The United States and China have agreed to extend their trade truce through Jan. 10, 2027, giving negotiators two more months to pursue a broader agreement.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the extension keeps a pause on new tariffs and trade restrictions in place. The agreement follows talks between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping during Xi’s state visit to Washington.

Bessent said some Chinese trade commitments remain incomplete. China has been a strong buyer of U.S. soybeans this year, but purchases of other American agricultural products have lagged.

Farm groups are seeking a more durable agreement that improves access to the Chinese market and gives producers greater certainty. For now, the extension gives both governments more time to negotiate, but it does not settle the trade issues affecting U.S. agriculture.
