HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Tickets are on sale for this year’s&nbsp;<a href="https://techinc.org/event/mainstreethops" target="_blank">Main Street Hops for TECH</a>, happening Friday, May 5 in Downtown Hutchinson.&nbsp;

This annual opportunity will allow people to stroll through local&nbsp; businesses and sample a variety of beers from local and regional brewers.&nbsp;

These craft beers will&nbsp;all be carefully paired with hor d’oeuvres from local restaurants.&nbsp;

“The Hops&nbsp;event is an event where we've got about 15 different local Downtown Hutch businesses that open up their doors to&nbsp;provide treats and food and it is all paired with a local beer all provided by a local or regional brewery,” Lacey Mills, TECH Director of Marketing and Foundation Development, said. “We have had a partnership with <a href="https://citybev.biz/" target="_blank">City Beverage</a>, which is a local company here in town, for 17 years actually and they have sponsored both our Brewmasters dinner and our Main Street Hops event.” &nbsp;

According to Mills, 15 different kinds of beer will be featured. &nbsp;

“You’re going to see your IPAs, ambers, you’re also going to see sour beers,&nbsp;and beers that are new to the market as well,” Mills said. “We also tried to do a good job of featuring local breweries, so whether that's our Hutchinson breweries here with <a href="http://www.saltcitybrewing.com/" target="_blank">Salt City</a> or <a href="https://sandhillsbrewing.com/" target="_blank">Sandhills</a>, but you will probably also see some of the breweries that are up in McPherson or in the Wichita market as well.”&nbsp;

The Main Street HOPS for TECH event will raise funds for <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/36eac5b5-4ed9-404c-a977-82f223d5eea2" target="_blank">TECH, a 501(c)(3), and their activities</a>. &nbsp;

“It helps support the variety of programs and services that we provide to the people that we serve,” Mills. “We serve about 220 people here in Reno County who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. This helps provide that with our day service program that supports our art program, residential services, etcetera.” &nbsp;

Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased at the <a href="https://techinc.org/" target="_blank">TECH website</a>.&nbsp;Only 400 tickets are available.&nbsp;

Only those age 21 and over are able to participate. &nbsp;

“This is a really fun night for our community to get out, have a good time with friends, but also to support a great cause and&nbsp;it not only supports Tech and the services that we provide, but they're also getting out and supporting our local Downtown Hutch community as well,” Mills said. &nbsp;

Event check-in will be at the <a href="https://www.techincartgallery.com/" target="_blank">TECH Art Gallery</a> located at 10 E. First Ave. &nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Fire Crews worked into the early morning Saturday fighting a house fire in Careyville. The original call came in at 11:35 p.m. Friday.

The fire was in the 1700 block of Carey Boulevard. First arriving crews found smoke showing from the front door and fire out the side door of the garage. No one was found inside. Once the fire was knocked down, crews cleaned up in the garage and kitchen area. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

The extent of damage is not known at this time. Due to the wind, all crews were dispatched for the fire.

Hutch firefighters fight wind-driven fire

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Human Relations Office is holding another networking event on Tuesday for minority business owners, entrepreneurs, and professionals to connect and build relationships. 

This event is open to everyone who is interested in highlighting and celebrating the importance of minority-owned businesses and entrepreneurs in the Hutchinson and Reno County community.

This event is possible thanks to a partnership between the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce and the City of Hutchinson’s Human Relations Office. The NAACP and Scott's Professional Landscape are also sponsoring this month's event.

