Bridal Fair set for Sunday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle campaign wrapped up on Christmas Eve and Maj. Paul James says that, while the mainstay of the holiday season proved fruitful in Reno County, there’s still time at the end of the year for donors to support the mission of Reno County’s largest, non-governmental provider of social services.

“The Christmas fundraising season is what sets the tone for the upcoming year,” James said. “So, every donation before the end of 2021 will mean more families we can help in the new year.”

Donors will also be able to benefit on their 2021 tax deductions with an eligible gift to The Salvation Army. The money raised will help families afford rent and mortgages, pay utility bills, and provide character-building programs for children in Reno County.

The Salvation Army community center will be open through Thursday for anyone wanting to drop off a donation at 700 N Walnut St. in Hutchinson. Donations can also be made online 24 hours a day at <a href="http://salarmy.us/HopeMarchesOnHutchinson">salarmy.us/HopeMarchesOnHutchinson</a>.

Salvation Army still taking year-end donations

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For years, Reno County has set aside funds for economic development. And most of those years, the funds were not entirely spent. Those leftover funds would go back to the general fund.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, the County Commission changed that with a pair of resolutions it hopes will give a little more flexibility during the budget period and keep that money ready when needed.

The $400,000 was used for incentives and other similar programs to attract new business or to help expand an existing company.&nbsp;

Under the resolution, the county will have an economic development reserve fund. Any money left over from the $400,000 line item would be transferred into the reserve fund. A second resolution allows the county to transfer those funds into the reserve fund instead of back into the general fund.

The hope is to keep the fund in place while allowing the county to hold back in future funding if the reserve is full and the budget is tight. It also allows the county to put more into the reserve fund if it is available.

The resolutions also brought up discussion regarding the county's 5-year comprehensive plan. Commissioners were in agreement that, while the plan looks good on paper, very little has been done to attain the goals outlined in the plan. The commissioners were in consensus that the plan needed to be looked over and there should be a discussion on how to either fix the plan or take action on the plan.&nbsp;

YODER, Kan. — Nitrate issues continue for the water supply around Yoder.&nbsp;

According to Public Works Director Don Brittain, the latest nitrate test for the Yoder Rural Water District 101 came in .7 mg per liter higher than what is allowed.&nbsp;

The issue first surfaced in August of 2020 when Reno County received a precautionary public notice for an acute nitrate violation from KDHE. A warning was then sent to Yoder residents to limit water usage, especially for infants under six months. A second notice was sent on Sept. 3, 2020, due to additional testing. A third precautionary public notice was sent on Oct. 27, 2020, requiring bottled water to be provided, upon request, to any household with members at increased risk from the nitrates, such as infants, nursing mothers, pregnant women, and other at-risk customers as identified by a health care provider.

At that time, Brittain said he was hoping to drill another well to escape the nitrate plum affecting the current well, but that has not been done at this time. Brittain says he is still in the process of resolving the issue and hopes to have it done as soon as possible.&nbsp;

Nitrate levels in water resources have increased in many areas due to applications of inorganic fertilizer and animal manure in agricultural areas.&nbsp;

High nitrate levels still in Yoder water supply

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department responded to 628 E. Ave. C&nbsp; for a structure fire around 4:15 Wednesday morning.

Upon arrival, crews found a detached garage fully involved in fire. The garage was occupied at the time of the fire and the occupant was able to escape the blaze with no injuries.&nbsp;

Crews began defensive fire operations on the involved structure and implemented measures to protect two adjacent homes that were being affected by radiant heat. Occupants of both residences were evacuated by fire personnel and had no injuries. Fire did extend into both residences but was extinguished quickly. All fire was brought under control in approximately 30 minutes.&nbsp;

Six adults who were the occupants of both adjacent homes were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross. Fire investigators on scene determined the cause of the fire was an improperly installed wood-burning stove in the detached garage.

