HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Fire crews are preparing for what could be a difficult day on Tuesday. A combination of dry weather and strong winds has increased the grassland fire danger level into the extreme category. Hutchinson Fire Chief Steve Beer says they are preparing equipment for anything that comes along.
“We just wrapped up this weekend from the Albright fire and so we have a few repairs that we have to do on some of the trucks,” Beer said, “getting our fleet back in shape for tomorrow (Tuesday).”
The fire department also did some mitigation burning Monday afternoon northeast of Hutchinson.
“We are burning off 69th along the Sand Hills State Park,” Beer said. “We haven't had a fire up there in four years so we just want to make sure we’re prepared for this dry weather.”
A fire weather watch is in effect for Tuesday where winds could gust above 40 miles per hour in central Kansas.
