Kan. — October is Car Care Month, which takes on a whole new meaning this year in the wake of the pandemic.

"We urge motorists to pay attention to those maintenance issues with their vehicles and make sure that they are ready for winter," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "Then, we throw in the fact that a lot of motorists are keeping their vehicles longer. According to IHS Markit, the average age of vehicles on U.S. roadways topped 12 years last year for the first time ever."

Previous AAA research shows that vehicles 10 years and older are twice as likely to end up stranded on the side of the road compared to newer vehicles and on top of that, the odds of needing a tow quadruples.

"Part of that right now is chip shortages limiting supply of new vehicles," Steward said. "I think everybody can see that when they drive by a car dealership these days. There's just such a small amount of inventory in stock. People are forced, in some cases, to keep their cars longer. Other people are doing that by choice."

More than a third of Americans forget or delay recommended maintenance, ultimately paying more for repairs when the vehicle does break down. 

"Make sure that the battery, tires, engine elements and then your fluids are the four key aspects that we suggest you look at," Steward said. 

Most of all, set an appointment with a mechanic you trust. A professional and thorough vehicle inspection can help reduce the chance of a serious breakdown, which is not only an inconvenience, but more costly than preventive maintenance.

This year's event will be a little different from years past.

Parents are still encouraged to bring their children in costume, but all attendees will stay in their vehicles as they receive goodie bags.

Drivers are asked to enter the alley behind the station at 825 N. Main from 9th and Washington. The drive-thru will run south, with drivers exiting on the 8th Avenue side of the station.

Pumpkinaries tonight: What you need to know

The Hutchinson Housing Commission will meet Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers Workroom at City Hall.

On the agenda is the regular housing dashboard report for September, a Featured Neighborhood Report from Adam Stewart and reports from Ryan Hvitløk on the Hutchinson Land Bank and the CDBG Grant for Creekside. The Creekside grant is a $256,000 grant with $25,000 utilized as of last month's meeting. Landlords would have a 25 percent match to utilize the funds. There are about 75 eligible homes in the target area. Homes need to be completed by January, 2022. With the contractor bid process and ordering supplies, the time limit is crucial. Any unused money has to be returned to the state.

Hvitløk will also have updated comments for the board on the different types of COVID relief aid, including the American Rescue Plan Act, Kansas Emergency Rental Assistance Program and the Kansas Homeowner Assistance Fund.

The discussion will also continue on the sidewalk repair program. The City Council has provided $20,000 for its portion of the program and many ideas have been floated as to how to get homeowners and property owners to cost share to make that money go farther.

As we celebrate the 150th birthday of Hutchinson and Reno County, we want to go through the years, decade by decade, to see how things have changed and — remarkably — how they have stayed the same. Many changes were a part of the 1960s, including a new home for Hutchinson High School, air passenger service in Hutchinson and the start of what is now one of the premier museums in the United States. That and more as we look back on the 1960s.

1960: Dillons Stores looks for an easier way for shoppers who need just a few things when it opens its first Kwik Shop. The partnership continues through 2018 when Kroger sold off the chain.&nbsp;

There are conflicting dates as to when this project was completed, but in 1961, the Farmers Commission grain elevator was in full operation. It is still the second-longest single-head house elevator in the world.

Sen. John F. Kennedy speaks at the Sports Arena.

Captain Kangaroo entertains a large crowd of children at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

A gas explosion rips through the community of Haven, destroying the Haven Journal and two other buildings.

Dillons expands with a new distribution center on the city's east side.

Air passenger service comes to Hutchinson as Central Airlines. Eventually, the airline becomes Frontier Airlines.

The Hutchinson Fire Department builds a new training tower in Sylvan Park.

High school students in Hutchinson have a new home as the new Hutchinson High School is built at 13th and Severance.

1961: The Hutchinson Planetarium is opened by Patty Carey in a chicken coop at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. Her love of space and the vision of others is now on full display at the Cosmosphere, which is now one of the premier space museums in the world. The museum is one of just two that has a spacecraft flown in all three Cold War programs: Mercury, Gemini and Apollo.

