Three-day weather outlook

Vehicle-deer crashes can happen any day of the year on Kansas roadways. Across the state, 39% of all single-vehicle crashes in 2024 involved a collision with a deer. The Kansas Department of Transportation reports five people were killed and 674 people were injured in collisions with deer in 2024.

These crashes greatly increase from now until the end of the year because of deer breeding season, with November typically the peak time.

This is why KDOT, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, AAA Kansas and the Kansas Turnpike Authority are joining to raise awareness and help decrease deer-vehicle crashes.

“Serious crashes are more likely to occur when drivers swerve to avoid a deer, as this can lead to loss of vehicle control, departure from the roadway or collisions with oncoming traffic,” said KHP Lieutenant Chad Crittenden. “It is often safer to brake firmly and stay in your lane.”

Shawn Steward, Public Affairs Manager for AAA Kansas, said that in addition to the inconvenience of your vehicle damage, the cost of repairs may put a serious dent in your wallet, especially if you don’t have comprehensive auto insurance coverage.

“AAA insurance statistics show the average claim in Kansas for an animal strike in 2024 was $8,430 – up 103% in just five years,” Steward said. “This is largely due to advanced vehicle technology such as cameras and sensors, driving up the cost of repairs.”

Anyone involved in a collision with a deer or other animal resulting in personal injury or property damage totaling $1,000 or more is required to immediately report the incident to the nearest law enforcement agency.

KDWP prioritizes reducing deer-vehicle collisions in managing the Kansas deer population. However, motorists should be prepared for a higher risk of collisions in the fall, said Levi Jaster, KDWP Big Game Program Coordinator.

“Even in areas with fewer deer, seasonal habitat changes and mating can bring deer onto roads at any time of day or night,” Jaster said. “Drivers should be especially cautious at dawn and dusk and stay attentive in areas with good deer habitat. Slowing down and remaining alert are the best ways to avoid a collision.”

Roadway safety officials suggest drivers: •&nbsp;&nbsp;Be watchful at dawn and dusk - deer are more active and they seldom travel alone. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Be alert and reduce speeds near wooded areas and near water sources. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Vehicle-deer collisions can happen on any rural or urban roadway – the signs show areas where high numbers have occurred in the past. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Do not swerve, this can cause motorists to veer into oncoming traffic, run off the road, hit objects or overturn. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Use bright headlights when there is no oncoming traffic – the deer’s eyes often reflect. •&nbsp;&nbsp;If possible, move the vehicle to the roadway’s shoulder after a collision and call law enforcement – KHP dispatch at *47, turnpike users at *KTA or local law enforcement at 911. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Put the vehicle’s hazard lights on and keep your seat belt fastened. •&nbsp;&nbsp;Contact your insurance company to report damage.

Only a few tickets remain for one of Reno County’s most anticipated fall fundraisers, Raise a Glass: Men’s Bourbon Tasting, set for Friday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m.

The event takes place at Hummingbird Aircraft — where guests will sample premium bourbons surrounded by aircraft, good company, and what organizers promise will be “an unforgettable atmosphere.”

The Hutchinson Zoo is gearing up for one of its most thrilling Halloween traditions — the Haunted Train — returning October 24th, 25th, and 26th from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $6 per person, with proceeds benefiting the Hutchinson Friends of the Zoo and the Hutchinson High School Thespian Club.

As the sun sets and the moon casts its eerie glow, the zoo transforms into a realm of fright and fun. Guests will board the Haunted Train for a spine-chilling ride through dark corners and spooky surprises — a perfect mix of Halloween spirit and community support.

Groups depart every 30 minutes, and attendees are asked to arrive at least five minutes before their scheduled ticket time. All tickets must be presented at the gate for entry, and late arrivals may not be accommodated. Tickets are non-refundable, and the event may be postponed or canceled due to rain, with weather decisions made by 3 p.m. on the day of the event.

Organizers caution that the Haunted Train is not recommended for children under age 5, and parental guidance is suggested for ages 5 to 9. All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

The Hutchinson Art Center will once again fill the community’s hearts—and bowls—during the 2025 Empty Bowls event on Thursday, Oct. 16th, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The event is part of a long-running international project where artists and volunteers create and sell handmade bowls to raise funds for local hunger relief. In Hutchinson, Empty Bowls is a collaborative effort between Hutchinson High School art students and faculty, the Hutchinson Community College Art Department, and the Hutchinson Art Center.

For a $15 donation (or $5 for children under 12), guests will receive a handcrafted ceramic bowl made by local students, along with a bowl of chili prepared by the Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy’s culinary class. Tickets will be available at the door, and all proceeds will go directly to the Reno County Food Bank.

