KDOT announces approved March bids

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jackson Swearer with StartUp Hutch said that the results of the 2022 Economic Impact Survey compiled by StartUp Hutch are positive, in his view.

"We use those results to guide our work to some extent," Swearer said. "We also share some of that information with our local public funding partners who help to support StartUp Hutch in our operations. That helps us to show the impact that our organization and local entrepreneurs and small businesses are having on our economy."

The best measures are how much money are you making and did you need more people to get the work done?

"The main questions that we ask are we ask for people's revenues and we also ask for some jobs numbers, including what their past jobs numbers were and current. We're trying to measure job growth. We did see that among the 21 respondents to our survey, which represents mostly folks who have borrowed some funds from us, but also just some people who I meet with throughout the year, they had a little under $10 million in total revenue and employed 233 people with 20 new jobs being created last year."

It's not that these businesses don't have challenges, though.

"We also ask people about what obstacles they are facing in business right now," Swearer said. "A lot of people referenced struggles with staffing and struggles with financing. I think the higher interest rate environment and low unemployment rate, small labor pool is affecting some of our local businesses, as well. Despite those headwinds, we are really seeing a lot of great economic activity in our small business community. I think that's something to celebrate."

Swearer: Despite economic headwinds, small business doing well

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a Red Flag Warning for Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Extreme Grassland Fire Danger is forecast.

Winds will be from the Southwest 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph.

Relative Humidity will be as low as 9 percent in spots.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly  and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not  recommended.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

Also, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. this afternoon to 1 a.m. Wednesday.&nbsp;

Southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph are  expected.

Gusty winds could blow around light weight unsecured  objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power  outages may result.

Winds will create areas of blowing dust, which will likely cause visibility reductions at times.

Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.

Red Flag Warning, Wind Advisory in effect for Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — HEELO Inc. CEO and founder Shontina Tipton announced a fundraiser April 11 for the 2023 Juneteenth events.

That fundraiser will be at Spangles at 120 East 4th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. that evening.

Twenty percent of all food and drink sales and 100% of all counter donations will support this year's Juneteenth activities through HEELO Inc.

In 2022, the Juneteenth pancake feed served 150 community members and their families, the car show had 20 entrants and raised $350 for the Edward L. 'Eddie' Tipton Minority Scholarship Endowment at HutchCC. 

Also, there was a blood drive, a movie, a domino and spades tournament and music by the George Sander Band.

HEELO Inc. joining Spangles for Juneteenth fundraiser

MCPHERSON, Kan. — A vision, 10 years in the making, has come true for students, alumni, and employees of the McPherson College Automotive Restoration program — the only four-year bachelor’s degree program for automotive restoration in the nation. The 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300 S Cabriolet, entirely restored by students, has been accepted by the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and will be shown there on August 20.

“Congratulations&nbsp;to the McPherson College students for having their car accepted to Pebble Beach,” said comedian and car enthusiast Jay Leno. Leno’s support 20 years ago was the turning point for the program when it pivoted from an associate’s to a bachelor’s degree. “I am proud to be associated with the college. Much like art historians who clean and repair the works of the renaissance era, the young men and women at McPherson College are doing it with automobiles, recreating abilities and techniques long forgotten, and they’ll make a good living doing it. Our hobby and heritage are safe in their hands.”

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is the oldest Concours in the United States and one of the world’s most prestigious gatherings of rare and antique automobiles. Prized collector cars compete each year for Best of Show, the most coveted award in the automotive industry. The Concours Selection Committee spends weeks vetting each entry, narrowing its selection down to the top classic cars in the world, which are invited to show.

“We set a bold vision 10 years ago to show a car at Pebble Beach, and I was confident our students and staff could attain it,” said Amanda Gutierrez, provost and vice president of automotive restoration. “The goal was to get invited to compete at Pebble Beach, but there is a significant process that makes that happen, especially at a small college with students working outside of class hours. This project has been a valuable learning experience for our students as they study toward their bachelor’s degree in automotive restoration. It was intense work requiring exceptional commitment, and I am extremely proud of them.”&nbsp;

After an exhaustive search for the right car, work on the project began and has incorporated classroom curricula, expert guest lectures, and senior capstone experiences. The restoration was completed by teams of student interns who worked over the course of the restoration. Brian Martin, director of automotive restoration projects, supervises the student team.

“When we set out to do this, we knew it was going to be a long-term commitment,” Martin said. “It is a complete, frame-off, top-to-bottom restoration by students. We planned for it to become the cornerstone of our program and an example of the skills our students develop while they are here.”

