Westphal Jewelers and The Salvation Army are teaming up to challenge you to get your “Bling On”!

Each year the cost of raising money continues to go up with needing to pay bell ringers to cover the hours when volunteers aren’t available. “Many of our bell ringers who we pay come to us for extra money during the holidays, but it’s harder and harder to get enough bell ringers each year”, says Major James. Having rang bells in the cold wind blowing off of Lake Michigan for a season, or several weeks of below zero temps in Omaha, Major James knows that it’s not always easy to find people who will brave the elements. However, The Salvation Army depends on bell ringers to come along side them to help those in need and to keep their own lights on throughout the year.

It's for this reason that Westphal Jewelers is also encouraging people to volunteer to help The Salvation Army with the good work The Salvation Army does each day throughout the year. This year Westphal Jewelers is giving out a diamond ring to a lucky volunteer who will ring the bell for The Salvation army. There will be a drawing the week of Christmas on Monday Dec. 22 on KWBW at 7:15am.

You can sign up for a one time 2 hour slot and ring bells or you can sign up and ring for as many time slots as you have time for. (Dec. 3, 2025)— The Kansas Corn, Wheat, Soybean, and Sorghum associations today announced the date for the 2026 Kansas Commodity Classic, the premier annual convention for the producers of the state’s four top crops. The event is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Salina, and will kick off at 8:30 a.m., with registration and breakfast prior.

The one-day event is designed to equip Kansas farmers with actionable insights on critical issues impacting their operations, including market trends, long-term weather outlooks, and federal and state legislative actions. The Kansas Commodity Classic is free to attend, thanks to the generous support of industry sponsors, and includes a complimentary breakfast and lunch for all registered attendees.

Featured presentations include a market outlook from Tanner Ehmke of CoBank, as well as an economics and policy session featuring Kansas State University’s Robin Reid and Dr. Jennifer Ifft. Ross Janssen will provide a weather outlook as part of the program. Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam will deliver opening remarks, and farm broadcaster Greg Akagi of WIBW 580 AM will serve as the event emcee.

“The challenges facing Kansas farmers evolve every year–especially this year–but the need for reliable, up-to-date information remains constant,” said Kansas Sorghum Producers CEO Adam York. “The 2026 Kansas Commodity Classic will deliver high-level situational awareness and policy briefings directly from the experts, ensuring our state’s producers are better prepared to navigate challenges and opportunities in the coming year.”

Pre-registration for the Kansas Commodity Classic is strongly encouraged for planning purposes and is available at kansascommodityclassic.com. Growers can also register to attend commodity organization events scheduled around the Commodity Classic. Two events, the Kansas Corn Symposium and Kansas Sorghum Producers Annual Membership Meeting and Reception, will both be held on Thursday, Jan. 29.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 300 block of South Main on the west side.

In 1954, the Blue Grill Cafe started up at 319 S. Main, co-owned by Jack Edgington and James Henry.

In 1958, Edward Beach started an electrical maintenance and supply company at 313 S. Main. Both of these businesses were at their locations for a long time. The first photo shows these businesses around Christmastime in 1970.

The second photo shows the Blue Grill interior with its waitstaff between 1956 to 1962, which included Iva Hahn Edgington, Tress Edgington and Robert Edgington.

The Blue Grill operated there until 1982, while Ed Beach Electric lasted until 1990.

After a business frontage remodeling, there have been a few short-time businesses in these locations, namely La-Tienda Mexican Grocery at 319 S. Main.

In 2002, Jake Bigger and Brandon Hildebrand started Innovative Tint and Graphics at 313 S. Main.

In 2010, John Davies replaced Brandon in the partnership and the business continues there today. The third photo shows the four business-addressed locations today. That includes 319, Swae'Lux Beauty and Beyond, 317, vacant, 315, Torres Kustom Upholstery and 313, still Innovative Tint and Graphics, with the property being owned by Travis and Courtney Kirk.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Blue Grill Cafe - Vol. 151

The Center for Public Safety Leadership (CPSL) has announced the addition of Tarik Khatib to its staff, bringing with him decades of executive experience and a strong background in leadership development.