HFD would like to remind everyone with the colder temperatures incoming that all wood-burning appliances be installed and maintained by professionals.

HFD works structure fire on East Ave. C

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — American Packaging in South Hutchinson has finished a major expansion project that started last year. Tony Schleich, president of American Packaging, says that, while the project took a little longer than expected, all is up and running.

“It did extend a little longer than we thought,” Schleich said. “We had a couple of weather setbacks and that kind of thing.”&nbsp;

Still, the new expansion, which was finished late in the summer, is paying off with increased production and better warehouse space. Schleich says it certainly has made a difference.

“We have a couple pieces of new equipment that dramatically increased our capacity,” Scheich said. “Not to mention the material handling, in the form of conveyors and some other material handling pieces.”

Schleich says the expansion has allowed the company to increase not only its mechanical footprint, but to make the facility more efficient. Schleich says he is still looking for about five employees to add to the current workforce of 60. The 100,000-square-foot expansion has also allowed the company to put all of its operations and shipping under one roof.

“It’s affording us an opportunity to move our finished goods and warehouse all under one roof,” Schleich said. “We’re going to retain our warehouse across the street to the south of us for some spillover square footage.”

The expansion added more than 100,000 square feet of space to what was an existing 45,000-square-foot facility. The cost of the expansion was around $7 million.

American Packaging benefitting from new expansion

ELLSWORTH, Kan. — A Reno County man was involved in a two-vehicle injury accident just before 1 p.m. Tuesday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a van driven by 46-year-old Joe Scott Markus of Partridge was southbound on Kansas 14.

After stopping at the stop sign at Kansas 156, the van pulled in front of a northeast-bound pickup driven by 37-year-old Candace Renae Rice of Salina. The pickup struck the van in the passenger side.

EMS transported Rice to Ellsworth County Medical Center. Markus was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Motorists who want to cut across east and west from Buhler to Nickerson are finding it a much longer trip than expected.&nbsp;

KDOT has closed 56th and 82nd avenues west of Hendricks due to the K-14 four-lane project. Those roads will be closed for almost a year.

Reno County Commissioner Daniel Friesen told Public Works Director Don Brittain that 56th is marked with a road closed sign but no directions on how to get around the work. It’s the same situation at 82nd, according to Friesen.&nbsp;

That, of course, brings up the question of the best way to get around the work. There may be a short detour. Motorists going west of 56th Avenue can turn south on Wilson and go to the K-14 interchange. The detour would be about three miles. The only other detour would take you from 56th and Hendricks south to 4th Avenue and then back to K-14 , a distance of 10 miles.

Brittain says he will look over the situation and discuss the signage with KDOT. Brittain says he may put up some signs to help with traffic in the work area if needed.

Detour for motorists between Nickerson and Buhler

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. — A member of the North Newton Police Department has died of complications from COVID-19.&nbsp;Brian Rousseau died Tuesday. He was 48. Rousseau had been with the North Newton Police Department since 2018.

“Brian was very dedicated to the profession. He was the kind of officer that if things went bad, you would want him beside you,” North Newton Police Chief Randy Jordan said. “He was a joy to be around in the office – a great sense of humor and a genuine love for life. We lost a terrific officer and a terrific person today.”

Prior to joining North Newton, Rousseau served a nearly 18-year tenure with the Newton Police Department. Rousseau also formerly served more than a decade on the Harvey County Emergency Response Team, including six years as a team leader.

“Brian was an exemplary employee, but more so than that, a wonderful person to be around,” North Newton City Administrator Kyle Fiedler said. “Serving the community was immensely important to Brian, and our community will miss him greatly.”

Rousseau, a Marion County resident, was born in Grand Junction, Colo. He leaves behind his wife and two children.

North Newton police officer dies from COVID complications

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County commissioners will allow the health department to use grant funds to implement a new electronic records system.

