Much of Kansas will be dealing with dangerous heat Sunday as temperatures and heat index values climb into the triple digits.
Heat advisories are in effect from noon through 8 p.m. CDT Sunday across portions of central, east-central, south-central and southeast Kansas. Additional advisories cover central, south-central, southwest and west-central portions of the state.
In central and eastern portions of Kansas, heat index values around 105 degrees are expected as high temperatures combine with elevated humidity.
Farther west, forecasters expect actual air temperatures to reach between 105 and 110 degrees. The National Weather Service says the region is experiencing a prolonged period of near-record to record-breaking heat, and additional heat advisories or warnings could be issued on a day-to-day basis.
The combination of extreme temperatures and, in some areas, high humidity can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for people who spend extended periods outdoors.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned locations when possible and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. People should also check on relatives, neighbors and others who may be particularly vulnerable to extreme heat.
Anyone who must work or spend time outdoors should take frequent breaks and limit strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
The heat advisories are scheduled to expire at 8 p.m. CDT Sunday, although forecasters say precautions may be necessary for multiple days as the prolonged stretch of extreme heat continues.
