MANHATTAN — Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) has purchased&nbsp;<a href="https://kfb.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=45bba928f411d21617c5eadbe&amp;id=46289c584c&amp;e=3213e3277a" target="_blank">Shop Kansas Farms&nbsp;</a>(SKF), an online community that connects consumers with Kansas farmers and ranchers.&nbsp; “Kansas Farm Bureau is excited about this partnership and what it means to current and future users of Shop Kansas Farms,” Terry Holdren, CEO of Kansas Farm Bureau, says. “Shop Kansas Farms was born during COVID-19 shutdowns by Farm Bureau member Rick McNary and has continued to provide a way for consumers and farmers to connect over food and farming. Together, with Rick, we plan to build the platform out and help communities create local food systems.” McNary will remain a driving force behind SKF and will focus on things like consulting with communities who want to develop local food systems. “Kansas Farm Bureau has been instrumental in the success of Shop Kansas Farms from the beginning,” Rick McNary, creator of Shop Kansas Farms, says. “Staff provided help as administrators on the Facebook group and were sounding boards as the viral community took off. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County taxpayers can now get their questions answered at a new kiosk in the outer lobby of the Reno County Annex.&nbsp; 

The kiosk has information about all departments located in the annex and can be very helpful in reviewing items required by the various departments.&nbsp; 

If you want to know what paperwork it takes to title a vehicle, or need to know who to contact regarding the sale of your property or need information about recording a deed?&nbsp; These and many more questions can be answered by using the kiosk.

This Friday, September 30th&nbsp;and next Friday October 7th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., come by to see the new kiosk and have a bag of popcorn as staff at the annex will be there to show you how it works.

New customer kiosk to help with common County Annex questions

NEWTON, Kan. — The Newton City Commission approved the annexation of a property that houses Full Vision Inc. as the company prepares for a major expansion.

The company had requested annexation by the city so that it can utilize city sewer service.

The city commission also approved an engineering agreement with PEC for design of the sewer extension that will serve Full Vision and assigned the newly-annexed property an I-2 industrial zoning classification.

The Newton-based metal fabrication company is planning a $7 million expansion that will add 35,000 square feet to its main manufacturing facility. Company President Doug Scheible said Full Vision has seen significant growth in the past five years and is now out of space in its current facilities.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson YMCA is hosting Saturday Night at the Y starting Oct. 8. This event will take place on the second Saturday of each month and goes from 6-9 p.m. at the Y, 716 E. 13th Ave. The event is open to all middle school students from Hutchinson, Buhler and Nickerson.

After normal business hours, the Y will open its doors to area 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, where they can play basketball in the gym, work out, swim and more. The program is free to all middle schoolers. A Y membership is not required.&nbsp;

Hutchinson 'Y' offering free middle school access

Two Hutchinson organizations have been awarded more than $140,000 in grants to provide services for victims of crime, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced on Wednesday.

The grants were awarded to support&nbsp;the&nbsp;following programs:

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;BrightHouse, Inc.,&nbsp;$65,912 to provide a secure and controlled environment in which supervised family visits and monitored child exchanges may occur.&nbsp;

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;BrightHouse, Inc.,&nbsp;$47,778 to provide victim-centered, trauma informed domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy services.&nbsp;

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Horizons Mental Health Center,&nbsp;$22,411 to provide services for victims of crime and teach prevention skills for children in school that are vulnerable to abuse or maltreatment.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Horizons Mental Health Center,&nbsp;$4,000&nbsp;for operating expenditures for children’s advocacy centers.

“Organizations across Kansas do great work every day to support victims of crime,” Schmidt said. “We are proud to support these organizations through the victim services grant programs.”

The awards were made from the Protection from Abuse Fund, the State Child Exchange and Visitation Centers Fund, the State Crime Victims’ Assistance Fund and the Children’s Advocacy Centers Fund. 

The Protection from Abuse Fund is funded by State General Fund appropriations, marriage license fees, county court costs and municipal court assessments. The State Child Exchange and Visitation Centers Fund is funded through marriage license fees and State General Fund appropriations. 

The State Crime Victims’ Assistance Fund is funded though the remittance of applicable fines, penalties and forfeitures from clerks of the district courts. 

The Children’s Advocacy Centers Fund is funded though the remittance of applicable fines, penalties and forfeitures from clerks of the district courts.