Khatib, a former chief of police, joins the organization with a career marked by proven leadership in law enforcement and public service. His experience in managing high-level operations and guiding departmental strategy is expected to further strengthen CPSL’s mission of preparing public safety professionals for leadership roles across Kansas and beyond.

In addition to his policing career, Khatib spent four years with the University of Kansas Public Management Center, where he led multiple leadership and professional development programs. His work there focused on training public sector leaders, enhancing organizational culture, and equipping teams with the tools needed to navigate complex challenges.

CPSL officials say Khatib’s combination of real-world leadership, teaching experience, and practical training expertise makes him a valuable addition to the program.

“We are excited to welcome Tarik to our team,” the announcement said. “His insight, energy, and proven commitment to public service will be an asset to our CPSL programs.”

Khatib will begin contributing immediately to CPSL’s growing slate of leadership training initiatives, with an emphasis on strengthening collaboration and elevating professional development opportunities across the region.

The reporting period for the holiday ran from&nbsp;6:00 pm&nbsp;on&nbsp;Wednesday, November 26&nbsp;through&nbsp;11:59 pm&nbsp;on&nbsp;Sunday, November 30.

KHP worked one fatal non-DUI related crash, involving one non-DUI related fatality over the holiday reporting period.

The Medicine Shoppe in Hutchinson is paying a heartfelt tribute to one of the community’s most beloved voices. On Tuesday, the pharmacy unveiled its newly wrapped delivery Jeep — complete with a special nod to longtime sportscaster Rusty Hilst, who passed away earlier this year after battling ALS.

A photo shared on Facebook shows the hood of the Jeep featuring an homage to Hilst, the iconic voice of the Hutchinson Salthawks and Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons for decades. Known for his warm delivery, unmistakable enthusiasm, and deep love for local sports, Hilst became a fixture in Reno County households.

The tribute highlights one of his well-known on-air references: “The Lightest Touch.” The phrase became a signature line during Medicine Shoppe advertisements Hilst read during sports broadcasts, praising Travis and Lacey at The Medicine Shoppe for their gentle, virtually pain-free vaccinations.

HUTCHINSON — Buhler School District Superintendent&nbsp;Cindy Couchman&nbsp;joined the KWBW Morning Show this week, offering a detailed look at how USD 313 makes winter weather decisions, prepares for the busy December season, collaborations with other Reno County districts, and plans for long-term enrollment changes.&nbsp;

Couchman explained that she routinely begins evaluating potential snow days around&nbsp;4 a.m., driving roads across Buhler’s large district to&nbsp;determine&nbsp;travel conditions. She works closely with the National Weather Service, relying on storm timing, confidence&nbsp;levels&nbsp;and radar to know whether roads will be safe.&nbsp;

She said the district aims to make a call by&nbsp;6 a.m., when buses begin warming up. But this week’s system—projected to&nbsp;hit around&nbsp;7 a.m.—was especially challenging.&nbsp;

“That is one of the worst&nbsp;arrival&nbsp;times a storm can have for a school system,” Couchman said. “We really need to know by about 6 a.m. because our buses have to get on the road.”&nbsp;

Ultimately, decisions&nbsp;are made with&nbsp;student drivers&nbsp;in mind.&nbsp;

“When I make a decision to cancel school, I’m really making it for my inexperienced drivers who may be in a sedan with not-great tires,” she said. “We can always make up time, but we can’t make up a life.”&nbsp;

Couchman added that USD 313 now uses&nbsp;two-hour late starts&nbsp;more&nbsp;frequently, giving time for daylight, improved&nbsp;visibility&nbsp;and more&nbsp;accurate&nbsp;storm evaluation.&nbsp;

Operation Joy to Spark December Spirit&nbsp;

