HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Commissioners will go over a consent agreement that could be the first step in providing water to the Yoder Rural Water District 101.&nbsp;

During Tuesday’s meeting the board will go over the consent agreement with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). The city of Hutchinson is considering selling water to the small rural water district after several attempts to rid the area of high nitrate levels in the water failed to produce the necessary results. The water district located north of Yoder has been out of compliance for nitrate levels for more than a year.

The Hutchinson city council recently said they would agree to sell water to the district if it were needed. The county has also been approached by the city of Haven with an offer to sell water to Yoder but no word on whether that has progressed any further than the offer. The agreement has already been looked over by County Administrator Randy Partington and County Counselor Patrick Hoffman and they have recommended its approval.&nbsp;

Tuesday’s Reno County Commission meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the Reno County courthouse.

Reno Co. Commission will go over water agreement with KDHE

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The issue of Sunday alcohol sales is back before the South Hutchinson City Council for their Monday meeting.&nbsp;

At the previous meeting, Councilman Brian Garretson expressed a desire to allow the sale of alcohol on Sundays. City Attorney Mark Tremaine has since drafted an ordinance to present before the council for their consideration. 

Sunday alcohol sales were last addressed back in 2019. It was April 1st of that year that the council passed an ordinance prohibiting the sale of alcohol on Sundays. But when a local liquor store owner presented a petition with enough valid signatures to the county clerk's office, the matter went to a vote. The proposal was rejected 361 to 321.

Now it looks like the matter could come up for action during tonight’s meeting. The council has three options. Do nothing and let the current ordinance stay in place, approve a new ordinance allowing Sunday liquor sales, or place the matter back on the ballot to be voted on.

Tonight’s meeting of the South Hutchinson City Council begins at 6 p.m. at the South Hutchinson city offices at 2 S. Main.

Sunday alcohol sales back before the South Hutchinson City Council tonight

KINGMAN Kan. —One person died in an accident early Monday in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a semi driven by 72-year-old Marcus W. Craven,&nbsp; of Pueblo, Colorado was eastbound on U.S. when his semi crossed the center line and struck a westbound semi driven by&nbsp; 61-year-old Johnnie Randall Jones, of Greenbrier, Arkansas, head-on.

Craven was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Livingston Funeral Home. EMS transported Jones to St. Francis Medical Center in Wichita with serious injuries.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The accident happened around 12:45 a.m. two miles west of Kingman&nbsp;

Registration is underway for Skip's 'Fore'well Junior Golf Classic. This two-person scramble will be played from the Junior League tees, offering a unique and fun golf experience.&nbsp;

The tournament will be held at Carey Park Golf Course on Friday, Sept. 30 with a 12 p.m. check in, shotgun start at 1 p.m. There will be Hole Prizes and Flight Prizes awarded. The cost is $75 per player. A players dinner and celebration will be held after the tournament.

Skip Wilson golf tournament Sept. 30

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two people were arrested on suspicion of drug distribution in Hutchinson Friday afternoon.

The Drug Enforcement Unit took Morgan Boeschling and Jamie Boeschling into custody on suspicion of drug possession, drug distribution within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of drug proceeds, contributing to a child's misconduct, and criminal possession of a firearm.

Authorities served a search warrant at a home in the 1400 block of N. Severance. There they found 12 pounds of marijuana and other drugs, cash and nine firearms. Jamie Boeschling is free on bond while Morgan is still being held on a bond of $51,000.

Formal charges could be filed later this week.

Two arrested for drug distribution

Christina Unrein, Nurse Manager with the Hutchinson VA Community-Based Outpatient Clinic said they want to serve more veterans, all they have to do is walk in.

"We invite any veteran who is seeking health care to just walk on in any time," Unrein said. "We are open Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All veterans who are looking for health care can come in, bring their DD-214, and we have front line staff there ready and available to help you get signed up to see if you're eligible for health care."

They serve over 2000 veterans at the clinic, providing primary care services, but they also will make sure you get connected with the specialists available at the Dole VA Center in Wichita, if you need them, or with other resources that are available to veterans.

"If you have a specialty care need, too, we will help collaborate those services for the veteran," Unrein said. "We take care of all their needs. We have homeless services available if you walk in. We have veterans that come in that haven't eaten in a few days that are living on the streets. If they walk in, we are absolutely going to take you by the hand and take you in and welcome you, get you some food. A lot of times we are buying meals for these guys and bring them in and we will set you up with the homeless care services program immediately to get them the services they need to get them off the streets."

The VA believes there are a lot more veterans entitled to benefits that live here that are not using them.

