A garage fire Friday night was quickly put out by Hutchinson firefighters. 

Crews were called at 6:38 p.m. Friday to 320 W. 13th for the report of a structure fire.  When they got there, crews found a fire in a detached garage behind the residence. 

 Crews made a quick aggressive attack containing the fire to the garage.  The garage suffered extensive damage.  The occupants were not home at the time of the fire.  No firefighter injuries were reported throughout the incident.  The cause of the fire was determined to be related to a wood burning stove used to heat the garage. This is the second such fire in recent days in Hutchinson. 

Fire staff asked earlier this month that homeowners please get furnaces, wood stoves, and chimneys checked and cleaned for the winter.

Second detached shop/garage fire in less than a week in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The tremendous media effort to promote the relaunch of this year's Kansas State Fair following its one-year absence is being recognized.

The Kansas State Fair received an Award of Excellence in the Hall of Honor Communications contest for radio and video advertising during the International Association of Fairs and Expositions 2021 Virtual Awards Show on Nov. 18.

The radio and video spots were titled, "Making Memories at the Kansas State Fair," and were produced by the fair's advertising agency, BowerComm.

"The Kansas State Fair is honored to be recognized at the 2021 IAFE Convention for their marketing accomplishments! The Kansas State Fair Team works tirelessly to create a positive experience for everyone who attends events on the fairgrounds,” GM Bryan Schulz said. “These events create lifelong memories and friendships, and we are proud to be part of them.”&nbsp;

The Hall of Honor Communications contest received 530 entries. The 13 categories within the communication awards are divided into five divisions by fair attendance. After submission, entries are judged based upon predetermined criteria set forth by IAFE committees. Judges include industry professionals both within, and outside of, the IAFE membership.

Kansas State Fair wins media award

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson USD 308 School Board will meet on Monday with a fairly light agenda. As part of the continued tour of facilities, Monday’s meeting will be held at McCandless Elementary School.

The board will review an application for a new organization called Mini Sweet Treat. The organization at Wiley Elementary School will provide an avenue for students to sell packaged snacks and drinks. The Mini Sweet Treat organization is a leadership project that emerged from the school's redesign program.&nbsp;

Also Monday, the board will take action on a bid for a new HVAC unit for the CTEA at a cost of $25,234 and discuss several personnel matters.

Finally, the board will go into executive session and hear the usual reports. Monday’s meeting of the USD 308 School Board begins at 6 p.m. at McCandless Elementary School.&nbsp;

USD 308 School Board meets Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — A former inmate at a Kansas jail alleges in a federal lawsuit that deputies fired a flash grenade and nonlethal bullets at her while she was having a panic attack inside an isolation cell in 2019. 

The lawsuit was filed last month by an attorney for 25-year-old Realiti Courson. It also alleges that deputies targeted her because she is Black. And it alleges that the Reno County sheriff’s department persuaded the local prosecutor to charge Courson with three felonies after her attorney contacted the department about the incident. 

The defendants are former Sheriff Randy Henderson; Shawn McClay, a captain at the jail; jail deputies Jake Harrison, Cody Blake and Kaitlynn Hazell; and the Reno County Commission.

UPDATE AS OF 4:25 P.M. Fire crews continue to make good progress on this afternoons fire that started about two miles southwest of the naval air base. The fire was first reported near the intersection of K-14 and Arlington Rd. and move quickly north and northeast. Still no word on any injuries or damage in the area.&nbsp; Crews continue to be released back into service at this time.

UPDATE AS OF 3:30 P.M.&nbsp;&nbsp;Fire crews appear to be getting the upper hand on the fire. Some of the crews are being released from the fire at this time. So far no reports of any damage or injuries from the fire. Crews from all over Reno Co. as well as crews Sedgwick Co. are working the fire along with a crew from the Kansas Forest Service.

The fire started near K-14 and Arlington Road and is burning to the east and northeast. Areas along Castleton Road are also involved.

No word on any damage or injuries at this time. Winds are out of the west at 25 with gusts to 40 mph.

Haven USD 312 says buses will run where they can. If buses cannot take a particular route, parents will be notified on a case-by-case basis on making contact with their students.&nbsp;

Grass fire southwest of Yoder keeps crews busy Friday

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/73582900-28b1-443e-a18f-b8333187dc72">The Reno County Sheriff’s Department released the name of the victim in Thursday night's fatality accident in South Hutchinson</a>.