In an effort to preserve the history of Hutchinson and Reno County, the Reno County Historical Society was formed.

Although you still have to stand in line for some state and county business, it was in 1961 that the state began to mail out license plates to residents.

A military plane crashes in Reno County. Crews were able to parachute to safety.

Hutchinson taxpayers form the Taxpayers League to promote better government.

1962: Fairfield High School opened in Abbyville. Today it is located just north of the community of Langdon.

Softball-sized hail hammers the area, causing more than $6 million in damages. The total would be $55 million in 2021.

Although it is well within the city limits today, Union Valley residents fought against annexation by the city in 1962.

Construction of a dam begins in southern Reno County in what would eventually become Cheney Reservoir.

Former President Harry S. Truman speaks at the Sports Arena.

&nbsp;1963: Many great events have come and gone from Reno County, but many still stand today, including the Abbyville Frontier Days Rodeo, which started in 1963.

The first Reno County Museum opened in 1963. The museum was located in several rooms of the home of Goldie Maupin, who was president of the historical society at that time.

Consolidation of school districts continues as county districts are redrawn again.

IRS agents raid the Eagles Club and seize slot machines.

More than 48,000 residents receive the Sabin polio vaccine in an effort to eradicate infantile paralysis.

1964: Still entertaining today, the Hutchinson Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1964.

As consolidation of school districts continues, voters in Arlington approve the closing of Arlington High School.

The police department makes the decision to stop escorting funeral processions.&nbsp;

Dog owners are unhappy with the city’s new ordinance that requires all dogs to be in a fenced yard or on a leash.

As the Cold War escalates, Kansas State University advises the public about when it would be safe to exit a fallout shelter if the U.S. were attacked.

1965: Trinity High School is built at 17th and Lorraine.

After standing proud in Hutchinson for so many years, the Bisonte Hotel catches fire during demolition, bringing a quick end to the hotel's demise.&nbsp;

Flooding hits the town of Nickerson as residents are forced to use sandbags to protect property.

The Ultra Van powered by a Corvair engine and transaxle was designed by David Peterson in the early '60s. These units were produced in limited quantities by Ultra, Inc. of Hutchinson, Kansas, until June of 1970.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Hutchinson News was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1965.

After years of military service, the old naval base has new life as it becomes the Hutchinson Air Base Industrial Tract. Today it is still home to various industries, The Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center and a popular glider port.

Hutchinson Junior College is taken under the reins of the state. The college had been run as a division of the Hutchinson School District. The college and the high school still have a close working relationship today.

Unable to secure more space downtown, Sears builds the Sears Shopping Plaza at the corner of 1st and Adams.

The planetarium moves to the campus of Hutchinson Junior College, now the site of the Cosmosphere.

After four years of construction, Cheney Reservoir is finished.

1966: Local doctors were found to have blocked free chest X-rays for five years, citing opposition to government encroachment into the private practice of medicine.

A new innovation aids police in catching speeders as Hutchinson begins using radar.

In what was the driest year on record, Reno County received just a little more than 13 inches of rain for the year.

The Human Relations Commission was formed in 1966 at the urging of the NAACP.

Mildred Baughman becomes the first woman in the state of Kansas to hold the office of county commissioners. She went on to serve for 25 years.

A new thing called a "computer" kickstarts a business in Hutchinson called the Data Center Inc.

The Dillons Northgate Shopping Center is built at 30th and Plum.

1967: Unable to receive any help from Reno County tax dollars, the Reno County Museum moves to Haven.

People read her advice column for years, but in 1967, Ann Landers spoke in Hutchinson.

The year after six residents die in the Broadacres County Home, Reno County commissioners approve air conditioning for the facility.

The Daisy BB gun shooting championships are held at Gowans Stadium July 7-9.

Old brine wells erupt in South Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Haven postal carrier Homer Astle retires after carrying mail on the same route for 46 years.

A danger that still exists today, a large prairie fire consumes the northern part of Reno County.

1968: A runaway train leaves Hutchinson heading west. The train travels 78 miles before it is derailed in the small town of Kinsley.

Wheat continues to be the crop in Reno County with a record 11.4 million bushels harvested.