As the semester nears its end, Buhler students and staff are gearing up for&nbsp;Operation Joy, a districtwide celebration running Dec. 15–19. The entire district&nbsp;participates&nbsp;in themed dress-up days such as Light-Up Day and Ugly Sweater Day.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;Buhler Education Foundation&nbsp;also donates daily prizes for staff, ranging from small classroom items to electronics,&nbsp;blankets&nbsp;and gift cards.&nbsp;

Looking ahead, all Reno County public and private schools will come together on&nbsp;January 5&nbsp;for “All&nbsp;Hands on&nbsp;Deck,” a countywide professional development day hosted at Hutchinson Community College and the Sports Arena.&nbsp;

Declining Birth Rates Raise Long-Term Planning Concerns&nbsp;

Couchman also addressed a topic affecting districts statewide: declining enrollment tied to falling birth rates.&nbsp;

Reno County births have dropped from&nbsp;762 in 2010&nbsp;to&nbsp;655 in 2023, a shift that is now beginning to affect kindergarten class sizes. Historically, about&nbsp;22%&nbsp;of county births eventually&nbsp;enroll&nbsp;in USD 313 five years later—a percentage that has held surprisingly steady.&nbsp;

“Our upper grades have 170 to 185 students, but our younger grades are closer to 135 to 150,” she said. “As those larger classes graduate, we’re going to feel the impact.”&nbsp;

Couchman emphasized that Buhler is&nbsp;not in&nbsp;crisis, but&nbsp;is taking proactive steps to avoid future staffing or financial strain.&nbsp;

“We’re&nbsp;trying to ‘right-size’ the district,” she said. “Every time a position opens, we take a careful look at whether the numbers justify filling it. We want long-term stability.”&nbsp;

Buhler Ed Foundation Bringing Back Dueling Pianos&nbsp;

Couchman also promoted the return of the Buhler Education Foundation’s&nbsp;Dueling Pianos&nbsp;fundraiser, set for&nbsp;January 23&nbsp;at the 1861 Club. The $80 ticket includes dinner, beverages,&nbsp;auctions&nbsp;and an evening of entertainment, with Couchman and local principals even stepping in as guest bartenders. The Hutchinson City Council moved through a full agenda during its meeting last evening,&nbsp;taking action&nbsp;on financial resolutions, development fees, regional agreements, legal matters, and major public works updates and approved a new contract for the city’s top administrator.&nbsp;

Council&nbsp;began by approving the&nbsp;consent agenda, which included several board and commission appointments and the&nbsp;2026 employment contract for City Manager Enrico Villegas.&nbsp;

Under the new agreement, Villegas will earn&nbsp;just under $192,000&nbsp;next year, an increase from his&nbsp;2025 compensation of $162,500. The contract also provides a&nbsp;$500 monthly vehicle allowance, a&nbsp;city-issued cell phone, and&nbsp;contributions to his Health Savings Account (HSA).&nbsp;

Two&nbsp;routine&nbsp;but essential end-of-year items were approved unanimously. &nbsp;First,&nbsp;a&nbsp;resolution authorizing the city to pay&nbsp;2026 payroll and claims&nbsp;promptly, ensuring bills and payroll are processed without delay.&nbsp;Also approved a&nbsp;renewal of the city’s&nbsp;annual waiver from state GAAP accounting standards, allowing Hutchinson to continue using the Kansas municipal regulatory basis. Finance staff said the method is easier for residents to follow, less costly to audit, and consistent with past financial reporting.&nbsp;

Council approved an ordinance authorizing the issuance of&nbsp;future General Obligation&nbsp;(GO)&nbsp;bonds&nbsp;for several planned projects:&nbsp;

The dollar amounts listed represent maximum bonding authority and may be adjusted once bids are&nbsp;finalized.&nbsp;

