BARTON COUNTY — According to the Barton County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a reported injury accident on US 56 southwest of Great Bend at Dundee just before 8 a.m. Monday. 

Deputies located a two-vehicle collision which closed the roadway for nearly 2 hours.

Investigation at the scene indicates that a 2011 Honda Accord operated by Aaron Gonzales age 19 of Kinsley, Kansas was eastbound entering a curve. It appears the Honda crossed left of center striking a 2010 Ford F250 Super Duty pulling a trailer operated by Israel Soto age 38 of Hutchinson, Kansas. 

Upon impact the Accord traveled several hundred feet east coming to rest in the south ditch. The F250 and trailer jackknifed entering the north ditch.

Gonzales was trapped in the vehicle for approximately 40 minutes while personnel from the Great Bend Fire Department extracted him. Once removed from the vehicle, Gonzales was transported to the Great Bend airport where he was taken by aircraft to a Wichita area hospital with serious injuries.

Soto, as well as two passengers in the F250 sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene by Great Bend EMS personnel.

The Sheriff’s Office is assisted at the scene by the Great Bend Fire Department and EMS service, Kansas Department of Transportation as well as the Kansas Highway Patrol.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Man injured in accident involving Hutchinson driver

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As you travel to shop or celebrate this season, Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas wants you to stay focused on the road.

"Holidays can be a hectic and stressful time for a lot of people," Steward said. "A lot of times, we see that manifest in bad driving behaviors. Whether that's aggressive driving, speeding, distracted driving, there's just a lot of things going on. The hustle and bustle of shopping, heavier traffic congestion in many cases, family tensions, just a lot of things on people's minds."

Aggressive driving includes a whole host of unsafe driving behaviors, such as weaving through traffic, running traffic lights, tailgating and speeding.&nbsp;

"Slow down," Steward said. "Leave plenty of time to get where you're going. Obviously, there's always going to be things on your mind, but, if you can just focus on driving, that's going to really pay dividends in terms of not only road safety, but in terms of your peace of mind."

Kansas statistics on crashes show that inattention and aggressive driving are problems here.

"We looked at 2022 crash statistics from the Kansas Department of Transportation," Steward said. "The four most frequent contributing circumstances noted in crash reports were inattention, 22.5% of crashes, right of way violations, following too closely, again, that's an aggressive driving behavior and driving too fast for the conditions. Speed related crashes, specifically, numbered nearly 5000, with 93 people killed and more than 2000 people injured. We also see alcohol related crashes being a big issue on our roads, especially during the holidays, from Thanksgiving to New Year's. Nearly 2200 alcohol related crashes occurred in Kansas last year, with 95 fatalities and nearly 1200 injuries resulting from those crashes."

December had the third highest number of crashes in Kansas in 2022.

AAA: Holiday season provides its own distractions; concentrate while driving

BUHLER, Kan. — IdeaTek Telcom, a leading provider of fiber internet in Kansas, is taking a significant step toward bridging the digital divide in rural Scott County thanks to a $132,907 grant awarded by the Kansas Office of Broadband Development.

The grant, part of the state’s Broadband Acceleration Grant program, will connect 50 underserved households in western Scott County to reliable, high-speed fiber internet. It will also build fiber to residents living in the unincorporated community of Modoc.

IdeaTek’s grants are part of the state’s larger efforts to provide high-speed broadband services to all Kansans. Gov. Laura Kelly announced Monday that IdeaTek was one of eight internet service providers to receive part of the $5 million in Broadband Acceleration Grants funding. IdeaTek also received funding to build fiber to Eureka.

“The City of Scott City is excited IdeaTek was awarded this grant to provide much-needed fiber access west of the city along the K-96 corridor,” said Scott City Administrator Bradley Pendergast. “This grant will benefit employers and agricultural production in Scott County while also providing fiber access to residents in unincorporated areas of the county along this corridor.&nbsp; IdeaTek has been a great partner on this project, and we are excited to see more fiber expansion across Scott County.”&nbsp;

Residents and businesses in the country have long been struggling with substandard speeds. Investment in fiber is a game changer.

