HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson firefighters were able to quickly put out a fire Tuesday evening.

Crews were called out to 715 East 56th at 5:36 p.m., where they found smoke coming out of the rear of the home. The fire was limited to one room and the only person inside got out before they called 911.&nbsp;

The cause of the fire was due to improper use of a cooking appliance. No one was hurt.

Hutch firefighters confine blaze to one room Tuesday evening

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A public vote on an $8 million bond issue for USD 313 patrons failed Tuesday. The preliminary count was 954 No to 578 Yes.

The bond would have paid for an administration center expansion and Ad Astra Academy space, along with plans for new equipment for the district's elementary playgrounds and an indoor athletic facility.

The district said the proposal would have held tax rates level, even with the new bonding, thanks to two previous bond refinancing moves and the overall valuation growth in the district.

Projects like the one rejected Tuesday cannot be paid for through any other part of the school finance formula. The overall mill levy is determined by the general fund, supplemental general fund, capital outlay, and bond and interest.

USD 313 bond election fails

RENO COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 1 p.m. Tuesday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Jeep Patriot driven by Bonnie Heather Cole, 38, Hutchinson, was eastbound on Kansas 96 making a left turn onto Main Street in Haven.

The driver failed to yield. The Jeep traveled into the path of westbound 2012 Nissan Quest driven by&nbsp; Leslie Rae Canady, 37, Wichita. The vehicles collided in the intersection.

EMS transported Cole to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and Canaday to Via Christi in Wichita. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Hutchinson woman hospitalized after 2-vehicle crash

HARVEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating the death of a man found in a home east of Hesston died of an accidental drug overdose, according to Harvey County spokesperson&nbsp;Kyle McCaskey.

On March 30, the Sheriff’s Office and EMS were called to the home&nbsp;in the 8000 block of North West Road after two acquaintances found two men unresponsive in a home.

Emergency responders found one man dead inside the home. An investigation determined Ardell Jones, 48, of Newton, died of a drug overdose.

Emergency responders also found a 55-year-old man in critical condition due to drug use inside the home. Life-saving measures were performed on scene prior to the man being transported to an area hospital. He has since been released from the hospital. He is a resident of the home.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp; The Kansas State Fair and the American Red Cross are asking for additional help for the final day of a Hutchinson Community Blood Drive. Only 51 of 109 appointments have been filled for Wednesday as of late Tuesday afternoon.

Blood Drive on State Fairgrounds concludes Wednesday

HARVEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities continue to investigate after human remains were found in eastern Harvey County Monday afternoon, according to county public information officer&nbsp;Kyle McCaskey.

The remains were found near a hedge row near East First Street and North Rock Road.

The investigation has determined the deceased individual is a woman. Identifying information about the woman was not found on scene. 

The Harvey County Coroner’s Office will examine dental records and perform an autopsy to determine the woman’s identity.

The cause of death of the woman has not been determined. It is not known if foul play was involved.

Human remains found in Harvey Co. were of a woman

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;<a href="https://opendoorhealthservices.com/" target="_blank">Open Door Health Services</a> with the <a href="https://www.hutchchamber.com/" target="_blank">Hutchinson and Reno County Chamber of Commerce</a> held a ribbon-cutting on April 4, to celebrate Open Door Health Services’ rebranding and their new partnership with <a href="https://www.hutchcc.edu/" target="_blank">Hutchinson Community College</a> (HCC).

Open Door Health Services was <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/0291fd82-0569-4198-873b-59792c070280">formerly Open Door Pregnancy Care Center</a>. &nbsp;

The ribbon-cutting took place in the Student Union Parking Lot at HCC.&nbsp;

Open Door Health Services provides confidential sexual health services for men and women from licensed medical professionals. &nbsp;

“Open Door has been known for over 20 years as Open Door Pregnancy Care Center, and in 2023 we just changed our name to Open Door Health Services because we're expanding the number of medical services we're offering and in particular beginning a college campus Outreach program,” Kristi Busatti, Open Door Health Services Executive Director, said. &nbsp;

&nbsp;According to Busatti, there are 14 colleges within an 80-mile radius of Open-Door Health Services. &nbsp;

“It's our desire to partner with those colleges to provide all of our services that we offer in our center on our mobile unit, which is a big RV that will drive around town,” Busatti said. “Our pilot program is HCC, we're partnering with them and we started last week.”&nbsp;

Busatti said Open Door went through a big process with HutchCC President Doctor Carter File and the President's Council to receive approval for their partnership.&nbsp;

“Every Tuesday at 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., our mobile unit is parked in the Student Union parking lot at HCC to offer all of our services.” &nbsp;

People can go to the mobile unit on Tuesdays to get tested, then follow-up a week later for their results. 

