Life on the farm has never been easy. Long hours, unpredictable weather and volatile markets are part of the job, but in recent years, wheat growers and farmers across the country have faced a wave of challenges that go beyond the fields. Farming is more than an occupation; it is a way of life. But it is also one of the most stressful professions in America. Studies show suicide rates among farmers are two to five times higher than the national average. At the same time, rural communities often lack adequate mental health services, leaving producers to carry their burdens alone.

National surveys reveal that three out of four rural adults believe reducing stigma around mental health is critical. Yet cultural barriers, especially the perception that asking for help is a weakness, continue to silence conversations. For too long, resilience has been defined only as pushing through. True resilience also means recognizing when support is needed.

Farm groups, nonprofits and mental health advocates are working to break that silence. Indiana farmland prices are hitting record highs this year, even though crop prices are extremely low.&nbsp; The average price of top-quality farm ground hit $14,826 dollars an acre.&nbsp;

That's a three percent increase from just one year ago.&nbsp; This is interesting.&nbsp; Purdue University did the math, and farmland rent per bushel of corn was $1.32.&nbsp; The cash price for corn is running around four dollars.&nbsp; 

This study didn't specify if it was farmers or investors that was buying the farmland.&nbsp;

Well, now the President of the National Corn Growers submitted comments on the investigation into Brazil’s unfair trading practices, specifically on ethanol.&nbsp; 

Brazil is actively trying to crush the American corn industry by directly and indirectly hurt American corn farmers.&nbsp; This has been happening for many years, and American corn farmers want it stopped.

Ag Minute: Ethanol and Brazil's unfair trading practices

The United States could have another trade deal.&nbsp; 

This time, it's with the European Union.&nbsp; &nbsp;The EU intends to eliminate tariffs on all U.S. industrial goods and provide preferential market access of U.S. seafood and agricultural products.&nbsp; 

That would include dairy products, fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, soybean oil, pork, and other products.&nbsp; 

To top it off, European companies committed $600 billion dollars in U.S. sectors for the next three years.

Ag Minute: EU trade deal

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association is celebrating a legal victory.

  That's because they landed protections for cattle farmers and ranchers from unnecessary and ridiculous air emissions reporting requirements.  For the past few years, they had to hire lawyers and sue in court to stop the mandate to file complex, overreaching reports with the federal government about emissions from cattle under not one but two emission laws that are on the books.&nbsp;

AG Minute: Emission reporting for farmers and ranchers

Earlier this week, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins alongside Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, Senator Marsha Blackburn, Senator Bill Hagerty, Representative John Rose, and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden, announced USDA will no longer fund taxpayer dollars for solar panels on productive farmland or allow solar panels manufactured by foreign adversaries to be used in USDA projects. 

Subsidized solar farms have made it more difficult for farmers to access farmland by making it more expensive and less available. Within the last 30 years, Tennessee alone has lost over 1.2 million acres of farmland and is expected to lose 2 million acres by 2027. This problem is not just in Tennessee, since 2012, solar panels on farmland nationwide have increased by nearly 50%. That is why the Department is taking action.&nbsp;

“Our prime farmland should not be wasted and replaced with green new deal subsidized solar panels. It has been disheartening to see our beautiful farmland displaced by solar projects, especially in rural areas that have strong agricultural heritage. One of the largest barriers of entry for new and young farmers is access to land. Subsidized solar farms have made it more difficult for farmers to access farmland by making it more expensive and less available,”&nbsp;said Secretary Brooke Rollins. “We are no longer allowing businesses to use your taxpayer dollars to fund solar projects on prime American farmland, and we will no longer allow solar panels manufactured by foreign adversaries to be used in our USDA-funded projects.”&nbsp;

“Tennesseans know that our farmland is our national security, our economic future, and our children's heritage. We were honored to welcome Secretary Rollins to Tennessee this week, and I’m grateful for her leadership to defend America’s farmland from foreign adversaries and protect our food supply,”&nbsp;said Tennessee Governor Bill Lee.&nbsp;

