The good news is we’ll have his veteran’s stipend and tuition assistance from my job to help pay for things. During all this, once we complete Baby Step 3, should we move on the Baby Step 4, or keep saving? &nbsp;

Dear Courtney,&nbsp; As long as you two are completely in agreement about this plan, and you’re willing to save like crazy for the next year and beyond, I think it makes sense.

But listen carefully to this next part. You’re going to have some unexpected things pop up along the way. That’s just how life works. I’m not trying to discourage you, but I want you to understand that even with your husband’s stipend, and help from your employer, you’ll have to stick to a budget and be smart with your money now more than ever before.&nbsp;

Later, once you complete Baby Step 3—which is having three to six months of expenses set aside as an emergency fund—Baby Step 4 is usually starting to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/retirement/the-truth-about-retirement">invest 15 percent of your income for retirement</a>. In your case, however, you’re not investing directly for retirement at that point. But you will be investing in your husband and your future together as a family. And it’s a great investment if he’s studying something that has practical marketplace application. Because that means you’re setting the stage to make back the money you put into his degree&nbsp;and&nbsp;have a bigger income for years into the future.&nbsp;

Again, as long as he’s not off taking stupid courses like left-handed puppetry or pursuing a Ph.D. in the history of German polka, you two are making a great investment for the future. Do everything you can to save and pile up money—that includes him doing something to bring in a little cash on weekends when he’s not in class—so you two can pay the bills, he can get through school and together, you can make this dream come true!&nbsp;

Dave Says:  Make sure the degree is practical and marketable

As Kansans brace for frigid temperatures this weekend, safety experts and local officials are urging residents to take precautions when heating their homes. With house fires spiking during the coldest months of the year, knowing how to safely use space heaters, fireplaces, and furnaces can be the difference between comfort and catastrophe.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires in the U.S., with space heaters responsible for the majority of incidents. The American Red Cross of South Central and Southeast Kansas reports that home fire responses are 30% higher during cold weather than during the rest of the year.

“Too often we see preventable tragedies happen when families try to stay warm,” said Shannon Wedge, Executive Director of the regional Red Cross. “Simple steps like keeping flammable items three feet away from heat sources and testing smoke alarms can save lives.”

To reduce the risk of fire, officials recommend these guidelines:

In addition to safe heating practices, it is recommended to test smoke alarms monthly and practice a two-minute home escape plan — the average amount of time a family may have to get out of a burning home.&nbsp;

Families who cannot afford smoke alarms or who are unable to install them can contact their local Red Cross office for help.

Home Fire Campaign Continues Saving Lives

Since 2014, the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign has partnered with communities nationwide to install free smoke alarms, create fire escape plans, and educate residents on fire safety. The campaign has been credited with saving over 2,500 lives so far.

“Preparing now can make all the difference,” Wedge said. “We encourage families to take action before the temperatures drop — your safety depends on it.”

Dillons honors military heroes on Veterans Day

Three-day weather outlook

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Moose Lodge will host its 19th annual veterans fundraiser this Saturday, Nov. 8, continuing a tradition started nearly two decades ago by local veteran John Miller to honor service members and support veterans’ causes.

The event begins at 11:30 a.m. with a donation-based turkey dinner at Moose Lodge #982, 1401 E. 1st Ave. There is a dance that starts at 7 p.m., and the main veterans recognition ceremony will take place at 9 p.m. Veterans are admitted free; Moose Lodge members will be charged $8 and non-members $10.

Miller, a member of the Moose Lodge, American Legion and American Legion Riders, launched the event after noticing Hutchinson lacked a full ceremony honoring veterans. 

“We have short ceremonies, maybe 15 or 20 minutes, maybe a breakfast, but not one that let veterans tell their stories and interact with the crowd,” he said. “I didn’t think it was fair to have Veterans Day without a veterans ceremony.”

Since then, the fundraiser has grown with support from the Moose Lodge, which provides the building and assistance. “They said, ‘We won’t charge you for the lodge and we’ll help you do everything we can,’ and it just blossomed from there,” Miller said. The lodge now even issues a special membership card for veterans.

Each year, proceeds benefit local veterans organizations, including the American Legion, AMVETS and both VFW posts. Additional funds are donated to a selected nonprofit. Past recipients include Healing Waters, which takes wounded veterans on fishing trips; Patriotic Adventures, which provides outdoor experiences for injured service members; and Wounded Warriors. This year’s chosen organization is KS for Vets, which helps local veterans with home modifications, utility assistance and support services. 