Last year, IdeaTek secured a Capital Project Fund Grant, enabling the construction of 400 miles of fiber to connect farms, feedlots, and rural residents along the U.S. 83 Highway corridor from Liberal to Scott City. The current award will expand that project to the rural area west of Scott City, along Kansas Highway 96.

“The expansion of fiber optics along the K-96 corridor by IdeaTek will bring much-needed broadband speeds to the businesses and residents who reside in the area, said Katie Eisenhour, executive director of the Scott County Development Committee who wrote a letter of support for the grant. “As one of the top ag production counties in Kansas, this connectivity is critical. Today's agriculture requires internet connectivity and fiber will help us build on our existing strengths, as well as future growth.”

IdeaTek's Mission: Internet Freedom for All

IdeaTek’s mission is to build fiber internet to every corner of Kansas, said IdeaTek Co-Founder and Chief Innovation Officer Daniel Friesen. Only fiber is robust enough to support the symmetrical upload and download speeds needed for remote work, education and healthcare.

“Rural Kansas has been historically left behind when it comes to fiber infrastructure development,” Friesen said. “Our mission of Internet Freedom means we believe all Kansans should have access to ultra-speed fiber broadband – no matter if you live in a city or on a rural dirt road. Our long-term goal is to provide fiber to as many residents as we can because fiber is hands down the best technology for high-speed broadband.

Ideatek gains grant in Scott County

STERLING, Kan. —Sterling Medical Center, an affiliate of Rice Community Healthcare, announced Monday its recent approval as a federally funded Kansas Vaccines for Children (VFC) provider, reinforcing the clinic's dedication to enhancing community health by expanding access to crucial immunization services for children.

By obtaining VFC approval, Sterling Medical Center can now offer all Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended vaccines at no cost to eligible children, ensuring that all families, regardless of financial circumstances, have access to essential vaccinations.

A child is eligible for the VFC Program if he or she is younger than 19 years of age and is one of the following:

● Medicaid-eligible: A child who is eligible for (or enrolled in) the Medicaid program

● Uninsured: A child who has no health insurance coverage

● Underinsured: A child who has private health insurance, but the coverage does not include vaccines, or a child whose insurance caps vaccine coverage at a certain amount

● American Indian or Alaska Native: A child who is of American Indian or Alaska Native descent

Teresa Ellis, Clinic Director at Sterling Medical Center, expressed enthusiasm for the VFC approval, stating, "Becoming a VFC-approved provider is a significant milestone for Sterling Medical Center. Art Association seeking anniversary submissions

This past weekend Kansas Farm Bureau leaders from across the state gathered for our annual meeting. It is great to catch up with friends, gain new insights and take part in the grassroots policy process that makes our organization so unique.

A highlight of the weekend was a fundraising dinner with a Cousin Eddie theme from “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”. The event, hosted by the Kansas Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture, was in support of the End Hunger Campaign, that aims to address and eliminate food insecurity across the state.

This was no black-tie affair. There were moose mugs, people in bath robes and all kinds of fun accessories. Donations were taken for holiday punch, bingo cards for the movie, and a dessert dash after the traditional Christmas dinner. The after dinner entertainment was an interactive movie experience complete with reciting the pledge of allegiance as “grace” and wrapping it up with a sing along of the “Star-Spangled Banner”. One of the highlights of the evening was the best dressed contest, where the crowd voted on people who had done the best job of dressing like characters from the movie.

If you have no idea what I am talking about, do yourself a favor and watch the movie; it really is a true Christmas classic.

It was one of the more enjoyable fundraising dinners I have attended. This wasn’t a fancy event for high-dollar donors but it also wasn’t a home-cooked meal type held in small towns almost every weekend. I was impressed to learn that the night of festivities raised close to $20,000 with only a few hundred people in attendance. Caught up in the experience, I found myself giving more than I normally would.

