That statewide perspective comes from working shoulder to shoulder.&nbsp;

“Whether it’s research at K-State or joint market development abroad, we’re all working toward the same mission: helping farmers succeed,” Gilpin said. “We face different challenges, but we share the same fields and communities.”

The CEOs highlighted the strength of Kansas research leadership, especially through Kansas State University’s College of Agriculture. From developing wheat varieties resistant to disease and drought to improving sorghum genetics through the Center for Sorghum Improvement, farmer-funded checkoff dollars are driving real results. Investments in research partnerships across K-State departments help create practical, farmer-focused innovation.&nbsp;

“Research is the long game, but it’s also the clearest return farmers can see from their checkoff,” Gilpin said. “Every new variety, pest study or efficiency breakthrough helps keep Kansas agriculture competitive.”

Still, short-term challenges remain. Commodity prices are down across the board while input costs stay high, tightening farm margins heading into 2026. The CEOs agreed that while farmers prefer markets over aid, short-term relief may be necessary until the new farm bill provisions take effect. Roe added that Kansas producers are facing gluts in corn and soybeans, while international trade slowdowns have hit sorghum and wheat exports.

“Farmers are survivors,” York said. “Getting through this next year means focusing on efficiency, maintaining markets and making sure policy decisions reflect Kansas reality.”

Each Kansas commodity group operates a farmer-elected checkoff commission that invests producer dollars back into research, education and market development. The Kansas Wheat Commission, established in 1957 through the Kansas Wheat Act, collects a state assessment of two cents per bushel of wheat sold. Those funds support programs like the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center, international trade through U.S. Wheat Associates and research collaborations at Kansas State University.

Similarly, all four Kansas commodity commissions are funded through checkoff collection at the first point of sale. These funds are used for promotion, research and market development; however, checkoff funds aren’t used for lobbying or political advocacy; the separate dues-funded grower associations handle those efforts.

Together, Kansas’ commodity groups are proving that collaboration is one of agriculture’s greatest strengths. Farmers don’t typically just grow just one commodity but include several of the four in their crop rotations. By aligning priorities such as research, market development and policy advocacy, these groups are ensuring that farmer investments generate real returns — not just in stronger crops, but in stronger communities. Wheat Scoop: Kansas agriculture works better together

China’s agreement to purchase 180,000 metric tons of soybeans from this year’s U.S. crop could mark one of the biggest agricultural trade developments in years — and Kansas producers stand to gain in a major way.

According to Senator Roger Marshall, the deal represents roughly $15 billion in U.S. soybean exports nationwide and could generate around $1 billion annually for Kansas soybean farmers. Kansas sorghum producers are also expected to benefit, with an estimated additional $1 billion in sorghum sales.

“Kansans grow about half of the entire sorghum crop for the country, and believe it or not, China typically purchases about 80 percent of that,” one official said. “This is the biggest news we’ve had in agriculture in years.”

The deal, reached during President Donald Trump’s recent overseas visit, is being hailed as a breakthrough in reopening key markets in China and Southeast Asia. The agreement is also seen as a potential boost for other major Kansas industries, including aerospace.

"China is sitting there. They can buy Boeing jets, or they can buy Air France jets” Marshall said. "We're the ones here that are buying all of your T shirts and tennis shoes and your televisions and your iPhones, all these types of things. So, I think it's going to mean a lot to to multiple industries across the state of Kansas, agriculture and aerospace, leading the way"

Beyond agriculture, the agreement may signal a broader thaw in U.S.-China relations. Marshall believes that President Xi Jinping is expected to hold additional talks with President Trump.&nbsp; &nbsp;

"I don't doubt that President Xi will make some type of a trip here to America, and then, as these other world conferences happen from time to time that they're both there, I expect them to build upon this relationship." Marshall said.

Some observers say the move could also help stabilize global markets and ease tensions across Southeast Asia. "You know when there is, when there is world peace, the entire economy, the world economy grows as well." Marshall added.&nbsp;

China's soybean purchase could bring $1B to Kansas ag economy annually

It seems to have taken longer than usual for fall to arrive this year. Finally, the predominate winds have shifted to the north, bringing the cooler temperatures with them. Soon those winds will carry a killing frost with them sending much of the natural world into dormancy.