The event will be held at The Clayworks at 1125 North Main St from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. There is no cost to attend and no reservations are needed! For more information contact Dave Sotelo at (620) 694-2608.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Tickets are sold out for the&nbsp;<a href="https://techinc.org/event/brewmastersdinner/" target="_blank">TECH Brewmaster’s Dinner</a> on April 6 at Prairie Dunes Country Club.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/36eac5b5-4ed9-404c-a977-82f223d5eea2" target="_blank">TECH is a 501(c)(3) that provides services and programs to help adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Reno County to live the fullest lives possible</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Partygoers will enjoy a five-course dinner prepared by Chef Rick Carr, with each course carefully paired with a hand-selected beer from a local or regional brewery.&nbsp;

“This year we created a menu with Chef Rick at Prairie Dunes in partnership with Sandhills Brewery, and Sandhills has&nbsp;picked out a variety of beers for each course,” Lacey Mills, TECH Director of Marketing and Foundation Development, said.&nbsp;“Chef Rick has built that menu around those beers and it's going to be pretty cool because you get to come in and hear the stories from the brewmaster about that specific beer and its profile, but also maybe how it came to be.”&nbsp;

The Brewmaster’s Dinner is a great opportunity to experience hand-selected pairings from area brewmasters and hear from the brewers themselves about their beers. &nbsp;

“It's an interactive dining experience, I would say,” Mills said.&nbsp;

There will also be a small auction. &nbsp;

“But really our evening will be centered around the dining and beer pairing experience,” Mills said. &nbsp;

Only 125 tickets were available for the event.&nbsp;

“We also do this in the fall with our winemakers dinner,” Mills said. “Kind of the same structure, but it features a partnership with the brewery or with the winery.” &nbsp;

TECH Brewmaster's Dinner sold out 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Due to a recent traffic accident, the signal pole at the NE corner of 30th and Halstead has been removed. 

Temporary stop signs have been placed making the intersection a four-way stop, and both eastbound and westbound lanes of 30th have been reduced to single-lane traffic for safety. 

A temporary traffic pole will be installed Monday and normal service to this intersection is anticipated to be restored by April 7.

30th and Halstead now four-way stop

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On Thursday, March 30th, Public Works Water Maintenance crew repaired a water line break in the 400 block of E 17th Ave. 

A second water line break occurred in the 300 block of E 17th Ave. later that morning, causing the closure of E 17th between Maple and Plum. The repair has been complete.

Due to the extent of the road damage, a contractor will be brought in to repair the road. An update will be made when a date for opening the road has been determined.

17th remains closed until road is fixed

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Three USD 308 elementary schools came together for a specialized professional development event for staff on Friday, March 31.&nbsp;

Faris Elementary, Morgan Elementary, and McCandless Leadership Academy, combined forces to host an immersive staff training event called Ed Camp REGULATE. March 31, 2023, was a scheduled professional development day for all USD 308 elementary staff, and leaders of these three schools wanted to create an opportunity for educators to collaborate and learn together.&nbsp;

“Teachers completed a learning needs assessment and we are bringing in outside speakers to present sessions specifically tailored to meet our teachers' needs,” said James Moffett, principal of Faris Elementary.&nbsp;

The event consisted of eight events that staff could choose from throughout the day. As the name of the event suggests, each session focused on a different aspect of regulation. Session topics included self-care, student engagement, time management, and emotional regulation through movement.&nbsp;

“They get to jump in and jump out of sessions, so if it’s not meeting their needs while they’re in there, they can move to the next one. It also mixes them together so they get different perspectives as they are in those sessions,” said McCandless Leadership Academy principal, Cara Schrag.&nbsp;

“There are a lot of veteran teachers here today, so I’m happy to learn what they’ve seen before, and anything I can to expand my teaching game and hopefully pass that on,” said special education teacher Brett Reichert at Faris Elementary.&nbsp;

“We’re hoping staff take the things they signed up for and apply it to their classrooms. We’re hoping they can take these things and recharge and apply what they need for their profession,” said Bryan Cunningham, principal of Morgan Elementary.

Approximately 95 staff members attended the REGULATE event.&nbsp;

TOPEKA, Kan. — A Reno County Health Educator has been appointed to Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly's&nbsp;Behavioral Health Services Planning Council.

Seth Dewey was among four appointments announced Friday for the Council. Its purpose is to advise the Governor on adult, adolescent, and children’s services issues.

