One arrest was made Friday in an abundance of caution, as Hutchinson USD 308 addressed a photoshopped image on social media of a gun being pointed at a student. 

The student was quickly identified by school staff and the Hutchinson High School Resource Officer immediately started investigating and took the student into custody. 

This photo was meant to be a “joke”, however violence, especially school violence, will not be taken lightly. The student is facing a serious person felony. 

Schools across the country had extra security measures Friday due to a viral social media trend that gave vague threats to schools on December 17.&nbsp; 

If you become aware of any potential threat posted to social media or anywhere else, please notify your building administrator, law enforcement, or make a Suspicious Activity Report with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kbi.ks.gov/sar">http://www.kbi.ks.gov/sar</a>. Kan. —&nbsp;Reno County District Attorney Tom Stanton let Hutch Post know that the annual Toys for Tots drive through his office was a success again this year. 

"We filled 18 boxes of toys this year with a total count on our toys of 839 and additional monetary contributions," Stanton said Friday. "We also collected 14 blankets, four scarves, four hats, two hat and gloves sets, and 20 sets of gloves."

The drive was a week long earlier in December and culminated with a drive through event December 11.

DA's toy event a success

RENO COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 6p.m. Friday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by&nbsp;Tompkins II, Nicolas V. Tompkins II, 45, Cookeville, TN., was southbound on Kansas 14 two miles south of Sterling at a high rate of speed. 

The car traveled left of center and the driver overcorrected. The vehicle entered the west ditch and struck an embankment.

EMS transported Tompkins to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Man hospitalized in Hutchinson after car strikes embankment

NICKERSON, Kan.— The Nickerson City Council will look over a proposal to hire a sexton for the city cemetery when they meet on Monday.

The city is looking to contract out for the sexton's services and have a request for proposal sent out.&nbsp;

Also Monday, the council will go over the sales tax revenues for the city and consider a request from Nickerson High School to contribute to the after prom celebration later in the school year, and go over a cereal malt beverage license for the Kwik Shop.

Monday’s meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Nickerson city offices at 15 N. Nickerson.&nbsp;

Nickerson City Council meets Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The parking lot at the Hutchinson Sports Arena is getting a bit of a facelift.

The Hutchinson City Council will consider having the two lots chip sealed during their meeting Tuesday. The low bid for the project is $234,732. The city had originally wanted to mill and overlay the parking lot but the asphalt is only three inches thick and is in too poor of shape for an overlay to last much longer than the current plan. The chip seal project also includes the seal, removing and replacing parking blocks and restriping. The work is expected to last about eight to ten years.&nbsp;

The other alternative and the one that was originally part of the arena renovation project would be to completely rebuild both parking lots at a cost of more than $2,500,000. That would provide parking at the arena for about 50 years.&nbsp;

Discussions with Hutchinson Community College showed a preference to go with the chip seal method. The college will reimburse the city for 25% of the cost. The work is expected to start after the basketball season.

Sports arena parking lot to get some renovation

LARNED, Kan. — A Hutchinson man entered a plea deal Thursday for a shooting and burglary in Pawnee County.

Fifth-three-year-old Bradley W. Hulse plead no contest to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, burglary of a dwelling, and reckless discharge of a firearm, according to Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett. 

Hulse had originally been charged with Attempted Murder.

The charges stem from shots fired at a vehicle during the early morning hours of July 31, 2021, in Larned. It was later determined that Hulse also broke into the intended victim’s home following the shots being fired with the intent to burn the home down. No one was injured in the incident. Hulse was arrested later that morning without incident in McPherson County by the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Following his entry of plea, Hulse expressed remorse and apologized to the court for his actions. Hulse noted he has never been in trouble with the law and stated he allowed his emotions to get the better of him that morning when he confirmed his suspicion of infidelity in his marriage, according to McNett.

Sentencing has been scheduled for January 20, 2022. The defendant is still in jail on a $50,000 bond.

"Delivery drivers will be needed at 4 p.m. Christmas Eve," said Sharon Surface with Hutchinson Secret Santa. "We are a grass-roots group made entirely of volunteers and operate solely on donations from the community."

They do not work through an agency. Hutchinson Secret Santa is the emergency resource for families in need in the Reno County area. They do cross-reference those who request with other agencies, though, so that all families get help. They provide wrapped, delivered (on Christmas eve) presents for children aged 0 to 18 for families that are unable to provide for their children and did not receive services from other agencies for those children.

The area around Hyde Park will be lit up with more than 14,000 luminaries along with other great Christmas decorations.

Boy Scouts Troop 101 and Rise Up Reno will be helping out with the set up around the park and providing cookies and cider during the evening. Horse drawn carriage rides will be available again this year, and as before Santa will be handing out candy canes at 20th and Washington.