“Secretary Rollins understands that food security is national security, and preserving prime farmland for agricultural production is a key component of protecting our food supply. I look forward to working with her and this Administration to ensure any incentives for renewable energy projects have commonsense safeguards in place that provide options for producers while protecting our most productive farmland,”&nbsp;said <b>House Committee on Agriculture Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson (PA-15).&nbsp;</b>

“Transforming prime farmland into fields of solar panels drives up land prices on behalf of foreign investments, and limits production capabilities for surrounding farmers and ranchers. Taxpayers should not have to subsidize the transition of productive and useful farmland into a desert of solar panels,”&nbsp;said <b>Senator Roger Marshall.</b>&nbsp;“I stand with Secretary Rollins and the Trump administration, who continue to show that they are fighting for rural America and putting our farmers and ranchers first.”&nbsp;

"I strongly support Secretary Rollins’ action today implementing President Trump’s executive order de-prioritizing undependable energy sources, and protecting our prime farmland for much/needed food production. Ending wasteful taxpayer Green New Scam subsidies that have driven up energy costs and taken farmland out of production are long overdue. This action protects farmland so important to our Eastern Shore economy, strengthens American agriculture, and puts our energy independence first,”&nbsp;said <b>Representative Andy Harris (MD-01).</b>&nbsp;

“Green New Deal subsidies have distorted the energy market and supplanted American farmland. USDA is taking decisive action which complements policies I supported in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, ending the misuse of taxpayer dollars and upholding our national security interests in energy infrastructure. I appreciate Secretary Rollins’ leadership in restoring common sense to these USDA programs,”&nbsp;said Representative Adrian Smith (NE-03).&nbsp;

This action will rapidly eliminate the market distortions and costs imposed on taxpayers by reducing energy subsidies and builds upon the repeal of and modifications to wind, solar, and other “green” energy tax credits in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. It will further USDA’s determination to end taxpayer support for unaffordable and unreliable “green” energy sources and ensure the supply chain consists of American products and manufacturing.&nbsp;

Effective immediately, USDA will implement the following programmatic actions:&nbsp;

• For the USDA Rural Development Business and Industry (B&amp;I) Guaranteed Loan Program wind and solar projects are not eligible.

•For the USDA Rural Development Rural Energy for America Program Guaranteed Loan Program (REAP Guaranteed Loan Program), USDA will ensure that American farmers, ranchers and producers utilizing wind and solar energy sources will install units that are right-sized for their facilities. If project applications include ground mount solar photovoltaic systems larger than 50kW or ground mount solar photovoltaic systems that cannot document historical energy usage, they will no longer be eligible for the REAP Guaranteed Loan Program, and priority points will no longer be given for REAP grants.

Food price increases leveled off in the latest economic report out from the government.&nbsp; That hasn't happened in two years.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Here are the&nbsp;categories that were measured.&nbsp; Fresh fruit,&nbsp; poultry, &nbsp;fish and seafood , dairy products , and cereal and bakery products.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Retail prices fell in the first six months for fats and oils and fresh vegetables. Egg prices averaged 38.5 percent higher between January and June 2025 than they did in all of 2024, but that was because of the flu outbreak that killed millions of chickens.&nbsp;

Ag Minute: Food prices 

Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) is expanding its agricultural education offerings with the launch of a new John Deere Technician Program, created through a partnership with PrairieLand Partners and AgriVision Equipment.&nbsp;

The program, the second&nbsp;in Kansas, will allow students to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree while receiving specialized training to become certified John Deere service technicians.&nbsp;

“This has been a project in the works for several years,” said Sheldon Stewart, department co-chair of the Agriculture, Business, Computers &amp; Technology Department at HutchCC. “When students complete the two-year program, they’ll graduate with both a degree and John Deere certification, ready to step into the workforce.”&nbsp;

The program is designed to go beyond the college’s existing one-year diesel program. During the first year, students will complete HutchCC’s traditional curriculum. In the second year, they will transition to John Deere-specific training, working directly on equipment and technology at PrairieLand Partners’ dealership near the U.S. 50/K-61 junction. The dealership is expanding its facilities to accommodate the program.&nbsp;

