HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Maintaining his defense to the very end that he was drugged, raped, and shot at, Kyle V. Hardwick was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences for the murders of Marion Edward “Ed” Bates, 56, and Phillip “Phil” D. Anstine, 58, both of Hutchinson, on April 7.&nbsp;

Kyle V. Hardwick was represented by Scott Loftis, an attorney from Ponca City, Oklahoma. Hardwick pled not guilty through the entire trial. &nbsp;

Two counts of intentional and premeditated murder in the first degree. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

One count of theft of property or services, valued at $1,500 to $25,000, and an alternating count of theft of property or services of a firearm with a value less than $25,000.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

One count of solicitation perjury; testify to material fact in felony proceeding.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

On Aug. 27, 2021, Reno County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to 1016 N. Palomino Trail in Reno County based on information they received&nbsp;regarding the owners of that property. &nbsp;

When they arrived at the scene, deputies spoke to three witnesses present at the property who were concerned because they had been unable to contact Ed Bates or Phil Anstine since the evening of Aug. 25, 2021. &nbsp;

A search of the property followed.&nbsp;They eventually discovered a body in a shallow and mostly-dry pond on the property that had been covered by tree branches. A further check of the property resulted in the discovery of the badly burned and charred remains of a second body in a burn pit that had been covered by a pallet and metal sheeting.&nbsp;

A&nbsp;search warrant for the property, called “the compound,” was obtained and then executed on Aug. 28, 2021. &nbsp;

Both bodies were recovered. Along with the charred body in the burn pit, other items — such as the remains of a shotgun barrel — were recovered. &nbsp;

Forensic investigation conducted by Dr. Scott Kipper with the Sedgwick County Forensic Center and Reno County District Attorney’s Office determined the bodies to be of Ed Bates and Phil Anstine. &nbsp;

Autopsies determined they were killed by a shotgun and the manner of death was determined to be homicide.&nbsp;

Subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Kyle V. Hardwick on Sept. 1 in Maize near a Dollar General where he had made purchases. Formal charges of premeditated intentional murder of each victim and two alternative counts of theft were filed in Reno County District Court by the Reno County District Attorney’s Office. &nbsp;

A count of solicitation to commit perjury was added to the complaint after a May 19, 2022, telephone conversation during which it was alleged that the defendant attempted to solicit perjury from a witness, identified as a woman intimately known to him as Sherry Reed. &nbsp;

The Reno County District Attorney’s Office called approximately 60 witnesses and submitted more than 130 exhibits during the trial, which lasted about two weeks. &nbsp;

The defendant, Hardwick, claimed at trial that he had killed Ed Bates and Phil Anstine in self-defense.&nbsp;

Described by the state in their opening statement, the "compound" is a property east of Hutchinson, where Ed&nbsp;Bates and Phil Anstine would frequent. It had various other additions like buildings built on it, a camper, a dried-up pond, and burn pits. The two men would hang out there, shoot firearms, and overall hone their survival techniques. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Of the two male victims, Hardwick knew Phil Anstine.&nbsp;

Hardwick did not know Marion Bates, but had a prior association with Phil Anstine through work that included building houses, akin to Habitat for Humanity. Anstine was said to have overseen much of the work, while Hardwick assisted with installation. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hardwick called Anstine a friend and they were said to have a mutual interest in firearms. They were said to be close enough that they would travel to visit each other from time-to-time, but not frequently. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hardwick’s last visit to see Anstine was said to be because of personal problems in his life. He wanted to get out of Kansas City for awhile. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hardwick was said to have taken a Greyhound bus from Kansas City, Missouri, to Hutchinson to visit Anstine.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Loftis told the jury that Anstine had dropped off Hardwick at the compound with a set of keys. Hardwick was said to have permission to drive Anstine’s truck and had those keys as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Anstine then returned shortly after with pizza and beer. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hardwick’s defense by his attorney and by his own testimony, said he began to feel strange or ill after consuming some of the beer and the pizza.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hardwick’s symptoms were described as&nbsp;stomach pains, light-headedness and disorientation. Hardwick was said to have voiced his sudden illness to Anstine and then went to the camper on the property where he passed out. Hardwick did not remember passing out in the camper. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hardwick alleged he woke up the next day, still disoriented, face down on a bed in the camper with his pants down, and a pain in his anus.&nbsp;

