HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions Index released on Friday is worse than it has been in years.

"This is our survey of manufacturing supply managers in nine states in the Mid-America Region, which includes Kansas," Goss said. "The reading was dipping into what we normally think of as recession territory. Not only that, we had a really significant upturn in our wholesale price gauge. All in all, it was not a good report, especially against the ones we've had.

The overall index drops to its lowest level since June 2020 at 42.2. 50 is growth neutral.

"Since April of last year, the region has lost about 12,000 manufacturing jobs," Goss said. "These jobs have been going away since April. It's just, we're just now seeing it in our overall number. We've been seeing it in our hiring index, which has been coming down."

Looking ahead six months, economic optimism, as captured by the November Business Confidence Index, increased to a weak 35.8 from October’s anemic 25.0.

"This manufacturing sector, they are seeing prices of products they are purchasing to go into the manufacturing process moving higher," Goss said. "They are also cutting back, but it really hasn't spilled over into the broader economy just yet."

The number does concern Goss, as a sustained reading lower than&nbsp;43.0 for the full survey would point to a recession ahead for the regional manufacturing sector. He still needs to see a few more months of data before drawing that conclusion.

Goss: Manufacturing survey 'not good'

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County District Attorney Tom Stanton said the 23rd annual toy drive for his office starts on Monday. If you live in the Hutchinson area, you're probably not far from a box where you can drop off a new, unwrapped toy for a child.

"We will have boxes at the District Attorney's Office on the fifth floor of the courthouse," said Stanton. "On the first floor of the courthouse near the east doors, the Reno County Annex building at 125 West First, the Reno County Sheriff's Office, at the courthouse and at the Correctional Facility, the Department of Aging and RCAT facility at 120 West Avenue B, Reno County Public Works at 600 Scott Boulevard in South Hutchinson, Reno County Youth Services at 219 West 2nd Ave., the Reno County Health Department this year, at 209 West 2nd, the Hutchinson Police Department, and Bin Shoppin at 118 West 2nd Ave. That manager reached out to us and offered to put some boxes up. We're getting bigger."

Once the toys are collected, they are distributed to non-profit organizations with a need.&nbsp;The local group also gets supplemental toys in from the Toys for Tots Foundation, to help out if they run short of toys or don't have the monetary means of purchasing them.

"This is how we give back to the community and how we relate in a different way," Stanton said. "Working as prosecutors, we work with victims and with people who are really in bad shape throughout the year. We need these kinds of activities to refocus and to help us help the community. We're excited to be able to provide new and unwrapped toys for underprivileged children in the community. We would appreciate anybody's help."

Older children are sometimes hard to get donations for.

"We really get toys for infants through, oh, seventh or eighth grade," Stanton said. "When you get up into the high school years, it's hard to find things, toys for older youth, or fun things for older youth are often more expensive. We do need those. We have a need for that this year, especially."

The toy drive is Monday through Friday, Dec. 4-8.

PRATT, Kan. — Pratt Police caught a robbery suspect Friday afternoon.&nbsp;

According to a social media report, they located the man inside the lobby at People's Bank at 202 South Main and he was arrested immediately without incident. 

The suspect was unarmed and cooperated with law enforcement. 

He was taken to the Pratt County Jail and booked for robbery. 

“I appreciate the quick response of our officers in handling the potentially dangerous situation," said Chief Nate Humble. "The calm exhibited by professional bank personnel and the quick response of your officers made this arrest very effective, with no one hurt. 

Criminal charges are pending a complete investigation of the incident. 

Chief Humble appreciates the assistance of the Pratt County Sheriff’s Office, Pratt County Dispatch and the Kansas Highway Patrol in the case.&nbsp;

Pratt police make Friday robbery arrest

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Gas prices in Kansas are now well below $3 a gallon on average.

"Today's average of $2.89 in Kansas is the lowest we've been in quite some time," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "We've actually taken our place back in the top ten cheapest gas prices in the nation, coming in at eighth lowest."

Area county averages are generally at or below $3 a gallon.

"Crude oil prices have been kind of jumping around a little bit," Steward said. "Thursday, they were approaching the $80 per barrel range, but then again today, we're back in the $76 range."

This continues a trend that started in the late summer and early fall of falling prices both in Kansas and across the country.

"We are seeing what we typically see, in terms of seasonal price drops at the pumps," Steward said. "The national average has fallen or stayed flat every day since Sept. 19. We're going on two and a half months of falling gas prices, which is certainly nice to see if you're a driver."

So far, the continued turmoil in the Middle East has not spilled over to countries that would have an effect on oil markets.

Gas prices continue to tumble

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Downtown Master Plan was unveiled for the City of Hutchinson at a meeting at Memorial Hall Thursday night. The meeting did not have a formal presentation, rather it was broken down into eight focus areas that people could walk around the room and digest and then give their feedback on.&nbsp;

"The most important thing to do right now is take all of the information that we've gathered," said Hutchinson Interim City Manager Mary Grace Clements. "Now, we have to come up with a priority and an action plan, because there's funding that has to be secured to make this all come to fruition. The next step is look at all of this, where do we start, what's the priority, how do we fund it, not only for what we want to do now, but for the entire plan and program. That's our goal."