RCAT will provide free bus rides through the neighborhood. The bus will pick up riders at the intersection of Main and Hyde Park. Motorists are asked not to park in the area of the Luminaries to preserve the beauty of the event.

Cars will be able to access the area on 20th Avenue one way westbound and 22nd Avenue one way eastbound.

All we could do was rely on smell.” Finkenbinder says the fire had burned about two miles by the time crews arrived on site before eventually growing 10 to 12 miles wide. More than 24 hours after the initial call, he was still monitoring smoldering bale piles and other hot spots for embers that could ignite new fires. State and local officials are still determining the impacts of these fires, though early reports suggest homes, outbuildings and livestock were lost in the flames. Farmers and ranchers impacted by the fires should contact their local U.S. Department of Agriculture service center for information on federal programs and services to help with disaster recovery.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Agricultural organizations collaborate to provide fire and storm relief

County Commissioner Ron Sellers will be part of the interviews today of the three finalists for the County Appraiser position.

"I like the way our county administrator, Randy Partington does interviews for director positions," Sellers said. "He usually has three groups interview the candidates. One is a group of Reno County employees, usually directors of departments. The second is kind of a group of people from the community, then he has a personal interview with that person. He gets input from three different areas on what might be the best candidate."

Sellers has been impressed with Partington's suggestions so far.

"Our Communications Specialist seems to be an excellent hire," Sellers said. "Our new personnel director/HR director is doing a very, very good job. This process seems to work for Randy."

Sellers believes that the role of commissioners is to advise and support the administrator when making these decisions.

"I hope that county government goes more and more in that direction," Sellers said. "We hire the county administrator to run the departments. Our role should be more in an advisory role. Thinking about the future, thinking about what is going well, thinking about what needs improvement, advising the county administrator. These department heads are really his decision, in the finality."

The hope is to have potential hires for both the county counselor and county appraiser positions on the commission agenda soon.

The unemployment rate for November was just 2.8%, down from 3.4% in October and from 4.3% in 2020. There were 836 county residents looking for work compared with 1,042 in October.

The jobless rate for the city of Hutchinson was an even 3% with 567 residents looking for work. The November unemployment rate for Kansas stood at 3.6%, down from 3.9% in October.

Unemployment rate falls below 3% in November

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Siemens Gamesa says they will reevaluate their work schedule at the Hutchinson nacelle facility after the Christmas holiday.

The facility has been under rolling furloughs since late October after continued supply chain issues limited parts coming into the facility. According to company spokesperson Myca Welch the company is still experiencing supply issues that may last into the new year.&nbsp;

The company had to furlough 200 workers in April of 2020 when the pandemic was putting a severe break in the supply chain from overseas. The furloughs were short-lived, and most workers were back at their jobs by the end of April.

The company had its employees working 50% of their weekly hours and then utilized the Kansas Shared Work Program which allowed employees to collect a portion of available unemployment benefits.&nbsp;

According to company spokesperson Myca Welch the company is still experiencing supply issues that may last into the new year.&nbsp;The company had to furlough 200 workers in April of 2020 when the pandemic was putting a severe break in the supply chain from overseas. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to the Evergy outage map, as of 5:45 a.m. Friday, there are still around 500 Reno County customers without power, including the area that has the broadcast tower for Country 102.9.

Also, Canton-Galva USD 419 in McPherson County is still out of school today, as outages continue in Canton. Entrance procedures have changed at Inman Jr/Sr High School due to a power pole near its parking lot entrance still needing repair.

There are still 50 plus outages in Salina, Abilene, Junction City, Manhattan and Topeka, as well.

Reno County still dealing with outages

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Building Official Izzy Rivera wants to remind everyone that as residents clean up and repair damage from last night’s storm, the city is here to help make sure it’s done right.

“After damaging weather like we had, there is often in influx of contractors from out of town looking for work in the wake of the storm,” Rivera said. “Before you hire someone to do the work on your home or business, just give us a call so we can help make sure they are licensed so that everything is done correctly and that you are not left with additional work or delays that might have been avoided.”&nbsp;

“By making sure all the correct permits are issued and all the work is up to code, you can save yourself a headache in the long run. “We don’t want to see anyone get taken advantage of,” Rivera said.

The City also announced that from now to the end of the month, permit fees will be waived for electrical work needed to reactivate service due to damage from last night’s storm.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual gingerbread house decorating event is set for this Saturday. 

Hutch Rec volunteer elves have been busy at work this week, constructing 1,200 gingerbread houses in preparation. This free community event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Memorial Hall.

Participants will enjoy decorating a gingerbread house and also have the opportunity to visit and take pictures with Santa. This annual event is Hutch Rec’s gift to the community, and is back in-person after it moved to a drive-through event in 2020 due to COVID-19.