The department will use funds from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to put the system in place. The department decided on the system after going through several trials and then visiting the Butler County Health Department and the Cowley County Health Department, which have similar programs.

The health department says the new program will allow better accessibility of internet portals, do a better job of tracking inventory, speed up productivity and help with electronic claim processing to insurance providers.

The health department is currently utilizing Kansas Integrated Public Health System as its Practice Management system. The system does not have an Electronic Medical Record as part of its network. The new system is also cheaper than the current one. The annual cost for KIPHS is approximately $7,900. The proposed implementation costs for both CureMD and the changeover in data is projected to cost $5,344. After install, monthly costs are projected to be $548 for a projected annual cost of $6,576.

Commissioners expressed concern over whether a system that was expected to cost the county significantly more is suitable for what is needed. The health department says, after exploring all options, this was the best program.

Reno Co. Health Department to purchase new records system

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County commissioners did not take any action appointing a new County Counselor or new County Appraiser during Tuesday's agenda session.&nbsp;

None of the three executive sessions centered around filling the two vacancies. County Administrator Randy Partington could not say what the executive sessions were about, but did say they did not provide an avenue to make any appointments for either spot.

CHENEY, Kan. — The prolonged dry weather is starting to show its effects on Cheney Reservoir. As of Tuesday morning, the lake level at Cheney was 1,419 feet above sea level. That’s just over two feet below the normal pool level of 1,421 feet.

The water level had been steady at the top of the normal level most of the last year, but the dry conditions over the past two months have lowered the level. While the lake is more idle during the winter months, it still sees plenty of activity from winter fishing. The lower level is pulling water farther away from the boat ramps and docks around the marina area. It can also expose boaters to unexpected sandbars that are a part of the lake, especially near the shoreline.

During the drought of 2013, the lake fell to a record nine feet below normal. In August of 2019, the lake hit a record high of 1,430 feet above sea level.

Fox to host Hutchinson Symphony Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Zoo is looking for volunteers in the gift shop.&nbsp;

Volunteers will greet zoo visitors, provide information about the zoo, assist customers in the gift shop, help price merchandise and restock displays, operate the cash register, make change and bag purchases, as well as answer the gift shop phone.&nbsp;

Volunteers must have good communication skills, a pleasant personality, basic computer skills since the cash register is tied to the computer system, be able to count back change, be responsible, follow directions and handle responsibilities without continued close supervision.&nbsp;

Volunteers may sit during slow times. Volunteers are needed from 2 to 5 p.m. Mondays, noon to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, noon to 3 p.m. Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Shift times can be negotiated if needed. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — City officials and the union representing a large number of city service employees have met again to try to find some common ground on a new contract for 2022.

This comes after employees rejected the latest contract offer from the city. City Manager Jeff Cantrell says the two sides have met and some things were ironed out. No new meetings have been scheduled at this time.&nbsp;

Cantrell says he will have an update for the city council during the next meeting, which is set for Jan 4.

The contract covers about 125 city employees in everything from clerical, to Public Works and the Parks Department. The number represents about a quarter of the entire city workforce.

The city has already approved contracts with its police, fire, and 911 dispatchers.

Some movement in contract negotiations with city employees

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of South Hutchinson and the state continue to try to come up with a solution to treating wastewater in the city.

The city has been out of compliance with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for its wastewater discharge into the Arkansas River for many years. The water has too much salt content with a majority of that coming from the Tyson plant. Now the KDHE says it's time to do something about it.

“The state has finally come out and said it’s time to quit kicking the can down the street. It’s time for us to work out a plan to get into compliance with these requirements,” South Hutchinson City Manager Joe Turner said.&nbsp;

Turner says the action by the KDHE leaves just one option but two possibilities on how the water discharge problem is remedied. That means either Tyson will have to better treat its wastewater before sending it off to the city treatment plant or the city will have to come up with a way to better treat the water before it leaves its facility. Neither is a cheap fix.