The SO identified the victim as 35-year-old Travis Thrash of South Hutchinson. According to reports, law enforcement officials believe Thrash was traveling on Blanchard near Broadacres around 10 p.m. when his vehicle left the road and became airborne before hitting the southeast side of a building on property belonging to Mid-America Redi-Mix. Thrash was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

It appears as though Thrash was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Name released in fatality accident

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man who was arrested just before Thanksgiving has been formally charged.

Antoine Alexander is charged with numerous counts of drug possession and distribution, along with aggravated domestic battery. Alexander was arrested Nov. 24 following a disturbance.

He’s being held on a bond of $200,000. His case goes to the status docket where a preliminary hearing will be set in the future.

Formal charges brought in drug case

Kan. — Old Glory that the blind can see will be dedicated here in Hutchinson on Sunday. There will be a dedication on Sunday of a national monument to blind veterans and other blind Americans, a tactile American flag.

"We're inviting the whole public to come out," said Dennis Romero with the Kansas Braille Transcription Institute. "We've got in contact with the VFW and the American Legion here in Hutchinson and they are coming out to support us in this. It's a 2 p.m. quick dedication in your city of this Braille American flag."

Randolph Cabral, a Hutchinson native, created the flag back in 2005 for his father a war blinded WWII veteran.

"My mother approached me one day and said, you know, you've been working with the blind all of these years, why didn't you give your father a flag that he could still see?" Cabral said. "My father always posted the American flag on the front porch. I looked everywhere and could not find one anywhere in the United States or in the world for that matter. Trying to be a dutiful son, I created one."

Then Congressman Todd Tiahrt found out about the flag and was able, with the help of then Senator Sam Brownback, to get it posted at Arlington National Cemetery in 2008.

"I thought it only befitting that now that these monuments have actually been reproduced and placed in numerous places around the United States, this is where its home actually is, this is where it originated and this is where it certainly should be."

The monument will be at Avenue A Park facing Avenue A Street. The public is encouraged to attend.

Tactile Braille American flag to be dedicated Sunday in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After declaring that a protest petition filed to stop the building of an aggregate storage depot near Nickerson was valid, the Reno County Commission will make a decision on a conditional use permit for the facility when it meets Tuesday.

The protest for the facility proposed by Mid-States Materials came after the planning commission recommended approval of the permit. The petition started the conversation as to whether the commission is made up of three members or five, and how that could affect the vote on the CUP. The issue is important because the CUP Mid-States is applying for needs a supermajority to pass.&nbsp;

The attorney for the protesters says the county commission is already made up of five members following the November election and to pass the CUP, the board would need four votes. Of course the board will not have five members until the 2022 election.&nbsp;

County Counselor Joe O’Sullivan argued that, since the board put expansion up for a vote and not the public, the commission is not obligated to fill the two vacant seats until a special or general election is held. If that’s the case, the CUP would have to pass on a 3-0 vote.&nbsp;

Tuesday's meeting of the Reno County Commission is at 9 a.m. at the Reno County Annex.

Commission to address aggregate depot

Kan. — Automatic vehicle location is important to reducing response times in both the police and fire departments in Hutchinson.

"At the police department, we've been using it for some time," said chief Jeff Hooper. "We have mapping through our CAD system, our dispatch system. We can track and dispatchers also can see where all the emergency apparatus are in the community and obviously, dispatch the closest available unit."

Fire chief Steve Beer gave a recent example.

"We had an example, engine seven up on 30th Street here last week was headed down to city garage for some maintenance," Beer said. "On the way down there and on the way back, they picked off three emergency responses and it wasn't even in their territory, for the most part."

When seconds count in emergency situations, both departments are trained to respond instantly.

"When we get the call from the dispatch center, the standard for us on an EMS call is 60 seconds," Beer said. "They have to be out the door and responding in their fire truck. On a fire call, it's a minute and twenty seconds."

Part of the purpose of building the new fire station farther north on Main is to have more apparatus up that direction to reduce response times.

A 35-year-old South Hutchinson man was killed in an accident Thursday night involving a single vehicle and the building at Mid-America Redi-Mix off of the intersection of Blanchard and Broadacres Road.