This year, the attorney general’s office awarded more than $2.5 million in grants to local and state crime victim assistance organizations. Flown from 1964-1990, they were used for reconnaissance and for engineering and flight tests. In 1995, Hutchinson residents watched as an entire addition to the Cosmosphere was constructed around a flown SR-71.

Pilots, crew, and mechanics who worked in the SR-71 program occupy a unique position in U.S. military and engineering history, as the SR-71 remains the world’s fastest manned air-breathing jet. October 14-15, the public is invited to meet SR-71 crew members and hear their stories about the Blackbird.

Festivities begin with a meet and greet in Cosmosphere’s Grand Lobby under the SR-71 on Friday, October 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 

On Saturday, October 15, Cosmosphere offers a full day of activities that include intimate panel presentations with SR-71 experts and a book signing with SR-71 Instructor Pilot, Squadron Commander, Wing Commander and Author, Col. Richard Graham.

Graham’s hardcover,&nbsp;The Complete Book of the SR-71 Blackbird, contains over 400 photos and is available now, along with unique SR-71 gifts, patches, and memorabilia in the Cosmosphere gift shop.

The Cosmosphere will be closing early at 3 p.m. on Oct. 15 to prepare for a private event. The hours of operation that day will be 9:00 a.m.&nbsp; to 3:00 p.m.

On
Tuesday, members of the Hutchinson Police Department Special
Operations and Investigations Bureau completed an investigation into
a juvenile sex offense. Two arrests were made in reference to the
investigation.

Fifty-seven-year-old Mark E. Rank of Belle Plaine, KS was&nbsp;arrested for (1) Electronic
Solicitation; Believes the child to be 14-15 YOA, and (2) Indecent
Solicitation of a Child.

Also arrested was 61-year-old Margaret
A. Myrick of Belle Plaine, KS for (1) Conspiracy to
Commit Indecent Solicitation of a Child. 


All
suspects are considered innocent until found guilty in a court of
law.

The
Hutchinson Police Department is asking anyone who is aware of illegal

Two arrested on sex offense by Hutchinson PD

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson church is hosting the only Kansas simulcast site for the Legacy Grandparenting Summit 2022 coming up in October.

"We had the opportunity to combine a family trip and a business trip, if you will, to Birmingham, Alabama, to attend the Legacy Coalition Grandparents Summit last fall," said Ken Johnson.

Grandparents from across Kansas are being invited to the site for the two-day event.

"The live event is actually in Florida this year," said Carolyn Johnson. "We are doing a simulcast on October 21st and 22nd at Hutchinson First Church of the Nazarene."

The event is about helping grandparents relate even with the changes that continue to happen in technology and in the culture at large.

"They talked a lot about ways that you can pass along your spiritual legacy to your grandchildren," Carolyn Johnson said. "Specifically, how to deal with cultural issues that children face today. How to deal with children that spend a lot of time on their screens. How to just give grace to your grandchildren. Basically, just developing a really rich and fulfilling relationship with your grandchildren as they grow."

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Kutter's Furniture is the Market South Hutch Business of the Month. Craig Clinton, Vice President at Kutter's Furniture said he has learned to love the business.

"It's nothing I intended on doing," Clinton said. "Once I graduated from college, I moved out here, was engaged with my wife and started this out as being an internship until she graduated. They kind of roped me in for the long term. I really do enjoy it. It's been very good."

It's not just a family thing for the owners, now it's become one for the customers, as well.

"We've been here long enough now that we see people's kids coming in with their parents, saying our parents bought everything from you guys," Clinton said. "This is where they told us to go."

Kutter's doesn't play the traditional mark up and then discount game you might see at other furniture stores.

"What we have been known for a long time is our pricing," Clinton said. "Whether you shop locally, or Wichita, or surrounding areas, you'll always find the best, lowest price here. We do that from an efficiency standpoint and the way we buy and just our overall concept. We don't play a lot of games with our pricing. We're not up here and then one week down lower and then in the middle and all that. First time I bring it in, I put our very best price on, first time around. We don't negotiate pricing, because we're already at our very best pricing."

"We're a family owned company," Clinton said. "We look long term. We don't look just short term. We take care of the customer, because we know we're going to rely on their business in the future."

YODER, Kan. — Yoder Charter School is continuing to expand its agricultural projects for its K-8 students in Haven USD 312.

