SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Public Works says the work on the 43rd Avenue bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad is largely complete.

"I plan to open the 43rd Avenue bridge to the public Wednesday morning," said Reno County Public Works director Don Brittain.

The official completion date for the 223 foot structure was originally late winter of 2022.

The desire by Union Pacific to keep the right-of-way available for a second track, soil erosion prevention and the bridge's close proximity to old K-61 highway drove up the cost of the small span to more than $3.7 million.