There were sticky notes and places to put them by each of the areas Olsson Studios had already mapped out. In other words, they don't feel their work is done yet, and Vice Mayor Greg Fast is looking forward to that additional feedback. It is important to make sure that whatever is done, making downtown a place that is well lit at night is important.

"That's one of the first things on my list," Fast said. "I live downtown and we could have much better lighting just on the streetlights downtown. That will brighten everything up. There's a lot of little things that we can do, maybe they are a part of this plan, but things that we know we need to get working on right now."

City Human Relations Director Dave Sotelo believes that if the goals set out in the Master Plan are followed, it will help raise the standard for the people in the area, without pricing them out of living downtown.

"It's very clear on the need for market rate housing and affordable housing," Sotelo said. "We stay true to those priorities. Gentrification's always a concern when you come to a neighborhood and you reinvest and you make it more attractive to live, but I think if we include people from the neighborhood, look at the Wiley Building, that was, actually, who is moving into that area is people who can afford to live in that area, because it might be expensive to live elsewhere. It can be beneficial for folks who normally can't afford regular rent to provide more opportunities for housing."

The final report from Olsson Studios will likely take a few weeks to get, though there wasn't a ton of new feedback given Thursday based on the notes left on the walls.

Property tax relief details available

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Clayworks at Disability Supports has several events lined up for the holiday season, the first of those is this Saturday from 3-5 p.m.

"All of our 31 artists are going to be here,"Clayworks Studio Program Manager Kristine McKeown said. "Not all of them but the majority of them, and we do a reception. We are going to have hors d'oeuvres and Santa is going to be here."&nbsp;

The Clayworks at Disability Supports plans for the holidays

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reins of Hope Therapeutic Riding is holding their Jingle and Mingle open house on Dec. 9, 2023.

The event will take place at their indoor facility at 2116 North Obee Road east of Hutchinson. They plan on serving chili and homemade cinnamon rolls from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be live Christmas music over the noon hour, and an opportunity to take pictures with the horses and also a silent auction. The horse pictures and silent auction will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Reins of Hope Therapeutic Riding program has been serving children and adults since 1994. Their mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals using horses.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Reins of Hope is able to collaborate with area school districts providing academics on horseback to enhance learning and they serve clients from many  Kansas counties including Reno, Rice, McPherson, Pratt, Harper and Sedgwick.&nbsp;

Riders who come from Disabilty Supports of the Great Plains enjoy the recreational and exercise benefits of horse therapy while working to improve their social and life skills.

Reins of Hope also works with&nbsp;Emberhope out of Newton providing service for children in foster care.&nbsp;

They also do a&nbsp;women's  exercise program that focuses on rehabilitation from various health challenges including stroke and MS.

They also support Veterans that have served our nation with the Hope for Heroes program.&nbsp;

Also, over the summer, they have the&nbsp;Read Ride and Exercise program, where they collaborate with Haven 4-H members to foster student relationships while focusing on reading, communication and social skills. Riders each take home a book at the end of the session.

Reins of Hope is a member of The Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship.

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — Reno County Public Works announced on Thursday that Pretty Prairie Road between Whiteside Road and Dean Road has reopened, as the city ditch and culvert repair is now complete.

Pretty Prairie Road back open

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.&nbsp;— The National Sports Media Association (NSMA) announced its award finalists for sportscaster of the year and sportswriter of the year on Wednesday.

EAGLE Media sports director Glen Grunwald was named one of the three finalists for the Kansas Sportscaster of the Year for 2023. Grunwald is joined by Brian Hanni (Jayhawk Sports Network/Learfield, Lawrence) and Pat Strathman (ESPN Wichita, 92.3-FM).

“To say you could have blown me over with a feather would be an understatement when I received the text announcement from the NSMA," Grunwald said. "To be included in the same breath with both Brian and Pat is truly an honor to say the least. To be from a medium market area and to be even a finalist is exciting, I’m truly speechless.”

The three finalists for Kansas Sportswriter of the Year include Arne Green (Topeka Capital-Journal, Topeka), Michael Swain (24/7 Sports, Lawrence) and Taylor Eldridge (Wichita Eagle, Wichita).

On December 1, NSMA members are emailed a link to the final ballot and have until December 31 to make their selections for their state, as well as national and Hall of Fame categories.

Beginning the first week of January, all winners are notified by phone. A news release is sent out during the second week of January, announcing the full slate of award winners.

Winners receive their awards in late June during a ceremony in Winston-Salem, NC.

KDOT bids approved for local projects

HAVEN, Kan. — According to Haven Grade School Principal Laurel Scott, the process of starting a Bee Club at the school is taking flight.

"What I love about it, is that it is completely student led," Scott said. "This started at our Farm to Fork day, which we have every fall. We had some students from Prairie Hills Middle School in Buhler come. They actually have a Bee Club, too, so we had some students who were inspired by that. Then, again at our Haven Fall Festival, we had Marcus and Jami Richardson from Richardson Tree Service, they have bees, and we had a small group of students who sat and listened to them talk about bees. They approached one of our teachers and said, Miss Krol, we really want to have bees and we think we can do it."