This all seems delayed in part because of the 80-plus degree days in mid-October. Also, because the cottonwood trees in the yard are still clinging to a significant portion of their leaves, which are usually gone by now. The oak and sycamore leaves are just starting to turn so they’re on track to fall by Thanksgiving.

While most plants will stop growing soon and crickets will cease chirping, there will still be plenty of work around the house these next few weeks. The lawnmower will be put away for the season, replaced by the leaf blower and rake. Eventually I’ll have to set up the ladder to clean out the gutters and string Christmas lights.

Hoses will be disconnected, drained and stowed away to prevent the cold winter winds from freezing faucets. There are flowerbeds that need a good once over as well, taking care not to disturb any seed heads that can feed the birds that don’t fly south.

After a summer of heavy use, I’ll give the grill a good cleaning, but it won’t be put away. There’s no temperature that’s too cold for cooking over a direct flame, but the grill does lose some of its luster to the expanded menu that arrives with the north winds.

Still, as much as I enjoy cooking outdoors, there are just certain meals that are more appropriate when the air conditioner is turned off and you welcome a kitchen warmed by an oven baking throughout the day. From casseroles and pot roasts to stews and fresh-baked bread, comfort foods are a bright spot as the days grow shorter.

While my family will enjoy all of those, I most enjoy this season for the soups. While you can create a beef stew or chicken noodle soup rather quickly from canned ingredients, they’re better if time isn’t a concern. There’s nothing like the aroma of a simmering stock and knowing that as each hour goes by, the flavors are increasing.

Gumbos, bisques, chowders, consommé and more are all on the menu during soup season. No matter the variety, soup can be economical and versatile from a thin broth to a hearty chili. While I personally prefer thick, savory soups, especially if they begin with a roux, broth-based ones are best for getting over the flu.

Soup is also a great way to use up what’s left from other meals, whether it’s creating stock from the marrow in chicken and beef bones or using up any vegetables on hand before they spoil.

Toasted bread, chips or crackers can also add bulk to a thin soup or replace spoons for thicker stews. While every soup has its basics, there are countless ways to personalize your bowl, whether it’s extra bacon in a potato soup or adding several dashes of hot sauce to your chili.

Like fall itself, soup season is a reminder that slowing down isn’t a terrible thing. Patience offers rewards for those who stir occasionally, taste often and let time work quietly.

Insight: Soup Season 

Recent rains have brought much-needed soil moisture across Kansas, improving prospects for fall wheat stands. But the same weather that restored soil moisture has also slowed progress, leaving many farmers behind schedule.

In central Kansas, Derek Sawyer, chairman of the Kansas Wheat Commission, said planting progress in his area is only about halfway complete. Sawyer stated that KS Providence and AP Prolific are among the most commonly planted varieties this season for his area.

“Acres are fairly steady so far, but overall I think acres will be down because fall harvest has been delayed,” Sawyer said. “We’re up against the deadline for double-cropping behind corn or beans.”

According to K-State wheat production specialist Romulo Lollato, recent rainfall has provided strong moisture reserves, though planting remains well behind normal.&nbsp;

“We’ve received quite a bit of rain the last two weeks, with parts of the state close to five inches,” Lollato said. “Once fields dry, that moisture sets us up for good stand establishment.” He added that statewide planting progress is about half the long-term average for this date.

While moisture conditions are favorable, the season has also brought reports of fall armyworms. Damage has been mostly to early-grazing wheat, but growers are encouraged to watch for pressure on emerging stands. Lollato said fields can often recover if the pressure drops quickly, but replanting may be necessary in heavily affected areas.

In northwest Kansas, Chris Tanner, president of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, wrapped up drilling by mid-October. He said planted acres in his area are likely down this year after some producers delayed planting due to armyworm pressure. Tanner seeded AP Sunbird and KS Bill Snyder, noting that recent rains made conditions ideal for finishing the job.

“After a dry stretch like we’ve had, it feels great to drill into this kind of moisture,” Tanner said.

Concerns about wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) remain high as cooler weather slows volunteer control. K-State wheat pathologist Kelsey Andersen Onofre said later flushes of volunteer wheat near planting are generally lower risk.&nbsp;

“If that green bridge is gone, curl mites are likely gone too because they need living tissue,” Onofre said. K-State continues to offer free testing for volunteer wheat and grassy hosts for the wheat streak complex, helping farmers assess risk and plan management.

