HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Most of us will make New Year’s resolutions, everything from doing better at our job to the proverbial promise to get more exercise.&nbsp;

The past year has been filled with stress and anxiety in dealing with the pandemic. Beth Akins with Horizons Mental Health Center says that this year's resolution may need to be more mental than physical.

“So maybe it’s learning some mindfulness techniques or some relation techniques,” Akins said. “Or, instead of exercising to lose weight maybe it’s exercising to reduce anxiety.”

Still, choosing exercise as part of your resolution can be beneficial emotionally and not just physically.

“Oftentimes we set that New Year’s resolution . . . 'I’m going to exercise because I’m going to lose 50 pounds,'” Akins said. “But maybe this year it could be, 'I’m going to exercise because I want my overall health to be better.'”

If you break that resolution, and most do within 10 days, don’t sweat it and try again.

“It’s only a failure if you fail to try,” Akins said. “Give it a try and, if you don’t like it, that’s fine, but at least you’ve given it a try and that’s a good thing.”

Akins stresses that making a resolution often means breaking certain habits and that those don't come easy.

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A South Hutchinson business is making a major expansion. American Packaging Corporation, a division of Lawrence Paper Company, announced a 100,000-square-foot expansion to its current facility.&nbsp;

“This project represents the results of the hard work and dedication of our employees and their contribution to our business,” Tony Schleich, President/General Manager of American Packaging, said. “Since merging with Lawrence Paper Company in January of 2012, we have taken advantage of their many resources to facilitate our growth. The culmination is the substantial investment in people, equipment, and facilities to solidify our continued success while maintaining the agility to meet our customers’ needs.”

Schleich continued, “None of this would have been possible, however, without the cooperation of the City of South Hutchinson and we cannot thank them enough.”&nbsp;

American Packaging currently employs 43 people in South Hutchinson and expects to add additional jobs over the next three to five years.

“We’re proud to work with and support American Packaging Corporation in this exciting expansion plan,” Kansas Department of Commerce Secretary David Toland said. “American Packaging made the right choice by investing in its facility in South Hutchinson as they grow their operations here in Kansas and expand their packaging and distribution business.”

The class will run Jan. 7 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Those interested can reserve a spot by calling 620-694-2900. Ask for Michelle or Jeanette. The cost is $20 for the class and is offered for adults only.

Health Department to offer child care orientation course

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Regional Medical Center continues to administer COVID vaccinations to its medical staff.

In an update provided by the hospital, 500 frontline workers have received their first shots of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. The second shots should be administered between the 6th and 8th of January.

The update also says that the Health Department, Hutch Clinic and Hutch Regional are continuing to discuss the larger community immunization plan while standing ready to assist the commercial pharmacies in immunizing patients and staff at long-term care facilities, nursing homes and other higher-risk group home settings.

The hospital also said that the number of hospital staff out of work because of the pandemic is falling. At last count there were 15 staff members out with COVID. At one time the number was more than 40. The hospital currently has 20 COVID patients out of the 74 total patients in its care.

Hutch Rec also announced that the Sports Arena will open for walking again starting Jan. 4. The deadline for signing up for youth competitive basketball is also Jan. 4.

Chambers will step down after serving 20 years on the bench. Before that he was the Reno County District Attorney and County Attorney. He also served in a private practice before that. He is a 1977 graduate of Washburn University School of Law.

Because of the pandemic, no reception can be held for Chambers, but he will be available Jan. 7 in the division two courtroom. If you are masked and can practice proper social distancing, you can come to a small meet and greet at that time. If you have worked with Judge Chambers, know him in his non-legal life or even appeared before him and want to wish him well in his retirement, you can do so.&nbsp;

Judge Chambers to retire next month

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Gov. Kelly’s proposal to take away local control when it comes to dealing with the pandemic is getting attention from local leaders.&nbsp;

Reno County Administrator Randy Partington is not one who favors having local control taken away from the county, saying that the response to the pandemic is too different county to county.

“There’s completely different demographics and populations, space and distancing. Obviously all counties are not the same,” Partington said. “Some have very small populations in very large areas, Rush County and Wichita County versus Douglas, Johnson and Sedgwick County.”