"We finished up last year piloting our agricultural program at Yoder Charter and had our meat chickens, with a very well attended chicken dinner," said principal Shannon Atherton. "We have started this semester, this school year, with pigs. We've got a couple of pigs on the grounds. We got them last week. They're just frolicking around and kids are loving it and really starting to do some learning about pigs."

The school is also going to continue to work with chickens.

"We'll do some egg layers," Atherton said. "We've got a chicken coop and we just actually got our hands on a trailer. We'll modify that to make a coop out of, that we can have kind of a mobile coop around our back area and then we'll have some meat chickens here in the spring, as well, just like we did last year."

Project based learning for kids is an opportunity the community of Yoder has embraced.

"The root of it is problem solving," Atherton said. "Just yesterday, I went out to the pig shelter and back behind it, there was some loose ground and they're starting to root underneath and I could see, kind of a hoof coming out underneath there. I went to the sixth, seventh and eighth graders and I said, hey, we need to problem solve how to make sure these pigs don't get out."

Yoder Engineered Structures worked with students to build the shelter, and a Corteva Agriscience grant is being put to work, as students will be taking care of and learning about the two pigs through March.

Benefit polka concert for mfc Oct. 29

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The resolution proposed by Reno County commissioners to have the public vote on changes to the current liquor by the drink regulations has the support of the Chamber of Commerce.

During Tuesday’s agenda session, LeAnn Cox with the Chamber spoke in favor of putting the question to abolish the 30% food rule for businesses wanting to sell alcohol, up to a vote.

“We want to reinforce that the Chamber of Commerce supports small businesses, and putting this opportunity on the ballot will give the voters of Reno County the chance to continue to demonstrate that we are a pro-business community,” Cox said. “We felt like the community of Hutchinson has spoken loudly in its support of this issue by the response received in the last few weeks at Sandhills.”

Cox says that microbreweries and similar businesses are growing in Kansas.

“A growing number of breweries and distilleries are opening up throughout the state, catering to those in search of a unique experience,” Cox said. “Breweries create a really cool tourism aspect to out-of-towners as people travel throughout the state to see breweries and leave their dollars behind.”

The Chamber is joined in its support of the requested change by Jackson Swearer of StartUp Hutch.

“I think it’s important that we have a good environment for our small businesses to operate,” Swearer said. “I think this is an instance where it is at least worth considering the question and putting that up to a public vote.”

Swearer told the commission an excerpt from a report compiled by the Kansas Sampler Foundation in regard to how small towns can thrive.

“The report states that a small town’s approach to businesses in the town can be a deciding factor on young people on whether to live there,” Swearer said. “New and small businesses are essential to the economy of rural communities. For young entrepreneurs, the right ingredients can make a big difference to start or grow a business.”

Swearer says success of small business is necessary to keep a community thriving and the greatest success comes from entertaining new ideas.

The commission hopes to have a resolution to go over at a future meeting and would have to pass proposed language before sending it to a vote.

Brewfest takes place from 2-6 p.m. in front of Hutch Rec Downtown on First Avenue. Participants will enjoy craft beer samples from Kansas breweries. Brewfest coming up Saturday afternoon

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The preliminary hearing for a Hutchinson man facing numerous counts of inappropriate contact with children has been continued in Reno County District Court.&nbsp;

Thirty-five-year-old Wayne Willard is charged with 10 counts of rape of a child under the age of 14. Each count carries a mandatory 50 years in prison. He’s also charged with rape by force, which carries a possible sentence of 12 to 54 years, and an alternative count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child. He was arrested by law enforcement back in April of this year.

The request to delay the hearing was at the request of the defense, which stated it did not have all of the discovery of evidence needed to proceed. The motion was granted by Judge Joe McCarville and the hearing is now set for Monday, Oct. 24.

There was also a motion to address Willard's bond, which is currently at $1 million. The defense requested the bond be lowered to where Willard could be out and support his family, but the state objected to any reduction, noting Willard does have a past incident similar to what he is charged with now, and with numerous possible counts against him, the bond was deemed appropriate.&nbsp;

Judge McCarville agreed and kept the bond where it is.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Commissioners have approved the first steps that could bring a vote on liquor by the drink back before voters as soon as next year.&nbsp;

During Tuesday's meeting, the commission approved having a resolution drawn up that would bring the proposal to remove the required 30% food sales requirement for liquor by the drink.