K-State’s Agronomy e-Update reports that planting in late October to early November remains acceptable in southeast and far south-central Kansas but is considered late in other areas and falls beyond full crop insurance coverage. Research from Garden City shows that delaying planting from October 1 to November 1 can delay heading by six days and reduce yield by about 23 percent.

To offset the effects of late planting, agronomists recommend increasing seeding rates, maintaining a planting depth of 1 to 1.5 inches, and applying starter phosphorus fertilizer with the seed. About 20 to 30 pounds per acre of phosphorus is advised to promote early growth and tillering. Grain-only wheat requires little nitrogen in the fall - roughly 20 to 30 pounds per acre is sufficient until spring topdress.

As fields begin to dry, producers across Kansas are expected to move quickly to wrap up planting. Despite delays, this fall’s moisture could help set the stage for strong stands heading into winter. Research from Garden City shows that delaying planting from October 1 to November 1 can delay heading by six days and reduce yield by about 23 percent.</p><p>To offset the effects of late planting, agronomists recommend increasing seeding rates, maintaining a planting depth of 1 to 1.5 inches, and applying starter phosphorus fertilizer with the seed. About 20 to 30 pounds per acre of phosphorus is advised to promote early growth and tillering. Grain-only wheat requires little nitrogen in the fall - roughly 20 to 30 pounds per acre is sufficient until spring topdress.</p><p>As fields begin to dry, producers across Kansas are expected to move quickly to wrap up planting. Wheat Scoop: Moisture boosts fall wheat outlook, but delays drilling

October is generally jam-packed for my family, and this year is no exception. Attending my son’s football games, finishing up our calving season, celebrating birthdays, continuing fall harvest and preparing to sow wheat have taken up the majority of my family’s attention and effort this month. 

My mother-in-law, the kids and I added to our October schedule by recently participating in a market of farms pop-up event organized by Shop Kansas Farms and Kansas Farm Bureau. Producers from across Kansas brought their products to the pop-up market to increase visibility, connect with customers and ultimately sell their goods.

My family, minus my father-in-law and husband who stayed home to keep harvesting, took our popcorn and popcorn popper to the event and had a fantastic day of handing out samples, having great conversations and sending customers home with our product. 

A number of people I visited with at the market have since connected with me through social media or email.

Many of these messages have centered around October being Farm to School Month and how many Kansas schools participate with other states within the region in an annual Crunch Off competition. 

The goal of the October Crunch Off is to see how many students, staff and community members can crunch an ag product from their state as a way to highlight locally grown items.

Since many schools have their own popcorn poppers, and popcorn makes a great crunchable snack, we’ve sent bags of our Kansas-grown popcorn to schools all across our state for these events.

While there’s still plenty of October remaining, it’s been quite rewarding to connect with schools, see pictures from their social media of their students crunching our popcorn and even discussing opportunities to incorporate our little popping crop in their school concessions or cafeterias to use well beyond Farm to School Month.

As Kansas farmers, we know the wheat, sorghum, corn and soybeans we harvest annually on our farm help feed and fuel the world — even though we don’t know exactly who uses the grain once we deliver to the elevator. Our popcorn crop, on the other hand, has allowed us a personalized window into the lives, homes and communities of those we are helping feed. It’s allowed us the opportunity to connect with consumers, to share our story and to serve as a resource. 

It’s become increasingly clear to me that more and more people want to know about their food and the people who grow it. Events like the pop-up market and school Crunch Offs are examples of ways to create connections between family farms and consumers while highlighting the great products being produced within our state.

Windows and opportunities

The National Agricultural Hall of Fame will induct three individuals this fall whose work has significantly shaped American agriculture—antique tractor preservationist Michael Hinton of Hutchinson, former U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, and pork industry innovator Wendell Murphy. The ceremony will take place Oct. 23 at the National Agricultural Center in Bonner Springs.

Chartered by Congress in 1960, the Agricultural Hall of Fame honors those who have made outstanding national or international contributions to the advancement of agriculture. Previous inductees include such figures as Sen. Pat Roberts, Eli Whitney, George Washington Carver, and John Deere.

Hinton, known nationally for his dedication to preserving vintage tractors and the stories they carry, founded Antique Tractor Preservation Day and created TalkingTractors.com in 2024, a platform celebrating the heritage of rural life and agricultural innovation.

His efforts have earned multiple Kansas Governor Proclamations—in 2025, 2024, 2012, 2011, and 2010—along with two U.S. Congressional Record Statements and four USPS Pictorial Postmarks recognizing Antique Tractor Preservation Day.