Should someone test positive, the free treatment will be available at the mobile unit, making travel to a pharmacy unnecessary.

Free medical services that Open Door Health Services include:&nbsp;

Medical Ultrasounds. Pre-approval is required for ultrasounds. &nbsp;

“Our mobile unit has gone to different towns for the past two years, but we started our college campus outreach last week,” Busatti said. “Last Tuesday was our opening day at HCC.”&nbsp;

Since the pilot program just started and the spring semester ends soon, Busatti said Open Door plans to introduce other campuses in the fall. &nbsp;

“We plan to start with Bethel College in Newton and both of the colleges in McPherson,” Busatti said. “We don't have those solidified yet, but we'd like for that to be in the fall semester, so we're starting out with a pilot program with just HCC for this semester and this summer.”&nbsp;

Open Door Health Services partnering with HutchCC

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Get emergency and non-emergency notifications from Hutchinson-Reno County Emergency Communications through the free Everbridge Resident Alerts system. 

To receive these notifications, you must opt-in by entering your contact information and subscribe to notifications. If you are already signed up, there have been a large number of additional notification options added recently. 

Users can also set quiet times so that they receive notifications only when they want them.

Sign up for resident alerts for emergency notifications

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Families are invited to join <a href="http://www.oxfordhouse.org/pdf/ks" target="_blank">Oxford House</a> Chapter 13 for an Easter Egg Hunt on April 8. &nbsp;

Events will start at 11 a.m. with photos with the Easter Bunny available until 5 p.m. Photos will be printed on site by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/aliciakoeppenphotography/" target="_blank">Alicia K Photos</a>.&nbsp;

There will be two Easter Egg Hunts, one at noon and one at 4 p.m.&nbsp;

The day’s festivities will be by freewill donation to help Oxford House raise funds. &nbsp;

“We’re raising money to send members of our chapter to the World Convention,” Charles Ford with Oxford House said. “We're just raising money right now to get us as many people as we can sent out there.”&nbsp;

The Oxford House World Convention is an annual event where Oxford members from all over the U.S. gather to share their stories and promote recovery from addiction. &nbsp; &nbsp;

“We’re pushing for $10,000 so that we can send close to ten people,” Ford said. “It takes about $1,000 a person to send someone to the World Convention.” &nbsp;

According to Ford, Oxford House Chapter 13 has raised about $2,500. &nbsp;

Oxford House’s Easter Egg Hunt will be at DCI Park located at 20 W. 2nd Ave. in Hutchinson. &nbsp;

Oxford House hosting Easter Egg Hunt 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After over a half hour of discussion on Tuesday, the Hutchinson City Council voted 3-2 to put the 30th and Lucille intersection back as it was before August of 2019, with no traffic signal. 

Mayor John Richardson and council members Greg Fast and Stuart Conklin voted to keep the intersection as is with no light. Council members Steve Garza and Stacy Goss wanted to do more study on the intersection.

City staff had recommended that the intersection be put back.

In August of 2019, the City installed a temporary traffic signal at 30th and Lucille with the intention of removing it upon completion of the 43rd Avenue bridge.

Once the bridge was complete, the City had JEO perform a warrant analysis on August 12, 2022, to make sure that the signal was not warranted at that intersection.

The results from that study showed that it was not warranted, and the signal was removed.

Jim Tobaben discussed the signal warrant analysis and its findings at the last study session on March 7, 2023.

The remnants of the temporary signal equipment will now be removed. This group of five people has voted on the issue, and unless the makeup of the council changes, or there are drastic changes to the circumstances at the intersection, the issue is moot.

The next election of council members is this fall.