McPherson College has a long history of student participation at Pebble Beach, dating back to 2008 when the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and Pebble Beach Company Foundation established scholarships honoring Formula One World Champion and famed restorer Phil Hill. Over the years, more than 25 McPherson College students have earned college scholarships from Pebble Beach.

Pebble Beach Company Foundation scholarship recipients not only attend the event and shadow the judges, they also have been part of panel discussions, prepared and presented cars for the field, and attended numerous additional events during the week. However, this August will mark the first time the college will show a classic vehicle fully restored by its students.

“It’s a remarkable accomplishment,” said McPherson College President Michael Schneider. “Since the project began, nearly every student in the auto restoration program has been exposed to the restoration through classes, workshops, or as part of an internship team. For some of them, getting a chance to work on this project was why they decided to attend McPherson College. This achievement will positively impact our students and program for years. Managing this project was an enormous undertaking, and I commend the individuals, especially Brian Martin, who helped mentor our students through this process. Our friends at Paul Russell and Company, as well as the Mercedes Benz Classic Center, were excellent advisors on the project. I also thank Jay Leno, whose early and consistent support over the years has helped us flourish and reach Pebble Beach.”

Members of the student team, the Pebble Beach Scholars, college staff, and alumni will accompany the car to Pebble Beach in August. A recognition of their efforts will be celebrated during the CARS Club Motoring Festival on Saturday, May 6, at McPherson College at 2 p.m. before the awards ceremony.

Showing a student-restored car at Pebble Beach is another example of McPherson College achieving what many consider impossible. In November, the college announced a historic $500 million matching gift. To date, the college has raised over $170 million of the $250 million needed to secure the $500 million, including generous gifts from car enthusiasts Melanie and Richard Lundquist, the Rob Walton Foundation, and Dave Kinney.

McPherson College will show car at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Open Door Health Services is holding a ribbon cutting Tuesday, April 4 at 11:30 a.m. Open Door is celebrating the new partnership with Hutchinson Community College and the new services they will be providing. 

 The mobile unit will be in the Student Union Parking Lot at HutchCC.&nbsp;

The mobile unit is now on campus every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., parked in the Student Union parking lot, to provide all of the services&nbsp; provided at the center, right there on the mobile unit, with an emphasis on free STI testing. 

A person can get tested on a Tuesday at the mobile unit, and then one&nbsp;week later, they can come back to the mobile unit where Open Door will have the results. If the test is positive, the free treatment will be available right there on the mobile unit. The student won't have to travel to a pharmacy or anything like that. All of that is free.&nbsp;

No burnt materials at landfill Tuesday

McPHERSON — The McPherson County Community Foundation (MCCF) has announced the final totals of their Match Week event. Between Mar. 6-10 over $590,000, with match included, was raised to help build the endowments of 44 county nonprofits. This total breaks the record of $386,000 set by the foundation just last year.

“What our communities have done this year for our organizations is brilliant,” Becky Goss, President and CEO of MCCF, said, “What this proves is that the citizens of McPherson County are committed to the future. We’ve shown that we are committed to making sure that these organizations and programs will be here for our children and grandchildren.”

McPherson Opera House received the largest amount finishing with a grand total of $162,615 after the match was applied. Steps Against Poverty McPherson County received the most donations with a total of 77 different donors.

Since beginning in 2014 the event has raised over 2.5 million dollars. The change from a one-day event to an entire week, came after the record-breaking success of 2021. The Foundation determined more time gave organizations more opportunities.

The matching total for this year’s event was $100,000. This total comes from a combination of the Patterson Family Foundation and the Gaeddert Family Fund. MCCF received the Patterson Family Foundation ‘Community Foundation Match Program’ grant worth $70,000. Part of this grant allowed for all the organizations to receive a minimum of $1,000 total before the overall match was applied. Most of the grant was used towards the overall matching total.

The Patterson Family Foundation is a family-led foundation extending the legacy of Neal and Jeanne Patterson to improve the rural communities we come from through health care, education, economic opportunity, and beyond. In partnership with the Kansas Association of Community Foundations (KACF), the Patterson Family Foundation is opening a match grant program for community foundations in rural and micropolitan communities in Kansas and Western Missouri. Funds may be used as match funds for any 2023 match event so that the impact of local donors’ gifts can be amplified. Each community is eligible to receive up to $70,000.