One of the most notable decisions of the evening was&nbsp;council’s&nbsp;adoption of an updated&nbsp;Planning and Zoning Master Fee Schedule&nbsp;— the first major revision in more than 30 years.&nbsp;Community Development Director Matt Williams said the new fees better reflect actual service costs and bring Hutchinson closer in line with peer cities, while still remaining below average in most categories.&nbsp;The changes take&nbsp;effect&nbsp;January 1.&nbsp;

Under the new fee&nbsp;schedule:&nbsp;&nbsp;

Council&nbsp;also adopted a&nbsp;memorandum of understanding&nbsp;with&nbsp;the City of&nbsp;South Hutchinson and Reno County that prevents annexation disputes over land tied to the proposed&nbsp;Evergy&nbsp;power plant.&nbsp;Hutchinson&nbsp;City Attorney Paul Brown said the agreement ensures a smooth path for the multimillion-dollar energy project and reflects improved cooperation between local governments.&nbsp;

The city will&nbsp;participate&nbsp;in national PFAS (“forever chemicals”) litigation after council voted to&nbsp;retain&nbsp;Stag Liuzza, LLC, and&nbsp;McDonald Tinker&nbsp;on a&nbsp;contingency-fee basis.&nbsp;Although Hutchinson’s water system currently shows&nbsp;non-detect&nbsp;PFAS levels in both the wellfield and finished water, working with settlement counsel&nbsp;positions&nbsp;the city to recover future testing costs and meet upcoming regulatory deadlines.&nbsp;

Public Works presented a video and detailed update on the&nbsp;Woody Seat Phase 2 reconstruction, which began in March.&nbsp;Highlights to date include:&nbsp;

The city expects&nbsp;Avenue A and the Adams Street connection to reopen by the end of January, weather&nbsp;permitting, with&nbsp;full completion,&nbsp;including the Avenue C bridge,&nbsp;is targeted for&nbsp;early summer.&nbsp;

Street crews briefed&nbsp;the council&nbsp;on their winter operations plan, covering salt and brine application, snow routes, training, and weather-monitoring systems. Hutchinson&nbsp;maintains&nbsp;680 lane miles&nbsp;of roadway, with&nbsp;333 lane miles&nbsp;designated&nbsp;as primary routes.&nbsp;Crews also&nbsp;showcased&nbsp;their newly decorated snowplows,&nbsp;painted in partnership with USD 308,&nbsp;which will appear in this weekend’s Christmas parade.&nbsp;

Council members highlighted the importance of regional cooperation following last week’s joint meeting with South Hutchinson, Reno County, and the Chamber of Commerce. They also announced upcoming community events, including Saturday’s gingerbread house activities at Memorial Hall and the Downtown Hutchinson Christmas Parade.&nbsp;

The meeting ended after an executive session&nbsp;regarding&nbsp;legal matters with the city attorney.&nbsp;

An overturned semi-truck hauling hazardous materials triggered evacuations and road closures Tuesday morning after leaking hydrochloric acid near McPherson.

McPherson County 911 received the first call at approximately 9:07 a.m., reporting the crash and chemical leak. The truck was carrying 34,000 pounds of hydrochloric acid, though officials say the amount spilled has not yet been determined.

Residents and businesses in the immediate area have been evacuated as a precaution, and all surrounding roads remain closed while emergency crews work the scene.

Those road closures, which are subject to change at any time are:

The driver of the semi self-extricated before first responders arrived. McPherson EMS evaluated the driver at the scene, but he refused treatment and transport.

The McPherson Fire Department Hazmat Team made entry to the truck and deployed booms around a nearby storm drain to prevent the acid from entering the sewage system. An environmental remediation contractor is currently en route to begin cleanup and removal operations.

Multiple agencies are assisting, including McPherson Fire, McPherson EMS, McPherson Police Department, the McPherson County Sheriff’s Office, McPherson Emergency Management, Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Department of Transportation, and the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office. Salina Fire has been deployed as a regional hazmat team to support the response.