In the last few years, giving money to organizations has become a higher priority for me. It makes sense that as a more established professional, I am in the financial position to start giving money. But it is more than that. A few years ago an experience philanthropist shared advice with me to “give just a little bit more than is comfortable.” He went on to say that giving can teach us what we are capable of, and he has never known anyone to regret giving to good causes.

I had never thought about giving as a stretch goal before. Giving back to organizations I have benefited from has always been on the future to do list. It always felt far off like someday when I make lots of money, I will give back. The idea that I can and should be giving now, as much or as little as I can, was an eye opener. Generosity in a moment of need and giving what you can is more meaningful than giving what you don’t need, when it is convenient for you.

The foundation’s dinner was the kind of event that empowered people to give money at whatever level they could and made it fun to join in the giving.

Start today and build the habit of giving what you can, when you can. Give a few bucks to the Salvation Army bell ringer, buy a toy for a tot or help stock your local food bank to spread holiday cheer. Send your favorite nonprofit an end of the year donation whether it’s $5, $50 or $500.

It’s time to stop imagining and see all that you can do.&nbsp;

One of the highlights of the evening was the best dressed contest, where the crowd voted on people who had done the best job of dressing like characters from the movie.If you have no idea what I am talking about, do yourself a favor and watch the movie; it really is a true Christmas classic.It was one of the more enjoyable fundraising dinners I have attended. This wasn’t a fancy event for high-dollar donors but it also wasn’t a home-cooked meal type held in small towns almost every weekend. I was impressed to learn that the night of festivities raised close to $20,000 with only a few hundred people in attendance. Caught up in the experience, I found myself giving more than I normally would.In the last few years, giving money to organizations has become a higher priority for me. It makes sense that as a more established professional, I am in the financial position to start giving money. But it is more than that. A few years ago an experience philanthropist shared advice with me to “give just a little bit more than is comfortable.” He went on to say that giving can teach us what we are capable of, and he has never known anyone to regret giving to good causes.I had never thought about giving as a stretch goal before. Giving back to organizations I have benefited from has always been on the future to do list. It always felt far off like someday when I make lots of money, I will give back. The idea that I can and should be giving now, as much or as little as I can, was an eye opener. Generosity in a moment of need and giving what you can is more meaningful than giving what you don’t need, when it is convenient for you.The foundation’s dinner was the kind of event that empowered people to give money at whatever level they could and made it fun to join in the giving.Start today and build the habit of giving what you can, when you can. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Fire Department and Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System will be presented with over $33,000 in donations toward the Hope's Cradle project later this week. The event will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Fire Station 1 on Main Street in Hutchinson.

The project will allow for two cradle donations for parents who need to give up their babies, one each at two fire stations in Hutchinson.

A Hope's Cradle is a legal, private and secure way a mother or guardian can relinquish their rights of a child anonymously. The cradle is installed on the outside of the fire station. When a child is placed in the cradle and the door is shut an alarm goes off alerting authorities, including 911, that they need to come get the baby.

"Our goal is really to ensure that both the guardian and the child have a future," said Hutchinson Fire Chief Steven Beer. "This cradle can give the guardian hope in a desperate situation and prevent the loss of life."

House Bill 2024 was passed earlier this year permitting the installation of such safety boxes or cradles at both fire stations and police stations in Kansas.&nbsp;

The cradles will be located at the new Fire Station 1 on Main Street and one at the Avenue E station.

Oak Ridge Boys to play Kansas State Fair

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Mayor John Richardson said it is likely the city has found their permanent manager, but he can't announce who it is yet.

"We have a gentleman that we have been negotiating with," Richardson said. "We came to an agreement late last week verbally. I believe he has given notice to his City Council. I don't know if anything's been signed yet, so I don't want to say much more than that, but I think we're ready to move forward with somebody."

This has caused a little slowdown in the process of getting someone new at the Hutchinson Airport.

"That might have been put a little bit on pause because of where we're at on the city manager," Richardson said. "We're so close to getting someone on board. That's a role that reports directly to the city manager. We don't want to delay things too much, but because we're so close to having someone stepping in, let's just go ahead and get them on board first."