“They widen doors for wheelchairs, build ramps, help pay electric bills, whatever veterans need that they can’t afford,” Miller said.

Saturday’s ceremony will also honor Rachel, an O’Reilly Auto Parts employee whose son, an Army paratrooper, was severely injured when his parachute failed to deploy properly. 

“He’s been in the hospital for two years. He just learned to talk again about a month ago,” Miller said. 

Local veterans groups will present her with plaques, a Blue Star Family flag and a special throw blanket for her son.

Miller said the event also serves to remind the community of the unseen struggles many veterans face, including PTSD and mental health challenges. 

“It’s not always the broken bones you see—it’s what’s going on inside that can be worse,” he said. 

He highlighted the American Legion’s “Be the One” program, which encourages veterans to reach out to fellow veterans who may be struggling.

Businesses across Hutchinson continue to support the fundraiser, some for all 19 years, including Chafin Electric, Good Samaritan Funeral and Retirement Home, and B&amp;J Smoke Shop. New supporters this year include Hutch Auto Body.

Born on May 3, 2024, in the Czech Republic, K9 Strike underwent initial training through K9 Working Dogs International (K9WDI) before being recruited by the department this fall. He is partnered with Officer Ryan Aden, and together the duo has already completed their certification as a team in Rock Springs, Wyoming.

Strike is certified to detect a range of illegal narcotics, including PCP, LSD, psilocybin, methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and fentanyl. He brings a critical toolset to the department, especially as law enforcement agencies across the country face rising concerns over drug trafficking and opioid abuse.

In addition to his narcotics detection abilities, Strike is trained to identify ground disturbances—a valuable skill in search and rescue operations, including locating missing persons.

The department says Strike is already proving to be a valuable addition to its K9 team, enhancing both its patrol and investigative functions.

“Strike and Officer Aden have trained extensively together, and we’re confident they will make a strong impact in keeping our community safe,” the department said in a statement.

Hutch Police add new K-9 officer

With winter temperatures beginning to settle across the region, the Salvation Army of Hutchinson is stepping up to help families stay warm through its annual coat distribution, taking place this weekend at its main facility at 700 N. Walnut Street, behind Wendy’s off Main.

Thanks to a generous community partnership, hundreds of coats have been collected, cleaned, and prepared for distribution. Ineeda Cleaners led the charge with a successful coat drive and also donated their services to professionally clean every item—ensuring that each coat is ready for a new home.

“This kind of event is only possible because our community comes together to support one another,” said a Salvation Army representative. “We’re grateful to Ineeda Cleaners and everyone who donated.”

In addition to warm coats, Kansas Gas Service is providing free weatherization kits designed to help households improve energy efficiency and stay warm throughout the cold season.

The giveaway will take place over two days:

Following the weekend event, coats will continue to be distributed by appointment only. Local residents in need of winter clothing or weatherization supplies are encouraged to attend or contact the Salvation Army to schedule a time.

The Food Bank of Reno County and Eagle Media along with presenting sponsor Midwest Superstore are partnering on a “Stuff the Trucks” food drive today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dillons Marketplace on East Plaza Drive.&nbsp;

Volunteers will be collecting nonperishable items such as canned meats and vegetables, cereal, pasta, rice, peanut butter, and pancake mix. 

Kickstarted by a $2,500 donation by Dillons' stores and partner businesses including Friendly Bingo, Hog Wild Pit Barbecue, Pools Plus, and JACAM Catalyst who have already donated $500 toward the effort.

When asked, Angela Penner, the Executive Director of the Reno County, talked about those items always in need. “There's always a need for nonperishable items, so things like canned meats, vegetables, canned fruits, pancake mix, cereal, we're running very low on cereal right now, so that's a great thing, if you can add that, peanut butter and pastas, rice, all of that kind of pantry stable items. 

In addition to the ‘Stuff the Trucks” event, you can make a donation each time you head to Dillon’s Marketplace. Donation barrels are in place year-round at the Dillon’s Marketplace for those who wish to give.

HARVEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 3p.m. Thursday in Harvey County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Toyota 4Runner driven by&nbsp; Yamilena&nbsp;Zambrano Galue, 24, Wichita, was southbound on Interstate 135 one mile south of Lincoln Boulevard.&nbsp;The SUV struck a KDOT 2023 Freightliner 108SD driven by Charlene&nbsp;Harvey, 40,&nbsp; Newton, who was doing maintenance on the Interstate and was partially in the left lane.

EMS transported Zambrano to a Wichita hospital.&nbsp; The truck driver was not injured. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts, according to the KHP.

In the heart of our university lies a team that enables students to dream bigger, expect more, and achieve their educational aspirations: the Financial Aid Office. As the facilitators of access and affordability, these dedicated professionals navigate a complex landscape of federal regulations and ever-evolving technology. Their commitment goes beyond just numbers; it’s about creating opportunities for students who may otherwise encounter barriers to a college education.

Among these champions are three of the office’s most seasoned staff members—Chantelle Arnold, Robyn Hearne, and JoAnn Tomecek—who collectively boast 74 years of experience in financial aid. Their journeys illustrate resilience and an unwavering passion to serve students, with their close-knit team dynamics creating a supportive and collaborative work environment that extends across campus.

With 23 years of experience in financial aid and a degree in Communications, Robyn Hearne has formed a special bond with her colleagues. “I don’t have sisters. So, these people feel like my family,” she shared with heartfelt sincerity. What began as a role she never anticipated embracing has transformed into a fulfilling career that she describes as “addictive.” Each day on campus is a chance for Robyn to engage with students and provide them with the guidance they need to navigate the financial aid maze.

JoAnn Tomecek, a tenured veteran with 36 years’ experience and a degree in office administration, recognizes the responsibility that comes with their roles. “This is a good team. We’re here to serve the students,” she shared. The team’s mission is straightforward yet challenging: to ensure that each student receives their financial aid accurately and efficiently. They have tackled obstacles through a collaborative spirit, working to accelerate students towards their academic goals.

“Chantelle, Robyn, and I are all passionate about our jobs,” JoAnn continued. “We do all we can to understand the changes,” especially with evolving policies like federal FAFSA updates and new systems like Workday. Despite rapid changes in the financial aid landscape, JoAnn credited their adaptability and dedication to the success of their mission.

With her master’s degree in leadership, Chantelle Arnold emphasized the importance of student support systems, asserting their role as the final checkpoint before students embark on their college journey. The office has evolved significantly, streamlining communication methods and enhancing collaboration with other departments to make the financial aid process more integrated and efficient.

“Whether it be our immediate office family or our true families at home, students always come first,” Chantelle remarked. This strong sense of community fosters a healthy workplace environment where employee satisfaction translates to improved student service. The office also

mentors ten hardworking student employees who contribute to day-to-day functions, demonstrating that collaboration and teamwork are at the heart of their success.

Navigating federal regulations, changing demographics, and heightened technology demands is no small feat. “We just have to evolve with everything coming our way,” Robyn pointed out, acknowledging the need for continuous learning in their dynamic field. They face new challenges head-on, often digging “into the weeds of the regulations” to keep themselves and students well-informed about the financial aid landscape.

“We work well together,” Robyn summarized. “If there’s a problem, we talk about it, figure it out, and move on.” This proactive communication is vital to their collective success and, ultimately, to the students they serve.

Statistics do not just measure success in the Financial Aid Office, but also in the stories of perseverance that emerge from each cohort of graduates. The resilience and grace of Chantelle, Robyn, JoAnn, and their team underscore a truth that echoes across our university: financial aid is not just about funding education; it’s about forging pathways and nurturing dreams.

Stage 9 to honor veterans with free “Salute to the Troops” performance Saturday

Several lots of atorvastatin calcium tablets, a widely prescribed cholesterol-lowering drug, have been recalled due to concerns they may not dissolve properly in the body, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced.

The FDA said the affected batches failed “dissolution specifications,” meaning the pills may not break down at the appropriate rate once swallowed. If a medication dissolves too slowly or unevenly, the body may not absorb enough of it, potentially reducing its effectiveness — even when taken as directed.

The recall has been classified as a Class II recall, indicating the product may cause temporary or medically reversible health problems. The recalled atorvastatin calcium tablets — the generic equivalent of Lipitor — were manufactured by Alkem Laboratories, Ltd. in India and distributed by Ascend Laboratories, LLC of New Jersey.