“No further information will be released at this time,” McPherson Fire Chief Chad Mayberry said in a statement.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After a weekend filled with shopping events from Black Friday to Cyber Monday, local nonprofits are reminding residents that Giving Tuesday is a day to shift focus from consumerism to community service. The United Way of Reno County is encouraging area residents to give in whatever way they can — whether through donations, volunteer time, or lending their voice to causes they care about.

Carla Stanfield, Director of Communication and Development for the United Way, said Giving Tuesday has grown into a global movement since its start in New York City in 2012.

“It was this idea that as we’re thinking of ourselves and our families in this shopping era, we should also think of others,” Stanfield said. “Giving Tuesday is really that opportunity to think of folks outside of yourself and outside of your family and see how you might be able to impact those around you in your community.”

Stanfield emphasized that Giving Tuesday is not solely about financial contributions. Many organizations across Reno County rely heavily on volunteers, especially during the holiday season.

“It takes gifts of all kinds — dollars, time and voice — to make this work happen,” she said. “Maybe you’ve been thinking about getting involved at church, at your child’s school, or with a civic group. Today is a great day to take that first step.”

Last year, Giving Tuesday set a record with more than $18.5 billion donated globally, and an estimated 36.1 million Americans participating in charitable activities. Stanfield said those numbers show how powerful a single day of generosity can be.

Locally, opportunities to give are abundant. Residents can donate canned goods to the Food Bank of Reno County, sign up to ring bells for the Salvation Army, adopt a family for Christmas, donate winter coats, or help sort holiday gifts for local seniors. Families with children are also encouraged to volunteer together.

“This is a wonderful way to teach young people that the season isn’t just about receiving — it’s about giving,” Stanfield said. “There’s no shortage of ways to make an impact right here in Hutchinson and Reno County.”

The United Way also serves as a connector for people unsure where to begin. Stanfield said anyone looking for a place to give their time, money, or talents can call the office, and staff will help match them with an organization that aligns with their interests.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The season of giving is here, and Eagle Media is once again teaming up with Vermeer Great Plains and the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) for the annual Adopt-A-Child program — a cherished community tradition that helps bring Christmas joy to children across Reno, Harvey, and McPherson counties.

This year, more than 200 children — from newborns to teenagers — are hoping for a brighter holiday thanks to the generosity of local residents. Each child’s Christmas wish list is provided through DCF, and Eagle Media is inviting community members to “adopt” one or more children by purchasing gifts from those lists.

“This is your opportunity to make a real difference for a child in need right here in our community,” said Eagle Media’s Randy McKay. “We see firsthand how much this program means to families every year, and it wouldn’t happen without the amazing support of our listeners and partners.”

 </figure>UPDATE: As of Tuesday morning, Dec. 2, we have less than 100 children who we are still looking for individuals or businesses to adopt.&nbsp;&nbsp;HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The season of giving is here, and Eagle Media is once again teaming up with Vermeer Great Plains and the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) for the annual Adopt-A-Child program — a cherished community tradition that helps bring Christmas joy to children across Reno, Harvey, and McPherson counties.This year, more than 200 children — from newborns to teenagers — are hoping for a brighter holiday thanks to the generosity of local residents. Each child’s Christmas wish list is provided through DCF, and Eagle Media is inviting community members to “adopt” one or more children by purchasing gifts from those lists.“This is your opportunity to make a real difference for a child in need right here in our community,” said Eagle Media’s Randy McKay. “We see firsthand how much this program means to families every year, and it wouldn’t happen without the amazing support of our listeners and partners.”Those interested in adopting a child can call (620) 662-4486 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or email <a>randy.mckay@eaglemedia.com</a> to receive a child’s wish list.Once the shopping is complete, participants are invited to bring their wrapped gifts to the drop-off celebration at the Eagle Media Center, 825 N. Main, on Friday, Dec. 12, from 5 to 7 p.m.&nbsp;For nearly a decade, the Adopt-A-Child program has ensured that local children who might otherwise go without have a reason to smile during the holidays. Community members are encouraged to take part and help make this Christmas season a little brighter for kids across south-central Kansas.