Organizers say the event not only supports a vital community need but also highlights the power of art and education in service to others.

Empty Bowls is about bringing people together.&nbsp; It’s a way to show how creativity can make a real difference right here at home.

Empty Bowls event combines art, food, and community to fight hunger

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will begin a bridge replacement project on U.S. 56 in Rice County this week. This project was originally planned to start in September.

The project involves replacing a box culvert-style bridge located just south of the city of Chase, between 7th and 8th roads. The existing bridge has reached the end of its useful life and requires replacement.

The lead contractor for the $1.8 million project is Reece Construction of Salina. The project is anticipated to be completed by spring of 2026.

 Fire crews quickly contained a cooking fire late Sunday afternoon that caused heat and smoke damage to an apartment in the 600 block of West 14th Avenue.

According to Battalion Chief Chad Allen with the Hutchinson Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched around 4:30 p.m. after Hutchinson Police officers reported smoke visible from a commercial structure. Crews arrived to find an apartment door covered in soot and confirmed a working fire.

The apartment was unoccupied at the time of the call. Firefighters evacuated nearby residents as they worked to extinguish the blaze, which scorched walls and produced minor smoke damage in adjacent units.

Investigators determined the cause was accidental. No injuries were reported among residents or emergency responders.

The National Agricultural Hall of Fame will induct three individuals this fall whose work has significantly shaped American agriculture—antique tractor preservationist Michael Hinton of Hutchinson, former U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, and pork industry innovator Wendell Murphy. The ceremony will take place Oct. 23 at the National Agricultural Center in Bonner Springs.

Chartered by Congress in 1960, the Agricultural Hall of Fame honors those who have made outstanding national or international contributions to the advancement of agriculture. Previous inductees include such figures as Sen. Pat Roberts, Eli Whitney, George Washington Carver, and John Deere.

Hinton, known nationally for his dedication to preserving vintage tractors and the stories they carry, founded Antique Tractor Preservation Day and created TalkingTractors.com in 2024, a platform celebrating the heritage of rural life and agricultural innovation.

His efforts have earned multiple Kansas Governor Proclamations—in 2025, 2024, 2012, 2011, and 2010—along with two U.S. Congressional Record Statements and four USPS Pictorial Postmarks recognizing Antique Tractor Preservation Day.

Through his preservation and storytelling work, Hinton has brought global attention to the enduring spirit of American farmers. “It’s about storytelling, stewardship, and strengthening the bond between generations,” the Hall of Fame release noted. “He works to honor those who labored in the fields, advanced American farming, and embodied the values of hard work, innovation, and community.”

Also being honored is Sonny Perdue, who served as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture from 2017 to 2021. During his tenure, he established the first Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs to open global markets for American farmers, expanded food programs during the COVID-19 pandemic, and advanced rural broadband initiatives. Perdue now serves as chancellor of the University System of Georgia, overseeing agricultural research, education, and the creation of the 250-acre UGA Grand Farm research facility.

Wendell Murphy, of Rose Hill, North Carolina, transformed modern pork production. Through Murphy Farms, founded in 1962, he pioneered contract feeding systems, confinement technology, and genetics programs that revolutionized pork production nationwide. His innovations in nutrition, biosecurity, and efficiency remain industry standards.

The 2025 theme, “Cooperatives Build a Better World,” highlights how agricultural cooperatives continue to evolve to meet the needs of their farmer member-owners. Just as Kansas farmers adopt new technologies and management practices, agricultural cooperatives invest in infrastructure, leadership programs and services to help their members succeed.

“Local farmer-owners of Kansas cooperatives are the backbone of the Wheat State,” said Russell Plaschka, president and CEO of the Kansas Cooperative Council, the organization that has represented the cooperative business model in the Sunflower State since 1944. “When we talk about a circular economy, cooperatives exemplify this through the cooperative principle of concern for community. The majority of the dollars generated from wheat and other commodities typically stay local, supporting local economies and helping sustain our rural communities into the future.”

The Kansas Cooperative Council represents cooperatives across all sectors, including agriculture, finance, utilities, housing and more. The organization provides education, advocacy and public outreach to promote the cooperative business model and strengthen the network of member-owned organizations throughout Kansas.

Cooperatives play a vital role in Kansas communities, employing more than 5,000 people across 575 locations statewide and serving more than 100,000 members. Kansas is also home to three of the nation’s top 100 agricultural cooperatives, showing the state’s deep roots in collaboration and shared success.

Nationally, nearly one in three Americans are member-owners of a cooperative of some type, according to the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives. Wheat Scoop: October is National Co-op Month

NEWTON, Kan. — The Harvey County Treasurer’s Office will be closed to the public on Tuesday, Oct. 14, as the department transitions to new leadership.