The proposal comes less than a week after the county commission and staff learned that Sandhills Brewery had an issue with their liquor license as they, at that time, had not sold enough food to maintain compliance.&nbsp; Pippin Williamson, owner of Sandhills was before the commission requesting the vote.

“I would like to see this out on the ballot and allow the people of Hutchinson to vote on it,” Williamson said. “I don’t believe that any business, be it my own, or any other that wishes to include a liquor license as part of their business strategy, should be required to go through this.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The commission was in agreement that the matter should be addressed.

“In talking to Pippin, talking to at least one legislator, generally nobody understands why this even exists,” Commission Chair Daniel Friesen said. “I think this law was misplaced originally and that certainly is not our place to determine, but it looks like we can ask the public if they feel the same way.”

Three years ago, Williamson was before the county commission expressing the same concerns and asking for the change. At that time, the board asked him to collect enough signatures on a petition to bring the matter up for a vote. Williamson stated then that he didn’t have the time nor the manpower to do that and so the matter died at the time. Commissioner Ron Hirst noted that he’d prefer that process this time around too.

“I think that three years ago we had an alternative, and that alternative has worked before,” Hirst said. “That’s to give an opportunity to bring forth to the commission a definite reason to put this on a ballot.”

County Counselor Patrick Hoffman noted that if all goes well, the earliest the matter could go on the ballot would be in 2023.

Resolution sought by Reno County Commission on liquor by the drink

RENO COUNTY — A North Carolina semi driver rolled his truck and trailer Tuesday morning in Langdon. 

According to the Reno County Sheriff's Office, around 6 a.m. 57-year-old Raymond Gonzalez from Randleman, North Carolina, was&nbsp;traveling northeast on K-61 and as he entered Langdon, his truck and trailer left the road and entered the south ditch. Gonzalez tried to get the semi back on the road, but overcorrected and the&nbsp;semi-truck and trailer overturned on its passenger side sliding into the North side of K-61.

Gonzalez had minor cuts and scrapes and refused medical treatment. Auto House removed the semi truck and trailer from the scene.

The highway was partially blocked for about three hours.

RENO COUNTY — Deputies with the Reno County Sheriff’s Office are currently working a one vehicle semi accident at K-61 Highway and Langdon Road near the city of Langdon. 

 Currently, one lane is completely blocked and the highway will likely be shut down temporarily while the truck is removed.  KDOT is headed to assist the Sheriff’s Office with traffic control on the highway. 

 This accident may impact morning travel including students to Fairfield High School.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Commissioners have approved the first major change in water and sewer rates around the Yoder area since the 1990s. The fees will be used to offset costs associated with daily operations and to build savings for future projects as needed. It also deals with nitrate problems connected to the rural 101 water district. Fees will be going up in rural sewer district 201,202 and district 1. Fees will also go up in rural water district 101.

Water rates in the 101 district will go up to $34 per month and $2.50 for every 1,000 gallons used. There will also be a $500 connection charge.

For the sewer district, rates will go up to $30 per month for each residential connection, $37 per month for a light commercial connection, and $138 per month for commercial and industrial connections. There will also be a $500 new connection charge. There was some discussion about some of the major sewer users such as the law enforcement training center and how it could be better monitored for its usage. Public Works Director Don Brittain said that they will consider placing meters on some of the major users of the sewer districts in the future, but for now the flat rate is in place to generate funds.

Public Works also told the commission the rates will increase the flat rate by 2% each year unless additional action is taken by the county commission. The increases are necessary to keep the rural districts running. Most of the changes came to light after Rural Water District 101's water became unusable by those with infants due to high nitrate levels.&nbsp;

The county is currently working with the City of Hutchinson to bring water to the area. No official cost has been set for bringing water to the 101 district as of Tuesday's meeting, but Brittain says engineers are working on putting it together.

County Commission approves water and sewer rate hikes

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Pieter Miller with the Hutchinson Airport told Hutch Post Tuesday they are going to apply again for federal dollars to get the air traffic control tower replaced.

"There was money specifically set aside to update federal contract control towers," Miller said. "Towers that were built by the federal government back in the 1950s and the 1960s that are staffed by private companies, which is exactly what Hutchinson has."

The current tower was built in 1951. This would be the second application for that money. Their first try was to do the project in phases, but they noted that the ones approved in the first round were full projects, so they are going to try that approach when they apply again. That application is due by the end of October. The internal workings in the tower are updated by the contractor and the FAA, but the actual bricks and mortar are city property.