First Presbyterian,&nbsp;Emanuel Lutheran, and Grace Episcopal Churches, all of Hutchinson, will jointly host a “Blue Christmas” worship service on December 11, at 7 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 201 E. Sherman Street. The event is open to the entire Hutchinson community.

Traditionally occurring on or around the winter solstice, the longest night of the year, a Blue Christmas service is meant to provide hope and healing for those experiencing grief, loss, or other difficult life situations during the holiday season.

“Although we often think of the holidays as a time of joy, celebration, and fellowship with family and friends, for some, the Christmas season means anxiety, stress, and isolation,” said the Reverend Christy Kass, pastor of First Presbyterian. “By working together, our congregations hope to provide a meaningful service for the community and an experience of solace and comfort for those having a hard time.”

This is the second year for the event, with the location rotating among the three congregations. Emanuel Lutheran hosted the inaugural joint Blue Christmas service last year. &nbsp;

Hutchinson churches to host Blue Christmas service

While sheriff’s deputies, police officers, firefighters and EMS crews are the ones the public sees responding to emergencies, two men in Reno County are quietly serving behind the scenes, offering emotional, spiritual, and peer support during some of the most difficult moments first responders face.

Reno County law enforcement chaplains Richard Haley and Adam Wooten joined the BW Morning Show on Tuesday to talk about their work, their calling, and the growing mental-health needs among those who serve on the front lines.

Haley and Wooten began their chaplaincy together in 2021, completing their basic training through the International Conference of Police Chaplains (ICPC) that summer. Both men volunteer their time — Haley serving as a local pastor and Wooten employed by the City of Hutchinson.

They arrive on scene, coordinate with supervisors, and begin what Haley calls the “ministry of presence.”“Our goal is simply to be there,” he said. “We provide spiritual and emotional support to victims, families, and officers. Sometimes that’s for a group. Sometimes it’s one-on-one. We stay until we’re no longer needed.”Wooten also follows up with officers after critical incidents, helping lead debriefings and providing ongoing wellness support.“Some officers still reach out about trauma from incidents that happened weeks ago,” Wooten said. “We continue those conversations as long as they need us.”Though their primary responsibility is to the Hutchinson Police Department and Reno County Sheriff’s Office, the chaplains assist firefighters, dispatchers, EMS crews, and other first responders when needed.“If we’re on scene and a firefighter or EMS provider needs support, we’re there for them just as much,” Wooten said.To strengthen relationships, the chaplains regularly participate in ride-alongs, often on weekends, giving officers the chance to talk openly in a low-pressure environment.“They get comfortable, they share their stories, and if they ask for prayer, we follow up,” Wooten said. “Trust builds every time we do that.”One of the pair’s most appreciated traditions is the annual Thanksgiving meal for first responders working the holiday. What began as an idea during a Friday prayer breakfast has grown into a major community-supported effort.“This year we served 122 meals between lunch and dinner on Thanksgiving Day,” Haley said. “Some officers pick up meals, some sit and eat, and we deliver to dispatch, the jail, and EMS.”The effort is supported by community donors, including significant contributions from Elliott Mortuary and others.Haley and Wooten emphasized the intense emotional weight officers carry. While the average person may encounter only a few traumatic events in a lifetime, law enforcement officers may experience multiple tragedies in a single week.“Officers respond when someone is having the worst day of their life,” Haley said. “Our job is to help them cope with what they see every day.”Haley and Wooten encourage officers — and their spouses — to reach out if something feels off.“Sometimes the wife sees the symptoms first,” Wooten noted. “We want them to call us. We’re always available.”Ultimately, the chaplains say the job comes down to relationships.“The more time we spend with them, the more trust grows,” Haley said. “We want them to know we love them, we pray for them, and we’re here for them.”Haley and Wooten say they don’t serve for recognition — only to support the men and women who protect Reno County.“We’re behind the scenes,” Haley said. “But we’re here whenever they need us.”