That onboarding isn't going to be immediate, though. As Richardson understands it, the transition for the new City Manager will be about two months.

City close to permanent city manager hire

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —BrightHouse hosted its annual Stuff the Bus fundraiser with My 93-1 on Saturday, Dec. 2. The purpose of Stuff the Bus is to fill a school bus with non-perishable food items and household items for BrightHouse's shelter.&nbsp; 

BrightHouse  and those who volunteered for the event, handed out flyers with items listed to donate in front of Dillons Marketplace at 3200 Plaza East Drive in Hutchinson. The bus is parked out in front of Dillons for the entire event so it can be filled with those items.

Executive Director of BrightHouse Sue Wray said that the event really helps stretch the budget. She said this year, staff kept track of how long they&nbsp;could rely off of donated items.&nbsp;

"We thought it would be interesting to keep track," Wray said. "We didn't have to buy toilet paper and laundry detergent until October. So yeah, it makes a big difference. It really does because everything is expensive and we want to help as many people as we can, so it really helps us stretch our other dollars further so we can buy more bus tickets or buy more of whatever else we need."&nbsp;

&nbsp;Nickerson and South Hutchinson USD 309 donated the bus for BrightHouse. Wray said this is the first time USD 309 has been able to help with the fundraiser.

"We are really excited that they were able to do that," Wray said. "And to have a big bus, is nice because it's kind of easier to sort everything and get it all up on the bus and we've got a system. It takes us about an hour to unload it which is pretty good but we have a lot of people and the shelter manager and her family have been doing it for awhile so they've got a whole system down and it just means a lot to have that."

The&nbsp;total number of donated items and cash donations from Stuff the Bus will be announced in the coming days. 

In addition to My 93-1, this years sponsors were Dillons, Hog Wild Pit Bar-B-Q and Allen Samuels CDJR, ProValue Insurance and Oasis Healthcare Staffing. Wray said the sponsors mean a lot to BrightHouse because it's difficult to put on Stuff the Bus without their help.&nbsp;

&nbsp;"It shows that the community is behind us and it means a lot to, like our support groups," Wray said. "Our support groups know who helped us out and it means a lot to them because a lot of people feel isolated and they feel very much alone in whatever has happened to them, whatever abuse has come up for them so to know that the community is behind Brighthouse and helping them, makes them feel supported and in a very real way."&nbsp;

BrightHouse provides confidential support to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. Services are free to to anyone in Reno, Kingman and Harper counties.

Land Bank Board to meet Tuesday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The PHA&nbsp;Coalition of Senior Care Providers that includes&nbsp;Wesley Towers in Hutchinson, Mennonite Friendship Communities in South Hutchinson and Sunshine Meadows in Buhler wants to be clear that whatever stage of senior care you're in, one of their homes is likely to have the amenities you need.

"I think we need to not assume that everybody knows what a retirement community is," said Nathan Spencer with Sunshine Meadows in Buhler. "Each of us are a full continuum of care retirement community. That's one of the benefits of moving into a community like ours. You can come in at whatever level of care that you have the need of, from independent living, to assisted living, all of us have a skilled nursing aspect and then a memory care piece, as well."

Each of these local homes has a local board that governs their futures.

"It's so important, as you're making decisions for how your campus may change the type of services that you're going to provide, or how you're going to address a different type of health issue, to have people from this area, to understand the culture," said Dawn Veh with Mennonite Friendship Communities.

Mark Mains with Wesley Towers is clear that there is a shared focus among all three of the homes, even though they are technically 'competitors'.

"Decisions are made based on what's best for the community, for Wesley Towers or whichever facility," Mains said. "How does that impact Hutchinson and the people that live here? We don't have to make decisions to satisfy an investor or an entity that's in another state or something like that. We just feel like that's important and it kind of speaks to our mission."

It's so important to take visits to as many facilities as you can, because the mission of each is to make it feel like home, and different things feel like home for different people.