Through his preservation and storytelling work, Hinton has brought global attention to the enduring spirit of American farmers. “It’s about storytelling, stewardship, and strengthening the bond between generations,” the Hall of Fame release noted. “He works to honor those who labored in the fields, advanced American farming, and embodied the values of hard work, innovation, and community.”

Also being honored is Sonny Perdue, who served as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture from 2017 to 2021. During his tenure, he established the first Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs to open global markets for American farmers, expanded food programs during the COVID-19 pandemic, and advanced rural broadband initiatives. Perdue now serves as chancellor of the University System of Georgia, overseeing agricultural research, education, and the creation of the 250-acre UGA Grand Farm research facility.

Wendell Murphy, of Rose Hill, North Carolina, transformed modern pork production. Through Murphy Farms, founded in 1962, he pioneered contract feeding systems, confinement technology, and genetics programs that revolutionized pork production nationwide. His innovations in nutrition, biosecurity, and efficiency remain industry standards.

Each October since the 1930s, the American agriculture industry has shown appreciation for these member-owned, member-controlled businesses during National Co-Op Month.

The 2025 theme, “Cooperatives Build a Better World,” highlights how agricultural cooperatives continue to evolve to meet the needs of their farmer member-owners. Just as Kansas farmers adopt new technologies and management practices, agricultural cooperatives invest in infrastructure, leadership programs and services to help their members succeed.

“Local farmer-owners of Kansas cooperatives are the backbone of the Wheat State,” said Russell Plaschka, president and CEO of the Kansas Cooperative Council, the organization that has represented the cooperative business model in the Sunflower State since 1944. “When we talk about a circular economy, cooperatives exemplify this through the cooperative principle of concern for community. The majority of the dollars generated from wheat and other commodities typically stay local, supporting local economies and helping sustain our rural communities into the future.”

The Kansas Cooperative Council represents cooperatives across all sectors, including agriculture, finance, utilities, housing and more. The organization provides education, advocacy and public outreach to promote the cooperative business model and strengthen the network of member-owned organizations throughout Kansas.

Cooperatives play a vital role in Kansas communities, employing more than 5,000 people across 575 locations statewide and serving more than 100,000 members. Kansas is also home to three of the nation’s top 100 agricultural cooperatives, showing the state’s deep roots in collaboration and shared success.

Despite widespread support from voters, corporations, and policymakers for conservation farming, a new survey shows many farmers are abandoning practices such as cover crops and no-till after trying them for a short time.&nbsp;

The study found that a majority of producers who planted cover crops or used no-till methods — both designed to reduce erosion, improve soil health, and limit nutrient runoff — discontinued those practices within a year. 

In particular, most farmers who used cover crops one season had stopped using them by the next.

Ag Minute: Conservation farming

The National Corn Growers Association says they're doing what they can to bring production costs more in line with today’s commodity prices.&nbsp; 

This season will be the third consecutive year of losing money, and next year looks to be the same.&nbsp; Kenneth Hartman, NCGA President, says low prices contribute to one side of the equation, but we must also look at the extremely high prices growers are paying for essential inputs on the other side. 

Production costs have dropped three percent since 2022, while corn prices are half of what they were three years ago.&nbsp;

Ag Minute: Corn production costs and commodity prices

Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins and USDA Undersecretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs Luke Lindberg announced a new three-point plan to support American agricultural producers and exporters.&nbsp; 

The plan was announced during remarks at the annual meeting of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture.&nbsp; 

The USDA will kickstart the trade promotion program in fiscal year 2026.&nbsp;

Ag Minute: Support for agricultural producers and exporters 

Only a week ago, China bought enough soybeans from Argentina to fill twenty cargo ships.&nbsp; Now, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent the U.S. will offer financial support to Argentina to help prop up its failing economy.

 American soybean farmers are outraged because Argentina is a huge competitor of ours in the world soybean market.&nbsp; To make things worse, the United States is offering to financially help Argentina, and they, Argentina dropped 100% of the tariffs and taxes on soybeans to China.&nbsp;

It gets worse.&nbsp; A spokesman from the Chinese commerce ministry said if the U.S. wants to do business, it should remove tariffs and help expand trade.&nbsp; China, the world’s biggest soybean buyer, and hasn’t bought any soybeans from the U.S., but they are complaining of unreasonable tariffs.