He said he&nbsp;surmised he was raped.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Upon leaving the camper to search for Anstine out of concern, Hardwick returned to the camper. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Anstine is said to have returned to the compound with a shotgun in his hands. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hardwick said he&nbsp;tried to tell Anstine of his situation, but became suspicious when Anstine was said to have been dismissive. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

When Hardwick then accused Anstine of raping him, Anstine cocked and aimed his shotgun at Hardwick.&nbsp;

Hardwick said he wrestled the shotgun out of Anstine’s hands. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Anstine was said to have then pulled a .380 semiautomatic pistol and pointed it at Hardwick, causing Hardwick to fatally shoot him with the shotgun. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Still disoriented from the prior drugging and rape, the defense said that Hardwick then made his way to the pumphouse, north of the camper, for water. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Loftis described to the jury what happened next as, “one of the real tragedies of this case.” &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Another man, unknown to Hardwick, appeared and shot at Hardwick. Hardwick shot back with the shotgun he had taken from Anstine, striking the second man. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

After a while, determining the man was dead, Hardwick approached the body and searched the man and discovered his identity as Ed&nbsp;Bates. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Loftis said, more than likely, Bates was not part of Hardwick’s alleged rape, and only came to aid his friend, Anstine. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The state, consisting of District Attorney (DA) Thomas Stanton and Deputy District Attorney Andrew Davidson, called a number of witnesses, including friends of the victims, forensic analysts with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), and Sherry Reed herself, who corroborated the state’s opening statement that accused Hardwick of killing the pair for different reasons. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The KBI’s testimony mostly addressed the recovery and forensic testing of a red&nbsp;truck, which belonged to Phil Anstine, which was found at Pretty Prairie Road and Victory Road in October 2021. &nbsp;

Hardwick’s DNA was found on multiple places on the truck as well as on items of evidence found in the truck. &nbsp;

Sherry Reed was the key witness of the trial, having turned in numerous evidence to the Reno County Sheriff’s Office.&nbsp;

During his testimony, Chase Mattingly, the boyfriend of Sherry Reed’s daughter, said he overheard part of a phone conversation between Hardwick and Reed on Aug. 31,&nbsp;2021. &nbsp;&nbsp;

He only understood part of the conversation, and said he heard Hardwick tell Reed he had messed up. &nbsp;&nbsp;

During cross-examination by the defense, Mattingly said he did not know what Hardwick was referring to at the time. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Hardwick’s&nbsp;additional count of solicitation to commit perjury stems from&nbsp;a FaceTime call between the defendant and Reed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The FaceTime call had been played in court prior when Hardwick was bound over in June 2022 and was played again on Jan. 27. &nbsp;&nbsp;

In the recorded FaceTime conversation, Hardwick repeatedly tells Reed not to show up for the hearing and, if she did testify, to tell the court she was mentally unstable and on drugs. At one time he said, “Please don’t come,” and repeatedly said, “you don’t have to show up.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hardwick was also noted as telling Reed to “just tell the truth.” &nbsp;&nbsp;

Hardwick is also quoted to have said that “Phil was a friend and he dropped like a martyr.”&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Reed grew to become inconsistent with her testimony, claiming to not remember things she said even when her prior testimonies were presented to her. &nbsp;

Brought up during the case, Hardwick was said to have told Reed he would have to kill his mother. &nbsp;

During his own testimony when cross-examined, Hardwick would also prove inconsistent and become frustrated to the point he would accuse the state of “putting words in his mouth.” &nbsp;

Hardwick also told the jury he had thoughts of suicide when he arrived to Hutchinson. &nbsp;

The presentation of evidence concluded on Feb. 1. &nbsp;

It was determined that Hardwick was stealing various guns, ammunition, and other items when Ed Bates caught him, prompting Hardwick to shoot him and move his body. &nbsp;

Phil Anstine later discovered Hardwick and was killed in an execution style in the burn pit. &nbsp;

Closing statements were made to the jury and the jury began its deliberations, <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/4ab76543-081a-4c03-b2e4-be61806d0e55" target="_blank">reaching one the morning of Feb. 2 at 10:45 a.m.</a> &nbsp;