Senior care coalition encourages visits

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Haven Grade School Principal Laurel Scott said that the school kicked off their December to Remember on Friday.

"December to Remember is really an opportunity, not only for students, but for staff, just to focus on someone other than themselves," Scott said. "Whether it's donating mittens to the caring closet at the middle school or simply writing a note to a staff member that they have been thinking about."

The kids can also participate in change wars to help out a fellow Wildcat.

"This year, we are dedicating our change wars to Evan Bartholomew, a student at the high school," Scott said. "If people have looked online, he is in need of a new heart. We're pretty excited to be able to do this for him. Last year, we had a student who was diagnosed with leukemia and that's where our change wars went to. You know, you always hope that you don't have a cause, but when there is one, it's really nice to see our community come together."

Change wars isn't about who raises the most money, or how much it weighs.

Change, your nickels, your dimes, your quarters, that is positive," Scott said. "Any dollar bills bring your grade negative. We do it by grade level. These kids will come in and they might be in second grade, but they are going to put two or three dollars in sixth grade, because nobody wants the sixth graders to win, so the sixth grade will be negative. They might have brought in $50 in change, but then they have $75 in cash that was put in their bucket and they are negative."

The school has a caroling event on the Friday before they go on break and that's when they announce which grade won and give the contributions to the family.

The city hosted its first ever "lighted Christmas parade" downtown on Saturday, Dec.2. Various lighted parade floats, cars, motorcycles and side-by-sides traveled down Main St. from Ave B. to 7th Ave.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce is continuing its December work with the Annual Meeting on Monday on the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

"We're going to have a great speaker," said Chamber CEO Debra Teufel. "Retired Lt. Col Scott Mann. He was part of what was called Pineapple Express. You'll hear all about his experience and his military career."

The event will kick off at 3:45 p.m. in Sunflower South with a sponsor expo that is open to the public. Doors will open for dinner at 6 p.m. Then, next on the docket is the Chamber's monthly membership breakfast on Wednesday, Dec. 13.

"It is the membership breakfast where we honor all of our community benefit organizations, the non-profits in the community that help really serve the community in a philanthropic way," Teufel said. "The inspiring speaker that we have to honor them is Julia Fabris McBride, who was one of the co-authors of the book that was released this year, When Everyone Leads, co-authored with Ed O'Malley."

That event will be from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Dec. 13 at the Sand Hills Event Center at 4601 North Plum.

The chamber also is looking ahead to the 2024 legislative session to consider what priorities might be needed for growth in the area.

"We have been meeting with KDOT, specifically about transportation dollars that would help enhance the K-96 and Highway 50 corridor to serve this as an industrial site," Teufel said. "That will definitely be part of our agenda. We have the opportunity to meet with all of our state legislators on Dec. 11 at a meeting at Hutchinson Community College, we always appreciate that&nbsp;Hutchinson Community College coordinates that day."

The 2024 legislative session will start in the second week of January.

Chamber continuing work as year comes down the stretch

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Major Paul James with the Salvation Army in Hutchinson said that they are still looking for bell ringers between now and Christmas.

"Ringing the bell, when people think about the Salvation Army, they think about the toys and the food that we give to people, but how many times do you see a bell ringer when you walk in and out of a store," James said. "We need volunteers for that."

You can be entered for a nice prize, as well, if you sign up at&nbsp;<a href="https://registertoring.com/">https://registertoring.com/</a>.

"It's the second year that we're doing the Chiefs challenge," James said. "Every two hours that you volunteer to ring bells, your name gets put into the drawing and then you can win two tickets to the Dec. 31 Cincinnati Bengals game."

According to Register to Ring, the Red Kettle started in 1891 in San Francisco.&nbsp;Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee&nbsp;resolved to provide a free Christmas dinner for the destitute and poverty-stricken.

As he pondered the issue, his thoughts drifted back to his sailor days in Liverpool, England. He remembered how at Stage Landing, where the boats came in, there was a large, iron kettle called "Simpson's Pot" into which passers-by tossed a coin or two to help the poor.