Ginger Bread House Decorating is Saturday

Kan. — Area school districts have been in contact with law enforcement and will be extra vigilant with security procedures today, after a TikTok threat against schools more generally has ramped up the attention nationwide.

Administrative staff in the Hutchinson, Buhler and Nickerson-South Hutchinson school districts all put out messages to parents that were spreading on social media regarding the TikTok post about a threat to school safety for every school in the USA, even elementary, on Friday, December 17. McPherson schools also sent a message to parents Thursday, as well.

None of the districts are aware of any specific threats in their schools, but are asking parents to monitor students social media activity to be sure such trends don't continue to spread.

If you become aware of any potential threat posted to social media or anywhere else, please notify your building administrator, law enforcement, or make a Suspicious Activity Report with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation at <a href="http://www.kbi.ks.gov/sar">http://www.kbi.ks.gov/sar</a>. You may also anonymously report threats of school violence to the Kansas School Safety Hotline. The number is 877-626-8203.

Hutchinson City Manager Jeff Cantrell said he is assessing damage in the city this morning.

"By, I would say midday, we ought to know quite a bit more about how significant the damage was," Cantrell said. "We should have something posted by the end of the day."

Cantrell's first stop is the Landmark Building, as damage there has prompted closure of both the streets and sidewalks in its immediate area.

"We're going to assess that, too, to see if we have anything hanging off the building that would prevent the road from being open," Cantrell said. "If there is something hanging on it, we're going to need to address that, so that we can get the road opened back up as a priority. You'll probably see the sidewalk remain barricaded will be my guess."

Cantrell said by 11 a.m, the fire department will be finished cleaning up the panes of glass on the south side and on the top floor and once that work is complete, the streets surrounding the Landmark Building will reopen.

The maximum wind gust Wednesday measured at the Hutchinson Airport was 84 miles per hour.

UPDATE: City crews working after Wednesday winds in Hutchinson

Kansas U.S. Senator Dr. Roger Marshall put an amendment in the National Defense Authorization Act passed on Wednesday that keeps servicemembers from being dishonorably discharged for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine.

"As you may know, a dishonorable discharge is basically treating our heroes like felons," Marshall said. "It takes away your Second Amendment, your right to vote, it's really hard to get a job afterwards, you lose your VA benefits, including for housing and for loans, education, those types of things. We were able to tuck that in there, trying to protect soldiers."

Marshall is vaccinated, and he believes it is the right choice for some, but mandates aren't the right way to get people to do it.

"I support the vaccine," Marshall said. "I've had the vaccine. My parents have had their boosters. I don't believe in the mandate. I think that's the challenge here. I'm very concerned with this Omicron variant coming. I really encourage our senior citizens, people with underlying healthcare conditions, talk to your doctor about getting the booster."

Marshall sees the vaccine decision as a personal one.

"I believe in the sanctity of the doctor-patient relationship," Marshall said. "Everybody has a very unique health history. There's a religious side to this as well, too. I talked to multiple military folks who were declining it because of religious reasons."

The NDAA passed the U.S. Senate 88-11. It now goes to President Biden's desk.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Employees at the Reno County Landfill were spending the day Thursday with the monumental task of cleaning up debris and trash that was scattered all around the area on Wednesday.

While the landfill has catch fences for trash, the 80 mph winds were more than enough to scatter debris more than a mile north and east of the landfill. Plastic bags were hanging in trees and all through fields adjacent to the facility. Crews were working to bag up the trash by walking through the ditches. Landfill Director Megan Davidson says she has been with the landfill for 20 years and has never seen anything like what they are facing.

Davidson says they are getting help from public works who sent over nine workers and her entire staff is out helping with the clean up. Davidson says it could be a couple of weeks before they can finish the clean up.

Reno County Landfill working to clean up after storm

A live nativity is going on Thursday night at the Eagle Media Center at 9th and Main in Hutchinson with the help of Crossroads Christian Church.

"We have five sponsors this year, Bell Credit Union, Heartland Credit Union, Hutchinson Postal and Community Credit Union, Chem-Dry of Reno County and Preffered Roofing and Guttering," said Eagle Hutchinson Market Manager Nancy Swain. 

There will be live animals, including three camels, a calf, a donkey and several sheep.

"The event is from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.," Swain said. "We do the live scripture reading every 30 minutes, that will be at 6:00, 6:30, 7:00 and 7:30."

Spangles will be providing hot chocolate, and RCAT will provide transportation for seniors who want to see the live nativity and then go tour the city to see Christmas lights.

Reno County Emergency Management Director Adam Weishaar said Thursday afternoon there are lots of damage reports, but relative to what went through on Wednesday, most are not significant.