"Most of the buttons and switches and radios in the tower now have been updated over the last 10 years," Miller said. "What is old is the actual facility itself. The stairways, the access, the break rooms, the restrooms, all the accoutrements that the controllers use to get their job done."

The tower has been staffed by a private contractor since 1992.

"They are in operation from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, 365 days a year," Miller said. "A couple of the controllers live in Wichita. Most of them are local controllers here, or retired FAA controllers. The company they work for is called Midwest ATC."

Midwest ATC is currently operating nearly 100 air traffic control towers globally. In addition to Hutchinson, they operate towers in Garden City, Salina, Manhattan, both airports in Topeka and the Johnson County Aircenter and New Century Airport in the Kansas City area.

Hutchinson Airport to seek control tower replacement

On June 28, the commissioners took actions to allocate the funds to specific agencies. At the June meeting, commissioners discussed having a spreadsheet provided to them in a more formal manner for their approval. Three major allocations were approved in separate motions with the rest approved in one motion. The three major allocations included $4.5 million for the United Way K-Ready Childcare program, $4 million for Interfaith Housing and another $500,000 for the South Central Kansas Economic Development District for housing needs and, finally, $1.2 million for the Chamber of Commerce for an industrial development park.&nbsp;

Busy day for Reno County Commission Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson will hold a public hearing on Oct. 4 at 9 a.m. in City Hall to present and discuss alternatives and the proposed improvements for the wastewater collection system, the wastewater treatment plant, and the water distribution system. The improvements will be funded under the low interest State Revolving Loan Fund Program through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The loan applications will include funding for the following improvements:

1. Sewer collection system improvements consisting of the replacement of self-priming wet-well mounted pumps and related accessories with submersible non-clog pumps. Buried valve vaults, including sump pits. Coating of new and existing structures in contact with wastewater and/or corrosive gases. Bypass connections after the valve vaults, receptacles and manual transfer switches for operation from a portable generator, ultrasonic level indicators and grease control by mixed-flush or wet-well cleaning control systems. The anticipated amount for the collection system improvements will be $2,750,000.

2. Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements consisting of headworks grit removal equipment replacement with an estimated amount of $820,000.

3. Water distribution system improvements consisting of the replacement of approximately 1.3 miles of 6-inch cast iron waterline in various locations, generally bound between K-61 and Town/1st and 9th with an estimated amount of $1,205,000.

The proposed alternatives and improvements will be explained and comments by the public will be considered. Oral and written comments will be accepted. Any written comments will become a part of the city’s record of public hearing.

Public hearing scheduled for Hutchinson waste water system

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A popular drinking establishment in Hutchinson made their food sales goal to meet state statute.

According to Sandhills Brewing Company, they sold&nbsp;around $40,000 of food in five days to clear the 30% food sales requirement to allow for the renewal of their drinking establishment license before it expires in October.

Owners believed they needed to hit 30% of gross alcohol sales. They actually needed to hit 30% of the combined sales of food and alcohol and they did it.

Pippin Williamson updated the community at the brewery over the weekend.

"What did I tell you we had sold in 12 months prior? $22,000 of food, in an entire year. We're not a restaurant. We don't have a kitchen. We have this thing we call a kitchenette. Fun little fact, it actually used to be a bathroom."

Williamson said the community came out in force and not only bought food and beer, but they left him speechless with their willingness to help wherever they were needed.

"We put together a Hail Mary plan," Williamson said. "We pulled out a grill. We pulled out tables and a tent in the rain and smokers and a whole lot of volunteers and hours and we have served, I don't have all the stats on here, but over 1,050 pizzas in five days, 494 bags of beef jerky that are, by the way, all being donated 100% to schools or non-profits or food banks. We have sold over 2,000 pints of beer at $1."

That's over 48 5 gallon kegs worth of beer in just five days.&nbsp;

"We don't know how many people have come out in the last five days," Williamson said. "We know it's in the thousands. There have been so many new faces here that we have never, ever seen and that, I'll be honest, I don't even know where you all came from, but it is an amazing testament to the community here."

Sandhills is closed for the rest of the work week to get their small staff that pulled off the Hail Mary some well-deserved rest. They will reopen Saturday, October 1st at noon.