The federal government mandates that all states have a mental health services planning and advisory council. The Governor’s Behavioral Health Services Planning Council fulfills that mandate for Kansas. 

The Council is made up of a cross section of mental health consumers, family members of mental health consumers, mental health service providers, state agency staff, and private citizens. 

The Council is actively involved in planning, implementing, monitoring, evaluating, and advising state government regarding Kansas’ mental health services.

Dewey appointed by Governor Friday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas Director of Broadband Development Jade Piros de Carvalho wants to be sure low-income Kansans know of a way to reduce or eliminate their cost for internet service through the Affordable Connectivity Program.

"We are embarking on a robust outreach campaign to help low-income Kansans recognize that this program exists,"&nbsp;Piros de Carvalho said. "This program can reduce the cost of your internet service by $30, or, for some providers who have offered high speed 100 megabit speeds for only $30, you can get it free. This is available to anybody who has household income that falls below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines."

The graphic below represents 100% of the guidelines, so, based on your family size, if you make less than twice these amounts annually, you would likely qualify for ACP.

In other words, a family of four that makes less than $60,000 a year would likely be eligible.

"Additionally, a lot of people aren't aware of this, it also provides a $100 discount on a tablet or a computer,"&nbsp;Piros de Carvalho said. "You could also get a device with this program."

There are many programs like Lifeline, SNAP and Free and Reduced Lunch that have, in some manner, income guidelines already below the 200% of FPL level, so if you qualify for those, you qualify for this.

"If you are trying to access the internet only from your phone, you are probably not as able to apply for a job, or take advantage of telehealth with your health care provider or work remotely or further your education,"&nbsp;Piros de Carvalho said. "That device is just as important as the access."

To sign up for the ACP program, the state has a wizard at&nbsp;<a href="https://getacp.org/kansas">https://getacp.org/kansas </a>that will walk you through some questions to find out if you are eligible.

Broadband director: Low-income Kansans can save on internet

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson is going to sell land it owns in Reno County just west of South Hutchinson, if a real estate agreement is approved Tuesday by the Hutchinson City Council.

According to the agenda documents, a 3.5 acre tract of farm ground is owned by the city immediately north of the combined highways of K96/50/61. This tract of real estate is to the north of the frontage road which leads to the Veterans Memorial and Salt Monument in South Hutchinson. 

The tract was acquired as part of an eminent domain proceeding for the construction of the levee system in the 1950’s. The intended use of this acquired parcel was to provide fill dirt for the levee construction project. 

The City of Hutchinson has not utilized this real estate since it was acquired in 1952.

The real estate parcel to the east of the City’s tract is being sold at an on-line auction by Biglron Realty. Mike Campbell of Biglron Realty contacted the City of Hutchinson to see if there is an interest in selling the City’s 3.5 acre tract along with the remaining 22 acres to the east. 

Sale of the parcels jointly, according to City Attorney Paul Brown, is quite likely to produce a better sales price than if the City’s tract was sold separately.

A proposed Listing Agreement for the on-line auction sale of the City’s tract is part of the agenda documents. The brokerage fee will be Five Percent (5%) with the City receiving a pro rata share of the sales proceeds per acre. The broker would be responsible for the costs of advertising; and the City would have a portion of the costs for title insurance and the closing agent’s fees.

The Hutchinson City Council meets Tuesday at 9 a.m. at City Hall.

Hutch to sell extra land with council approval Tuesday

Wheat farmers are, by nature, optimistic, but that optimism is starting to wane in southwest Kansas, where much of the wheat that was drilled last fall has yet to emerge.

Only 19% of the Kansas wheat crop is currently rated in good to excellent condition, with another 52% rated poor to very poor, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. According to the March 27 report, 77% of subsoil moisture supplies are rated short to very short.

“We’re eating through subsoil moisture,” said Tyler Ediger who farms near Meade, Kansas. “We need a slow inch to inch and a half of moisture.”

Average annual precipitation for the area is 23 inches, but over the past year, they’ve received roughly half that.