"A lot of roofs on outbuildings have been blown off," Weishaar said. "We have two structures that I am aware of that have significant damage due to large trees falling on them, and still some power lines down or power poles that are being worked on. There's a lot of power poles, but other than that, it's pretty minor damage."

Weishaar praised the first responders for getting to potential fire and damage scenes right away and limiting the storm's impact.

"They were jumping on calls as soon as they came out," Weishaar said. "That stopped a lot of the fire progression, what could have been some catastrophic loss, so we've got to give a lot of credit to those guys."

Given the widespread damage in parts of northwest Kansas, it is remarkable how well local folks worked together, and dispatch was amazing, as well.

"It was great," Weishaar said. "Everyone worked together as a team and that's what you've got to do. There was probably over 100 calls holding at one point in time and it's just methodical going through and making sure each one of those gets answered."

The highest Hutchinson wind gust was 84 miles per hour at the airport.

The city says residents will have until Sunday to pile up any tree limbs they want to get rid of. The city will come by and pick up those limbs then on Monday.&nbsp;

If you can’t get all of the debris cleared away you can call the city and make arrangements to have it picked up.

In Haven, all debris is the responsibility of the land owner. Power is on in the city and business for the most part are open.

It's the same in Buhler, where residents are asked to take their branches and limbs to the city compost site. While there is some damage in the community, power is on and for the most part things are up and running.

No word yet on what the city of Hutchinson will do as there is widespread damage to trees.

Widespread tree and limb damage all through Reno County

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department is operating as normal on Thursday, as their building did not lose power in Wednesday's strong winds. 

According to Karla Nichols with the Health Department, even if they had an electrical outage, the vaccine refrigerators are served by a backup generator.

The Health Department continues to administer vaccines during their normal operating hours. Appointments by phone are required for those ages 5 to 11, but adults can walk in. 

Call 620-694-2900 and select option 6 for scheduling. 

Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson &amp; Johnson COVID-19 vaccines are all available for initial doses. 

Also available are boosters for those for whom it has been six months since their initial two-shot series or two months since their single dose of Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine.

Health Department still vaccinating, did not lose power Wednesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson officials are looking over the damage from Wednesday's wind storm.

“We’re doing damage assessment through our windshield survey,” Hutchinson Fire Chief Steve Beer said. “We have fire trucks going up and down the streets looking for where power lines are down.”

The damage in the city wasn’t just to trees as many buildings suffered at least some damage.

“We have some homes that have blown off their foundations,” Beer said. “Some places lost their roofs, their canopies so we’re just going and trying to get a general assessment.”

Some areas of Hutchinson were hit harder than others but the overall damage to the city is area wide.

“It was sort of widespread across the city,” Beer said. “It wasn’t really located in one core area of the town, the damage and the wires down is spread through the entire city.”

Beer says that if residents are concerned about power to their homes they can call the fire department and they will come and inspect the power lines coming to your home.

“Check where the power comes into your home,” Beer said. “ The wires were starting to whip around a lot of times and that stuff (power lines) gets a little loose, and so we’re just looking to make sure the homes are safe.”

If you do not have power at your home but your neighbors do, there could be damage to your service line. The fire department will come out and look at your home if you have any questions regarding your electrical service. If it is a damaged service line, it will need to be repaired by an electrician and is not the responsibility of Evergy or your power provider.

Beer says that it will be a while before a full estimate of damage can be made.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson officials are looking over the damage from Wednesday's wind storm.“We’re doing damage assessment through our windshield survey,” Hutchinson Fire Chief Steve Beer said. “We have fire trucks going up and down the streets looking for where power lines are down.”The damage in the city wasn’t just to trees as many buildings suffered at least some damage.“We have some homes that have blown off their foundations,” Beer said. “Some places lost their roofs, their canopies so we’re just going and trying to get a general assessment.”Some areas of Hutchinson were hit harder than others but the overall damage to the city is area wide.“It was sort of widespread across the city,” Beer said. “It wasn’t really located in one core area of the town, the damage and the wires down is spread through the entire city.”Beer says that if residents are concerned about power to their homes they can call the fire department and they will come and inspect the power lines coming to your home.“Check where the power comes into your home,” Beer said. “ The wires were starting to whip around a lot of times and that stuff (power lines) gets a little loose, and so we’re just looking to make sure the homes are safe.”If you do not have power at your home but your neighbors do, there could be damage to your service line. The fire department will come out and look at your home if you have any questions regarding your electrical service. Widespread damage reported in Hutchinson from Wednesday's storm

Kan. — 
Power is almost fully restored to Ark Valley Electric customers after Wednesday's winds.

"We still have about forty three outages remaining," said Penny Wood with Ark Valley. "Our crews worked through most of the night to get everyone restored as best as possible, we're working to get those remaining ones taken care of right now." 

Wood said the utility has an estimated thirty-five broken poles.