Current Treasurer Becky Fields will complete her term on Monday, Oct. 13, concluding her service to the county. Amy Perkins, who was elected in the 2024 election, will officially begin her term as county treasurer the following day.

The one-day closure will allow time for administrative adjustments and the transfer of duties between the outgoing and incoming treasurer.

In addition, all Harvey County offices will be closed Monday, Oct. 13, for the county’s annual employee in-service day. All departments—except for the Treasurer’s Office—will reopen for regular business hours on Tuesday, Oct. 14.

The Treasurer’s Office will resume normal hours of operation on Wednesday, Oct. 15.

Residents are encouraged to plan ahead for vehicle registration renewals, property tax payments, and other in-person services that may be affected during the closure.

MARION COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before noon Saturday in Marion County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2023 International semi driven by&nbsp;Gurpreet Singh, 29, Greenwood, Indiana was eastbound on Highway 50 one half mile west of Banner Road.&nbsp; &nbsp;The semi struck a 2002 Ford pickup driven by Jeremy&nbsp;Bialek, 44, Florence, who was slowing and was attempting to make a left turn.

EMS transported&nbsp;Bialek to the hospital in Newton.&nbsp;&nbsp;Singh and a passenger in the semi were not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

McPherson fire crews responded to two grass fires and a vehicle fire Friday evening along I-135, as officials warn of increasing wildfire risks across the region.

According to the McPherson Fire Department, vegetation across central Kansas is beginning to dry out and go dormant — a seasonal shift that, combined with above-normal temperatures, creates conditions favorable for grassland fires.

“As we move into fall, we’re seeing the grass and vegetation drying up,” officials said in a statement. “That’s part of the recipe for increased fire danger. As winter approaches, lower humidity levels will make those risks even higher.”

Firefighters urge residents to use extreme caution when burning debris, discarding cigarettes, or operating equipment that may produce sparks or embers outdoors. Even small sparks can quickly ignite dry grass and spread rapidly under windy conditions.

Residents are reminded to monitor weather advisories and local burn restrictions before starting any outdoor fires.

Street Maintenance Work to Begin Monday in Sterling

TOPEKA, Kan.&nbsp;– The Kansas Bureau of Investigation shared the results of the statewide marijuana enforcement operation conducted in Kansas, between Oct. 1 and Oct. 2, according to a media release from the agency.

KBI agents, with support from local law enforcement, executed search warrants at 18 separate vape shops and CBD dispensaries in Wichita, Topeka, Salina, Great Bend, McPherson, Independence, Pratt, Abilene, Ulysses, Concordia and Sedan.

Marijuana products that are prohibited by Kansas law, or were suspected to contain unlawful amounts of THC, were seized. The preliminary results of items seized during the operation include:

Flower, also known as marijuana bud, (weight in ounces and pounds): 5,494 ounces or 343.38 pounds

THC pre-rolls, also called pre-rolled joints, (number of items): 43,867

THC and&nbsp;psilocybin&nbsp;edibles&nbsp;(number of packages): 84,481

Additionally, two subjects were arrested on Oct. 2, in Ulysses, for moving illegal THC products in order to evade law enforcement detection.

Gregory Reese, 63, of Ulysses, was arrested around 12:15 p.m., at N. Stubbs Road and E. Road 9 in rural Grant County. He was arrested for possession with the intent to distribute, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, interference with law enforcement, and no Kansas drug tax stamp.

Tammy Reese, 59, of Ulysses, was arrested for distribution of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, interference with law enforcement, criminal use of a weapon, and no Kansas drug tax stamp. She was arrested at Reese’s Enterprises at 119 W. Oklahoma, in Ulysses, at around 12:30 p.m.

Around 5 p.m., on Oct. 2, the Kansas Highway Patrol stopped a 20-foot box truck on U.S. Highway 400, near Fredonia. The truck was transporting THC products that were removed from the shelves of 19 Kansas shops. KBI agents seized the truck and its contents, and are investigating what occurred.&nbsp;

Evidence from these cases is being tested. The investigations are ongoing.

HUTCHINSON — The Hutchinson Community Foundation is taking aim at Reno County’s housing shortage with a new multi-year initiative, awarding its first $600,000 in grants to two local organizations at the forefront of housing development and support.

CEO Aubrey Abbott Patterson announced that Interfaith Housing &amp; Community Services will receive $450,000 and New Beginnings, Inc. will receive $150,000, both distributed over three years. The grants are part of a $1.5 million Housing Initiative Fund, created through donor contributions to strengthen the capacity of local nonprofits working to expand housing access.