The jury delivered a verdict of guilty in the case of the State of Kansas v. Kyle V. Hardwick. &nbsp;

Hardwick was convicted of two counts of intentional and premeditated murder in the first degree and one count of theft of property or services, valued at $1,500 to $25,000, along with one count of theft of property or services of a firearm with a value less than $25,000 and a count of solicitation of perjury; testify to material fact in felony proceeding.&nbsp; &nbsp;

During sentencing, two months later, the family and friends of Marion Edward “Ed” Bates and Phillip “Phil” D. Anstine delivered statements to Hardwick. &nbsp;

They informed how Hardwick’s actions had impacted their lives. Many of them implored the court to hand down the maximum punishment. &nbsp;

In the State of Kansas, the burden of proof on the prosecution is extremely high in murder cases and, if there is an element of doubt in a defendant’s&nbsp;guilt, a jury will not be able to reach conviction. &nbsp;

Judge Keith Schroeder reminded the jury and the gallery of this throughout the case. &nbsp;

When sentencing Hardwick, Judge Schroeder made note of the lack of sympathy from Hardwick for his actions, and that he would return in kind. &nbsp;

Stipulated with Hardwick’s life convictions, he will not receive good time credit. Additionally, he will be required to register as a violent offender. &nbsp;

Concurrent with his life convictions, Hardwick will serve eight months for his third alternative count of theft and seven months for solicitation of perjury. &nbsp;

Hardwick sentenced to two life terms

STERLING, Kan. — Sterling College will welcome Leah Amico, professional and inspirational speaker&nbsp;on Friday, April 14, for two special events. &nbsp;

Leah Amico has over 20 years of motivational speaking. &nbsp;

Amico will deliver the Chapel message at 10 a.m. in Culbertson Auditorium in Spencer Hall. She will also deliver a message at the Keynote Event at 7:30 p.m. in the Gleason Center on the campus of Sterling College. &nbsp;

At Arizona, she was also honored as a three-time First Team All-American and a three-time First Team Academic All-American for her excellence both on the field and in the classroom. &nbsp;

Greater Hutch said just as they&nbsp;value athletes who commit to play a college sport, the signing day ceremony is designed to honor students who are entering a technical field and emphasize the importance of their career choice.&nbsp;

&nbsp;On the day of the event, high school students, parents, instructors, administration, counselors, industry partners, potential employers, local and government officials will celebrate as students join their peers to commit to their future technical program pathway of choice. &nbsp;

Media is&nbsp;invited to attend to provide media coverage. &nbsp;

The ceremony will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. An employer fair from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. &nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Guardians of the Children (GOC) Salt City chapter’s 13th Annual Kids Day will take place at the Hutchinson Zoo on April 22. &nbsp;

“April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and we have the Kids Day on the last Saturday of the month, and the Hutchinson Zoo lets us have their space,” Karl Kocher, Guardians of the Children president, said. &nbsp;

The day’s fun-filled events will feature hamburgers donated by Tyson and ice cream sponsored by Mel Hambelton Ford. &nbsp;

Kocher said kids will be able to spend a day at the zoo enjoying various games, moon bounces, a cake walk, bike giveaways throughout the day, as well as train rides sponsored by Tom and Dan’s Tire Service.  &nbsp;

Additionally, other than being surrounded by all of the animals Hutchinson Zoo hosts, kids will have the opportunity to meet superheroes. Costumed heroes will be around all day for children to meet. &nbsp;

Live music will also be provided by Pettipaw Country. &nbsp;

Guardians of the Children is a motorcycle club and child advocacy group. &nbsp;

“We have a mission to watch out for child abuse and to educate the public to watch out for it too,” Kocher said. “We serve as advocates, providing strength and stability to families in crisis. We’re here for the abused children.” &nbsp;

Since its inception in 2006, Guardians of the Children strives to create a safer environment for abused and neglected&nbsp;children. &nbsp;

If needed, members will attend court with children. The physical presence of the GOC during such a time, is to assist children in being less intimidated and frightened while testifying against their abuser.&nbsp;