According to the Reno County Sheriff's Office, deputies were sent to the scene just after 10 p.m. The driver had been ejected from the vehicle. 

The vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole causing the vehicle to go airborne. Upon landing, the driver was ejected and the vehicle came to rest at the southwest corner of the building.

The driver appeared to be buckled up. The name of the driver has not been released at the request of the family. The accident is still under investigation.

The annual Stuff the Bus event for BrightHouse was a great success.

"We had $1071 in cash donations," said Sue Wray with BrightHouse. "That was more than last year. We had more than $595 in gift cards, also more than last year, the sponsorship money, it was $2,666 overall. So, a really successful event."

Sponsors this year included Eagle Media, Dynamic Electronics, Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, Sleep Shoppe and Furniture Gallery and Mattress Clearance Center, Allen Samuels CDJR and Hog Wild.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The number of deaths of Reno County residents increased from 2019 to 2020.

That’s according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s Bureau of Vital Statistics. While it is not a pleasant subject to cover, many do wonder how much of an impact the pandemic had on the number of people who lost their lives year-over-year.&nbsp;

In 2020, 868 county residents died compared with 746 in 2019. Of those, 94 were COVID related, 83 of those COVID deaths were over the age of 65, while 11 were aged 45-64. With a little over three weeks left until the end of the year, the county has seen 81 COVID deaths in 2021. Let it be known that 2019 saw the sixth-most deaths of Reno County residents in 20 years.

The number of COVID deaths was pale by comparison with other factors including heart disease, which claimed 157 lives, and cancer, which took another 129 loved ones. Still, COVID was the third-leading cause of death in 2020, according to the numbers.

Though no number is good, there was a drop in deaths due to suicide from 18 in 2019 to 13 last year, and the number of people who died from kidney disease fell from 24 in 2019 to just nine in 2020.

Number of Reno County deaths increased

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Tyson Foods announced it will donate 30,000 pounds of prepared chicken products during a special giveaway on Saturday in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

On Saturday between 9 a.m. and noon, residents can receive a donation of food from Tyson at the Uptown Hutch Mall. Those receiving assistance will be able to drive through to pick up their food.

Tyson officials say a single donation will amount to about 25 pounds of food. And for people who may be looking for a job, the company will also have personnel on-hand to answer any questions you may have about potential employment. Tyson recently raised its starting hourly wage at its two area plants from $15.20 per hour to $16.85.&nbsp;

The plants, which employ around 575 workers total, are looking for about 80 employees in both operations and maintenance at this time.

PARTRIDGE, Kan. — Reno County emergency units and authorities were called to the scene of an ultralight plane crash Thursday. The pilot escaped serious injury, though he was taken to the hospital to be checked out.

The KHP's report puts the time of the crash at 4:37 p.m.&nbsp;

According to that report, 43-year-old Scott M. Bontrager was&nbsp;westbound and going to land on Morgan Road when he did not see power lines and struck them.

The ultralight was down in a field approximately 60 yards southwest of the corner of Morgan Road and Partridge Road in rural Reno County.

Electric crews spent into the evening on scene to repair the downed power lines. The lines down caused the closure of Morgan Road east of Partridge until the repairs were complete.

Rural fire districts three and four were called out as well as EMS.

TEFAP distribution is Sunday

HAVEN, Kan. — Haven USD 312 will be looking for a new superintendent. Clark Wedel announced he is resigning from his current position. The matter will be a part of Monday’s&nbsp;USD 312 board meeting.

Wedel has been the superintendent of the Haven School District since 2015, coming to the district from Moundridge where he was the high school's principal.&nbsp;

“This is something I have been considering and mulling over for quite some time,” Wedel said. “Probably my biggest thought is that I’m retirement-age eligible through KPERS, so it’s something that I can do.”

Wedel says leaving a job is never easy and, while he is looking forward to some downtime, he says he probably won't sit still for too long.

“It will certainly be a challenge to walk away from this district,” Wedel said. “As I said to the board, this has probably been as rewarding as a professional job I’ve had in my career.”

Wedel came on board shortly after USD 312 residents passed a major bond issue. He says good management by the district and a supporting board allowed the district to make a number of improvements.

