HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College will conduct an emergency preparedness training exercise Wednesday morning on its main campus in partnership with the Hutchinson Police Department.
The exercise is scheduled to begin at approximately 9:55 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, and is expected to last about 20 minutes. The training will involve several buildings on the main campus.
College officials said members of the public may notice an increased law enforcement presence during the exercise as Hutchinson Police officers participate in the training.
As part of the realistic training scenario, simulated sounds of gunfire using blanks may be heard on or near campus. College officials emphasized that the sounds and law enforcement activity are part of the planned exercise and do not represent an actual emergency.
Signs will be posted around campus notifying students, employees and visitors that a law enforcement training exercise is underway.
The exercise is part of Hutchinson Community College's ongoing efforts to prepare students, faculty and staff for emergency situations. It will also give the college, Campus Safety and local law enforcement an opportunity to evaluate emergency response procedures in a coordinated setting.
Anyone who sees emergency personnel on campus or hears activity associated with the exercise Wednesday morning should be aware that it is part of the scheduled training.