Students will gain hands-on experience alongside certified technicians both in the shop and in the field. Each student must be sponsored by a John Deere dealership, which commits to hiring the student for at least two years after graduation.&nbsp;

“This is truly a hands-on, career-driven program,” Stewart said. “Students come out with little to no debt, a high-demand certification, and a good-paying career that can last a lifetime.”&nbsp;

Industry leaders say the program addresses a critical workforce shortage. PrairieLand Partners and AgriVision, which operate dealerships across Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa, are seeking to expand their technician workforce by as much as 25 percent.&nbsp;

Stewart noted that the program also helps strengthen ties between HutchCC and the agricultural community. “Farmers rely on this technology to keep producing, and our students will be trained to keep that equipment running,” he said. “Agriculture isn’t going away, and this program ensures our graduates are prepared for the future—whether that’s with autonomous tractors, electric-powered combines, or other emerging technology.”&nbsp;

The first class of John Deere Technician students began on Wednesday at HutchCC’s South Campus near Yoder, with specialized training taking place at PrairieLand Partners' expanded Hutchinson facility.&nbsp;

During the first year, students will complete HutchCC’s traditional curriculum. In the second year, they will transition to John Deere-specific training, working directly on equipment and technology at PrairieLand Partners’ dealership near the U.S. 50/K-61 junction. The dealership is expanding its facilities to accommodate the program.&nbsp;</p><figure>

Each student must be sponsored by a John Deere dealership, which commits to hiring the student for at least two years after graduation.&nbsp;</p><p>“This is truly a hands-on, career-driven program,” Stewart said. “Students come out with little to no debt, a high-demand certification, and a good-paying career that can last a lifetime.”&nbsp;</p><figure>

PrairieLand Partners and AgriVision, which operate dealerships across Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa, are seeking to expand their technician workforce by as much as 25 percent.&nbsp;</p><p>Stewart noted that the program also helps strengthen ties between HutchCC and the agricultural community. “Farmers rely on this technology to keep producing, and our students will be trained to keep that equipment running,” he said. “Agriculture isn’t going away, and this program ensures our graduates are prepared for the future—whether that’s with autonomous tractors, electric-powered combines, or other emerging technology.”&nbsp;</p><p>The first class of John Deere Technician students began on Wednesday at HutchCC’s South Campus near Yoder, with specialized training taking place at PrairieLand Partners' expanded Hutchinson facility.&nbsp;</p>

August 20, 2025 - The Kansas Soybean Association is calling all soybean farmers in Kansas to enter their competitive soybean crop into the Kansas Soybean Yield Contest. Also open for entries is the statewide Kansas Soybean Value Contest, which analyzes protein, oil and other soybean qualities. Strong participation across the state provides a snapshot of growing conditions in each region and allows friendly competition among peers.

“This contest allows farmers to showcase the practices that maximize yield on their farm” said Dr. Sarah Lancaster, K-State Weed Extension Specialist and an Association board member. “To see how farmers manage challenges to have successful crops in conditions they can’t control is always impactful to see.”

Agricultural sciences company FMC is stepping up this year, joining the Kansas Soybean Commission as a sponsor of the contests. 

“This contest is a great opportunity for us to support KSA and we see the value it brings farmers,” said Brian Laverentz from FMC. “Raising top yielding soybeans is often a systems approach. Many of these farmers rely on FMC products to be effective in raising their crops and we want to show our appreciation for that. We love the comradery these contests bring and getting to recognize and honor farmers across the state.” 

Yield contest districts are determined by region, tillage method and irrigation status, with a total of 18 districts in consideration. Farmers may enter multiple categories, but only one entry per field.

Eligible fields must consist of at least five contiguous acres as verified by the Farm Service Agency, GPS printout or manual measurement. A non-relative witness, either Kansas State Research and Extension personnel or a specified designee, must be present at harvest and should ensure that the combine grain hopper is empty prior to harvest. Official elevator-scale tickets with moisture percentage and foreign matter included must accompany entries to be considered.