Moundridge Foundation and Inman Foundation both received the full $70,000 and their matching events will take place in the fall.

Matching funds are given to organizations on a proportional basis. For example, if an organization receives 10% of the total donations, they will receive $10,000 to use for immediate needs. Organizations can receive a maximum of 20% of the matching total.

Body found in Harvey County Monday afternoon

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Buhler USD 313 Board of Education plans to hold a special meeting Wednesday. 

On that agenda will be a bond update after the vote is done on Tuesday.

Also, the board will go over a new job description for a staff member and employment issues with licensed, classified and supplemental staff and the addition of licensed staff.

The board meeting will take place at noon Wednesday at Union Valley Elementary in Hutchinson.

USD 313 to hold board meeting after bond vote

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — One person was transported to a local hospital and then transferred to Wichita after an accident Monday morning on the Woodie Seat Freeway in Hutchinson.

At 7:11 a.m. Monday, Hutchinson Police, Fire and EMS were sent on to the Freeway southbound near the Avenue F on ramp for what police say was a motor vehicle vs. pedestrian crash, though the observer who emailed the photo to Hutch Post said the injured party was on a three wheeled bicycle.

A 54-year-old woman was heading south on the freeway and was struck by a vehicle operated by a 55-year-old man also traveling south. The woman was taken to Hutchinson Regional and then transferred to Via Christi in Wichita for her injuries.

The collision is being investigated by The Hutchinson Police Department Traffic Unit and they ask if you have any information regarding the crash, please contact Traffic Officer Hammond or Traffic Officer Boudreaux at (620) 694-2854.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — One person was transported to a local hospital and then transferred to Wichita after an accident Monday morning on the Woodie Seat Freeway in Hutchinson.At 7:11 a.m. Monday, Hutchinson Police, Fire and EMS were sent on to the Freeway southbound near the Avenue F on ramp for what police say was a motor vehicle vs. pedestrian crash, though the observer who emailed the photo to Hutch Post said the injured party was on a three wheeled bicycle.A 54-year-old woman was heading south on the freeway and was struck by a vehicle operated by a 55-year-old man also traveling south. One person hurt in Woodie Seat crash Monday morning

TOPEKA — Leadership Kansas, one of the country's oldest and most distinguished statewide leadership programs, on Monday announced the Kansas Emerging Leaders(KEL) Class of 2023, including one leader from Hutchinson.

Miguel Angel Venegas of M&amp;M's Construction, LLC in Hutchinson is a part of the 2023 class.

KEL is a statewide program designed to enhance and motivate young leaders from various Kansas communities. Each year, Kansans in their 20s and 30s are nominated to apply for the program.

Developed in 2019 based on feedback from the nearly 1,600 Leadership Kansas alumni, LK created KEL to give outstanding young leaders a format to learn more about Kansas and about the opportunities within the state for professional growth.

"The 20 individuals selected to participate in the 2023 program reflect Kansas's demographics and geography as well as the state's make up of private and public sectors. We are excited to help them begin their journey of leadership and discovery," said LK Executive Director Aaron Miller. "Upon completion of the program, these young professionals will be better equipped to shoulder important leadership responsibilities in their individual careers and for their respective communities because of their experience and training through Kansas Emerging Leaders."

The class will learn about a myriad of topics important to Kansans through five monthly sessions. 

Topics will include learning about Kansas’ business, social, educational, and government issues of our past, how they impact us today, and how they will shape our future.

Class members will also build a network of fellow Kansans who are committed to the state’s success.

Members will meet mentors and connect with Kansas leaders.

The program will create a pipeline of potential future Leadership Kansas program participants. 

The 2023 class will visit Dodge City, Hays, KC Metro, Lawrence, Topeka, and Wichita.

To qualify for the program, nominees must work or live in Kansas, be an outstanding leader, who has been involved in campus or community programs and expresses an interest to stay in Kansas and become more involved.

Hutchinson man part of Kansas Emerging Leaders class

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — On April 15, 2023 the Hutchinson Reno County Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Reno County Child Care Task Force will host an open meeting with all organizations interested in being a part of a collaborative application to the Kansas’ Children’s Cabinet Accelerator Grant opportunity.

This Accelerator Grant is specifically focused on expanding full time, full year child care capacity in communities by offering capital funds for expansion, renovation, new construction and the implementation of sustainable solutions for licensed child care providers. The applicants must be “shovel ready” with blueprints, budgets, licensing and project plans to qualify for the Accelerator Grant.