Newton USD 373 opens 2023-24 enrollment

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Denny Stoecklein with Hutchinson Community College said over 200 employers will be at the annual Career Connections Job Fair Thursday, April 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

"This is going to be the biggest ever," Stoecklein said. "Really, with what we hear about employment out there, that should be no surprise. At last count that I saw, there were 203 employers registered to be at the Sports Arena on Thursday."

After the layoffs at Sonoco Paper and Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, along with the graduating students at area colleges, there is a pool of applicants that are looking for work.

"It's free to attend," Stoecklein said. "We really encourage folks to come out. We've got employers looking for full-time, part-time, internships, high school, college students, this is not just something for our students. This is a community event. We know we have employers coming from not just Hutchinson, but throughout the state."

It would be useful to do research ahead of time, as even if you come prepared and stay the whole four hours, there's no way to get face time with all of the employers that will be there.

"At&nbsp;<a href="https://hutchcc.edu/careerfair">https://hutchcc.edu/careerfair</a>, you can get some resources, if you want a little help putting a resume together, or just get job prep information, plus it provides a list of all the employers who are going to be there," Stoecklein said. "That links to some of the needs they have, so you can dig down and do a little bit of research before you walk in the door Thursday. Do a little bit of prep work, plus, if you've shown you've done some prep work, that will resonate very nicely with potential employers. They know that you're someone who is going to put a little bit of effort into finding the right employment for you that could be for them, as well."

Stoecklein said the entire arena floor and the concourse will have employers on it that you can talk to on Thursday.

KDOT announces approved March bids

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jackson Swearer with StartUp Hutch said that the results of the 2022 Economic Impact Survey compiled by StartUp Hutch are positive, in his view.

"We use those results to guide our work to some extent," Swearer said. "We also share some of that information with our local public funding partners who help to support StartUp Hutch in our operations. That helps us to show the impact that our organization and local entrepreneurs and small businesses are having on our economy."

The best measures are how much money are you making and did you need more people to get the work done?

"The main questions that we ask are we ask for people's revenues and we also ask for some jobs numbers, including what their past jobs numbers were and current. We're trying to measure job growth. We did see that among the 21 respondents to our survey, which represents mostly folks who have borrowed some funds from us, but also just some people who I meet with throughout the year, they had a little under $10 million in total revenue and employed 233 people with 20 new jobs being created last year."

It's not that these businesses don't have challenges, though.

"We also ask people about what obstacles they are facing in business right now," Swearer said. "A lot of people referenced struggles with staffing and struggles with financing. I think the higher interest rate environment and low unemployment rate, small labor pool is affecting some of our local businesses, as well. Despite those headwinds, we are really seeing a lot of great economic activity in our small business community. I think that's something to celebrate."

Swearer: Despite economic headwinds, small business doing well

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Red Flag Warning for Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Extreme Grassland Fire Danger is forecast.

Winds will be from the Southwest 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph.

Relative Humidity will be as low as 9 percent in spots.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly  and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not  recommended.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

Also, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. this afternoon to 1 a.m. Wednesday.&nbsp;

Southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph are  expected.

Red Flag Warning, Wind Advisory in effect for Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — HEELO Inc. CEO and founder Shontina Tipton announced a fundraiser April 11 for the 2023 Juneteenth events.

That fundraiser will be at Spangles at 120 East 4th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. that evening.

Twenty percent of all food and drink sales and 100% of all counter donations will support this year's Juneteenth activities through HEELO Inc.

In 2022, the Juneteenth pancake feed served 150 community members and their families, the car show had 20 entrants and raised $350 for the Edward L. 'Eddie' Tipton Minority Scholarship Endowment at HutchCC. 

Also, there was a blood drive, a movie, a domino and spades tournament and music by the George Sander Band.

HEELO Inc. joining Spangles for Juneteenth fundraiser

MCPHERSON, Kan. — A vision, 10 years in the making, has come true for students, alumni, and employees of the McPherson College Automotive Restoration program — the only four-year bachelor’s degree program for automotive restoration in the nation. The 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300 S Cabriolet, entirely restored by students, has been accepted by the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and will be shown there on August 20.