The Kansas Soybean Commission sponsors a monetary prize for the top three finishers in each district, as well as an additional $1,000 for the overall dryland and irrigated winners and any who top the new 126.6 bushel-per-acre record, set last year by McClain Family Farms, LLC. Each district winner receives $300, second receives $200, and third receives $100.

Individuals looking to submit a value contest entry should send a 20-ounce sample, which is evaluated by Ag Processing, Inc., to determine the value. Monetary awards are also given to the three highest-value entries.

Farmers may enter both the yield and value contests. The top yield entry and top value entry, as well as one randomly drawn entry who enters both contests, will earn a trip to the 2026 Commodity Classic set for February 25-27 in San Antonio. All participants receive a T-shirt.

Ag Minute: FFA milestone 

President Donald Trump is signaling a shift in U.S. biofuel policy, proposing to cut back or completely eliminate federal incentives for importing foreign biofuel. Instead, the administration aims to boost production from American-based biofuel producers, a move that could strengthen domestic agriculture but faces strong opposition from oil refiners and trade groups.&nbsp;

The debate has left many U.S. farmers, particularly corn growers in the Midwest, both hopeful and frustrated. Corn producers see major opportunities in the growing market for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), which can be made from ethanol. The demand for SAF is expected to surge as airlines seek cleaner alternatives, and one of the first facilities in the U.S. capable of producing ethanol-based jet fuel is preparing to roll out its first batch.&nbsp;

Ag Minute:  Pesticides no longer major threat 

WASHINGTON (AP) —A Federal court on Thursday ordered the Department of Agriculture to restore grants to farming organizations.

The court ruled that six grants must be restored to organizations that lost their funding after several Trump administration Executive Orders and at the direction of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The ruling “sets a strong precedent that could allow hundreds of other grants to be challenged and reinstated,” environmental nonprofit Earthjustice said in a statement.

Plaintiffs included groups that support causes like tree planting, climate-friendly farming practices and growing food in underserved communities.

The total value of the terminated grants was over $34 million, the attorneys said.

“In the wake of this ruling, we hope the USDA stops arbitrarily cancelling grants and contracts without an understanding of the work being done,” said Erin McKee, community food systems program director at the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, one of the plaintiffs.

WASHINGTON<b>&nbsp;</b>–&nbsp;U.S. Senator Jerry Moran – a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry – joined Sens. John Thune (R-S.D.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Tina Smith (D-Minn.) in introducing the&nbsp;<i>Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) Improvement and Flexibility Act</i>. 

The legislation would bolster CRP by improving access to grazing, maximizing enrollment options for producers and expediting emergency haying in response to drought and other weather-related disaster events.

“Equipping farmers and ranchers with improved access to CRP resources is crucial to the sustainability of the agricultural economy in Kansas,”<b>&nbsp;said Sen. Moran.&nbsp;</b>“This bipartisan legislation grants greater flexibility for producers in Kansas and across the country to improve their economic stability while conserving our nation’s farmland, wildlife habitats and water supply for future generations to benefit from and enjoy.”

Make CRP grazing a more attractive option by providing cost-share for the establishment of grazing infrastructure – including fencing and water distribution – on all CRP practices and contracts if grazing is included in the approved conservation plan.&nbsp;

Increase the CRP annual payment limitation from $50,000, which was established in 1985, to $125,000 to account for inflation and rising land values and provide landowners with more CRP enrollment options to ensure resources are appropriately conserved.&nbsp;

Reinstate mid-contract management cost-share payments for activities that are not related to haying or grazing.&nbsp;

Permanently establish the State Acres for Wildlife Enhancement practice under Continuous CRP.&nbsp;

Create flexibility for producers by allowing emergency haying on CRP acres when certain conditions are met and in consultation with state technical committees.&nbsp;

Kan. U.S. Senator helps introduce bill to bolster Conservation Reserve Program

It's not a threat when you mean what you say, and President Trump has told Mexico and Europe he'll put a 30% tariff on imports starting August first.

 That's because negotiations on a trade deal are not going well.&nbsp; &nbsp;The EU and Mexico both said that it's unfair, but they did promise keep negotiating.&nbsp;

 Mexico accounts for 69% percent of America’s vegetable imports and 51% percent of fresh fruit imports.