Kocher said the GOC makes itself available at all hours, and will do a number of activities with children to help them feel safe or take their mind off what may be happening. &nbsp;

“If a child calls us in the middle of the night, we’ll hang out with them, talk with them or just make sure they get a good night’s sleep,” Kocher said. “We’re there for support, any time they need us.” &nbsp;

The GOC believes its association as bikers gives unique qualifications to protect children and advocate for their rights, with the ability to call on resources that might not generally be available to the public at large. &nbsp;

“We try to turn them from a victim to a victor,” Kocher said. “We’ll be with them until they’re 18 or until they decide they do not need us any more.” &nbsp;

Kocher said a few of the children the GOC helped grew up and joined the Guardians of the Children. &nbsp;

From victim to victor: Kids Day coming to zoo

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As of Thursday, Reno County was one of the final places in Kansas where you could still get gas for under $3 a gallon, and that is likely to not continue for long.

"We've started to see gas prices again on the rise, fueled by a couple of things," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "First of all is robust demand. Demand seems to be rebounding, as is typical. This time of the year, we start seeing more people out driving as the weather improves, but then there's also an unexpected event that happened in the last few days that caused crude oil prices to rise. On Sunday, OPEC and other major oil producers, including Russia, known as OPEC+, announced a voluntary agreement to slash their output by just over 1 million barrels per day, through the end of 2023."

Average prices as of Thursday were as follows: 

"We've seen oil prices rise about $6 a barrel from where we were a week ago, popping over the $80 mark," Steward said. "That's part of the ongoing equation. Oil prices directly impact the prices we see in gasoline at the pumps."

Over half of the price of a gallon of gas is set by the price of the oil it was made from.

"Traditionally, this is a more high demand season that we're starting to head into," Steward said. " With higher demand, typically, the prices do rise. The summer blend gasoline is coming into the system, which is a little bit more expensive, so adds a few additional cents to the gas price."

The one thing that could lower pump prices is if worldwide demand remains sluggish due to fears of a potential recession.

AAA: Gas prices likely to top $3 and stay there

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week starts Monday, and Hutchinson/Reno County 911 is proud to have a new Director of Emergency Communications, Kevin Irwin.

"I'm actually a transplant out of Michigan," Irwin said. "I worked for a private service up there overseeing a PSAP center for many years and it was time for a move. The opportunity came down here to Hutch, connections were made. It's a great opportunity. I've been in public service now for the better part of 38 years. I'm a licensed paramedic and got to see over the communication centers for the last 12."

Dispatch Supervisor Sabrina Henry explained that where you are is the first thing 911 wants to know when you call.

"We're just going to ask you, what's the location of your emergency?" Henry said. "We're going to get that information and we're going to ask you to repeat that to verify where you are at so that we make sure that we have it correct. We're going to ask your phone number, just in case we get disconnected from you so we can call you back and then we're going to find out what your emergency is. Based on your emergency, we're either going to send law enforcement or fire or EMS. It could be a combination of both, depending on what it is. From there, we're going to ask a series of questions to get all that information, so we can give that out to first responders that are coming to your scene."

Dispatchers are trained to help you keep the person you are helping alive long enough for help to get there. As soon as you give them the address, help is on its way.

"All of our dispatchers are trained in a program, it's emergency medical dispatching," Henry said. "We give instructions, anything from giving CPR, airway management, bleeding control, even how to deliver a baby. It runs the gamut of the medical information that we get and then the instructions that we give. Every dispatcher is trained in that in our department."

911 is lifeline for first responders

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;The Family Community Theatre, also known as the Flag Theatre,&nbsp;will present 'Harvey' on April 20 through 23.&nbsp;

The show follows Elwood P. Dowd and how he insists on including his friend Harvey in all of his sister Veta’s social gatherings. Veta’s trepidations are that Harvey is an imaginary six-and-a- half-foot-tall rabbit.&nbsp;&nbsp;

To avoid future embarrassment for her family, especially for her daughter, Myrtle Mae, Veta decides to have Elwood committed to a sanitarium, only for her to be committed.&nbsp;&nbsp;

What comes next, people will have to purchase tickets to find out.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We like the idea of showing classic shows every once in a while,” Craig Williams, Flag Board of Directors president, said. “This one is one of those considered a classic, and also one often done by community theatre.” &nbsp;