“Congratulations&nbsp;to the McPherson College students for having their car accepted to Pebble Beach,” said comedian and car enthusiast Jay Leno. Leno’s support 20 years ago was the turning point for the program when it pivoted from an associate’s to a bachelor’s degree. “I am proud to be associated with the college. Much like art historians who clean and repair the works of the renaissance era, the young men and women at McPherson College are doing it with automobiles, recreating abilities and techniques long forgotten, and they’ll make a good living doing it. Our hobby and heritage are safe in their hands.”

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is the oldest Concours in the United States and one of the world’s most prestigious gatherings of rare and antique automobiles. Prized collector cars compete each year for Best of Show, the most coveted award in the automotive industry. The Concours Selection Committee spends weeks vetting each entry, narrowing its selection down to the top classic cars in the world, which are invited to show.

“We set a bold vision 10 years ago to show a car at Pebble Beach, and I was confident our students and staff could attain it,” said Amanda Gutierrez, provost and vice president of automotive restoration. “The goal was to get invited to compete at Pebble Beach, but there is a significant process that makes that happen, especially at a small college with students working outside of class hours. This project has been a valuable learning experience for our students as they study toward their bachelor’s degree in automotive restoration. It was intense work requiring exceptional commitment, and I am extremely proud of them.”&nbsp;

After an exhaustive search for the right car, work on the project began and has incorporated classroom curricula, expert guest lectures, and senior capstone experiences. The restoration was completed by teams of student interns who worked over the course of the restoration. Brian Martin, director of automotive restoration projects, supervises the student team.

“When we set out to do this, we knew it was going to be a long-term commitment,” Martin said. “It is a complete, frame-off, top-to-bottom restoration by students. We planned for it to become the cornerstone of our program and an example of the skills our students develop while they are here.”

McPherson College has a long history of student participation at Pebble Beach, dating back to 2008 when the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and Pebble Beach Company Foundation established scholarships honoring Formula One World Champion and famed restorer Phil Hill. Over the years, more than 25 McPherson College students have earned college scholarships from Pebble Beach.

Pebble Beach Company Foundation scholarship recipients not only attend the event and shadow the judges, they also have been part of panel discussions, prepared and presented cars for the field, and attended numerous additional events during the week. However, this August will mark the first time the college will show a classic vehicle fully restored by its students.

“It’s a remarkable accomplishment,” said McPherson College President Michael Schneider. “Since the project began, nearly every student in the auto restoration program has been exposed to the restoration through classes, workshops, or as part of an internship team. For some of them, getting a chance to work on this project was why they decided to attend McPherson College. This achievement will positively impact our students and program for years. Managing this project was an enormous undertaking, and I commend the individuals, especially Brian Martin, who helped mentor our students through this process. Our friends at Paul Russell and Company, as well as the Mercedes Benz Classic Center, were excellent advisors on the project. I also thank Jay Leno, whose early and consistent support over the years has helped us flourish and reach Pebble Beach.”

Members of the student team, the Pebble Beach Scholars, college staff, and alumni will accompany the car to Pebble Beach in August. A recognition of their efforts will be celebrated during the CARS Club Motoring Festival on Saturday, May 6, at McPherson College at 2 p.m. before the awards ceremony.

Showing a student-restored car at Pebble Beach is another example of McPherson College achieving what many consider impossible. In November, the college announced a historic $500 million matching gift. To date, the college has raised over $170 million of the $250 million needed to secure the $500 million, including generous gifts from car enthusiasts Melanie and Richard Lundquist, the Rob Walton Foundation, and Dave Kinney.

McPherson College will show car at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Open Door Health Services is holding a ribbon cutting Tuesday, April 4 at 11:30 a.m. Open Door is celebrating the new partnership with Hutchinson Community College and the new services they will be providing. 

 The mobile unit will be in the Student Union Parking Lot at HutchCC.&nbsp;

The mobile unit is now on campus every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., parked in the Student Union parking lot, to provide all of the services&nbsp; provided at the center, right there on the mobile unit, with an emphasis on free STI testing. 

