NEWTON, Kan. — A significant water main break beneath railroad tracks has forced the closure of a portion of Main Street in Newton on Monday.
According to the City of Newton, the break was reported by a BNSF employee around 1 a.m. Monday. The break occurred underneath the railroad tracks on Main Street and has affected both city infrastructure and the railroad crossing.
The Newton Water Division is working to repair the damaged water main. Because railroad infrastructure was also affected, City crews and BNSF will work together to complete repairs and safely reopen the area.
Main Street is currently closed near East Third Street and Main Street and at the railroad tracks on Main Street.
City officials expect the affected portion of Main Street to remain closed for the majority of Monday while repairs are underway.
Drivers are being asked to avoid the area and find an alternate route. Officials are also reminding motorists not to drive around barricades placed at the closure.
The City acknowledged that the closure creates a significant disruption along Newton's Main Street and asked residents and motorists for patience while crews complete the work.
Drivers and pedestrians are also asked to give City and BNSF crews plenty of room while repairs are underway.
Additional updates are expected as more information becomes available and a timeline for reopening Main Street is determined.