Ag Minute: Argentina bailout 

Registration is now open for the Kansas Governor’s Water Conference.
The event will be held Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 12–13, in Manhattan, Kansas.

This year’s conference will focus on the latest water policy issues, including surface and groundwater use, water quality in aquifers and reservoirs, and education.

Ag Minute: Kansas Water Conference

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has withdrawn a proposed rule that would have reduced the discharge of&nbsp;pollutants from meat packing plants and slaughterhouses.&nbsp; 

The EPA said it was because of the importance of the nation’s food supply and to help keep food prices down.&nbsp; 

Compliance with regulations get passed on to the consumer, and this decision helps lighten the burden.&nbsp; 

The proposed rule would have cost the industry millions of dollars to comply and would have been reflected in meat prices.&nbsp;

AG Minute: EPA withdraws proposed rule on pollutants

North Dakota farmers and landowners are being forced to choose between well below-market offers for their property or go bankrupt from legal costs.&nbsp; 

One farmer was offered half the market value for gas company pipeline across his land.&nbsp; When he denied, they threatened him with eminent domain, which means they would just take it without any compensation.&nbsp; 

He fought back in court, but now has to pay his lawyer, as well as the gas company lawyers, and the state's lawyers.&nbsp; The fees are in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and there are more like his.&nbsp; 

All of this is now headed to the Supreme Court.&nbsp;

Ag Minute:  President Trump considering financial assistance for farmers

Fall field trips are in full swing for children and their teachers. While a teacher might notify parents of an upcoming field trip a week or two before the big day, the preparation work needed for a field trip to become reality sometimes happens many months prior.

While our family’s farm has hosted many groups in the past to talk about farming sorghum, wheat, corn or soybeans in central Kansas, the requests for visits have definitely increased since we began growing and marketing popcorn. 

Perhaps it’s because our Kansas-grown popcorn can be found in stores. Maybe it’s because we have a presence on social media or because it’s a catchy name. It might also be the fact that we have been open and willing to share our family’s farming story in the past.

Whatever the reason, growing popcorn has allowed us to connect with many young learners in recent years.

We recently welcomed two large groups of children out to the farm specifically to show them our popcorn operation. We walked them through our popcorn business, showing them the steps in the journey to getting our popcorn growing in a field to ultimately getting our popcorn into someone’s kitchen.

The planning for these groups began last spring shortly after the popcorn had been planted in the ground. It was difficult to determine when the best time would be to visit a popcorn field in the fall given a variety of factors like weather and harvest.

Sometimes we have harvested our popcorn as early as Labor Day weekend. Other years it’s been closer to October.

Ultimately, we decided on our date, put it on the calendar and made sure that they all knew that we might need to make adjustments.

It’s rained a lot this summer, which has delayed the start of harvest so the original date worked. School-aged children from around our county made their way out to our farm to learn all about the popcorn business.

We took them out into a field to show them the differences between popcorn and field corn. We talked about different varieties of popcorn. We went through some of the planting requirements, irrigation needs, the growing season, pollination and harvest.

The kids got to hand shell popcorn and took moisture readings right in the field just like we do to determine when the popcorn is ready to be picked. They discovered the popcorn needs to dry down just a bit more to fit within our tight moisture percentage allowances.

We took them inside to show them the steps taken once we receive an online order or a phone call from one of our bulk poppers. They watched as we bagged popcorn and got orders ready to ship that day. They even helped us test quality control standards by snacking on some freshly popped popcorn as well.

These young learners were attentive and curious and they asked fantastic questions. And they now know a local farmer they can reach out to when they have additional inquiries.

It was fun to share our family’s popcorn story with our visitors. And while they came specifically to learn about our jumbo mushroom popcorn, I’m convinced they all went home knowing a little more about not just our family’s farming story but a lot more about agriculture in general. 

When we first started growing popcorn, we never imagined it would allow us to meet so many folks. Yet here we are today, connecting with people all because of our little popping crop.

A Kansas startup is putting wheat at the center of a biotechnology breakthrough that could change how medicines are made and delivered worldwide.

Tritica Biosciences, founded by husband and wife team Dr. Chris and Brandi Miller, is using wheat germ, the tiny embryo inside the kernel, to power a process called cell-free protein synthesis. In simple terms, they have figured out how to turn wheat germ into a shelf-stable “factory” that makes proteins on demand.