“We took that bond election and put it into place and that allowed us to do a huge amount of updates,” Wedel said. “When you have bond money, it allows you to pad your capital outlay budget a bit and we were able to do that.”

Wedel says that the other improvements came thanks to a school board that was thinking of improving a number of facilities.&nbsp;

“When you have a school board that supports that, that makes it all possible,” Wedel said. “It’s been great to work with a school board that I would say we think a lot alike, and so we’ve been able to make a great number of updates.”

Wedel was also faced with a shrinking school district, which forced some tough decisions that included closing Mt. Hope Elementary School and the elementary school in Partridge.&nbsp;

A special meeting will be held on Tuesday with the Kansas Association of School Boards to discuss what direction the district will go to find Wedel's replacement.&nbsp;

Wedel’s last day with USD 312 will be June 30.

Interviews are coming up Friday for the County Counselor's position in Reno County. Two finalists will be interviewed.

According to Reno County Administrator Randy Partington, it is a priority for the county to get someone in that position as soon as possible, as Joe O'Sullivan plans to retire at the end of the year.

O'Sullivan has been willing to help in the transition, but it is Partington's intent to get a recommendation, if one occurs, on the agenda before the end of the year.

The county also needs to fill the County Appraiser's position. Those three finalists will be interviewed December 17.

Interviews for county positions happening this month

Kan. — City Council member Jade Piros de Carvalho asked Tuesday about the temporary traffic light at 30th and Lucille now that the 43rd bridge is open on the other side of Prairie Hills Middle School.

"Are we going to keep it, are we going to get rid of it, are we going to upgrade it to a permanent structure?" Piros de Carvalho asked. "I'm hearing loud and clear that the residents want it gone. I have not had conversations with the school. I just wanted to open a conversation about that."

Jeff Peterson, director of engineering, hasn't had a chance to do the research to know where to go next yet, but they plan to.

"We've had it in the budget to put it as a permanent signal at some point," Peterson said. "There's quite a bit of cost for that. Going forward, what my hope is to do is do some traffic counts. I wanted to, once the bridge got open. I know that during school time is really when the benefit comes, because of all the bus access in and out and holding traffic back. What it is now, I don't know that I have a good feel for that at this point."

Peterson knows what he thinks about it, but he wants the numbers before making any change.

"Probably in January, I would start some of those traffic study portions," Peterson said. "I would suspect that it doesn't really meet warrants for a traffic signal there, honestly. But, I'm saying that out of turn, without having the information to back me up."

The high power lines there would make putting in a permanent signal a challenge, if it turned out that the traffic counts justified it.

Traffic study planned for 30th and Lucille early next year

Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel notes that there is still a workforce supply problem in Reno County, as unemployment is back to pre-pandemic lows at 3.5%.

"We have just over 29,000 people actively working," Teufel said. "Of those total unemployed, they actually processed unemployment insurance claims for that prior week of 110 people."

Reno County is in the middle of the road, but unemployment is relatively low throughout the region.

"Sedgwick County's unemployment rate is the highest in the region," Teufel said. "It's at 4.9%. Our neighbors, you're going to see anything from 2.5% on up to that 4% number. We're kind of right in the middle. We have employers trying to hire in a time when unemployment is relatively low, in fact very low."

Though the number often lags a little, Teufel believes that is forcing wages up.

"Pressure on wages is what happens when you have a demand that is outpacing the supply," Teufel said. "Median wages are rising. That data always lags just a little bit, too. I had an employer reach out to us last week and they wanted to get some primary data about some of their competitors or peers in the region and that data is hard to get, unless, you know, you just do polling. The median wage in Reno County is just above $16 an hour. I think when the numbers come out next year, it's going to be at $17 an hour. That number has inched up about $1 every year in recent years."

The hope is that the wage increases result in more discretionary income to be spent in the community.

Teufel: Workforce supply issues continue

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson USD 308 Superintendent Mike Folks says that the number of students needing tutoring is up slightly this year. Folks recently gathered information from the district's schools.

Folks says, despite the lack of face-to-face class time last year, students are still doing pretty well in school.

“Last year with remote and hybrid learning our numbers were down,” Folks said. “Numbers this year for tutoring across the district are more normal of a typical year or up a little bit.”