A public meeting is being held at the Hutch Chamber at 11:00 am on April 15th to review grant criteria and discuss project readiness. All potential applicants are asked to bring their potential plans and budgets to the meeting to present to the Task Force for consideration.

This Task Force is the same group that was awarded ARPA dollars from both the Reno County Commission and Hutchinson City Council earlier this year.

The Hutch Chamber will serve as the fiscal sponsor for the grant, as well as the administrator of funds should the application be selected. “It’s a rigorous process, but we are happy to be an advocate for child care as we know it greatly impacts many other economic development initiatives our community is working on,” Teufel said. 

If this Reno County collaborative application is awarded, this grant has the potential to open up to 200 more slots for child care in Reno County. 

These dollars will work alongside ARPA dollars invested by Reno County and the City of Hutchinson to further innovation and sustainability of child care county wide. All interested parties should attend the meeting.

The deadline for the final application is May 15th with an announcement of grant winners happening in June.

County collaborating for child care cash

I don’t know about you, but spring is here and I am ready for it. After a cold winter, there is nothing better than the sun on your face that first warm spring day. That same sunshine brings new growth, and we can see our pastures greening up. At first, the blades of grass barely poke through the ground, but soon with a little bit of sunshine and (hopefully) some water the grass grows at an amazing rate. The growth is incredible and what I find more fascinating is it happens year after year. Fall and winter comes and the top growth dies off only to come back as new growth the next year. Why? The secret is in the roots, the grassroots. Just like the prairie, Kansas Farm Bureau relies on grassroots to make our organization strong and resilient. They are the source of everything that happens even though they may not always be very visible. Our grassroots are what anchor us in the ground and give the organization a strong footing. Our grassroots run deep; they have been growing for over a century. Without our counties anchoring and supporting, the rest of the organization would not exist. Our deep roots and wide network are also what make us survive. When things are tough, we cover enough ground to help us to receive what we need to keep going. Just like grassroots bring in water and nutrients, our counties supply the organization with new ideas, hard work and volunteers. In turn, the leaves provide the plant with energy. The Kansas Farm Bureau provides advocacy, support and education back to the counties. Those grassroots are what makes Farm Bureau such a great organization. It is the fact that each county has its own, autonomous association, then each state is its own entity and the American Farm Bureau Federation exists not because of the states but the counties in each state. Just like the grass plant, nothing else would exist without the county level organizations. All policy and decisions ultimately are made at the county level. Every leader started out as a member in their home county. Every policy in our state and national policy book started out as an idea at the county level and worked its way through the system. The most effective education, advocacy and community service all happen at the county level. That is why we can represent farmers and ranchers of all types of no matter how big or small their farms or ranches are. The depth and breadth of our roots is what makes us different from every other agricultural organization and we should be very proud of that. Yes, everyone sees the green grass growing above ground but that green grass exists because of its roots, and I don’t know about you but I am awfully proud of my grassroots. Insight: From the Ground Up

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A motion will be on the Hutchinson City Council agenda Tuesday to put the 30th and Lucille intersection back as it was before August of 2019, with no traffic signal, but Mayor Jon Richardson still wants to hear from his fellow council members as they meet Tuesday.

"I'm sure there will be a lot of discussion about it and clarity in regards to what a positive vote means and what a negative vote means on this agenda item," Richardson said. "Basically, we're going to make a decision as a council on if we are going to move forward and address it as a council or if we are going to leave it as is."

As phrased and placed on the agenda, a positive vote would be for as is, which means no traffic light. The council would have to vote no on the as is option to reopen the discussion, unless a member could bring a substitute motion that would be able to get a second and then be approved.

Richardson did not tip his hand on Monday as to how he would vote. The fundamental question is which option will have three votes to pass.&nbsp;

30th and Lucille decision not clear going into Tuesday meeting

Massive ranch is for sale for $16.7 million

LINCOLN — It’s a $16.7 million ranch story sure to stir some nostalgic memories in the Sandhills of Nebraska.

But even if you’re not from the area, a property called Dumbbell has got to pique curiosity.

The Dumbbell Ranch, which spans a 
whopping 15,500 acres, mostly in Cherry County, is attracting attention 
as it now is up for sale&nbsp; — poised to separate from the family that has 
owned it for more than a century.&nbsp;

The rationale behind that break may 
sound familiar: The younger generation has more pressing interests than 
to oversee the Hyannis area operation.&nbsp;

“They don’t want to ranch, and I’m 
really grateful they were honest with me,” Anne Anderson Bennett said of
 her daughters Margaret and Leatha, who are in their 20s.