Show Director Wes Bartlett said a classic show like Harvey can be a little intimidating. &nbsp;

“Knowing how many times this has been shown and who the people are who have portrayed these characters, but it’s something that I look forward,” Bartlett said. “I like the show, I’ve seen it at other venues, and I think it will be a great play for the Flag.” &nbsp;

Show times on April 20 through April 22 are at 7:30 p.m., doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Then on April 23 the curtain lifts at 3 p.m., doors opening at 2 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harvey takes minds on the Flag Theatre stage

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Vitality Team of Reno County will now be known as Bike Walk Hutch.

Bike Walk Hutch is a group of engaged citizens passionate about cycling, walking, running, and trails in the Hutchinson and Reno County areas. This group works to promote trail development and supports activities to encourage active living in the county.

The group will also be hosting Bike Walk Hutch Meet-Ups on the Third Tuesday in April through October. The first Meet-Up is scheduled for Tuesday, April 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the Mark Call Respite trailhead in Rice Park (near the Rice Park Shelter Building and parking lot). Meet-Ups are open to the public and the perfect opportunity to learn all about Bike Walk Hutch while enjoying a leisurely bicycle ride or walk. Bike Walk Hutch will also host quarterly&nbsp;meetings to discuss group activities and events, as well as initiatives and messaging around biking and walking in the Hutchinson area. In 2023 these meetings will be held the first Wednesday of the following months: May, August, and November. All meetings will take place at Hutch Rec Downtown, 17 E 1st Ave. at 12 p.m.

Bike Walk Hutch also serves as the host group for the Sand Plum Bicycle Classic and the Second Saturday Cycles in Reno County. This year’s Sand Plum Bicycle Classic will take place June 4, while the first Second Saturday Cycles will take place on May 13.&nbsp;

New name, logo for Bike Walk Hutch

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/365161141568795/" target="_blank">Dirty Hands Book Club</a> and <a href="https://www.crowandcobooks.com/" target="_blank">Crow and Co. Bookstore</a> will be hosting a Art Supply Swap Meet at the Hutchinson Art Center on Saturday, April 8. &nbsp;

This is a great opportunity for people looking to freshen up their art supply stash. &nbsp;

No art supplies will be sold or purchased from this event. &nbsp;

All artists are encouraged to pick items responsibly and to only take what they will use. There will also be an arts and crafts station set up in the Hutchinson Art Center’s classroom for artists to test supplies and practice their skills. &nbsp;

The event is also a great place to meet other artists. &nbsp;

Admission is free, but a donation of $5 per person is encouraged. &nbsp;

Light refreshments will be provided. &nbsp;

The delivery window for art supply donations is Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8&nbsp;from 9 a.m.&nbsp;to 5 p.m. &nbsp;

People can bring their sealed or gently used art supplies to the Hutchinson Art Center. Make sure that the art supplies are in their original packaging, or clearly marked on the outside so that they can be easily identified during the swap meet. &nbsp;

Items accepted include paints, pencils, paper (unmarked), unused erasers, rulers, mixing mediums, canvases, and frames. Bottles and tubes should be over half full. &nbsp;

A limited number of art supply storage containers and mixed media ephemera will be accepted for the Art Supply Swap Meet. 

Things like scrap lumber, broken art supplies, dirty art supplies, or other unsuitable items should not be donated. &nbsp;

The Hutchinson Art Center reserves the right to decline art supply donations for any reason.&nbsp;

The Art Supply Swap Meet will take place at the Hutchinson Art Center located at 405 N. Washington St. from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday.

JACKSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man after a high-speed chase in a reported stolen car.

Just after 11 p.m. April 4, sheriff's deputies were notified of the theft of a 2018 Nissan Sentra from the Casey’s General Store in Hiawatha, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.&nbsp;

Approximately 25 minutes later Jackson County Deputies located the vehicle inside Jackson County where a pursuit ensued from Holton southbound. 

The pursuit ended stopping near 150th Road where the driver identified as 42-year-old Jeffery Erwin Primeaux of Hutchinson, surrendered to deputies and was taken into custody.