Partington says it really comes down to knowing what’s best for the county.

“Local health officials and the local health department are closer to people,” Partington stressed. “So I think the board of health and the county health officer have the best understanding of what’s needed locally.”&nbsp;

Karen Hammersmith with the Reno County Health Department says she understands the desire for local control, but noted that her department is, for the most part, sticking with the guidelines set up by the CDC and the state.

“I’m not extremely concerned,” Hammersmith said. “Although I do know people . . . want local control, but we’re trying to just abide by all of the requests anyway.”

Partington says he’s not sure what options the county will have if the governor takes local control away from cities and counties.

“I’m not sure of opting out or what options we would have,” Partington said in dealing with the governor's actions. “I need to talk to our legal counsel and County Commission to see what they would want to do.”

So far, the governor has only talked about the measure. No action has been taken in Topeka.

In the past, a local law firm has offered free rides home for those who may have celebrated a little too much. However, Bretz &amp; Young says that, because of the pandemic, it will not provide rides home this year.&nbsp;

Hutchinson police officers say they are not in the Uber business, but do provide rides in certain situations.&nbsp;

The position has been vacant since Datjaeda Moore resigned after being suspended. Former Human Relations Commission Chair David Sotelo has taken the position in the interim.

Human Resources Director Tom Sanders says the opening has been posted for about a month and, so far, they have received approximately 10 applications. The position will be full time with a salary between $40,000 and $60,000 per year.

The posting says the position works under the supervision of the City Manager and is responsible for administering the Human Relations Ordinance pertaining to anti-discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodations. Implementing and facilitating various programs is required.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The employee should possess excellent communication, organizational and public relation skills; and demonstrate working knowledge and experience with multi-cultural competency.

The agency hopes to change that with the colder weather setting in. Under the program, income-eligible families receive a comprehensive home energy audit that is an assessment of the entire home. A certified energy auditor assesses each home for inefficiencies and safety concerns using advanced equipment and techniques.&nbsp;

The energy audit will identify areas for cost-effective improvements. Those improvements are then provided free of charge by a network of professional crews and contractors. SCKEDD normally receives $4 million per year, which is enough to do about 480 homes.

Normally, the waiting time for the program is 18 to 24 months, but right now an applicant can expect to be included in the program within 90 days.

If a household contains a member who receives Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits or utility assistance from the Low Income Energy Association Program (LIEAP), the household is automatically considered eligible for the program.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County area has now recorded 100 deaths from the pandemic.

The Reno County Health Department was notified through the Office of Vital Statistics Death Certificates of the new number. More than half (51) of the reported COVID-19 deaths have occurred in the county in the past 30 days.&nbsp;

As of Tuesday afternoon, there were 520 active cases of the pandemic with 513 in the community. There have been 6,470 positive cases with 5,850 recoveries.

There have been 20,302 tests administered with an overall positive test rate of 31.8%.

More than half (51) of the reported COVID-19 deaths have occurred in the county in the past 30 days.&nbsp;The information was delayed in being reported due to offices being closed for the Christmas holiday. Out of respect for the families, the Reno County Health Department will not release any further information about these individuals.&nbsp;As we continue into the New Year, we all must do our part to slow the spread of COVID-19. It will take each of us doing our part by continuing to be vigilant by washing hands, social distancing by six feet or more, wearing a mask when in public places and staying at home when not feeling well.&nbsp;It is very important that people continue to follow the guidelines to help decrease the spread of COVID-19 in the community.

Pandemic death toll reaches 100 in Reno Co.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Boys and Girls Club has been able to hand out free personal technology devices to low-income families. The club teamed up with IdeaTek of Buhler to provide more than 100 computers to those in need.

“Within days we were able to provide over 100 devices to Boys and Girls Club families. Some of these parents were in tears saying they didn’t have a Christmas present for their child before this opportunity,” Lance Patterson, Director of Operations, Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson, said.&nbsp; “Thank you to IdeaTek and the Kansas Department of Commerce for providing essential needs to families during this time.”

Boys and Girls Club works with hundreds of children and families throughout Hutchinson to develop character and leadership skills while promoting academic success and healthy lifestyles.