S.A.F. Stands for "sustainable aviation fuel", and it's been in the news a lot lately.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Mexico now says it's going to try to produce its own sustainable aviation fuel by 2030.&nbsp; &nbsp;The first step will be to outline a plan of actions, including research and development, economic incentives, and feasibility.&nbsp; &nbsp;

However, Mexico would need $49 billion in U.S. investments to develop at least one SAF production facility, and that may prove to be challenging.

Ag Minute: Sustainable aviation fuel

This may be some good news for soybean farmers and the prices they receive.&nbsp; 

American biofuel manufacturers will use over half of all the soybean oil produced in the U.S. next year.&nbsp; &nbsp;The new higher blending mandates will stimulate more demand, and cut back on foreign biofuel imports, which could lead to good news for farmers.&nbsp; 

The EPA raised blending mandates under the Renewable Fuel Standard and proposed to cut the number of RIN generated for imported renewable fuels from foreign imports.

AG Minute: Biofuel and soybean oil demand

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Kansas cotton fields are entering the critical squaring phase, so Kansas State University agronomist Logan Simon and entomologist Anthony Zukoff say timely scouting will be essential to protect yield potential.

“Overall, Kansas cotton acres are down this year like most of the US cotton belt and the cotton we have is generally behind in development compared to normal,” Simon said. “Although south-central Kansas had severe storm damage that hurt the cotton down there, many were able to hold on pretty good.”

As cotton enters this key reproductive stage, as evidenced by early formation of flower buds, K-State Extension entomologist Anthony Zukoff shared the importance of monitoring for cotton fleahoppers and tarnished plant bugs, also known as lygus bugs.

“These two insects can be very detrimental to overall yield so it’s important to keep an eye out for them now,” Zukoff said.

“They are very excitable, so they can be tricky to scout for. We recommend using a drop cloth or sweep net method to determine if these insects are in the field,” Zukoff said. “Depending on the method, the threshold will be different, so we recommend using our&nbsp;<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/download/cotton-insect-pest-management-2025_MF2674">cotton insect management guide</a>&nbsp;to determine if the insect count is over that threshold.”

The cotton flea hopper is about 1/8 of an inch and lime green color, while the lygus bug is about twice the size and a tan color. Zukoff noted that control options are available if populations reach economic thresholds.

“If they do reach that threshold, all is not lost,” he said. “Producers can save their fields if they take action quickly. The important thing is to be proactive rather than reactive; get out there right now and scout.”

“The early and first position squares are the most important fruiting positions on a cotton plant as they will contribute the most to the final yield,” Simon said. “Once the plant matures, those insects will not be as much of a problem for later squares.”

Zukoff and Simon also advised corn growers to be scouting for western bean cutworm.

“The western bean cutworm is a pest of corn, specifically corn ears as they tassel,” Zukoff said.

“Western bean cutworm overwinters in the soil as pupa, and this time of year adult moths will be emerging from those pupae and laying eggs. Those eggs hatch and caterpillars make their way to the tasseling corn fields,” Zukoff said. “Once the pest gets to the field, it will eat developing kernels and cut the silks on its way up, which makes it detrimental to final yields and developing crops.”

Ag Minute: Farmland prices 

There's a new plan in place at USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.&nbsp; 

It will enhancing microbiological testing and inspection oversight of many meats and poultry products.&nbsp; Among other things, it will also give inspectors training and allow them to take action with compliance.&nbsp; 

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Rollins said that she's looking forward to continuing working closely with states and food producers to protect public health.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ag Minute:  USDA inspection plan 

With the poor ag economy, how are rural banks doing?&nbsp; 

A study by the American Bankers Association says farm banks reported stable financial performance.&nbsp; That's despite a big increase in lending to farmers and ranchers.&nbsp; 

Ed Elfmann, Senior Vice President of American Bankers Association says that rural farm banks, like ours, continue to be strong and resilient because of deep community roots and a commitment to farmers and ranchers.