Still, Ediger says they’re better off than most in the area, having received a half inch a couple weeks ago. Their fields have a stand, so they’re not blowing yet, but winds have been strong and sustained for much of the area.

North of Lakin in Kearny County, Gary Millershaski’s fields aren’t faring as well. An area that typically gets 18.8” of annual precipitation, they’ve only received 8.6” over the past 365 days. While last year’s crop was also raised in drought conditions, it had the benefit of some subsoil moisture, which has all but been depleted by now. Even the residue left from last year’s crop has been reduced by wind and drought.

“We’re totally out of residue,” Millershaski said. “There’s nothing out there.”

He said insurance adjusters will be in the area over the next couple weeks. Many of the fields that haven’t even emerged will be adjusted out, giving farmers like Millershaski few options for ways to protect the blowing soil.

“I’m not going to chase another crop in dry soil,” he said. “Right now, it’s all about getting by and spending the least amount possible.”

In Sheridan County, Brett Oelke’s fields are surviving on half their average precipitation over the past two years as well.

“We’re pretty fortunate right now,” he said, because the moisture on this wheat crop has come with a timely three-quarters of an inch of rain in October when it was drilled and another inch and a half of moisture from snow since January.

Oelke’s moisture probe proved that even though his area has gotten some timely moisture, the crop is far from trouble. Reaching only two feet down, he said last year’s subsoil moisture was four feet.

“We’re 22 to 24 inches behind over the past few years,” he said.

In the sandy soils of Barber County, farmers are also dealing with less than half their average moisture.

“We need a rain really bad — and soon,” Chris Boyd said.

The wheat plants are small and don’t have many tillers. Fields in the Isabel area have received only one inch of rain total since the crop was planted.

In addition to fields that have been blown out completely from strong winds, they are also dealing with winter grain mites and army cut worms, which will limit yield potential. These pests can be controlled by applying an insecticide or pesticide, an added expense for a crop without a lot of potential.

“We were blessed with a nice harvest last year, but that crop used all of the subsoil moisture,” Boyd said. “With virtually no moisture on this current crop and nothing in the forecast, producers are faced with difficult decisions on how many more inputs — such as insecticide for grain mites — to invest on a potential crop failure.”

Rain is critical right now as temperatures begin to warm up and the wheat crop comes out of dormancy.

“We’ll take whatever moisture we can get,” said Millershaski.

With hit and miss showers mostly avoiding so﻿uthwest Kansas this past week and few scattered showers forecast in the next 10 days, farmers remain hopeful for additional timely rains.

“We’ll stay optimistic,” Ediger said.

Extended drought leads to waning optimism on potential of Kansas wheat crop

Reno County remains in a Wind Advisory until 7 p.m. Friday. Gusts up to 55 mph expected. Winds will be strongest Friday over portions of central, south central and southwest Kansas. Portions of the state to the east are under a High Wind Warning starting at 1 p.m. Friday.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree  limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.

Also, a Red Flag Warning is in effect for a&nbsp;particularly dangerous situation, which is in effect from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. CDT Friday.&nbsp;

Extreme Grassland Fire Danger is forecast. This is a particularly dangerous situation for mainly south-central and  southeast Kansas.

Winds will be from the West 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph, and strongest  over south-central and southeast Kansas.

Relative Humidity on Friday will be as low as 11 percent in spots and lowest over southern  Kansas.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly  and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not  recommended.

A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

Wind Advisory and Red Flag Warning Friday

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The winners of last weekend’s Kansas KidWind State Finals are now gearing up for their next challenge – the National KidWind Challenge scheduled for May 14-17 in Boulder, Colorado.&nbsp; To qualify for the national competition, teams first had to capture one of the top two spots in their age division during regional competitions, then win one of the top three spots in their age group at the State Finals.

