With the first day of school just days away, Buhler USD 313 is making final preparations for the 2026-27 school year, welcoming new teachers, filling remaining vacancies and finalizing transportation plans.
Superintendent Cindy Couchman said the district's teachers have returned for professional development, with students set to begin classes next week using the district's staggered "slow start" schedule.
The first day of school on Aug. 12 will include students in first through sixth grades, freshmen and other new students. All students in grades one through 12 will attend beginning Aug. 13, while kindergarten and preschool students will follow their own phased schedule.
Couchman said Buhler Schools welcomed 10 new teachers to the district this year, along with several special education teachers through the Reno County Educational Cooperative.'
"It's a little smaller group this year, which always makes me happy," Couchman said. "We love to retain teachers."
Despite the successful hiring season, one certified position remains open. The district is seeking an Ad Astra Academies middle school specialist who will work with students enrolled in the district's virtual and alternative education programs.
"We'd love to have you apply," Couchman said of the remaining opening.
Transportation also remains a challenge heading into the school year.
The district is still short several bus drivers and expects to combine some routes while working to complete pickup schedules for families.
"We need bus drivers," Couchman said. "We'll train you. We'll pay for it. We'd love to have you."
Couchman noted Buhler's transportation system is unique because the district spans approximately 170 square miles and buses students throughout the entire district to its schools in Buhler and Hutchinson.
Families can expect bus pickup information early next week as transportation staff finalize routes before students return to class.