Despite the recall, the FDA advises patients not to stop taking their medication without first speaking to their healthcare provider. Abruptly discontinuing statins like atorvastatin can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Hutch Post reached out to Ashcraft Pharmacy in South Hutchinson, and their advice is that if you have questions about the prescription to reach out to the pharmacy that filled it.&nbsp; They can tell if the medication is involved in the recall but reiterated not to stop the medication.&nbsp;

FDA announces recall of certain Atorvastatin tablets over dissolution concerns

Hutchinson, KS — In response to growing needs in the community, Heartland Credit Union has donated $5,000 to the Reno County Food Bank to help fight hunger and support families during the holiday season. The credit union is now encouraging its members to match that donation by contributing an additional $5,000 by December 31, with the goal of raising a total of $10,000 to support local residents.

The Reno County Food Bank provides emergency food assistance to approximately 13,000 residents each year, helping ensure that no one in the county has to face hunger alone. With the average cost of a meal in Kansas estimated at $3.42, Heartland’s initial donation could help provide over 1,400 meals. If the member challenge is met, nearly 3,000 meals could be served to those in need.

“Hunger is one of the 12 developmental issues identified by the National Credit Union Foundation as a barrier to financial well-being,” says Dan Springer, President and CEO of Heartland Credit Union. “It’s a challenge that can lead to a lack of education, which in turn limits opportunities to build savings and wealth. By supporting the Reno County Food Bank, we can help address one of the root causes of financial instability in the community.”

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the corner of North Main Street and Hyde Park Drive.

Grace Episcopal Church formed in Hutchinson in 1879.

In 1891, the membership built its first church at 303 E. 1st Ave. and Maple Street. The first photo shows the church that was used until 1951.

In 1941, an oil operator named Douglass started construction of a large stone and brick home at 2 Hyde Park Drive and Main Street. Work was halted on the structure due to domestic troubles with the late oil operator and his wife, and the structure stood abandoned until 1947.

That's when Grace Church bought the property and continued construction in 1949 to convert it to a church. The second photo shows the church in full-blown construction in 1951.

The third photo shows the completed church in late 1951.

The fourth photo shows the interior altar and pews at dedication.

The fifth photo is a color slide taken of the church in 1954, complete with the old Hyde Park bus stops that used to be along Main Street in the Hyde Park addition.

The sixth photo shows Grace Episcopal Church today, still going strong at 2 Hyde Park Drive with the Rev. Dr. J. Ted Blakely still the current rector.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Grace Episcopal Church - Vol. 147

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Fire crews responded Wednesday evening to a garage fire after a caller reported the smell of smoke, according to a release from the Hutchinson Fire Department.

Battalion Chief Justin Holzrichter said firefighters were dispatched at 6:44 p.m. to the 1100 block of East Eleventh Ave. for a possible structure fire. When crews arrived, they found smoke coming from the eaves of a detached garage.

Firefighters launched what Holzrichter described as an “aggressive fire attack” and were able to quickly bring the blaze under control. Crews remained at the scene afterward to overhaul the structure and collect equipment.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire has not yet been released.

The fire department expressed appreciation for assistance from Reno County EMS, the Hutchinson Police Department and the City of Hutchinson Public Works Department.

We are well past the midpoint of fall and closing in on winter. It is not an official thing but to me the defining point on the calendar between fall and winter is Thanksgiving. Generally, it is the time of the year when harvest is at least winding down, if not done, and the livestock are all in their wintering places.

I think Thanksgiving comes with extra meaning this year. It has been quite a year, especially for those of us in agriculture during the past 12 months. We have had a lot of, because of the lack of a better term, stuff going on in agriculture. Some of the stuff is good but a lot this stuff is not so rosy.

For many of us this has been a hard year with lots of challenges, and that is what makes Thanksgiving so important. No matter how bad things are, we still have a lot to be thankful for in the farming and ranching community.

We have, in my humble opinion, the best job anyone could have. Every morning, I am tasked with caring for God’s creation. We have been entrusted with the land, water and air, and it is our duty to protect them while raising the food and fiber a hungry planet needs.

We get to care for animals and watch as they are born and grow, and the cycle of life continues over and over on our watch. We plant seeds each spring and watch as they become a harvest of grain in the fall.