"We've got about 2000 right here in Reno County, but there's another 2300 in Reno County who are probably eligible for VA health care and have not registered with us," said spokesman Jeff Herndon. "We encourage you to get on the website va.gov. You can register for health care there. You can call, there's an 800 number on that website as well. If you entered active duty after October 16, 1981 and you served 24 months amd you were discharged honorably or under general conditions, then you are eligible for VA health care. If you are reserve or National Guard, you were called up on federal orders and served the full period for which you were called up, you too are eligible for VA health care. Not if it was just training, but if you were called up on to active duty and deployed, than you are, absolutely as a reservist or National Guardsman, eligible for VA health care."

Hutchinson VA clinic would like to serve more Reno County veterans

NICKERSON, Kan. — The Nickerson USD 309 Board of Education will go over the final contracts with two firms that will be a part of a $ 10 million bond issue should it be approved by voters.

During Monday’s meeting, the board will seek approval of the contract with Alloy Architecture of Wichita. Under the contract Alloy will provide pre-bond election and post-bond election services for the district including identifying existing needs, review budgets for such projects, and assist with prioritizing needs for the district. They will also do all of the design work for the project should voters give their approval.

The other contract is with McCown Gordon who has been appointed as the contractor and construction manager at risk for the project. McCown Gordon will run the entire project including the bidding and construction process. The construction management at risk method has been used in several area projects including the sports arena renovation and the last USD 308 bond issue.

Tonight’s Nickerson USD 309 Board meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the school district offices at 4501 W. 4th Avenue.

I give a lot of my time to help young leaders grow and develop through programs like 4-H and FFA. Though my biggest motivation is paying it forward because of all the people who helped me, I also directly benefit from working with these students who are experts on pop culture, new fashion, slang terminology and the latest social media trends.

Now that I am solidly a mid-career professional, I sometimes forget how easy it is to lose touch with the changing world. My students are always ready to explain what “Hot Girl Summer” means, why people love the Kardashians and so many other things that might have completely passed over my head otherwise.

Earlier this summer, my intern introduced me to one of the hot new social media sites Be Real. This platform prompts users at a random time daily to take and share a quick snapshot of life. Users have 2 minutes to take a snap that includes both front and back facing views. This quick, random time frame doesn’t allow people much time to make themselves or their life look better than reality. It is meant to showcase the mundane, messy and unfiltered reality of your life. After posting your shot you can see what your friends are up to and interact with comments and emoji’s like other social media platforms. If a user fails to snap a picture they miss out on seeing their friends’ posts for the day.

At first I thought the idea was super strange, but with time it grew on me. Social media is often criticized for fake and overly glamorous view of many people’s lives, which can lead many users to negative impacts on the mental health of users. Be Real makes it harder to fake a picture-perfect life, showing more realistic and normal views of how we live.

It struck me that Be Real is the perfect platform for farmers. There are so many people who have no idea what a farmer does on any given day. Even when someone tours a farm or follows their social media they get a very narrow view that is often the shiny filtered version.

If farmers were using Be Real, I am confident that you would occasionally catch a beautiful sunset while checking an irrigator, or a new born baby calf nursing for the first time and some of the other exciting moments in farming. However, more of the snaps would be of the mundane things famers do every day like crawling over or under something to fix a machine, chasing animals that got out of the fence, doing office work, driving back and forth for hours in the same field, running to town to get parts, fueling equipment, fixing fences, checking rain gages or dry fields, looking for bugs, equipment maintenance, putting out a grass fire and a hundred other tasks that happen every day. Plus the farmer would definitely be covered in sweat, oil, dirt or manure in 95 percent of the pictures.

If you paid close attention, you would also be able to feel the roller coaster of emotions that exist during a season. The hope of planting, fear caused by weeks of high temperatures and drought, the pain of lost animals and crops, the relief of rain and the pride of completing harvest.

Unfortunately, I don’t think many farmers will catch on to this social media trend because they probably wouldn’t hear the notification or be in a place where they had time to get their phone out and take a picture. You will have to take my word for it: farming is as real as it gets.

Kan. — Now that McPherson voters have approved renewing the second half-cent sales tax, administration and staff need to start prioritizing a list of projects.

McPherson looking for project priorities

HUTCHINSON – Hutchinson High School teacher Amber Carithers will be inducted into the Wichita State University College of Applied Studies Hall of Fame on October 21, 2022.

Carithers is among eight other inductees for 2022 into the College of Applied Studies (CAS)&nbsp; Hall of Fame. Inductees come from various backgrounds, and they will be recognized for their accomplishments within their fields. According to the CAS Hall of Fame announcement, “The CAS Hall of Fame recognizes individuals or groups of individuals who have made a positive impact on the college at any point since its founding. The traits and qualities Hall of Fame members possess are reflective of the college’s core values of collaboration, discovery, diversity, integrity and leadership.”

