President of the International Code Council.

Rivera named new City Building Official

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Tony Schleich, President and General Manager of American Packaging, says Wednesday’s <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/9ab06fa2-ae84-4096-a366-4d0397527802">announcement about an expansion</a> of the South Hutchinson facility was long overdue.

The company announced that it will expand the current 60,000-square-foot building to the north by another 100,000 square feet. The estimated $10 million expansion will allow for new equipment and additional employees. Schleich says they have simply run out of room.

“We are completely out of space, from both the manufacturing point and our warehouse,” Schleich said. “That coupled with an opportunity to plug in a new high-speed piece of equipment, it facilitated the need to expand.”&nbsp;

Schleich says plans ran into an unexpected snag with a small parcel of land on the west side of their property, but the city of South Hutchinson accommodated them.

“There’s an easement between our building and the rails-to-trails property that the city owned,” Schleich said. “The city of South Hutch said, 'It’s yours,' and that granted us the access we absolutely needed in order to get back to that north side.”

Schleich says he is working with local and state officials to get some financial relief for the project with the help of the Chamber of Commerce and the state.

“The Reno County Chamber has been phenomenal to work with, the Department of Commerce . . . has been outstanding to work with,” Schleich said.&nbsp;

The expansion will result in more jobs for the company, which currently employs 43 people. Schleich says he hopes to add 10 jobs into the company by the end of next year.

“On the short end, we’re going to go five year one and probably an additional five towards the end of year one,” Schleich said. “As we continue to add business . . . we will need the additional employees to accommodate the additional business.”

Work is expected to begin in the coming week or two with completion set for July or August of 2021.

As of Thursday, there were 455 active cases of the pandemic with 449 in the community. The number of active cases has dropped by more than 1,000 since it peaked at 1,513 Nov. 29. The number of active cases has fallen by 135 since Christmas. It is not known if that trend will go up after the holidays or not. Just after Thanksgiving there was a moderate increase in cases.

There have been 6,496 positive cases with 5,908 recoveries. There have been 20,452 tests administered with an overall positive test rate of 26.8%.

Death toll climbs by 2; number of active cases falling

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department continues to work in conjunction with the medical collaborative in vaccinating all Phase 1 Front Line Health Care Personnel.&nbsp;

Reno County received 1,900 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and distributed that to major health care facilities within Reno County for vaccinating their own staff. In addition, the Reno County Health Department has also contacted other Reno County health care personnel including EMS, optometrists, dentists, chiropractors, pharmacists and home health agencies.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Leavenworth County man was arrested after a high-speed chase through Reno and McPherson counties.

The Reno County Sheriff's Department says 31-year-old Justin Walker of Basehor fled from authorities after being stopped at 108th and K-61 Highway.&nbsp;

Walker fled from the stop into McPherson County at speeds of over 100 miles per hour.

McPherson police officers attempted to stop the fleeing subject’s vehicle by using stop sticks to deflate the tires just outside the McPherson city limits.&nbsp;

Walker eventually drove through a dead end where the vehicle became stuck in a field. He was captured without incident after a short foot chase and booked into the Reno County Correctional Facility on suspicion of felony flee and elude, possession of stolen property, criminal possession of a firearm, along with drug possession and drug distribution.

No injuries resulted from the pursuit.&nbsp;

The Reno County Sheriff’s Office says Michelle Birkle fled from officers as they attempted to make a traffic stop.&nbsp;

The chase went down K-96 at speeds in excess of 100 mph where the Kansas Highway Patrol took over the chase. Birkle was eventually stopped at K-96 and the Ridge Road exit near Maize.

The agency says that January is Pit Bull Month. If you have a dog in the bull terrier family that needs to be spayed or neutered, now is the time.&nbsp;

Cause for Paws will sponsor the surgery and it will cost the pet owner just $10. Owners of pit bulls who want to have their pets spayed or neutered can make appointments now.&nbsp;

Cause for Paws event runs through January

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — All eyes are on the legislative session for the Kansas State Fair as the organization looks to support two possible pieces of legislation that would support the fair.&nbsp;

The first is to open the fairgrounds to alcohol consumption during the fair and not have it confined to certain areas. The legislation would also allow the fair to collect at least a portion of the sales tax generated from alcohol sales.

The second would allow the fair to sue its capital outlay funds to help pay for daily operations in the short term. Interim GM Ed Berger says both proposals have been provided to area legislators.

“We’ve provided that information to them, so they’re aware of it,” Berger said. “They’ve had a chance to review it and, if they have any questions, certainly they’ll be getting back I’m sure.”

Berger says the response from those legislators has, for the most part, been positive, but added that the fair board wants the use of the funds to be optional.

“I think our fair board wants these two pieces of legislation permissive,” Berger said. “It doesn’t mean they’re going to do either one but it gives the option duly to the fair board to do those kinds of things.”

The use of the capital funds must be approved since they are generated by collection of sales tax. That was part of a bill passed by the state two years ago with the funds to be used only for facility repairs and construction. Berger says such a move would only be temporary.

“That capital improvement fund is so important. It would only be a dire circumstance that we would dip into that at all,” Berger stressed. “When you lose 90 percent of your revenue, and we’ve had a hit to our revenue, so that’s only in case we need it, but we want to keep that capital improvement fund.”

If both pieces of legislation were to make it through the upcoming session, plans would be to use the capital improvement funds through 2022.

Interim GM Ed Berger says both proposals have been provided to area legislators.“We’ve provided that information to them, so they’re aware of it,” Berger said. “They’ve had a chance to review it and, if they have any questions, certainly they’ll be getting back I’m sure.”Berger says the response from those legislators has, for the most part, been positive, but added that the fair board wants the use of the funds to be optional.“I think our fair board wants these two pieces of legislation permissive,” Berger said. “It doesn’t mean they’re going to do either one but it gives the option duly to the fair board to do those kinds of things.”The use of the capital funds must be approved since they are generated by collection of sales tax. That was part of a bill passed by the state two years ago with the funds to be used only for facility repairs and construction. Berger says such a move would only be temporary.“That capital improvement fund is so important. It would only be a dire circumstance that we would dip into that at all,” Berger stressed. “When you lose 90 percent of your revenue, and we’ve had a hit to our revenue, so that’s only in case we need it, but we want to keep that capital improvement fund.”If both pieces of legislation were to make it through the upcoming session, plans would be to use the capital improvement funds through 2022.