The next day Captain McFee placed a similar pot at the Oakland Ferry Landing at the foot of Market Street. Beside the pot, he placed a sign that read, "Keep the Pot Boiling." He soon had the money to see that the needy people were properly fed at Christmas.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann wants work to continue on a long-term solution for farmers, even though a stopgap measure has been passed.

"We've got to remember why we do farm bills in the first place and why they are five years," Mann said. "They are five years to provide some certainty for producers. Long enough to be certain, but short enough that it can be opened up and looked at to reflect the times. If you look at farming conditions, specifically input costs today versus 2018, when the current farm bill was passed, you know things are dramatically different. That's why five years is the appropriate length."

What Mann wants to make sure doesn't happen is a constant line of stopgap measures, as has happened often with the federal budget as a whole.

"I've been very frustrated with how slow this process has been," Mann said. "It has been extended for one year. The current farm bill now expires Sept. 30 of next year. Just because it got extended a couple weeks ago, doesn't mean that we shouldn't be working on and pushing hard for a five year bill. That's exactly what I've been doing."

Further, it is important that the farm bill, which has traditionally been a bipartisan piece of legislation, doesn't get bogged down in even year electoral politics.

"If you delay too far, then we get into the election, then into the lame duck period," Mann said. "There's no reason we just don't get this thing done right now. That's what we've been jumping up and down, telling everybody who will listen why that's the case and it's full steam ahead."

Agricultural groups across the political spectrum are urging that a new five-year bill be worked on in early 2024.

Mann continuing to advocate for five-year farm bill

BUHLER, Kan. — Residents and businesses in Eureka will soon have access to high-speed, reliable fiber-optic internet thanks to a grant awarded to IdeaTek Telcom, a Kansas-owned and Buhler-based internet provider with a mission of delivering fiber to underserved areas.&nbsp;

This significant investment, fueled by an $880,000 grant from the Kansas Office of Broadband Development, will connect nearly 1,500 premises in Eureka, helping to bridge the digital divide.

Residents and businesses in Eureka have long been struggling with substandard speeds.

Fiber internet will be a game-changer for the city, said Greenwood County Commission Vice Chairman Ben Fox.

Gov. Laura Kelly announced Monday that IdeaTek was one of eight internet service providers to receive part of the $5 million in Broadband Acceleration Grants funding. IdeaTek also received funding to build fiber to western Scott County, including the small unincorporated city of Modoc.&nbsp;The grant funding for Eureka, coupled with IdeaTek’s substantial matching investment of nearly $1.9 million will bring the project total to $2.8 million.Eureka's Digital FutureIdeaTek's grant application also received a $25,000 pledge from the Eureka Public Library, a testament to the transformative impact fiber internet will have on the community's access to information and resources. Fiber internet is essential for the modern library, which is why Library Director Connie Mitchell and her board supported IdeaTek's grant application.“We are thrilled that our community has been chosen to receive this grant, and we are looking forward to working with IdeaTek as fiber comes to Eureka,” Mitchell said “Knowing that we will finally have fast and reliable Internet for everyday library operations and to serve the information needs of our library patrons is a huge relief. We are also excited to think about future services that may be possible with fiber. We can't wait for the project to get started."IdeaTek's Mission: Internet Freedom for AllIdeaTek’s mission is to build fiber internet to every corner of Kansas, said IdeaTek Co-Founder and Chief Innovation Officer Daniel Friesen. Only fiber is robust enough to support the symmetrical upload and download speeds needed for remote work, education and healthcare.“Rural Kansas has been historically left behind when it comes to fiber infrastructure development,” Friesen said. “Our mission of Internet Freedom means we believe all Kansans should have access to ultra-speed fiber broadband – no matter if you live in a city or on a rural dirt road. Our long-term goal is to provide fiber to as many residents as we can because fiber is hands down the best technology for high-speed broadband.“Bridging the digital divide in Kansas wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the&nbsp;Kansas Department of Commerce’s Office of Broadband Development,” Friesen added.The project will begin in 2024 and will be completed in phases.