Carithers was named a Kansas Teacher of the Year finalist for 2021 and has served as an English Language Arts teacher at Hutchinson High School for ten&nbsp;years. As a finalist, Carithers visited other districts with the Kansas Teacher of the Year team, and she was recognized by the Kansas State Senate in January 2022. Inductees come from various backgrounds, and they will be recognized for their accomplishments within their fields. According to the CAS Hall of Fame announcement, “The CAS Hall of Fame recognizes individuals or groups of individuals who have made a positive impact on the college at any point since its founding. The traits and qualities Hall of Fame members possess are reflective of the college’s core values of collaboration, discovery, diversity, integrity and leadership.”Carithers was named a Kansas Teacher of the Year finalist for 2021 and has served as an English Language Arts teacher at Hutchinson High School for ten&nbsp;years. As a finalist, Carithers visited other districts with the Kansas Teacher of the Year team, and she was recognized by the Kansas State Senate in January 2022. HUTCHINSON – Interfaith Housing and Community Services announced Monday that Clint Nelson was selected as their new Chief Executive Officer. 

Nelson has been an integral part of Interfaith for the past sixteen years. Nelson was selected by the Interfaith Board of Directors to replace the retiring Lorna Moore.

Nelson joined Interfaith Housing Services in 2006 working primarily within the Rental program while also assisting with volunteer oversight and renovation projects. From 2008 to 2016 Nelson served as the lead Property/Asset Manager during rental program expansion into both Harper and Ford Counties. 

In 2017, Nelson became the Director of Housing Development with primary oversight of housing production, property acquisitions, negotiated contracts, and project grant writing. Nelson has played a key role in working through operational and financial strategies with the internal Leadership Team.

As part of the new leadership team, Interfaith also promoted Ashley Cain to Chief Financial Officer, Lacy Stauffacher to Chief Operations Officer, and Jeff Thomson to Chief Projects Officer.

Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman knows it will be an adjustment when the traffic light at 30th and Lucille is taken down later this month.

"We want everyone to be very cautious, especially at drop off time and dismissal time at Prairie Hills," Couchman said. "If you're traveling along that road during those hours, if you can find an alternative route to work, to free up any congestion, that wouldn't be needed, it might be a good idea until we can get that traffic flow pattern started again."

It will go back to 30th being a through street and stop signs on Lucille on both sides of the intersection.

"We, obviously, are also asking our parents to be very patient during pick up time," Couchman said. "Without the light, those left hand turns coming on to 30th are going to take some time."

Couchman said if they can get buses out of the lot, the traffic flow goes a lot faster. With school starting at PHMS at 7:45 a.m., things start to get busy early.

"About 7:20 a.m. to about 7:45 a.m., I would expect traffic to be very heavy along 30th and Lucille," Couchman said. "Dismissal is at 2:50 p.m. Really from about 2:30 p.m. to about 3:15 p.m., that time period, it will be heavy traffic."

Couchman said the last time she drove through at pickup time, even with the existing stoplight, traffic was backed up on 30th all the way to Apple Lane. Especially until young drivers figure out their most efficient route, it will be important to be patient with the process. 

August 23 at 8:30 a.m., new stop signs will be installed on Lucille and the temporary traffic signal at 30th and Lucille will be placed on flash, yellow flashing for 30th and red flashing for Lucille. The traffic signal will stay on flash until Aug. 30, at which time it will be removed.

Public Works says a recent traffic signal analysis of the intersection showed that the temporary traffic signal is no longer needed.

BUHLER, Kan. — The need for reliable, fiber internet across Kansas continues to propel IdeaTek Telcom in the ranks of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies, landing the broadband provider at 2,310 on the 2022 Inc. 5,000 list recently revealed by Inc. magazine. 

This is the ninth time IdeaTek has made the list. Last year, the company ranked 822. The list is based on three-year growth rates. To date, the company has deployed more than 4,000 miles of fiber and built 100 fixed wireless towers to serve customers in nearly 70 Kansas communities. 

Significant private investment paired with several state and federal broadband expansion programs has helped Ideatek grow. The company has tripled its workforce to 130, adding nearly 90 jobs in the past two years.

In May of this year, Ideatek was awarded a Broadband Acceleration Grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce to bring fiber to rural Seward County. 

The company also is working with several communities, including a public-private partnership with South Hutchinson to provide other opportunities for growth.

Hutchinson Mayor Jade Piros de Carvalho said at least one hotel deal in Hutchinson is close to getting done.

"I am very excited about the conversations we've been having with a very proven developer who lives in Wichita," the mayor said. "In fact, we recently, I think on Tuesday, just had an executive session to kind of shore up the incentive package, so we should be voting on that, hopefully within the next month, which could put a new hotel in Hutchinson by 2024."