The key is Tritica’s ability to separate and preserve the wheat embryo intact. Unlike traditional milling byproducts that quickly go rancid, their process keeps embryos stable at room temperature. From there, the embryos are converted into an extract that can begin producing proteins when supplied with the right DNA instructions.

One example is insulin. Instead of relying on centralized production, hospitals or clinics could one day make insulin locally by adding water and the correct DNA to wheat germ extract.

“The seed goes in the soil and that embryo has to have every resource that it's going to take to get through the soil until it can get a leaf up and start photosynthesis,” Chris Miller said. “It's packed with concentrated machinery. You couldn’t go take leaves or grass clippings and do what we do. It’s really specific to the embryo.”

“In a nutshell, we can put in DNA for human insulin and the machines will pick up that instruction set and make it immediately,” Chris Miller said.

The Millers believe the applications reach far beyond pharmaceuticals. Their process has already shown success with enzymes, human DNA and even food-related proteins.

“We don’t even know fully, to be honest. We are just getting started,” Brandi Miller said. “Our big focus right now with the ARPA-H project is pharmaceuticals, but we think it’s endless. As Chris mentioned, we’ve had success with enzymes and even human DNA. It’s just a matter of optimization.”

The work is backed by a $29 million federal grant from ARPA-H, the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health. Tritica is partnering with other biotech firms to refine the process and test its potential in real-world health care settings.

For Kansas farmers, the technology offers another way wheat could improve lives. The leftover grain from Tritica’s process can still be milled into flour, meaning nothing is wasted. The system also avoids toxic byproducts or wastewater.

“How cool would it be to think about using Kansas wheat to manufacture insulin,” Brandi Miller said. “If a farmer could grow a particular variety of wheat just for that purpose, it would be an incredible story for agriculture and health care.”

While the startup is still small, with just a handful of scientists working east of Manhattan, the Millers say the long-term potential is enormous. Beyond medicine, future uses could include animal nutrition, cosmetics and other industries that rely on proteins.

Tritica Biosciences began in a converted barn and has already outgrown multiple facilities. With support from ARPA-H and Kansas partnerships, the company is scaling up production and exploring how specific wheat varieties may perform in the process.

The Millers say their vision is simple: using Kansas-grown wheat to make life-saving products more accessible and sustainable.

Wheat Scoop: Kansas wheat germ powers big Ideas at Tritica Biosciences

McDonald’s said Monday it plans to invest $200 million over the next seven years to promote&nbsp;regenerative agriculture practices&nbsp;on cattle ranches.&nbsp;

The Chicago burger giant said the investment was its largest to date in support of regenerative agriculture in the U.S. The company has also funded regenerative projects on potato farms in Canada and Europe.&nbsp;

“As a brand that serves more than 90% of Americans every year, we recognize the responsibility we have to help safeguard our food systems for long-term vitality,” Cesar Piña, McDonald’s chief supply chain officer for North America, said in a statement.&nbsp;

Regenerative techniques&nbsp;aim to conserve water, enhance soil health and reduce the need for synthetic chemicals and fertilizers.&nbsp;Other big companies, including General Mills, Nestle, Walmart and PepsiCo, have also been investing in regenerative farming projects in recent years.&nbsp;

On cattle ranches, ranchers practicing regenerative agriculture move cattle frequently and let the land recover for weeks or months. That helps produce more grass with deeper roots, which take more carbon from the air to help improve soil.&nbsp;

McDonald’s said its investment will help accelerate regenerative grazing and water and wildlife conservation on ranches spanning 4 million acres in up to 38 states.&nbsp;

McDonald’s is working with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, which will independently award competitive grants to organizations that will assist participating ranchers. The company said some of its suppliers, including Cargill, Golden State Foods and Coca-Cola, are also providing funding to the foundation.&nbsp;

Jeff Trandahl, the executive director and CEO of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, said regenerative practices can ultimately improve the productivity of grasslands and increase ranches’ profitability. The foundation expects the first round of awards will be announced in January.&nbsp;

Avian flu continues to spread across poultry farms in the Midwest.&nbsp;&nbsp; Officials confirm the virus has now struck turkey farms in both North Dakota and South Dakota.&nbsp;&nbsp;

So far, more than 55,000 birds have been killed in efforts to contain the outbreak and prevent it from spreading further.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The disease has already been a major concern for both chicken and turkey producers nationwide, with flocks culled quickly to protect the industry and food supply.&nbsp;&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. – As calving season approaches, experts from the Kansas State University Beef Cattle Institute are encouraging producers to focus on proactive management strategies to support calf health and herd performance.