Reno County servicemen write home about the horrors of the Vietnam War as local casualties increase.&nbsp;

USD 312 patrons approve a $1 million bond issue to build a new high school.

A popular event still held each year in Nickerson, the first Klear Nearly Days event is held in 1968.

The Fair Housing Ordinance was passed by the city of Hutchinson, outlawing discrimination in housing.

The Hutchinson Community College debate team wins the national title.&nbsp;

Thousands of trees die from Dutch elm disease.

The reformatory supervisor resigns after months of controversy over financial irregularities and an investigation by the governor's panel.

1969: What might have been for Hutchinson, no one will ever know for sure, but the new interstate system route does not go through Hutchinson, instead taking a route to the east through Newton.

The Board of Trade diminishes use of the Wiley Building, eventually closing. When the Wiley Building was renovated, 2013 papers, maps and most everything that was a part of the board was still there.

New telephones allow Hutchinson residents to make their own long-distance phone calls.

Vietnam protesters march down Main Street and hold a rally in Sylvan Park.

In what was finally an end to consolidation in the county, the number of school districts is reduced to six. There were 88 in 1948.

"Ultimately, it's to honor and worship Christ, to have fellowship with other people and our financial goal is to raise $100,000 that one night, which seems like a high goal," Walker said. "I think it's possible, I think we can do it. We're having a complimentary dinner time. We're going to have our kids 1st grade through 12th grade doing a collective choir time. It's just going to be a great time of fellowship and worship and honoring Christ."

CCS Stewardship Dinner coming November 20

Kan. — Creighton University economist Ernie Goss expects action from the Federal Reserve soon.

"I think it's going to be probably November," Goss said. "Certainly, before the end of the first quarter of 2022 we are going to see the Federal Reserve pull back. That's pull back some of their stimulus. That doesn't mean they are stopping their stimulus, they are just going to put less money out there into long-term bonds."

Some long-term rates are already higher in anticipation of future action.

"The ten-year Treasury yield on U.S. Treasury bonds, that's almost to 1.7%," Goss said. "Historically, that's way below the historical average. Still, in these times, that's a bit higher than what we've seen in the past."

That will have an upward impact on consumer interest rates throughout 2022 and with continued supply chain issues, overall prices look to continue to rise. Also, people are not yet getting back in the workforce in large numbers.

"Despite the fact that we continue to grow, we're not growing jobs," Goss said. "We're not getting back those jobs we lost to the pandemic. It's an odd situation. The President's been speaking about it, but I'd have to say, some of what he's said is not exactly what I would agree with."

President Biden sees passing his human infrastructure plan as a key to long-term economic growth, but negotiations on the overall size of that bill are still ongoing.

Kan. — Despite the higher visibility of some school board races due to controversy over COVID response and what some may see as future threats in curriculum, from a fundamental standpoint, new school board members will walk in to a situation where the math problems may not change.

"It appears that the funding situation is relatively stable," said Mark Tallman with the Kansas Association of School Boards. "The system we're trying to have in place to do some things around looking at student learning, both measurements and supports are relatively stable, but that can change at any time and I guess that's the exciting thing about being part of this."

There are state issues that constrain local school board actions, to a point.

"By and large, how much money a district gets is determined by the state," Tallman said. "How we measure progress is often determined by the state. The framework of things like how you negotiate with teachers is an issue that will be coming up next spring for a lot of boards. Many new board members are not very familiar with this. It really is a balance between the powers you have that are very important, but also understanding the limits on those powers, that I think surprise many new board members."

In addition, because they are the appropriators, the legislature can pass bills to open or close the checkbook based on their political wants and needs and not those of a local district, but eventually, there is hope that local boards will be able to get back to some of the priorities they were working on before COVID challenged normal for a couple of years.

"We've had a lot of good achievements educationally," Tallman said. "We know that there are kids who still aren't getting to where we need to be and we know we're struggling with having people with the skills to do the things that we want done. Some of those efforts, I think, were really pushed out of the spotlight by the pandemic."

It's also still unknown exactly how much real learning loss there was as a result of COVID and what kinds of supports will even be possible to help patch that up, since schools are having just as hard a time hiring people as the rest of the economy.