The winning teams representing Kansas are:

1st&nbsp;place - Hutch STEM Blue – Allen STEM Magnet School – USD 308&nbsp; Coaches: Tara Urban and Jes Brockleman&nbsp; Team Members: Dalton Urban, Liam Clark, Zoey Schletzbaum, and Gatlin Loepp

To prepare for competition in the KidWind Challenge, team members work together to design, build and test a wind turbine using the materials of their choice. At each level of competition (regional, state and national), turbines are put to the test in a 48" × 48" wind tunnel at a wind speed of approximately 3.5-5 m/s (meters per second). Scoring is based on turbine performance and efficiency, a knowledge quiz, an instant challenge, and a presentation to judges where the team explains its design process.

Last year, three Kansas teams earned honors at the National KidWind Challenge. Hutch STEM Blue from STEM Magnet School at Allen Elementary was named Elementary Division National Champions, Wind Chill from Dighton Middle School won the Innovator Award and Gerald La Turbina from Beloit Jr/Sr High School won the Judges Award.

KidWind is an Energy Education Event from the Kansas Corporation Commission and K-State Engineering Extension made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The goal is to help students learn key concepts around science, technology, engineering, and math in fun and engaging ways. The KidWind program actively engages students. It teaches not only STEM skills, but also promotes teamwork, problem solving and public speaking.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — According to a social media post, the Kansas State Fair is looking for local Vrbos, Airbnbs, or home rentals within a five-mile radius of Hutchinson to help accommodate a few Fair guests prior to and during the Kansas State Fair, Sept. 8-17, 2023.

During the NJCAA Men's Tournament earlier in March, according to a previous conversation with Visit Hutch's LeAnn Cox, nine of the 24 teams playing had to be booked in hotels outside of Hutchinson.

State Fair looking for guest housing

RENO COUNTY, Kan. — Hutch Post has been in correspondence with the Easter Bunny on where he is going to be leaving eggs. &nbsp;

Clothed in Compassion will host a Sensory-Safe Easter Egg Hunt on April 1.&nbsp;

Each child will get an opportunity to find 12 eggs, hidden either in the sensory gym or outside in the front lawn of Oz Chiropractic. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.&nbsp;

Nickerson Chamber of Commerce Annual Easter Egg Hunt will begin at 10 a.m. on April 1 at Weber Park. &nbsp;

Each age category will have a chance to have to enter their name to win a filled Easter basket.&nbsp; There will also be opportunities for kids to take pictures with the Easter Bunny. &nbsp;

Buhler’s Annual&nbsp;Easter Egg Hunt will take place at the baseball diamonds at Wheatland Park at 10 a.m. on April 1. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The Easter Egg Hunt is for kids from first to sixth grade. &nbsp;

It is said there will be over 3,000 eggs out there.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Easter Egg Hunt is sponsored by the&nbsp;Buhler Chamber of Commerce.&nbsp;

There will be another Easter Egg Hunt at the Knights of Columbus in Hutchinson located at&nbsp;1200 W. 15th Ave. starting at 1 p.m. on April 2. This is their annual Easter Egg Hunt. &nbsp;

First Southern Baptist Church located at 1201 E. 23 St. in Hutchinson will host an Easter Egg Hunt and Hamburger Fry on April 2 at&nbsp;4 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The 6th Annual Harvey County Parks Free Easter Egg Hunt at Camp Hawk is on Sunday April 2. &nbsp;

Registration starts at 1 p.m. The Easter Egg Hunt will start promptly at 2 p.m. People are advised to&nbsp;bring their&nbsp;own baskets.&nbsp;

There will be prizes for the whole family. &nbsp;

The event is sponsored by Harvey County Parks and Heartland Credit Union. &nbsp;

Join Downtown Hutch as they celebrate Easter on April 8 with a kids Egg Hunt at George Pyle Park located at 118 S. Poplar Street beginning at 9 a.m. &nbsp;

There will be two&nbsp;hunts starting at 9 a.m., one for littles and one for older kids. Areas will be designated upon arrival.&nbsp;

People can also hop on down to the Salt City Cowboy Church Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 8 at 2 p.m. at Voss Park in South Hutchinson.&nbsp;&nbsp;