“These are the first two grants we’re making out of that pool of money,” Patterson said. “We wanted to make sure Interfaith and New Beginnings have the staff and expertise they need to take on the projects this community is asking for. It’s about building sustainability so they can continue addressing the housing shortage long-term.”

Data-Driven Action on a Growing Challenge

According to a recent housing needs assessment commissioned by the City of Hutchinson, the area will need 1,100 new housing units over the next decade. The study also showed that 45% of renters in Hutchinson are cost-burdened, spending more than 30% of their income on housing.

“That kind of blows my mind,” Patterson said. “We know there’s a shortage, and people can’t afford what’s available. That’s why we have to take a strategic approach to add housing that works for every income level.”

Nonprofit Innovation and Infill Development

New Beginnings has already taken a lead role in developing small, affordable homes on infill lots within Hutchinson. The organization has partnered with local high school and college students in building trade programs to construct the homes — projects that also double as workforce training opportunities.

“These homes are energy-efficient and much more affordable to live in,” Patterson said. “Not only do they reduce upfront construction costs, but the tight building envelope means lower utility bills, which makes a big difference for renters.”

The city’s land bank program has made infill lots available at no cost to developers, and both Interfaith and New Beginnings are using these opportunities to reduce overall project expenses.

“When we build on lots where infrastructure already exists, it’s smart growth,” Patterson said. “It revitalizes neighborhoods and sparks reinvestment by surrounding homeowners.”

Building on Donor Trust and Community Momentum

Patterson credited local donors for stepping up quickly to launch the initiative, raising $1.5 million in just six weeks. Many contributions came through existing donor-advised funds or charitable IRA distributions.

“That kind of trust is powerful,” she said. “It’s what allows us to move fast when the community needs it.”

The housing initiative aligns with data and priorities from the city’s housing assessment, the Love Where You Live community empowerment plan, and the Reno County Economic Development Strategic Plan, all of which emphasize housing as key to retaining and attracting residents.

Looking Ahead: Low-Interest Loans and Housing Entrepreneurs

Beyond the initial grants, the Community Foundation plans to use its assets to offer low-interest loans to small-scale developers — people who want to build one or two homes but face upfront financial barriers.

“Maybe it’s a small developer who just wants to build one home on an infill lot,” Patterson explained. “We want to help them take that risk by offering lower-interest working capital loans.”

The foundation also plans to work with StartUp Hutch, Interfaith Housing, and Hutchinson Community College to support what Patterson called “housing entrepreneurs” — individuals or small businesses ready to tackle local housing needs in innovative ways.

Partnerships remain at the core of the foundation’s strategy. Patterson highlighted how organizations like New Beginnings integrate workforce training and job development into housing construction, creating a “win-win” for residents and students alike.

“We want students to stay here and build their careers here,” Patterson said. “By working together — education, nonprofits, donors, and the city — we’re creating opportunities for that to happen.”

Hutchinson Public Schools has announced its 2026 Kansas Teacher of the Year nominees — Amanda Buethe of Faris Elementary and Michelle Goossen of Hutchinson High School.

The Kansas Teacher of the Year program celebrates outstanding educators from across the state who demonstrate exceptional skill, dedication, and impact in their classrooms and communities. The annual program, sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education, promotes teaching excellence and highlights the essential role educators play in shaping the future of Kansas students.

Amanda Buethe: Celebrating Growth Beyond the Classroom A veteran educator with more than two decades of teaching experience, Amanda Buethe currently teaches second grade at Faris Elementary School. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Bethany College and a Master of Education from Wichita State University.

Buethe says her greatest joy comes from watching former students thrive long after they’ve left her classroom.

“I love celebrating their graduations, promotions, and even becoming parents—there’s nothing more rewarding than knowing you were a small part of their journey,” she said.

Buethe has taught in USD 308 for five years and has worked with students from second through twelfth grades. She holds endorsements in Elementary Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages, English Language Arts, and Family and Consumer Sciences.

Buethe credits the teamwork within her school for her continued enthusiasm. “My colleagues, support staff, custodians, behavior support team, and administrators keep me motivated to give my best every day,” Buethe said.

Her advice to new teachers is simple but heartfelt.&nbsp;“Give yourself grace; growth takes time, and every day is a chance to begin again. Focus on what’s best for kids and everything else will fall into place” she said.&nbsp;

Michelle Goossen: Connecting Students to Agriculture and Real Life At Hutchinson High School, Michelle Goossen brings agriculture to life through hands-on learning and real-world connections. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and a Master’s in Agriculture Education and Communications from Kansas State University.