Yes, agriculture can be a tough way to make a living. Some days are better than others, but I cannot imagine doing anything else, and I am thankful to have the privilege for all this stuff. Many of us are on farms and ranches built by generations of hard work and others have built their operations from very little. The common denominator is we all have a passion for what we do.

It has always seemed right to me that Thanksgiving, the day we are thankful for the nation we live in and all that we have, is celebrated with a huge feast. Agriculture and a safe and abundant food supply is at the core of our nation’s success. It is what frees most of our workforce up to do all the other jobs that help us all prosper. Our food supply is what fuels our freedom and safety.

That is why I am so thankful to be just a small part of agriculture. I know some of the news is grim. There are outlooks that are not favorable, but those of us in agriculture know better times are on the horizon. That knowledge is what keeps us going in times like this.

We have almost a month until Thanksgiving, A month to reflect on all the blessings in our lives. A few weeks to remember why we love doing what we do. For a moment forget all the negative and focus on the good. Celebrate this great nation we live in and be thankful you have the opportunity to get up every morning and help feed and clothe your fellow citizens. We always have much to be thankful for and this Thanksgiving is no different.

Hutchinson, Ks — The USD 308 Board of Education and district leadership acknowledge the results of yesterday’s bond election, in which the proposed bond measure did not pass. According to unofficial results from the Reno County Election Office, of 4,936 votes cast,1,253 were in favor, with 3,683 against.

“We are grateful to everyone who took the time to vote and engage in this important community discussion,” said Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson. “While the outcome was not what we had hoped for, we respect the decision of our voters and remain committed to providing safe, effective, and supportive learning environments for all students.”

The proposed bond was intended to streamline entry to the district for all Pre-K students, build a single 6th through 8th grade middle school, and enhance safety and security in all elementary schools. Without the bond funding, district leaders will now evaluate next steps and identify alternative approaches to address school transitions, kindergarten readiness, and ongoing facility needs.

“Our needs do not go away with this result,” said Lance Patterson, Board President. “Our board will continue to listen, gather feedback, and work together with our staff and community to determine the most responsible path forward.”

The district will announce opportunities for community conversations and input sessions in the coming weeks.

USD 308 responds to bond election results

BUHLER, Kan. — As fall activities wind down and winter transitions begin, USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman says students, staff, and families are staying busy with a mix of accomplishments, challenges, and community-driven initiatives.

During a recent conversation with KWBW's Glenn Grunwald, Couchman highlighted the district’s success in athletics, the arts, and its commitment to supporting families during the ongoing federal government shutdown.

Sports and Activities: Buhler Spirit on display

Couchman celebrated the Buhler High School volleyball team’s impressive showing at the 4A State Tournament in Hutchinson, where 280 students traveled to cheer on the Crusaders.

“It’s been a while since the volleyball team has been to state, so we’re excited to see that program excel,” Couchman said. “I always say it's better to be at the state tournament and lose than sitting at home and watching.”

Other standout performances this fall include the school’s marching band, which placed first in the Blue Division and fourth overall at the Kansas Bandmasters Association competition — outperforming several larger districts.

On the cross-country course, Buhler added another state championship to its resume. The girls' team claimed the title, while the boys placed third, continuing a dominant run that has produced seven state championships in the past eight years.

Supporting students through shutdown

With federal SNAP benefits currently paused due to the government shutdown, Couchman said the district is actively working to provide food support for families in need.

“We’ve had 211 families directly affected — about 10% of our student population,” she said. “Kids can’t learn if they’re hungry.”

The district has launched a “meal in a bag” drive, asking community members to donate meal kits that can be easily distributed to families. Recipes range from tuna casserole to pasta dishes, and donations will continue through November.

“Family helps family,” Couchman emphasized. “It’s something we’re proud of in Buhler — no kid should go hungry.”

Appreciation and culture in the classroom

November is also a time for gratitude in the district. Buhler schools have launched two recognition initiatives: the “Standing Ovation” award and “I Am Thankful For” cards.

Community members can acknowledge a staff member through the district’s social media page, and staff can post public notes of appreciation on classroom doors.

“Words have power,” Couchman said. “Sometimes just hearing ‘you’re doing great’ makes a world of difference.”

Professional development focused on collective efficacy

The district hosted best-selling author and educational thought leader Dr. Jenny Donohoo for a full-day workshop on “collective efficacy” — the belief educators have in their collective ability to positively affect students.