The Bee Club will be for 4th through 6th graders at the school.

"It's something that I've really wanted to do for a while," Scott said. "When it's student led, it just kind of takes off a little bit better. We've applied for three grants. One of them has been fully funded. We're waiting to hear about that, but we've met with&nbsp;Marcus and Jami Richardson, the students have spoken to the middle school, they've spoken to the neighbors, they've spoken to the school board and then, most recently, they presented their idea to the Haven City Council, to ask for some changes or exceptions to the city code. I think that the city council is working with us to keep bees on our school property, so it will be really, really neat."

Getting the red tape cut and the funding in place may take a little bit.

"We will get our hives and hopefully have them off the ground and up and running this spring," Scott said. "We have our first meeting on Monday, Dec. 4. We're really just going to start learning about what it means to keep bees. Everything that I've learned so far is that it's not just a set up the hive and walk away, which is kind of what I thought it was at first. I definitely think it's a labor of love."

The Bee Club will meet monthly to start as they get up and running.

Haven Grade Bee Club already teaching students

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the unit block of East 30th Avenue on the south side. 

The very first A&amp;W Root Beer Drive-In  in Hutch was built in May of 1956 by William Owens at 27 E. 30th. The first photo shows the drive-in on an August 1959 evening.

The second photo shows one of the carhops in action the same day.

In 1962, Gordon and Marge Troyer purchased the business and continued there until 1967 when they moved the drive-in to 206 W. 4th. They were only there until the end of 1968. 

In 1969, Ron and Jean Peterson purchased the old 27 E. 30th property, razed the old building and built a more-modern A&amp;W Root Beer Drive-In there again. That A&amp;W outlet was there until the end of 1978. 

Since then, a small office building has occupied the property. The third photo shows the 27 E. 30th property today, with The Trust Company of Kansas and A New You Day Spa residing there. The building is owned by the Shamar 1300 L.L.C.

📷 Throwback Thursday: A&W Root Beer Drive-In - Vol. 46

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel told Hutch Post that the process of development for the new industrial park intended to go along K-96 south of South Hutchinson continues.

"We do have interest," Teufel said. "We started seeing larger projects going back about two to three years ago. That really guided us that, without a large site like this, we wouldn't be in the game on so many projects that we were just having to pass over because we didn't have a contiguous 300-500 acre parcel. Some things that have happened recently, we have been pitching it on some major projects, which really then made us aware that without the water and sewer solution, we really can't be in the game."

Teufel sees that solution coming in the near future.

"That's why the cities and the county have all been at the table helping solve that challenge together," Teufel said. "The city studied how they develop water lines under the river to get it to the site and what the cost for that would be. Our goal is that we find a future tenant that helps partner in that construction cost. It is probably the most sizable, outside of electric utility, it's the most sizable utility piece that we have to solve. The discussion that we have had so far is, in order for the city to really take that on, there has to be a plan for it to be part of the city of Hutchinson at some point. Our next step that we've been working as landowners, with the neighboring landowners, is applying to petition the city for it to be annexed into the City of Hutchinson. That would be the first step in the city being able to deliver that infrastructure."

The thought is to get that done before the end of the year.

"You're probably going to see showing up on a future City agenda, that petition, with us as owners and with the other two owners that we're partnering with, for that petition to state that we wish to be annexed into the City of Hutch," Teufel said. "Then, a notification has to go to the county for the county to also weigh in on that. That would happen at a future meeting and then it would come back to the City for the final resolution and ordinance to be adopted. That is one of the next steps and then there will probably be some action at a future date related to infrastructure."

The reason the City of Hutchinson has to be involved is because South Hutchinson does not have enough remaining water rights to meet a park that size's needs, but Hutchinson does, if the ones they have yet to perfect are used for that purpose.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Mary Magdalene house at 7201 East 4th east of Hutchinson, is hosting its 3rd Annual Christmas Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9.

Homemade Jams, Jellies, and Pie Filling will be available by donation.

You can shop for locally hand crafted goods including tasty treats &amp; eats, Christmas ornaments, items to wear, and artwork. 

There will also be wearable Mary Magdalene items including t-shirts, sweatshirts &amp; aprons.

International Association of Fairs and Expositions

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Nathan McClanahan, Kansas State Fair, was recognized as a graduate of the Institute of Fair Management at the 2023 International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE) Convention and Trade Show held in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Launched in 2007, the Institute consists of a series of courses covering the areas of core competency necessary for today’s industry professionals and volunteers involved in the production of their agricultural fair. Courses include management, risk management, marketing, programming, operations, and year-round facility usage.

“Nathan was among 26 individuals who met all of the Institute of Fair Management requirements to move to graduate status. Currently, the Institute has 240 enrollees, all at various stages within their Institute experience,” Lori Hart, CFE, Director of Education and Member Services, said.

“This milestone is just a stepping stone for more successes to come! Every day is a new opportunity to change your life and be who you want to be,” McClanahan said.