Bennett’s only sibling, Gordon 
Anderson, is a “computer guru” who loves his life in Colorado. Their 
parents have passed. At 57, Bennett, divorced for 17 years, is preparing
 to get married again.

“It just really was the right time,” she said of selling.

A less common occurrence, says 
Valentine area broker Mark Johnson of Hall and Hall, is a place like the
 Dumbbell hitting the market.

Johnson, whose business is selling 
ranches, said the property stands out for various reasons, including a 
precious natural resource, water. It sits atop the Ogallala Aquifer, 
which creates shallow lakes and sub-irrigated meadows that he said are 
known to be the headwaters for the Middle Loup River.

“This one has a deeper stamp,” 
Johnson said, noting the ranch’s storied past, its artesian wells, 27 
windmills, eight solar wells, rangeland and watering sites for 
livestock.

He called the Dumbbell — historically
 a 900-head cow/calf operation that’s in the nation’s “top cow county”— 
one of the founding ranches of the Nebraska Sandhills.

Anne’s great-grandfather Gustaf Anderson, an orphaned Swedish immigrant, acquired the area in 1913.

As the history goes, pieced together 
from family and various other sources, the Dumbbell headquarters was 
established in 1887 by Dr. A.J. Plumer, who had hoped the railroad would
 be built through the valley.

He and his wife, Anna, a nurse, constructed a “white mansion” structure to serve as a maternity hospital.&nbsp;

Lore has it that Plumer accidentally 
slammed a hammer on his thumb while building the hospital, exclaiming 
“Only a dumbbell would do that.”

Plumer expanded a cattle operation 
before moving and selling the ranch in 1906. In 1913, Gustaf Anderson 
became sole owner of a property that would grow to about 52,000 acres.

Anderson would make the trip from Red
 Oak, Iowa, to the Dumbbell Ranch at least a dozen times a year by train
 or vehicle —&nbsp; a trip that each generation of Andersons has made over 
the decades.

Three children of Gustaf and his 
wife, Janie, later split the ranch into sections and called them 
Pitchfork, 3 Circles and Dumbbell.&nbsp;

Son Gordon got the Dumbbell and eventually passed it to son Gerald, who then left it to Anne and her brother.

Anne said she has worked the past 
three decades with her dad on the business, traveling as often as she 
could to the ranch. “We love it so much, we’ve been able to make it 
work.”

She lauded the lineup of managers who
 over the generations lived at the site, maintained the operation and 
became engaged in the community.&nbsp;

“They are the ones that live there and have boots on the ground,” she said.

Her dad died in 2016; her mom passed in 2021.

The ranch has received local suitors, as well as interest and visitors from other states, since Johnson<a target="_blank" href="https://hallhall.com/property-for-sale/nebraska/dumbbell-ranch/a095d00002U10JQ/"> started marketing</a> it about a week ago, he said.

Anne said her family is proud to have
 diversified the operation, which includes the Flying A Cattle Company, 
without forsaking the native rangeland. The family feels blessed, she 
said, to “be a small part of the unique Sandhills ecosystem and 
community.”

“It’s dear to our hearts,” said Anne. “We love the Sandhills. Our family loves ranching. It’s time to move on.”

 </figure><h2>Massive ranch is for sale for $16.7 million</h2>By CINDIY GONZALEZ <a href="https://nebraskaexaminer.com/2023/04/03/dumbbell-in-nebraska-sandhills-gains-spotlight-with-sheer-size-storied-past/">Nebraska Examiner</a>LINCOLN — It’s a $16.7 million ranch story sure to stir some nostalgic memories in the Sandhills of Nebraska.But even if you’re not from the area, a property called Dumbbell has got to pique curiosity.<figure>

 </figure>The Dumbbell Ranch, which spans a 
whopping 15,500 acres, mostly in Cherry County, is attracting attention 
as it now is up for sale&nbsp; — poised to separate from the family that has 
owned it for more than a century.&nbsp;The rationale behind that break may 
sound familiar: The younger generation has more pressing interests than 
to oversee the Hyannis area operation.&nbsp;“They don’t want to ranch, and I’m 
really grateful they were honest with me,” Anne Anderson Bennett said of
 her daughters Margaret and Leatha, who are in their 20s.Bennett’s only sibling, Gordon 
Anderson, is a “computer guru” who loves his life in Colorado. Their 
parents have passed. At 57, Bennett, divorced for 17 years, is preparing
 to get married again.“It just really was the right time,” she said of selling.A less common occurrence, says 
Valentine area broker Mark Johnson of Hall and Hall, is a place like the
 Dumbbell hitting the market.<figure>