One area where Folks is seeing some cause for concern is students' ability to re-engage teachers and others in the classroom due to remote learning.

“I heard a common theme and teachers were sharing that kids are having a hard time being engaged in their learning coming off remote and hybrid learning and all of the pivots,” Folks said. “And even if they are physically there, their attention span is a little bit shorter, so there is some concern.”

Last year, USD 308 provided extra services to students who may have fallen behind due to the changes in learning. Folks says they plan to offer that again this year.

“We’re monitoring the academic progress of our students and we hope we can get them all caught up,” Folks said. “We had summer school last year and we had a number of kids that took advantage of that. We are going to have summer school again this coming summer and we hope that our numbers double.”

All USD 308 schools offer tutoring programs for students that include full-time and para instructors. The district also uses a tutoring program through Boys and Girls Club.

USD 308 seeing uptick in tutoring services

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees will go over a number of bids for various projects when it meets on Thursday.

The first is for a truck driving simulator from L3Harris at a cost of $98,400. The simulator is part of the new truck driving courses at the college. The simulator is being paid for with a grant.

Also, the board will be asked to approve a bid from Lampton Welding for equipment at a cost of $100,203; new communication equipment from Weis Fire and Safety for the fire science department for $25,170; and an upgraded lighting and sound system for the Stringer Fine Arts Center. The bid for the lighting from Kent AV totals $108,475 and the bid for the sound system comes from Peach Production Services for $107,390.

Also Thursday, the board will go over two new positions for the college. One is for a new Director of Enrollment and Advising Services. The other is for Coordinator of Advising and Career Development.

The board will hear the usually reports and go over the personnel report.&nbsp;

Thursday’s meeting of the HutchCC Board of Trustees begins at 7 p.m. at the Shears Technology Center.

With a presence in 19 Kansas counties, the acquisition will enhance IdeaTek’s already robust and growing fixed wireless and fiber network while providing exciting opportunities for new and existing internet customers. 

The acquisition only includes Starr’s wireless internet services. All other services will remain with Starr. Starr Computer Solutions will continue to provide customers with the same quality products and services as they have in the past.

In the coming months, IdeaTek will begin an extensive upgrade of Starr’s wireless towers and infrastructure — which will bring faster, more reliable service to rural homes, businesses, educational facilities and enterprises. 

The acquisition adds to IdeaTek’s wireless internet expansion into Ford County earlier this month, with two new tower locations constructed on the north and south ends of Dodge City. It also furthers the company’s mission of providing internet freedom for Kansas communities, said Daniel Friesen, IdeaTek’s Co-Founder and Chief Innovation Officer.

“We believe all Kansans should have affordable and reliable internet access no matter where they live,” he said. “We will begin working immediately to upgrade and expand the Starr network so that customers will be able to access lightning-fast internet in 2022.”

IdeaTek’s wireless product, AirLight, delivers speeds of up to 150 Mbps. It was developed as a solution for remote areas. However, IdeaTek’s ultimate goal is to connect every home in Kansas with high-speed, affordable fiber-optic internet.

Investment in fiber is a scalable solution for Kansas’ future growth, Friesen said. “Our mission is to build to the standards of the future, not today.”

Based in Buhler, IdeaTek was founded by Friesen and four high school friends in 1999. Today, the company employs over 120 Kansans and is continuing to grow. The team is dedicated to the mission of connecting underserved communities with affordable high-speed internet. 

To date, IdeaTek has deployed more than 3,600 miles of fiber — plus built more than 100 fixed wireless towers — serving customers in over 50 Kansas communities.

Kan. — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for a portion of the city of Kingman and for Kingman County Rural Water District No. 1 water supply system. This advisory affects Kingman County Rural Water District No. 1 and city of Kingman customers located south of East 8th&nbsp;Street and east of Main Street. The advisory is in effect because of a loss of water pressure due to a major water main break.

Customers should observe the following precautions until fu­rther notice:

The advisory will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved.&nbsp;

A bicyclist was hit by a vehicle in the 1300 block of North Hendricks Wednesday morning while delivering papers just after 6:30 a.m. 

According to official reports, 52-year-old Danny Ray Ehrenbold was taken to Hutchinson Regional to be checked out, but he was not believed to be seriously hurt.