Goossen teaches Agriculture Education and serves as both a CASE (Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education) Master Teacher and the organization’s Professional Development Coordinator.

“This allows me to work with teachers from all over the country to gain ideas and share knowledge,” she said.

For Goossen, teaching is about more than content—it’s about connection. “Even though students might not go into a career in agriculture, they are consumers of agriculture for the rest of their lives,” she explained.

She takes pride in helping students see how agricultural literacy shapes daily decisions, from food production to environmental sustainability.

Honoring Excellence in Education Both Buethe and Goossen will represent Hutchinson Public Schools in the Kansas Teacher of the Year regional selection process, where honorees are chosen for their commitment to students, innovation in teaching, and community involvement.

The Kansas Teacher of the Year program will culminate in the statewide awards ceremony later this school year, celebrating educators who exemplify the spirit of teaching excellence across Kansas.

Friday football forecast

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Sprint cars and stock cars will take center stage at the Nex-Tech Grandstand this weekend as SaltCity Racing wraps up its 2025 season with the ASCS Fairground Showdown on Friday and Saturday nights at the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

The two-night event will feature the ASCS National Sprint Car Tour along with Stock Car classes. Friday’s program pays $3,000 to win, while Saturday’s finale offers $5,000 to win in the 360 Sprint division.

“I can't believe we’re already talking about the last race of the year,” said SaltCity Racing founder Phil Nightingale. “It seems like we just got started. Time flies when you’re having fun.”

Nightingale said strong community support has helped the track grow each season.

“The support that Hutchinson and our sponsors have given to this racetrack has been huge,” he said. “You can see all the banners around the track, this whole town has rallied behind it. Each year gets a little better, and we’ve got some exciting plans for next year too.”

Both nights will feature the winged 360 sprint cars that made their Hutchinson return earlier this year.

“We’ve had the 305s quite a bit, but these 360s are a whole different animal,” Nightingale said. “They’re faster, they sound better, and when you’re sitting under that grandstand roof, it’s incredible.”

Friday’s schedule includes pits opening at 3 p.m., grandstands at 5 p.m., hot laps at 6:45, and racing at 7:30 p.m. Qualifiers from Friday will lock into Saturday’s main show.
On Saturday, pits open at noon, gates at 5 p.m., hot laps begin at 6:30, and racing starts at 7 p.m.

Nightingale credited his team, including Nic Baalman, Kyler Fetters, and volunteers from across Kansas, for helping maintain and operate the fairgrounds track.

“It’s not just me,” Nightingale said. “It’s a whole team of people who make this happen. If anyone ever wants to know what it’s like to run a racetrack, come talk to me — I could write a book about it.”

SaltCity Racing closes 2025 season with two-night Fairground Showdown

HUTCHINSON — Sixteen Reno County nonprofit organizations have been awarded a combined $179,319 through the Hutchinson Community Foundation’s second Fund for Reno County Impact Cycle of 2025.

With these latest awards, the foundation has distributed a total of $475,291 this year to 41 organizations addressing community needs throughout the county.

Established in 1990, the Fund for Reno County Endowment serves as a permanent, flexible resource for projects that meet evolving local priorities. Grants are awarded for innovative collaborations, efficiency improvements, critical needs, or opportunities that leverage additional community resources.

Funding for this cycle was enhanced by contributions through the foundation’s Giving Together program from donors Shirley Brandyberry, David and Patty Dick, Angel and Steve Dillon, Peg and John Stephens, and Merna B. Weeks.

Proposals are accepted twice each year, in February and August. The most recent Impact Cycle focused on Community and Economic Development and Strong Organizations initiatives.

Celebrating Community Impact Grantees were recognized during the foundation’s UPLIFT 2025 celebration Oct. 2 at the Reno County Farmers Market Pavilion, where nearly 80 guests gathered for live music by Jim French, local food and drink, and a program honoring this year’s grant recipients.

The evening also featured the annual Gift to Dream Grant, a $2,500 award presented in honor of the Hutch CF Legacy Society, which recognizes donors who have given $10,000 or more to an endowed fund or have made planned gifts. Hutch in Harmony received this year’s grant, selected by NAMI Reno County, the previous year’s recipient.

Attendees also heard brief “Changemaker Chats” spotlighting community progress from Donna Davis (Food Bank of Reno County), Tina Roelfs (City of Sylvia), Lacy Stauffacher (Interfaith Housing &amp; Community Services), and Lauren Storm (Greater Hutch).

Hutchinson’s Historic Fox Theatre – $28,301 for installation of a new boiler system.

Pretty Prairie Community Food Pantry Association – $25,000 toward construction of a new community space housing the pantry.