Tallman: Funding stable, but balance key for new school board members

HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- Anwar Lewis came into Saturday's matchup with Dodge City (1-6) with two streaks intact: four straight games with 100-plus rushing yards and five straight games with a touchdown.

The Conquistadors held Lewis to just 29 rushing yards. He did get a touchdown late to extend that streak to six games.

Despite 29 yards from Lewis (seven in the first half), Hutchinson (4-3) went up 28-0 early behind a strong first quarter from Dylan Laible.

"It was great to see progress being made," coach Drew Dallas said. Despite the 20-7 victory last week at Highland, Dallas didn't see the improvement he saw Saturday in Dodge City.

Dallas credited the Conquistador defense for limiting Lewis.

Laible ended the first quarter with four touchdown passes on 7 of 9 throwing for 187 yards. He threw for 215 yards in the first half alone. The Conquistador defense came into the game giving up 215 passing yards on average per game.

Laible's first TD came from 11 yards out when he hit Cortez Braham in the corner of the end zone to cap a 5-play, 38-yard drive that took just 1:50 0ff the clock.

Laible then connected with Micah Woods on an intermediate throw that Woods turned into a 57-yard touchdown to put Hutchinson up 14-0 with less than seven minutes gone.

With 4:21 left in the first quarter, Laible found Braham again, this time from 15 yards away. Laible capped off his great first quarter of play with a 39-yard TD pass to Rykem Laney, who entered the contest with 49 receiving yards on the year.

Hutchinson had a comfortable 28-0 lead heading into the second quarter when Dodge City put together an 8-play, 64-yard drive. The Dragon defense, however, held the Conquistadors to a 28-yard field goal.

Dodge City struck again quickly when Willie Gaines broke free on an 80-yard punt return for six. His longest return of the year had been for 12 yards and Gaines averaged just 4.7 yards per return before the house call.

Hutchinson took a 28-10 lead into halftime.

Laible got his fifth passing touchdown of the day when he connected with Malik Benson for 81 yards. Benson finished the day with 187 receiving yards on five receptions.

Laible finished with 363 passing yards. He was 16 of 24 with five touchdowns.

Anwar Lewis started to hit a groove in the fourth quarter when he put together 20 strong yards on a drive he finished off with a 2-yard TD. Hutchinson went up 42-17 with 12:33 left and started substituting offensively.

Dodge City got a 9-yard touchdown run from Tyler Curtis to close out the third quarter. Curtis finished with 77 yards rushing on 18 carries.

C.J. Hall led the Conquistador rushing attack with 114 yards. Dodge City finished with 209 rushing yards, but only 83 passing yards.

Quarterback Rashad McKee went 13 for 22 for 83 yards. He was sacked twice and threw an interception at the goal line to Juwon Gaston.

Daisean Cash only completed one of his three passes, but it was for a touchdown to Marcello Bussey for 14 yards.

The sixth passing touchdown tied a program record for the Blue Dragons. It was the sixth time in history Hutchinson finished with six passing scores.

FINAL: Hutchinson 49 Dodge City 17

Hutchinson has next week off before conference playoffs in two weeks. The final week of the season will determine final standings for the playoff run. If Hutchinson can get a top-4 seed, the Dragons would host the opening-round game.

"We talked about building positive momentum," Dallas said, "and we definitely did that."

"We're excited (about) what we have to look forward to," Dallas said about the playoffs.

Micah Woods caught three passes for 76 yards and a touchdown.

Cortez Braham caught three passes, two for touchdowns, and finished with 60 yards.

Tim Byrd Jr. led the Dragon rushing attack with 34 yards.

On a beautiful day for special teams, Alfonso Deleon averaged 50.6 yards per punt. He had a better average on the day than Corry Wilhoit (44.6 yards per punt) -- the nation's leader.

Laible throws 5 TDs at Dodge City

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department will be offering free COVID-19 booster vaccinations starting Tuesday, Oct. 26, at the First United Methodist Church, 101  E. 1st Ave., across from the post office. 