“Tyson, I’m sure, is not ecstatic about it because a treatment option is going to be fairly expensive,” Turner said. “From the city’s perspective, we’ve done literally everything we can to try and accommodate and work with Tyson and the state to try and make this amenable as possible.”

Turner says the city has hired an engineering firm to come up with a plan for dealing with the wastewater. Once that plan is in place, the city and Tyson will have 28 months to come up with a solution to keep the wastewater at acceptable standards.

Chamber to host Community Outlook event

BUHLER, Kan. — The City of Buhler announced that Tuesday’s Buhler City Council meeting has been canceled.

The city determined that not enough council members would be present to have a quorum, so the meeting was canceled.

The next regular meeting of the Buhler City Council is set for Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m. at the Buhler city offices.

Buhler City Council meeting canceled

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Sales tax revenue jumped by more than $73,000 for the month of December when compared to the previous year.

According to figures released from the Reno County Treasurer's Office, December sales tax receipts totaled $473,821. The figure also surpasses $400,000 in tax receipts for the tenth time this year and easily surpassed last month's total of just under $414,000.

Sales tax figures reflect shopping trends for the month of October. The county ended up with a total of $5,154,010 in sales tax revenue compared with $4,811,360 in 2020.

Reno Co. sales tax revenue up for December

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department was kept busy with two structure fires Monday morning.

The first was called in around 5:26 a.m. as crews responded to 526 E. 2nd St. for the first structure fire. Upon arrival, crews found an unoccupied residential structure fully involved in fire. The fire was brought under control at approximately 6:45 a.m. and extensive overhaul measures took place due to a large amount of goods being stored in the unoccupied structure.&nbsp;

A resident of the structure to the east was displaced and is being assisted by the American Red Cross. The fire investigation is still open and ongoing at this time.

Then around 8:38 a.m., firefighters were called to the second fire at 110 Carlton Rd. First-arriving crews found heavy fire showing from the west side of the structure. Most of the fire was on the exterior of the home with some minor extension into the soffit of the roof and a utility room window. This fire was under control at 8:50 a.m.&nbsp;

Investigators on scene determined the fire had started due to discarded ashes from a fireplace into the trash bin. HFD wants to remind everyone to use caution as the temperatures begin to drop when discarding ashes. Discarding ashes into a non-combustible container with a lid is recommended.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The unions representing area law enforcement made Christmas a bit brighter for kids in the Reno County Youth Shelter. FOP Lodge #7 and #18 donated a combined $1,500 for the youth to spend on shoes, gifts and other needed items.&nbsp;

The shelter will also purchase bowling and movie tickets for the kids to enjoy over Christmas break. The FOP made the donation to the shelter last week.

Local FOP donates to county youth shelter

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The number of COVID cases continues to fall in Reno County. As of Monday morning, the number of current COVID cases stands at 396. That’s down from 419 cases on Dec. 21 and the 574 cases at this time last year.

The number of overall cases increased from 12,827 Dec. 21 to 12,934 as of Monday. With five days left in the year, there have been 6,396 cases of COVID in 2021. There were 6,538 cases at the end of 2020.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The number of COVID cases continues to fall in Reno County. As of Monday morning, the number of current COVID cases stands at 396. That’s down from 419 cases on Dec. 21 and the 574 cases at this time last year.The number of overall cases increased from 12,827 Dec. 21 to 12,934 as of Monday. With five days left in the year, there have been 6,396 cases of COVID in 2021. COVID cases still falling in Reno Co.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department welcomed a new officer and three other personnel to the force last week. Jesyka Boots was sworn in as a new officer. Boots was born and raised in Arizona. She is currently attending Northern Arizona University where she plans to graduate with a degree in Criminology and minor in Psychology and Anthropology.&nbsp;

Also new to the force is Animal Control Officer Patrick Murphy, Animal Shelter worker Hillary VanSchrag and Animal Shelter Technician Cameron Owens.