One key practice is the early castration of bull calves. K-State veterinarian Brad White explained that castration at about two months of age can reduce health risks and improve long-term productivity.

“Uncastrated bulls are 2.3 times more likely to develop bovine respiratory disease compared to steers, potentially leading to significant economic impacts,” White said. “Price discounts for uncastrated bulls could range from 3% to 15% depending on weight and age.”

Along with castration, the experts highlighted newborn calf care, emphasizing fly control and deworming. White and K-State veterinarian Bob Larson advised producers to:<br>•&nbsp; Treat adult cows for fly control.<br>•&nbsp; Use age-appropriate dosing for young calves.<br>•&nbsp; Consider deworming calves around 2 to 3 months of age.<br>•&nbsp; Tailor interventions to geographic and environmental conditions.

The experts noted that targeted, early interventions can help improve animal well-being and support profitability.

Cattle Chat: Management strategies for calves

Popping a kernel of wheat in your mouth for a quick chew to test quality is almost instinctive, whether you are a Kansas farmer or the leader of a major East African conglomerate. Exploring a shared emphasis on wheat quality, as well as exploring the U.S grain production, handling and marketing systems, was the goal of a Tanzanian trade delegation that traveled to Kansas earlier this week.

Team members included two members of the Bakhresa Group, a diversified, family-owned and operated business in East Africa that operates in agro-processing, food and beverages, packaging, logistics, media, marine transport and more. Bakhresa is the largest grain milling company in East Africa with operations in nine countries, including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Rwanda, Burundi, Zimbabwe and South Africa.</p><figure>

                    </figure><p>After starting their mission in South Dakota, the team traveled to Kansas and visited the USDA Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS), the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center, and the IGP Institute. They also met with grain suppliers, handlers and exporters. The team aimed to gather firsthand information on U.S. wheat production and to gain a deeper understanding of the U.S. grain marketing system.</p><p>East Africa relies on imports of wheat to produce a wide range of daily bread products, from traditional mandazi, a fried bread eaten for breakfast, to newly introduced products like instant noodles. Russia has historically supplied more than 50% of imports; however, companies like Bakhresa are exploring ways to diversify their suppliers.</p><p>The team went to Justin Knopf’s machine shop near Gypsum to discuss everything from tractors to the dynamics of working in a family-owned business. For Knopf, a fifth-generation farmer who works alongside his father and brother, connecting with customers not too far removed from himself in the grain supply chain gave him goosebumps.</p><p>“The relationships between U.S. farmers and these gentlemen running a family business providing flour and baked goods in East Africa are significant to me,” Knopf said. “It’s meaningful to know that they probably have very similar conversations on a day-to-day basis as my brother, dad and I have. Even though it’s a different type of business, the conversations and the values are the same.”</p><p>Of course, the Bakhresa team members eagerly reached into the bucket of U.S. hard red winter (HRW) wheat Knopf had ready, even chewing a kernel or two, and noting the wheat’s premium quality.</p><p>“They were very pleased with the wheat sample from my field and my farm,” Knopf said. “That’s very reaffirming, and it gives me more motivation and inspiration for that mindset of continuous improvement. We are making sure that we are producing this type of product that when a team like this visits our farm, they want to pop it in their mouth and sample it.”</p><p>That positive impression carried through to an immediate sale. At the end of their visit to Kansas, Bakhresa purchased 5,000 metric tons (MT) (nearly 184,000 bushels) of U.S. hard red winter (HRW) for use in their Durban, South Africa mill.</p><p>From Kansas, the team will continue on to visit export facilities in Houston before attending an international baking exposition in Nevada. The Bakhresa leaders will return home having gained valuable insights into U.S. wheat quality, production and marketing systems, which will foster new connections and future business partnerships. For farmers like Knopf, missions like this one underscore the importance of considering the needs of international customers when making decisions on his farm.</p><p>“I am grateful because I learn something every time that we host a trade team or international visitors on our farm,” Knopf said. “I like to hear about what’s on their mind, what’s important in their business and their values, because that matters to me.”</p><p>“The team members were very knowledgeable, incredibly intelligent and asked great questions.