A person can get tested on a Tuesday at the mobile unit, and then one&nbsp;week later, they can come back to the mobile unit where Open Door will have the results. If the test is positive, the free treatment will be available right there on the mobile unit. The student won't have to travel to a pharmacy or anything like that. All of that is free.&nbsp;

No burnt materials at landfill Tuesday

McPHERSON — The McPherson County Community Foundation (MCCF) has announced the final totals of their Match Week event. Between Mar. 6-10 over $590,000, with match included, was raised to help build the endowments of 44 county nonprofits. This total breaks the record of $386,000 set by the foundation just last year.

“What our communities have done this year for our organizations is brilliant,” Becky Goss, President and CEO of MCCF, said, “What this proves is that the citizens of McPherson County are committed to the future. We’ve shown that we are committed to making sure that these organizations and programs will be here for our children and grandchildren.”

McPherson Opera House received the largest amount finishing with a grand total of $162,615 after the match was applied. Steps Against Poverty McPherson County received the most donations with a total of 77 different donors.

Since beginning in 2014 the event has raised over 2.5 million dollars. The change from a one-day event to an entire week, came after the record-breaking success of 2021. The Foundation determined more time gave organizations more opportunities.

The matching total for this year’s event was $100,000. This total comes from a combination of the Patterson Family Foundation and the Gaeddert Family Fund. MCCF received the Patterson Family Foundation ‘Community Foundation Match Program’ grant worth $70,000. Part of this grant allowed for all the organizations to receive a minimum of $1,000 total before the overall match was applied. Most of the grant was used towards the overall matching total.

The Patterson Family Foundation is a family-led foundation extending the legacy of Neal and Jeanne Patterson to improve the rural communities we come from through health care, education, economic opportunity, and beyond. In partnership with the Kansas Association of Community Foundations (KACF), the Patterson Family Foundation is opening a match grant program for community foundations in rural and micropolitan communities in Kansas and Western Missouri. Funds may be used as match funds for any 2023 match event so that the impact of local donors’ gifts can be amplified. Each community is eligible to receive up to $70,000.

Moundridge Foundation and Inman Foundation both received the full $70,000 and their matching events will take place in the fall.

Matching funds are given to organizations on a proportional basis. For example, if an organization receives 10% of the total donations, they will receive $10,000 to use for immediate needs. Organizations can receive a maximum of 20% of the matching total.

 </figure>McPHERSON — The McPherson County Community Foundation (MCCF) has announced the final totals of their Match Week event. Between Mar. 6-10 over $590,000, with match included, was raised to help build the endowments of 44 county nonprofits. This total breaks the record of $386,000 set by the foundation just last year.“What our communities have done this year for our organizations is brilliant,” Becky Goss, President and CEO of MCCF, said, “What this proves is that the citizens of McPherson County are committed to the future. We’ve shown that we are committed to making sure that these organizations and programs will be here for our children and grandchildren.”McPherson Opera House received the largest amount finishing with a grand total of $162,615 after the match was applied. Steps Against Poverty McPherson County received the most donations with a total of 77 different donors.Since beginning in 2014 the event has raised over 2.5 million dollars. The change from a one-day event to an entire week, came after the record-breaking success of 2021. The Foundation determined more time gave organizations more opportunities.The matching total for this year’s event was $100,000. This total comes from a combination of the Patterson Family Foundation and the Gaeddert Family Fund. MCCF received the Patterson Family Foundation ‘Community Foundation Match Program’ grant worth $70,000. Part of this grant allowed for all the organizations to receive a minimum of $1,000 total before the overall match was applied. Most of the grant was used towards the overall matching total.The Patterson Family Foundation is a family-led foundation extending the legacy of Neal and Jeanne Patterson to improve the rural communities we come from through health care, education, economic opportunity, and beyond. In partnership with the Kansas Association of Community Foundations (KACF), the Patterson Family Foundation is opening a match grant program for community foundations in rural and micropolitan communities in Kansas and Western Missouri. Funds may be used as match funds for any 2023 match event so that the impact of local donors’ gifts can be amplified. Each community is eligible to receive up to $70,000.Moundridge Foundation and Inman Foundation both received the full $70,000 and their matching events will take place in the fall.Matching funds are given to organizations on a proportional basis. For example, if an organization receives 10% of the total donations, they will receive $10,000 to use for immediate needs.