The mayor wouldn't give specifics on where the hotel would be.

"We think that this is going to be a really high quality product," the mayor said. "It's important to pick a good developer. We didn't necessarily make the right choice 15 years ago with the Atrium and so, we've just been very cautious about doing our due diligence. I know it's taking longer than anyone wants. We just want to make the right decision."

Right now, the city is going through code enforcement actions on the Atrium property, but if <a href="https://archive.hayspost.com/2017/07/07/%f0%9f%8e%a5-proposed-nuisance-abatement-of-former-ambassador-hotel-draws-owners-ire/">history in Hays is any guide</a>, owner Joshua Joseph hasn't always treated governing bodies with deference when it comes to his properties.

"Time will tell if the developer will abide by those violation requests, or if we'll just have to take care of them ourselves and put them on the property tax bill," the mayor said.

The Atrium had 220 rooms at its peak. The proposed hotel would be around 100 rooms.

Hutchinson and Reno County celebrated 150 years during Third Thursday in August. In honor of this celebration, we will release one decade each afternoon from The Decades, which were originally featured from September to November of 2021.

As we celebrate the 150th birthday of Hutchinson and Reno County, we want to go through the years, decade by decade, to see how things have changed and — remarkably — how they have stayed the same. This would not be possible without the efforts of Steve Harmon, the Reno County Museum, and the Hutchinson Public Library, who have made a great effort to supply us with the information and photos that you’ll see in this 15-part series. We hope you enjoy it.

A combination of holding your breath and wild celebration is a part of the rollover to Y2K. Police guard banks and many watch to see if their computers will function. Once everything settled down, there was a lot of news in the 2000s, including 9/11, the Hutchinson gas explosions, and a scandal in the sheriff’s department. Efforts begin to save one of the city’s historic buildings, HutchCC and HHS get a beautiful new home for football and track, and one of the more high-profile trials begins when Max Ary is indicted. There's a new home for Eagle Communications and a major highway project begins. That, plus Siemens and more as we begin the new millennium on this edition of The Decades.

150 Years: Looking back through The Decades - 2000s

HARVEY COUNTY — A Buhler man was killed in an accident in rural Harvey County Saturday afternoon. 

The Harvey County Sheriff's Office says a car was traveling westbound in the 23600 block of West Dutch Avenue when it crossed the center line, colliding with an eastbound SUV.

The driver of the westbound car, 37-year-old Timothy Rutherford of Buhler was pronounced dead at the scene. It is not known why Rutherford's vehicle crossed the center line.

There were four occupants in the SUV. All received non-life-threatening injuries in the crash. One occupant was transported by EMS to a local hospital for treatment.

Harvey County accident kills one, injures four others Saturday

Kan. — 
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson was in Hutchinson Friday to visit the Cosmosphere. The museum elicited a wow from him, but he's also seeing a lot of what's happening in space now as wow-worthy, too.

"Look what all is happening right in front of us," Nelson said. "The telescope, what it's teaching us. We're going to move an asteroid out of its trajectory. We're going back to the moon after 50 years. We are doing all kinds of science on the International Space Station. We've got major cancer research and pharmaceutical research that is going on, using 0G."

He's positive about the relationship that the two space programs of Russia and the U.S. can have, even as the conflict with Ukraine makes things more difficult on Earth.

"The civilian space program, in this case, the operation of the International Space Station that was done with Russia and the United States building it, and therefore necessary to operate it, continues in a very professional manner," Nelson said. "The astronauts and the cosmonauts are getting along."

The next big thing for NASA is the Artemis I test launch August 29.

"We're going to stress it, before we put humans on it," Nelson said. "We are going back to the moon and then that is just the beginning of going back to learn, to live, to work, to create the systems and the technology so that we can send humans to Mars."

The launch countdown for Artemis I will begin Saturday, Aug. 27, at 10:23 a.m.

Looking at the current regulations, they say that no solar panel shall be constructed within the residential zoning jurisdiction of the City of Hutchinson unless a zoning certificate is approved and issued by the zoning administrator and is constructed in conformance with the building permit and conform to the required front, side and rear lot setback requirements except that a solar panel which is attached to an integral part of the principal building may project two feet into the front yard; six feet into the rear yard; and two feet into the side yard; and a solar panel which is freestanding may be located only in the rear yard provided it does not exceed six feet in height and is located not less than five feet from the rear lot line and not closer than one foot to any existing easement as measured from the closest point of the structure including its foundation and anchorage, nor shall the solar panel be located in the side yard or front yard setback.Also on the agenda is the Borders preliminary and final plat, which Williams hopes to have finished in time for the meeting.Tuesday's Hutchinson Planning Commission meeting is at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chamber at 125 E Avenue B.