 </figure>Johnson, whose business is selling 
ranches, said the property stands out for various reasons, including a 
precious natural resource, water. It sits atop the Ogallala Aquifer, 
which creates shallow lakes and sub-irrigated meadows that he said are 
known to be the headwaters for the Middle Loup River.“This one has a deeper stamp,” 
Johnson said, noting the ranch’s storied past, its artesian wells, 27 
windmills, eight solar wells, rangeland and watering sites for 
livestock.He called the Dumbbell — historically
 a 900-head cow/calf operation that’s in the nation’s “top cow county”— 
one of the founding ranches of the Nebraska Sandhills.Anne’s great-grandfather Gustaf Anderson, an orphaned Swedish immigrant, acquired the area in 1913.As the history goes, pieced together 
from family and various other sources, the Dumbbell headquarters was 
established in 1887 by Dr. A.J. Plumer, who had hoped the railroad would
 be built through the valley.He and his wife, Anna, a nurse, constructed a “white mansion” structure to serve as a maternity hospital.&nbsp;Lore has it that Plumer accidentally 
slammed a hammer on his thumb while building the hospital, exclaiming 
“Only a dumbbell would do that.”Hence, the Dumbbell name.Plumer expanded a cattle operation 
before moving and selling the ranch in 1906. In 1913, Gustaf Anderson 
became sole owner of a property that would grow to about 52,000 acres.<figure>

 Oak, Iowa, to the Dumbbell Ranch at least a dozen times a year by train
 or vehicle —&nbsp; a trip that each generation of Andersons has made over 
the decades.Three children of Gustaf and his 
wife, Janie, later split the ranch into sections and called them 
Pitchfork, 3 Circles and Dumbbell.&nbsp;Son Gordon got the Dumbbell and eventually passed it to son Gerald, who then left it to Anne and her brother.<figure>

three decades with her dad on the business, traveling as often as she 
could to the ranch. “We love it so much, we’ve been able to make it 
work.”She lauded the lineup of managers who
 over the generations lived at the site, maintained the operation and 
became engaged in the community.&nbsp;“They are the ones that live there and have boots on the ground,” she said.Her dad died in 2016; her mom passed in 2021.The ranch has received local suitors, as well as interest and visitors from other states, since Johnson<a target="_blank" href="https://hallhall.com/property-for-sale/nebraska/dumbbell-ranch/a095d00002U10JQ/"> started marketing</a> it about a week ago, he said.Anne said her family is proud to have
 diversified the operation, which includes the Flying A Cattle Company, 
without forsaking the native rangeland. The family feels blessed, she 
said, to “be a small part of the unique Sandhills ecosystem and 
community.”“It’s dear to our hearts,” said Anne. “We love the Sandhills. Our family loves ranching. It’s time to move on.”<figure>

‘Dumbbell’ in Nebraska Sandhills gains spotlight with sheer size, storied past

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Renowned Christian artist and songwriter Matthew West will perform at the Kansas State Fair on Wednesday, September 13. He’ll be joined by up-and-coming Christian artist Anne Wilson.

Matthew West is a prolific artist, scoring 25 number one hits. He’s a five-time Grammy Award nominee and is the reigning Nashville Songwriters Association International Songwriter-Artist of the Year (putting him in the company of previous winners that include Luke Combs, Taylor Swift and Luke Bryan). His win makes him the first Christian artist to take home the honor in 20 years. In 2022, he won his fifth ASCAP (The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) Christian Songwriter of the Year award and earned Song of the Year for “My Jesus,” which he co-wrote with Anne Wilson and Jeff Pardo.

Anne Wilson will open for West, bringing her unique transcendent vocals, and down-to-Earth storytelling style.

This Lexington, Kentucky native mixes the heart of contemporary Christian music with the sound of Country. Her 2021 debut single, “My Jesus,” became a GOLD-certified No.1 on Billboard’s Christian Airplay chart. Wilson is currently nominated for a Grammy Award for her 2022 debut album My Jesus, has won two GMA (Gospel Music Association) Dove Awards and two K-LOVE Fan Awards, while also scoring a coveted American Music Award nomination.