Community Foundation seeking volunteers for awards committee

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Clinic announced Monday it will reopen walk-in care services in South Hutchinson. The clinic is located at 24 S. Main St.&nbsp;

“The reopening of South Hutch Walk-In Care marks the next step in our efforts to put the community’s health first,” Mike Heck, CEO of Hutchinson Clinic, said. “With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we operated the location as an offsite lab, which gave us the opportunity to provide dedicated spaces for care to protect the health of our patients. We heard the need from our community to reinstate the much-needed urgent care services in the area and took the right steps to safely reopen the location in a thoughtful way.”

The clinic will be open for lab work at 7:30 a.m. and will take walk-in patients from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.&nbsp;

Hutchinson Clinic reopens South Hutchinson walk-in center

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Commissioners had a very short meeting on Tuesday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The board approved the resolution renewing the proclamation of the State of Local Disaster Emergency for the county. The matter was part of the consent agenda.

Commission extends emergency declaration order

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Work continues on two major bridge projects in the county. Reno County Public Works Director Don Brittain says that both the 43rd Avenue bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad and the Arkansas River Bridge on Nickerson Road are running at or ahead of schedule.

“They’re right on schedule,” Brittain said in regard to the 43rd Avenue project. “We’re driving pilings now for the abutments. There haven't been any surprises for that bridge.”

Brittain says the Nickerson Road bridge project is also moving along and could be finished ahead of schedule. That would mean the road opening by the summer of 2021.

As far as the 43rd Avenue project, Brittain is hopeful it could also open in 2021.

“The 43rd Avenue bridge was scheduled to be completed by February of 2022,” Brittain said. “Everything is going pretty good on that bridge.”&nbsp;

Brittain added that it could be as early as the fall of 2021 for the project's completion.&nbsp;

The total cost of the 43rd Avenue project is $3.7 million.&nbsp;

Ridership for the passenger rail carrier fell nearly 48% to just 16.8 million passengers. That compares with a record 32 million in 2019. Long-distance ridership fell by 39% and commuter ridership fell by 50%.

The Southwest Chief, which serves Kansas and Hutchinson, had total ridership in 2020 of 186,470, a drop of 43%. It was the largest decline in the long-distance network. The Chief saw 327,276 passengers in 2019.

Amtrak says that, at best, it will see ridership and revenue improve to about 37% of pre-COVID levels by the end of 2021.

The daily testing started Dec. 18. Since then, the testing site at the Cosmosphere parking lot has administered 439 tests. The state took over the testing in an effort to centralize the program and ease some of the workload on area health departments and clinics.

The South Hutchinson site at the Simply Good Overstocks parking lot has taken in 332 tests. The tests are free and you can take one whether you have symptoms or not. The testing site is closed Tuesday because of the weather.&nbsp;

Area testing sites are busy

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The active cases of COVID continue to decrease slowly in Reno County.

As of Monday afternoon, there were 539 active cases of the pandemic with 533 of them in the community. The death toll is at 94 with 45 in the past 30 days. The total case count is at 6,437.

More than 20,200 tests have been administered with 13,777 negatives and an overall positive test rate of 31.84%.&nbsp;

There are currently 25 patients in the hospital with 299 having been in the hospital since the pandemic started, 90 have been admitted to ICU.

COVID numbers declining in small amounts

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Animal Shelter is back open this Tuesday morning after closing for the Christmas holiday.&nbsp;

The shelter wanted to remind residents that for various reasons, including the current COVID-19 pandemic, the shelter is working with a reduced number of staff, all while trying to keep what staff is available safe and healthy, and continuing to care for the many animals already at the shelter.&nbsp;

Shelter officials want everyone to know the animals in their care are their priority and are still receiving the best care they can provide.&nbsp;

Because of reduced staffing levels, the shelter is not currently able to accommodate every animal matter that presents itself.&nbsp; The shelter said it is doing its best to give animals every chance to find a new home through scheduling adoption appointments.&nbsp;

Appointments are limited because of the reduced number of staff.&nbsp;

The shelter hopes to&nbsp; be able to accommodate more animals and open the doors to general walk-in traffic safely soon.&nbsp;

As before, the drop-off sites are located in the parking lot of the Salt City Splash and at the parking lot of the Rice Park shelter house.