Booster doses of Pfizer, Moderna and J&amp;J will be offered Monday through Friday by appointment. Flu vaccines, along with first or second doses of COVID vaccine for ages 12 and over, will also be administered at the clinic. The flu vaccine can be administered at the same time as the COVID vaccination. Booster doses of Pfizer, Moderna and J&amp;J will be offered Monday through Friday by appointment. Booster shot program begins Tuesday in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Stan Balman, a longtime TECH artist, was honored at the 2021 InterHab PowerUp! Conference in Wichita. Each year the agency honors recipients with artwork created by the persons served by InterHab members. The art is used to honor the award recipients each year. Stan’s original painting “Red Oldsmobile” was selected as a winner in the Art Category and was received by David McCabe.&nbsp;

The PowerUp! Conference is an annual conference designed to inspire, educate, and empower professionals who support persons with disabilities. The Art &amp; Awards Ceremony recognizes the personal and professional achievements of Kansans with disabilities and celebrates exceptional professionals from across the region who are committed to providing the best possible outcomes for the persons they serve.

TECH artist wins award

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Emmanuel Lutheran Church and Trinity United Methodist Church will host the next TEFAP commodity distribution on Sunday, Oct. 24, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the former Dillon Living Center, 1901 E. 23rd.&nbsp;

The program is for low-income people of all ages. Commodities are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no need to pre-register. You are not allowed to pick up boxes for anyone other than yourself. Please form a single line with your vehicles, making sure not to block driveways and intersections.

The TEFAP distributes about 300 boxes of food each month, helping an average of 900 residents.

TEFAP distribution is Sunday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The unemployment rate for Reno County fell by a full percentage point in September.

According to figures released by the Kansas Department of Labor, the jobless rate in Reno County fell to 3.5%. The unemployment rate in 2020 was 5.7%.

There were 1,057 county residents out of work in September compared with 1,326 in August. It is the second straight month the jobless rate has fallen after two straight months of increases over the summer.

The state jobless rate was 3.9%, up from 3.8% in August.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 School Board will continue discussion regarding the ongoing negotiations with its teachers when they meet on Monday.

The two sides are at an impasse and a mediator has been brought in to try and bring the two sides together on a new contract. The discussion will be held in executive session.&nbsp;

Also Monday, the board will discuss a COVID retention bonus for classified and administrative staff. If approved the funds would be paid out of the contingency funds reserve. The funds were set aside during the 2021-22 budget process.

And the board will go into a study session to discuss the district's goals and how they are moving along to meet them. Monday’s meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the USD 308 administration center at 1520 N. Plum.

On October 30, 2021 the Reno County Museum is hosting a late-night ghost hunt and live stream with the Wichita Paranormal Research Society. 

"The live stream part, that's a pretty new aspect," said Katie Broker with the museum. "We've done it the past couple of years. If you can't come and participate in person, feel free to join us online on social media. We're going to stream over several platforms, including Facebook and Youtube. You can help us in this ghost hunt. You will be able to see parts of the museum that we wouldn't normally show."

Because of those limited size spaces in the normally not public parts of the museum, you need to get your reservation in right away.

"It's starting to fill up pretty quickly as we get closer to the event," Broker said. "Our limit is 25 people in person, because of the space issues."

You must be 16 or older to attend, under 18 must have a parent or guardian, and tickets are $45.

Angela Frohlich Phipps told Hutch Post the new Da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system lets doctors be more precise in their cuts than they can be with their own hands.

"The physician is controlling the arms of the robot," Frohlich Phipps said. "They attach different instrumentation to it. It's the movements and manipulation of the provider from the console."

There are certain surgeries that lend themselves more readily to robotic work.

"Lap Nissens, resections, things of that nature," Frohlich Phipps said. "When we use the Xi, we have a greater reach, greater mobility and decreased blood loss and increased accuracy."

The Xi is a key to the hospital's long-term planning.

"We can do three procedures a day on the Xi, just because of the duration of set up and tear down," Frohlich Phipps said. "We are currently renovating a larger OR suite to house it, which will be its final destination."

The new system also has the ability to customize settings to each physician, as well.
